WHILE working, during the summer of 1877, upon the "Chemical Composition and Physical Properties of Steel Rails," the results of which are given in my report with this title, I was struck with the surprising wear which some of the rails, which would ordinarily be called soft rails, had endured. At that time I knew of no chemical measure of softness except low carbon, and I found that a number of rails with low carbon had endured as high or higher tonnage, with apparently as little loss of metal by wear, as those with higher carbon. My own work on steel rails that summer did not embrace any definite experiments as to the amount of metal worn off the rail per million tons which had passed over it; and so I could get no more definite answer from that work, to the question at the head of this paper, than was given by comparing the appearance of the worn section of the rail with its tonnage. This comparison, however, served to arouse in my mind the query, whether the commonly received opinion as to the relation between the hardness and wearing power of steel is correct, as applied to steel rails. This opinion, if I am right, is: the harder the steel, the better will be the wear, and the limit of hardness is simply one of safety ; hard, brittle steel being, of course, more liable to break than soft, tough steel. The query, although aroused, did not bear any immediate fruit, and, as will be evident to any one reading it, the report above referred to was written with the commonly received opinion in mind. Since that time I have collected a little information upon this subject, which I should be glad to submit to the Institute, if for no other purpose, for the sake of arousing attention, and directing study to the question of hardness versus wear in steel rails. Before making known this information, however, permit me a few words in reference to hardness. How shall we measure the hardness of steel ? Of the various ways of getting indications as to the hardness of steel, which are known, three will serve our present purpose. These are: 1st. High carbon. Conventional resistivity logs consisting of a short normal, a long normal, and one or more long lateral curves do not give data that allow a complete quantitative interpretation in beds thinner than 20 ft. Reservoir rocks usually exhibit zones of continuous homogeneity of quite limited thickness where the long lateral curves become useless because of adjacent bed effects and boundary phenomena. If the beds are 12 ft or thicker, the short and long normals may be used for qualitative interpretation, which can be streamlined by the application of simplified departure curves. For beds of a thickness less than twice the long normal spacing, this procedure breaks down. The combination of the limestone curve, the later-olog or guard electrode log, and the microlaterolog permit quantitative interpretation for beds that are at least 10 ft thick, provided the mud resistivity and the hole diameter are known with sufficient accuracy. For beds thinner than 10 ft, combinations of the microlaterolog with short spaced laterologs and pseudo laterologs appear to be promising. Interpretation of these curves again requires the application of simplified departure curves. Resolution of various possible combinations was analyzed using departure curve data calculated on the Whirlwind I computer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A field example is shown using the microlaterolog-microlog combination, and the combination of a 6-in. modified laterolog plus a 6-in. pseudo laterolog. INTRODUCTION For the purpose of quantitative interpretation of resistivity logs in porous formations, we want to obtain two essential quantities from the logs, namely, the true resistivity of the undisturbed formation, Rt, and the resistivity of the part of the formation invaded by mud filtrate, Rt. The apparent resistivities of all conventional logging devices are functions of these two parameters and are also influenced by a third unknown parameter, the diameter of the invaded zone, d. It has been shown' that from the normal curves alone it is impossible to arrive at a unique solution for the three unknowns, Rt, R1, and d1. In very thick homogeneous beds, if invasion is not too deep, we can obtain a fair approximation to Rt from the long lateral curves and then use the two normal curves to find Rt and d1 Even under the most favorable conditions, the resolution of this system is not very good. The short normal does not give a reasonable approximation to R1 unless invasion is very deep (dl>16 hole diameters). For very deep invasion, however, the long laterals no longer approximate Rt. For bed thickness between 20 and 40 ft, the long laterals are affected appreciably by the adjacent beds; and the curves are distorted by boundary anomalies to the extent that they lose their quantitative usefulness in most cases. For the same bed thicknesses, the normal curves still function reasonably well. Although it is impossible to find unique solutions Lor R1 and Rt using the normal curves alone, we can obtain a reasonable approximation for the ratio R1/Rt through the use of simplified departure curves. This fact was brought to our attention by A. J. de Witte, geologist with Continental Oil Co. As the magnitude of Rl/Rt is a major clue to the presence of oil in formations, this method can be used to good advantage for qualitative analysis and will be discussed in somewhat greater detail. With the aid of suitable