A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

The deposit has been exploited for Mn oxide and carbonate since 1916. Known reserves of MnO, however, are almost depleted and the survival of the mine will depend on the exploitation of the carbonate. Kriging, inverse distance weighting (IDW) and cross-sectional methods have been applied to the evaluation of the carbonate resources and reconciliation of the estimates obtained shows that kriging and IDW give almost identical block values. A comparison using conditional probability indicates that there is virtually no difference between the global reserve estimates derived from the cross-sectional and kriging methods. The physical causes of these similarities are highlighted and the problems of dealing with multimodal distributions are discussed together with the difficulties of semi-variogram modelling

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. Recently in Japan, unexpected degradation (surface subsidence) at old underground quarry sites, such as 'Ohya-Ishi' (pumice tuff) pit field has often been occurred. At these quarry sites, the excavation was started 20 or 30 years ago with mechanical chain cutter and the Room and Pillar method, and stopped 7 or more years ago. Therefore, a reliable method has been required for an estimation of long term mechanical properties of the rock and for an observation of a stability of rock-pillars or structures. In this study, creep tests under uniaxial compressive load were carried out on the 'Ohya-Ishi', with the aim of estimating the long term stability of the rock. From these results, a creep mechanism of the rock was discussed using the failure mechanism hypothesis proposed by Bieniawski and by others. On this basis, critical time to failure was predicted by the relationship between the logarithm of life time and stress ratio of the sustained axial creep load. Additionally, outline of the monitoring system of AE/MS activity in the field, which have set by the Ohya Aria Consolidate Public Corporation and the others to predict or to prevent the degradation of those residual pillars, is to be reported. The majority of fatalities that occur in road construction work zones in the United States involve a worker being struck by a piece of construction equipment or other vehicle. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Transportation, is evaluating methods to decrease these accidents. One such method uses devices that assist equipment operators in monitoring blind areas around the equipment to prevent collisions with workers on foot or other objects. Several cameras and sensor systems are available for this application, and a study was conducted to evaluate these systems on various trucks used in road construction and maintenance. Tests were conducted using sanding trucks during the winter months, which allowed researchers to investigate the effectiveness and limitations of various technologies under the most extreme conditions. Tests were also conducted using dump trucks during the warmer months to study the effectiveness of the systems in highway work zones. Results show that many difficulties arise when using camera and sensor systems in cold, snowy climates. And, while the operation of these systems is more reliable during the warmer months, challenges still exist in using them on equipment in crowded work areas.

Bi was electrorefined from alloys containing 10-90 wt% Pb, together with Cu and Ag as minor impurities, in a basic cell and in a recessed-channel cell with 27.5:72.5 NaCl-PbCl electrolyte at 450-470 degrees C and 10 000-20 000 A/m2. The voltage in the basic cell was as high as 9 V, with some carryover of Bi to the cathode observed, whereas in the recessed-channel cell it was as low as 285-635 mV. Flow patterns observed in a room-temperature model indicated that the recesses provide both static liquid hold-up and good mixing of the alloy, enhancing cell performance in combination with the reduced anode-cathode distance of 0.90 mm. The purity of the resulting anode product is as high as 99.9%

A novel, microaerobic, heterotrophic microbial leaching system for manganese dioxide is described. Mixed natural microflora were enriched by addition of sugars and crude plant nutrItIOnal supplements. Between 84 and 104 mg MnH was solubilized per gram sugar at I per cent (w/v) concentrations for fructose and galactose in the presence of 0.03 per cent w/v dried microalgae (a Chlamydomonas species). Some 42 per cent soluble manganese was dissolved by microbial action on MnO, (3 per cent (w/v) pulp density) using a 10 per cent (w/v) molasses growth substrate.

The Block 37 Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Tunnel Construction Project was originally designed by STV to connect Blue Line subway in North Dearborn Street and Red Line subway in State Street in the downtown Chicago Area. The project was proposed using tunnel mining techniques combined with steel pipe jacking and fiber glass rebar soil reinforcement. Weidlinger Associates, Inc. (WAI) and Kiewit Construction Company proposed an alternate design using open cut construction technology. WAI designed a complex temporary excavation support system using Soldier Pile Tremie Concrete (SPTC) walls and Soldier Pile Lagging walls supported by cross lot/corner bracing elements. Below the top of the existing tunnel, a top-down construction technique was utilized. A steel temporary traffic decking system at top of the excavation site served as the daily street traffic function as well as the first level of bracing for the support of excavation. The project encountered great challenges of soft clay conditions in downtown Chicago, numerous existing utilities in the excavation site and the requirements of protection for a number of historical buildings nearby as well as the protection of the city streets. The construction was successfully completed at both State Street/Washington Street and Dearborn Street/Randolph Street. The monitoring system showed that ground movement and adjacent building settlement was kept to a minimum during construction.

