The authors of T.P. 4179 have conducted a large number of experimental water floods, and the data are reported in a very clear manner. These data show significant variations of residual oil saturation with changes in wettability, interfacial tension, flooding rate, and oil-water viscosity ratio. Furthermore, some of the data obtained cover a range of variables not previously reported in the literature. It is our opinion that at least some of the observed variation in oil recovery can be obtained only in floods made under conditions identical with those used by the authors. There are other systems which may be said to have the same wettability, but which exhibit an entirely different qualitative dependence of oil recovery on the experimental variables. In this regard, we would like to direct attention to several items which we feel are not given sufficient consideration in the paper. The first of these items has to do with wetting equilibrium. A survey of the current literature will reveal that little is known, and even less is understood, about wetting equilibrium. This is particularly true of the relation between contact angle measurements made under static conditions, and the wettability existing under the dynamic conditions of floods carried out at relatively high rates. We feel that this is a very important consideration, particularly in the floods the authors performed under what they consider to be "water-wet" conditions. It is our opinion that wetting equilibrium did not exist in these floods, except possibly at the very lowest rates. This opinion is in part based on some flooding tests we have made which are very similar to some of those described by the authors. These floods were made in unconsolidated cores, 6 in. long and 13/4 in. in diameter, made up of carefully graded glass spheres of the approximate size of the sand grains used in the subject paper. The cores were mounted vertically, and distilled water was used to displace a refined oil equivalent to the authors Soltrol C. The glass spheres had previously been carefully cleaned so that they were strongly wet by the water. The floods were made with and without an interstitial water saturation. When interstitial water was present, the solid surfaces were mostly covered with water prior to injecting the flooding phase. Consequently, a condition very near wetting equilibrium existed throughout the flood. The data in Fig. A show that under these eircumstances, rate had no influence on residual oil at flood-out, over the range of rates studied. On the other hand, in the absence of interstitial water, the surfaces are all covered with oil before the displacement. To achieve wetting equilibrium the injected water must displace the oil from the surfaces themselves. This is not a fast process. Therefore, the effective dynamic wetting condition in floods of this type must depend upon the flooding rate. When the flood rate is very low, compared to the rate at which wetting equilibrium is attained, the residual oil saturation at flood-out is essentially the same as the residual obtained when interstitial water is present. This is shown in Fig. A, and occurs because the dynamic wetting conditions are the same in both cases. However, at moderately high flooding rates, the rate has an important bearing on the amount of oil recovered because in this case the attainment of surface equilibrium is the slow step. We believe that, in the absence of an interstitial water saturation, oil recovery varies with rate because of the reasonably slow approach to wetting equilibrium which occurs during the displacement. In fact, as the rate is increased, the oil recovery performance indicates the core is becoming progressively less water-wet. At the highest rate there is even considerable simultaneous production of oil and water after breakthrough. For a great many years fusion welding has been used in and around petroleum refineries, but it is only within six or seven years that the more important pressure vessels have been constructed by this process, because before that time the properties of fusion welds would not with-stand such rigorous service. Since the adoption of fusion welding for the construction of this equipment, the refiner has required pressure vessels suitable for operation over a very wide range of conditions. On the one hand, vessels must operate at extremely high temperatures, in the range of 950° to 1000° F., and on the other vessels must be suitable for operation at sub-zero temperatures down as low as -75° F. Also, vessels are required suitable for operation at pressures upwards of 1000 lb. per sq. in., and as low as a 29-in. vacuum. In addition, vessels are required to withstand the attack of very corrosive mediums. It has been a rather difficult task for the fabricator to meet all of these require-ments, but as a result of the extensive research carried on by steel manu-facturers and several fabricators of class I vessels, practically all of these demands have been met. In order to meet the refiners' requirements for this wide range of conditions, the fabricator has worked closely with the metallurgist. This has enabled him to choose the proper base metal for each service condition, but it has been the fabricator's problem to develop a welding rod and welding technique, as well as a heat-treatment, that would produce in the welded vessel characteristics in and around the weld comparable to those in the base metal. Where corrosion is not a serious problem, and where the operating temperatures are not too high, ordinary carbon steel has served very well. But when corrosion is serious, and/or when the temperatures are either very high or very low, it is necessary to use some form of alloy steel to give satisfactory service.

