Reservoir performance predictions based on laboratory core test data assume that fluid flow is laminar for the laboratory test. A study has been made to determine the validity of this assumption for laboratory tests on various types of porosity found in producing limestone formation. Data are presented which show that turbulence and slippage can occur during laboratory tests on hetero-geneous-type porosity limestones, thus causing serious errors in measured single-phase permeabilities and two-phase relative permeability characteristics. In single-phase flow tests it is possible to eliminate turbulence and correct for slippage or to eliminate both factors by controlling test conditions. It is not always possible to control test conditions and thereby eliminate turbulence and slippage in two-phase .flow tests. A correction method is presented which can be used to calculate the true two-phase laminar flow relative permeability characteristic even though furbulence and slippage exist. .INTRODUCTION It is customary to make use of Darcy's law and modifications of this law, together with laboratory data on formation core samples to predict the performance of producing reservoirs. Such predictions are based on an assumption that fluid flow is in the laminar or streamline region for the laboratory test. It was the purpose of this inves- tigation to determine the extent to which turbulent flow may occur in laboratory fluid flow tests on hetero-geneous porosity limestones. Considering that turbulent flow conditions might exist in some laboratory fluid flow tests, additional emphasis was placed on the development of a method to correct for turbulence when laminar flow conditions could not be attained. FLUID FLOW CONCEPTS FOR POROUS MEDIA The Influence of Pore Geometry on Fluid Flow One of the more important factors influencing fluid flow in porous media is the geometry of the pore space which includes such characteristics of the pores as size, shape, distribution, roughness, uniformity, etc. In general, oil- and gas-producing formations can be divided into two broad types on the basis of pore geometry. One has been called sandstone-type porosity media, which is characterized by a small range in pore size, uniformity in shape of the pores, smooth pore surfaces and a regular and uniform distribution of pores. The other type has been called heterogeneous porosity media and is usually limited to the dolomites and limestones. This type is characterized by a wide variation in the size, shape, and distribution of the pores and rough, irregular pore surfaces. It is therefore apparent that conditions are much more favorable for turbulent flow* in heterogeneous-type porosity media than in sandstone-type porosity media. Interrelationship Between Turbulence and Gas Slippage In studying the problem of turbulent flow in laboratory tests on porous media, it is necessary to be aware of the interrelationship between slippage and turbulence for gas flow. As a result of slippage or the Klinken-berg effecta, apparent perrneabilities to gas are greater than the true value because there is no stationary layer of gas in contact with the walls of the flow channels. Gas slippage decreases as the mean free path of the gas molecules decreases. Since the mean free path of any gas decreases with increasing density, increases in static pressure result in lower apparent gas permeabilities. However, a reduction in gas permeability can also be due to turbulence. Therefore, in studying only turbulent flow in porous media, it is necessary to hold gas density, and slippage, constant or to reduce slippage to a negligible value by operating at high static pressures. Presentation of Laminar and Turbulent Flow Data A graphical relationship between permeability and a pseudo-Reynolds number, N,, will be used to show the two types of fluid flow, i.e., laminar and turbulent. The usual graphical method for such a description has been the use of friction factor-Reynolds number charts4. On such a logarithmic diagram, the laminar region appears as a straight line having a slope of 45 degrees. As the friction factor decreases and the Reynolds number increases, the turbulent region is reached and appears as a deviation from the 45-degree slope line. RAPIDLY rising world demand for mineral pro- ducts has accelerated depletion of the more readily accessible ores, particularly those of premium grade. Operations must proceed at a faster rate to deeper horizons, where there are problems of ground control that restrict economic recovery of the mineral and introduce new hazards to mine personnel. For some of the new Canadian mining fields severe problems of ground stress are still in the future, but much of Canada's mineral output comes from well established mines that have reached considerable depths. It must also be anticipated that the depletion of premium grade ores will eventually necessitate mining low grade material at competitive cost, and unsolved problems of ground control can materially increase costs. Studies of ground stress phenomena in underground workings are therefore considered a present-day necessity, especially since these investigations must be a long-term effort owing to the highly complex nature of the problem and the difficulty of making full-scale observations.

