[This report presents the data of one of a series of investigations of the washability of Alabama coals as indicated by float-and-sink tests mode by the Bureau of Fines at the Southern Experiment Station in cooperation with the University of Alabama and Alabama coal producers. The Klandyke mine, operated by the Blocton Mining Co., is about 1 mile eat of Vest Blocton, Bibb County, Ala., floor the southwestern, extremity of the Cahaba coal field. The Bureau of Mines already has published three reports that deal with the, washability of Cahaba coals - one a washability study of the Clark bed at Marvel4/ one on the tabling of fine coal from the Thompson and Woodstock beds5/, and the third a washability study of the Henry Ellen bed at Acmar6/.]

A new automated post-disaster signaling system, intended to use through-the-earth EM propagation, was demonstrated in the laboratory at an input SNR of -34 dB. The system presently available requires an input SNR of +6 dB, and uses a human-ear detector. The work here demonstrated coherent integration, for the automated system, in multiples of 17 s, up to 1088 s (18 minutes). A repeating pseudorandom (or pseudonoise) signal is used, which offers an ideal auto-correlation at the receiver matched-filter output. A novel decision-variable algorithm achieves the estimate of noise level by using those matched-filter output samples that occur between the signal auto-correlation peaks. This work included corraboration that the received signal power decreases as distance to the tenth power, for through-the-earth propagation. Thus, the above 40 dB reduction in required input SNR permits an automated system to have a range 2.5 times that of the present system. In addition, an automated system permits the possibility of operating receivers around-the-clock; this would reduce the initial-detection-time from a few hours (present system deployment time) to a few minutes (signal processing time).

Of the total 535 projects for which information is provided, 429 concern coal mines and electric generating plants (including Energy Supply and Environmental Coordination Act (ESECA) coal conversion notices).

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. The flash induced combustion of Sewell and Pittsburgh coals was studied in air and in oxygen. The primary decomposition and combustion processes occur within the first 300 ~sec in oxygen and slightly later in air. Strong absorption spectra of CN and OH are indicative of the decomposition and combustion processes, respectively. Kinetic spectroscopy and combustion product analyses indicate that only about 35% of the coal dust is consumed in the explosive combustion which takes place in several (1-5) distinct but similar steps. The combustion-modifying effects of (NH4)2HP04, NH4H2P04, KHC03 and Rock Dust were studied in the 1-20 wt % range in coal dust flash com-busted in air and oxygen. The study reported herein shows Rock Dust to be the most efficient coal combustion inhibitor. KHC03 is the least effective agent, with the phosphate salts showing marginal effectiveness.

This report describes the work performed by Mine Research Company in developing a prototype mobile roof shield during 1971-1972 for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, along with background information leading to the design decisions adopted for the project. In addition, the report evaluates the choice of design and analysis and the results of the project in terms of future possibilities of mobile roof support systems. The report begins with the discussion of the problems of designing, building, and using mechanical and hydraulic roof support in coal mines. It then gives a historical summary of past work with discussions of the design choices made for previous roof support systems.

Charged sprays and fog have been evaluated for reducing respirable dust concen¬trations. Charged spray technology was reviewed for effectiveness, equipment and theoretical considerations. A mathematical model was developed for predicting dust reduction effects. Laboratory tests were made showing charged spray is considerably more effective at reducing dust on a unit water basis than hydraulic spray. Positive and negative sprays are equally effective. Combined polarity sprays are considerably less effective than either polarity alone. Little difference in effectiveness by dust type was observed. The charged cloud can present a spark hazard in explosive atmospheres. Due to this spark hazard from the charged droplet cloud this technique must not be used in gassy mines. Predictions were made for field test conditions but confirmation was impossible due to particles resulting from dissolved solides in the spray water. Dissolved or suspended solids in atomizing sprays can result in an increase of the respirable dust burden. Charged sprays are an available dust control technique best suited to applications where water usage must be limited and long contact time between spray and dust is possible.

Por ello, el presente trabajo señala la aplicación de esta herramienta a una mina subterránea de Oro localizada en el Perú, donde se tiene bloques de mineral económicos, así como señala su accesibilidad con leyes encima del Cut-Off. De forma que se recupera el mineral económico a través de las rutas críticas de carguío, en función de la viabilidad de autosostenimiento.

