"Over recent years a number of techniques have been developed as part of the AMIRA1 P9 project to represent mathematically or measure directly sub-processes occurring in flotation cells. These include the determination of:•,?a machine parameter (bubble surface area flux, Sb);•,?a froth parameter (froth recovery, Rf );•,?entrainment and drainage parameters (???and d); and•,?an ore floatability parameter (Pi).These flotation parameters allow the plant engineer to develop a model of the flotation circuit that can be used as a powerful tool to diagnose the performance of that circuit. The recently developed JKSimFloat V6 flotation simulator uses these parameters to predict the flotation circuit performance that would arise from changes in operating conditions and circuit configuration.This new flotation technology was applied to the Placer Kanowna Belle Gold Mine in Western Australia. A series of plant surveys, cell characterisation measurements and laboratory batch tests were conducted to determine the flotation circuit model parameters to be used within the JKSimFloat V6 simulatorA thorough flotation circuit analysis was then performed at Kanowna Belle using JKSimFloat V6. The recommendations that were provided by this circuit analysis have resulted in large improvements in the flotation performance at Kanowna Belle. These include a 1.3% increase in flotation gold recovery and a substantial decrease in operating costs. The analysis is still ongoing, however, the benefits already obtained from applying this technology have resulted in a US$1.3 million a year improvement to the mine."

INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end. Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM) analyses of sediment samples from coastal regions of Kerala and Tamil Nadu states and the heavy mineral deposits of Chavara, South India, show large lateral differences in the titanium content in ilmenite due to varying degrees of iron leaching. As the depositional environments for the sands with varying degrees of ilmenite alteration are comparable, the cause for the different degree of alteration is due to differences in the primary source of the ilmenite or to differences in the geochemical history of the ilmenite grains during transport from source to deposit. The CCSEM analyses of the heavy mineral fractions show that source of sediments with a high content of titanium-enriched ilmenites, mainly the heavy mineral deposit around Chavara, resides in the khondalite belt of South India (granulite facies metasediments). The less titanium-enriched ilmenites are sourced from other rocks in the area such as the charnokites. Those conclusions are based on the high MgO content in the leached ilmenites, chemical composition of the accompanying garnets (low CaO and high MgO), and the concentration of aluminum-rich minerals in the sands.

In Japan, packaged explosives have traditionally been used as the most common explosive for tunneling. Recently, some blasting systems such as ANFO with a kettle loader and emulsion explosives with a pump loader have been trialed in order to improve safety and efficiency of the charging process. There are issues with these systems relative to the Japanese market. ANFO dissolves in water easily, and generates ammonia gas when it contacts with concrete. Emulsion explosives need costly pump ing unit s, and there is a need to control residuals in the pump unit. Additionally, there are obstacles by Japanese law to site mixing of emulsion explosives.

The Wyoming bentonite industry continued its run of stable, if not strong, growth in its complex markets. Growth at the macroscale was fueled by a strong domestic economy, the weakening of the U.S. dollar in the global market and strong worldwide global demand. Challenges to the benchmark of the industry were rapid and saw ongoing increases in raw material costs(pallets, bags and additives), higher energy costs and higher overall transportation costs for all modes of movement. Exports continued to be assisted by dollar depreciation (5 percent to 10 percent) from January 2004to January 2005. This depreciation followed the significant weakening of 2003. And it was most favorable during the pullback in fuel and shipping rates in the second half of the year.

Both here and in Australia, the unique commercial and tax features of joint venture are finding favour in forestry, fishing, technology and infrastructure projects. For New Zealand mining companies, joint ventures provide a means of access to foreign know how and investment funds, while retaining their corporate independence and their hard-earned tax losses.   This paper discusses some of the practical income tax and GST considerations where a joint venture structure is contemplated. The first part of the paper considers income tax, and in particular how joint ventures enable companies to access and carry forward tax losses. It explains why a joint venture may be advantageous relative to a jointly owned company.   The second part of the paper concerns GST and the focus is on two aspects: 1.   Joint ventures may be registered for GST. In some instances they have no choice and are required to do so. Where a joint venture is registered in respect of a taxable activity, the members are not permitted to register in respect of the same activity. This may be problem where the member has incurred its own expenses and the member wishes to register in its own right to claim back the GST on those expenses. This paper explores the issue and possible solutions. 2.   It is not uncommon to see joint ventures claiming GST on the costs of production, and the production being sold (and GST is being charged) by the members. In this paper we consider whether these arrangements have a tax risk, and what can be done to make them technically sound.