DEURING the past year the uranium milling industry has seen the installation and initial operation of solvent extraction circuits in the Climax Uranium Co. mill at Grand Junction, Colo.; the Kerr-McGee Oil Industries mill at Shiprock, N. M.; and the AEC pilot plant at Grand Junction, operated by National Lead Co. Inc. The Vitro Uranium Co. mill in Salt Lake City is converting to solvent extraction, and the new Union Carbide Nuclear Co. mill to be constructed at Rifle, Colo., will also employ this method. Solvent extraction circuits will be incorporated in two mills now under construction -the Texas Zinc Minerals Co. mill at Mexican Hat, Utah, and the Gunnison Mining Co. mill at Gunnison, Colo. In Canada the expansion of the Eldorado mill at Port Radium includes installation of a solvent extraction circuit. Solvent Extraction Process: In simplest terms, the organic solvent is mixed with leach liquor and then the organic and aqueous phases are allowed to separate. By this contact the solvent selectively extracts uranium from the liquor, leaving a raffinate, or barren leach liquor, which may be discarded. The pregnant solvent is stripped of its uranium by con- tact with a stripping solution, such as aqueous sodium carbonate, which has a greater affinity for uranium than the solvent does. The barren solvent from the stripping step is available for further leach liquor extraction, and the pregnant stripping solution, which usually contains 30 to 60 g U3O8 per liter, is ready for precipitation of a final product, or uranium concentrate.

Bureau of Mines research has resulted in the development of fluid- bed ion-exchange columns for recovering uranium from slime pulps. In pilot plant tests, slime slurries containing up to 6 percent solids were processed at flow rates of 10 gallons per square foot per minute with high uranium recoveries and efficient resin loadings. Uranium was effectively eluted in a laboratory fluid-bed elution column at eluate-to-resin ratios of less than 5:1 and eluate flow rates of 3 gallons per square foot per minute. Construction costs of mills using these improved ion exchange techniques are estimated to be 25 percent less than for mills using solvent extraction of clear solutions. For mills having a capacity of 2,000 to 2,500 tons of ore per day, the saving would be in the range of $2.5 million. In addition, a saving of about $0.80 per ton of ore in total operating costs is indicated.

Oil and gas activities in Indiana during 1943 continued to decline at about the same rate as in 1942. New development, production, and prospecting, all showed the results of Federal regulation, low price for crude oil and shortages of labor and materials. Several local stripper-well operations were shut down, but no large-scale abandonment has occurred as yet. During the year, 277 holes were drilled for oil and/or gas, of which 99 were completed as oil wells, 19 as gas wells and 159 as dry holes. This record was a decline of 21 per cent over last year in the total number of completed tests, 20 per cent in the number of oil wells and 9.5 per cent in the number of gas wells. As in the previous year, most of the drilling (82 per cent) was in the southwestern part of the state, Gibson County ranking first, with 77 completions and 49 oil wells. Posey County was second, with 59 completions and 20 oil wells. The remaining 18 per cent of the drilling was in the old Trenton oil and gas area. The total footage drilled during the year was 482,799 ft., a decline of 18 per cent from the previous year. Of this, 146,559 ft. was wildcat footage. The total initial production of the oil wells completed was 6362 bbl. and of the gas wells was 2,562,000 cu. feet. Three tests in the old Trenton area were drilled into the Cambrian and reported nothing more than tar residue. A Devonian test was to be made in the Griffin field in the Wabash River but owing to the delay caused by Federal restrictions this test did not get started in 1943. It is expected to spud in March 1944. The new discoveries in 1943 were virtually all in the southwestern part of the state, and all, so far, one-well pools, except the North Owensville pool, in Gibson County. The latter was brought in during the month of February and by the end of the year nine wells were producing in the pool, with a reported initial yield of 1260 bbl. per day. By the end of the year it had a daily average production of 401 bbl. and an accumulated production of 39,129 bbl. The average gravity of the oil is reported to be 35.6. On the Ohio-Indiana state line, early in 1943, a new pool was opened up in the old Trenton area. The discovery well was on the Ohio side of the line. An offset well was completed on the Indiana side, with an initial yield of 64 bbl., and settled down to 5 bbl. per day. This well produced 1154 bbl. up to Dec. 31, 1943. There was no further development here, because of the Federal Conservation Order M-68, restricting drilling to one well on 40 acres. The development pattern usually followed in this area is one well to 5 acres. The E. Rogers field was extended by one pool (Table 4). Most of the development in the oil-field pools during the year took place in the Kirksville pool, in Gibson County, and the Caborn pool, in Posey