THE geognostical relations of the metals and their ores present many problems of great interest, alike for the geologist, the chemist, and the mining engineer. The association with certain rock-formations of characteristic mineral species may help to guide the geologist in the identification of geological horizons, and throw light on the chemical activities which have been especially manifested in certain periods; while it is clear that such relations, if established, must be of great utility to the miner, and especially to the explorer of new regions. In inquiries of this kind, however, it is only by careful observations over wide areas, and by the collocation of a great number of facts, that anything like a safe basis for induction can be attained. The effects of hasty and imperfect generalizations in this field have already in many instances been felt to the prejudice of scientific progress. I come before you to-night, therefore, not to lay down any laws or general principles, but to call your attention to certain facts, many of them doubtless known to you, which have forced themselves on my attention, with regard to the associations of various metallic ores and other useful minerals with different series of stratified rocks, and to ask you to aid the progress of this branch of geognostical inquiry. Your observations in the various regions to which you may be called by your professional duties will enable you to determine how far these associations are mere coincidences, and how far they are chemical and geological constants. The associations here to be noticed concern only those mineral species which occur, either distributed through the strata in such a manner as to show that they are contemporaneous deposits, or occupy rifts or gash-veins in these strata, and may be supposed to have been

A NUMBER of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing.. These publications demonstrate both, the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish -to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. In order to determine the usefulness of geochemical and biogeochemical prospecting for nickel, ten localities representing several types of nickel occurrences were selected as sites from which to collect plant and soil samples. This report covers the investigations in two of the areas. After a brief geologic description of the areas, the author presents details of the experimental tests and resulting data. Conclusions drawn from the studies led to several general guides for further prospecting. In a study of the usefulness of geochemical and biogeochemical prospecting for nickel made about three years ago, approximately ten localities, representing several different types of nickel occurrences, were sampled and about 1500 samples of plant and soil were collected. This report will cover briefly the data and results for two areas, and a summary of guides for prospecting. DESCRIPTION OF AREAS SAMPLED One locality is the Red Flats nickel prospect in Curry County, Ore., about six miles southeast of Goldbeach, and the other is the Little Rocky Creek prospect in Stillwater County, southcentral Montana, just southeast of the Benbow chromite mine. The Oregon area is a lateritic-type nickel deposit formed on a nickel-rich serpentinite peridotite complex, similar to the Josephine intrusion in southwestern Oregon. The Montana area is a nickel prospect in norite, peridotite, and related rocks of the Stillwater igneous complex. The Stillwater complex is a series of layered basic and ultrabasic rocks, with a layer of norite-gabbro at the base and a series of peridotites and gabbros above. The nickel in the Oregon deposit occurs in both the peridotite and the overlying soil. A deep lateritic soil is developed locally on the peridotite and serpentinite and constitutes the ore. The average nickel content of the lateritic soil is less than 1 pct, whereas the nickel content of the weathered peridotite is about 1 to 1.5 pct. The nickel occurs as garnierite (Mg, Fe, Ni, Mn)3 (OH)4 (SiA1)2O5 in the soil and in the olivine and pyroxene in the peridotite where it probably substitutes for Fe2+ or Mg2+ in the silicate lattices. Nickel is found in three distinct ways in the Still-water rocks: 1) it is in the olivine and pyroxene minerals in norite, harzburgite, etc.; 2) it occurs as widely disseminated grains of pentlandite-pyr-rhotite, which tend to be concentrated in the lower norite band; and 3) it occurs as discrete bodies of pentlandite-pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite which are localized in the norite zone, close to the contact with the underlying rocks. The nickel content of the norite is probably less than 1 pct, and the nickel content of the pods and lenses within the norite is about 1 pct. PROSPECTING APPROACH Although the areas are different geologically, the approach in prospecting them is fundamentally the same. The procedure is twofold: 1) a rapid reconnaissance survey to outline an area of high nickel content, and 2) a more detailed survey to outline zones of possible ore grade within the area of high nickel. The possible ore at Red Flats is concentrated in the lateritic soil, whereas at Little Rocky Creek it is in the sulfide pods. Both types are surrounded by an area of relatively high nickel content. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS Chemical analyses of nickel were made by a di-methylglyoxime colorimetric test, similar to the standard test for nickel, utilizing concentrated sul-furic acid for extraction. The lower limit of detection for nickel in soil by the method used was about 10 ppm and for nickel in plants about 5 ppm. The relative deviation was about 25 pct. SOIL PROSPECTING General Statements: A summary of the approximate average parts per million of nickel in soil, as compiled from the literature and from my study, is given in Table I. Selected references are given at the end of the paper. Few of the investigators reported the type of extraction or analysis, so the data given may not be strictly comparable to mine, which were made with a sulfuric acid extraction. Any nickel concentration greater than these average values might be considered anomalous, although each area must be studied in relation to the surrounding rocks. Method of Soil Sampling: The soil samples were taken in a zone from 1 in. to 1 ft below the humus layer, and within a 15-ft radius around a station.

