The Elura Orebody consists of a number of parallel, vertically oriented pipe-like structures of pyrite-sphalerite-galena mineralization located at the core of a structural dome. Concentric zoning of the mineralization into an outer Siliceous, intermediate Pyritic and inner Pyrrhotitic Zone has been previously recognized and is used in routine geologic modelling of the lead, zinc and silver grades.Statistical analysis of the metal grade distribution in the orebody has confirmed the importance of the mineralogical zones in the understanding of grade trends. The gradational nature of intra-zone boundaries, especially those related to the subjective definition of the Siliceous Zone, are apparent in the statistics.

Goodenough and Fergusson Islands, in eastern PapuaNew Guinea, lie in an area of crustal extension on the western end of the Woodlark Basin seafloor spreading system. The islands are made up of a number of mountainous domes of complexely deformed basement, and these are intruded by large bodies of granodiorite. The domes are bounded by curved shear zones and faults dipping outwards at angles of around 25 to 45¦. The cores of the domes contain lower crustal rocks of eclogite and granulite facies, these rocks have undergone retrograde metamorphism in the outer sheared zones. Movement indicators on the shear zones indicate a complex moverm.-It geometry which does not fit the models proposed by earlier workers. These dome-like structures are similar to the metamorphic core complexes of the western United States Cordilleran region, however there are a number of aspects which do not fit with the models proposed for the development of metamorphic core complexes. Uplift of the metamorphic basement probably resulted from a combination of forces associated with the extension of the crust and the intrusion and emplacement of granodiorite plutons.

"This paper revisits data from previous studies (Hernandez-Aguilar, 2010, 2011) to better understand the link between metallurgical performance and bubble size (Db) in the collection (pulp) zone of full-scale flotation systems. To obtain conclusive evidence exclusively related to the collection zone, the experiments were designed in those studies to control both the bubble generation method and the influence of the froth zone on the overall metallurgical performance in industrial and pilot-scale flotation columns. The results showed that generating small (1 mm) bubbles had a significantly higher beneficial effect on the recovery of coarse (> 75 µm) particles compared to the effect on fine (< 16 µm) particles. It was observed that, under certain practical conditions, the recovery of liberated coarse particles was close to zero, but could be recovered almost completely by reducing bubble size. The evidence revealed an apparent inconsistency of the so-called “k–PSb” model: at constant froth recovery, increasing Sb did not always result in higher recovery, as the model predicts. Overall, the evidence showed that it was not the Sb but the bubble size that proved to be a more reliable link to metallurgical performance. Only under highly suboptimal bubble size conditions (Db = 3 mm) did the froth zone seem to play a role, possibly reflecting an effect of pulp-zone bubble size on froth stability. However, for the most part, both the bubble generation method and the froth zone played inconsequential roles. An empirical model that better describes the kinetics of particle collection is proposed.INTRODUCTIONStudies showing the link between metallurgical performance and the interactions of bubbles and particles in the collection (pulp) zone of industrial flotation systems are scarce. A common belief among a number of mineral processing practitioners considers that “small” bubbles are favourable to recover “small” particles and that, conversely, “larger” bubbles are more efficient at floating “coarse” particles. However, perceptions like this are often substantiated by anecdotal evidence rather than by rigorous data analysis. What is the optimum bubble size for a particular case, how operating conditions can be adjusted to control a target bubble size, and whether the bubble size needs to be changed in the first place to optimize the operation of a flotation plant are questions that usually remain without solid answers.The studies reported by Hernandez-Aguilar (2010, 2011) were, in part, performed to test the effect of bubble size on flotation response and, thus, help address some of the above questions. The focus of the studies was to optimize the metallurgical grade-recovery performance of the Cu-Mo separation plant at Teck’s Highland Valley Copper mine (HVC). The outcome was compelling and significantly valuable: consolidated production data showed that in 2008 – the year when the recommendations from the studies started to be implemented – the Mo plant recovery was 89%, and gradually increased to 92% and 94% in 2009 and 2010, respectively, along with an increase in Mo concentrate grade. (Note: these production figures were not included in the publications quoted above; however, they were shown during an oral presentation at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors in 2011.)"