Operations at the cement plant of the Permanente Corporation, in the hills about 45 miles south of San Francisco and 12 miles west of San Jose, are interesting to the members because of the adoption of modern hydrometallurgical methods for handling and beneficiating raw materials. Closed-circuit grinding, classification, hy-droseparation, flotation, agitation, and thickening are familiar terms at this cement plant. These methods make it possible to process refractory limestone into suitable materials for the mallufacture of modern cements. Construction of the plant, having originally a design capacity of 7000 bbl. of cement per day, was started in June 1939, and the first clinker was ground on the following Christmas Day. At present the capacity is about 12,000 bbl. of finished cement per 24 hr., most of the production being low-heat cement. † About 3I30 tons of limestone, 620 tons of clay and I00 tons of gypsum are required daily for this output. Occasionally iron oxide is added to the clay to obtain the desired composition. This, together with the gypsum, is purchased from outside sources. up to the present time, the ccrporation has produced low-heat, normal, moderate-heat, moderate-sulphate-resisting, high-early-strength, oil-well, modihed-oil-well, and plastic cements. Most of the present production is for Shasta Dam, near Red- ding, Calif., the total demand being 5,800,000 bbl. of cement. THE requirements of the standard specifications under which Portland cement is sold have materially increased within the past 10 years, but practically all companies are now furnishing cement better than these requirements; in some cases exceeding them by nearly 100 per cent. From a sales standpoint, it is desirable to have a product that is uniform to a high degree and free from occasional quality troubles. A failure in quality, even if it affects only a few hundred barrels out of a yearly output of a million or more, is apt to be talked about in the trade and to affect the salability of the entire output. For these reasons, there has recently been great activity along the lines of quality control and improvement; and some of the most interesting problems of the industry are in this field. From the manufacturing standpoint, the quality of cement is chiefly a matter of uniform and proper chemical composition of the raw mix fed to the kilns plus proper burning in the kilns; the fineness to which the cement is ground, the proportions of gypsum, the method of seasoning, and the like are contributory factors. Uniform chemical composition of the raw mix has been one of the most difficult problems to solve. Most plants will use from 1000 to 3000 tons of rock per day and in but few cases is this material as it lies in the quarry even approximately uniform in composition. The problem, then, is to quarry and mix this raw material in such a manner that every handful passing through the kilns will have practically the same analysis as every other handful. To accomplish this purpose there are two methods of preparation: the wet process and the dry.

This paper is concerned with the effect of propping-agent concentration on flow capacity of a fracture in the case in which there is embedment of the propping agent. Previous published studies have shown definitely that there is a relationship between fracture flow capacity and prop ping-agent concentration, and it has been shown that the theoretical results are confirmed by laboratory experiments. The problem of directly finding sand concentration for maximum flow capacity of a sand-propped fracture is solved, and formulas and charts are given to obtain this concentration under various conditions of effective overburden pressure, medium sand-grain diameter and rock properties. It is shown that, for the same effective overburden pressure and the same rock characteristics, optimum sand concentration in pounds per gallon does not depend on medium sand diameter. For conditions met in bydraulic fracturing operations, it is found that sand concentration in grains per square inch for maximum flow capacity varies within a wide range of values; this indicates the convenience of using data of fracturing pressure and rock characteristics for calculating sand concentration in order to achieve the best results in fracture treatments. INTRODUCTION It has been pointed out in the published literature1 that one important factor controls the success of a hydraulic fracturing operation — the propping of the fracture. The main effect of the propping agent is to hold the fracture open by means of the reaction forces that oppose the pressure due to the overburden. It is assumed in this paper that the propping agent is sand, that the grains are spherical and uniform in size, and that this sand is distributed in a monolayer in the fracture. The existence of a sand concentration value for maximum fracture flow capacity has been recognized since the publication of one of the first studies on the subject.2 In the reference cited, flow capacity was assumed