County. Key elements of open-pit design fixing the ultimate pit limits are stripping ratio, pit slope angle, and grade cutoff. Results of exploratory and development drilling should be reduced to horizontal sections corresponding to level spacing. It is advisable to interpolate the actual drillhole values to a uniformly spaced 50-ft grid system. Vertical sections can be and are used to approximate the fixing of pit limits, but horizontal sections must be used to optimize a pit design. To develop a pit design requires the establishment of the break-even stripping ratio. This ratio is applied only at the surface of the final pit and must not be confused with the over-all ratio, which is always less; otherwise there would be no profit in the operation. In mining, all unit operations are closely interrelated, and the results of blasting are probably the key factor within that sequence. The drilling program prior to blasting is just as dependent upon the desired rock fragmentation as are the loading, hauling, and mechanical crushing operations which are economically and technically influenced by the results of blasting, namely, the size and scatter of the product. What is known today as optimum blasting is the process of designing a blast in order to obtain a certain degree of fragmentation so that overall mining costs are minimized. Applying this criterion often results in a different program than when an individual blasting pattern is chosen only on the basis of the lowest operational cost for that pattern, disregarding what comes before or after the blast. [Fig. 1] shows the characteristic variation of mining unit costs with the degree of fragmentation, or the maximum size of blocks obtained from blasting. From the figure, it can be seen that optimum breakage must correspond to the lowest total costs, but reducing drilling-blasting costs only does not achieve such an optimum solution. Methods of designing surface or underground blasting operations should comply with the optimization criterion, but this compliance is feasible only if a detailed mining system analysis is available. Therefore, predictions of costs of loading, transporting, and mechanical breakage of ore as a function of its size will define a narrow range of variation for drilling and blasting parameters in order to get the minimum total costs.

The following description is based on the film's narrative script: The film opens with a description of the terrain--tens of thousands of yearly snows compressed into glacial ice, stretching further than the eye can see. A single massive frozen cap--1 812 992 km2 (700 thou- sand sq miles) covering most of the land mass of the world's largest island, christened strangely enough--Greenland. Greenlanders comprise more than two-thirds of the 40 thousand Danish subjects who brave the elements in the Arctic Circle. Along the coastal fringe where the Gulf Stream sheds its last vestige of tropical warmth to temper Greenland summers, tiny villages survive In virtual isolation. Jagged fjords and creeping glaciers are barriers to conventional communication. There are no roads through the year-round ice. Yet, when there is wealth in the land, there are people to tame it, harnessing those unrelenting forces of nature if they can building and surviving in spite of them if they must. Near the tiny site of Marmorilik in west Greenland a gathering of men from places more benign came to challenge a sheer, frozen rock named Black Angel Mountain to tap a deposit of lead and zinc ore. As far back as the 19301s, surface investigation showed zinc and lead sulfides in the vicinity. In the mid-60's mountaineering geological examinations were made and deep-hole drilling, directed by Cominco Ltd., of Canada, confirmed the presence of an ore body, 600 m (2000 ft) above the fjord. Recently, Green reported some high-temperature, 0.60 to 0.89 T3, creep results on unalloyed tantalum. From his study he determined an activation energy of 114 kcal per mole for steady-state creep using the T, differential-temperature method25 for testing. He accounted for the difference between this value and 110 kcal per mole for self-diffusion by the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus, 4 kcal per mole. This reported activation energy is in apparent disagreement with that which can be determined from Green's isothermal data, which we have plotted as log creep rate vs 1/T in Fig. 15. From this figure, it appears that there are two activation energies of -185 kcal per mole at the higher temperatures and -75 kcal per mole at the lower temperatures. It is not obvious that the data can be fitted to a straight line corresponding to an activation energy of 114 kcal per mole. One is led to two possible conclusions regarding Green's study: there are two discrete processes controlling the creep rate from 0.60 to 0.89 Tm or the apparent activation energy is not discrete but continuously increases with increasing temperature. The former speculation would be in closer agreement with the high-temperature creep behavior of tungsten.28 The apparent disagreement between the activation energies determined by the AT and isothermal methods certainly suggests that further study on the high-temperature creep of tantalum is needed.

