With the proving of a mineable orebody at Orlando in May 1961, Peko Mines N.L. was faced with the decision of whether to mill the ore on site or to haul it 25 miles to central facilities at Peko. Orlando was a relatively small orebody, so that it was decided to haul, although no reliable assessment of possible ore haulage costs was available.The necessity for a good haul road was recognised from the beginning and a 17 mile, 12 ft wide, single seal bitumen road was constructed, to link the mine to the Stuart Highway and Peko. The initial selection of 20 ton capacity diesel-powered end-tipping ore carts was made, with the best information available at the time.Since then some 130,000 tons of ore have been carted over a period of 3 years, and this paper presents the experiences of this haulage operation and the lessons learned.A second mine has just been brought into operation at Ivanhoe, 19 miles from Peko. For this haul it was decided to use an ore haulage vehicle of the side tipping road train type, which would cart some 70 tons, or more than three times the load of the vehicles initially selected.Only about 5,000 tons had been hauled at the date of this paper, but preliminary figures indicate a cost 01 1· 65d./ton-mile as against 2·47d. for the smaller vehicles.It would appear that the road haulage of ore from small outlying mines to a central plant can be highly economical, if certain basic rules concerning haul roads and vehicle selection are followed. When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

The planning of an underground mine for successful extraction of a bedded deposit in sedimentary rocks requires the integrated evaluation of many interdependent problems. The development and coordination of feasible solutions are the responsibility of the mining engineer. One of these problems will be discussed herein; this is the design and .layout of mine workings to secure effective control of the strata above and below the deposit. The objective is the simplest possible repetitive system permitting safe maximum recovery at optimum cost. Mining conditions to be encountered must be predictable. The best mining equipment is ineffective unless strata are controlled. Conversely, a mining layout is only of academic interest, if equipment can not be adapted to work it with adequate provision for ventilation, compliance with mining laws, proper ingress and egress and other practical requirements. Strata control, then, is but one of the mining engineer's problems, and the solutions must be worked out concurrently with solutions to other problems. Dr. Karl F. Fetters in his introductory remarks before the Fourth International Conference on Strata Control and Rock Mechanics at Columbia University said that mining engineering ?has come from the stage of empiricism backed by intuitive reasoning, to where it is based on fundamental scientific and engineering principles?. The standard curriculum in mining engineering now reflects such a change. In common with other branches of engineering education, less and less emphasis is placed on practical skills and more and more on broad scientific education. Science, research and the quest for basic truth are stressed, while descriptive courses and the teaching of specific skills are limited.

This Bureau of Mines report provides information on all of the 329 proved salt domes in the Gulf Coastal States and offshore area of the United States. It includes specific data related to location, depth to the cap rock and to the salt, storage facilities for LPG, and production of salt, sulfur, petroleum, and rock related to or associated with the dome structure in the subject area. Also included is a brief history of the salt, sulfur, and petroleum industries as related to the salt domes. Gulf Coast salt domes were the scene of the first discovery of a large deposit of rock salt in North America, the birthplace of the Frasch sulfur industry, and the location of the first large oil gushers that ushered in the modern liquid fuel age.

High-ranking new scientists and engineers -particularly those with the Ph.D. degree -find themselves in an apparently delightful situation; the glow of attention that surrounds them and the dazzling starting salaries that are offered to them may indeed be turning their heads a bit and the attitudes of some of them are sometimes expressed with a smugness that can find its equivalent only in freshmen. On the average, however, the new graduates are, without any doubt, the best trained ever, or at least they have been the most expensive to train in the universities.There appear to be exciting opportunities for competent, well-trained and educated scientists and engineers far beyond the numbers that can be annually produced, and the demands for excellence in depth as well as in breadth of training probably will continue to increase for many years to come. The problem is visible all around us in Canada that there is much more money to buy brains than there are brains to be bought."

