IN the field of mineral resources, today's problems and those we can reasonably expect in the future are so vast that nothing less than world-wide thinking and world-wide planning will suffice. I can imagine nothing more useful for the Institute to do in celebration of its seventy-fifth anniversary than to hold this conference on world mineral resources. Mineral resources are the basis of any nation's industrial production. Without expanding industrial production, the high standard of living found in the United States could not exist. Without such a standard of living it would be most unlikely that we should have a high level of culture. The hope of the world, as I see it, depends very largely on a general rise in living standards everywhere, and in the general increase of the levels of culture including a sympathetic understanding of the problems of other nations. For this reason, the proper use of the world's remaining mineral resources must be taken into account in any plans to safeguard the peace of the world. Being as exasperatingly human as human beings always seem to be,. we usually wait until almost too late to begin our plans to stave off an impending disaster. We do this as individuals, as components of particular States or Governments, and as citizens of the world. DESPITE the tremendous drop in the volume of domestic production of metals, their prices, and profits, the world as a whole has managed to produce and consume nearly as much as in 1937. Measured by production, 1937 was the record year for copper, lead, and zinc. The Copper Institute figures for 1938 (estimating December as equal to November) show that although apparent domestic consumption declined 309,422 tons, foreign consumption increased 133.035 tons. The total for 1938 was 1,971,790 tons compared with 2,148,177 tons for 1937. The domestic decline was 38.5 per cent, the foreign increase 9.9 per cent, and the total decline 8.2 per cent.

R. T. Hukki (Finland Institute of Technology, Helsinki, Finland)—In the analysis of mill products containing minerals of appreciable difference in specific gravity the well-known principle of the method described by Stanley is applied in a number of ways for a variety of problems. The use of Le Chatelier bottle as explained in the paper may be a dependable and sufficiently accurate way, although no information is given as to the reproducibility of the specific gravity determinations. In the case of MacIntyre ore the method is applied for three separate products produced apparently without reagents and relatively free of fine slimes. Should it be applied for flotation products carrying a substantial amount of slimes, difficulties should be anticipated in the process of eliminating air inclusions from the sample. The difficulties mentioned above may be overcome by the use of a volumeter, an instrument designed for specific gravity determinations of finely divided solids in dry state. This instrument, see Fig. 4, is manufactured by F. Süffert-Bürner A. G. in Basel, Switzerland. Its operation is based on the law of Boyle and Mariotte. With the use of the volumeter, the specific gravities of test samples having a total volume of about 30 cm are easily reproducible within ±2 units in the second decimal of the specific gravity figure, and even better than that with utmost care. This accuracy is sufficient for ordinary operational control. How closely the specific gravity determinations follow the respective chemical assays depends primarily on the nature of the sample itself. In this respect no specific gravity instrument can give better results than those justified by the consistency of mineral distribution in samples analyzed.

1. Brinell tests at progressively increasing temperatures are given for a representative lead-base and a representative tin-base babbitt, showing that the former has superior resistance to deformation at the working temperatures of bearings. 2. Small squares of bearing bronze, tinned and then babbitted with a representative lead-base babbitt and a representative tin-base babbitt were subjected to compressive loading. The lead-base babbitt showed less average compression than the tin-base babbitt. Compression did not materially increase the Brinell hardness of the babbitts. 3. A process and a tool are described for giving smoother and more accurate surfaces to bearings than has heretofore been possible. The following experiments have recently been carried out in the chemical laboratory of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. While the work is incomplete, it is described at the present time because data on the comparative merits of lead-base and tin-base babbitts are of interest in connection with the present shortage of tin. BRinell Habdness of Babbitt at Increasing Temperatures Bearings fail because of wiping, or deformation. Hence tenacity is desirable in a bearing metal, especially tenacity at high temperatures. The Brinell test is commonly regarded as a measure of tenacity. In fact, it has recently been proposed to substitute for Brinell hardness number the expression " tenacity number."l It seemed, therefore, that the Brinell test was especially adapted for the tests described. Disks, 4 in. (101 mm.) in diameter and 1.5 in. (38 mm.) thick, were made of the babbitts to be studied, designated A, B, C. They were poured into metal molds, pyrometer leads being soldered in the center of each disk. The composition of the babbitts was as follows:

The object of the construction and operation of the 80-ton leaching plant was to test out the leaching of sand tailings on a large scale and, if possible, determine a definite method of operation, and the best construction for the larger unit which is now being built. It was also of importance to obtain some practical data as regards cost items. The 80-ton plant was not expected to be a commercial success. A leaching process on such low-grade material necessitates the treatment of a very large tonnage. Such a cost item as labor, for instance, is entirely out of proportion in such a small plant. The amounts of acid, salt, scrap iron, and fuel for roasting, however, are the same per ton in an 80-ton plant as in a 2,000-ton plant. These costs were definitely established. Also the percentages of extraction and grade of tailings were definitely determined for a large-sized unit. Following will be found the description of the plant, the method of operation and the- results obtained. A general view of the plant is given in Fig. 1. The bins consisted of one coal bin with a capacity of 30 tons, one salt bin with a capacity of 20 tons, and a "mill tailings" or feed bin which held 70 tons. The coal and salt bins were placed with their floor level even with the firing floor of the roasting furnace. The feed bin, to give it greater capacity, discharged about 12 ft. below this point, to a 12-in. conveyor belt, which in turn discharged into a pug mill. This fed another conveyor belt, which discharged into the top hearth of the furnace. The furnace was an ordinary six-hearth MacDougall roaster, 20 ft. in diameter. It was equipped with two fire boxes, on opposite sides, the flames entering on the third hearth. An induced draft was obtained with a Buffalo blower, worked as an exhaust fan. Just above the top hearth was an annular flue around the whole circumference of the furnace. Slots at intervals of about 18 in. led from this flue down into the top hearth. The slots were 2 in. wide by 6 in. long. This annular flue proved rather unsatisfactory, as it tended to fill up with flue dust and choke the dots, thus cutting down the draft. US mine-related fatalities were reduced by 10.3% at metal and nonmetal operations in 1974, according to a report by the Secretary of the Interior to Congress concerning the administration of Public Law 89-577. While there was no significant change in the overall injury experience, the 157 fatalities were the lowest recorded in the mining industry since federal mine inspections began under the Act in 1970. The report attributes this reduction to the "improvement in the quality and increased size of the inspection force as well as the continuing emphasis on mine safety conditions and practices." The year 1974 represents the first full calendar year in which the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) had responsibility for administration of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act, and the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Prior to MESA's establishment in 1973, these functions were delegated to the US Bureau of Mines. Research activities in health and safety were continued by the Bureau in 1974.