It is generally accepted that typical coalbed gases (methane and carbon dioxide) are sorbed (both adsorbed and absorbed) in the coal matrix causing it to swell and resulting in local stress and strain variations in a coalbed confined under overburden pressure. The swelling, interactions of gases within the coal matrix and the resultant changes in the permeability, sorption, gas flow mechanics in the reservoir, and stress state of the coal can impact a number of reservoir-related factors. These include effective production of coalbed methane, degasification of future mining areas by drilling horizontal and vertical degasification wells, injection of CO2 as an enhanced coalbed methane recovery technique, and concurrent CO2 sequestration. Such information can also provide an understanding of the mechanisms behind gas outbursts in underground coal mines. The spatiotemporal volumetric strains in a consolidated Pittsburgh seam coal sample were evaluated while both confining pressure and carbon dioxide (C02) pore pressure were increased to keep a constant positive effective stress on the sample. The changes intemal to the sample were evaluated by maps of density and atomic number determined by dual-energy X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT). Early-time images, as soon as CO2 was introduced, were also used to calculate the macro porosity in the coal sample. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photographic images of the polished section of the coal sample at X-ray CT image location were used to identify the microlitho types and microstructures. The CO2 sorption-associated swelling and volumetric strains in consolidated coal under constant effective stress are heterogeneous processes depending on the litho types present. In the time scale of the experiment, vitrite showed the highest degree of swelling due to dissolution of CO2, while the clay (kaolinite) and inertite region was compressed in response. The volumetric strains associated with swelling and compression were between ± 15% depending on the location. Although the effective stress on the sample was constant, it varied within the sample as a result of the intemal stresses created by gas sorption-related structural changes. SEM images and porosity calculations revealed that the kaolinite and inertite bearing layer was highly porous, which enabled the fastest CO2 uptake and the highest degree of compression. In this paper, the authors attempt to apply a simplified non-homogeneous void diffusion model (NHVDM) to predict surface subsidence for longwall mining in Illinois. A generalized error function subsidence profile is derived from this model. The model validation indicates that the NHVDM approach appears to fit the observed subsidence data as well or better than the error and the trigonometric functions, particularly around the trough edge areas.

A critical safety component for all underground mining is intrinsic and standing support systems. Specifically, tabular hardrock mining exploits a wide variety of deposits that require various methodologies to safely mine the ore material. Several new support systems have been developed in recent years for hard rock applications which have been modified or applied in a variety of ground control applications. These include prestressing devices, improved cribs, and free standing supports. Various standing support and prop-type systems have been designed for hard rock applications with seismic loading conditions to accept prestressing. The prestressing, using water-filled cells, creates an active load upon installation and is considered essential to maintain support during and after the blasting of the mine faces. Heavy seismic activity is also present in these mines and the prestressing units can provide some energy absorption capability to help preserve the integrity of the support. This paper presents an overview of these innovations in support technology.

Any effort to improve the metallurgical control of industrial furnaces employed in the primary extraction of high carbon ferroalloys are bound to fail unless the variability of the melt is not fully accounted for. A number of sampling campaigns were performed on both 3phase AC submerged arc and single phase DC open arc furnaces at different smelter sites in South Africa where High Carbon Ferrochrome is produced. It was found that the heterogeneity between multiple samples during a single taps were much higher that for heterogeneity found within a sample. Moreover, this heterogeneity (as quantified by the relative standard deviation per tap) varied with the operating conditions of the furnace, the element monitored and the type of furnace. A relationship was found between the relative standard deviation of certain elements and the degree of subcooling of the melt.

The high cost and limited flexibility of modern longwall systems has resulted in the need for mine engineers and geologists to predict possible adverse mining areas ahead of mining and to then design and implement suitable ground control solutions in a timely and cost effective manner. Therefore, over the last 30 years, geo-technical evaluations for coal mine planning and development have advanced from a minor afterthought to an important part of today?s successful, high capacity, longwall mining operations. The latest iteration in this progression of improved analysis for predicting future mining conditions is a computer-based Stability Mapping System developed by West Virginia University. This system is designed to allow the mining engineer and geologist to effectively combine the mine geologic characteristics, stress influences, and structural features into an integrated stability map for use in mine planning and support design. This paper details the application of the stability mapping system to Bowie Resources, LLC, Bowie No. 3, multiple-seam longwall coal mine. At this mine, the prediction of adverse mining conditions using the stability mapping system allowed management to accurately adjust their support densities and operational procedures, and to successfully mine through difficult conditions safely and successfully.

"Abstract - Wawa has long been a center of mineral exploration activity and diamonds have been reported in the area since the 1930s. However, diamond exploration did not begin in the area in earnest until 1991. In 1993, Sandor Surmacz and Marcelle Hauseux of Saminex began a prospecting program in the area which culminated in their discovery of the "Sandor" diamond occurrence in an outcrop on the east side of the Trans-Canada Highway. They subsequently optioned the property to Spider Resources Inc. who obtained the necessary exploration permits from Algoma Central Corporation and undertook an exploration program. The diamonds at the "Sandor" diamond occurrence are hosted in the matrix of a spessartite dike composed of actinolite, biotite, and albite. Of the 64 similar dikes that have been sampled and analyzed to date, eight have been found to contain a total of 231 diamonds. Most of the diamonds are of high quality, although they are small.The dikes are non-magnetic and do not have any other geophysical characteristic that can be used to differentiate them from the adjacent country rock. All of the dikes discovered to date have been found by prospecting or by geological mapping by the Ontario Geological Survey. The dikes do not contain pyrope garnet or chrome diopside, two of the commonly used kimberlite indicator minerals. Instead, low Mg, high Cr, Zn-rich chromite, and ilmenites of variable composition, some of which lie within the field of kimberlitic Mg-ilmenite compositions, characterize the diamondiferous dikes. A regional-scale till sampling program for heavy minerals, and geochemical analysis of the <0.177 mm fraction, was used to further define the areas of occurrence of the spessartite dikes and to indicate additional areas for diamond prospecting. Heavy minerals in till that were most useful include: actinolite, chromite, and ilmenite. Geochemical analyses of the dikes show them to contain elevated concentrations of Ni and Cr and to be enriched in Ba, Co, V, Ca, Fe, and Mg relative to the surrounding rocks. Elevated concentrations of Ni and Cr in till occur overlying and down-ice of known lamprophyre dikes."