Project Management is the planning, implementation and monitoring of the Engineering, Procurement and Construction activities that are necessary to complete the project in the most economic manner. In the case of a crushing and grinding plant, completing the project would mean bringing it into full operat ion. Engineering is the design work for the purpose of producing drawings and technical specifications for Construction together with technical specifications and quantities for Procurement. Procurement is the arranging of con- tracts so that equipment, material and labour are brought as required to the construction site. Construction covers the on-site activities that bring together the components of Engineering and Procurement so as to arrive at a finished plant. Need & Cost Benefits Project Management systems are needed to allow progress and expenditures to be monitored so that any significant deviations from the plan can be identified and the appropriate corrective action taken. In this way, Project Management is able to give continual updated answers to the Owners broad questions. - What am I getting? - What will it cost? - When will it be ready? The need for Project Management is not always immediately apparent, a common belief being that the existence of the three components -Mining Company - Equipment Supplier - Construction Company - is sufficient to get the job done without a formal project management group. A GREAT labor, surely, is that of the coppersmith, since his every work must be hewn from the mass of copper by force of the hammer. At the beginning, middle, and, end all his works are inconvenient pieces and unpleasant to handle. If the work is done on the forge with the fire, it is done in order to refine or compose it into masses again, for drawing these out while hot with the blows of some heavy hammer, or in order to put the works in a condition that allows them to be drawn out while cold and worked. In this he puts all his labor and industry. He who works at this art often makes use of large hammers, sometimes of small ones, and sometimes of those that have a long iron head and a short handle. With these he is obliged ever to proceed in one of these activities, either extending the work lengthwise, narrowing it, or widening it. This is achieved by the manner and direction of striking and therefore it is sometimes hammered on the inside, sometimes on the outside, sometimes with the peen, and sometimes with the flat head. For instance, when he wishes to close it up he strikes it on the outside with the peen, and if he wishes to widen it he strikes it on the inside with either the flat head or the peen. In this way he proceeds to shape it with constant patience, and to make all the vessels that he works graceful. This metal, as I have told you, is soft, flexible, and tenacious under the hammer. It yields with a certain toughness, provided, however, that it is fine and without admixture of a trace of tin or other metal. SMALL buttons of fused tantalum have been produced by arc fusion in a vacuum, by drawing an arc between sticks of pressed tantalum and a tantalum-faced water-cooled copper block. However, ingots of appreciable size can be produced only by the heat-treatment of bars pressed from powder. The following outline covering the production of finished bars of tantalum by the methods of powder metallurgy is also used for the production of columbium, taking into account the difference in the melting points of these two metals. PRESSING THE POWDER With possibly a few exceptions, a pressing operation is one of the essential steps in the practice of powder metallurgy. In fact, the author's experience with a number of high-melting-point metals and with numerous types of hard carbide compositions has led him to believe that this operation is often one of the most important in the entire process, and frequently one of the most difficult to carry out in a satisfactory manner. Defects due to improper pressing can readily lead to a defective finished product. It is the author's opinion that rarely is a bar or other article pressed from metal powder in such a way that all parts of the piece are