bed thickness corrections, the analysis of the normal curves may be used for bed thicknesses larger than 12 ft. For thinner beds, the method rapidly loses its resolution; and we have to resort to different types of resistivity logs if we want to attempt to analyze the curves quantitatively. The inadequacy of conventional resistivity curves in thin beds is far more serious than generally realized. Fig. 1 shows a conventional E. S. with a 16-in. and 64-in. normal and a 16-ft lateral through a section of Lansing-Kansas City lime, in comparison to a guard electrode survey through the same section in a neighboring well. The porous zones, which show up as low resistivity breaks on the guard electrode log, are completely masked by adjacent bed effects and boundary anomalies on the conventional curves. The development of a theory for miscible liquid displacement requires evaluation of the variables which affect growth of the mixing zone between solvent and displaced oil. Factors which appear to be important are individual fluid viscosities, viscosity ratios, flood rate, fluid densities, flow characteristics of the porous medium and molecular diffusion coefficients of the fluid components. The primary purpose of this paper is to evaluate diffusion effects. Theoretical treatments to date have been limited to floods for which the viscosity ratio is one. Two principal theories have been proposed. Von Rosenberg adapted for porous media a theory derived for capillary tubes by G. Taylor.' ,' In this theory molecular diffusion perpendicular to the direction of flow is a primary factor in sharpening the flood front. Slow floods give sharper fronts for a given distance traveled than fast floods. An alternative theory considers miscible liquid displacement as a statistical problem.3,4,5 Diffusion is not an important factor in this theory, but it leads to the same general type of equation as von Rosenberg's. Both theories predict S-shaped concentration profiles with the same dependence on distance traveled. The statistical or "dispersion" theory predicts rate independence, however. To supplement rate studies a direct measurement of a diffusion effect would be helpful in evaluating which of the two proposed mechanisms best describes miscible liquid displacement for one-to-one viscosity ratio systems. No quantitative theory has been proposed for floods in which a low-viscosity fluid displaces a high-viscosity fluid. It might be anticipated, however, that the extensive fingering observed in floods with adverse viscosity ratios would increase opportunities for an exchange of components between displaced and displacing liquids by a diffusional process. Even if molecular diffusion were not an important mixing mechanism for one-to-one viscosity ratio systems, it could be significant in systems with adverse viscosity ratios. METHOD FOR EVALUATING DIFFUSIONAL MIXING In solvent flooding the displacing liquid can become mixed with the displaced liquid by a number of processes; in general, either mechanical or diffusional in character. To evaluate the contribution of diffusion, a method was sought that would distinguish diffusional mixing from mechanical mixing. Suppose two soluble tracers are added to the displacing liquid and that one tracer has a diffusion coefficient much greater than the other. Then, if diffusion is important during miscible liquid displacement and if diffusional transport is primarily transverse to the direction of flow, substances with high diffusion coefficients will have sharper concentration profiles than those with comparatively low molecular diffusion coefficients. In order to have material balance the profiles for the two tracers must intersect. For one-to-one viscosity ratios the intersection would occur at the 50 per cent concentration point. It is generally assumed that diffusion in the direction of flow is negligible. This assumption appears reasonable because flow velocities are ordinarily orders of magnitude greater than diffusional velocities. If this is not a valid assumption, however, the shapes of the fronts will be further degraded by longitudinal diffusion. The effects of rate and molecular diffusion coefficients are the opposite for longitudinal diffusion to those for lateral diffusion. Higher rates or lower diffusion coefficients would tend to give sharper fronts. The double tracer method offers several unique advantages in evaluating effect of molecular diffusion. First, the method gives a direct measure of the effect of diffusion on mixing zone size. Second, the effect of a difference in diffusion coefficients is determined from a single experiment. Comparison of several experiments at different rates is not required. Third, the method is applicable for any viscosity ratio. Fourth, the method is unaffected by density differences between the two fluids which might result in rate dependent gravity effects. