This manual was prepared to provide essential information to be used when critical decisions pertaining to mine fire recovery or other disaster situations become necessary. It is a state of the art report based upon technology and instruments developed, under a Bureau of Mines Research Contract. A detailed description of the development work and results of full-scale field testing is contained in the Technical Report, Vol. II, of USBM Contract Report H0122045, "Extinguishing Coal Mine Fires by Remote Scaling." Further research and development work has been programmed; consequently, a more complete manual providing detailed instructions and describing available instruments and equipment will be published. Those instruments and special equipment described in this manual must be considered prototype; methodology and applied technology will require special expertise. Consequently, any prospective application of this remote sealing technique will require assistance by the United States Bureau of Mines Research organization and experts from the contractor who developed the basic technology and instruments.

The Location Group conversed in the Petroleum Room of the Green Center with the purpose of addressing the following list of topics in light of the Bureau of Mines' requirements for detecting and locating trapped miners by electromagnetic methods. These topics include: Noise, Sources, Antennas (transmit and receive), the Propagation Medium, Signal Processing, Optimum Frequency, Receivers, Pulse vs. CW Techniques, Passive Location Techniques, and Obstacles. Practical constraints such as equipment size, weight and power requirements, cost and intrinsic safety were kept in mind during these discussions. It was emphasized that in-mine equipment must be inexpensive, rugged, simple and lightweight. Otherwise, the mine operators probably would not buy it nor would the miners be able to effectively use it. Present techniques for experimentally detecting and locating trapped miners were discussed, along with techniques to improve their location accuracy. Analytical, numerical, and scale modelling methods were considered as a means of giving further insight into measurement, anomalies caused by terrain variations, conductivity contrasts, and obstacles. After discussion of these topics, conclusions were drawn and existing problem areas were identified. These problem areas were addressed in developing guidelines for future efforts. Following the discussion period, the Chairman gave a summary of the Location Group report and comments were solicited from the entire group. 2.0 GROUP DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Noise W. Bensema asked the group whether the noise data provided by NBS was adequate. It was determined that for location systems analysis, the most important form of noise data was the frequency spectra of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields on the surface, and the answer to his question was affirmative. Drs. Wait and Frischknecht pointed out the difficulty in accurately measuring the true vertical magnetic field since these measurements are heavily influenced by the loop setting and the local geology. The Hallmark Distribution Center is one of the most sophisticated material handling and order filling facilities in the world. The 53 million cubic foot facility houses an ultra-modern, computer- monitored distribution complex that handles as many as 1/4 million orders per day. The Distribution Center replaces 16 leased buildings scattered through- out metropolitan Kansas City and, in addition, re-leased 4 floors in mid-town Kansas City needed for creative and administrative expansion. This new facility is the nerve center for distribution of Hallmark products in United States and Latin America. The size and gross numbers of all parts of the system is a significant accomplishment, but the purpose of this paper is to explain the technical advancements in the state-of-the-art of material handling and controls. The system iteself is made up of seven sub-systems including receiving, warehousing, picking rack stocking, towline, order filling, order sorting, and shipping. Significant techniques were used in each of these areas as well as technical advancements in the state-of-the- art. The most significant points are in 4 of the areas and are discussed in this paper.

Principal factors influencing equipment selection can be grouped into five basic categories. Tonnage Requirements, Ore and Waste Loading, transporting, and ground preparation equipment are largely determined by tonnage requirements. Generally, the greater the tonnage requirements, the larger the equipment size selected. Large size equipment is appropriate for a production of about six million tons (total) per month, medium size for three mil- lion tons, and small size for one million tons or less.

A study of copper cementation on iron was initiated to determine the effect that deposited copper has upon subsequent cementation. A microscopic investigation of cementation on an iron surface showed that cupric ion precipitates predominately on a growing copper deposit attached to the iron surface. A kinetic study of the cementation process in a revolving drum showed that the cementation rate is enhanced by the copper deposit attached to the iron surface and by the discrete copper particles of a cement copper slurry. The kinetic study also indicated that the character of the deposit is affected by the major anion in the solution. The cementation process is visualized to occur as a series of electrochemical cells in which cupric ion precipitates on copper dendrites attached to the iron surface.

