Measurements from an old survey are being machine processed as a pilot project in the development of a computer-assisted method of structural mapping in shield areas. The key element in the system is a field data sheet which requires the geologist to determine a textural hierarchy in each exposure. The pilot system is limited to orientation analysis and utilizes a prior textural analysis, but this would not usually be a problem in utilizing the system ab initio for exploration. A data processing system of this general type offers promise of considerably increased productivity of field geologists by reducing compilation time and improved technical supervision through centralization of processing, and would make structural analysis an economically viable tool in mining exploration and development.

It has been necessary to provide general background information in order to support the view that university education in mining and mineral process engineering should be strengthened rapidly in Australia to provide graduates for the industry.

A method for the detection and analysis of tin in cassiterite ores is discussed. An empirical relationship was established between the tin content of an ore sample and the percentage absorption that this sample produced in a Mossbauer experiment. The time taken to complete an assay with this method is much less than with any of the methods currently in use. The equipment can be adapted readily for use in the field.

The kinetics of sulfidization of hematite (Fe203) by H2S gas at various partial pressures have been determined over the temperature range of 170° to 500°C. The process was controlled by thin films of pyrite (FeS2) and troilite (FeS) which were protective and formed diffusional layers. At higher temperatures the thermodynamic drive to form FeS2 decreased, and consequently the rate of formation of FeS, decreased. Conditions for the development of thin layers of FeSz consisting of 10 to 100 atomic diameters are presented. Laboratory flotation results on synethetic ores indicate floatability identical to that of pyrite of normal xanthate flotation. The prospect of high-temperature sulfidization of metal oxides using H2S, S, or other sulfur bearing compounds is intriguing as a potential activation process for flotation since the thermodynamics are very favorable for a large number of systems. If the kinetic parameters are sufficiently well understood it may be possible to provide surface sulfide layers a few angstroms thick, thus imparting normal sulfide floatability characteristics to the oxide. For thin layers the total sulfur pick-up would be small except for very high surface area materials but in most cases this sulfur could be readily removed by roasting if necessary. The general reactions for the sul-fidization of metal oxide MxO, to a metal sulfide MpSq using H2S may be written for the three conditions py > xq; py < xq; and py = xq: A large thermodynamic advantage is obtained in many systems because of the relatively large negative free energy of formation of H,O compared to H,S. For the temperature range 2S° to 1500°C &apos; where AFOis the standard free energy and T is absolute temperature. As is evident from Eqs. 4 and 5, the free energy of formation of H ,0 is approximately 35 to 37 kilocalories per mole greater than that for H,S over broad variations of temperature. For oxide-sulfide systems as outlined above, sulfidization may be expected to occur for the conditions: Groups I and 111: that is, if the terms on the right are more negative than those on the left the reaction is expected to occur thermodynamically. This study investigates the identity and relative importance of factors affecting the future demand for phosphate rock, potash, and nitrogen. The main objective is to analyze demand relationships for these chemical raw materials for some specified past period, and to utilize this information to make projections of consumption into some designated future period. The end-use approach is used, which divides total consumption of each chemical raw material into agricultural, industrial, and export use. Multiple regression analysis is employed to statistically measure the relative effects of the different factors on consumption in each end use. The general method centers on the construction of a consumer demand model, the fitting of the respective equations in the model, and the interpretation of the statistical results. Direct and cross price elasticities of demand are computed for each end use of the chemical raw materials. These give an insight into expected changes in consumption with respect to given changes in price. The results of this study indicate that price, consumer income, and level of technology are factors which measurably affect consumption of chemical raw materials. For phosphate rock and potash, the agricultural and industrial end uses showed an inelastic demand, whereas for nitrogen, all end uses (including export use) exhibited an elastic demand. Among the chemical raw materials, average annual growth of consumption of nitrogen for agricultural and export uses to 1980 is expected to be notably higher than that for phosphate rock and potash.