uniformly pressed. The nearest approach to uniformity of pressing is possibly attained when the powder is contained in a flexible receptacle, such as rubber, and is pressed under a liquid by hydrostatic pressure. However, this method is not generally applicable. Hydraulic pressing in steel dies where one or two punches are forced into the die must usually be resorted to. As the pressure in such a die is built up, the powder begins to cling to the walls of the die with a tenacity dependent upon the nature of the powder, and this results in a bridging action, so that the layers of powder adjacent to the moving punch are pressed more heavily than those further removed in the mass. Frequently, as the pressure is carried higher, there may be a mass slippage of the powder upon itself, with the result that slip cracks are formed within the pressed

The southwestern Illinois communities of Belleville and Maryville lie within the greater metropolitan area surrounding St. Louis. Missouri. They also lie within that part of the Illinois coal basin where the Number 6 coalbed has been mined for more than a century. About half the coal was left as pillars to support the ground surface. Years later, however, damaging movements are affecting buildings, streets, and public utilities in some areas. They are generally believed to be related to abandoned mine workings. The threat of continued or increasing incidence of damage raises the need to explore other subsidence-control measures for protecting affected areas with high population density. Because of experience gained in a subsidence-control program of backfilling abandoned coal mines in the Applachian region and in Rock Springs, Wyoming, the Bureau of Mines was called upon to investigate the subsidence occurrences at Belleville and Maryville, and recommend protective measures. Funds ware appropriated for the Bureau to initiate subsidence-control projects at two residential sites in Belleville and one in Maryville. Subsurface investigation of the sites by diamond core drilling revealed two conditions that differ from those encountered at most sites of previous subsidence-control projects. The mine workings were found to be dry and the mine floor consisted of soft underclay which characteristically loses strength with increase of moisture. It had been anticipated that water would have percolated into the mine workings at one .or more of the sites through cracks resulting from subsidence. Under such conditions Bureau engineers believed that injection of mine waste by the pumped; slurry technique3 would provide support and stabilize any movements initiated by the softening of the clay. With discovery that the underclay deposits at the three sites have apparently not been exposed to water since the mines were operating, hydraulic backfilling of any type was considered inadvisable on the basis of present knowledge. To avoid introducing water, a portable pneumatic system is being devised for injecting minus 0.01 27 m (1/2 in.) mine waste into the mine workings. Machines for pneumatic backfilling have been used in Europe not only for subsidence protection but also for strata control, for reducing spontaneous combustion and methane accumulation, and as a means of waste disposal. The Bureau experimented with a pneumatic machine in the Northern anthracite field of Pennsylvania in the 1950's. Previously pneumatic machines have been installed in active mine workings discharging from horizontal pipelines which conveyed air- borne material into rooms to be filled. In the present adaptation to abandoned mines, the machine and air compressor will be operating at the surface, to impel material vertically down injection boreholes with sufficient air pressure to disperse fill material laterally in mine workings at the base of injection holes. Large diameter access and ventilation boreholes will be provided at one site for entry into mine workings to observe backfilling progress. The Belleville and Maryville projects are part of the Mined Land Demonstration Program of the Bureau of Mines. The Illinois State Geological Survey and Department of Mines and Minerals are furnishing technical support.