The design and operation of coal preparation plants are governed by the inherent quality of the raw coal to be processed, market specifications and the saleable tonnage requirements. Topography influences the layout of the plant but does not affect the process design. The coal market comprises many sectors, each having specific requirements with respect to both size and quality. In turn, these have led to different levels of preparation and the development of specific types of coal preparation plant design. Developments in processing techniques and processing equipment have also influenced the design and now give the preparation engineer numerous permutations in process and equipment selection. This paper gives an overview of the coal industry in general and summarizes some of the developments in the design of plants and technical developments in the areas of dense medium processing, fine coal treatment and equipment design.

Research and development has been carried out on the patented Dynamic Rock Anchor, tradenamed DYNA-ROK and DYNA-ROK PLUS Anchors, which are manufactured and marketed by Ingersoll-Rand Company. This paper will present the results of field testing of this revolutionary new concept in ground control. Geologic conditions will be described where the plastic sleeve of the DYWA-ROK anchor alone is sufficient to provide anchorage and also, where in softer ground conditions, the DYWA-ROK PLUS is applied. The rationale for making the decision as to the type of fixture to be employed, the length of plastic tube to be used and the quantity of resin are explained. Pull test data will be shown from eight different coal seams in the Eastern United States where the product has been installed.

Sandsloot open pit is situated on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 250 km north east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandsloot is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and is one of six potential open pits in the area. The geotechnical strength properties of the Platreef have posed significant mining and processing challenges to the PPRust operation since inception in 1992. In order to optimize the whole business as opposed to isolated cost centres a mine to mill initiative was embarked upon in 1997. Initial work focused on ore characterization and an entire suite of data was collected for each rock type. This included mineralogy, geochemistry, geotechnical, blast ability indices, as well as metallurgical strength data. The second phase involved the clear definition of customer requirements, namely the optimum performance criteria for the plant and mining departments. This involved extensive field trials and data capture to measure the interaction and influence of the mine to mill value chain. Once the design targets were defined, a 3D geotechnical model was constructed to ensure that the targets were consistently achieved. The model is very similar to an ore reserve model; however, it is populated with geotechnical, metallurgical and blast index data. Through software queries the appropriate blast powder factor for each mining block can be obtained, thereby ensuring the correct fragmentation is blasted for the plant and mining operation. The initiative has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables, as well as higher plant throughput. Only recently has the term Induced Polarization found its way into geophysical literature. Schlumberger first mentioned the possible use of the induced polarization effect in one of his early papers. Later, induced polarization was the subject of several university theses, such as Seigel&apos;s at the University of Toronto and Bliel&apos;s at the Michigan School of Technology. In addition, a group at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technobgy has done work on induced polarization. There is very little to be found in print on the subject of induced polarization. Several papers have been presented at meetings, the 1958 AIME and SEG* conventions, for instance, on laboratory measurements of the effect and theoretical considerations useful in the interpretation of field results. This paper is the first attempt to present actual field results which show the usefulness of induced polarization as a prospecting technique. There are several phenomena that can cause polarization when electrical current is passed through the ground. In a paper presented at the 1958 SEG* meetings Professor T. R. Madden of M. I. T. demonstrated that only two of these gave rise to appreciable effects. The first is a result of the membrane and diffusion effects in a sandstone that contains appre- ciable amounts of clay minerals. The unbonded charges associated with the clay mineral forma material that passes positive and negative ions with different mobilities. When current is passed through such a system for some period of time, polarization results. The second phenomenon, which gives rise to very much larger polarization effects, is the one used in the new prospecting technique. These effects are a result of the blocking action or polarization of metallic or electronic conductors in a medium of ionic solution conduction. This electrochemical polarization, called "the over-voltage effect" by electro-chemists, occurs whenever electrical current is passed through a volume of rock which contains metallic minerals such as base metal sulphides. This polarization at metallic interfaces in ionic solutions depends upon the chemical energies necessary to allow the ions to continue the flow of current by giving up or receiving an electron from the metallic surfaces. The energy stored in this reaction isanalogous to that stored when a condenser is charged. If a d. c. current flowing through such a system is interrupted, the polarization can be detected as a small, decaying current that flows after the applied current is discontinued. The decaying potential measured is a result of the current flow caused by charges returning to their equilibrium positions from the positions they assumed under the applied potential field. An investigation was male of ground response to pillar retreat mining in a 1.7 meter thick seam at 108 meter depth at a site in northern West Virginia. This paper describes mining-related stress changes and movements at nine level, displacements within the overburden, ground surface subsidence and groundwater level variations. Subsidence approached 40 per cent of the nine height ad continued more than a year after mining. Water levels declined la certain deep-lying strata.