Two structurally and mineralogically distinct sulphiderich veins cross-cutting the disseminated sulphides of the Nairne Pyrite Member appear to be products of local remobilization of sulphides under fracture-induced free energy gradients during regional metamorphism and tectonic deformation.The contrasting mineralogy of the two vein types may have arisen as a result of differences in the structural orientation of the veins and!or the relative ages of the veins.

The vapor pressures of liquid titanium and liquid platinum were studied under the Bureau of Mines program for the determination of thermochemical data on the transition elements. Beating was done in a 2-kw electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible to contain the melt. Temperature was measured with a disappearing-filament brightness pyrometer. The vapor pressure data for liquid titanium in the range 2,008° to 2,379° K are represented by the least-squares derived equation [log p (atm) = 6.268 - 22, T] Two series of determinations were made on liquid platinum. Results of the first series are expressed by the least-squares derived equation [log p (atm) = 8.240 - 30,460T] for the range 2,0860 to 2,4200 K. Results of the second series are expressed by the least-squares derived equation [log p (atm) = 7.795 - 29,580 T] in the range 2,045° to 2,442° K. Third-law evaluations of each series gave mean standard heats of sublimation of 112.4 kcal/mole, 133.3 kcal/mole, and 133.8 kcal/mole for titanium first series on platinum, and second series on platinum, respectively. Second-law heats of sublimation and equations for heats, free energies, and entropies of vaporization were obtained from sigma plots of each data set.

The mineral composition and microtextures of a cubanite-rich sulphide ore are described and cubanite breakdown textures are illustrated. The occurrence of cubanite in macroscopic dimensions is featured.The origin of the ore is tentatively related to a composite ore fluid arising initially from an ultramalic source and extracting some metal components from an older granite mass along the margin of which the serpentine was emplaced. Some alternative possibilities as to origin are also mentioned.

The state of stress in the region where core discing initiates has been investigated through the use of three-dimensional photoelastic models and the results of this study have been compared with those of a previous investigation of rock models. This comparison showed that discing initiates at a point of maximum shear stress, but that the magnitude of the shear stress, as determined photoelastically, is much larger than the shear strength of the rock as deter-mined from conventional triaxial testing. Moreover the shear stress required to produce discing is not constant, but depends on the applied stress field. Possible explanations for these effects are included in this article. In both exploration core drilling and overcore drilling to determine the stress in rock, occasional sections of the core obtained are broken into a series of discs.I* This discing phenomenon has been investigated in the laboratory to ascertain the state of stress required to produce it. The objective of the study was to obtain information that would make it possible to approximate the state of stress in subsurface rock from which disced cores are obtained. Referred to as the discing test, this laboratory study was conducted to determine the applied axial and radial loads required to produce discing in cylinders of rock from several sources. The dimensions of these cylinders are given in Fig. 1. Discing was produced by first applying an axial load to the cylinder and then diamond drilling the core along its axis. The radial load was then incrementally increased until discing initiated. The discs fractured or ruptured* on surfaces approximately normal to the axis of the core (planes A, B, C, D, E, Fig. 2). In many instances, the bottommost disc fractured before the drill had advanced past the points F and F&apos;, cre- ating a mush room-shaped fracture surface FEF&apos;. Alternatively, it was also found that the same shaped fracture surface could be created by first drilling in an unloaded core to some point, say F and F&apos;, and then triaxially loading the core until fracture occurred on the plane FEF&apos;. Jaeger and cook4 produced similar fracture surfaces in specimens subjected only to a radial biaxial load. From these laboratory studies and observations made in the field, it can be inferred that fracture or rupture initiates in the proximity of the lowest point in the kerf area, (at F and F&apos;, Fig. 2) and that the fracture or rupture surface progresses inward from this point. The experiments described above, however, do not provide any information as to the state of stress at the point at which fracture or rupture initiates. In the investigation discussed in the following sections, a three-dimensional photoelastic analysis was conducted to determine the stress distribution in the proximity of the kerf area of a triaxially loaded plastic (epoxy) cylinder containing a short section of core.