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Suitable tracers are substances whose diffusion coefficients differ as widely as possible, but whose adsorptions on rock surfaces is negligible. The two tracers selected were methanol and sucrose in water solutions. The approximate diffusion coefficients for methanol and sucrose, as given in the International Critical Tables, are 1.3 X 10-5 and 0.3 X 10-5 m2/sec, respectively. ANNEALING twins are common in the microstructure of copper that has been rolled and recrystallized. In such samples it follows that a twin relationship should exist between components of the recrystallization texture,1 and several examples of this have been reported. For example, twin relationships have been found in recrystallized electrolytic copper sheet, as indicated in Fig. I, from a paper by Coheur and Lejeune.2 In this pole figure the cube texture (100) [001] is indicated by the hollow squares in the lower half of the figure (the pole figure for 200 reflections) and in the upper, (111), part of the figure. The texture contains, in addition to this orientation, the first-order twins of it, shown in the figure by the filled triangles. This orientation relation has been suggested by others also, under certain annealing conditions,3,4 although pole figures have not been published to confirm it. Some orientations in recrystallized sheets are identical with their twins, because of the symmetry elements of the texture this is true, for example, with the (113) [211] texture so commonly reported for brass-hence it appears impossible in such samples to decide whether the twin relationships result from twinning or merely from the symmetry of the deformation process. The present investigation of a commercial copper strip seems to yield an example in which annealing twins account unambiguously for the principal orientations present. It proves to be a case, also, for which the recrystallization texture cannot be viewed as derived from the deformation texture by a first or second-order twinning mechanism . MATERIALS AND METHODS The samples investigated were of secondary copper (melted in Belgium) to which 0.19 per cent iron had been added to raise the recrystallization temperature. How much the orientation characteristics of this metal can be ascribed to the iron content and how much to other impurities or to melting and pouring practice has not been investigated.* The rolling was done in one direction only, on a mill with rolls of about 20-cm diameter. A strip 10 cm wide was reduced from 5 mm thickness to 0.05 mm by several cold passes at commercial speeds. The samples cut from this 99 per cent reduced strip were X-rayed throughout their entire thickness. A pole figure made soon after rolling and annealing was identical, within experimental error, with one that was made when a two-year interval occurred between rolling and annealing. A severely technical article, however well written, can not be an agreeable form of literature. It suffers from the defects of its qualities. One defect is a congestion of language, due to a multiplicity of adjectival nouns. The sentences are packed with words of unpleasing sound, charged with complex ideas, crowding one another so closely that the phraseology moves like an ice-pack in Bering Sea or a log-drive in a river; the undercurrent of meaning may continue to move, but the surface is obstructed. This verbal congestion is made evident by ugly compoundings, many of which are adopted by the technical writer in the mistaken belief that they give directness to his statements. Rotary oscillation of the mold has been used to produce mechanical stirring of the melt during unidirectional solidification. Al-Cu alloys (1 to 4 wt pct Cu) were solidified to study the influence of alloy composition, temperature at which intensive cooling was initiated, and intensity of stirring on the temperature distribution in the sample, the resulting structure, and the copper microsegregation at the columnar to equiaxed transition. The Proposed explanation for the equiaxed solidification in stirred castings consists of the melting off of dendrite fragments, their partial remelting in hotter liquid, and the subsequent growth of the surviving part when the temperature of the melt is lowered. This may result in the formation of a crystal network, which can stop the growth of the columnar crystals and produce the equiaxed zone. It has long been known and many times affirmed that ultrasonic vibrations or relative motion of liquid and solid can significantly reduce the length of the columnar zone and refine the grains in the equiaxed zone in ingots and castings. Because of the technological importance of these phenomena many investigations have been conducted in which ultrasonic energy or mechanical vibration,1-6 electromagnetic stirring,7"10'17 magnetic stirring,"'12 or mechanical stirring13'14 were used to produce the relative liquid-solid motion. More recently, the question of the importance of natural (or thermal) convection has been raised.15-l7 Several possible mechanisms have been suggested.l,8,18-20 They can be divided into two main groups. The first group includes such nucleation hypotheses as nucleation frequency enhancement due to cavitation at the mold wall or other surfaces; cavita-tion in the body of the liquid resulting from the pressure wave, or an agglomeration mechanism, which involves the formation of nuclei by the accretion of subcritical nuclei. The second group considers the grain-refining action to be due to crystal multiplication phenomena such as the removal of the dendrite fragments by viscous forces or by a high-pressure cycle following cavitation or by a melting-off process. Sbme recent investigations give good experimental support to the melting-off proposa1.21-23 The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of mechanical stirring during the unidirectional solidification on the structure of alloy samples and on the solidification variables. The motion of the liquid was produced by rotary oscillation of the mold around its vertical axis.