THE best method for the estimation of copper in ores and secondary products is that proposed by Dr. Steinbeck* for the award offered by the Mansfeld'schen Ober-Berg-und Hutten-Direction. It is based upon the decolorization of the blue ammonia solution of copper by potassic cyanide,† It is necessary for the accurate estimation of copper in arsenides that the arsenic be separated from the copper before the ammonia solution is made. The presence of a notable amount of arsenic renders the titration by potassic cyanide inaccurate, the end reaction being obscured by the appearance of a yellowish-green tint towards the end of the titration. The change of the color of the ammonia solution from blue to the tint caused by the presence of arsenic cannot be used for an end reaction, for the intensity and quick appearance of the latter-color depend upon the amount of arsenic present in the solution. In the analysis of speise, the method of separating the copper by an oxidizing and reducing treatment in the muffle, to volatilize the arsenic, gives poor results, and there may easily be some loss of the weighed sample. The separation of the precipitated sulphides of arsenic and copper by treating with sodic sulphide, gives good results, but the process is tedious. I have used the two following methods, which are simpler and more expeditious than those mentioned, with good results. * Fresenius, Zeitschrift Air Anal. WHEN a new material becomes available to industry, it is useful to describe its properties as a guide to its most effective application; and when the new material may be produced in compositions having a series of graded properties, tests to select the combination of properties best adapted for various uses are helpful. The class of materials to be con-sidered in this paper are hard tool materials produced by processes of powder metallurgy from hard carbide constituents and various matrices of iron, nickel or cobalt, or alloys of them with tungsten, or tungsten and carbon. The customary use of carbide hard alloys is for metal-cutting tools; although wire-drawing dies, lathe centers, follow rests, grinding rests, burnishers, rolls, extrusion dies, measuring gauges and micrometers, and a number of other tools are also made with these hard alloys as the essen-tial wear-resisting parts. The properties and tests to be considered are those affecting these uses. In the development of tool, materials since the industrial revolution we have had carbon tool steels, Mushet steel, high-speed steels, stellites, and now cemented carbide compositions. For an understanding of the latter category of materials their properties and uses relative to the older and more familiar tool materials will be considered.

HENRY FAY (communication to the Secretary*).-In reply to the discussion of my paper, I wish to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Chairman and the various gentlemen who have taken part. I regret that others have not offered criticism, for honest differences of opinion often lead to the truth, and suggest new lines of work. An experiment has been made which bears on Prof. Sauveur's discussion and which helps to emphasize the conclusion that cementation is not a factor in the hardening of: the surface. Dr. Langenberg, of the Watertown Arsenal, has heated for me, in vacuo at 1,000° C., a piece of the metal containing a hard surface. The microstructure shows uniform distribution of carbon throughout the metal, showing that no carbon has been added to .the surface and heating in vacuo has prevented any oxidation of the surface.