Over the past several years, state governments have been vigorously refurbishing old health department agencies and smoke control laws in anticipation of pending federal developments. Many states now possess a mature air pollution control administrative organization and a fairly sophisticated set of regulations on air pollution, This developing network of state control legislation and regulation is the machinery which will be called upon to implement federal standards, In order to prevent the wasted effort and resources which inevitably result from hasty action, industry should be in con- tact with local and state control agencies and be familiar with lines of communication to agency representatives. Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, both current and pending, is required. Moreover, federal law and future federal air pollution control plans, should be well known. Industrial air pollution control should be geared to a long range plan which utilizes existing technology while at the same the recognizing that today&apos;s technology will be improved upon with time, Regulation, too, can be expected to become more stringent. The implications of air pollution control in the Appalachian region of the United States will be felt most strongly by the coal industry of this area. Either directly or indirectly most regulations in these states have a significant bearing on coal mining, processing, utilization or waste disposal. The extent of coal-related activity in the Appalachian States of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee can be observed from the data provided in Table I. This data indicates that 86 percent of active bituminous coal mines and 69 percent of bituminous coal production were accounted for by these states. The purpose of this paper is to provide information on current and proposed legislation and regulations on air pollution in the Appalachian states, The information should prove valuable not only to the coal industry but also to industry in general as a means of evaluating both pollution control action that has been taken to date and the course of future control measures. Reference information in the forms of addresses of appropriate agencies and citations to specific state laws and regulations is provided. All information is current as of February, 1969.

Acidic and basic uranium leach plant residues located on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Tuba City, Ariz., were successfully stabilized against wind erosion using a relatively low-cost chemical method. An elastomeric polymer chemical was applied to the dike areas and a calcium magnesium lignosulfonate to the beach areas of three tailings ponds. The water-soluble chemicals were applied with an automated sprinkling system. The stabilization cost was $335 per acre for the 34.5-acre tract.

A petrographic study was made of the type and sources of mineral contamination occurring on phosphate rock products from Florida. Emphasis was placed on contaminants in the screened rock (+1 mm) since this portion of the product undergoes no physical beneficiation except for scrubbing to remove slimes. Since iron and aluminum con- tent of the finished product affect the salability, special emphasis was placed on identifying types and sources of these contaminants and relating chemical composition to visual characteristics. Wavellite derived from the overburden was the major aluminum contaminant with some aluminum being included as secondary clayballs. Iron occurred as phosphates in the overburden, and as colloidal oxides included in the phosphate pebbles. Chert and limestone contamination were derived from the Hawthorne formation underlying the phosphate matrix.

This report presents a study of the Cooper sand of the Fork Run pool of Warren and McKean Counties, Pa., and a prediction of the secondary oil recovery by gasflooding the reservoir. A computer program employing a modification of the Craig, Geffen, and Morse secondary recovery calculation was used to make the gas flood performance forecast and is presented in the appendix. The Cooper sand reservoir in the Fork Run pool lies at a depth of about 1,900 feet and covers an area 1/2 mile wide by 2-1/4 miles long. Original oil in place is estimated to have been 8,266,000 STB. The primary recovery mechanism is solution gas drive, and ultimate primary recovery may reach 20 percent over a well life of 90 years. Two computer predictions were made for gas flooding the Cooper reservoir. The first was for a 25-acre pilot five-spot utilizing existing wells, but project economics were poor since only 25 percent of injection gas is utilized for pilot oil recovery. Recovery was 71,000 STB, or 22 percent of oil in place at flood initiation, but required 25,700 scf gas injected per STB of oil recovered. In the second prediction, pilot area performance was projected for the entire Fork Run pool, and economics became good. Recovery was 1,753,000 STB from 25 five-spots after the injection of only 6,400 scf per STB of oil recovered.