After the closure of collieries, they naturally start to fill up with water. As a result, hydraulic gradients develop between them and different hydraulic pressures are exerted onto peripheral areas or compartments within mines. This results in water flow between mines, or onto the surface. This flow is referred to as intermine flow. The collieries in the Witbank Coalfield have geometries such that there are several areas where this intermine flow is possible. Since the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has declared intermine flow as one of its greatest concerns for granting closure to South African mines, much research into this phenomenon is required. The challenges in determining intermine flow are numerous, and attention has focused on identification of areas where these flows can take place. The quantification of these flows is problematic due to the uncertainties in exact geometric configurations and the variation in site-specific hydraulic properties of thecoal and overlying lithilogical layers. During this study, use has been made of numerical flow modelling and several analytic solutions to test the applicability of the flow models as well as to predict groundwater flow directions, filling times of voids and flow volumes. The numerical modelling methodology entailed a downscaling approach starting with a broad regional model covering the entire area, followed by modelling the interactions between interconnected mines, and finally looking in detail at the major areas of interaction.

In January 2001, French and Italian governments signed an agreement for the construction of a new Lyon-Turin railway line. This project includes a tunnel of 53.1 km length and a maximum of 2500 m overburden to be designed for a reference speed of220 km/h. The tunnel crosses major part of the West Alpine geological formations, which are very complex and contrasted in terms of the nature of rocks and the mechanical and hydrogeological conditions. In addition to the twin single-track tubes, numerous intermediary shafts, security station and intervention sites and cross passages should be built to respond to the security, operational and construction requirements. This paper describes the results of the preliminary engineering design and multiple challenges of this very long and deep railway tunnel.

The general goal of passive acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment is to reduce levels of acidity and metals to acceptable levels. Most treatment systems use either an oxidising or a reducing strategy. In oxidising systems, alkalinity is added along with dissolved oxygen; in reducing systems, dissolved oxygen is removed (if present) and then alkalinity is added. It is recommended that small-scale field trials be conducted as part of the methodology of selecting the best remediation strategy at AMD sites. Following successful field trials at the Sullivan Mine AMD, the Pike River Coal Company (PRCC) has shown foresight by using the same system to treat AMD generated as a result of taking a bulk sample of coal at the Pike River coal field. The system reduced acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 99 per cent, aluminium by 96 per cent, nickel by 95 per cent, manganese by 51 per cent and zinc by 99 per cent. The success of this field trial suggests that a system using a reducing strategy may be appropriate for the Pike River Adit AMD site.

INTRODUCTION The Brightwater conveyance system project in King County, Washington consists of constructing about 21 km (13 mile) of effluent and combined influent and effluent tunnels. The influent tunnels will collect sanitary sewerage from the service area and convey it to the new wastewater treatment plant (WTP) site at Route 9 in Woodinville, Snohomish County, Washington. The effluent tunnels will convey treated effluent from the WTP to an outfall at Puget Sound. The tunnels will be constructed primarily under residential areas, busy suburban roads and state highways. This 21 Km (13-mile) soft ground tunneling project faced many design challenges because of the geologic and hydrostatic conditions, long tunnel reaches, and large overburden depths. Boring depths typically varied from 45.7 M (150 ft) to 114 M(375 ft) with a maximum depth of 185.6 M (566 ft) deep. Conventional empirical methods for non-mountain terrain based on a 1:1 ratio of drilled footage per foot of tunnel bore (National Research Council, 1984) for evenly spaced borings provided a good start for the Phase 1 explorations. However a continuation of this approach with closer spacing was deemed inadequate by the geotechnical team for efficiently allocating geotechnical exploration resources for the final design. This paper presents a rational approach that was used to evaluate the value of a particular geotechnical exploration boring, pump test or other in-situ test. The method of analysis, which was initially developed for rock tunnels (Einstein et al., 1978), was modified for the Brightwater project. The method considers the potential construction cost risks resulting from variable geologic conditions, the cost and reliability of the geotechnical exploration and the earned value (cost risk reduction) of performing the geotechnical exploration. The attapulgite industry saw a year of solid growth after a weaker 2003. Demand was up between 5 percent and 6 percent driven by almost all of the key markets. Construction continued to show record new housing demand, assisted by continued low interest rates. That drove strong growth in construction related markets like coatings, tape joint compounds and other construction materials applications. The agricultural markets rebounded modestly to increase sales for suspension fertilizers, animal feeds and pesticide carriers. Oil drilling also showed strong growth due to high oil and gas prices. Sales to molecular sieve applications grew due to petrochemical and construction demand. The export markets were assisted by further depreciation of the dollar. The only weak area was in nonagricultural granular sorbents, where other sorbent materials continued to dominate.

