Reynders said, in part: "Far the greatest progress in the art of steel-nuking has occurred in the production of lighter forms such as tool steels and steels entering into the moving parts of machinery generally, and particularly into the con-struction of automobiles and airplanes. In this highly specialized field in which the study of alloys and heat treatment has brought about such fundamental changes of design and practice, Dr. Mathews has achieved a ranking position. "As the technical head of the largest producer of special steels, his laboratory conclusions are frequently but a few steps removed from practical exploitation. The experimental determinations of yesterday must be sufficiently conclusive to form the basis for the specific plans of today, and to warrant commercial production tomorrow. His is not the complacent atmosphere of theoretical speculation, but one in which practice fol-lows close upon the heels of scientific research.

During 1939 little of consequence happened in East and East Central Texas in the way of oil discoveries. At the end of the year, there were 47 oil and gas fields in the district. Twelve other fields, 11 oil and one gas, have been abandoned. The ranking fields in order of the number of completions for the year were East Texas, Talco, and Rodessa (Texas portion). There were 511 oil wells (distillate wells included), 32 gas wells, and 257 dry holes completed in the district. Exploration, Discoveries and Extensions During the year, 113 exploratory wells were drilled, the same number as in 1938; four oil fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered. Perhaps the most important discovery, which has been named Barron field, was that of M. Samuel et al., No. 1 Barron in Limestone County. The wells in this field are of the gas-distillate type. Other than the Talco and Sulphur Bluff fields, which produce oil from the Paluxy sand (Upper Trinity), this is the first field on the Corsicana-Mexia fault zone to obtain commercial production from deeper Trinity strata. This "pay" is the Petit lime of the Lower Glen Rose of the Trinity group. The four oil discoveries were: Redland, Angelina County; Bazette, Henderson County; Rowe and Baker, Henderson County; and Marion County Shallow in Marion County. It is believed that the Bazette field, Navarro County, represents an extension of the Flag Lake field. For details concerning discoveries, extensions and important wildcat wells drilled during 1939 see Table 2. Production and Proration The district produced 175,053,729 bbl. of oil (distillate production included) which is a decrease of 4.0 per cent from the 182,369,484 bbl. Brief laboratory investigations are described which attempt to determine optimum .sand concentrations in gel-sand and oil-sand1 well-treatments. The investigations apply to the case where sand acts as a propping agent in formation fractures. Both analytically and experimentally it is demonstrated that optimum sand concentrations can be defined. It is difficult to translate laboratory results to field treatments, however, since the relative distribution of sand and fluid in fractures may not be the same as injected. This is because fluid may penetrate the furtherest narrow portions of fractures, which would not pass sand. Optimum concentration of a monolayer of Ottawa sand in fractures of 0.025-in. width at the usual range of pressures encountered in treatments appears to be about 95 to 2 lb/gal. of gel. An investigation of abrasion of rock-walls by sand in treatments, described in the Appendix, shows that such abrasion is not probable in significant amounts. INTRODUCTION Experience in the Spraberry formation of West Texas, as well as in other formations, has shown that. sand is a necessary and vital part of gel-sand and oil-sand treatments. Many observers of treatments have also concluded that there seems to be an optimum range of sand concentration for these injections. Brief laboratory investigations were made at Battelle Memorial Institute to study flow in fractures with different sand concen- trations. To investigate the existence and range of optimum concentrations in the laboratory, however, necessitates knowledge of the mechanism by which the sand aids in increasing subsequent production. The action of sand in fractures is usually thought to be either that of a propping agent, thus providing a greater effective formation permeability; that of an abrasive in eroding fill material in fractures; or that of an abrasive eroding rock-wall irregularities along fracture surfaces. Investigations described in the Appendix show that sand does not appear to erode rock-wall materials appreciably. In a subsequent paper it is reasoned, at least for the Spraberry formation of West Texas, that the primary action of sand is not in removing fill materials in fractures. In this formation, and probably others, too, the main effect of sand appears to be that of a propping agent. Both analytical and experimental investigations were made for the case of a monolayer of sand acting as a propper, in which sand concentrations were determined that would, after treatment, permit flow of the maximum quantities of oil from the formation into a well. If too few sand grains are injected into fractures in which the bottom hole pressure has decreased appreciably below the original formation pressure, the confining pressure in the formation may become relatively large, thus compress the rock-walls around the sand grains, essentially close fractures, and so decrease the subsequent flow of oil. Similarly, if too much sand is used, the flow of oil will he impeded by the volume of sand present. THEORY Although an analytical approach to determining optimum sand concentrations involves gross assumptions.

