Caving offers the lowest cost per ton of ally large-scale mining method, but its successful application demands an ore body that conforms to several rigid requirements. The deposit must be of wide areal extent, massive and not spotty in ore values, and insensitive to ore dilution. It must also be a rock mass that breaks up readily. There are only three active caving operations in the US-Climax, Henderson, and San Manuel-but caving methods have recently-taken on new importance as deeper, lower grade mineral occurrences and ore bodies are found. These deposits are too deep for surface mining methods, and too low grade to support any type of underground mining except a bulk method such as caving.

The stress to cause a permanent micros train of 2 x 10-6 in. per in. (defined as the microscopic yield stress) in beryllium is found to be very sensitive to surface condition. The initiation of plastic flow in as-machined specimens, which contain a high density of twins and large residual compressive stresses to a depth of about 0.010 in. from the surface, occurs by the nucleation of slip from high stress fields around twin tips in the surface layers. Removal of the damaged surface layers by chemical polishing results in an appreciable increase in the microscopic yield stress, which is attributed to the remoual of stress raising twins rather than to the release of residual stresses. IT is well known that the macroscopic mechanical properties of beryllium are very sensitive to the nature of its surface finish. Matthews and coworkers1 have shown that the tensile strength of rolled beryllium sheet can be considerably enhanced by chemical polishing, presumably due to the removal of the high concentration of notches, twins, and large residual compressive stresses normally found in the surface layers of ground specimens. There was no similar effect of surface condition on the macroscopic yield stress (the stress to produce 0.2 pct strain), a point to which we shall return. To date there have been no extensive studies on the effect of surface condition on the microstrain region of beryllium. Recent measurements2 of the stress to cause a permanent microstrain of the order of 10-6 in. per in. on machined hot pressed QMV beryllium, gave values ranging from about 600 to 3500 psi. Reasons for the considerable scatter in the results were not discussed. In this paper, we wish to show that the microstrain region of polycrystalline beryllium is, in fact, very sensitive to surface condition. The stress to cause a permanent strain of 2 x 10-6 in. per in. which for convenience we will refer to as the microscopic yield stress, can be increased by almost a factor of 2 by minimizing the amount of surface damage. The variation of microscopic yield stress is attributed to the presence of twins in the surface layers, rather than to residual compressive stresses. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting material for this investigation was commercial purity hot pressed QMV beryllium, with an average grain size of about 20 . The effects of surface treatment were assessed by comparing the microstructure with residual stress measurements and microstrain properties. Specimens were prepared for metallographic examination by wet grinding with 240, 400, and 600 papers, followed by polishing with a suspension of fine alumina in warm 20 pct oxalic acid. After this treatment, the surface could be examined, either in the unetched condition with polarized light, or after etching in 2 pct hydrofluoric or boiling 20 pct oxalic acid with normal light. Thin films of beryllium suitable for electron transmission study were prepared from bulk specimens by chemical polishing with hydrofluoric and phosphoric acids, and were examined in an RCA-EMU-3 electron microscope. Residual stress measurements were made by a procedure similar to that of Treuting and Read.3 Specimens 4.0 in. by 0.625 in. by 0.080 in. were prepared by three different machining procedures, namely: turning, grinding, and sawing, in order to introduce different levels of residual stresses. An electrical resistance strain gage was attached to one side of the specimen, and that surface was then protected by an acid-resistant enamel, while the opposite surface was removed by etching approximately one thousandth of an inch at a time. The change in specimen curvature in the longitudinal direction was noted and the residual stress was calculated by the following formula:

The aging characteristics of a titanium alloy containing 13 pct V, I1 pct Cr, and 4 pct A1 have been investigated by hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction, and metallography. The P phase decomposes into 0 + a, and 0 + a, + TiCr, above about 1050°F; below this temperature a transition phase, believed to be w, precipitates first, followed by a, and TiCr,. The observed hardening is attributed to these reactions. Cold working of solution-treated specimens accelerates hardening and raises the hardness level attained. A TTT diagram is proposed. NEW titanium-base alloys, designated as "all-beta," have recently been developed. These alloys contain large amounts of P-stabilizing elements such as molybdenum, chromium, or vanadium. When cooled from the solution temperature, they consist only of P; in particular, the martensitic a,' phase does not form.