UNDER the name of the Russian Far East we understand the territory occupied by the Amur, Maritime, Sakhalin and Kamchatka Provinces, the total area of which is about 918,000 square miles. The mining industry took its first step in the Russian Far East in the second half of the 19th century, and until the end of this century was restricted to gold placer mining. In the last years of the 19th century, the extraction of coal and lignite was begun, and in 1910-11 the exploitation of silver-lead-zinc mines. The conditions of the Far Eastern mining industry during the last few years may be outlined by the following figures. Annual production of gold mines was about 54,000 lb., valued at $13,000,000. During the period of 1910-15 a considerable increase of placer-gold mining by mechanical processes took place; in 1910, by means of dredging and excavators, 500 lb.. of gold were obtained; in 1914, 2740 pounds. Annual output of coal; lignite and. silver-lead-zinc ores was: 1911 1920 Bituminous and semi-anthracite coal, long tons 270,000 316,000 Lignite, long tons 66,000 205,000 Silver-lead-zinc ores, long tons 28,400 94,500 In other branches of mining in the Far East, only the quarrying of building stone and clay may be men-tioned, the total yearly output amounting to about $500,000 in value. The principal gold mines are in the Amur Province, in the systems of the Zeia and Bureia rivers, and in Kamchatka Province, near the town of Okhotsk. The above-mentioned tonnage of coal and lignite was extracted from the mines in the Maritime Province, near Vladivostok. The only silver-lead-zinc mine worked was that of Tetiukhe, near the Tetiukhe Bay, 240 miles northeast of Vladivostok. The ores of this mine were exported to Germany, Belgium, and Japan, partly raw, partly calcined.

Self-diffusion has been measured along each principal axis of mosaic-structured and relatively perfect a uvaniuln single crystals. The anisotropy reported before,' D[loo] = D[001] » D[010 , has been confirmed. and is shown to represent volume diffusion. Diffusion along the dislocations in the imperfect crystals increases the measured value of D significantly without changingr either the shapes of the penetvation plots or the anisotropy. SINCE a uranium is orthorhombic, the diffusion coefficients along the principal crystallographic axes need not be equal. A previous measurement of self-diffusion in three mosaic-structured a uranium single crystals1 showed that Dil00| =D[001 >>D[010 This result was deduced from penetration plots similar to those in Fig. 1. That is, the plots for diffusion along [loo] and [001] were the straight lines expected from the solution of the diffusion equation for the boundary and initial conditions of the experiment, while the plot for diffusion along [010] was curved so that the part near X = 0 had a much steeper slope than the straight lines did. The observed anisotropy could have been due either to volume diffusion or to diffusion along the very large number of dislocations in such crystals, according to the model proposed by aart.' The authors of Ref. 1 argued that the latter possibility was unlikely, but did not exclude it. To settle the question, a simultaneous measurement of self-diffusion in mosaic-structured and mosaic-free crystals was carried out. This paper reports the results, as well as a measurement of the temperature dependence of self-diffusion in a uranium. EXPERIMENTAL The single crystals of a uranium used in this experiment are listed in Table I, together with other experimental details. '(Mosaic structured" here means crystals grown by solid-state phase change.3 The Laue spots from such crystals spread over about 6 deg of arc, which indicates that the density of dislocations is very large. "Perfect" crystals are ones grown by Fisher's grain-coarsening tehnique; the Laue spots from these are quite sharp,4 which shows that the dislocation density in these crystals is much lower. All of the crystals were made from high-purity uranium; a typical analysis is given in Ref. 1. The actual diffusion directions were within a few degrees of the nominal. The thin layer-sectioning method was used. The experimental techniques were similar to those described in Ref. 1, except the sectioning. Crystals Za, 2b, 2c, 4a, 4b, and 4c were sectioned on a lathe. Crystals 3a, 3b, and 3c were sectioned by grinding on glass plates, with 1 p diamond powder in butyl alcohol as the abrasive. The use of glass plates eliminated the crowning noted in Ref. 1, and the use of butyl alcohol as a lubricant simplified the chemical processing of the sections. Material from the sides of these three crystals was removed by spark machining before sectioning. The sectioning of crystals 4a and 4c was botched. A small cylinder of metal was extruded from the center of crystal 4a while turning off material from the side of the sample. Crystal 4c was misaligned by 2.1 x 10"3 cm because the dial gage jammed during the alignment. Notwithstanding these errors, useful data were still obtained from these crystals. The points