The State of Pennsylvania produces approximately 60 per cent of the total production of Pennsylvania Grade oil, and naturally represents the dominant factor in the area producing that grade. The producing area comprises the states of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and a small part of Ohio. The importance of this area is too commonly neglected because it produces only 2 per cent of the total amount of crude produced in the United States. It is, of course, unimportant in its percentage of total crude production, but extremely important for its production of lubricating oil. The lubricating fraction from a barrel of Penllsylvania Grade crude oil represents about 22 per cent of the total, whereas the lubricating fraction from the total United States production represents only about 2.5 per cent of the crude oil. The Pennsylvania Grade area produces about 6,000,000 bbl. of lubricants, which is 15 to 20 per cent of the total produced in the United States. All Pennsylvania Grade lubricants are classified as "high-grade," and with a production of 15 to 20 per cent of the total lubricants, it appears probable that the Pennsylvania Grade area accounts for 25 to 50 per cent of the high-grade lubricants produccd in the United States. Production Bradford Field The production figures quoted in Table I apply only to the part of the Bradford held that lies wholly within the state of Pennsylvania; approximately 15 per cent of the Bradford field is in Cattaraugus County, New York, and 10 per cent of the production is obtained from that sector. The Bradford-field production in 1941 was 12,729,900 bbl. as compared with a production in the year 1940 of 12,748,279 bbl., or a reduction of 18,379 bbl. The year 1941 represents the fourth successive year in which production in the Bradford field has declined. All of the production from the Bradford field is obtained by water-flooding methods and increases or decreases in production are due more to economic factors than to any physical limitations of the pool, inasmuch as additional drilling of water-intake and producing wells would increase the total production of the field. It is apparent that increased drilling of oil and water-intake wells does not take place except under stimulps of a favorable price; and while oil prices during 1941 were moderately favorable, they were not sufficient to prevent a mild decline. Too many wells were drilled in the Bradford field in 1937, but this was compensated by subnormal drilling activities in 1938 and 1939 and a large increase in 1940, The increase in 1941 over 1940 was about 7 per cent. The effect of new drilling is becoming less pronounced on a per well basis because more properties yielding less per acre are being drilled than were drilled in former years. The effect of depth of formation penetration by casing perforations has been studied by means of an electrolytic model. It is found that the relative productivity of perforated casing is profoundly affected by the depth to which the formation is penetrated. The first in. of penetration i: of especial importance. A scaling equation which was shown to agree with experimental results at zero penetration is used to calculate the relative productivity of a waled down casing with scaled down perforations. INTRODUCTION In an earlier piper' the authors showed that the point sink representation of casing perforations is inade- quate. It was Pointed out at that time that while the electrolytic model results were a marked improvement over point-sink calculations, they still left a great deal to be desired in that the electrolytic model represented a case not realizable in practice, namely, a clean hole through the casing but undisturbed formation on the other side of the casing. Obviously, to be effective, the perforation must penetrate a finite distance into the producing formation. It was the purpose of the present investigation to find how the relative productivity of perforated casing varies with depth of penetration. The term "depth of penetration" as used in this paper refers to the distance which the perforation penetrates the producing formation. The amount of casing and cement penetrated is not taken into account, a fact which is discussed more fully later. The "casing radius," therefore, is to be interpreted as the radius of the boundary between cement and formation wall. in cases where the casing is not in contact with the formation wall. APPARATUS The electrolytic model experimental setup was identical with that described in the previous paper' except that the platinum electrodes were now allowed to project from the lucite cylinder by varying amounts. When fewer than eight electrodes were used, the unused ones were covered with a coat of insulating material to minimize disturbances to the current flow-lines. Comparison runs made with the unused electrodes uninsulated, however, showed that the values of Q/Q0 so obtained did not vary by more than the experimental error from the values obtained with the unused electrodes insulated RESULTS The variation of relative productivity* with perforation density is shown for various penetration depths from 0 to 4.03 in. in Fig. 1. It will be seen that even one in. of penetration into the formation results in a huge increase in the relative productivity. Moreover, as-the depth of penetration increases, it becomes less and less advantageous to use large perforation densities, 80 pel. cent of open hole productivity being obtained with only three 0.5-in. diameter holes per foot when the penetration is 4.03 in.