A study was made of the coal resources of an area in Jackson County, Ala., forming a part of the Flat Rock, Henegar, and Stevenson quadrangles. The area studied is a portion of the Plateau coalfield on Sand Mountain and is near the Tennessee Valley Authority's Widows Creek steamplant. Since no detailed geological study of this area had been published, some reconnaissance work was done. The coalbeds and adjacent strata such as sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones, and conglomerates were studied. Available drill logs, together with the areal geology, provided sufficient information to permit correlation of the coalbeds and an estimation of coal reserves. For all categories of reserves, computed on a regional basis, a total of 72,920,000 tons of coal more than 14 inches thick is estimated for the areas studied in Stevenson. Flat Rock, and Henegar quadrangles. Of this tonnage, 40,001.000 tons is estimated to have less than 60 feet of overburden. The total measured coal reserves for the above three quadrangles are 16,359,000 tons, with 12,471,000 tons under less than 60 feet of cover.

Coal is one of our basic sources of energy (heat, power, light) and an essential raw material for most metallurgical processing. More than two-thirds of the electricity currently produced by thermal powerplants in the United States is generated by coal, and it is expected that coal will continue to be the major fuel used for this application at least through the 1970's. Coke produced from bituminous coking coal is the principal fuel of iron blast furnaces, and unless ironmaking methods change greatly, coal will continue to maintain a dominant role in iron-ore processing and steel manufacturing for many years. Export markets are expected to increase also, adding to the overall increased demand for coal. Accompanying the increased total requirement, however, will be an ever-increasing demand for higher quality coals, specifically, coals of low sulfur content. Except for special-purpose coals such as those used for the production if coke and ceramics where impurities in the fuel contaminate the end product, the amount of sulfur in coal has been only a minor consideration in the selection of a particular coal for fuel. Major considerations, particularly for the coals used to generate electric power, have been availability and cost. An increased national concern for control of air pollution, however, particularly that resulting from the emission of sulfur oxides in stack gases to the atmosphere, has led to more rigid specifications on coal quality, and the sulfur content of coals will become increasingly more important in the future.

The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) is a new system of tools providing an original approach in drill-stem testing. It improves control during the testing operation and gives a more accurate evaluation of the fluid recovered while providing additional pressure information for reservoir analysis. The tools are operated entirely by up and down motion of the drill stem. This up and down operation provides a positive means of control and offers easily observed surface indications of tool operating position. An unlimited number of shut-in and flow periods may be taken with this tool while in the hole. The key to the success of the MFE system of tools is the safety seal packer. Until this development, operation of the tools by up and down motion only had proven unreliable. The success ratio of the MFE now exceeds the ratio achieved by conventional tools. The equipment includes a 2,750-cc chamber in which a representative sample of the flowing formation fluid is trapped at the end of the last flow period and brought to the surface under pressure. The sample can be evaluated at the wellsite or transferred under pressure for laboratory analysis. The sampling feature of the tool allows a sample to be obtained from a reservoir which has suffered minimum influence from production. A representative sample can be obtained for laboratory or empirical analysis by employing a testing technique to minimize drawdown during flow periods. Interpretation methods to take advantage of this additional information are presented and supported by actual field examples. INTRODUCTlON The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) represents the most recent technical advance in formation testing. Drill-stem testing techniques prior to the MFE have been limited in three areas—(1) operaiion, (2) recovery analysis, and (3) reservoir analysis. The tools in the MFE system allow maximum control during testing and provide test information superior to that obtainable with conventional tools. A study was made of scrap iron and steel in the South Central States in order to determine trends in processing, shipment, and consumption if this important commodity. These data were derived in part from statistical sources and in part by visits to scrap yards and steel mills. Trends in the industry were reviewed. Dealers in 1963 supplied 1.8 million tons of iron and steel scrap to steel mills and foundries in the south-central area, compared with 2.1 mill ion tons in 1955. Most of the scrap was processed and shipped within 200 to 300 miles of consuming centers. Exports provide a principal outlet for dealers along the gulf coast. Most of the scrap that fills these orders is loaded onto freight cars at yards in Texas and Louisiana and is shipped to ports for direct transfer from railroad car to ship. The tonnage exported varies greatly from year to year. The largest scrap operations are in or near large cities which are heavy scrap generating areas, steel mill sites, or port cities for export of scrap. A tentative analysis indicates that the short-run supply of prepared scrap is inelastic to price changes; therefore, buyers probably are in a strong bargaining position at times of declining demand. One technological development in the iron and steel scrap industry is the use of large presses which can take complete automobiles with frames, wheels, springs, and other heavy parts still intact and reduce them to bundles. At Houston, Tex., and Kansas City, Mo., shredding plants are in operation that reduce car bodies and other light scrap into flat pieces 4 to 6 inches in size.