to be proportional to the cube of the fracture volume per square inch not filled by sand. The obtained experimental curves relating to flow capacity and sand concentration had the same appearance as the curves obtained with the afore-mentioned assumption. Recent work3 has shown that fracture permeability, in the case of a monolayer, can be calculated accurately by means of a modified Kozeny-Cacman equation; thus, it can be shown that fracture pqmeability is a function of free volume in the fracture and of the rock and sand wet surfaces. The flow capacity of a fracture is dependent on the permeability of the fracture and on the fracture width. If all excessive quantity of sand is present in the fracture, its width may be large but its permeability i:; low due to the greater flow resistance; too few grains of sand per square inch are present in the fracture, sand embedment in the rock is greater and the width becomes small enough to appreciably decrease the rate of flow. To determine optimum conditions of flow, therefore, it is necessary to know the dependence of fracture width on density or concentration of propping agent. This relation is given in a study4 in which the approach to embedment is similar to the one made in a penetration hardness test of metal. With the equacions presented by Darin and Huitt,3 the number of sand grains per square inch that results in maxirnum fracture capacity can be determined graphically by plotting fracture capacity vs sand concentration. Since the relationship between fracture capacity and sand concentration may be considered known, one is led to formulate the analytical problem of directly determining sand concentration for maximum fracture flow capacity, in order to study the effect of the various quantities that come into the process. The solution of this problem appears to be interesting both from the viewpoint of fluid mechanics and from the practical viewpoint of oil production in hydraulic fracturing treatments. There is no field of human thought or endeavor which does not owe much to the past. Yet, surrounded by the prodigious scientific and technological achievements of our day, it is all too easy to forget the extent to which we have stood on the shoulders of giants. The coking industry of the United States is now a little more than one hundred years old. As with the American nation itself, the earliest beginnings of the industry owe a great deal to British influences, and its development owes much to those influences of continental Europe. No serious contribution to the history of coking in the United States can be written, therefore, which does not mention the work of the pioneers of the Old World. It is believed that the use of metallurgical coke dates back to antiquity. The fact that certain coals would soften under the influence of heat to yield a porous solid was known to the ancients of China and India, where a very crude coking operation was carried out by simply setting fire to piles of coal. After active combustion had started, turf or wet straw was used to seal off the pile. The coke obtained was used to forge iron and steel implements and weapons. Perhaps the earliest reference to the coking phenomenon is to be found in the writings of Theophrastus, pupil of Aristotle. In his History of Stones, which was written in or about the year 371 B.C., there appears the following observation. "But the Lipara stone empties itself, as it were, in burning and becomes like the pumice, changing at once both its colour and density; for before burning it is black, smooth and compact.... Certain stones there are about Tetras, in Sicily, which is over against Lipara, which empty themselves in the same manner in the fire." The first comparatively modern reference to coke is to be found in a recommendation for carbonization made in 1584 by Julius, Duke of Braunschweig-Luneberg, owner of the Hohenbuchen mine in the Harz district of Germany. In 1587, Sir Francis Willoughby of. Wollaton, England wrote: "There are twenty rooks broughte into charcoal and laid up in store." A rook of coal was equivalent to some 25 tons, and the coking would probably have been carried out in a manner similar, to that used for the production of charcoal. In 1589, Thomas Proctor attempted to carbonize coal, and in the year 1590 an English patent was granted to John Thornborough, Dean of York, in order that he might "purify pit coal and free it of its offensive smell". Forging under the hydraulic press, which was introduced by Haswell in the year 1861, at the machine shops of the Imperial State Railway Company of Austria, has since been greatly improved, so that at the present time there are very few parts of machines which cannot be produced in this way, and at no greater cost than iron castings. The process is now used at Vienna chiefly for such parts of locomotives as cross-heads, link-bars, axle-box frames, etc., especially where the form is intricate, and there are many angles and projections. These objects weigh from 50 to 150 lb. or