Although the earliest use of rubber-tired haulage was in Illinois in 1936, the first unit of this type of equipment used in West Virginia was shipped into the state in 1938. All units placed in West Virginia mines have been of the shuttle-car type. The Katherine Coal Mining Co., at Lumberport, W. Va., was the second company in the United States to install shuttle cars and the Gay Coal and Coke Co., at Mt. Gay, W. Va., was the first company in the country to install the thin-bed type of shuttle car. On Oct. 8, 1940, nine companies in the state were using 41 shuttle cars, of which 10 cars at three mines were of the thin-bed type. All shuttle cars of the low type were in the southern fields and all of the high type were in northern West Virginia. At that time several units were in the process of delivery. The data in this paper were collected in the field by Mr. Schroder in connection with graduate work on mechanical loading of coal in West Virginia by mobile loaders. In the course of his field work he visited five mines in the state that were using shuttle cars. All of these mines were in high-volatile coal beds of strong structure. The more pertinent data obtained at the mines visited are given in Table I. The maximum distance of shuttle-car haul is the distance between the transfer station and the farthermost place. Tonnage per loading unit per foot of bed thickness is to some degree a measure of relative efficiency, especially if the different operations are working the same bed or have somewhat similar conditions. Practical metallurgists are unanimous in stating that oxidation of mined sulphide ore adversely affects separation of the constituent minerals under standard conditions in a mill. Frequently, the need for different operating conditions in different plants is attributed either to the extent of oxidation of the mineral surfaces or to soluble oxidation products. The investigations reported in this paper study the effect of oxidation on the primary condition necessary for flotation, namely that of adhesion of an air bubble to the mineral. Oxidation Products from Sulphide Minerals Weinig and Carpenter1 state that the relative rates of oxidation of some sulphides are: FeAsS > FeS2 > CuFeS2 > ZnS > pbS > Cu2S tetrahedrite. They also show that oxidation is rapid at first, that sulphides of older geological formations are more stable than those of recent date and that mixtures oxidize more rapidly than any one mineral alone. The more rapid oxidation of mixtures is borne out by results of Gottschalk and Buehler2 who found that PbS, zns and cus oxidized 8 to 20 times faster when pyrite was present. Only the end products of oxidation, sulphate and the metal ion, were identified in these tests. Gaudin3 states that pyrite is difficult to oxidize in the laboratory. Winchell,4 using pyrite containing 99.98 pct FeS2, allowed water to percolate through a bed of this ground material. At the end of three months only a trace of Fe+++and So4- were found. Even after 10 months the quantity of Fe+++ was only 7.8 mg and SO4- 25.5 mg per liter of percolating solution. Car-michael5 confirmed Winchell's results on the slow oxidation of pyrite. Usually the oxidation of sulphide surfaces has been conducted in neutral or acid solutions, the acidity being caused by the oxidation products. Eliseev and Nagir-nyaka found that treatment of pure pyrite with lime gave only thiosulphate, but considered it possible that thiosulphate was obtained not by oxidation of the pyrite itself, but by oxidation of calcium disul-hide. Mitrofanov7 suggested that thiO~ulphate was formed by the following process: oxidation of sulphide to give free sulphur (this frequently happens with marcasite), followed by oxidation of the sulphur to sulphur dioxide and reaction of the sulphur dioxide with sulphur to give thiosulphate. In this past year of our Institute's life, February 1960 to February 1961, we had some major problems to face, as did our members, since businesses in which they were engaged were feeling the recession. The major problems confronting us during this past year were: 1) Financing the new Engineering Center. 2) Keeping our three almost autonomous societies working together and toward a stronger AIME. 3) Cooperation with other engineering societies the Functional Plan. 4) Licensing and registration, and the Model Law. 5) The reorganization of the Council of Section Delegates. 6) Combatting the slump in the appeal of engineering to the young students.

SINCE the installation at Kropfmuehl, Bavaria, of a modern flotation concentrator in 1938, the flake and fine graphite from the Passau area can now be delivered in about any normal specified carbon content of any size range up to a flake averaging about 0.7 mm. The graphite finds a wide German and export market for crucible manufacture, pencil leads, dry cells and other uses.

Troughs or launders are probably the oldest machines used for ore concentration, and their development was suggested no doubt by the natural segregation and stratification of materials that take place in the bed of a stream. Trough washers for coal cleaning were first used in France and Germany about one hundred years ago and have been used in some form or other ever since. The early launders were intermittent or batch machines, and only comparatively recent developments have made them continuous. The chief disadvantage of early launder systems as applied to coal has been that when a satisfactorily clean coal was produced the loss of good coal in the refuse was excessive. Other disadvantages have been the large quantities of water and the great lengths of troughs necessary to treat moderate tonnages of feed. One of the most widely used types of trough washers is the Rheolaveur, which has been developed in the last 25 years. Fig. 1 shows a more or less standard arrangement for fine coal. In this there are four trouglis placed one below the other and sloped a few degrees from the horizontal. Rheo-boxes or draws are provided at intervals in the bottom of the trough for the removal of material deposited from the stream. These draws are spaced substantial distances apart. Some of the rheo-boxes are provided with upward currents of water to modify the horizontal current stratification. In operation it is the function of the first two troughs to remove all refuse material and permit only clean coal to be discharged over the end. In order to accomplish this, large quantities of coal are drawn through the rheo-boxes. The third and fourth troughs are used to recover the coal discharged through the boxes of the first two troughs as a middling product and to discharge a clean refuse. The middlings are returned to the first launder and are usually about equal to 40 per cent of the raw coal being fed to the launder. In considering launder processes, one would reason that the conditions of extreme crowding under which stratification takes place in a flowing stream should effect complete separation in a single pass down a launder.

