"INTRODUCTIONOn November 10, 1982 Nor and a Inc signed an agreement with Golden Sceptre Resource Ltd. and Goliath Gold Mines Ltd. to construct a mine and milling facility.The Golden Giant mine is located in the Marathon area of north - western Ontario, immediately north of Highway 17 and about- 3.5 km west of Highway 614.With the exception of selected unit processes, the mill was designed for a nominal throughput of 2500 tonnes per day with early operating data to be used to identify sections requiring possible expansion to achieve an ultimate throughput of 3000 tonnes per day.Commissioning of the highly instrumented milling complex which includes crushing, grinding, cyanidation, and carbon in pulp processes commenced in February 1985. After water testing various sub-circuits from grinding through tailings, waste ore was introduced to ensure proper mechanical and electrical operation of process equipment.The first ore was milled as a mixture with waste on March 4, 1985. The first gold bullion was poured April 6, 1985.Initially, ore was only available from mine development at a rate of 700 t/d, which was milled at a minimum rate of 1200 t/d. While regular weekly shut downs of two to three days was useful for mechanical maintenance, changes, and modifications, process tuning was more difficult due to the non-steady operation. As increased quantities of ore became available, regular weekly shutdowns tapered off and process operation improved accordingly. For testing purposes and as ore was available, mill throughput was increased regularly to 2300 t/d and for very short periods of time to nearly 3000 t/d.No major design or operating problem has been encountered to date. The following is a brief description of the milling process and various operating highlights. Process flowsheets are shown in Figures 1 through 6."

The Wainui Mill was conceived as a 60 - 90 t/d central mill to process gold ores of the Thames area of New Zealand from small mines in the district. The ores of the region exhibit various degrees of refractory response to conventional cyanidation leach due to the fineness of the gold, and association with pyrite. The alternative circuits involving cyanidation, flotation, and possible small-scale smelting are examined. The environmental impacts have been audited by the Commission for the Environment and were found to be acceptable.

INTRODUCTION The principal means for transporting men, supplies, and mined material in an underground or surface mine are rail systems, conveyor belt systems, or a combination of the two. Typically, large underground mines use rail haulage from the mining sections to the hoist, with conveyor belts being used within the sections. Small mines use conveyor belts in the mains and sub- mains as well as in the panels. The size and layout of surface mines also contribute to variations in the way these haulage systems are applied. The following sections address the typical problems confronting mining engineers in designing these haul- age systems. For rail, these include rail selection and turnout design, locomotive tractive-effort calculation, and motor sizing. Belt haulage calculations include belt width and speed specifications, tension and take- up requirements, idler spacings, and motor sizing. TRACK LAYOUTS Introduction The adequacy of mine track layouts is dependent upon such factors as rail weight (Table l), suitable ties, a well-drained roadbed, and properly designed curves, grades, and track alignment. As long as the installation conforms to the manufacturer's recommendations, good service can be expected from the rail system. Typically, mining-engineering calculations for rack layouts have dealt almost exclusively with the design of turnouts. As such, the following section provides the necessary information for computing the theoretically correct dimensions of turnouts. Turnout Design Fig. 1 shows a typical turnout with an identification of the component parts. Fig. 2 identifies the variables that are used to determine the turnout dimensions. In April 1984 a subsidence depression formed directly beneath a two-story frame residence, near Linton, IN, causing 2 ft of separation between the floor and walls, and damaging both the foundation and interior of the building. The Office of Surface Mining undertook the rehabilitation of the area under its emergency response program. This paper describes the investigation performed to determine the cause, severity, and extent of the problem. Abandoned mine workings were found approximately 55 to 60 ft below the house. Based on the findings, remedial measures were prescribed. An abatement program consisting of grouting the mine voids was recommended, and specifications prepared. These were implemented, and the area has been successfully stabilized.

In 1985 at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined a 27,680-acre portion of the 30,420-acre King Hill Creek Wilderness Study Area (10-19-2) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area, in southwestern Idaho, is underlain by Tertiary tuffs and basalt. There are no known mining claims or prospects in the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. The Volcano mining district is immediately north, but mines there are in granitic rock which does not crop out in the study area. Oil and gas leases were offered for land in the southern part of the area, but no applications were filed, and the lease offering was withdrawn (1985). INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the King Hill Creek study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