Essential features of the role of the fill material in mechanized cut and fill mining are discussed, with particular emphasis on its dewatering and strength development after emplacement. The fill material is regarded as a chemically-reactive porous medium, the most important property of which is permeability. Methods are described for measurement of permeability and other fill properties and results of such measurements applied to develop an orderly approach to the operation.

The experimental points which describe capillary pressure curves are determined at apparent equilibria which are observed after bydrodynamic flow has ceased. For most systems, the time required to obtain equalization of pressure throughout the discontinuous part of a phase is prohibitive. To permit experimental points to be described as equilibria, a model of capillary behavior is proposed where mass transfer is restricted to bulk fluid flow. Model capillary pressure curves follow if the path described by such points is independent of the rate at which the saturation was changed to attain a capillary pressure point. Aemodified suction potential technique is used to study cyclic relationships between capillary pressure and moisture content for a porous mass. The time taken to complete an experiment was greatly reduced by using small samples. INTRODUCTION Capillary retention of liquid by porous materials has been investigated in the fields of hydrology,l soil science,2 oil reservoir engineering,3 chemical engineering," soil mechanics,5 textiles: paper making: and building materials In studies of the immiscible displacement of one fluid by another within a porous bed, drainage columnsl and suction potential techniques2 have been used to obtain relationships between pressure deficiency and saturation (Fig. 1). Except where there is no hysteresis of contact angle and the solid is of simple geometry, such as a tube of uniform cross section, there is hysteresis in the relationship between capillary pressure and saturation.2 The relationship which has received most attention is displacement of fluid from an initially saturated bed (Fig. 1, Curve R2), the final condition being an irreducible minimum fluid saturation Swr. Imbibition (Fig. 1, Curve A), further desaturation (Fig. 1, Curve R), and intermediate scanning curves have been studied to a lesser but increasing extent.2 ,3,9-12 This paper first considers the nature of the experimental points tracing the capillary pressure curves with respect to the modes and rates of mass transfer which are operative during the course of measurement. There are clear indications that the experimental points which describe these curves are obtained at apparent equilibria which are observed when viscous fluid flow has ceased; and any further changes in the fluid distribution are the result of much slower mass transfer processes, such as diffusion. Unless stated otherwise, this discussion applies to a stable packing of equal, smooth, hydrophilic spheres supported by a suction plate5 with water as the wetting phase and air as the nonwetting phase. This examination report includes the salient statistics on the production of pegmatite minerals other than quartz and feldspar; and brief descriptions of 170 specific pegmatite deposits.

A genesis based on new developments in the physical chemistry and flow properties of colloidal substances is proposed for the pipe-like Peko orebody. The rheological behaviour of sediments is governed by the contained colloids. Remobilization of thick pasty sediment during diagenesis is regarded as an essential step in the concentration of metal dispersed in sediments. At a high concentration the sediment pore fluid is a dense gelloid such that van der Waals attractive forces between the colloidal particles exceeds the coulombic repulsion. This permits accretion of the colloids into globular clots and their fracture fragments. These have a uniform size distribution dependent upon the rate of shear, and the sediment lithifies to clotted, porphyry-like, "gritty", dolomitic or igneous-looking intrusions and flows. The physical chemical properties of natural sediment colloids appear adequate to account for ore formation.Adsorption accounts for the dispersion and retention of metal in sediments. Accretion accounts for the segregation of the colloidal materials to give the various types of clotted igneous-looking intrusive source rocks. Syneresis enables the colloids to spontaneously draw together and to dehydrate. Formation of an ordered lattice achieves a lower energy state and desorbs metals and insoluble metal compounds "particle by particle" into the escaping water of hydration and pore water. Peptization enables migration of the metal hydrosols as stable dispersions until they merge for outflow through seepage zones or water extrusion channels. Nucleation and concretion precipitate the metal dispersoids from pore waters seeping through hydrous parts of the source rock, porous beds, faults, and zones of weakness by which the connate waters leave the lithifying sediments. Gelatinous precipitated mineral matter in the ore channels is capable of thixotropic reliquefaction when disturbed by shock or movement. Local reintrusion, flowage, interveinings,brecciation, and intermixing of the materials is the result.The principles of the suggested genesis are applicable to both syngenetic and epigenetic mineral accumulations.