THE growth of human knowledge is an evolutionary process. His-torically our separate sciences came into existence as people became interested in various apparently unrelated domains of phenomena, and in this manner we acquired the sciences of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and geology. As various of these sciences became established, cognizance of them came to be taken by the universities and in this manner there arose the traditional departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology and geology of our American universities. As there was no particular rationality in the boundaries separating the various sciences, in the university departments the jurisdiction of each has assumed quite arbitrary limits. In the domain of earth phenomena the first science to grow up was that of geology, which arose originally from the activities of the collectors of rocks, minerals and fossils. Thus geology evolved as a descriptive science dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena for which elementary rational explanations were offered. The traditional treat-ment of phenomena by the science of geology has rarely been with more than an elementary regard for the fact that these phenomena were also phenomena of physics and chemistry. Since the latter part of the nineteenth century, a new approach to terrestrial phenomena has been emerging and becoming of so great a significance that it can no longer be ignored. This approach has been made by people trained primarily in the sciences of physics and chemistry, who have investigated terrestrial phenomena as constituting phenomena of, their respective sciences. In this manner we have acquired the so-called "borderland sciences" of geophysics, the physics of the earth, and of geochemistry, the chemistry of the earth. Neither of these fields is new, having arisen chiefly at the hands of European investigators during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The European uni-versities have long since given official recognition at least to geophysics, by the establishment of departments or institutes of geophysics, which are on a par with ,the university departments of the other sciences.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) THE immediate vicinity of the sea-shore, affording special facility for the exportation of ores, makes it possible to work certain mines in the Vladivostok district, which, in more remote places of Siberia, would remain unproductive. Outside of the city of Vladivostok the population is small and the country is very little prospected. Additional discoveries of valuable deposits like the large body of calamine which has recently been opened in the neighborhood of earlier worked lead-silver ores, in the Tetiuhe valley, are still in the field of possibilities. For many years gold alone was produced, in part from the coastal rivers and in part from a quartz-vein on Askold island near Vladivostok. But the production is diminishing, and prospectors are looking for other rivers in the interior, such as the tributaries of the Ussuri. These rivers are now more accessible than formerly, due to the slow but gradual development, of colonization by the Russian peasants. The few natives of the country, called Orodjones, are of the Chinese race. They resemble the North American Indian and are hardy fur-hunters. They have given some attention to placers and have already shown good specimens of gold-dust from the rivers Iman, Bikin, Noto, etc. Coal-mining was begun in the Vladivostok region more than 20 years ago, but in a somewhat irregular way. The industry is not as yet important and the best coal-seams are badly prospected, or ire even neglected. Copper, lead, and iron exist in several places. The amounts give some encouragement to the anticipation that the discoveries will give rise to important metallurgical works. I here present a review of the various deposits, based upon such safe information as is in hand, when I have not drawn upon my personal observations. Fig. 1 is a snap of Eastern Siberia, showing the mineral deposits.

WHILE examining lineage boundaries in germanium single crystals as described by Vogel et al.,&apos; patterns of conical etch pits were noted which reveal interesting properties of dislocations. The crystals were grown by pulling in the <100> direction, and (100) surfaces perpendicular to the growth direction were etched 4 min in a mixture of 6 cu cm HF, 10 cu cm HNO3, 6 cu cm acetic acid, 3 drops Br,. Lineage boundaries extended in any direction, but favored the <110> direction. The patterns which were noted first were composed of two or three etch pits arranged symmetrically about the lineage boundary, so that the doublets were spaced equally on either side of the boundary line and the triplets had their center pit on the boundary line. The triplets occurred less often than did the doublets; occasionally combinations were found. Two such combination patterns are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The orientation of the patterns was determined approximately by subsequently etching the same surfaces in a mixture of 5 cu cm HF, 5 cu cm super-0x01, and 20 cu cm distilled water which produced nearby random square etch pits having edges in the <110> direction. In all cases, the axis of symmetry was <110>, being parallel to the etch-pit edges. Several successive lapping and etching operations showed that the patterns tended to continue through the crystal in the <100> direction, but eventually changed or vanished. It can be seen in both photographs that the pits in the patterns are much further apart than the pits in the adjacent section of the lineage boundary. In Fig. 1, the 10 pits of the pat-