more, and it is claimed for them that they are not only much cheaper than ordinary forgings, but are much more regular in form and stronger. The results which Mr. Haswell has attained, after years of patient experimenting, were well shown in the Austrian Department of the Vienna Exhibition by a collection of the pressed objects in iron and steel, just as they left the moulds, with some of them cut asunder longitudinally and the surfaces etched, so as to show the internal structure or direction of the grain. Through the courtesy of Mr. Haswell and his son I saw the hydraulic presses in full operation at the works, drawing down large Bessemer ingots, cutting them up into blocks of convenient size, and forming various park of locomotives. They have two large hydraulic presses in use; the largest, with a piston 24 inches diameter, gives 1200 tons pressure, and the second, with an 18-inch piston, gives 600 tons pressure. The pressure in the pumps is 600 atmospheres. The action is vertical; the piston descends upon the work, and for forging ingots is armed with a hammer-like head. An ingot of No. 7 soft Bessemer steel, which was forged in my presence, weighed 2030 lbs. One end being placed upon the anvil, the piston is brought slowly down and crowded into the mass as if it were putty or dough, forcing it each way, but chiefly in the direction of the length of the ingot, this being the narrowest section of the anvil and hammer. The piston is then raised and the ingot is moved forward for a second squeeze, and so on, until the first half of the ingot has been reduced in thickness, when it is turned on edge and the operation is repeated. THE search for oil has required, and without a doubt supplies, a tremendous amount of information on the structure, composition, physical properties, and history of sedimentary rocks. The earliest and most complete source of knowledge is the sample or core of the rock itself, the uses of which are well known. The purpose of this paper is primarily to discuss a new method for obtaining these cores, and to illustrate its use in connection with electrical logs. Most cores have been obtained through a special adaptation of rotary drilling, and the results have been remarkably good, considering the mechanical problems involved. Unfortunately, because of the time and expense, this method cannot be used for the entire length of the drill hole. Even though ingenious contrivances have been evolved in order to reduce the time spent in round trips, such as wire-line coring equipment, mechanical coring still remains too expensive to be carried out con-tinuously. In practice, therefore, one is finally compelled to estimate the probable depths of the more interesting horizons and, allowing a wide margin of safety, to core through those sections only. It is true also that interesting results have been obtained by examining the cuttings brought to the surface by the mud circulated in the well during the process of drilling. Be that as it may, the inescapable fact remains that key horizons may be passed inadvertently, for one reason or another, while the drilling operations are being performed. The only continuous record of the formations encountered is that furnished by electrical surveys. Obviously, it would be desirable to make the electrical survey first and to take the samples from the wall of the hole according to the indications on the electrical log. In this way, it would be possible to core only the exact sections desired, eliminating the otherwise inevitable estimates as to the point at which to start coring, and thereby reducing to a minimum this expensive operation. At the same time this method would provide a maximum' of useful samples.

Runding the bottom corner of the West Africa11 hump, one hovers off the coast of the tiny Republic of Liberia. But not for long-as Portuguese navigators, Blackbirders, and Farrell Line captains have learned. The ponderous swell of the Atlantic is driven by an on-shore wind that never dies. As remorseless as the Atlantic chewing away at the unbroken shoreline, is the country beyond-West Africa, where white meets black, where desert blends to bush to impenetrable jungle, where elephants chomp the foliage of young trees. This is a land from which the tsetse fly has driven the cattle, and the root crops grow big and voluptuous above the ground and are shrunken and barren of nutrient below. This is the environment of Liberia which is elbowing an iron ore market for itself on crowded shelves. Liberia is an anomaly in Africa. It was the first republic on the continent in modern times, having been established in 1848. While most of Africa was benefiting from the investment of foreign capital under colonial regimes, Liberia was going it alone. To be sure, Liberia was aware of foreign activity as hunks of territory were lopped off by neighboring French and English colonies. Today the country is about 43,000 sq miles, the size of Tennessee, which, in the language of exploration men, is a workable size unit.