THE general subject of accurate pyrometry, its great development in recent years, and the importance of its application in arts and manufactures is so ably treated in other papers that this paper will bee confined to a resume of some research work on certain temperature effects in carbon and other steels, some of which appear to, be new. The results of these researches are embodied in several papers presented to' various scientific societies during the last few years, most of them under the general title of Spontaneous Generation of Heat in Recently Hardened Steel.1 Several years ago, when studying the behavior, tinder certain conditions, of specimens of hardened tool steel, I observed that they all spontaneously generated a small quantity of heat, the rate of generation diminishing from day to day for several weeks before generation became imperceptible in the sensitive calorimeter used. In each case the steel had been hardened only a few days prior to its use. It seemed highly probable that the generation of heat was associated with some sort of "seasoning" or incipient annealing process, perhaps accompanied by slight changes of volume, and that it would be most rapid immediately after hardening. I subsequently investigated this curious phenomenon more fully. Twelve ½ in. round bars of tool steel, 5 in. long and with machined surfaces, were hardened by heating to high cherry red in a reducing atmosphere of a gas furnace and quenched in cold water. The bars then had a thin strongly adhering coating of black oxide. They were next stirred in a large quantity of water at room temperature, to acquire that temperature, wiped dry, and oiled with heavy, neutral mineral oil to prevent generation of heat by further surface oxidation, wiped free of excess of oil and placed in the copper cylinder of a heat-insulated box.

Staznless steels ave rrzuch less seuel-ely attacketl by zinc lapov than by molten zinc systems. To determine the applicubility of stainless steels fov equipment items which would be exposed only to zinc vapor, the corvosion resistance of several stainless steels to zinc vapor was investigated in 500-hr- exposuves at 900° C. Two austenilic stainless steels, Types 304 and 3-17, suffered severe intergranular attack. Loss of nickel from these steels and micro-probe crnalyses indicated the probable formation of low-melting zinc-rich phases. Good vesistance to attack by zinc vapor, as determined by metallo-9-rpaphic excr)rtination and physical testing, Loas exhibited by Type 405 stainless steel, a jevvitic steel. Type 440C stainless steel, a tnartensitic steel, although suffering considevable loss in weight, was not structurally weakened. At Argonne National Laboratory liquid zinc and zinc-rich alloys are being employed as solvent media in pyrometallurgical processes under development for recovering and purifying discharged reactor-fuel materials.' Because of the high solubility of most metals in liquid zinc,' there are few metals which can serve as container materials for liquid zinc at temperatures much above the melting point. The poor corrosion resistance of the common metals and alloys to molten zinc has been discussed by Eldred.3 DeKany, Lavendel, and Burris4 tested some of the less-common alloys of the nonrefractory metals and found that they also have poor resistance to attack by liquid zinc and Zn-Mg solutions. Of the metallic materials, only some of the refractory metals such as tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum and their alloys have shown resistance to attack by liquid zinc.4-7 In the process-development work at Argonne National Laboratory, tantalum and tungsten vessels have been used to hold liquid-zinc alloys. These vessels are housed in stainless-steel equipment, principally to permit maintenance of an inert atmosphere and operation at various pressures. In this experimental work, it has often been observed that Type 304 stainless steel suffers little attack by zinc vapor at temperatures up to about 800 °C. In contrast, severe attack occurs in areas where zinc condenses as a liquid. The extent of attack by zinc vapor on several stainless steels was investigated because there are possible useful applications of stainless steel for equipment items which would be exposed only to attack by zinc vapor. These applications include, for example, housings around processing equipment as indicated above and vapor lines leading from zinc stillpots or retorts to condensers. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE The experimental procedure consisted in exposing stainless-steel test coupons to static zinc vapor for 500 hr at a temperature of about 900°C. The apparatus, shown in Fig. 1, consisted of a 12-in.