In this chapter there is a wide difference in the meaning of some words used for rock and mineral names as defined by scientists and tabulated in the "Glossary of Geology and Related Sciences," published in 1957 by the American Geological Institute, and the meaning as used by the commercial producers of feldspar. It is necessary, therefore, to define these terms giving both the "scientific" and the "practical" definitions. There is no ambiguity about the name feldspar itself. This is a general term for a group of related minerals which are silicates of aluminum, combined with sodium, potassium and calcium. The feldspars are the most abundant minerals of the igneous rocks, and since these rocks make up the largest proportion of the earth's crust by volume (although not of the actual surface area of the continental land masses) the feldspars are the most abundant minerals of all. The igneous rocks themselves are classified on the basis of the variety of the feldspar present. The potash feldspars, which are called orthoclase and microcline, are the dominant minerals of the granites and syenites, and of their fine grained equivalents, the rhyolites and trachites. The plagioclase feldspars form an isomorphic series, of which the sodic endmember is called albite, and the lime endmember, anorthite. The members near the sodic end, albite, oligoclase and andesine are the characteristic feldspars of the granodiorites and diorites, and of their fine grained equivalents, the dacites, and andesites. These feldspars-orthoclase, microcline, albite oligoclase and andesine-are the feldspars used commercially. Labradorite, a member of the plagioclase group, in which the lime exceeds the soda in the chemical composition, is the common feldspar of the gabbros, anorthosites, norites, basalts and other so-called "basic" rocks. Although some attempts have been made to use labradorite as a commercial feldspar, none is now used except as an ornamental stone. The mineral anorthite is very rare. Since the feldspar in most of the common igneous rocks is relatively fine grained, and mixed intimately with other minerals, from which it can be separated cleanly only with difficulty, most masses of the common rocks cannot be used as sources for the feldspar contained in them. It is only the rarer types of rocks in which the feldspar is very coarse-grained, or ones containing very little of the iron-bearing minerals which are objectionable impurities in commercial feldspar, that are quarried to yield an acceptable product. The most widespread type of such a rock from which commercial feldspar can be produced, is that called "pegmatite." These rocks are dikes and bodies of irregular shape and of a size measured in feet or yards in most cases, rather than in miles. They are more commonly associated with granites, rather than with other coarse-grained igneous rocks. Many of them contain crystals of various minerals, including the feldspars, that are much larger than are found in the host rock, the granite, and in many there are large masses of feldspar that are sufficiently free from iron-bearing silicates so that products acceptable to the ceramic industry can be produced, in some cases simply by hand sorting. Most of this feldspar in pegmatites, however, does contain intergrown quartz up to 25 pct. Tables showing world trade in metallic mineral raw materials during the years 1953 through 1957 have been prepared for the following twenty-one commodities: alumina, aluminum, bauxite, chromite, copper concentrates, partly refined and fully refined copper metal, iron ore, pig iron, iron and steel (simple shapes), lead concentrates, lead metal, manganese ore, mercury metal, nickel ore, concentrates, and matte, nickel metal, raw pyrites, sintered pyrites, tin concentrates, tin metal, zinc concentrates, and zinc metal. In each instance, the amounts given by the importing country were used except when statistics from the importing nation were lacking, incomplete, or misleading. To show the considerable divergence between importing and exporting country totals for the same years, the complete mercury table is given and, in parallel columns, shows the comparable tonnages of importers and exporters. Tables for the other twenty commodities are presented in summary form. The data of the concentrate tables are used with those of the corresponding metals as a basis for a discussion of trade in concentrates versus trade in metals. The data of all twenty-one tables provide the basis for testing the thirteen rules governing international trade in metal raw materials which I first published in Mining Engineering for July 1955. Because the 1953 through 1957 data are far more complete and considerably more extensive than those on which the 1955 rules were based, it was found possible to deduce five additional rules and to modify three of the original thirteen appreciably. The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. Conventional methods for determining the size of dust suspended in a gas require that agglomerates (clusters of particles) first be broken into particles, but in evaluating industrial dust-removing equipment the size of the agglomerates as they actually exist in the gas stream is far more important. This paper presents results of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines to develop methods for determining the size of dust agglomerates suspended in a gas stream. The studies are part of the Bureau's continuing research on synthetic liquid fuels. The size and size-distribution of agglomerates as they exist when the gas reaches the filter was determined by using a membrane filter in conjunction with a dust count under a microscope. A membrane filter is a cellulosic sheet about 150 microns thick containing millions of holes per square centimeter--holes of uniform diameter that run directly through the sheet without interconnection.

