The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

A STURDY and consistent expansion of the metal industry occurred in 1947 exemplified by an increase of approximately 30 per cent in steel consumption over 1946. For this major reason, ferroalloy metals have seen their most useful and important peace-time year. The current domestic rate of consumption of high-grade ferroalloy ores, together with added consumption of new foreign producers as well as for eign nationals' restrictions on high-grade exports, makes very evident the increasing difficulties of obtaining sufficient high-grade ores. This accentuates the need for new and less expensive methods of production of ferro-alloy metals of higher purity from lower-grade domestic resources. As an important factor in preparedness, procurement of these high-grade, -critical ferroalloy minerals and metals for our nation's stock piles is a most important task. Also, this stock-piling can be the means of supplying incentive for the industrial development of the new metallurgical processes and plants necessary for the recovery of ferroalloy metals from our domestic low-grade deposits.

The Miami Copper Co., Arizona, is asking Congress to reimpose the import duty of two cents per pound on copper which, by law, has been suspended until June 30, 1950. C. Donald Dallas, chairman of Revere Copper and Brass, champion of a duty-free regime as regards the red metal, has been answering E. H. Westlake, Miami president, now that Mr. Westlake's statement to stock- holders has been salted away for posterity on wire recorders. Even prior to this action and at the instigation of two prominent consumers of pig lead, the House of Representatives has, in the confines of committee, not yet reported out, as of June 16, a bill to suspend the duty on lead for another year from expiration of the present law June 30, 1949. But apparently the bill was started too late. Thus the tariff issue becomes a Rip Van Winkle again after having slept for several years in the mountains of metals scarcity. During the wartime scarcity and the boom days that followed, most metal producers welcomed a considerable influx of foreign metal since it gave them a little surcease from constant teleibhone calls asking why that delivery of 300 tons of lead, 250 tons of zinc, and 1000 tons of copper had been delayed. These were the days when it was such an undisputed sellers' market that the sellers had even thrown away their certificates of ownership. APOCRYPHAL, no doubt, but widely entertained is the proposition that top-flight mining geologists never agree with each other on anything. Being rugged individualists, they frequently seem intolerant of opinions that conflict with their own. However, one may suspect that controversy is often more apparent than real. For example, at last summer's meeting of the American Mining Congress, Ira B. Joralemon and Reno H. Sales, discussing "Mining Geology, Today and Tomorrow," seemed to be in serious disagreement over various phases of the subject; but much of this arises from the different angles of approach of the two distinguished and successful ore finders.

THE earliest record of copper production from the state of Utah comes from "The Resources of Utah," by. Mr. Fabian, in 1872, wherein it is stated that the. Mammoth mine of East Tintic was located in 1870 and that the ores yielded a large percentage of copper, silver and gold. It is also stated that shipments had been made to Swansea, England, which assayed between $200 and $300 per ton. The Mammoth-Copperopolis mine was located in, 1870 and sold the year following to an English syndicate. Some copper was shipped to. England and in 1873 there was constructed a 15-stamp mill and two copper smelting furnaces; these were operated a few months and before the end of the year were closed down and the property sold for debt. . This property -vas reorganized in 1879 and is at the present day a producer, though its principal product now is lead and silver. While a certain amount of copper has always been coming from the various lead-silver camps of Utah, the real history of copper in Utah should start with the discovery of the mines in Bingham Canyon, located about 25 miles to the southwest from Salt Lake City.

ON superficial consideration a technical library might be considered a luxury to the business institution that possesses one. After all, public libraries and research institutions probably contain all the data that would be found in a private technical library, and able consultants are available both within and without a company. In all probability the technical men of a company have in their combined personal libraries sufficient information to answer most inquiries. Nevertheless, possession of such a department is of real economic benefit because of the time it saves its users, because it prevents expensive duplication of technical literature in a company, and lastly, but most important, be- cause it makes readily available a central storehouse of technical facts classified and indexed to meet the demands of the industry or industries concerned.