THE John Fritz Medal Board of Award, at its regu¬lar annual meeting Oct. 19, awarded its gold medal to Herbert Clark Hoover. Thus ended a process of selection begun a few years ago. The award was tentatively made a year ago by the Board, which is composed of sixteen recent past-presidents of the four national societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers, having together a membership of nearly 60,000. The morphology and crystallography of marten -site formed during quenclzing were examined by transmission electron microscopy in alloys whose compositions lie between Fe-19 wt pct Cr-11 wt pet Ni and Fe-33 wt pet Ni. Depending upon composition, four types of transformation products were observed in this portion of the Fe-Cr-Ni system. Three of these products are denoted as lath, plate, and surface martensite. The hcp structure found in association with martensite it? certain higlz-clzromium stairzless steels does not influence the transformation crystallogyaphy and cannot he Considered to act as a transitional structure in the transformation from austenite to martensite. DISTINCT changes in the characteristics of mar-tensitic transformations are produced by the partial replacement of nickel by chromium in austenitic iron alloys. Large, discrete martensite plates form in Fe-30 pct Ni, while aggregates of small crystals form in sheets parallel with (111)A austenite planes in stainless steels containing in the vicinity of 18 pct Cr and 8 pct Ni. These transformation structures are termed plate and lath martensite, respectively. In addition, an hcp structure (E) has been observed in certain high-chromium stainless steels in association with martensite. It has been suggested that the E structure acts as an intermediate step in the nucleation of martensitel-&apos; and influences the morphology and crystallography of the final transformation product. However, this structure may be the consequence of the deformation of austenite arising from the shape distortion accompanying the transformation to bcc martensite.&apos; An hcp stacking of atoms is produced in an fcc lattice by the introduction of an intrinsic stacking fault on alternate (111)A planes. At present, the arguments behind each explanation for the E structure are based on circumstantial evidence. This investigation seeks to determine the importance of the hcp structure to the martensitic transformation, and to examine the crystallography and morphology of the structures produced in bulk samples by quenching in alloys whose compositions lie between Fe-19 wt pct Cr-11 wt pct Ni and Fe-33 wt pct Ni. These aspects of the martensitic transformations occurring in these alloys have been studied by electron metallography and selected-area diffraction of foils examined in transmission in the electron microscope. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The alloys have been prepared from thoroughly mixed powders of pure iron (99.6+ pct, 0.06 max pct C, 0.15 max pct N), chromium (99.9+ pct), and nickel (99.9+ pct). After sintering in an Ar-H2 atmosphere, the mixtures were melted by induction heating in recrystallized alumina boats under purified argon. The ingots were cold-rolled to 0.4-mm sheets (100 pct reduction in thickness) after the removal of at least 1.5 mm from their surfaces by grinding. Three-millimeter discs were punched from the cold-rolled sheet and annealed at 1150°C for approximately 24 hr in evacuated quartz capsules. The average grain size was 40 µ Thin foils for examination in transmission in the electron microscope were prepared from discs quenched to liquid-nitrogen temperature. A depression was first jet-machined into the center of a disc and a thin area (less than approximately 3000A in thickness) was produced at the base of the depression by electropolishing. Earlier work1-4 has shown that commercial mild steels under static loading at the lowest natural operating temperatures fracture in a brittle manner only when damaged by a suitable history of straining. Notched and then compressed plates have fractured in subsequent tension at loads as low as 10 pct of the limit load and precompressed smooth bars at a subsequent extensional strain as low as 0.01. The comparison of the average net fracture stress with the flow limit stress was shown to be an excellent criterion of brittle or ductile behavior of mild steel structures when only loads and general stress levels are known. The present investigation shows that the deformation at fracture is a far more sensitive measure of brittleness than the fracture stress. Both criteria, deformation and stress, are used to determine the amount of uniform precompression of two mild steels, ABS-B and Project E-steel, resulting in brittle fracture under the strong constraint of a subsequently machined severe circumferential groove. The fracture stress equaled or exceeded the theoretical flow limit Ól = 2.680., (&apos;based on the elevated yield stress at each prestrain) up to prestrains of about 0.20 and then fell off to about 1 at prestrains of 0.60. Yet a prestrain of only 0.05 reduced the elongation at the shoulders by a factor of about 4. The total plastic elongation of a region surrounding a sharp notch in prestrained steel deternines whether or not fracture will be initiated in large structures, hence is a direct and realistic measure of the remaining ductility and provides an excellent test of the material&apos;s resistance to embrittlement. ALMOST all engineering structures of mild steel which failed in service in a so-called "brittle" manner exhibited appreciable local plastic deformation (more than 1 pct) and a mixture of "cleavage" and "shear" fracture surfaces. Furthermore, the peak local stress in an advancing crack is always high. Such simple criteria as pure cleavage, absence of plasticity, or fracture stress, so useful in other fields, are insufficient to characterize brittleness