Laboratory flood pot testing of California sands has progressed to a considerable extent in the past 18 months. Flood evaluations have been carried out on over 200 large core samples. Many of these were heavy oil sands of high permeability and completely unconsolidated in nature. The oil frequently formed a bank, though some of the oil was recovered in the subordinate phase of the flood, by viscous drag. Flood pot recoveries as high as 1400 bbl/acre ft have been recorded. Reservoir analysis suggests a conformance factor of 0.4 to reduce laboratory recovery to probable field practice. Oils with viscosities up to 1800 cp have been successfully handled in flood pot evaluations. The shallow, loose sands are not well adapted to the application of- high pressures to offset the high viscosities. INTRODUCTION Secondary recovery may be said to have started 60 years ago when accidental floods occurred in the Bradford sand in Pennsylvania. About 1921 artificially conducted water drives came into extensive use and since that time the great Bradford field has been almost completely subjected to water flooding. During the last 30 years, most of the known medium and deeper production in California has been discovered and is being exploited by primary recovery methods supplemented in some instances by high pressure gas injection. The California area is just beginning to feel the need for secondary recovery in view of an unprecedented market demand and the rapidly rising cost of new pool discoveries. With the presently recognized desirability of secondary recovery in California, there must also be appreciated a number of serious differences between the water flooding problems here as compared to the territory east of the Rockies. California sands are generally thicker, and are frequently soft and argillaceous. The oils are often heavier and asphaltic. Much of the oil is below 15°API, occurs at shallow depth, is cool and free from appreciable dissolved gas, which results in relatively high reservoir oil viscosity. Secondary recovery is particularly beneficial where primary recovery has been poor and where no natural water drive exists. These conditions apply particularly to the heavy, shallow, clean production from soft, often argillaceous California sands so abundantly found at depths less than 1500 feet. Often, too, there is a totally insufficient supply of water of satisfactory quality to inject at a reasonable cost. Also, the crude oils are priced far below the premium Bradford crude. Although these and a number of minor problems beset the operator desirous of starting secondary recovery, great progress has been made in the past few years in finding how to adapt previous Mid-Continent and Eastern experience to water flooding in California. There are about nine projects for subsurface injection of water which can be said to classify as secondary recovery operations. Subsurface water disposal would so classify when the sand receiving the water is a nearby oil producer, as is often the case. When water is injected subsurface into a barren sand, the operation does not classify as secondary recovery. Several of the most active operators avail themselves extensively of preliminary engineering and laboratory work to guide their decisions, while others enter small scale flooding operations directly in the field. It is the laboratory work pertinent to several of the California secondary recovery projects that this paper discusses. PURPOSES OF LABORATORY FLOODING TESTS Experience in areas where water flood operations have been carried out has indicated that careful engineering planning is an important requisite for subsequent economically successful field operation. Floods that fail are more frequently those where operations were instigated without a prior engineering investigation to determine the effectiveness of the injection fluid as an oil displacing medium. Laboratory data are essential in the evaluation of an oil property for secondary recovery possibilities. Success or failure of secondary operations can under certain special circumstances be determined directly by cores and their subsequent routine analysis. This is particularly the case where flushing of the cores in the course of coring is negligible and where the results of the analysis can be compared with existing secondary recovery operations. Where these conditions cannot be' fulfilled, the application of core analysis is more limited. In such event, the results obtained by water flooding core samples in the laboratory have been found to be of prime importance. Cores may be flooded "raw" as taken from the well or in the event flushing and depletion of the cores in the process of drilling are major factors the fluid content may be artificially restored prior to the flooding. Laboratory studies should also be made to determine the suitability of the water selected for injection. Thus interaction between injected and formation water may cause precipitates to be formed which may plug the sand. Even more important, especially to California operations, is the possibility of the hydration of formation clays by the injection water. The aims of flood pot and associated tests are basically to determine the residual oil saturation after flood, the water-oil throughput ratio and to establish whether an oil bank is formed. Additional information which can be obtained from flood pot tests pertains to the pressure differential required to effect displacement, the relative permeability to oil in the oil bank and the relative permeability to water in the watered out region behind the bank.