-long closed tantalum tube jacketed in Type 304 stainless steel to prevent oxidation of the tantalum. At the time of the discovery of America the old world had a scant supply of the precious metals. Both the northern and the southern part of the new continent proved wonderfully rich in gold and silver and its treasures were eagerly looted; though the looting has lasted four centuries, the mines of its mountain chains are far from being exhausted. Even the later discoveries in Australasia and eastern Siberia could not rob the Western Hemisphere of its position as the greatest gold and silver producing region of the world, though finally the developments in a narrow and circumscribed area in South Africa wrested from the Americas their supremacy in the production of gold. Nevertheless the history of the two parts of the great western continent has been strikingly different. At first the Spaniards extracted vast treasures of silver from Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia, while Colombia arid some placer deposits in Peru yielded a smaller quantity of gold. A couple of centuries later, a stream of gold began to flow from Brazil, the silver production from the countries mentioned above continuing strong in the meanwhile. Later on, the yield of South America diminished, but to offset this there began a wonderful series of discoveries in North America. The gold fields of California astonished the world; and when the cream of these had been skimmed off there began a no less amazing development of the Central Cordilleran gold and silver districts, which soon made the United States the greatest producer of the precious metals. Aided by ever improving technique, extensive exploration, and a system of railroads, the yield was maintained and increased. Still later followed the discoveries of the gold fields of the arctic region and silenced those who had maintained that the zenith in gold production had passed. LANE, Tufts College, Mass.-Is there any noticeable effect in drilling against salt water? Mr. Knapp says that the mud settles very quickly when brine is added-. What is the effect when you strike a strong salt water ill boring? I. N. KNAPP.-You are supposed to have enough mud pressure in your well to keep the saltwater out. I have drilled against what I knew to be 80 ft. head of water, and hot water too at 99.5°; this water did not show until the well was bailed and the mud pressure reduced. It has been used notably by Honigmann for boring shafts in Holland and in some of the adjoining portions of Germany. At the Oranien Nassau colliery, shafts about 12 ft. in diameter and 425 ft. deep were sunk in. this way-namely, by boring with a rotary borer, a thick mud puddle being pumped into the shaft, so as to maintain a pressure in the shaft greater than the hydrostatic pressure in the surrounding loose sands and thus keeping the sides of the shaft from collapsing. He will find references to this method in Das Abbohren von Schächten; Handbuch der Ingenieurwissenshaften, p. 134, also in the Transactions of the Institution of Mining Engineers, vol. xiii (1896-97), p. 155. The process appears to have been employed even before 1895, though I cannot give the exact date when it was first used.

WHEN the Plutonium Project was started in the spring of 1942 there was no technology to produce uranium metal of the required purity. Not only was there no such metal available; no one knew how to make it or fabricate it after it was made. Since this time vast technical effort has been ex-pended in the atomic energy field. A short 15 years later the metallurgy of uranium is probably better known than that of any other metal, with the possible exception of steel. At the beginning of the 1942 drive to obtain pure uranium metal the most available raw material was black uranium oxide (U3O8) of about 92 pct purity from the Great Bear Lake region of Canada. It took only three months for the project chemists to develop a process for bringing the purity of this oxide up to 99+ pct and another three months for Mallinckrodt Chemical Co. of St. Louis to build the purification plant and get it into operation. In early summer of 1942 the purified brown oxide (UO2) started moving to the Metal Hydrides Co. in Beverly, Mass., and to the Westinghouse Research Laboratory in Bloomfield, N. J., both of which had been granted Government contracts to try to make pure uranium metal.

Major transverse structural zones in the western U.S. such as the Lewis and Clark line, Walker Lane, Texas lineament, and Colorado mineral belt, have localized important mineral districts. In Nevada and Utah the alinement of Cretaceous and Tertiary mineral deposits, such as in the Pioche, Eureka, Manhattan, and other mineral belts, may be related to similar tectonic features. All the mineral belts in Nevada and Utah have produced precious and base metals and tungsten; the Manhattan belt in addition has produced magnesite and brucite; and the Pioche belt, uranium, fluorspar, and alunite. Specific types of ore deposits seem related spatially to major belts of the Paleozoic Cordilleran geosyncline and compositionally to the intrusive bodies with which they are associated.

