MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations, and dynamic transient state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters, external influences such as temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output enables detailed quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system Network simulation using digital computers has become widespread throughout the mining industry in recent years. However, as the sophistication of the simulator increases (MFIRE, for example), the complexity of input data requirements and interpretations of results requires more skill and knowledge from the users. Perhaps the most difficult part of using MFIRE is to construct the data set describing the mine's physical layout and its ventilation properties. The initial attempts to get the data set running often reveal unknown or ignored aspects of the mine's ventilation. MFIRE was written in Fortran 77 and compiled with Microway1 Fortran for the Intel 80386 based computers with a 80387 math co-processor. The source code is portable and available for users who wish to modify the source code to operate on other computers. This user manual describes the development of MFIRE, the input format and requirements, the output, common errors, fire parameters, and examples MFIRE application. Valuable reference material is included in the appendices. Knowledgeable users may skip directly to the PROGRAM INSTALLATION AND OPERATION section to begin using MFIRE immediately.

It is now five years since the advent of gold-dredging in Australia, the State of New South 'Wales, or colony as it was, being the first to adopt this system of gold-getting, and the credit of its introduction rests with a member of this Institute, Mr. Chas. L. Garland, who commenced operations with his dredge on the Macquarie River, at the junction of the Muckerawa Creek, in the month of March, 1899. In this paper it is intended to give a brief history of the career of the gold dredge in New South Wales from that relate up to the present time, during which period the writer, as a designer of many dredges, has been constantly in touch with the subject in all its phases in this State; the points noted are the outcome of his observation in a general way, and to a great extent are apart from the design proper.Gold-dredging in New South Wales up to the present moment can hardly be designated an unqualified success...

The Late Miocene gold-silver bearing epithermal system at Waihi has some close similarities in its paleo-thermal and geochemical structure with modern, volcanic-hosted geothermal systems such as Ohaaki-Broadlands. At Waihi an extensive braided quartz vein system is enveloped by hydrothermally altered andesites with minor tuff breccias and tuffs. A main stage of vein filling consists of multiple phases of chalcedonic quartz and fine to medium grained quartz, which are accompanied by pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and acanthite below the base of oxidation. Platy calcite is present locally. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the main stage quartz was deposited at temperatures of 189¦-273¦C from dilute (Tm of -0.1 to -1.0¦C) fluids that were locally boiling. Homogenisation temperature Th versus Tm data points lie within the field enveloped by dilution and boiling/gas loss paths determined for the Ohaaki geothermal field, and indicates that the parent hydrothermal fluid for the Waihi epithermal system had a similar composition to that at Ohaaki, ie 0.2 wt% equiv NaCl and 3.3 wt% equiv CO2. The hydrothermal alteration mineralogy and the isotopic composition of vein calcite indicate that the hydrothermal fluid contained relatively high concentrations of CO2 , as at Ohaaki. Oxygen isotope analyses of main stage quartz range from 6.1 to 11.6 %0 and of vein calcite from 2.29 to 9.4%0. Calculated d18Owater values for the hydrothermal fluid that deposited the main stage quartz range from 2.0 to -5.7%0, with a trend to less negative values with depth. They are similar to those in the deep chloride fluid in active geothermal systems with a substantial fluid throughput. A high fluid throughput at Waihi system is also evident from the extensive high intensity hydrothermal alteration and large volume of quartz deposited in the vein system.

"An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick Mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits. The mill liners consist of steel top hat shell liners, steel end liners, rubber grates and rubber lined pulp lifters.Lifter profile and plate thickness measurements were made on monthly shop days. Trends of wear rates were used to project when liners required replacement. Wear profile information was also used to determine where liner re-design would improve wear life or minimize scrap loss. Charge motion simulation modeling was used as a tool to assist liner design modifications.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is a large underground lead/zinc mine with a nominal production rate of 10,000 tonnes per day. The Brunswick concentrator commenced operation in 1964 with conventional surface crushing followed by rod and ball milling to reduce run of mine ore to the required size to feed two parallel flotation circuits. In 1998 the AG (autogenous grinding) mill was commissioned for a nominal production rate of 9,000 tonnes per day replacing two surface crushing plants, three rod mills and three primary ball mills. In May of 1999 the mining rate was increased and the service of the AG mill was changed to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill with the addition of 4 inch steel balls (4% volume). The mill operates in closed circuit with 0.66 meter horizontal cyclones to produce a ground product of 90 micron nominal size (K80).The AG/SAG mill liners are steel (Norsteel, chrome-moly steel) with rubber grates and rubber lined pulp lifters.The original liner design was based on studying other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Design factors taken into account were total cost of lining (including material and labour), protection of mill shell and impact on operating performance."

