Disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas is a continually increasing problem. The necessity for studying this problem has been realized more generally in recent years, and in August 1934 an agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the United States Bureau of Mines to conduct a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal. To date one paper in the technical press4/ and three reports5/6/ have been published in which are given results of studies carried on under this cooperative agreement. In the Mid-Continent fields, the methods used most generally for handling oil-field brines are: (1) Impounding in evaporation ponds; (2) controlled diversion into surface streams; and (3) injection into subsurface formations through wells assigned for this purpose. Various States recognize one or more of the methods as legally authorized procedure. IN the closing months of 1936 the copper industry gave every evidence that it was at last on the threshold of an improved era. At the beginning of the year prices stood at 9 1/4¢, which in itself was a great improvement over prices prevailing for the three previous years. Industry generally was showing signs of moving forward in this country, and business was definitely good in certain foreign quarters. The threat of war and prep-arations for rearmament in Europe and Asia acted as a further stimulus purchasing. By midsummer the situation had so improved and stocks to been so reduced that the cartel of foreign producers (including American producers with foreign mines) decided to increase the produc-tion quota to 75 per cent on Aug. 1. Large-scale buying gave continued strength to the price and by Oct. 1 the quota was increased to 80 per cent, and again on Oct. 15, to 85 per cent. Notwithstanding this the price of copper continued its advance and on Nov. 1, with stocks declining con-tinuously, the cartel increased operations to 95 per cent, then to 105 per cent on Nov. 5. In the meantime the domestic producers, because of the great increase in home consumption, had increased their production by nearly one-half. At the close of the year copper sold at 120 per pound, and since the turn of the present year has reached 170. This rapid increase has not been wholly justified. Much of the increase was due to the legitimate demands of recovering industry, but rearmament orders plus accumulation of reserve stocks in case of war, purchases in anticipation of labor strikes and purely speculative activities on the London Metal Exchange accounted for the balance. Certainly in view of the state of industry and the general world price level, it appears unnecessarily high. Talk of a copper shortage is sheer nonsense, the recent condition in the market being created by overbuying, leaving but a small volume for speculative supplies. The general nature of the special constructional features that are required to provide safety from explosion hazards on machines approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines is fairly well known to mining men who are at all interested in safety. These requirements are outlined in the schedules, under the provisions of which the investigations of such machines are conducted. Also, the method of conducting inspections and. tests of such machines has been described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. A more detailed knowledge of the special safety features of a particular machine is often useful and sometimes essential for inspectors, safety engineers, maintenance men, and engineers in selecting machines for a particular application. Three bulletins that give information of this nature have been published by the bureau, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotives and Power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 382, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment.

In June 1933 the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce,, published a report of the gas reserves in the Oklahoma City oil field3/ based upon data as of October 1932, at which time there were 43 classified gas wells in the field, The estimates were obtained by the ?porosity-area" method. There are two general methods of estimating natural-gas reserves. The porosity-area method, as used by Hill and Rawlins, is used when a gas field is comparatively new but after enough drilling has been done to determine the average thickness, porosity, and areal extent of the producing horizon. The "pressure-volume? method of estimating gas reserves, the method used in this report, may be used after a sufficient volume of gas has bean withdrawn from the reservoir to cause an appreciable decline in reservoir pressure.

A study of the records on file in the Bureau of Mines reveals that moray fire in coal mines have been started by electrical equipment or circuits. There the fires were of undetermined origin, electricity often was Strongly suspected as the probable cause. While it is unfortunate that positive evidence as to the cause is so often lost in the general destruction resulting from fires, there are many lessons to be learned from fire s in which the origin was definitely established as electrical. For modern high-speed methods of producing coal, electrically operated machinery has become virtually indispensable underground. With increases in the amount of equipment it has not always been necessary to increase the number of circuits in the mine where direct current is mainly used, but it has been necessary to increase the carrying capacity of these circuits. For example, lends such as heavy-haulage units drawing 1,000 amperes or more have brought boat the introduction of 6/0 and "No. 9 section" trolley wires. This has not made the task of fire prevention any easier, for it has meant that circuit breakers s must be set so high that partial short circuits fail to open them, therefore an arc of considerable proportions can be maintained without causing the, beaker to open. Thus, if as fall of roof brought a trolley wire down against a loaded car of coal, an arc might be struck that would ignite they cowl without opening the circuit breaker.

In a previous report,6 results were given that showed the amount of natural ventilation in a manhole having a capacity of 74.l cubic feet when the number of ventilation openings in the cover was varied. from no openings to a maximum of 48. The results showed that the ventilation (air changes per day) in the manhole was proportional to the area of the openings in the cover, and also that the number or area of the openings was the factor that chiefly affected the ventilation.

The most important lithium resource in the United States is in the form of the feldspathoid mineral spodumene. This mineral has not been used to any important extent as a source of lithium salts or lithium metal, as other more easily decomposed minerals have been available in sufficient quantity to supply the relatively small demand. The need for cheaper lithium salts for such promising new uses as air conditioning or dehumidification and of lithium feldspar for use in the glass and [ramic] trades has justified the recent work done by the Bureau of Mines on [king] available, through improved beneficiation and extractive processes, some of the lower grade but extensive spodumene deposits.