It scarcely 1s possible to read a new issue of any of the principal mining trade journals without noting some mention of a major new overseas mining venture with which one or more domestic companies are involved. These projects seem to follow a fairly consistant pattern; most are large open pit mines, with relatively low grade ore bodies but huge reserves; the total price tag will be in nine significant figures and around half or more of the total cost will be for infrastructure. West1 noted that nearly $7 billion is being invested annually for new mining projects and the expansion of existing mining ventures, in the free world. He anticipates that by the year 1975 such investments would reach the $10-11 billion annual figure, and that in the five year period 1972-76 total capital requirements can be expected to aggregate around $45 billion. The proportion of this total investment which will be financed in some manner is difficult to estimate because of the variety of available financing arrangements. West estimated that around 75% of the total capital would come from internally generated funds, with the balance from external sources. Conceivably a substantially higher percentage could be attributable to external financing, especially it the trend of recent mineral development in Canada and Australia is any criterion, and of course, including local sales of equity as a part of the package.

In 1970, the Government of Saskatchewan instituted a program aimed at resolving the dilemma of excess productive capacity over the market demand which existed for potash produced in Saskatchewan. The two primary elements of the program were prorationing of potash production to market demand and a minimum selling price. The paper reviews the factors, both local and international in nature that led to the introduction of the program. The licensing mechanics and the operation of the program, along with the changes that have been introduced in two and one-half years of operation, are discussed. Attention is given to the results of the controls as they affect the industry and the province. Also discussed is the outlook for Saskatchewan potash in world markets.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. Using bench-and pilot-scale coking facilities, the Bureau of Mines produced experimental coke from blends of char with Sunnyside coal (high-volatile A bituminous) from Carbon County, Utah. At bench scale, additions of char made from lignite improved resultant cokes when concentrations of up to 60 pct were used in the blends. At pilot scale (500-pound movable-wall oven), four chars made by entrained-bed carbonization techniques from the parent Sunnyside coal and from a North Dakota lignite were used in two-component blends with the Sunnsyide coal. Chars from Sunnyside coal had volatile matter contents of 5.8, 9.8, and 16.0 pct, moisture-free basis; the char from the lignite had 16.6 pct. In twenty-five 500-pound tests, improvement in coke quality was observed from all blends at char concentrations to 17.5 pct. The best coke, produced from a concentration of 12.5 to 15 pct of S.8-pct volatile char, exhibited physical properties approaching those of an industrial coke produced from Sunnyside coal blended with three higher rank blending coals. Studies were also made of the effects on coke quality of char source, of particle size, of comparative use of char and of a blending coal, and of prolonged coal storage.

Secondary use of mined-out space in underground limestone quarries is emerging in the Kansas City area where abandoned quarry sites are being renovated into warehouses, factories, and offices. Mining techniques, ceiling heights, and pillar distribution are being altered as planning for the secondary use of mined-out space is combined with the quarrying process. Even the historic urban- quarry land use conflict invites a reappraisal in that this development provides a potential resolution of the problem. Mutual subsidization by dual rock and space interest is changing the economics of rock production. A city is much more than a surficial adjunct superimposed upon the topography of an area. Its development and growth are deeply rooted in the resources, benefits and problems of its underlying geology. The environmental geologist must address himself to more than the quality of a particular resource. He must comprehensively relate resource extraction and processing with the urban emphasis of optimal use which favors long term usage of land over one time economic ventures. Limestone quarrying, closely allied with the growth of many cities, has commonly left a series of scarred landscapes in the path of the burgeoning metropolis. These abandoned quarry sites are barriers to orderly city growth and fail to serve the people as useful and taxable land. Where quarries are functional, supplying the city with needed growth minerals, problems of blasting damage, noise, and dust exist. Technology faces the challenge of making mineral production and processing good neighbors to the urban market they serve. Continued growth of cities may require more efficient use of space below as well as above the surface optimizing land usage so that long term economic benefits may be reflected in improved mining methods.