1910, hundreds of thousands of dollars of work and equipment in a 1500-foot shaft, crosscuts and pumping had found only copper-lean pyrite in two cross- cuts, and nothing in a third. Going aimlessly along the third crosscut one day, after looking at the barren face I happened to notice a dark spot in the white limestone, near the floor on one side. I picked, and found it was a little triangle of rich chalcopyrite. Next day I took Bill Gohring, then mine superintendent, in to see it. He said nothing else had succeeded so we might as well try that. The new drift broke into a full face of high grade copper ore in the first round, and continued in rich ore for 2200 feel broken only by a couple of short stretches of lean pyrite. The earlier crosscuts had happened to cut these lean areas. The accompanying charts are presented to extend and improve a chart published under the title "A Chart to Provide Approximate Correction for Temperature and Deviation from Boyle's Law."' The applicability of this earlier chart was limited by the fact that it was based on the work of Burke and Keyes² and Kvalnes and Gaddy3 whose experiments were conducted with pure methane, the adjustments suggested for natural gases of higher specific gravity were unsatisfactory except within limited ranges of temperatures and pressures, and precise interpolation was difficult. The extensive work of G. G. Brown, D. L. Katz and their associates on the heavier natural gases has provided better bases for the needed corrections, and the present charts. which are based largely on their work, are intended to simplify the computations involved. The design of the charts has been changed by plotting temperatures as a function of pressure and correction factor, on a semilogarithmic or "ratio" grid, which gives fairly even spacing of the graphs and simplifies interpolation. Charts have been prepared for natural gas with specific gravities of .60, .65, .70, .75 and .80. The problem of scrap is probably of greater importance in the pro duction of gold, silver and other precious metal alloys than is the case for base metals and alloys. Remelting of gold and silver scrap in the shop is always a costly process because it involves losses by oxidation of thc base metals in the alloy with a consequent increase in the percentage of precious metal. This is most marked in the case of alloys containing the low-boiling and easily oxidized metals zinc and cadmium. Since it is not generally feasible to assay every shop remelt it follows that the possibilities of lost values arc large. So-called rolled gold and silver plate is made by soldering or welding the precious metal alloys onto base metal. Such plate when defective must be sent to the refinery to recover the gold and silver values, thereby involving additional expense in the form of refining charges. It is obvious therefore that gold and silver alloy scrap is an important item in manufacturing cost and must be reduced to a minimum. The amount of scrap resulting from poor metal will depend on a number of factors in the manufacturing operations, not least among which is the melting and casting practice. The notes which follow are a summary of experiments performed at various times to determine what variables in melting and casting are influential in the production of sound alloys. Metals Used in Alloying Pure gold, that is, gold of 24-kt. value is very much too soft for jewelry purposes and it is therefore always alloyed with other metals to increase its hardness and resistance to wear. For the same reason pure silver is seldom used alone but is alloyed with copper, the standard alloy being sterling silver which contains 92.5 per cent. silver and 7.5 per cent. copper. The metals commonly used for alloying gold are silver, coppcr, nickel and zinc. In addition to hardening the gold and producing alloys of different karat values the use of these metals makes possible the production of gold alloys of various colors such as yellow, red, green and white. THE following statement is contained in an article entitled "Mortgaging the Future." by Walter C. Teagle, president of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jer-sey, appearing in the current issue of the Lamp, the official organ of the Standard Oil Co.: "During the last eight months the domestic daily production. of crude oil has risen 300,000 bbl.. which means that no less a volume than 2,500,000 bbl. now are coming to market each day. . . . Every twenty-four hours 250,000 bbl. more than the consumer required are being added to our surplus oil storage. The temporary advantage of cheap petroleum products and the availability of fuel .oil, for a widespread use as a substitute for coal are not being weighed against the time when scarcity may follow on the heels of plenty and the public of tomor-row may have to pay for today's excesses. The over-production of crude and its consequences constitute a problem of national import which far outweighs the temporary advantages either to a part of the industry or to sections of the public.

The results obtained were simply a function of necessity, as will be seen from the description of the local economic conditions and the character of the ores treated. The mines and mill of the Socorro Gold Co. are located near the small village of Harrisburg, about 60 miles from Congress Junction, Ariz., which, at the time this work was undertaken, was the nearest railroad station, and from which all supplies were brought by wagon through the desert, at a cost varying from $10 to $15 per ton in addition to the railroad freights. Wood, the only available fuel, cost $7 per cord. Water for all purposes was pumped to the plant from a well in the valley about 4 miles away. Under the Arizona law, a working-shift is 8 hr. Wages were $6 per day for foremen and mill-men, $4 per day for blacksmiths and engineers, $3.50 per day for miners, and $3 per day for shovelers and trammers. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerale were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was equipped with plates for amalgamation, and three Standard tables for concentration. The tails from the tables mere elevated by a centrifugal pump to a launder, by which they were conveyed to a 60-ton cyanide-mill for further treatment. The cyanide-mill was erected at so great a distance from the stamp-mill that a separate crew of workers and a separate power-plant were necessary.