The objectives of his professional endeavor have taken him to many fields; the scenes of his labors have varied from the most remote corners of the globe to those which are close at hand; the universality of his experience is an epitome of modern life, impossible of occurrence in any other era. His career not only embodies to an unrivaled degree the opportunities of the contemporaneous epoch, but also exemplifies in the manner in which they have been transformed into successful accomplishments the pos-sibilities of our age. The many-sided career of our medallist is a composite. Tonight we deal chiefly with its phase for which this medal has been bestowed.

A LTHOUGH a considerable number of experi--ti mental investigations dealing with the roasting of sulfide minerals have been reported in the past,'"" the behavior of the single roasting particle does not appear to have received the attention it perhaps deserves. This is understandable in that the natural sulfide counterpart of the slab or sheet of metal normally used in high temperature oxidation studies is difficult to obtain and prepare, and is, in most cases, virtually impossible to maintain in one piece at roasting temperatures. The employment, on the other hand, of static aggregations of small particles in masses great enough to permit evaluation of the roasting reactions by means of thermobalances or gas analyses introduces other complications, such as localized overheating, sintering, and variable gas-solid contact. In this investigation a compromise between the above extremes was attempted. Closely sized (e.g., 30 to 40 mesh) particles of natural sulfide minerals were isothermally roasted, out of contact with one another, in an air-swept system. The progress of the roasting reactions was followed by examination in polished section of the treated particles and by X-ray and chemical analysis of their residual sulfide kernels. In this way some conclusions respecting the mechanism of roasting reactions were drawn. Roasting Furnace—The vertical tube furnace used for roasting the sulfide particles had a heated zone 10 1/2 in. long in which four retractable light gage stainless steel trays were suspended. Each tray, and an accompanying baffle, was mounted on a 2 in. lengtn of 3/8 in. stainless steel tubing. These assemblies were axially suspended on a 30 in. length of ¼ in. stainless tubing, by means of which they could be lifted from the hot zone to a water-cooled brass chamber at the top of the furnace. Since each tray unit could slide freely on the 30 in. tube, any desired number of the trays could be retained in the cooling chamber by the manipulation of a horizontal plunger during a momentary withdrawal of the four trays from the hot zone. Although three heating coils, each equipped with variable external resistance, were employed, it was found impossible to avoid a drop of 10o to 15oC between the temperature at the top tray and that of the lower three. Consequently, only the bottom three trays were used for roasting. Temperature readings inside the furnace were made by means of a thermocouple inserted down the tray support tube at tray levels, and a separate thermocouple, inserted adjacent to the middle heating coil, was connected to a Micromax temperature control unit. Experimental Method—The sulfide minerals were obtained in a form as free as possible from gangue and contaminating sulfides, and were crushed and screened to the required particle size range. The tray assembly was kept inside the furnace during the heating-up period and, when a steady temperature had been reached, the trays were withdrawn. Each tray was sprinkled with from 200 to 500 mg of the sulfide grains, and the assembly was lowered into the furnace without delay in order to minimize the time required to achieve the operating temperature. The furnace top was then clamped into position and the thermocouple inserted down the center tube to the required level. It was found that, when this procedure was used, the trays achieved their former temperature within 2 min, after which time the flow of dry air was begun at a rate of 1 liter per min, and timing of the run was started. At the required intervals of time the trays were successively withdrawn from the hot zone and stored in the cooling chamber by means of the retention plunger. On completion of the run the treated particles were removed from the trays to be set aside for examination. The roasted particles were mounted in Lucite on a Buehler press Operating at a temperature of 140°C

