NINETEEN Thirty-Six was the biggest year in volume in the history of the oil industry, and unquestionably the best since 1929 in respect to profits. The quota of new and difficult problems to face seemed a little smaller during 1936 than in most recent years, and a somewhat better balance existed between the different branches of the industry. 'Domestic consumption of gasoline in 1936, estimated at about 475 million barrels-the highest on record, was approximately 11 per cent above 1935, and 26 per cent above 1929. Demand for crude oil increased in about the same proportion: over 1935, and the average production, of about three million barrels daily,' constituted a new high level.

METHODS of coal preparation have been greatly developed and improved during the past few years. Under the pressing competition from substitutes that have been displacing coal as a source of heat or power, the coal industry has been able, in many cases, not only to hold its own but to regain much of the lost ground, by offering better products of a higher value. The purpose of this paper is to present, in a brief and simple form, the principles of the latest methods and machinery used in coal preparation, in order to enable the coal operator t0 select methods and equipment capable of solving his own problems in the most efficient and economical way. The paper will deal, in the main, .with coal cleaning. It must be emphasized, however, that a complete coal preparation study covers many other operations, such as handling, screening, de-dusting, dust-proofing, and ash-conditioning. Handling Coal From the producing face to the railway car, coal must be handled with great care, t0 prevent degradation, because the coarser sizes are not only easier to clean than fines but, for our markets, they are often the more valuable. Generally speaking, such care is less important or is unnecessary in the Old Country, where conditions are different. The best way to minimize breakage is to avoid gravity methods in coal transportation. All chutes in a preparation plant should be shaken mechanically, and cleaning processes requiring large surge bins must be avoided. De-Dusting De-dusting of coal is accomplished by the use of vibrating screens, fans, or classifiers, or by a combination of these. Fines below 1/32-in. (or coarser than this, with some coals) can very seldom be cleaned efficiently. Common practice is to discard them immediately, if the moisture content of the coal allows this to be done. Otherwise, they are liable to give unnecessary trouble, either in the form of dust or sludge, which are difficult to collect or to settle. Flotation is the only process which will effectively clean fines.

During the past five years we have probably witnessed greater technological advances than in any similar period. Industry and science have steadily marched ahead. The makers of iron and steel products have watched with great interest the development of streamlined trains, faster and safer airplanes, the entirely new science of air-conditioning and the widespread use of stainless steels. Since 1930, we have witnessed the erection of the world's largest suspension bridge, the largest and fastest ocean liner and the spectacular Boulder Dam, while even greater things are planned in these particular fields. Other industries, too, have been moving ahead rapidly. This advance in a few years has been caused primarily by the fierce competition of the depression. Now, more than ever, is the emphasis placed upon quality and service. Makers of southern merchant pig iron have been no exception and have been confronted with increasingly strict chemical specifications and with much greater stress on physical characteristics than ever before. For example, sulfur in the iron must be held very low, competition demanding that it be in the 0.020's and low 0.030's; silicon content must be held within a very narrow range, and definite requirements of phosphorus and manganese are an essential part of the specifications. Physical characteristics are becoming of increasingly greater importance. The introduction of triple-skimmed, slow-cooled iron several years ago was the first step in this direction. Now there are a few customers who buy iron by chemical analysis and physical appearance, having found that the analysis alone is an insufficient guide to their requirements. In addition to questions of quality, the subject of cost has greatly altered the southern furnaceman's viewpoint on many things. In the western United States occurs deposits of low-grade chromite which, when concentrated, may be reduced to ferrochromiun in electric furnaces that derive energy from dams and hydro plants now in course of construction. Montana ore was chosen for the experiments. A 1-ton sample contained 26 percent Cr203, 17 percent Fed, and 17 percent SiO2, plus other constituents, and the concentrates therefrom assayed 44 -percent Cr203, 23 percent FeO, and 0,79 per cent SiO2, Gravity concentration was found to be the best method. Ferrochromiums are of two grades - high-carbon with 66 to 70 percent chromium and 4-112 to 6 percent carbon and low-carbor with 67 to 72 percent chromium and 0.6 to 2 percent carbon. Both are made in electric furnaces that use anthracite as a reducer and suit-able fluxes. The concentrates mentioned mere smelted under different conditions, and it was concluded that domestic ore could be reduced with anthracite to produce a ferrochromium of S to 10 percent carbon content at yields of 90 percent without re-treating the slag. This carbon may be lowered to required proportion with calcium and silicon, but the former requires a great excess and the latter leaves an alloy high in silicon. INTRODUCTION Chromite occurs in several regions of the United States, but the known deposits of this mineral have not been large enough or high grade enough to permit them to compete under normal conditions with imported ores. There are numerous deposits of chrome ore along the West coast. These are generally conceded to be relatively small, although some were worked during the World War. There are some indications of a revival of interest in California chromites. Montana contains large chromite deposits in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties. The utilization of chromite for ferrochromium and. the manufacture of stainless steels is distinctly an electrometallurgical problem; consequently, a study of methods for treatment of chromite might pave the way for the establishment of new electrometallurgical industries in the Western States. This thought is supported by the cheap power that is soon to become available from the western dams, Farther, submarginal domestic chrome deposits might thus be turned into profitable producers.