Judicious placement of a range of geotechnical instruments was employed at the Tasmania gold mine, Beaconsfield, Tasmania, as a key strategy in the monitoring of rock mass conditions over the past four years. The range of instruments employed included vibrating wire stress-meters and hollow inclusion cells to monitor changing stress conditions, resistance wire and multipoint borehole extensometers to monitor the impact of stress changes on the integrity of the rock mass, and instrumented cable bolts and threadbar bolts to monitor the static and dynamic impact of rock mass changes on the installed ground control system. Initially the monitoring was of a qualitative nature, monitoring change from the time of installation. The value of the output was considerable when considered in relation to the ongoing seismic record which was also being monitored. It was clear from the seismic record and the monitoring results that stope blasting was the primary trigger for changing rock mass conditions. However, it was unclear how well observed behaviour was reflecting conditions anticipated by elastic numerical modelling. The latter had predicted significant stress increase in the near field of man-access footwall development. Qualitative monitoring and visual inspection did not support the modelling prediction, and this led to a program of quantitative measurement being undertaken. Measurement of the absolute stress condition in the backs of footwall development immediately adjacent to monitoring hollow inclusion cells provided the benchmark for tracking quantitative stress change. The program provided insight into the evolution of principal stress field magnitude and orientation in relation to rock mass change observed with extensometers and instrumented ground control elements, as well as providing a degree of calibration between the elastic numerical modelling and the virgin stress field. Calibrated monitoring data has also provided a useful benchmark for finite element modelling which is to be used for future mine-wide design.

The lining, together with the electrodes, forms the heart of the operation of a submerged arc furnace. Subsequent to a lining failure on M12 furnace during the early 1980s, Metalloys was active in investigating the concept of thermally efficient ?freeze? linings for its furnaces. The theory revolved around that, not only would, thermally efficient linings result in significant cost savings, but they would also last longer as a result of being subjected to less harsh operational conditions. After having proved the concept on the .smaller. furnaces, Metalloys decided to implement the concept on its largest submerged arc furnace, M12 Subsequent to having recovered from an impending failure of a lining installed in 1981 in M12 in the mid 1980s, Metalloys managed, through rigid lining management, to extend the life of this lining to 1999. At the end of 1999 the decision to replace the lining in the furnace with a ?freeze? lining was made and planning and design proceeded in earnest. This paper discusses the options considered in making the final decision. The features of the design of the lining are also discussed. Consideration is given to the furnace shell cooling system as a result of its importance in maintaining the thermal equilibrium in the lining. Note is made of the fact that the purchase of a .freeze. lining is an expensive exercise but that the time savings in the installation of the lining and the efficiency improvements during operation far outweigh the additional capital cost. The experience on M12 has been that the payback period of the marginal capital expenditure is less than three years. As a result of the opportunity to reline a furnace the size of M12 not presenting itself very often, the learning points from the installation of the lining and the operational advantages and disadvantages are significant. Finally, the point is made that the project had its pros and cons but overall the success of the project has been evident and, as such, the ?freeze? lining is likely to become the norm at Metalloys.

The Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Pretoria accepts that the process of teaching and learning improvement is an ongoing exercise with the ultimate aim to deliver well-rounded mining engineering practitioners. Various challenges impact on the success of this process. An integrated and innovative process was developed and is followed in the Department to overcome these challenges. The aim of the Department is to apply a holistic teaching approach by introducing multiple integrated interventions with regards to teaching and learning strategies. Three phases of this process are discussed in this article, and are illustrated in Figure 1. During the first phase, prior to 1999, several teaching and learning challenges were identified in the Department of Mining Engineering. These challenges are discussed in the next section. In the current phase, a variety of interventions to address the challenges are being developed, implemented (in some cases piloted), and evaluated. The future phases will focus on the improvement, successes, and full roll-out of current interventions, as well as on training, development, and support for all staff members to participate in the process. Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35 °C (95 °F) (MSHA 2008 [1]). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by > 5.6 °C (10 °F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures (Bissert et al. 2017 [2]). In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35 °C (95 °F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy

The increasing demand for pure aluminum and aluminum compounds of industrial quality from kaolinite ore cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria is one of the African countries endowed with abundant solid mineral resources that have not been sufficiently exploited to assist its indigenous industries. A wide array of applications of pure aluminum and its compounds are available, such as paper filling, refractories, adsorbent, catalysis, and paint additives. In this study, the upgrading of a Nigerian biotite-rich kaolinite ore by a hydrometallurgical route was investigated in oxalic acid media. During leaching studies, the effects of parameters including reaction temperature, lixiviant concentration and particle size on the extent of ore dissolution were examined. At optimal conditions (1.0 mol/L C2H2O4, 75 °C), 92.0% of the initial 10 g/L ore was reacted within 120 min. The dissolution curves from the shrinking core model were analyzed and found to conform to the assumption of surface diffusion reaction, and the calculated activation energy of 33.2 kJ/mol supported the proposed model. The unreacted product (~8.0%) analyzed by XRD was found to contain siliceous impurities and could serve as a valuable by-product for certain industries.