Deep mining within the Sewell Coal member of the New River Formation in southern West Virginia has exposed several small-scale thrust faults and related features. The faults were en- countered in Westmoreland Coal Company's Eccles No. 6 Mine located near Beckley, West Virginia (Figure 1). The purpose of this paper is to: 1) describe the nature of these faults and the effect they have on mining, 2) discuss the roof support methods used in the fault zones, 3) establish a mechanism for the origin of the faults. and 4) demonstrate how the mechanism was used to forecast fault trends across the mine property.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory experiments to evaluate the triboelectric effect of particulate-laden gas streams on polyethylene pipe at various velocity, humidity, dust-size, and dust-load conditions. Charges in excess of 10 kV were produced on the outside and inside surfaces of laboratory pipe samples, when exposed to 40 pct relative humidity (RH) gas stream containing coal dust. However, no charges were produced in laboratory tests that duplicated the over 75 pct RH and dust-free gas streams found in working underground pipelines. Bare cop- per wire, which is wound around the polyethylene pipe in a 1-ft (31-cm) spacing and grounded, eliminated the charge on the outside surface of the pipe, but not on the inside of the pipe surface,

Agglomeration techniques have been successfully applied to commerical heap leach cyanidation operations for the recovery of precious metals from low-grade ores, mine wastes, and tailings. The major parameters important for successful agglomeration pretreatment of these feed materials are discussed. Several commercial agglomeration-heap leaching operations are described. Two of the operations converted from conventional heap leaching to agglomeration-heap leaching after coventional heap leaching proved unsuccessful. Heap performance before and after agglomeration is discussed. A fairly recent operation that began production using agglomeration-heap leaching technology is also described. Two operations that processed milled tailings by agglomeration are discussed. The tailings feeds could not have been economically processed by means other than agglomeration-heap leaching.

"INTRODUCTIONThis is not a technical paper in the normal sense. It is an informal document which is intended to share the results of some recent cyclone research with our colleagues both in operations and in research.PILOT PLANT FACILITIESFigure 1 is a schematic of the closed circuit hydrocyclone pilot plant testing facility at the University of Alberta. In this figure the system is configured for some experimental work on wide angle cyclones which was recently completed. The rig is designed to study cyclones in the approximate range of 10 cm to 20 cm diameter. Notable features include the variable speed feed pump, the magnetic flowmeter and pressure sensors on the cyclone feed line and the travelling launder which permits simultaneous sampling of both product streams.ORGANIZATIONFor organizational convenience the subject matter has been divided into three parts:(1) Peculiar Partition Curves(2) Wide Angle Cyclones(3) Rope DischargePECULIAR PARTITION CURVESMuch of the initial empirical mathematical modelling work on cyclone classifiers dealt with homogeneous ores. A homogeneous ore is one in which all particles have substantially the same apparent density, or where one phase is very clearly predominant. In contrast, a heterogeneous ore is one in which there are at least two different density classes, each making a significant contribution to the ore composition. (Particle shape similarity is always assumed.)One of the problems which can arise when analysing the overall solids partition (selectivity, Tromp, etc ... ) curve for a heterogeneous ore is the peculiar shape which may be observed, when compared to partition curves for homogeneous ores. This is not an unusual occurrence and it has been documented by Lynch and Rao, Finch and Laplante and Larsen and Spring. The purpose of this section is to identify those operating conditions which may give rise to peculiar partition curves."

The properties, origin and industrial uses of kaolin clay are briefly reviewed. The general waterwashed beneficiation process is described. Yost aspects of filtration and solids-liquid separation as practiced in the kaolin industry are mentioned along with devices that are currently in the developmental stage. The paper focuses heavily on the well known art of rotary vacuum filtration, including general construction and operating details. Devices under investigation that might be used to mechanically or electrically dewater clay slurries to higher cake solids levels than can be achieved with rotary vacuum filters are described briefly.

The Polish underground mining has its long lasting tradition. High production of coal, that has recently been approaching 200 milion tons per year, put this small country among the bigest world producers of coal. To achieve such a high production, which mainly originate from very unfavourable mining and geological conditions, Polish scientists and engineers have to introduce new and original solutions to the mining practice. Many of the solutions on mining methods, ventilation, stability, subsidence etc., have had the world wide reputation, however, insufficient translations from Polish cause , that many of the recent Polish mining achievements are not known to foreign specialists.

Agglomeration for the heap leaching of gold and silver ores can be defined as the process of attaching fine ore particles (less than 100 mesh) to coarser particles so the fines are immobilized and uniformly distributed throughout the heap, thus making the heap more porous and uniformly permeable to the flow of a leaching solution. Agglomeration techniques and equipment to be described include drum and disc agglomerators, stockpile and belt agglomeration, and the use of vibrating deck and reverse running conveyors.