in engineering structures at ordnary temperatures. The "brittle)&apos; behavior of engineering structures is caused by the limited ductility at cracks or notch regions, as shown by recent work at Brown University summarized and extended in Refs. 1 to 4. It was also shown that the local ductility of mild steel may be catastrophically reduced by a suitable strain and temperature history similar to those which may occur in real structures. Localized yielding begins at the notch roots at low loads but is contained by surrounding elastic regions. The plastic strains are hence small. They increase slowly with the load up to the flow limit or limit load for an ideally plastic material. Unrestricted plastic flow then occurs. At such strains the real material locally st rain-hardens and fractures. With work-hardening materials no flow limit exists, and the transition from low to high plastic strains is gradual but increases more rapidly at loads close to the flow limit of an equivalent perfectly plastic material. When the available ductility is sufficient for reaching the limit load, the behavior is normal or "ductile". With insufficient ductility, fracture will occur at a low load and will be defined as "brittle". Accordingly the sufficiency or not of the ductility at a notch is reflected in the magnitude of the fracture load or average net stress as compared with the limit load or flow limit. The application of this criterion gave surprising results. Service failures under semistatic loading occurred mostly below the limit load, hence were "brittle". On the contrary all static tests with undamaged commercial mild steels reached the limit load in spite of the deepest notches and temperatures below Charpy impact transition (say about -30°F or higher). Notched bars showed no brittleness even under fully dynamic axial loading up to 1.5 x107 psi per sec at -23°F and about 2.5 x l06 psi per sec at -ll0°F, but broke in a brittle manner at -200°F and l03 psi per sec.&apos; To propagate a fracture at low load, experimenters had to trigger it by superimposing a strong dynamic impact at a notch cooled by liquid nitrogen as in the Robertson5 or Esso tests.&apos; Once started the cracks would run through warmer regions of smaller stress. Obviously the ductility of the apparently undamaged commercial steels was "sufficient" in the laboratory tests but not in the service fracture, where it must have been reduced by some embrittling procedure of fabrication or service. These conclusions were confirmed by the achievement of low static stress (brittle) fracture initiation in unwelded steel after a local reduction of ductility by simple prestraining. Symmetrically notched plates of undamaged mild steel cooled below the Charpy V-notch transition range were tested in central static tension: Undamaged plates withstood loads of limit intensity, but when subjected to prior in-plane com-pressive prestraining perpendicular to the notch axis and to accelerated aging, the plates fractured completely or partially at very low static loads, as low as one-tenth of the flow limit.2-4 However, damage could not be easily related to the strongly variable prestrain around a sharp notch. The users of barite in the United States derive their supply partly from the domestic production and partly from the imports from foreign countries. According to the Mineral Resource division of the U. S. Geological Survey, the domestic production of barite in 1913 was 45,298 short tons, valued at $156,275, or $3.45 a ton, and the imports of crude barite were 35,840 short tons, valued at $61,409, or $1.71 a ton. These figures clearly show a decided advantage in cost of the foreign over the domestic barite to users in the United States. The difference in cost is the only advantage to the consumer of foreign barite, for there are large reserves of the mineral in the United States of good grade. The production of many of the operating mines is capable of decided increase, and it is believed that the operating mines together with the large reserves of undeveloped deposits of barite are entirely adequate to meet the demands of the users in the United States. Deposits of barite are known in California, Idaho, Nevada, and Alaska, but most of them are undeveloped because there is, apparently, no market for the material in that region. The domestic production is derived from Missouri .and the Appalachian States, the greater part being obtained from Missouri. Following the outbreak of war in Europe many users of foreign barite in the United States have been forced to seek their supplies at home. It seems opportune at this time, therefore, that a general review be given of the barite industry in the Appalachian States, one of the two areas from which the domestic supply of the mineral is derived, and that attention be directed to the undeveloped deposits in the region. Briefly, then, this paper reviews the barite industry in the Appalachian States, and describes the occurrence, preparation, and uses of the mineral. General Character Barite, known commercially as barytes or heavy spar, is barium sulphate (Baso4), containing when pure BaO, 65.7 per cent., and S03, 34.3 per cent. Hydraulic backfill consisting of siliceous mill tailings was successfully dewatered and consolidated by electrokinetics in a field test conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Star mine, Burke, Idaho. A stope at the 2,000-foot level was filled in such a way that slimes and coarse sand were retained in the scope. Following settlement of solids and decant of surface water, direct current applied between buried electrodes created a firm, dense material in approximately 3 hours. This rapid densification of fine-grained material demonstrated the utility of this method and suggests other applications, particularly in the control of slime deposits that cause serious problems in many deep mines.

Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. The New Haven Meeting. As already announced in special circular, the XCVIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at New Haven, Conn., beginning Feb. 23, 1909. The Secretary of the Local Committee is Prof. J. D. Irving, Box D, Yale Station, New Haven. The program embraces visits to many interesting works in New Haven, Ansonia, Bridgeport, etc. The leading topics for discussion at the sessions will be: The Conservation of Natural Resources; A Sea-Level Canal at Panama; and The Technical Education of Mining Engineers. But papers on other subjects also are announced. A supplementary session of this meeting will be held in New York City, at some time during March, 1909, as a joint session with other national engineering societies, for the further discussion of the subject of The Conservation of Natural Resources. A Pacific Coast Meeting. The XCVIIth meeting will be held on the Pacific Coast, including a visit to the Exposition at Seattle, and various other points en route going or coming, depending upon the route and program finally adopted. More definite information will be announced at the New Haven Meeting, or at the earliest possible date thereafter.

WESTERN Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and Illinois are carrying out experiments wherein much more slate and other impurities are loaded with the coal in the mine and hauled to the surface preparation plant for removal. In general everything is sent to the cleaning plant although there may be some gobbing in the mine. No conclusions have been announced as to the effect of such a mining system on clean coal costs. Such factors as ability of the surface plant to handle the impurities, land and facilities for disposing of the impurities, and the transportation facilities underground should be considered.

THE research and policy committee of the Committee for Economic Development, a non-profit research organization composed of leaders in industry and the professions, including such prominent figures as Dwight D. Eisenhower, Paul G. Hoffman, and Charles E. Wilson, recently published a report entitled "How to Raise Real Wages." Since its founding in 1942 the CED has initiated many objective studies on matters of national economic policy, and has gained a fair measure of prestige from its activities. The CED&apos;s latest report cites the more than three- fold rise in real wages in the United States in the past 50 years and attributes the accompanying improvement in the standard of living to the great in- crease in production per man hour. The report states that in order for production to continue rising in the future with the attendant increase in real wages four basic conditions must be manifest: (1) better methods, (2) more capital, (3) better training of workers, and (4) better management. The report cautions that although prospects for increases in output per man hour are good "it is desirable that steps be taken to encourage such a rise."

Fullers&apos; earth is a clay-like substance, which has the property of decolorizing or clarifying oils. An ultimate chemical analysis shows it to differ from most ordinary clays in having usually a high percentage of combined water and a low amount of alumina. There is probably a large amount of hydrous silica present. Fullers&apos; earth possesses little or no plasticity, and in order to work properly has to be ground very fine. A chemical analysis is of little value at present in determining its quality; only a practical test suffices. Up to about two years ago all of the fullers&apos; earth used in this country was imported from England; but about that time deposits were discovered in Florida, "† and since then rumors of its occurrence have been coming from all parts of the country. Next to the Florida deposits of fullers&apos; earth, those of South Dakota are the most extensive thus far discovered in this country. The earth was first discovered near Fairburn, Custer county, and other deposits have since been prospected at Argyle, Minnekahta and other localities. Lower the respirable dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by isolating and con-fining the dust cloud near the face. Approach Install conveyor belt screens at various locations on the body of the shearer to contain and hold the dust cloud toward the face side of the machine. This approach provides a cleaner air split in the walkway, over the shearer operators. How It Works On most longwall shearer sections, the dust exposure of the shearer operators is primarily attributable to the machine it-self. The dust cloud originates at the face, and the exposure of the operators depends largely on how quickly this dust spreads into the walkway. Conveyor belt screens placed on the gob side of the body of the machine can reduce the amount of dust which spreads out into the walk-way. In addition, belting may be installed over any open spaces between the shearer under-frame and the panline to prevent conveyor dust from boiling out into the operator&apos;s walkway.