Examples are presented which show that the velocity~ amplitude, attenuation and apparent frequency of several acoustic waves can be recorded in the borehole. Examination of such recordings, termed "character" logs, indicates that the wave types observed include a refracted compressional wave and a wave which travels with formation shear velocity. Laboratory data are used to show that compressional and shear wave velocities are dependent on porosity, effective stress and lithology; but that the change in reciprocal velocity per unit change in porosity is larger for shear waves than for compressional waves. We, therefore, conclude that. the accuracy of porosity determinations can sometimes be improved by use of shear wave velocities, provided that the shear wave amplitudes are large enough to delineate the shear arrival from the preceding compressional arrival on the character log. Borehole data are presented which show that the difference between shear wave and compressional wave reciprocal velocities can be used to predict porosities. This is a refinement which may allow the prediction of porosities from single-receiver acoustic logs without introduction of errors from borehole fluid traveltimes. Laboratory and field data are presented to show that the relationship between compressional and shear wave velocities can be used to indicate lithology. An example is presented to show that fractures usually cause a greater reduction in borehole shear wave amplitudes than in compressional wave amplitudes, an effect which may offer a more reliable means of detecting fractures. The complexity of the borehole acoustic wave train can rake presently available cement bond logs highly sensitive to the gate and bias settings used. The character log offers a means to circumvent possible misinterpretations by recording all amplitudes, from which the interpreter can select the appropriate data for evaluating the cement bond. Character logs may also be used as a quality control for open-hole transit-time logs when existence of small compressional wave amplitudes interferes with the proper functioning of bias-controlled timing devices. Evaluation of the potential uses of character log data is not complete; but a character log presented in a form convenient for routine use would be a desirable addition to currently available logs. To summarize, possible applications for such a log in formation evaluation include the following (1) quality control of transit-time logs, (2) refinement of porosity predictions, (3) determination of lithology, (4) improvement of fracture detection and (5) improvement of cement bond evaluation. Suggestions are made regarding the requirements for a suficient but practical character log for routine use. INTRODUCTION Acoustic logs have become a widely used porosity tool in formation evaluation. In addition, there is a growing application of acoustic logs in cement bond evaluation and fracture detection. These applications have mainly involved the use of logs of first-arrival transit times and amplitudes and have not included detailed studies of the complete signal. The purpose of this paper is to show that significant benefits in formation evaluation can be gained by a more complete use of the acoustic wave train generated in the borehole by an acoustic logging tool. We hope that this discussion will also stimulate further development of logs suitable for routine use so that these benefits may be realized. Examples of acoustic wave train logs, termed "character" logs, are presented to show that several identifiable acoustic waves are present in the borehole. The measurable characteristics of these acoustic waves and some of their relations to formation properties of interest are also discussed. The more obvious potential uses of character logs are listed, and some suggestions are made regarding the requirements for a sufficient but practical character log for routine use. CHARACTER LOGS Some 10 years ago, Vogel' and Summers and Broding' noted that the signals received uphole from an acoustic logging tool located in a borehole had a number of interesting characteristics. The logging tool consisted of two or more pressure transducers spaced on an acoustically insulated body (Fig. la). One of the pressure transducers was used as a transmitter to generate pressure waves in the borehole fluid. The other transducer served as a receiver to detect any pressure waves reaching it in the borehole. The receiver then converted these pressure waves to electrical signals which were transmitted to the surface and displayed on an oscilloscope as a record of time vs receiver-signal amplitude. Introduction IN View of the recent advance made in the knowledge of the nature and conditions accompanying the occurrence of oil and gas, and of the recent activity in drilling in Wyoming, Montana, and western Canada, a discussion of the probabilities of obtaining production in such a reservoir as the Dakota sand in general, and in particular districts, is thought by the author to be timely and likely to result in more intelligent operating in certain parts of the territory underlain by this sand. In Canada particularly it is thought that these general considerations have equal if not more significance in a consideration of the oil and gas possibilities of the formations than have the various local conditions.