A cement, in the broad sense, is any substance which will cause various materials to adhere to each other. Clay was probably the first material to be used by man as a cement or binding agent. Water occurs in or is mixed with the clay to make it plastic, so that it can be formed in place. The sun and air remove the water from the clay and on drying strength is developed. The clays unless fired are not too resistant to water, therefore, their use is best when restricted to dry areas. Gypsum used as a cementitious material is not the subject of this paper, but its use dates back thousands of years. Gypsum mortars were used by the Egyptians in building such massive masonry structures as the pyramids. The Egyptian mortar consisted of a mixture of sand with burned gypsum (of an impure type of 81.5 per cent calcium sulphate and 9.5 per cent calcium carbonate) for the cementitious material. The burning of this type of cementitious material took place at relatively low temperature. These burning reactions will be covered later when the dehydration of gypsum is discussed. The setting of the partially dehydrated gypsum is considered to be crystallization from a supersaturated solution which deposits crystals of dihydrate (gypsum). In low water-content mixes, the interlocking of the needle-like crystals helps to produce higher strengths. Slaked lime made from limestone burned at higher temperatures (1648 F is generally considered as the calcining temperature, although under certain conditions incipient calcination will take place at 1250 F) is another early-period cementitious material. During slaking with water, a colloidal or amorphous hydrated lime is formed. When it is allowed to dry, it hardens and develops low strengths. On exposure to the carbon dioxide of air in the presence of some moisture, carbon dioxide is adsorbed and part of the calcium hydroxide is converted to calcium carbonate. Structures in which a lime mortar is used continue to grow in strength as this reaction proflesses. Hydrated lime has the disadvantage of not setting under water.

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. You have asked me today to tell you how quarried stone is meeting the challenges of contemporary architecture. The new position of stone, the oldest building material, in contemporary architecture, was described to me very concisely the other day by a very distinguished avant garde architect. He said rather wryly, "Do you know, if quarried stone had only just been discovered, we would all be calling it the most miraculous of all the modern miracle building materials." His prognosis was, I believe, much more than a witty quote. It echoes the surprise and. enthusiasm with which a considerable segment of the architectural profession is rediscovering stone as a most modern building material that offers unsurpassed values in beauty and practicality - well deserving of the term "miracle".

Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. I-type briquette was the largest size which the plant could handle.This carbonization plant represents the intermediate stage of development between the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne and the commercial production of hard char as a metallurgical fuel. RESEARCH strengthened the position of cesium as the preferred material (commonly but erroneously called "fuel") for ionic propulsion engines. Its use as an element of the plasma thermocouple for generating electricity also seemed more likely. Domestic Production.-No domestic ore of cesium and rubidium was produced. San Antonio Chemicals, Inc., San Antonio, Tex., and Maywood Chemical Works, Maywood, N.J., continued to produce cesium and rubidium compounds including carbonate, chromate, hydroxide, nitrate, sulfate, and all four halides. Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., began producing various cesium and rubidium salts. American Potash & Chemical Corp., Los Angeles, Calif., offered cesium and rubidium for sale.

Leonardite is a coallike substance, similar in structure and composition to lignitic coal and believed to be derived from lignitic coal by the process of natural oxidation. Leonardite is little known outside lignite-producing areas and has been developed commercially only to a minor extent. The higher oxygen content and less compact structure of leonardite, compared with lignite, make it undesirable as a fuel but indicate that it has potential as a source of chemicals and for other nonfuel uses. It is a convenient source of humic acids. The United States has a large natural reserve of leonardite; furthermore, it can be produced in the laboratory under controlled conditions. The significant elemental difference between leonardite and lignite is the oxygen content (leonardite, 28-29 percent; lignite, 19-20 percent). The higher oxygen content of leonardite is due entirely to a Larger number of carboxylic acid groups. This fact explains the 17-Cold increase in alkali solubility of leonardite. Spectral studies indicate that the material is mixed salts of humic acids.

To obtain information on the effects of cobalt on microstructure and tensile properties of titanium-vanadium-cobalt alloys, the composition ranges of 4 to 16 percent vanadium with 1 to 4 percent cobalt have been studied. The beta phase was not completely retained with vanadium additions up to 16 weight-percent or in the same alloys containing up to 4 percent cobalt.