It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its principal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctuations, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War II has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic information and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that production rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship. The rate of developing mercury reserves during the period from January 1944 to January 1962 is considered, and it is shown that if this rate can be continued, the mercury resources of the United States, at a constant dollar price of $500 per flask, are adequate to support a production of 60,000 flasks per year for 30 or more years. This publication contains a history and description of the mercury industry in every State which has had production and individual descriptions of all mercury properties which have reported significant production. Accompanying tables give the important facts about all known mercury occurrences.

This report analyzes electrical accident data in the metal/non-metal mining industry. Accidents are categorized to determine their root causes. Special attention is given to accidents associated with inadequate or defective grounding of mine power systems. Recommendations are made concerning proper grounding practice, especially for dredges and for quarries in hard rock or sand. The costs of instituting the recommended practices are estimated for model mine power systems which are based on field data obtained from 37 mines and several electrical contractors. The expected benefits of various suggested safety practices are also estimated.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 675 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 24 States and 5 foreign countries. The samples obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1980 are included in tables 1-4. Those samples included in tables 5-7 were collected during the years 1960 through 1979. However, permission to publish the analyses of those samples was not given until the past year when the operators were again contacted to seek release of the information. All of these samples were collected as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576. The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Twenty-two previous publications have presented the results of 12,152 gas analyses made prior to 1980. A leaching column technique that produces effluent similar in quality to coal mine drainage in the Eastern Interior Basin has been developed. The columns are charged with 1000 grams of crushed overburden and cycled through the leaching process once a week for twelve weeks. Inter-relationships among the important chemical constituents are very similar to those present in actual mine drainage waters, but the overall concentrations of ion are more dilute in the leachates. Multiplying the leachate concentrations by a factor of 4.5 gives values similar to mine waters. Available data suggests that each of the leaching cycles represents about three years of natural weathering, so that the leaching technique can predict the evolution of the mire drainage water over a time span of nearly 40 years. Use of the leaching technique with drill core samples should provide a method of approximating mine drainage quality in advance of mining and should be quite useful in identifying potentially toxic units in the overburden. However, the results should he considered to be a 'worst case' situation because the technique' does not consider the effects of reclamation.

This report presents theoretical studies and experimental work dealing with the detection of dangerous roof and pillar conditions in underground mines through measure¬ment of temperature differences on the surface of the mine opening. The theoretical work is directed at modeling the circumstances where a loose slab of rock might be detected. The experimental work provides input data for the theoretical models. At the beginning of the project, little was known by the authors of the conditions that would permit detection of a loose slab of rock or coal by measuring the surface temperature differences. The U.S. Bureau of Mines had found that there were detectable surface temperature differences on the roofs and pillars of mines. The Bureau contracted with Colorado School of Mines to measure temperature profiles around mine openings in an effort to learn if the temperature differences they had detected were directly related to loose pieces of roof and pillar rock. The Bureau was principally interested in learning if loose rock could be found in coal mines by measurement of surface temperature differences with an infrared thermometer.

As a consequence of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969(PL91-173), the Bureau of Mines (BOM) entered into a contract with Ocean Energy Inc. (OEI) to develop, fabricate, install, and evaluate a permissible lighting system for use on a longwall coal mining operation. The program schedule is shown in Figure 1.1. The proposed regulations are contained in Appendix A. The initial part of the program involved a survey of existing longwall lighting practices in Germany and England and an evaluation of a variety of lighting components on a mockup of a longwall mining operation that was fabricated under this program. Visits made to German and British mines uncovered major differences in lighting level requirements, permissibility aspects, size, and operating constraints which identified wide disparities and essentially eliminated from further consideration any known imported lighting devices for meeting the higher lighting levels and standards proposed for US coal mines by the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA). The longwall mockup provided use¬ful information regarding the amount of illumination required, physical size and shape of lamps, light distribution problems, cable routing, use of connectors, signaling, glare, and other important factors unique to the lighting of low coal longwalls.