DURING 1910, crude-oil production in the United States reached a record level averaging about 3.700,000 barrels daily. Export declined sharply while imports increased with the result that large quantities of crude oil were run to storage during the year. Imports consisted largely of residual fuel oil brought in from South America bit because of a shortage of that product in this country and of Mexican crude. The price of petroleum products followed the declining trend of the last three year resulting in serious disparity between crude and product prices. This condition was aggravated in some areas by the increasing production of distillate by recycling operations and by the high tanker rates prevalent in the last two months of the year. As a result two small purchasers found it necessary to reduce crude-oil price in the Corpus Christie area of Texas.

Beginning the year 1938, the East and East Central Texas district comprised 48 counties, which is equivalent to the Texas Railroad Commission districts 5 and 6. At the close of the year there were 46 oil and gas fields in this district. Eight other fields, seven oil and one gas, have been abandoned. Beginning the year 1938, the East and East Central Texas district comprised 48 counties, which is equivalent to the Texas Railroad Commission districts 5 and 6. The area producing Pennsylvania-grade crude oil declined sharply in 1943, with a daily average production in the entire area of 71,056 bbl. as against a daily average in 1942 of 77,786. The total decline in the Pennsylvania-grade area amounted to 2,456,311 bbl., and 1,g81,z71 bbl. of this occurrcd within the state of Pennsylvania. The principal decline occurred in the Bradford field, where it was caused primarily by a drastic reduction in well completions. All of the zones in the Pennsylvania-grade producing area showed a decline except the part of Ohio that produces that grade, where production increased very slightly over 1942. Table I shows the average daily production by months for the several districts of the area. Table z is a comparison of the production in the two districts within the state of Pennsylvania. It is interesting to note that the Bradford field produced approximately half the total quantity of Pennsylvania grade but accounted for nearly three-fourths of the decline in production from the previous year. It is believed that this decline is ocasioned by restrictive price ceilings and a lack of adequate manpower to drill the necessary wells to maintain production. Stocks of Pennsylvania Grade At the beginning of 1942, stocks of Pennsylvania-grade crude totaled 3,196,000 bbl. and at the beginning of 1943 they totaled 2,626,000 bbl. Questionnaires and special letters soliciting information were sent to a great many geologists, petroleum engineers, independent operators, and representatives of large companies in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico. Replies to more than 50 per cent. of these letters were received. A survey of the facts and opinions presented in this correspondence will be made a little later, but first some of the general aspects of the problem will be reviewed. By "unit operation,"1 we mean the development and operation of a single entire pool, or reservoir, of petroleum by one management, on a systematic and scientific plan which is best calculated ultimately to extract from the pay sand and bring to the surface of the ground the largest possible amount of oil with the greatest possible total profit. No one, as far as the author has been able to ascertain, denies the advantages, both scientific and practical, of unit operation. All are agreed that it is sound in theory. It permits the proper distribution of wells, which should always be spaced on the ground according to a regular geometric plan with the intention of maintaining the same spacing all the way down and into the pay sand, or pay sands. This spacing will be different for different fields, depending on such variable factors as the lithologic character of the pay formation, the nature of the controlling structure, the depth of drilling, the viscosity of the oil, and so on. From the viewpoint of engineering practice, as applied to economical extraction of oil, there is no more important consideration than well spacing—well spacing in the pay formation, and not merely on the surface of the ground —for the method of well spacing has a direct bearing upon all such engineering practices as pressure control, repressuring by gas, the water drive, and SO on. Fundamental data on the rate of diffusion of boron in austenite and solubility of boron in the a and y phases of iron and steel have been obtained from deboronizing experiments and provide partial explanations for some of the phenomena observed in boron steels. The rate of diffusion of boron is about the same as carbon in austenite. The solubility of boron in austenite at normal heat-treating temperatures is less than 0.001 pct. A partial tentative Fe-B phase diagram in the important low boron concentration ranges and an equation representing the diffusion of boron in austenite are presented. A LTHOUGH a search of the literature revealed ALTHOUGHthat boron diffusion had not been studied quantitatively and systematically