An infrared study of the states of hydration of MgSO4 revealed a hitherto unreported metustable dehydration state in the temperature range just below that of the stable anhydrous salt. Infrared, thermogvavimetric, and X-ray studies indicated that the state had bisulfate and hydroxide characteristics. A formula fitting all of the experimental evidence is hydrogen-bonded Mg(OH)HSO4, or possibly the chemically equivalent 1/2 Mg(HSO4)2. Mg(OH)2 Infrared spectra of the 7, 6, 1, and OH2O states of hydration are given as well as the spectra of the newly found state which is called the bisulfate state in this paper. Thermogvavimetric studies as a function of water-vapor pressure gave an enthalpy value of 16 cal per mole, and 25 eu for the conversion of the bisulfate state to that of the anhydrous salt. The free energies of the transition varied from 1.76 to 0.18 kcal per mole as the transition temperature varied from 279° to 336°C. The bisulfate state is believed to be of importance in catalytic dehydration phenomena using MgSO4 and may be of interest because of properties in sulfating reactions differing from those of the monohydrate. Also, an analogous state may exist as a hydration state of other sulfates. ANHYDROUS magnesium sulfate is a catalyst with a high degree of specificity for the dehydration of secondary alcohols.1&apos;2 The only product obtained at the usual operating temperature range of 360" to 400°C other than the corresponding olefin is water. Thus, the bonding of water to the anhydrous salt as well as an understanding of the hydration states of MgSO4 became of interest in attempting to understand the catalytic mechanism better. In the process of this study using infrared, X-ray, and thermogravimetric analyses a dehydration state not previously reported was found. Proof of its existence, the nature of the state, and its role, if any, in the catalytic mechanism then became of interest. This paper is concerned principally with the first two aspects of this problem. Magnesium sulfate forms many hydrates, of which the monohydrate and heptahydrate (Epsom salts)3 are most important. Other hydrates4 are known with 1-1/4,5 l-1/2, 5 2, 4, 5, 6, and 12 H2O&apos;s. The hydrates with 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 4, and 5 HzO&apos;s are unstable. The anhydrous salt is very stable thermally and has a strong affinity for water. It can be heated without additional decomposition to about 800°C.&apos; At 900°C noticeable decomposition takes

THERE is a considerable tonnage of iron ore in the Menominee Range of Michigan that is unsalable only because it has too large a content of sulphur. Beneficiation of such ore is economically desirable, as a relatively large quantity of finished concentrate would be obtained (deleterious sulphur mineral content being generally less than 5 per cent) and because large blocks of such ore have been developed incidentally during search for low-sulphur ore. Research on the flotation beiieficiation of these high-sulphur ores consisted of: (1) a study of the flotative properties of the principal minerals in a nearly pure state, (2) flotation of synthetic mixtures of these pure minerals and (3) application of this experimental information to samples of the ores. Gypsum in iron ores is extremely deleterious; but when sufficiently free from impurities it is a valuable commodity. In 1934, the United States produced 1,500,000 tons of calcined and uncalcined gypsum valued at $13,700,0001. Of this quantity and value, Michigan produced approximately 19 per cent4. Thus this investigation may also prove to be of interest in connection with the gypsum industry if minerals separation, such as flotation, becomes necessary in the future processing of gypsum. Data on the flotative properties of gypsum would also be of interest to the science of flotation because such information has been extremely limited. The technical literature reveals one reference to the flotation of gypsum, in which was discussed the use of the mineral, with several others, to determine the relation between the floatability of minerals and the pH of the flotation solution2. This investigation necessarily was not comprehensive in regard to gypsum, but it did show that the mineral could be floated with oleic acid under varying pH conditions.