TWO American students entered the École des Mines in 1856, Joseph Lesley of Philadelphia and Thomas Egleston of New York. Lesley remained there only one year, but Egleston completed the whole curriculum and received, in 1860, the certificate given to foreign students in lieu of the official appointment and degree awarded French students. Returning home he received, in 1861, an appointment by Secretary Henry of the Smithsonian Institution to sort, label, and arrange the collections of mineralogical and geological specimens which had been brought to Washington by the various government exploring expeditions in the West. Thomas Egleston, born in New York City on Dec. 9, 1832, was the son of Thomas Jefferson Egleston, who came to New York from Massachusetts some time before 1829. The first American ancestor of the family had settled near Dorchester in 1630. T. J. Egleston and Joseph Battell established an iron-merchandizing business* at 166 South St., New York, which prospered exceedingly; so much so that when Thomas J. Egleston died, July. 12, 1861, his estate had a book value of over $500,000. Since an older brother was expected eventually to take over this business, Thomas, who had a liking for science, went to Yale, where he completed the regular four-year course in 1854, and then remained another year for advanced work in chemistry under Silliman. One biographer says he went to Europe, early in 1856, on account of his health. It was the custom at that time for wealthy young men to make a tour of Europe after completing their academic education. Cesium metal isn't on the government's list of priority materials for stockpiling, but it may be getting a big lift in that direction. Both the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) have committed themselves to a long-range research program the outcome of which may boost annual domestic production to 37,000 lb by the year 2000. This would represent a sixfold increase in cesium consumption over the figures reported in 1968. To accomplish this dramatic increase, there must he some equally dramatic breakthroughs. Recent research efforts designed to shake the metal from its lethargic status in world markets have been concentrated in the areas of ion propulsion, thermionic power conversion and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power generation. The activities in these areas, all of which attempt to make use of cesium's unique properties, may lead to a practical method for converting nuclear energy into electricity and a cheaper and more effective alternative to liquid propellants used in long-range space flights.

The development of large diameter rotary drilling techniques and equipment in the last nine years has been the main factor for the rapid advancement made by this method of shaft construction. In 1959, less than 5000 ft of large diameter hole was drilled in the United States for the mining and construction industries. By 1967, large diameter hole footage had increased to 117,000 ft. Part of the increase in footage for holes drilled represents AEC requirements due to the discontinuance of atmospheric testing of nuclear devices. The increase in footage for holes drilled for the mining industry can be attributed to cost savings of shaft construction by rotary methods as compared to conventional blasting methods. Until the late 1950's most large diameter holes were drilled with positive displacement rig pumps or air compressors, direct mud or air circulation, conventional sized oil well drilling strings, and multipass reaming techniques. In some very soft formations it was possible to run a pilot bit with one or more hole openers in tandem to drill the hole in a single pass. The main problem with single pass drilling using tandem hole openers was in providing sufficient circulation fluid for proper hole cleaning through conventional sized drill pipe.

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. The capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. ALTHOUGH the crystallography of lattice transformations has been studied extensively during the past few years, these studies have been limited, with few exceptions1,2, to specimens in which the transformed lattice appears as a, segregate phase. A realization of the technical importance of the segregation mechanism, especially in the formation of martensitic structures and in age-hardening phenomena, has undoubtedly stimulated research in this direction. In the crystallographic studies of segregation, the general problem has been to relate the orientation of the parent crystal to that of the segregate crystals. The technique has been complicated by the fact that it has been necessary to deal with the presence of as many as 24 ideal segregate orientations within one parent lattice; furthermore, the segregate lattices are invariably scattered (seldom less than ±2°, often as much as 15° or 20°) about these ideal positions. It is probable that a more complete picture of phase transformations may result from a study in which complete lattice relationships between individual grains are evaluated, thereby providing an additional param-eter which, when it is necessary to work with multiple segregate-orienta-tions, cannot be evaluated. The present paper presents the results of such a study, ? wherein a peritectic reaction is made use of to produce the transformed lattices.

DURING the last three or four years I have had occasion to examine, chemically, various samples of matter commonly called flue-dust or cinder, found deposited in the flues and hot-blast chambers and under the boilers of blast furnaces, and also in the flues and under the boilers of puddling and boiling furnaces. Recently several of these examinations were made quite in detail, and as the results reveal, I believe, information of no inconsiderable importance, I am induced to communicate them to this Institute. A sample of deposit obtained from the flues of one of the blast furnaces at the works of the Phoenix Iron Company, at Phoenixville, Pa., was found to have the composition given in Column I of the following table