A five steps remediation program was commissioned in 1998 for the acid generating Lorraine mine site, located in the Témiscamingue region, Quebec, Canada. It included, as the main expenditure, a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) used to limit oxygen migration. After construction of the cover, instruments were installed on site to monitor the CCBE performance. Modified oxygen consumption tests were also done to measure the oxygen flux through the cover. Results from water content and suction data, measured from 1999 to 2003, show that the capillary barriers effects are effective and that the water retention layer stays near saturation throughout the years. Oxygen fluxes estimated from monthly water content measures are generally below 10 g/m2/year. Results from modified oxygen consumption tests made on the site give almost similar oxygen fluxes. A two dimension numerical model of the Lorraine mine site was also constructed to verify that mathematical models could predict realistically the in situ conditions on such a large scale site. Numerical results obtained for three years show a good concordance between measured and calculated values. The results obtained form these different evaluation methods for the performance of a CCBE concur and confirm the efficiency of this cover in limiting acid mine generation.

Airblast overpressure levels can commonly be increased by up to 20 decibels (dBL) by the effects of meteorology, due to inversions and wind shear. Existing atmospheric refraction models can provide a good evaluation of the effects of meteorology, but have been limited in the accuracy of their outputs by the accuracy of the meteorological data that is available for input. This paper uses case histories from open-pit coal mine blasting in the Hunter Valley area of Australia to provide examples of increases in airblast due to inversions, wind shear, and a combination of both. It gives details of our experience of the accuracy with which predictions and assessments can be made using meteorological data of various levels of accuracy, and on the design buffer that is required to prevent the exceedence of airblast limits. The accuracy of meteorological prediction and assessment will shortly be improved by the use of sounding equipment that gives continuous measurements of temperature and wind velocity at significant levels above the ground. The paper also gives details of an industry funded research project that aims to permit the effective use of this data at distances many kilometres (km) (miles) from the location of the sounding equipment, and to develop a short term predictive model that will permit the amount of meteorological reinforcement that will occur at firing time to be determined before a decision is made to tie up a shot.

 Broken Hills is an adularia-sericite epithermal Au-Ag deposit, hosted in flow-banded rhyolites and overlying rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield. The 7.1 Ma deposit was the largest producer of gold in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield, and was one of very few economic deposits hosted in Pliocene rhyolites. This paper presents the results of a recent study in the upper levels of the deposit. Maps and cross-sections constrain structural and lithological relationships, and the lateral and vertical extent of a breccia pipe û the major feature of the upper levels.   Previous studies in the upper levels of Broken Hills have shown that gold and silver values are concentrated around and within a large breccia pipe, mined by a series of æcaveÆ stopes and in veins. Contour diagrams of Au-Ag data from channel samples indicate that the breccia pipe was a major fluid channel-way for mineralising solutions.   The breccia pipe deposits are part of the dynamic geothermal system that formed the Broken Hills ore bodies; they developed as a result of hydrothermal brecciation in areas of structural weakness within a rhyolite pyroclastic unit that overlies a massive rhyolite lava-flow unit. The main breccia pipe begins near the rhyolite/pyroclastic contact, having the shape of an inverted, inclined cone, and consists of silicified breccia, stringers of quartz, and irregular patches of clay-altered country rock. Smaller zones or pockets of hydrothermal eruption breccia are silicified and contain low grade gold in the matrix and in the adjacent silicified wall rocks.   Quartz has been classified according to its physical characteristics as seen in situ and hand specimens indicate that vein definition decreases upwards, perhaps as a result of changing lithological conditions and/or increasing proximity to the paleosurface. Hydrothermal quartz is widespread as veins and as a replacement mineral, or lining fractures and cavities and overgrowing rock fragments. Breccias contain vein quartz, but some quartz veins cross-cut breccias, indicating that vein and breccia formation was relatively synchronous and overlapped in time.   Disseminated gold-silver mineralisation is associated with vein quartz and silicic alteration of the wall rock within the breccia pipe. The auriferous zones are highly irregular and erratic, and sampling results show a wide range of gold-silver ratios, suggesting that highly volatile physiochemical conditions prevailed during mineralisation.