The petroleum industry includes varied and extensive operations required to supply increasing quantities of refined petroleum products and natural gas that are essential for the economic progress of an expanding population Petroleum has provided the power for the transformation from the "horse and buggy days" to the age of jets and space exploration, and for the remarkable improvement in productivity per worker in agriculture and manufacturing. Without increasing quantities of oil and gas, the world would face painful readjustments to more expensive forms of energy and lower standards of living Petroleum operations start with exploration, development, and production activities that supply the basic crude oil and natural gas Pipelines, ships, barges, and trucks first transport the raw materials to processing centers and then move the finished products to the ultimate consumers. Processing plants extract liquids from natural gas and refineries convert crude oil into a wide range of products These products include transportation fuels, feedstocks for conversion into numerous products (such as fabrics, rubber, and plastics), light fuels for heating, lubricants, and heavy residual materials (industrial fuel oil, asphalt, and coke) The final activity of wholesale distribution and retail marketing moves products into millions of homes, farms, industrial plants, and motor vehicles The use of coal exceeded that of oil and gas until 1946 in the United States and until 1968 in the rest of the world. However, oil and gas have proved to be such convenient and attractively priced fuels that they now supply three-fourths of the total commercial energy (including coal, hydroelectric, and nuclear power) used in North America and more than one-half in the rest of the world. LARGE SCALE OF OPERATIONS By the beginning of 1970, world crude oil production exceeded 43 million bbl daily, -equivalent to more than 2200 million tpy In addition, natural gas and the liquids recovered from processing natural gas supply about 40% as much energy as crude oil Production of oil and gas provide by far the highest value of all mining operations. IT has been known for a number of years that the addition of certain alkaline-earth and rare-earth metals to nickel-chromium base electric resistance alloys causes marked increase in their oxidation resistance as measured in an intermittent oxidation test similar to the ASTM—B 76-39 test. However, the mechanism whereby such additions confer protection is still unknown. On the basis of the experimental observation that the increase in life in intermittent tests of nickel-base alloys is proportional to the atomic radius of the added element, Hessen-bruchl has proposed that the added metal ions occupy holes in the oxide lattice which prevent diffusion of nickel ions in the oxide. Horn2 has postulated that the effect of such additions is to accelerate the rate of diffusion of chromium atoms in the metal and thus to favor the formation of Cr2O3 scales. Hickman and Gulbransen3 concluded from electron diffraction observation that the addition of the elements in question results in the formation of a barrier to the diffusion of nickel ions to the surface. In connection with some experiments conducted to develop a test for the resistance to oxidation of alloys in massive form under conditions of intermittent heating and cooling, some features of the oxidation of nickel-chromium base alloys were revealed which may serve to elucidate the mechanism of protection conferred by rare-earth and alkaline-earth elements. Specimens of cylindrical shape 0.360 in. diam x 0.37 in. long were placed in alumina thimbles and inserted into and withdrawn from a Globar-heated furnace operating at 2150°F at 7.5-min intervals. The weight of oxygen absorbed as well as the weight of oxide spalled were measured at intervals. With the particular experimental conditions used, the specimens in a 7.5-min cycle were at temperature for 2 min which corresponds to the heating time of the ASTM test. The weight changes of similar specimens under conditions of continuous heating in air at 2150°F were also measured. The specimens after oxidation were examined metal- lographically and samples of the spalled oxide collected for X-ray diffraction identification of the phases. The specimens used were from the same lot of material used by Hickman and Gulbransen3 and had the compositions shown in table 1. Included in table I are results of ASTM life tests on the materials in the form of wires. These materials, their composition and the ASTM life test data thereon were all supplied by F. E. Bash of the Driver-Harris Co. It may be noted that alloy 13246 of 80 pct nickel, 20 pct chromium nominal composition showed the shortest life in the ASTM test; alloy 12246 with the addition of small amounts of the elements zirconium, calcium, and aluminum, intermediate life; and alloy 12046 with the further addition of silicon, the longest life. In fig. 1 are shown the results of intermittent oxidation tests made on bulk specimens at 2150°F as well as continuous tests conducted at the same temperature. Duplicate tests were made on each specimen. The ordinate scale, inches of metal oxidized, was derived from the experimentally observed weight gain of oxygen by assuming the scale to be entirely Cr2O3. The Chairman.