Some years ago the writer was struck by what might be called the remarkable vitality of the Virginia furnaces during the panic of 1893; and attention was called to the fact in the American Manufacturer of February 8,1895. From the second half of 1892, which was a period of maximum output, to the second half of 1893, when the full effects of the depression had been reached, the output of pig-iron had fallen off in Illinois 85; in New York, 66; in Ohio, 51; in Tennessee, 44; in Pennsylvania, 28; and in Virginia only 15 per cent. It seemed a reasonable inference that the State which had thus shown its marked ability to meet hard times could make and market its product with a larger margin of profit than any of the other States. This was true at that time, and to a certain extent the reasoning still holds good; but my mistake was in not fully realizing the marked effect of the Mesabi development, combined with reduced economies in transportation, and the consequent advantage to those furnaces which were so situated as to utilize these new commercial factors. The effect of these factors is seen in comparing the second half of 1894 with the second half of 1892. New York had dropped off 44, Alabama 23, Tennessee 21, Illinois 19, and Virginia 16 per cent., while Pennsylvania had increased 5 and Ohio 10 per cent. While there is no question of the great economy which has been made possible for certain interests which are peculiarly situated with reference to the ores of the Northwest, it is yet too early to say what furnaces not so fortunate will have to pay for their raw material. Already an increase of twenty cents per ton of ore has been announced, based upon increased cost of production.

The Interior Department has been in a state of disarray for many months. At first this was attributed to Interior Secretary Walter Hickel's inability to anticipate how his words would be interpreted by Press-Radio-TV. But then the already disquieted ernployees in the Department became aware that plans were afoot to take bits and pieces of the various antipollution programs from Interior; Health, Education and Welfare: the Atomic Energy Commission and other agencies and lump them together into a new Federal agency. Interior, many predicted, would be a shell of its former robust self. Hardly had this rumor started to add to employee uneasiness before the other big shoe hit the floor. The new rumor had it that the Bureau of Mines was being stripped of most of its research functions and that the Office of Coal Research and allied research groups would be abolished altogether.

INTRODUCTION IT is the purpose of this paper to set forth the relation and functions of the various organizations and institutions engaged in the promotion of safety iii the iron mines of the Lake Superior region; also to indicate the value of this work. Ten to 15 years ago there was practically no organized safety work; the accident rate was high, excessively so in some districts, and dangerous practices and conditions existed in many of the mines. During recent years, however, a gradual change for the better has been made. The chief causes of this change have been (a) public opinion, which has set the stamp of disapproval on the disregard for human life; (b) certain State laws which have made the operators responsible in dollars and cents for injuries to workmen; and (c) the humanitarian attitude of many of the operators, who have always decried the great loss of life in the mines. Today the Lake Superior region as a whole stands second to no other metal-mining district in the United States in its efforts to promote the welfare and safety of the miner. Dangerous practices in and about the mines are fast disappearing. The operators are ready and eager to adopt any expedient, rule, or device that holds forth a reasonable promise of reducing the hazards of the miner. Today the value of a mine captain or shift boss is reckoned, not alone on his ability to "get the ore," but also on his capacity for reducing accidents. While the progress made has been remarkable, there still remains much to be done, for the accident records of the Lake Superior iron mines, while lower than those of the chief metal-mining regions of the United States, still compare unfavorably with those of the metal mines of practically all foreign countries.

The information in this paper was collected by the author during a five years' residence in the State of Minas Geraes. Outside the State itself, very little is known of the gold-field. Such accounts as have been published are antiquated and contained in publications mostly out of print. The increased attention now attracted to the natural resources of Brazil, and the probability that American capital will be, in the near future, largely invested there, will make an up-to-date account specially useful at this time. I. Historical and General. Soon after the Jesuits founded what is to-day the city of S?o Paulo, gold was discovered in the streams of the neighborhood; and this incited the natives, known as paulistas, to look for it farther afield. After many expeditions into the interior, gold was found in quantity in placer-deposits in the vicinity of Ouro Preto, in 1699, by a prospecting party headed by Antonio Dias. The name of Ouro Preto (black gold) was given because of the superficial dark coating of the gold, and the inhabitants of the district were known as mineiros (miners). Later on, the placers of Cuiaba, in the State of Matto Grosso, were discovered in 1718, and those of the State of Goyaz in 1724. All this territory was at the time a private colony, but on account of its increasing importance it was taken over by the Crown, and in 1739 a royal governor was appointed, with his nominal capital in S?o Paulo, though for a number of years the real capital was Ouro Preto. In 1711 Ouro Preto was raised to the rank of a city, with the name of Villa Rica de Ouro Preto (" rich city of black gold"); and in 1720, by reason of administrative difficulties, Minas Geraes was constituted a separate colony from S?o Paulo, with Villa Rica as its capital. A mathematical model of the Western Holdings gold concentrator in South Africa was generated by multiple regression analysis of routine plant operating data. Interpretation of the computer results and application of the model indicated that significant economic improvement in gold recovery could be realized by relatively minor modifications to the circuit. The modifications made are described and the economic benefits resulting from the increased gold production are assessed. Comparison, of the projections of the mathematical model with actual plant performance is illustrated.