The listed title of my talk to-day is "MODERN ON STRAND SINTER COOLING". Perhaps it should he ve been "COMPLETION OF SINTERING ON THE STRAND" as the two are synonymous. By the very nature of the DWIGHT-LLOYD SINTERING PROCESS partial cooling on the strand is always present, but not completion of sintering and cooling on the strand. I have mentioned the Dwight-Lloyd process just to be certain the type of sintering under discussion is fully identified because some of the basic mechanisms of sintering occur in various pyro-processing of fines lying in close quiescent contact, such as powdered metals practices, some types of pellet induration, firing of briquets, or other compacts, where the entire bed is brought to, and held at, the high reaction temperatures of sintering. Figure 1, The continuous sintering process as originally conceived consisted of intimately mixing carefully proportioned burdens, placing them in a comparatively thin, draft permeable layer, on a moving grate and igniting the surface while drawing sir through the bedded burden. The moving grate was advanced slowly as the line of burning fuel travelled from the surface to the bottom of the bed and no more fire zone could be seen.

The enterprises based upon the industrial minerals are diversified in geologic habit, mining systems, processing techniques and marketing methods. Nevertheless, in 1972 these enterprises faced many of the same frustrations and hopes and knotty problems and crucial decisions. Volume and profits were generally improved but were uneven in extent and effect. The U.S. cement industry, for example, was unable to meet demand in major markets. It was constricted by a frozen low-level price structure, faced expensive pollution control measures and watched heavy imports penetrating its markets from several European nations, Mexico and Canada.

The choice of equipment to be applied to a given installation by the Application Engineer begins with the data as presented to him by the user. This point in the relationship establishes a communication link, which will decide whether or not the correct piece of Overhead Equipment is applied at the most economic advantage to the user. The role played by the user cannot be minimized. No one knows better than he, just what work he expects to accomplish with this piece of machinery. However, all too often, he oversimplifies the requirements, and along with minimal crane and building parameters, merely refers to one of the following crane classifications as defined by The Crane Manufacturing Association of America, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. This approach places the ultimate user in an unfair position, since he has then assumed the status of the machinery designer and must, therefore, assume the responsibility of the success or failure of the operation of that piece of machinery. If the user selects a Class "C" crane for his job requirement, when actually a Class "B" crane can adequately handle the work load, he is not offering the most economic solution to his company and added little to the cranes service capabilities.

Can your company afford to issue a check today for $100,000, $500,000, $2,000,000, or $22,000,000? This is what it might cost your company if it is on the losing end of a product liability suit. During the past 10 to 15 years, the number of product liability actions has grown from a handful per year level to a hundreds of thousands per year level. Settlements and awards in the tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars are not unusual in these days. The largest award that the authors haw heard about is a case involving a private airplane and the death of four men, which was awarded over $22,000,000. In the materials handling field, a fork lift truck, ordered with an overhead guard, was delivered without a guard because one was not available at the time. An accident with serious personal injury followed. Wouldn't it have been better to have waited until the guard was available before delivering the unit? Answer: a quarter of a million dollars better -- the cost of the settlement. Hoisting devices are also not without their liability precedents. In a 1960 case, an employee was injured when a load abruptly fell from a hoist. It was determined that the operator could not possibly have caused such a fall had the hoist been functioning properly. The case was compounded when the manufacturer of the hoist contended that the load had been improperly connected to the device, since the same hoist was used to remove the weight from the injured man without another malfunction.