Ore deposits are commonly divided into two classes, syngenetic and epigenetic, according to whether the ore was deposited together with the enclosing rock or was introduced after its deposition or solidification. Epigenetic deposits, which are by far the more important class, owe their formation to the channels that permitted the ingress of their metals, and both classes are, subject to great modification by post-mineral changes in the containing rocks. A discussion of the structural features of rocks, therefore, necessarily precedes any consideration of ore deposits or processes of ore deposition. The arrangement of sediments in parallel and approximately horizontal layers is called stratification, and is an original property of sedimentary rocks. Successive strata of the same sedimentary bed commonly differ from each other in some minor characteristic, such as texture or color, which results in a bedded or stratified appearance. The subjection of a rock to pressure develops within it parallel planes of weakness, called cleavage planes, along which the rock breaks into relatively regular slabs or blocks; the direction of these cleavage planes, which bear no relation to stratification, is determined by the direction of the pressure that produced them. Where there are more than one set of cleavage planes, one of them is likely to be more prominent than the others. In sedimentary rocks, the cleavage may coincide with the stratification but more commonly cuts across it. Van Hise has defined cleavage as the "capacity present in some rocks to break in some directions more easily than in others." Cleavage, therefore, does not imply the existence of subdivisions, but rather the tendency to subdivide along certain planes.

Rope-type haulage has had many applications in the mining and allied industries. Records have indicated favorable results both from a standpoint of efficiency and investment. The Truax-Traer Coal Co. has used some variations of rope haulage at their mines and preparation plants. They have built a system which solves their particular problems, and have an investment which has indicated an annual savings in operating costs. Rope haulage, as applied to the mining industry, goes back many years for both underground and surface mining, or a combination of both. The Truax-Traer Coal Co. has used gravity retarding hoists as well as several variations of rope haulage, including electrical and combinations of both, but each was limited in its use and application by natural conditions and economies of the operation. Several systems of rope haulage equipment are offered by manufacturers today for handling railroad car movement on a limited or continuous basis. The portal and railroad loading facilities of Truax-Traer Coal Co.&apos;s Burning Star Slope mine, located in Jackson County, Ill., were moved in 1960. The old location was abondoned, eliminating 3% miles of underground track haulage. The mine was converted to an all-belt system, and coal is loaded at a new raw coal plant and shipped by railroad cars to a central cleaning plant. The company wanted to operate the surface facilities as efficiently as possible, employing a minimum number of workers, using the latest type railroad car movers. The existing rope haulage facilities at several locations throughout the country were examined and considered for the Slope mine location. The application of each appeared favorable but lacked flexibility, and it was difficult to justify the capital investment. The company decided to investigate the possibility of building a system that would apply to their problem, and have an investment that could be amortized in a relatively short period. SPECIFICATIONS They employed the services of Allen and Garcia Co. of Chicago, Ill. Through combined efforts, a railroad car rope system was designed to specifications as shown in Fig. 1. The Falk Corp. of Milwaukee, Wis. built the hoist to the specifications as shown in Fig. 2. It has an all welded base and pedestals. The all welded drum is not grooved. A single helical gear was used in lieu of herring bone type. A Falk speed reducer, Unit 90Y3-A, is driven by a 25-hp 1800-rpm, 440-V ac type &apos;C&apos; (high starting torque) drip-proof, Frame 324-U motor. The speed reducer shaft is equipped with a solenoid operated ac spring set shoe brake, operating on a 7-in. diam. brake wheel. The dolly car, shown in Fig. 3, was field constructed, using the trucks and frame of a railroad tank car. Truax-Traer did not alter the frame but added plates and anchors for hoist ropes and frames for 8.5 tons of concrete to be used as ballast on the car. The limit switch operating shoe was also installed and the car coupler latch mechanism overhauled. The hoist rope selected was 1% in. in diam., 6x37 improved plow steel extra flexible, right lay, regular lay, with independent wire rope core, and preformed. Wedge sockets were used to connect rope to the dolly car as shown in Fig. 4. The system employs two 30-in. and three 16-in. diam. sheaves. All are bronze bushed and equipped with grease fittings. Larger sheaves are used for directional change of hoist rope and the smaller ones as snub sheaves to correct fleet angle of rope as it approaches the hoist drum. The Trench lay cable, buried between the two tracks, is used for electrical distribution and controls between hoists and operator&apos;s cab. Foundations for the system required 187 cu yards of reinforced concrete using approximately 60 cu yd each at three locations. Four hoists are employed in the system, two for each track. A pair is interconnected electrically and when one operates, moving the cars, the tail hoist idles with brake released. The process is repeated for the reverse direction. A limit switch, mounted in the track near each end of the system, is tripped by the dolly car as it approaches the hoist.