In medium- to high-grade metamorphic terrains such as found in New York City(NYC), rock mass texture and mineralogy are important factors in predicting TBM penetration destiny. Integration of data from over two decades of traditional field and tunnel mapping suggest that hard-rock TBM penetration in the NYC area depends upon textural, mineralogic, and structural control. The bedrock of NYC consists of many different lithologic units of varying age, composition, texture, and metamorphic grade including many varieties of intrusive rock. In addition, brittle faults of numerous orientations cut the polydeformed crystalline bedrock, producing zones of highly fractured and disturbed ground and high water inflows. Pre-bid compilation of published bedrock data, drill core analysis by geologists to establish lithologic and mineralogic trends, integrated surface geologic mapping along a proposed alignment, and targeted petrographic and geotechnical investigations to characterize the rock mass conditions together constitute an important prelude to successful subsurface bidding and tunneling. A carefully planned program of as-built geological mapping, structural analysis, fracture class mapping, and monitoring of machine performance data provide important information for adjusting to changed conditions. In complex terrains, a clear understanding of the structural geology of any proposed tunnel line is the simplest and most cost-effective method to mitigate losses encountered during TBM tunneling.

With construction underway on the 22.5 km (14 mile) Initial Segment of the Link Light Rail transit system in Seattle (including the one-mile EPB-driven running tunnels and mined station at Beacon Hill), the Sound Transit Board on May 20, 2004 voted on selection of a preferred route for an approximately eight-mile extension northwards from the central business district to Northgate, and authorized immediate start of advanced conceptual/preliminary engineering and geotechnical exploration programs scheduled to be completed in Spring 2005. The extension includes approximately914 m (30,000) route-feet of bored running tunnels, a mined station with platform level approximately 60 m (200 ft) below grade, three (possibly four) cut-and-cover stations and a cut-and-cover cross-over structure, as well as an aerial terminal station at Northgate and other line-section below-grade and aerial structures. All tunneling will be in glacial soils.

Ammonia, the principal source of fixed nitrogen, was produced by 16 companies at 31 plants in the United States during 2003. Fifty-five percent of U.S. ammonia production capacity was centered in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas because of their large reserves of natural gas, the dominant domestic feedstock. Production In 2004, U.S. producers operated at about 59 percent of their rated capacity. The United States remained the world’s second largest ammonia producer and consumer following China. Urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphates, nitric acid and ammonium sulfate were the major derivatives of ammonia in the United States, in descending order of importance.

In the processing industries, it is well known that particle shape is an important factor which determines the behavior of particulate systems. For example, system properties of technological significance including rheology, suspension stability, agglomeration, packing, permeability…etc, are affected by particle shape. In this regard, characterization and analysis of particle shape is essential for more detailed understanding and improved development of particulate processes. In general, it is clear that the behavior of these systems depends on the statistical characteristics of particle shape. Remarkably few techniques exist to predict the mechanical and hydrodynamic behavior of an irregularly shaped particle or a population of irregularly shaped particles for that matter. The lack of models and correlations can be attributed to the wide variety and complexity of particle shapes, the difficulty of defining shape descriptors suitable for modeling, the limitations of measuring shape, and the lack of classifying techniques to characterize particle shape. In this paper, we present information on how 3D particle shape can be measured, characterized, and analyzed using cone-beam X-ray microtomography (XMT).