A study of the mechanics of shear failure of rock under pressure has been made. The transition from brittle to ductile failure occurs when the friction along the fracture surfaces exceeds the shear strength of the rock. A machine has been developed for measuring both the shear strength of rock and the friction along rock fracture surfaces. In this shear machine, the fractures are forced along definite planes; as a result, the rock is stronger than in compression tests where the fractures choose the weakest paths through the specimens. Friction is composed of several forces: (1) the forces to slide irregulurities on surfaces over each other; (2) forces to shear some of these irregularities; (3) molecular attractions across the fractures; and (4) forces required to break bonds resulting from melting and welding at the tips of irregularities on the surfaces. Friction along rock fracture surfaces is not proportional to contact pressure as usually assumed; instead, it increases as the contact pressure raised to the 0.4 to 0.8 power. INTRODUCTION It is difficult to produce tensile stresses under the high compressive stresses present in the earth; therefore, in deep drilling and geological faulting, shear failure predominates. This shear failure mechanism is complicated because rock is a heterogeneous material containing pore spaces, microfractures, elastic discontinuities and other imperfections. A study of shear failure of rock under pressure has been made to obtain a better understanding of this complex mechanism. A machine has been developed and used to measure the shear strength of rock and friction along sheared surfaces. This machine has certain advantages over the compression test — shear properties can be measured under low normal stresses and shear stress and normal stress can be varied independently. The first part of this paper is a description of shear failure of rock under pressure. The role of shear strength and friction along fracture surfaces in the shear failure mechanism will be discussed. The second part consists of a description of the shear machine and a discussion of the shear strength and friction data obtained using this machine. It will be shown that shear strength depends upon the size of the stressed zone, and that friction does not increase linearly with contact pressure as usually assumed. Attempts are made to relate some of the new concepts to tectonic failure and to dril ling. SHEAR FAILURE IN ROCK TRIAXIAL TESTS The shear failure mechanism is illustrated by the triaxial test shown in Fig. 1. In this test, a cylindrical rock specimen is subjected to a confining pressure, PC, and an axial pressure, pa. These external pressures produce normal a and shear T stresses on inclined planes within the specimen equal to1 where 0 is the angle between the specimen axis and a normal to the inclined plane. Tremendous improvements in mining technology have been witnessed during the past 100 years. For example, before 1860 all blastholes were drilled manually and blasting was done with low-energy black-powder. During the 1860's both the pneumatic rock drill and high-energy dynamite were introduced, ushering in an era of mining mechanization that has steadily progressed since that time. Today, with the rapid implementation of the latest advances in communication science, mining technology is moving into a new era that goes beyond mechanization as such. Transistors, transducers, scanners, telemetry, and the like, all terms largely derived from the new communication sciences, add up to what is popularly know as automation-the communication of machine with machine. Automation is now playing an important role in selected parts of the mining process, such as hoisting, hydraulic roof supports, and underground surface locomotive haulage and belt conveyor systems. But this year marked the first attempt to auto-mate the total mining process with the commencement of production at the British National Coal Boards Bevercotes mine. If this full-scale experiment proves successful, it could lead towards other fully automated mines in both Britain and other parts of the world. This decade, there-fore, could be considered the one that provided the foundation for the mines of the future.

Into this tumultuous twentieth century, every second, two new babies are born. This is 5,412 per hour, and 130,000 per day. Relentlessly, consistently, alarmingly, they add to the more than three billion human beings who already inhabit the earth. Every tick of tier clock brings with it a problem child, the problem of another mouth to feed, another body to clothe, another human being for whom to provide. On the other hand, medical science has achieved a postponement of death, considerably past the period of a few years ago. Thus, life expectancy has been increased and world population has increased accordingly. Darwin (4) writing in 1962, suggests "It is curious how long the world is taking to perceive that we are living in what is a fantastically abnormal period of history, and one which must inevitably end soon, The first warning note of a possible population explosion was given by Malthus in 1799". He suggested that population increases geometrical while production increases only arithmetically and that soon we would not be able to feed the rapidly increasing population.