This paper contained a forecast by decades, commencing 1920, of Canadian coal production, importation, consumption, and exports, based on anticipated rate of population increase, and continuation of the gradual increase in the per capita rate of coal consumption in Canada that had taken place every year up to 1920. The property of the Park City Consolidated Mines Co. is situated in the northeast part of the Park City dining district 1 mile east of the town of Park City. The elevation at the collar of No. 1 shaft is 7,250 feet. Park City is a town of approximately 4,500 population lying about 30 miles east of Salt Lake City. The two are connected by an oiled State Highway, which is cleared of snow in winter and maintained in first-class con¬dition by the State throughout the year. The district is served by branches of the Denver & Rio Grande Western and Union Pacific Railroads, each operating on a daily' schedule, except Sunday. These two railroads have constructed 1 ½ miles of joint track from the town to the Park City Consolidated Mines Co. loading tipple, located 200 feet from the portal of the adit that leads to No. 1 shaft.

In response to numerous requests for information as to the status of internal-combustion mine locomotives of the Diesel type that use heavy or non- volatile oil for fuel, with special reference to their safe use in coal mines, the United States Bureau of Mines is issuing this report. Data mere obtained, on application of such locomotives to cod mining only in Belgium, France, Germany, and Great Britain. The locomotives are used in coal mining in other countries, as well as in potash, iron, and other kinds of mining, but their chief development has been in coal mining in Germany, France, and Belgium. Recently popular interest in the Diesel type of engine for motive purposes was aroused in this country by the successful application of Diesel engines to railroad locomotives hauling fast transcontinental trains, and, according to published statements, at a low cost of fuel per mile of run.

During the summer of 1935 a plan was proposed by which the Government should establish custom sampling plants for gold and silver ores in the mining districts of the West, where the construction of such plants would be justified as an unemployment relief measure. It was known that in many districts prospectors and small operators had small lots of smelting ore that could not be marketed for lack of sufficient capital to get out enough ore at a time to make carload shipments to distant smelters. Moreover, considerable ore of milling grade was available in many districts in which there were no custom milling facilities. It was felt that. accurate sampling and the classification and consolidation of small lots of ore produced from prospects and small mines, with quick cash returns to the shippers on a nonprofit basis, would stimulate the working of small gold and silver properties: Idle mines would be put to work, and there was a possibility that some of the prospects could be developed into regularly producing mines. Each sampling plant was to be centrally located so as to serve the greatest possible number of mines and prospects. Wherever possible, the plants were to be built on a railroad, is ore of smelting grade accumulated, it was to be shipped to a smelter in carload lots. Where a plant was not on a railroad, smelting ore was to be trucked to the railroad after being sampled.