"Recovery of mineralized coarse particles is notoriously low in conventional concentrators that treat copper porphyry ores. The application of coarse particle flotation techniques has the potential to achieve comparable metallurgical performance at significantly coarser primary grind sizings. ALS Metallurgy has been conducting both internal research and commercial test programs to investigate the potential of Eriez HydroFloatTM technology on copper sulphide ores. Test data indicates that significant improvements in the recovery of copper sulphide bearing particles between 200µm to 850µm can be achieved using Hydrofloat technology compared to conventional flotation techniques. This paper summarizes the results from a selection of test programs that includes recovery by size data from both conventional flotation and HydroFloatTM tests. An explanation of the apparatus and test procedure will be given. Mineralogical analyses of the test products and characteristics that limit metallurgical performance will be discussed.Description of Apparatus and Test ProtocolThe HydroFloatTM laboratory cell is a clear plastic column with an internal diameter of 14 cm. Water and air are introduced to the cell through a circular manifold located in the lower portion of the cell. The cell has a conical bottom which directs slurry to a pinch valve that controls the discharge of tailings. Feed solids are introduced to the upper portion of the cell in slurry form. The cell is operated in a manner such that the manifold water creates a teeter bed zone of suspended solids in the middle portion of the cell. Tailings exit the bottom of the cell at a high pulp density, and most of the introduced water overflows the top of the column and is collected in a launder. Particles with a hydrophobic surface may attach to air bubbles that percolate through the teeter bed, rendering them sufficiently buoyant to be transported to the overflow launder.Three significant features of this arrangement enhance the potential to recover coarse, low grade particles by flotation techniques. Firstly, the hindered settling conditions created by the rising column of water allow coarse particles to become buoyant once attached to a modest sized air bubble. Secondly, the flow conditions within the cell are relatively quiescent compared to a conventional flotation cell that utilizes an agitator. This allows particles that have limited hydrophobic portions of their surface, due to a low content of exposed sulphide mineral, to maintain a somewhat fragile attachment to air bubbles long enough for successful recovery to the overflow. Finally, the absence of a froth phase at the top of the cell allows particles attached to air bubbles to immediately exit the vessel, reducing the potential to drop back into the pulp phase as bubbles burst or coalesce."

Power Plant. The power for the metallurgical operations is supplied by the company's own power plant, which is centrally situated. Power is also supplied to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd., both being adjacently situated to this company'sworks.The power supplied is direct current, 250 volts, and is obtained from direct-current generators coupled to turbines and to Belliss & Morcom triple expansion engines.The steam supply is obtained from Babcock & Wilcox water tubular boilers, the fuel used being drawn from the South Coast coal mines.Transport. - The works are connected by standard broad gauge railway to both the jetties and the Government railway. Two steam and three electric locomotives are employed in this service.In addition to its own requirements, transport is provided to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd.The various operating departments are connected by a 2-ft. gauge railway operated by Jeffrey electric locomotives.Ore Storage and Sample Mill - These departments are connected by broad gauge line to the Government railway and jetties. All material which is railed or shipped to the works from the various centres is weighed, sampled and placed in the ore store, or outside gantries, before being treated.Since the whole of the material received is either purchased or treated on a toll charge, great care is necessary in the weighing and sampling of all the receipts.Assay Oflice--The assay office is divided into several laboratories, where analyses of the various purchased materials and works samples are carried out.

Geophysical anomalies result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through rocks. Interpretation of these anomalies, when integrated with available geological and geochemical data, assists the construction of a conceptual model of the original hydrology of the system. The original extent of a geothermal system is often indicated by the distribution of low resistivity argillic clay alteration. Quartz-adularia vein deposits, silica sinters or stockwork (often mineralised) cause local increases in resistivity. Appropriately chosen electrical techniques can therefore be used to help target such structures. Airborne magnetic surveys have also proven useful in New Zealand epithermal exploration, because hydrothermal fluids destroy magnetite causing extensive demagnetisation anomalies. Ground magnetic surveys can sometimes be useful for geological interpretation on a local scale. Positive gravity anomalies may occur as a result of mineral precipitation (silica or calcite) in high porosity host rocks, while negative gravity anomalies can result from hydrothermal fracturing and leaching of relatively dense host rocks. The relative merits of these geophysical techniques as used in the exploration of epithermal mineral prospects are discussed, with particular reference to the Hauraki Goldfield. The preferred method for defining zones of quartz veining/silicification is vector or tensor gradient resistivity. Exploration strategies and technique refinements are suggested as a means of improving the resolution of potentially mineralised target structures, in a more efficient and cost effective manner.