"Water quality plays an important role in oxide flotation. The effects on selective flotation of fine (1-16 um) pyrochlore of two types of water used at the Niobec concentrator, potable and plant recycle, were assessed. Several pyrochlore collectors and silicate depressants were tested. Water effects were different for each mineral-reagents) combination. In general plant recycle water decreased selectivity and increased reagent consumption. Interpretation of results is given in terms of electrokinetic effects, hydrolysis of cations, and mineral-collector interactions. Two techniques of treatment for plant recycle water, cation precipitation and zeolite adsorption were assessed. The former was found to be more effective under the tested conditions but recycle water continued to give poorer selectivity than the potable.INTRODUCTIONWater quality plays an important role in selective flotation. Specific effects have been reported by many workers (1-6) and in general the better the water quality the more selective is flotation. Water composition depends on origin and the minerals being processed. For example pulp containing salt-type minerals (calcite, apatite, dolomite) will contain more Ca and Mg cations than that from a sulphide deposit. Another source of water contamination is the flotation reagents added to the pulp, particularly if water recycling is practiced."

Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. Water quality standards for some of the substances likely to be discharged to natural waters by the mining industry are discussed. After briefly examining how uses of water can be affected by discharges, standards for suspended solids and turbidity, pH, and toxic materials are considered. Heavy metals are examined in some detail because of recent public concern regarding their discharge. Caution is given in connection with their analysis at the very low concentrations required for management of natural waters. Finally, the issues of what constitutes a water right concentration compliance breach, and the appropriateness of biological monitoring as a condition on a water right are raised.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from high extraction mining in southern Illinois. The objectives of the monitoring program are to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a foundation during a subsidence event and to determine the capability of the tiltmeter to detect and monitor subsidence movements. Tiltmeter data were obtained on two foundations constructed near Sesser, IL. One of the 30-by 40- ft foundations was constructed with a typical poured concrete footing, the other with a rein- forced-concrete footing poured on top of pol yethylene sheeting placed over a compacted layer of sand. Soil-filled bins were placed on the perimeters of both foundations to simulate superstructure loads. Monitoring pins and tiltplates were installed on the corners and midpoints of the footing. Additional survey points were established on the five-acre site to track the mining advance. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tilt- meter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations is demonstrated.

Attapulgite is a magnesium aluminosilicate clay mineral which exhibits unique, processing-enhanceable physical and chemical properties that are related to its current commercial uses. Properties of commercial interest are gelling, absorption, adsorption, binding, acid neutralization and many others. Major industrial applications are: (1) absorption by heat treated grades utilized in industrial oil and grease absorbents and in agricultural pesticide carriers; (2) gelling of aqueous liquid products by colloidal grades for stabilization and viscosity control in salt water drilling fluids, suspension fertilizers, liquid animal feed supplements, paints and tape joint compounds; (3) adsorption by heat treated varieties for the removal of catalysts, color bodies and other polar compounds from hydrocarbon streams; (4) gelling of organic liquids by colloidal attapulgite/surfactant blends in oil-type paints, fibrated and nonfibrated asphaltic coatings and mastic compositions, and (5) the binding of feeds and molecular sieve sorpents with colloidal type attapulgite products. These applications and other less common uses and potential uses will be discussed along with, the necessary selective mining and plant processing features related to each property and application.

In 1984, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Pahute Peak Wilderness Study Area (WSA) (NV-020-621), which covers 57,529 acres in Humboldt County, NV. About 90 percent of the WSA is underlain by Tertiary volcanic and shallow intrusive rocks. Of the remainder, metasedimentary rocks of unknown age are in contact with Cretaceous intrusive rocks in the northwest corner of the WSA. The entire WSA is within an upthrown fault block of the Basin and Range physiographic province. Portions of the WSA, especially south of Pahute Peak (Big Mountain), may be part of an eroded caldera structure. No mines or evidence of major exploration were identified within the WSA. Workings in Copper Canyon, claim blocks along the northwest boundary, and zones of anomalous character as defined by the Bureau of Land Management were examined. No mineral resources were identified, but sample results indicate three significantly mineralized sites, one with indications for zinc skarns in Copppr Canyon, another favorable for precious metals 2 miles south of Copper Canyon, and another area near the northwest boundary with geologic conditions characteristic of molybdenum deposits. Further investigation of these sites is warranted. Petrified wood is present in small amounts near the west central range front.

INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth.