prior to 1948, a few qualitative observations which were made by following the diffusion of boron into iron packed in ferro-boron1-3 suggest that boron obeys normal diffusion laws and that the rate of diffusion increases with increasing temperature. The claim of Cornelius and Bollenrath1 that boron does not appear to influence the rate of carbon diffusion has recently been substantiated by Wells, Batz, and Mehl.4 Calculations based on data from the paper by Campbell and Fayv indicated that the diffusion coefficient (D) for boron in iron at 900°C is approximately 3x10 sq cm per sec; a value of 2x10-7 sq cm per sec at 1038°C has been reported by Digges et al in connection with decarburizing experiments on a commercial boron steel containing 0.43 pct C. During the period 1948 to 1950 several diffusivity constant (D) values for the diffusion of boron in the y phase of iron and steel and a number of solubility values for boron in both a and y phases were reported. It was concluded tentatively as a result of Metals Research Laboratory studies that D values for boron in y and a phases are about the same as for carbon in the comparable phasesa and that carbon up to 0.4 pct did not affect the rate of diffusion of boron in y iron above 1000°C within the limits of experimental error. Whether saturation of the y or a phases with carbon would significantly affect rates of diffusion of boron through them was then and still remains in doubt. The best estimate of Q (activation energy) was reported to be about 25,000 cal, somewhat lower than that for carbon in y iron. The solubility of boron in y iron at 1000°C was thought to be higher than 0.004 pct B but not as high as a more recent analysis of available data shows it to be. The solubility of boron in a iron at 700°C was reported to be 0.0004 pct B, but it would not have surprised the authors if the true solubility value is actually lower than this. Breaks in diffusion curves which were not understood when first obtained prior to 1950 have now been recognized as indicating solubility limits, and these are included in the present paper. Experimental Procedure Two methods were employed in an effort to determine diffusion coefficients (D) for boron in austenite. Early experiments involved the use of welded couples prepared in accordance with the procedure of Wells and Mehl,' but when the results of these experiments proved to be unsatisfactory for calculating D values, studies were continued by means of deboronizing experiments. In both cases, boron analyses following the diffusion anneal were carried out spectrographically and all D values were computed using the Grube solution of Fick's law. The precision of the spectrographic method used proved to be about equal to that reported by Corliss and Scribner" —average deviation from the mean about 5 pct of the amount present when the boron content is 0.003 pct. Concentration-penetration curves obtained from spectrographic analyses of welded couples generally indicated that practically no boron was transported across the weld interface during the diffusion anneal. Reliable and detailed statistical data available for Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia are the most meager and unsatisfactory of any of the producing states. Detailed histories and statistics are available for only a few pools. The antiquity of these pools, loose nomenclature, particularly where several names are applied to the same pool or various parts of the pool or a new namsed when the pool was rediscovered, made the collection of accurat historical and statistical data almost impossible. So many of the data reported are unreliable that a breakdown by pools or even by counties, until more accurate information is available, would lead to gross errors. Rather than perpetuate inaccuracies, we have endeavored to go to original sources wherever possible, sift these and provide data that may serve as an incentive and basis for future work. The necessity for accurate information is thoroughly recognized by the operators, particularly because of the effect of recent government regulations and request? for data in connection with the preparation of the various codes a pending legislation. Producers, both major operating companies and individuals, . freely given their time and assistance in the compilation of these data. Valuable information was obtained from tax records, rate cases, statistics published by the oil and gas publications and the Bureau of Mines. So many individuals cooperated in the preparation of these data that individual credit cannot be given. Undoubtedly many errors will be found. Some of the data are open to controversy, and many have been omitted in the hope that new information of a more reliable character may become available. Other omissions are due to an inability to contact the proper individuals, many of whom are no longer connected with this industry. Pennsylvania grade crude sold in 1933 for the lowest price since 1895. Gas production could not find sufficient new markets to fill the void left by industrial stagnation. In the gas industry, where the market price is fixed by contract, uncertainty persisted because of impending legislative action affecting both taxes and utility rates.