—Mr. Earle Smith has kindly offered to make some remarks in connection with segregation in the product, Mr. Smith: E. C. Smith,* Cleveland, Ohio—I will start this Off by a story oF the code days of the American Iron and Steel Institute. In those days, Republic did not have a big strip mill, and the question came up of the check analysis of rimmed steel. I suggested that they let me be the chairman of the Committee on Accumulating the Information on the Variation of the Composition of the Ingots of Rimmed Steel. Somebody wanted to know why I wanted to be the chairman. I said, "we don't make any of the big ingots of rimmed steel, and no matter who makes them they are so bad that you don't dare publish the information. So if 1 collect it and hide it you can't charge me with having done anything that really disrupted the commercial situation." So, everybody furnished me with a rather complete story as to the horrible variations in big rimmed ingots. I took it out to my house and put it away, and it is still there. Now, segregation in the big ingot is no longer an "academic " matter as far as I am concerned. I am in a situation like that of the German who was told in 1956 about the coming war. He said: "until it is your throat that is going to be cut, you don't pay any attention to what is happening to the otherman." 'That is the way with the problem that we have in front of us. Recently I have been told that the 'Omptroller was questioning the payment for certain articles of stamped steel that had been made from rimmed steel, because upon check analysis of the rimmed steel it had been determined that these stamped articles were nut within the compositions that were included in the specification, and therefore he as the camptroller had no alternative. It was not meeting the specification; therefore, no payment. So I I say to all of you: You can very seriously consider this matter of segregation now and on into the future on the basis of the fact that it is actually going to cost your companies, which are making these products, money unless there is some new idea about the infallibility of quantitative , chemists who analyze some of these products or lawyers who read specifications, I don't know which man is going to be the major factor in the future. if the National Bureau of Standards could in some way show the specification writers the variation between good chemists analyzing for That they expect to be umpire eel. the writers would certainly realize that some of the to to which we have calmly signed our names as being O.K. are— well, as one man said to me, they might be filled by the devil, and they certainly could be filled by the Lord, but they could not he me by mankind. I would like to inject two or three things into a segregation study which I Want you to think about, because 1 would be a little surprised if there is very much discussion of them, In the first place, we generslly make steel in the United States in the basic open hearth, and I do not think there has bee,, nearly enough consideration given to segregation German the bath before it moves into the ladle. I am sure that any of the people who handled the 9400 series of the NE series when it contained the 0,60 per cent silicon have more respect than they had previously for the segregation that is within, the ladle; that is, before the metal reaches the ingot mold, the frozen ingots and the segregation in them. The last crop of graduates from our colleges and universities who sought employment in the mineral industries found that they needed to hustle to find a job. There was no longer a list of waiting employers to choose from. Some of them became discouraged and drifted into other fields; many are still looking for employment. Word has gotten around that there are no jobs available in the mineral industries, and enrollment in the various colleges of mines and mineral industries has started to drop. Even established professional men are finding themselves suddenly out of work because of unstable metal prices and rising costs. All these people-students beginning to search for a career, young engineers not yet established-face the same problem: "What is the future of the mineral industries, and what type of training will best qualify the scientist or engineer for this changing field?" This question was posed to a number of leaders in different phases of the industry. Their comments are summarized as a guide to those considering a career in the finding, extraction, or beneficiation of mineral products.

The theory of elasticity, the science of the strength of materials, and all our calculations regarding engineering structures are based on Hooke's law, that in loaded bodies the deformations are proportional to the load producing them. Without this law it would be impossible to design intelligently engineering structures such as bridges, frames, axles, etc. This being the case, the proportional limit,l that is, the point at which deformation ceases to be proportional to load, is the most important factor in engineering design. Further, the working fiber stress should be fixed in reference to the proportional limit instead of, as is usual, in reference to the ultimate strength. The incorrect use of the ultimate strength instead of the proportional limit in setting the working fiber stress is probably due to two reasons: (1) it is a more delicate operation to measure the proportional limit; (2) it is usually assumed, though incorrectly, that the proportional limit is determined by the ultimate strength. In Germany the poin't at which permanent set first appears is often taken instead of the proportional limit. The two points will coincide if Gerstner's law, that elastic deformations are proportional to the loads producing them both before and after permanent set, is true; and the limit of proportionality and the elastic limit or point of permanent set will both be represented on a stress-strain diagram, by the point at which the line ceases to be a straight line and becomes curved or changes its inclination. It is to be further noted that the difference in definition between proportional limit and elastic limit introduces a difference in methods of determination in the testing laboratory. The German method of determining the elastic limit by alternately loading and unloading the test specimen is a lengthy process and time has in itself a very considerable influence on the results of physical tests.