Collectively, this presents a unique opportunity to be a world leader in mine rehabilitation. Complex stakeholder landscapes, inflexible policies, aged regulatory frameworks, technical uncertainties and increasing liabilities are all barriers hindering effective transition of legacy assets. The impetus for change is further catalysed by shifting consumer preferences, workforces in flux and regional Australians questioning what the transition means for their local community. We need innovative approaches to take a leading role in the industry and support global efforts more broadly. Co-designing an ambitious, shared vision spanning projects, operations and legacy assets with all key parties is a fundamental step to unlock and realise maximum societal, environmental, economic and reputational value. Serious play and gamification can further enhance this visioning process.

Today we see a paradigm shift in political, environmental, and economic trends, which are challenging the mining industries. It is very clear that these issues are reaching unparalleled scale and complexity. Cost efficiency and corporate social responsibility are the two primary drivers for the mining industry today. The current challenges facing the industry include: ? Due to deterioration of quality of ores, the scale of operations has become humongous which necessitates high degree of automation and remote operations ? Scarcity of skilled manpower and the necessity to minimize employment of humans at unsafe locations ? Automation of routine activities, improving the efficiency of operations and reducing the cost of production ? Land, water and energy have become scarce in most of the resource rich regions In the current macroeconomic conditions, it is obvious that the industry is under tremendous pressure and it is imperative that the industry embraces sustainability, enhanced energy efficiency, and improved resource allocation. Closely related sectors like energy and utilities have set an example by acknowledging the need to alter their business practices to meet the essentials of sustainability, adoption of new operating models, policy and regulation structures. There is a need to continuously optimize the operations across the entire process value chain as well as across geographies in order to meet the market demand while dealing with supply chain constraints. The goals of optimization could be enhancement in productivity, reduction of production costs, carbon footprint, etc. The gamut of operations is vast, starting from exploration to mining, mineral processing, smelting, refining, casting, rolling (deformation processing), heat treatment, and finally manufacturing of industrial products / components. Advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) in combination with modeling and optimization tools have made it possible to address these issues in a quantitative manner based on real life data. Manufacturing industry, for example, has successfully leveraged these technologies (ERP, PLM, MES, APC, etc.) to enhance productivity and quality. In this presentation, I would like to illustrate the benefits that could be derived by implementing ICT-leveraged solutions available today for the mining industries. I will focus on the following recent technological developments in the context of their applications in the mining and minerals industries: Mobility technologies: The industry is looking for strategically sustainable solutions that fit the working profile of mining engineers and which provide up-to-date information in real time. Mobile applications for iPhones and iPads are gaining popularity, which is helping mining engineers to work on-line as well as off-line. Mobility technologies have made it possible to provide data anywhere and anytime in a form you prescribe. This enables proactive responses to changing dynamics of the marketplace. For example, a plant engineer can access information about any critical process equipment, monitor its performance and do the needful as and when needed. Similarly, scheduling of operations can be optimized based on the market demand and on the availability of raw materials, labor, and status of equipment.

"I have been involved in the refractory industry for many years and at some time or another I have designed materials, tested materials, manufactured materials, installed materials, in fact I have done everything except actually chemically analyzed a refractory material.So I would not even begin to tell you how to analyse a refractory material. I&apos;m sure everyone here knows more about chemical analysis than I do.However you could regard me as a customer with and perhaps the insights I have developed may help in putting the role of chemical analysis in the Refractories into perspective.For a start, let&apos;s take a step back and ask why we test refractories. The refractories handbook of the American Foundry Association gives four reasons:1. To determine appropriate specification.2. For quality control, to ensure conformance to specifications.3. To provide special property information not available elsewhere.4. Boyles Bros. Drilling Co. and Gibbons and Reed Company, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, have successfully combined into two joint ventures on the San Juan-Chama project of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The Azotea Tunnel is 12.7 miles in length; the inlet portal is on the Navajo River in Archileta County, Colorado, and the outlet portal is in New Mexico, about 10 miles south of the state border. The Oso Tunnel lies immediately to the north of the Azotea Tunnel and discharges water directly into it. We are presently driving both tunnels with mechanical boring machines from their portals at the Navajo River. Both tunnels are circular, fully concrete lined. The Azotea Tunnel has a finished diameter of 10 ft. 11 inches while the Oso Tunnel is 8 ft 7 inches in diameter. Both tunnels are supported with circular, structural steel rings as required by ground conditions. In good ground rock bolts and steel roof plates are used.