A froth flotation unit was added to the DeBardeleben Coal Corporation's Empire washer at Empire, Alabama, in the fall Of I94O following an investigation of possible ways and means of recovering coal values from settling-tank overflow or slurry. Officials of the DeBardeleben corporation hoped that some practical and reasonably economical way could be found for recovering fine coal from overflow water, although there had as yet been very little progress along this line in the Alabama coal fields. The Bureau of Mines was asked to cooperate in the project through its Southern Experiment Station, at University, Alabama. This paper presents a brief description of the process and the installation that resulted from the investigation of the overflow water or slurry problem at the Empire mine. The experimental data include' as a Part of this Paper were obtained during the course of the investigation in 1940 Since that time, however, the flotation unit has been running more or less continuously without significant operational changes and is still Performing pretty much in accordance with the data obtained in 1940. Flowsheet at Empire and Type of Coal Treated The Empire mine is developed on the Black Creek bed near the the border of the Warrior field. The coal in this bed is extremely low-ash and although there is an almost complete absence of bone coal and partings, the bed is so thin that, with mechanized mining, a high percentage of rock from roof and floor inevitably gets into the run-of-mine coal. The thickness of the Black Creek bed throughout the part of the Warrior field in which it is mined extensively is rarely over 30 in. and probably would average about 25 in, the coal is of the high-volatile A rank and of excellent quality, but as a result of admixture of roof and floor material, the run-of-mine product usually contains I ; to 20 pct rock by weight. he following is a proximate analysis on an "as-received " basis of a typical seam sample from the Empire mine:' moisture, 3.0 pet; volatile, 34.6 fixed carbon 58.3; ash, 4.1 This sample shelved 15,070 Btu per pound and 0.9 pct sulphur on a moisture-and-ash-free basis. When phosphate mining operations first commenced in Tennessee the loss of both high- and low-grade material was large, because of the crude hand methods employed. Practically all rock smaller than 2 in. was thrown back into the pits and covered with the overburden of subsequent openings. With the advent of mechanical washers and other mining machinery, together with the abolishing of the contract system, the waste has been steadily diminished, until at present only the finest sand is being rejected; and even this is not lost, for in the majority of cases the water, slime, and sand from the washers are run into large settling ponds where practically all of the phosphate-bearing material is caught and stored for future use, or until it is profitable to ship lower grades. The latest equipment used to recover the fine and lower-grade phosphate sand includes Dorr thickeners, settling tanks, Dorr classifiers and settling ponds served by locomotive cranes with clam-shell buckets, making it possible to save material averaging as fine as 200 mesh. TO attempt saving finer material would necessitate a different type of drier, which might be patterned after the multiple-deck roasters. The present tailing runs from 15 to 25 per ccnt. of available phosphate, which, howrever, as mentioned before, does not represent a total loss to possible future operations. The demand of the consumer is the greatest factor in regulating the recovery at present. In the mining of blue rock, which does not require washing treatment, the main waste material is the capping of low-grade kidney formation, generally used for backfilling of the rooms. By reason of the introduction of improved methods in the early stages and the re-mining of territory skimmed over at the start, at the present time the net result of all operations is a comparatively small loss. One of the largest temporary losses in the industry occurs in the Florida pebble district where the recovery of phosphate runs about 25 per cent. WHEN a subject, such as the manufacture and service of chilled car wheels, as has been fruitlessly discussed for ten or fifteen years, it is difficult to revive interest and action by the mere repetition of statements and arguments that have been made before. And when a situation involves serious responsibilities for conditions that have grown up under circumstances beyond the control of any particular individuals or authority, it is even more difficult to deal with. But there is one phase of every subject that need not involve these particular points if presented in a, proper manner; and that is, " the future state." I will try to present the subject of this communication from the latter standpoint and with the hope that all of those interested will feel disposed to give the matter attention from the basis that it is a, vitally important one to all that travel on railroads, whether as employees or officials, or as dependent on those in charge of the operation, or in the matter of materials and equipment used. The conditions of chilled wheel service have been changed so radically in the past ten or fifteen years by the use of freight cars of 40 and 50 tons capacity, that it is fair to say in the interest of all concerned in the use and in the manufacture of such wheels, that the increased strains and loads have been quite sufficient to account for much of the service results that have transpired. That proper provision was not made for increased possibilities of strength and wear, in fact that previous factors of the kind were allowed to deteriorate, is no proof that such wheels cannot be made equal to heavy service conditions as shown in the data given herein.