This paper purposes to outline briefly results of seismic measurements made in the vicinity of blasts in a mine and in open-quarry operations. It endeavors to examine the amplitude and frequency of such vibrations as influenced by the loading, geology, and distance from the source and includes comments on factors that may index the destructiveness of a vibration and a method for measuring the stresses produced. There seems to be no simple mathematical analysis of the transmission of seismic energy through the ground, and experimental observations are at present most feasible. SEISMOLOGIC INSTRUMENTS Instruments developed by the Bureau of Mines for recording ground vibrations from quarry blasting comprise a new type of seismometer, oscillators, and a recording oscillograph. The seismometers respond to vibrations reaching them through the earth and transmit their characteristics by electric current to the oscillograph, where they are recorded by a beam of light on a moving strip of sensitized photographic paper. The seismometers are so constructed that their sensitivity to earth vibration can be controlled, thus keeping the amplitude of the recorded wave within bounds on the paper. Each instrument has been calibrated against vibrations of known intensity and frequency so that correction factors are known for the idiosyncracies of each unit. Moreover, each seismometer is calibrated in the field for its particular sensitivity setting at each blast. By these controls the actual movement of the earth due to vibrations of one ten-thousandth of an inch can be accurately measured.

The manufacture of lime is one of the oldest industries. Plants are distributed widely and furnish an essential raw material for numerous industries. The use of lime by the building trades, in agriculture, and in hundreds of manufacturing and chemical processes has created demands for a large production and has necessitated exhaustive research on methods of manufacture and uses. The bibliography of lime is an extensive one, but for the most part each publication has dealt with only certain operations. The purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the industry as a whole. The abundant literature has been abstracted and quoted freely, and the National Lime Association has rendered valuable assistance in furnishing data for certain sections. Publications containing more detailed information on the various branches of the industry are referred to in the footnotes and in the bibliography.

AN extensive program of investigation is being carried out at Lehigh University in the study of arcs and arc welds of high-purity iron1, spon-sored by the Engineering Foundation. The part of that program reported in the present paper deals with welds made of high-purity iron in an argon atmosphere and for comparison with them welds made of the same iron in ordinary air. Welds of commercial steel also were made in argon and in air. The primary purpose of the study is to discover the basic physical constants of iron welds when not contaminated either by impurities in the iron or by the action of oxygen and nitrogen of the air during welding. Upon these constants can be founded such future studies as will determine what effects the various impurities and alloy elements present in steel have upon its welding characteristics, and what influence is exerted by the action of oxygen and nitrogen. The welding of steel involves such a multitude of variables, both of composition and of procedure, that development in the fabrication of this most important metal has necessarily been slow, wasteful, and in many instances discouraging. In the present investigation, the simplest possible condition has been selected; namely, iron practically free from contamination and a nonparticipating atmosphere, the inert gas argon. This simplification reduces the number of variables to a point where more rigid control of the system is possible. Although this study is significant for the contributions it makes to the science of steel fabrication, yet it is hoped that it will not be without value also in increasing knowledge of the nature and behavior of iron and steel in general. THE purpose of this paper is to point out, briefly, the importance of the coal mining industry of Alberta and to stress the economic factors that hinder its development; also to offer suggestions relating to the major problems of the industry. The minor problems will not be dealt with in detail, because, if the major problems are taken care of, it is felt that the industry itself can take care of ,he remainder. COAL MINING NO LESS IMPORTANT THAN GOLO MINING The large increase in metal mining development in all provinces of Canada, excepting Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the Maritimes, has had the effect of focussing public attention on this branch of the industry. The fact, also, that this development came at a time of depression has been of immense benefit to Canada as a whole. On account of the necessity and consequent demand for gold, with its attendant increase in price, through government action, from $20.67 per ounce to $35.00 per ounce, it is safe to say that the public of Canada have become, today, gold mining conscious. While everyone admits the great value. of the gold mrn111g industry, nevertheless, the equal value to Canada of certain other industries must not be lost sight of. The coal mining industry, in particular, is worthy of greater public and government support than has been accorded it in the past. It would seem unnecessary to stress this matter to a meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, but unless certain facts are brought to your attention, there is danger that the coal mining industry will not be developed to the extent its national importance deserves. Too many public men and men in authority are unaware of the value of coal mining.