A conventional technique used to process auriferous sulfidic concentrates involves a pre-leach oxidative-roast step. The structural characteristics of the calcine have a strong influence on the eventual recovery of gold by cyanidation. Surface analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy and BET gas adsorption have been utilized to determine quantitatively the structural morphology of calcined pyrite and arsenopyrite samples in the range of 450 to 750 °C under an oxidizing atmosphere. In the case of. pyrite calcines a highly porous hematite product was found below 500 °C; at higher temperatures, a coarser oxide network , was observed. The surface area of these calcines was found to decrease sharply with increase in temperature. In contrast, the surface area of arsenopyrite calcines was found to follow a bimodal-type behavior with roasting temperature with maxima at 500 and 625 °C. In the case of pyritelarsenopyrite mixtures, the surface area was observed to increase dramatically as the content of pyrite increased. The appearance of pyrrhotite as an intermediate phase in the oxidation reactions is postulated to have important structural implications.

In view of the great importance of accurate knowledge respecting the chemistry of iron and steel, as related to their physical properties, I come before you with a paper showing the great mass of work which has been heretofore done on the subject. I have tabulated the more important data I bring at this time, so as to draw out the results clearly. This information is accessible to all who will seek for it. I have made it the basis of my own practice throughout, and such knowledge is undoubtedly the only foundation for the successful practice of metallurgy. As is well known the ordnance corps of our army, after 1841, made exhaustive experiments on the properties of cast-iron. The investigations were undertaken in order to obtain necessary information on the reorganization of the corps. I wish to call your attention to the results obtained by a comparison of the chemical and physical properties of cast-iron for guns, to describe certain characteristic peculiarities of steel, and to give a brief history of the chemical work relating to carbon in iron. IRMANN'S' discovery that extrusions of fine alumi-num-flake powders possess remarkable high-temperature strengths has led to the production of a new class of engineering materials whose properties are derived from a fine dispersion of oxide particles in a metallic matrix. The Pu-In phase diagram has been determined by thevmal, filtvation, micrographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. This alloy system is characterized by 1) limited solubility of indium (-2 at. pet) in 6 and e plutonium, 2) one eutectic, and 3) fizte intermediate phases. Of the latter, PuIn and PuIn3 melt con-gruently, and Pu31n, Pu31n5, and the high-temperatuve 7 solid solution are formed peritectically. The n phase decomposes eutectoidally into Pu3In and PuIn at 865°C. Although the 6 phase can readily be retained to room temperature, it is not thermo-dynamically stable below 300°C. The Pu-In system has been investigated at Los Alamos as part of a study of the alloys of plutonium with the group 111-B elements. Constitutional studies of the Pu-A1 and Pu-Ga systems have been reported earlier.'9' To date, published information on the constitution of Pu-In alloys covers only the identification of the intermediate phases Pu3In and PuIn3.3,4 EXPERIMENTAL The alloys were prepared from five different lots of plutonium and three different lots of indium. The principal impurities in the plutonium differed from lot to lot within the following limits (in ppm): iron, 30 to 80; nickel, 30 to 60; aluminum, 15 to 30; silicon, 20 to 145: thorium, 50 to 300; carbon, 75 to 335; and oxygen, 20 to 135. Spectroanalysis of the indium showed that two of the lots were 99.9 wt pct pure, and the third was 99.98 wt pct pure. The alloys, in the form of about 5-g buttons, were prepared by arc melting in conventional equipment. The components for each alloy were weighed to the nearest 0.1 mg. In most instances the weight losses during melting were negligible; therefore confirmatory chemical analyses were usually not made. A few results are given in Table I. Density measurements of the arc-cast buttons were made by the liquid displacement of bromoben-zene. Heat treating was done in muffle furnaces controlled to +2°C. The alloy buttons were wrapped in tantalum foil before being enclosed in evacuated clear silica capsules. As a precaution against breakage, each capsule was in turn placed in a silica tube closed with a refractory wool plug prior to being charged into the furnace. For a moderately fast quench of the alloys, the outer protection tubes containing the capsules were plunged into cold water. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) in racuo were performed at heating and cooling rates of about 1.5°C per min. Tantalum crucibles having inverted thermocouple wells were used for most of the analyses. It was found micrographically, however, that the liquid alloys containing more than about 35 at. pct In reacted with the tantalum, resulting in contamination of the surface of the alloy. A search for a more satisfactory crucible material was not successful: tungsten and yttria behaved comparably to tantalum; thoria, vitrified magnesia, and vitrified alumina severely contaminated the alloys. WORK was initiated several years ago at The Dow Chemical Company to determine the applicability of powder metallurgy processes to magnesium and its alloys. Although it was found possible to apply the normal techniques of compacting and sintering, it was discovered early that the technique of extrusion offered special promise. This technique and the alloys produced were therefore studied extensively, and the present paper is a partial report of those studies. It is expected that a second paper will discuss more extensively some of the alloy systems simply mentioned here. Although the literature on powder metallurgy is very extensive, there are only two articles dealing with magnesium13,14 and there is no reference to the direct extrusion of the powder of any metal without the preliminary step of compacting. Furthermore, no mention has been made of the possibility of designing alloys by the technique of powder extrusion, particularly alloys that cannot be made in any other way. Sauerwaldl3 discusses the extrusion of magnesium and aluminum powder to produce alloys containing nonequilibrium phases, but again he emphasizes the importance of pre-compacting before extrusion. There seems to be general agreement that some form of hot-pressing is essential to obtain in a compact the full theoretical density of the metal used.'-" The nearest approach to the technique of direct powder extrusion is that of extrusion of pre-sintered compacts,'-" for which the best review through 1944 is that by Kieffer and Hotop.11 Ensign* discussed a specialized technique of "extruding" already compacted and sintered gears for the purpose of sizing. Sauerwa1d13 discussed the compacting and extrusion of magnesium and magnesium-aluminum alloy band-saw chips. The properties of the extruded compacts were found to be comparable with those of extrusions prepared from solid billets. He also extruded a compacted mixture of magnesium and aluminum powder and found the properties to be somewhat different from those obtained on an extrusion made from a cast billet of the same composition. The second reference dealing specifically with the powder metallurgy of magnesium is Stern's patent," in which is described the extrusion of scrap chips and turnings following a hot-pressing and sintering step. Considerable emphasis in most of these articles is placed on the necessity of atmospheric protection to minimize the danger of oxidation. THE task of recovering most of the contents of an oil and gas reservoir economically presents many and varied problems. In order to attempt intelligently a solution to these problems, an understanding of fundamental physical laws is essential. As the pertinent facts needed in applying these laws to recovery problems are not readily obtainable, observation must be made and the data tabulated. Here, good judgment must be exercised, for at best the information is meager. The engineer is well fitted to undertake the task of solving this problem. In my opinion, the decision on the part of some production executives to allow the engineer to cope with the oil recovery situation and other problems, is an outstanding example of improvement in production methods. The executive head must make this decision or the qualified engineer will be working under a severe handicap with the present system of supervising the production of oil and gas. A qualified engineer should have not only the required technical training but also enough field experience to enable him to understand the difficulties encountered in producing oil and gas. Such a man tactfully cooperating with the practical oil man can greatly improve present methods of oil recovery. The realization that nature's forces have not been efficiently controlled in past recovery of petroleum deposits has recently brought distinct improvement in production methods. Papers are to be presented at this meeting discussing in detail improved methods of conserving gas in both flowing and pumping wells, and also methods of lifting oil after Nature's supply of gas has proved inadequate. The application of back pressure to producing oil wells has not, to my knowledge, been extensively applied in Oklahoma or Kansas up to the present time. Most of the flowing wells are allowed to flow through the casing until the rock pressure has been dissipated. However, some flowing wells have been tubed before the well stopped flowing through the casing. Recording pressure-gages can be installed to study well performance.