Research on the solid-fuel reduction of Knob Lake iron or was conducted to upgrade lean and high-grade ores and recover metallized products suitable for ironmaking or steelmaking. The program included bench-scale tests plus a number of continuous campaigns in a 34-inch by 36-foot rotary kiln. In the laboratory, metallizations in excess of 90 percent were achieved by reduction of crushed ore with lignite at 950° C. Subsequent grinding (to minus 200 mesh) and wet magnetic separation yielded concentrates analyzing less than 3.0 percent SiO2 and more than 90 percent Fe. Virtually complete recovery of the iron occurred. During early continuous tests the crushed ore created a serious ringing in the kiln which was solved by balling the fines with bentonite. Unfortunately, at this temperature (950° C) the bentonite militates against the concentratability of the metallized product. For example, a run on direct-shipping ore produced concentrates of 89.5 percent Fe and 4.5 percent SiO2. At 500° C the adverse effect of bentonite disappeared and concentrates of 88.4 Fe and only 2.5 percent SiO2 resulted. However, with comparable feed r Los, the metallization dropped to 73 percent.

In my experience, nothing helps me better to get off to a good start in preparing a paper or a talk than a copious consultation with a comprehensive dictionary. I also feel defining the perimeters of a particular subject is helpful to the listener and reader. Sometimes thus precisely defining even the most common of words is helpful. Our general topic this morning as all of you know is "Transportation of Industrial Minerals." The definition of transportation given by the dictionary which I think is appropriate here is: "Systems and modes of conveyance of persons or goods from place to place." Our preceding panelists have outlined for you the state of the art inso¬far as systems and modes of conveyance from place to place are concerned today via rail, water and motor. My assignment is somewhat different as indicated by my topic, "The Traffic Manager in an Industrial Minerals Operation."

In the Santa Eulalia mining district, Chihuahua, Mexico, the main mineral zone occurs in a gently warped dome with simple associated structures and contains orebodies distributed through a vertical range of over 900 m. The stratigraphy of 1945 m of geologic column is described and an abrupt shrinkage is documented in the volume of limestones immediately associated with large orebodies. Termed collapse, this shrinkage occurred during the course of mineralization. Contacts of limestone with igneous sills, and 366 m of fossiliferous limestone beds, particularly the main fossil bed, have been important localizers of ore-bodies. Up-dip gravitational controls may have been important. Fractures have exerted only local controls and over short distances. Thrust zones have displaced diabase sills and in turn have been intruded by upper members of a group of rhyolite porphyry sills. Mineralizers were related to the rhyolite porphyry, and ore has been introduced to the limestone where certain sills lie between the displaced segments of diabase and have been cut by north-south fissures. Speculations are raised that fields of unreleased strain may have influenced orebody locations; the district&apos;s zoning pattern may be a reflection of the filtering effects of large volumes of limestone; and that metal-rich brines mobilized by or incorporated within the invading porphyry might be the source of the mineralizers. PRODUCTION AND LOCATION The Santa Eulalia district has a production record approaching or exceeding 35 million tons of silver-lead-zinc ore from replacement bodies in limestone. In operation since the first years of the 17001s, production has been confined to two intensely mineralized areas separated by 2 km of barren limestone, the West Camp and the East Camp. Probably 50% has been mined since 1908, with over 90% from the West Camp. The West Camp, exploited through a vertical depth of 1945 m and now approaching exhaustion, is the subject of this paper. The district lies in the northern part of the Santa Eulalia Mountains in central Chihuahua in northern Mexico, 400 km south of El Paso, Texas, and 22 km southeast of Chihuahua City. Dominating the northern part of the range is the Cerro de Santa Eulalia, a broad rolling upland which contains the district&apos;s West and East Camps. The West Camp, on the west side of the range, centers around the village of Santo Domingo, which is 2 km northeast of the Real de Santa Eulalia (Fig. 1). REGIONAL GEOLOGY Thick-bedded middle Cretaceous limestones, probably Aurora, form the great bulk of the Cerro de Santa Eulalia. U.S. supply and demand data for petroleum and natural gas liquids, by States and regions, were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. Estimates arcs provided of State-by-State quantitative data for the petroleum and natural gas liquids industry that can be integrated into State, regional, and national energy balances by source, form, and consumer sectors, and used for determination of interstate and interregional energy flows. Tables 1-4 show the estimated total supply of petroleum available for consumption and the supply&apos;s distribution among the major consumer demand sectors (household and commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation). To obtain summary figures for the major proportion of refined products by States, individual tables were compiled for the six major products (tables 5-16). To enable comparison of petroleum data with those for other energy forms, conventional volumetric data in barrels were converted to their British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents. Interregional shipments of crude petroleum and theoretical flow patterns for petroleum products are shown in figures 1-4.