It is a pleasure and a privilege to be with you for the Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.The inaugural meeting of The Institute was held in Adelaide in April, 1893. Through the kindness of your President, who passed on to me several publications concerning The Institutute I have been able to glance back over the eighty years in which The Institute has served both the profession and Australia.In that record, many names of great distinction caught my eyes. When one reads the list of past presidents of the The Institute since 1893 and the list of those to whom The Institute Medal has been awarded, one reads the headings of a biographical dictionary of the Australian mineral industries. Many famous names are there-men from the great mining companies, engineers, scientists, metallurgists and geologists. Simply to read the names is to recall great enterprise and great achievement. Going over those names one hears the echoes of the inspiring story of the establishment of the Australian steel industry, the electrolytic zinc inq.ustry, all the major developments in the mining of coal, gold, copper, silver and lead, the treatment of difficult ores, the geological exploration of a cqntinent, the discovery of uranium, bauxite, petroleum, nickel, the establishment of the alumina industry and finally the mammoth earthmoving operations of today. The list of names is a chronicle of great men who did a mighty work. They stand like milestones in the progress of a nation.When one reads further and runs down the titles of some of the papers published in the Proceedings of The Institute even a layman like myself can appreciate the dramatic developments in mining and metallurgy that have transformed the whole practice of the mineral industries in our land. Australians have made some notable innovations and discoveries both in mining techniques and in the processing of ores. Pennsylvania Power & Light Company is an investor-owned public utility which was incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on June 4, 1920, with general offices at 901 Hamilton Street, Allentown, Pennsylvania. At the present time PP&L is operating five coal-fired steam electric stations, two hydroelectric stations and one steam heat plant which is being converted from anthracite to oil fired. In addition, PP&L is a partner in both the Keystone and Conemaugh mine mouth bituminous coal-fired steam electric stations in Central Pennsylvania and also part owner of a company which operates another hydroelectric station. PP&L plants, other than the two mine mouth stations, are located in Central Eastern Pennsylvania. (Figure 1) The company derives about 99% of its operating revenues from supplying electric service, while the balance is from the one steam heat plant serving the city of Harrisburg. The entire service area covering 10,000 square miles in 29 counties, has a population of approximately 2,300,000 people. The area served is mostly suburban. It includes 109 communities each having a population in excess of 5,000 people. The largest cities served are Allentown, Bethlehem, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Lancaster, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Williamsport which range from 50,000 - 120,000 in population. So you see our service area does not include any major cities. The area has industrial, commercial, residential, agricultural and recreational activities that are linked with the Eastern Megalopolis by an extensive interstate limited-access highway system and railroad networks. We consider this Central Eastern Pennsylvania area we serve as the "heart of the market" -- an area with great growth potential.

To protect the water supply for the Metropolitan Chicago area, the Illinois legislature, in 1889, created the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. To insure the quality of the water supply, the Sanitary District collected and diverted the wastes of 750,000 people away from Lake Michigan. Today, the Sanitary District collects and treats the wastes from a domestic population of 5 ¼ million people and an industrial waste load equivalent to 4 ¼ million people. The District serves Chicago and 120 other cities and suburbs in an 858 square mile area. An average of 1300 million gallons of wastewater is treated each day, producing as a by- product about 700 dry tons of solids which contains more than $10,000 worth of plant nutrients when equated to the value of commercial fertilizer purchased in the retail market. The Sanitary District considered several alternatives to past methods for disposing of these solids, and chose land application as a technique to utilize the solids produced by the wastewater treatment process in a beneficial manner.

Pilot plant grinding and concentration test results indicate that conglomerate native copper ore can be ground and concentrated using conventional techniques. Single stage autogenous grinding and rod mill-ball mill grinding required the same amount of energy far the required comminution. Metallurgical results were comparable for both types of grinding investigated.

Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include: land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas ; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-ways, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys ; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

Roof warning signals were studied in 18 mines covering 5 coal seams. The results of this study confirmed that roof talk must be interpreted for each individual mine after all other conditions are present that indicate danger of roof fall. Characteristics of roof talk pulses were studied to ascertain features used in interpretation. Roof talk pulse decay time was found to be typically 0.1 to 0.5 seconds depending on the dimensions of the entires. Time between roof talk pulses was found to correlate inversely with the degree of danger under certain conditions. Roof talk and machinery noise recordings obtained during this study were used for subjective tests of ear protectors in a simulated coal mine noise environment. These tests required a detailed interpretation of roof talk and yielded results with high statistical power. Results of these tests showed that the use of personal ear protectors in high noise levels does not degrade a miner's ability to discriminate speech and roof talk. A training course was developed to encourage coal miners to pro-tect their hearing by proper use of personal hearing protectors.