The total crude fluorspar reserves in Western Europe, including the USSR and the Soviet sphere, Thetotalare estimated to exceed 17 million metric tons. The total fluorspar production in 1951 in Western Europe, excluding the USSR and Soviet sphere, amounted to 371,109 metric tons. The chief fluorspar-producing countries in Europe, excluding Russia and the Soviet sphere, are France, Western Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. TOTAL crude fluorspar reserves in western Europe, containing more than 35 pct CaF2, are estimated at 12 million metric tons, while reserves in the USSR and Soviet sphere may exceed 5 million metric tons. The bulk of these reserves are concentrated in the USSR, Spain, United Kingdom, Western Germany, and Italy. Since published estimates of the tonnages of individual mines and explored deposits are not available for most countries in Europe, the estimates given in Table I for individual countries are necessarily approximate, as they have been compiled from various sources and modified and combined according to the author's judgment. The majority of fluorspar deposits in Europe belong to the late Paleozoic metallogenetic epochs and have been found within or along the borders of the Hercynian massifs. Deposits in the Central and Esterel massifs of France, those of Western and Eastern Germany, Sardinia, the Catalonian coastal range and the Sierra de los Santos in Spain, and those of Devonshire and Cornwall belong to the Hercynian metallogenetic epochs. The deposits in southern Norway and Sweden belong to the middle Paleozoic or later, those of northern England to the late Paleozoic or later, those of northern Spain and Greece to the late Mesozoic, and those of northern and probably central Italy and Switzerland to the early Tertiary. Fluorspar occurs typically in veins, lenses, and stringers, but also in bedded replacement deposits and pockets, and may be colorless to white, yellow, green, pink, brown, blue, or purple to almost black. Except for the colorless variety, the only kind which can be used for the optical industry, the color of the fluorspar does not affect its ultimate use. Crystalline cubic or octahedral fluorite of CaF2 composition, with 48.9 pct fluorine and 51.1 pct calcium, has a specific gravity of 3.18. The ore in place, however, usually averages 3.0 metric tons per cubic meter owing to the quantity of other minerals asso- ciated with the fluorspar in the veins and the physical state of the fluorspar, which may vary from sugary to massive crystalline or microscopic inter-growths with barite or quartz. Barite of 4.5 sp gr, quartz of 2.66 sp gr, and chert and calcite are commonly associated with fluorspar. Other minerals usually present in lesser amounts are celestite, wad, silver, lead, zinc, copper, iron, and uranium minerals. In some cavity fillings the rhythmic deposition of the fluorspar, barite, and quartz into successive crusts may make it possible to handpick the crude ore on belts or to separate the fluorspar from other minerals while the actual mining is carried on. Where metallurgical grade lump spar is required for foundries, separation of quartz and barite may be made also by jigs and heavy media, and in some mines the lead and zinc sulphides may be separated and recovered by vibrating tables. However, except in the case of unusually high grade deposits, acid grade fluorspar is obtained by flotation. By this process fluorspar deposits grading down to 35 pct CaF2 in the crude ore can be worked at a profit when fluorspar, lead, zinc, and silver prices are high, as the sulphides of these ores can be separated from the fluorspar by flotation and concentrated.