CUSHMAN TUNNEL No. 2 is adjacent to the Hood Canal, near potlatch, Wash. It is 17 ft. inside .diameter, about 13,000 ft., or two and one- half, miles in length, and is a part of the second unit of the Cushman power project. It connects Cushman ' Dam No. 2 and the penstocks that lead to the power house on the beach about 400 ft. vertically below the outlet of the tunnel. One shaft, 190 ft. deep, and two adits between 300 and 400 ft. long, were provided to speed up driving operations. his arrangement gave 6 working headings, which were operated 24 hr. daily. The shaft provided a manway, cageway, and skipway.

THERE has never been a great civilized nation which did not have a mining industry; civilization cannot flourish without metal mining. Without tools we can have none of the 'industries that are the foundation of civilization and without metal mining we cannot produce the material of which tools are made. Therefore, if we have no metal mining we have no metals, no tools, no civilization. An example to illustrate this may be drawn from a recent article in the Saturday Evening Post which described the run-down condition of modern Athens. Athens is nothing but a busted mining camp! In its palmy days the Greeks so applied the leasing system to the silver mines of Laurium that the royalties, paid the expenses of government and instead of a tax bill the inhabitants received a pay check. The Persians came over to capture these mines but the Greek navy was built to defend them. When the silver mines played out, Greek civilization declined.. Our mining must continue if our civilization is to continue.

THE mineral industries in this country have now had about a year of national planning. Al. though the period is short, the volume of activity and legislation designed to make that planning effective has been nothing short of enormous. Those who have been privileged to see and study a few of the codes to regulate our mineral industry, such as those for oil, coal, steel, and copper, are driven to the conclusion that nothing was really known about the proper way to conduct those industries in this country prior to June, 1933; or if anything was known, nobody in actual practice made use of that knowledge. And yet those industries, in days gone by, helped to make this country the most prosperous in the world, and to maintain a standard of living even today higher than that of any other country. Without wishing to assume any first-hand knowledge of the Russian standard of living, I must confess that the evidence seems to indicate that even with dictatorial authority, national planning encounters unexpected difficulties. IN the Wall Street journal for March 1, 1941, was a tabulation of the construction under way or under negotiation by thirteen iron and steel companies for a predicted increase in annual coke production of 3,165,600 tons. That even this figure was short of the mark is indicated by other plans, then being considered, for a later expansion of 2,610,000 tons additional. Considerable progress has already been made on thin program, for approximately 500 new ovens were put in operation in 1941. and well over 200 should be completed in 1942. These figures include a number of units that replace older and obsolete equipment.

MANY different methods are used for transporting coal from the working face to the tipple. The common methods are animal haulage, locomotive haulage, conveyor systems, and combinations of these three, supplemented, at times, by the miner pushing his own car. Haulage may also be classified into gathering and main line. Gathering haulage is the collecting of loaded cars to a point whence they are hauled to the tipple. In this there is perhaps more lost-time than on the main line because there are .more units in the operation to be synchronized. Also, conditions on the gathering haul- age, such as bad track, poor timbering, insufficient motive power, etc., cause delays; usually these are corrected on the main-line haulage.

IN reviewing the field of mineral industry education last year reference was made to recent assertions, mostly emanating from sources not in a position to know the facts, that mining engineers as a class are disappearing. Os mancais de rolamento dos rolos secadores da linha de estanhamento eletrolítico da CSN são expostos a severa contaminação por água e ácido sulfúrico. O tempo médio entre falhas (MTBF) de cada rolamento da linha é de apenas 30 dias. A CSN aceitou realização de teste com um par de rolamentos autocompensadores de rolos vedados que foram montados em um rolo, com a supervisão da SKF. Os rolamentos do teste operaram por mais de 150 dias, apresentando sobrevida superior a 400% até o momento, sendo que ainda continuam em operação. Há cerca de 60 rolamentos operando simultaneamente na linha, sendo que a solução poderá ser replicada para os demais pontos, aumentando a vida em serviço dos rolamentos e reduzindo custos de manutenção.