HISTORY. THE use of iron for the precipitation of copper was known at least as early as the fifteenth century. Both Paracelsus and Basil Valentine refer to it in their writings, as early as 1500 A. D. It was used in Peru for this purpose prior to 1637, and at Rio Tinto, Spain, as early as the sixteenth century. The statement has been made repeatedly that in the early history of the mining industry at Butte, the practicability of this method of recovering copper from solution was overlooked, and that enormous quantities of copper-bearing water were allowed to go to waste, the copper in which might easily have been recovered at small cost; and .that this oversight on the part of the mine operators was due to ignorance of this method of recovering copper. As a matter of fact, very little copper-bearing mineral was encountered in the mines of Butte until a depth of 400 or 500 ft. bad been reached, and in many cases much greater depths were necessary to reach the copper-bearing zone. The water encountered in the upper levels (although in most cases quite highly mineralized) contained little or no copper, and it was only after considerable areas of copper-bearing ore' had been uncovered and developed that copper sulphate began to appear in the mine water in any considerable quantity. In fact, the first water that was observed to contain copper carried it in such small amounts as to be of little or no importance. It was only after years of underground work had opened extensive areas of stopes, drifts, and other underground workings, these being subsequently filled with waste, nearly all of which contained small copper values, which became oxidized by exposure to the air and were acted upon by the slowly percolating mineral water, that the recovery of copper from mine water became commercially important.

DURING the heating of cold-worked nickel silver, the tendency of the material to crack is well known. The present research deals with this question, and may conveniently be divided into the following sections: Changes in these alloys during heating and cooling, determination of the temperature at which cracking occurs, effect of grain size, quenching cracks, methods of overcoming annealing cracking. The work is far from complete, in particular the influence of impurities on this tendency has not been investigated, but the results so far obtained lead to certain definite conclusions, which are of theoretical and practical importance. CHANGES IN ALLOYS DURING HEATING AND COOLING During the annealing of many metals at a temperature just below that at which recrystallization sets in, there is evidence of some change, the effect of which is to harden and embrittle the material. This effect has been most clearly demonstrated in the cases of aluminum, copper, brass, and nickel silver, and appears to be a common property of cold-worked metals and alloys, or, at any rate, the non-ferrous ones. The effect would obviously offer an explanation for certain types of annealing cracking, but the trouble is so much more common in the nickel silvers than in the other alloys that some special cause should be looked for. There is, however, fairly good reason for believing that similar cracking may occur in some of the brasses; D. Bunting suggests that the a brasses toward the saturation limit are subject to a transformation closely allied in nature to that known to occur in the nickel silvers at around 320° C. Although the existence of this critical temperature range was known, it did not necessarily follow that this transformation was responsible for the trouble under investigation, so the first portion of this paper deals with the attempts made to determine whether other critical changes might not occur in these alloys. ANY metal which contains even a small percentage of aluminum possesses certain peculiarities of appearance and properties which are exhibited both when the metal is melted and after it solidifies. Pure aluminum, or an alloy containing a small proportion of aluminum, can be melted without flux-except for a layer of charcoal-because a film of aluminum oxide and metal forms at the surface of melted aluminum. Although very thin, this film is air-proof, and it prevents the metal underneath from oxidizing. This oxidized film does not move easily on account of its toughness and high surface tension. One very important point in connection with this process of still casting has not been strongly enough stressed, namely, that the same kind of surface film with the same peculiarities forms over the surface of all melted alloys that contain even a small proportion of aluminum. Experienced foundrymen know how desirable it is to cast aluminum under its "skin" or under the surface of the film which tends to remain still. In the case of red copper, when in fusion, the surface shows pure copper only. This is due to the fact that liquid copper constantly absorbs the copper oxide which forms on the surface. By closely examining melting copper the oxide can be seen dissolving in the bath, and going into solution just as pulverized sugar dissolves in water. When copper is cast in the open, either in wire bars or cakes, the surface of metal exposed to the air is covered by a film of black, oxide that cannot be absorbed by the metal.