EVERY mathematical statement of a measure of anything (as distin-guished from a count) is followed by a qualification always implied if not explicity stated--that the statement is only an estimate, which may vary from absolute accuracy within certain limits, according to the accu-racy of the measuring instrument. This basic fact, so obvious to engineers, is not so well understood by many that make use of laboratory coal tests. The tolerances that must be allowed in measurements of coal quality are very important in both their commercial and engineering applica-tions-and the significance of these tolerances depends upon the use made of the laboratory coal test. Only in recent years has there been any intensive study of this ques-tion of tolerances as applied to measurements of coal quality. There is very little in our published literature on the subject, and what has been published is not, readily comprehended by those who sell coal, or buy coal and use it, unless they happen to have made a study of the subject them-selves. There is great need for more widespread understanding of what has been discovered and how it applies to the use of laboratory coal tests. What follows is an attempt to condense into a few pages the results of the major investigations so far reported, and to explain their meaning in simple nontechnical language, with the addition of some recent illustrative experiments.

The importance of "good voltage,? especially for direct-current systems in coal mines, is not always fully appreciated. From the practical 4 aspect there are three viewpoints from which low voltage may be considered, namely: (a) its effect upon operation of electrical equipment, (b) its effect upon cost of maintenance and power, and (c) its effect upon safety in the mine. The design of electrical motor-driven equipment usually is based upon a given or assumed constant value for the voltage of the system; consequently, when there is an appreciable drop below this value, unsatisfactory operation is likely to follow. In the case of shaker conveyors, for example, one manufacturer has pointed out that these conveyors must be operated at a certain definite speed if maximum output is to be secured. As shunt motors are used in the conveyor drives, either a rise or fall in voltage will produce corresponding changes in speed and thus seriously affect the efficiency of the conveyor. The introduction of automatic control for mine equipment has been greatly retarded because the relays, contactors, and other special devices required have failed to function properly when attempt was made to operate them on systems subject to variable and low-voltage conditions.

Michigan is becoming one of the important oil-producing States of the country. The amount of crude oil produced within its boundaries has increased from only 4,000 barrels in 19253/ to nearly 16 million barrels in 19935.4/ The Bureau of Mines method of crude-oil analysis and classification-indicates that the oils from the several producing fields are predominantly paraffin-intermediate-base, wax-bearing crudes. In general, they will yield 25 to 35 percent of highly paraffinic gasoline and about the t- me amount of kerosene and gas-oil combined, 7.2 to 15 percent of lubricating oil stock, and 20 percent of residuum with a carbon residue or about 6 to 7 percent. In addition, there appears to be some correlation between certain properties of the crude oils and both the geographical location and geological structure of the oil-producing areas within the State. These general conclusions are based on the analytical data presented in this report, which is one of a series of papers that record the general characteristics of crude oil from the many producing fields of the United States. This report discusses briefly the oil fields of Michigan and the characteristics of the crude oils produced from them. The analyses of 15 samples are given. These samples were obtained from 13 fields in 9 counties in the lower peninsula and represent crude oils produced from the Berea sandstone, Upper Traverse and Traverse limestones, and the

The United States Bureau of clines has been conducting Investigations of electrical equipment during a period of more than 25 years in an endeavor to encourage the development of safer electrical equipment for coal mines. In order to conduct these investigations in an orderly manner they are carried out under a published schedule of tests known as Schedule 2C, which specifies detailed requirements for motors, controllers, etc., and fees covering the various inspections and tests made as part of a routine investigation.

SILVER is not only of paramount importance to millions of people as a medium of savings and to other millions as a medium of exchange, but it is also valuable and useful in industry. Mexico continues to be the largest producer of this metal, followed by the United States, Canada, and Peru. The largest consumers are China and India, which normally absorb about two-thirds of the world's mine production, hoarding it as savings. The imports by these countries exert a powerful influence upon the price, yet neither country is on the silver standard. China having abandoned it in 1935 and India in 1893, when the rupee was definitely linked to the pound sterling. Other nations such as Persia, Ethiopia, Mexico, and many of the South American countries either have been on the silver standard or have used silver as their chief circulating medium, and most large nations use it for subsidiary coins, this use accounting for 20 to 30 million ounces annually. The arts and industries have consumed 35 to 40 million ounces each year.

AS this is written, the probability A is that the bituminous coal out- put for 1936 will approximate 420,000,000 tons (of 2000 lb.) with an average working time for all mines of 205 days. The results for 1935 approximated 369,224,000 tons, with the mines working about 185 days. The increase in production of 14 per cent is heartening. In anthracite, it is probable that the preliminary figures covering output for 1935, 51,- 003,000 tons, will be exceeded this year although the percentage of in- crease will almost certainly be small. The substantial tonnage of anthracite illegally mined, estimated to be 3,600,- 000 tons in 1935, with a similar large Lonnage in 1936, is in addition to the figure given above; it represents an open and flagrant disregard of law and property rights. It is hard to understand why the officials of the State of Pennsylvania do not enforce the laws against theft and brigandage, more so when the legitimate employees of the established producing proper-