The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. Interest in those physical properties of minerals which might be used to good effect in prospecting is not new. Early in the nineteenth century attempts were made in th'e Cornish mines to measure the natural electric potentials set up by chemical changes proceeding in the lodes. The distortion of the earth's magnetic field by bodies of strongly magnetic iron ore received early recognition in Sweden. Treasure-finders, working on the principle of electrical induction, appear to have been invented about eighty years ago, though were probably not then applied to mineral exploration. By the end of the nineteenth century Eotvos, a Hungarian physicist, had constructed a highly sensitive type of torsion balance capable of measuring the minute distortions in the earth's field of gravitation resulting from variations in the density of the materials composing the crust. During the first decade of this century he demonstrated its value in tracing rock-salt deposits in virtue of their low density compared with the surrounding rocks. Geophysical prospecting began to be recognised as having a very definite value and its development gathered momentum. Its great expansion took place after the 1914-18 war, when its value in oil exploration was amply demonstrated, and this expansion has continued to the present time and shows no signs of abating.Divisions of Applied Geophysics.The four main divisions of applied geophysics are electrical, magnetic gravitational and seismic. With the importance of ores of radio-active metals, one might add to these a radio-active division. The first two are more important to the field of mining, but techniques based on gravitational attraction have their uses in particular cases. Seismic methods are not generally suited to the exploration of metallic ores, but have proved of enormous value in the search for petroleum. With vast quantities of oil as the prize, more money has been lavished on the deve10pment and practice of these methods than on all the others put together.Geophysical Prospecting Methods.Geophysical prospecting methods may be used to detect a mineral deposit directly in virtue of differences in the intensity of some physical attribute common to it and the enclosing country rock. Examples of this are the detection of rock-salt by gravity measurements, or of iron ore by magnetic methods. Of much wider application, however, is the indireot approach in which the aim is to determine, by geophysical means, the geological structures controlling the disposition of mineral deposits. These structures may be partly known from geological work, in which case geophysical methods are useful adjuncts. Where, because of an 'unbroken cover of overburden, no useful geological information presents itself, scout drilling or geophysical prospecting are the only alternatives. Overburden is here intended to mean any covering material not, involved in the structures controlling the mineral deposits. Prospecting for petroleum amounts to the detecting of favourable reservoir structures, and as the chief types of such are the same the world over...

The ability to precondition (weaken) a rock mass to enhance caving (cavability and fragmentation) is becoming increasingly important, as more potential caving deposits are in stronger rock masses, and at greater depth. This paper discusses a full-scale blast preconditioning experiment conducted at the Cadia East mining operation, including quantification of visible and microscale blast damage. From a cave mining perspective, the objectives of the experiment were to quantify the effect of confined blasting on rock mass characteristics relevant to enhanced caving, and to provide calibration data for the purpose of numerically modelling alternative blast preconditioning designs.The experiment was located approximately 360 m below surface, and consisted of two f165 mm blastholes (60 m vertical holes) and eight HQ diamond drill monitoring holes (35 m horizontal holes). The diamond drill holes were used to sample the rock mass before and after the blast at varying distances from the blastholes. Rock mass blast damage was quantified both visually using core logging, and on a microscale using LABYRINTH® statistical analysis of X-ray microtomography data. Results from the experiment indicated four major findings:on the visible scale, the experiment indicated a 147 per cent increase in the number of hairline cracks within 5 m (p value = 0.015), but no change in geotechnical logging parametersmicroscale tomography of intact rock samples indicate significant localised intact rock damage up to 4 m from the blasthole (p = 0.007)preliminary point load test results indicate that blast damage results in a significant reduction in intact rock strength (p = 0.050)the significant increase in porosity and microfracture size associated with damage provides a mechanism for reduced intact rock strength due to confined blasting.CITATION:Stewart, P C, Brunton, I, Francis, D and Chitombo, G, 2016.