INTRODUCTION. THE crystalline belt of the Atlantic Seaboard, south of New York, attains its maximum breadth of 220 miles on the northern border of North Carolina; and in this State it is most widely characterized by the occurrence of gold in workable deposits. Half a dozen auriferous belts have been recognized by Nitze and Hanna.1 These are, in the main, coincident in position and trend with the NE.-SW. zones of metamorphic slates and schists, which, more than any other feature, give character to the geological map of North Carolina. The central gold-belts, accompanying the main zone of slates and associated igneous rocks, are much the more important and persistent, and may be regarded as continuous northward across Virginia and southward into South Carolina. Tile eastern belt, on the other band, is the shortest and, economically, one of the least important. Its extreme length does not exceed 25 miles, the narrow band of slaty rocks to which it belongs passing, both NE. and SW., beneath the coastal-plain formations. But, although limited in area and production, this belt is, perhaps, comparable with the central belts or any part of the sea-board crystallines in the variety of conditions under which the gold occurs. It lies chiefly in the NE. part of Franklin county and the NW. part of Nash county, on the watershed of Fishing creek and other tributaries of Tar river. The elevation is between 400 and 500 ft. ; and the Tertiary peneplain has here an exceptionally perfect development, the reliefs separating the slightly incised stream-courses consisting of broad, flat-topped peneplain remnants, bounded by gentle lateral slopes.

Future depletion performance and ultimate oil recovery from reservoirs producing under volumetric control are often predicted with the aid of a material balance equation. When the reservoir fluid is very volatile, however, certain assumptions implicit in the use of the conventional methods are no longer valid. This is became laboratory differential vaporization test procedures do not adequately represent the reservoir depletion process and the performance of surface separation facilities. In such cases recovery of stock tank oil per unit of pressure decline can be predicted only from a detailed knowledge of the separator conditions and the over-all composition of the fluid entering the wellbore at each stage of depletion. Surface recovery is not simply related to the total quantity of liquid flowing into the well under reservoir conditions. In order to improve predictions for reservoirs which produce volatile oils, a step wise method of calculation has been developed. This method uses relative permeability data and multicomponent flash calculations to predict oil and gas production as a function of reservoir pressure. Calculations are presented for a reservoir containing a volatile crude oil, and predicted tank oil recovery by primary depletion is more than twice that predicted by conventional methods which are known to be adequate for ordinary black crude oils. Calculated maximum produced gas-oil ratio is less than one-fourth of the conventional prediction. Wellstream compositions have also been used to determine variation in stock tank oil composition and liquid content of the separator gas. This information is of particular importance for crude stabilization calculations and for design of gasoline plant facilities to recover LPG and natural gasoline. INTRODUCTION The estimation of oil reserves and the prediction of future recovery performance of petroleum reservoirs is a frequent task of the petroleum engineer. If the reservoir produces under volumetric control, performance calculations for primary depletion are made by combining oil and gas material balances with the gas-oil flow characteristics of the reservoir rock. For black oil reservoirs, the Schilthuis1 type material balance is commonly employed. For gas or gas-condensate reservoirs, where only one phase is flowing under bottom-hole conditions, a more simplified material balance is used. In the period in which these material balance methods were conceived and put into practice, it was common to classify reservoirs according to the type of fluid produced as (1) black oil reservoirs, or (2) gas or gas-condensate reservoirs. Recently, however, deeper drilling and more extensive studies of reservoir fluid properties have led to the recognition of reservoir fluids with phase characteristics between those of ordinary black oils, and gases or gas-condensate fluids. These intermediate fluids contain relatively large amounts of the hydrocarbons ethane through decane and are found in deep, high temperature (250°F) reservoirs. Such fluids are often referred to as high shrinkage crudes or "volatile oils." They are usually characterized by tank oil gravities above 45° API. high solution gas/oil ratios,