This paper describes variations in feed characteristics, preparation techniques, response to induration and product quality in pelletizing magnetite concentrates, earthy hematite ore fines, and specular hematite concentrates in grate kiln systems. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company manages plants processing these various materials on the Marquette Iron Range in northern Michigan. The operations include the Humboldt Mining Company, Marquette Iron Mining Company, Empire Iron Mining Company and the Pioneer Pellet Plant. The combined output of the operations is approximately 9,000,000 long tons per year. The Humboldt Mining Company, owned by Ford Motor Company and Cliffs, produces pellets from a specular hematite concentrate. The Empire operation, which processes magnetite ore, is owned by Inland Steel Company, McLouth Steel Corporation, International Harvester and Cliffs. The Pioneer operation, which processes earthy hematite ores, is a joint venture of Republic Steel Corporation, McLouth Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Cliffs. The Marquette Iron Mining Company, owned by hones and Laughlin Steel Corporation, International Harvester, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation and Cliffs, produces pellets from specular hematite concentrate at the Republic Mine and Eagle Mills Pellet Plant. With the exception of the Eagle Mills plant, the operations employ the grate-kiln pelletizing system. Descriptions of the Empire, Pioneer and Republic operations, which have a combined capacity of 7,200,000 tons per year, are given in the paper.

An account is given of experimental apparatus for generating a short duration high velocity water jet and the effect of its impingement on various rock samples under air or water cover. The penetration was found to be highly dependent upon the rock structure; in general material with closely interlocking grains was resistant.The damage sustained by a stationary sample held close to the jet did not vary greatly whether the sample was in air or confined under a water layer; but when the sample was translated under the jet there was a marked increase in the damage sustained.Some consideration was given to the possible practical application of a water jet for deep hole drilling and an estimate made of the power requirements and transmission losses for such a system.

The selection of efficiency machinery for an underground mining system is a highly skilled art. Modern techniques of mining, based on sound engineering principles, increase the probability of success. These techniques alone, however, will not guarantee maximum productivity. Human judgement, based on experience with mineral seams and geological conditions, remains the single most important input of the decision-making techniques in selecting high production equipment. The myth of a "Scientific Selection Factor" is absurd. The belief that such a factor exists can waste the time and resources of mining management. Until now, mineral extraction from the original desposit has defied all attempts to systematize the knowledge. Computerized programs are excellent for solving underground transportation and ventilation problems. The variables can be defined by mathe¬matical techniques in this type of problem. By the same, token, "Trial and Error" is not an acceptable method in today&apos;s technology-minded world. The candid truth of the matter is that practically nothing is known of the phenomenon of extracting a mineral from the solid. Likewise, local conditions make it nearly impossible to predict accurately the reaction of surrounding strata after the mineral has been removed. The unpredictability of the environment resulting from extracting minerals underground will remain a challenge to mining engineers for many years. In fact, we are barely beyond the trial and error stage at this point in time.