In keeping with past custom, it is the purpose of this publication to bring up to date previously published lists of equipment that meets safety standards of the bureau of Mines so that the mining industry may be informed as to the development and availability of equipment that can be used safely. The present lists supplement those in Bulletin 543. Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953; Information Circular 7722, Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54; and Information Circular [40], Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1955-56. These [ew] lists also contain equipment meeting those standards revised since the last listing. A revision of Schedule 16C (now Schedule 16D4/) was officially approved on September 28. 1958. Schedule 29 was another standard revised in 1958. The revision was officially approved on September 8. 1958, and is known as Schedule 29A5/ .

High purity alloys of zinc with 25 per cent to 50 per cent aluminum, have been prepared. Mechanical properties of the as-cast and heat-treated alloys have been related to constitution, determined by x-ray diffraction and microscopic methods. Investigations include the effects of aging and of small nickel additions on the properties of the alloys.

Some major mineral deposits in northern Australia are found in preconsolidation slump disturbances in the sediments.In the retransported marine sediments at Tennant Creek, breccia beds and disturbances are found which have localized later mineral deposits such as the Peko copper orebody. These disturbances are thought to result from slumping, turbidity flow and various types of "semi-fluidized" subaqueous slides intermediate between slumps and turbidity currents.Movements are found to ~ause widespread disturbances in the sediments such that subsequent mineralization can spread through a large volume of rock giving rise to orebodies greater than those localized by tectonic structures.A similarity is noted between the sedimentary disturbances at Tennant. Creek and those at Mount Isa and Mary Kathleerr. It is suggested that disturbed beds which are host rocks to ore minerals in these mines may also be due to movements of the sediments before compaction.Certain characteristics of the slumped rocks can be recognized and limited generalizations can be made about the shape, extent and habit of these host rocks and the orebodies they contain.INTRODUCTIONSubmarine slumping and· turbidity current retransport are almost entirely responsible for some types of deep marine sediments.However, little attention has yet been drawn to slump deposits and associated disturbances bedded in the sediments as features localizing later mineralization.A study. has been made by the writer of the slump and associated phenomena of the ,Tennant Creek field where many mineralized bodies, including some gold and copper orebodies, occur as replacements of coarse fragmental slump...

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

The geology of the area studied is briefly described, together with the prospecting methods used in the search for copper, lead, zinc and uranium ore bodies.Four prospects, Mt. Corella, Yanasinga, Lawlor's and Greenmount, which were diamond-drilled, are described in detail and geochemical results are discussed in relation to the mineralization found. Copper anomalies were found wherever intrusive rocks were mapped, and showed a much closer relation to geology and mineralization than did the predominantly lead and zinc anomalies.Geochemical prospecting aids in the overall mineral search programme because of its speed and economy, as it helps to pinpoint areas worthy of detailed geological examination. Geochemical anomalies are a guide to favourable zones but may not indicate the presence of ore.INTRODUCTIONDuring 1953-55 the National Lead Company of New York carried out a search for minerals in an area south and west of Cloncurry (Fig. 1) in rocks of Precambrian age. After reconnaissance mapping, a number of prospects were chosen for closer examination by detailed geological mapping and geochemical sampling, and from these prospects, five sites were selected for drilling.This paper records the salient features of the exploration programme and discusses the geology and geochemistry of four of the prospects-Mt. Corella, Yanasinga, Lawlor's and Greenmount. Practically all the prospects examined showed high zinc "anomalies" or "dispersion" trains. Greta, Mt. Corella and Lawlor's prospects showed some copper anomalies and, to a lesser extent, lead anomalies. In particular, Greenmount exhibited striking copper anomalies.

The construction of the pipeline was completed in June 1956 and the line placed into operation in December 1956, ie. it has now been in continuous operation for approximately three years under an operating pressure of up to 350 lb. p.s.i.In reviewing the operating experiences of the line we must consider three major factors, which are:(a) The effectiveness to date of the protective methods for prevention of corrosion of the pipeline, ie. the preservation of the asset.(b) The maintenance of the line in regard to interference as to its stability which could be occasioned by erosion of the line, land-slides, accidental interference by the public, or construction authorities, etc.(c) The operating techniques employed.PROTECTIVE METHODS OF THE PIPELINESo to permit a clearer appreciation of the effectiveness of the protection of the! steel pipe against corrosion, I will briefly describe the methods used in the construction of the line.The line, which is 18 in.