IN the course of an investigation of the V-CO system, two intermediate phases were found. One of these phases corresponds approximately to the stoichiometric composition VCo and is isomorphous with the sigma phase in the Fe-Cr system.' The second phase has the composition V3Co; its crystal structure is described in the present note. The alloys were prepared by mixing the two metals in the powder form, pressing a small disk weighing about 5 g at 80,000 psi, and arc melting this disk on a water-cooled copper plate in an atmosphere of pure helium. The details of this technique have been described.' The vanadium powder was obtained from Westinghouse Electric Corp., Bloomfield, N. J. This powder is probably of very high purity, since when it is properly sintered or melted in the above-mentioned arc furnace, ductile specimens are obtained. The cobalt powder, from Charles Hardy, Inc., New York, contained 0.5 pct Ni, 0.1 pct Cr, and traces of Si and Fe. After melting, the V,Co samples were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and homogenized for ten days at 800°C. Powder diffraction patterns were obtained with a 14.32 cm diam camera, using Ka copper radiation. The patterns were readily indexed on the basis of a primitive cubic lattice with a parameter equal to 4.675A. The density, determined by the immersion method, was 6.71 g per cu cm; hence the number of molecules per unit cell is approximately 1.95; i.e., 2. At this point, the possibility that the structure might be that of beta tungstena became apparent. The beta tungsten structure is described as follows: Space group 03,, — Pm3n 2 Co in (a) : 000; ?4lhYZ (hhl) reflection present only if 1 = 2n. Assuming this structure to be the correct one, intensities were computed by means of the usual eauation: 1 + cos220 I oc p F sin 0 cos 6 where F is the structure factor, 0 the Bragg angle, and p the multiplicity factor. The observed and calculated values of sin 0 and the intensities are given in Table I. The agreement between the observed and the calculated sin 0 is good and there are no flagrant discrepancies between the calculated intensities and those estimated visually. The (hhl) reflections for which 1 is odd are not observed, as required by the space group. In addition, the (410), (430), and (531) reflections are missing as expected, because of the special (a) and (c) positions in0%. However, six reflections—(llo), (220), (310), (411), (422), and (510)—which have very weak computed intensities were not observed. For these reflections, the structure factor is proportional to the difference between the scattering factors of the two atoms in the structure. Since the scattering factors of vanadium and cobalt are not very different, these reflections are weak. However, by using Ka chromium radiation, whose wavelength is just above the absorption edge of vanadium, the effective scattering factor of vanadium may be decreased by one or two units; consequently the difference between the cobalt and vanadium scattering factors is increased. It was, indeed, found that in a powder pattern taken with chromium Ka radiation, the three reflections (110), (220), and (310) were actually present. The three other reflections (411), (422), and (510), with spacings smaller than half the wavelength of chromium Ka, were obviously not obtainable with chromium radiation. All the experimental results appear to confirm the beta tungsten structure for V,Co. In this structure, each cobalt atom is surrounded by twelve vanadium atoms at 2.61A; each vanadium atom is surrounded by two vanadium atoms at 2.34A, four cobalt atoms at 2.61 A, and eight vanadium atoms at 2.86A. Demand fob Motor Fuel, 1936 During the year just closed the domestic demand for gasoline exceeded 481 million barrels. This compares with 434,810,000 bbl. consumed during 1935 and indicates an increase of 10.46 per cent. Export shipments amounted to 27,831,000 bbl. while in 1935 they totaled 30,613,000 bbl. Total demand, therefore, was 509,422,000 bbl., or 9.16 per cent above the 465,423,000 bbl. of 1935. Following are the figures for several years: Already we are supplying gasoline domestically and as foreign shipments at a rate almost 25 per cent greater than our low level of 1933. Before giving figures for 1937, I should like to spend a moment or two in discussion of gasoline inventories, from the point of view of minimum working stocks and other requirements and of probable actual levels. In adding one more to the list of papers that have been presented on the subject of steel rails, I wish to explain at the beginning that in enumerating the steps in the manufacture which, I think, have an all-important effect on the wearing-qualities of the rail produced, I do so with no little hesitation. As a student in the field, I am anxious for the opinions of others, and have finally decided to ask for it in this way. I have not stated everything which I think affects, in one way or another, the life of rails, but have confined myself to those steps in the manufacture which I felt most sure did do so. Recognizing the danger of being carried away by enthusiasm, I have endeavored to make my assertions with caution, and to understate my case rather than to overstate it; but if I have succeeded in throwing a ray of light on this vexed question and placed it in the eyes of some railroad men in an aspect which they have not fully considered, my boldness will be more than justified. I. Uniformity in the quality of the material charged into the converter assists the attainment of uniformity in the steel produced.— This is the argument which is used by the champions of the cupolamelting or indirect process, and has considerable weight. It takes vastly more skill to make good steel if there is a great irregularity in the iron charged into the vessel than if there is not this irregularity ; but on the other hand, there are certain advantages in the direct method, such as a lower sulphur-percentage from the same furnace-iron, while it is possible to get as great uniformity in the iron charged by having the furnace-capacity enough in excess of the demands from the converting department, to allow for occasional " slips " in the furnaces, and permit the mixing of the iron from two furnaces which are respectively too " hot" and too "cold." 11. Care in pouring ingots at the proper temperature into warm moulds, and the treatment of ingots before rolling, have important effects on the rails made from them.