Os rolamentos da máquina de lingotamento contínuo de placas foram inspecionados após campanha do segmento. O tempo de operação foi de uma campanha (1,5 ano ou 1,5 milhão de toneladas produzidas). Nos mancais centrais dos rolos longos, foram inspecionados 14 rolamentos, sendo 2 deles SKF com microestrutura bainítica e os demais 12 de outro fabricante, com microestrutura martensítica. Os rolamentos SKF eram de classe de desempenho Explorer e aprimorados, ficando evidenciado modo de falha seguro, diferentemente dos demais rolamentos, que apresentaram fadiga subsuperficial acentuada (descascamento), fraturas por fadiga e superaquecimento. A aplicação de lingotamento contínuo é bastante crítica para rolamentos, pois contempla sobrecarga, cargas de choque, contaminação por água e particulado sólido e altas temperaturas de operação. Ainda assim, a vida em serviço dos rolamentos com microestrutura bainítica foi estendida.

O trabalho surgiu mediante a necessidade de reduzir o custo na compra de anéis de laminação em 50% do que é praticado atualmente. Os anéis de laminação utilizados atualmente no 1º passe de laminação do laminador de perfis leves são anéis fabricado de aço ferramenta D2 e tem um custo alto para serem fabricados. No processo de laminação de perfis leves utilizamos cassetes onde são alocados esses anéis e para realizar a laminação de cantoneiras faz-se necessário a montagem de 4 anéis bi-partidos no eixo superior e 2 anéis bi-partidos no eixo inferior totalizando 6 anéis por cassete, além de reservas que temos que garantir para a realização de trocas por desgaste por laminação. Para o processo de fabricação de barra chata utilizamos 2 anéis de mesa lisa 1 no eixo superior e outro no eixo inferior, além de reservas para possíveis trocas. Tendo em vista o alto número de anéis que devemos ter para nosso processo resolvemos desenvolver esses anéis a partir de cilindros sucatas de um dos laminadores de nossa unidade, de modo a reaproveita-los e com isso eliminar a compra dos anéis de aço ferramenta D2. Após o desenvolvimento realizamos o teste com os cilindros do laminador DEMAG da unidade de Barra Mansa e os anéis apresentaram performance muito semelhante ao dos que utilizamos atualmente. Com isso todos os cilindros no final de vida útil do laminador de Barra Mansa são nos enviados para passar pelo processo de usinagem serem reutilizados.

After the presentation of a co-authored paper, "The Cost of Transporting Ores and Raw Materials in World Markets", at the February SME meeting, one questioner commented, "You have been talking about the large shipper and ship loads. What does the small shipper do?" This paper will attempt to answer that question, at least in part. Probably the questioner hoped to hear about specific new tools and new techniques that he could apply. But one paper could only scratch the surface of the vast fund of information available; so rather than talk specifics we should take basics, that is, people, management and technology.

An Overall View of the Japanese Ferroalloys Industry 1) Depressed Demand for Ferroalloys: In Japan consumption of ferroalloys in the last ten years has decreased, although there has been some fluctuation from year to year. During this term production figures of the steel industry, which are closely related to consumption of ferroalloys, are as follows: Shipment of steel products for the domestic market has declined gradually from 69 million tons in 1979, which was the peak year for steel production, to 60.3 million tons in 1982 and 60.4 million tons in 1983, the level of 1978. In addition, exports also have been a downward trend since 1976, which was the peak year with tonnage of 34 million tons, to 28 million tons in 1982 and 31 million tons in 1983.

As all of us know, the "heat" is on for western coal. The need for western coal is critical if the nation is to reach the goals of Project Independence by 1985. Without the development of western coal, the goals will not be met. It's that simple! That's because 50 percent of our nation's coal reserves lie in the states of North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. And surface mining is the key to unlocking these reserves. Of the nine states in the coal provinces, five-Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Arizona-are the best examples since surface mining accounts for 88 to 100 percent of the coal mined in each of these states. Collectively, their annual production more than doubled between 1969 and 1972, rising to 35 million tons per year. And, taken individually, each state's production has more than doubled, also. Total annual production from these five key states could very well exceed 180 million tons per year by 1980-four times the 1972 production level. The biggest producer among the five is Wyoming. Wyoming's production tripled since 1969 to nearly 14 million tons in 1973. So the heat is on for western coal, especially from Wyoming. Now we come to the question of how to mine this increasingly precious mineral. What are the available methods? First, let's take a brief look at several characteristics of western coal deposits.
