Great Salt Lake brine was subjected, in laboratory scale, to conditions simulating solar evaporation. Solid phases and the variation in composition of the liquid phase throughout the potassium salts crystallization zone are presented. These experimental results are discussed and compare with stable equilibrium data of the quinary system Cl-, SO4, Na+, K+, Mg + + and H2O. The Great Salt Lake brine in Utah is a vast reserve of several potential chemicals which has attracted much attention in the recent past. From the standpoint of an ore reserve, it may be said that the lake contains a low grade ore which has to be concentrated by evaporation of water. Because of the fairly favorable weather conditions in the Great Salt Lake area, it seems reasonable to consider solar evaporation as an economical means of concentration. From the view of phase chemistry, the main constituents of Great Salt Lake brine make it belong to the five component system: C1-, SO4=, Na+, K+, Mg++ and H2O. Because of their low concentration, the presence of other elements may be regarded as having little effect on the equilibrium of the five main components. Equilibrium data for the quinary system of our interest has been available for many years. Using these data, it is possible to calculate how the brine of the lake will concentrate when subjected to solar evaporation. In practicing solar evaporation, the weather factor and supersaturation conditions cannot be ignored, but their introduction into calculations using equilibrium diagrams is almost an impossible task. With the experimental work presented in this paper, an attempt is made to compare the stable equilibrium data of the quinary system as applied to the case of the Great Salt Lake brine and the dynamic equilibrium when that brine is subjected to continuous solar evaporation. Sea water brine belongs to this quinary system when only the major constituents are considered. The study of this system has been carried on since the last decades of the nineteenth century. The reason for these intensive studies was to give a geological explanation to the underground potash deposits. AS a result, many theories were presented trying to relate the equilibrium data with the geological formation, paragenesis and metamorphism of these deposits. Two main approaches were followed for the equilibrium studies of this quinary system. One of them, and the best known to us, was the school started in Germany in the last century by J. H. Van't Hoff. The other one, which started about the same time, was the school of N. S. Kurnakov in Russia. Both approaches were different and as a consequence generated opposite theories about the geological formation of potash deposits. The Van't Hoff school studied the quinary system of sea water under careful laboratory control, resulting in stable phase diagrams. During these studies, Van't Hoff recognized the difficulties in crystallizing some double salts.' ". . . . we unexpectedly found that some compounds whose formation in the solutions under investigation was possible at 25°C, nevertheless totally failed to put in an appearance. These, not to mention the calcium salts, were leonite, MgSO4 . K2SO4 4 H2O; kainite, KC1-MgSO4 . 3 H2O; and kieserite, MgSO4 .H2O. Even exceedingly slow crystallization with the addition of the compounds themselves did not remove the condition of supersaturation in the case of these bodies." However, those salts (leonite, kainite, and kieserite) were included in the stable phase diagram at 25°C as shown in Fig. 1 using D'Ans data.3 The figure also shows the sequence of crystallization of the Great Salt Lake brine according to the stable diagram. J.--It requires a good deal of timber to operate, especially the caving systems. An important function in mine operations now seems to be forestry and to operate a timber tract in order to insure a supply of timber. By depleting the timber resources of your section, you only increase your costs later when timber must be brought in from the Pacific Coast or the East. Our experience has been that any square-set method of timbering is the most expensive. Timbering for stoping systems, top slicing if you will, although it uses a large volume of time does not require as expensive timbering as the square-set method; also it does not require as long a life for-the timber, so that such wood as birch and maple, which have strength but not long life under the fungus conditions in the mine, may be used. All the drifts in the orebody are thoroughly timbered, and it has required a lot of timber. If we had it to do over, we would spend a lot more money in the development of rock drifts; as a matter of fact, we must ultimately come to that any way.

When Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, no one knew what black powder was except the Chinese: they knew enough to make dazzling fireworks with it. But the realization that black powder could also do useful work came much later and, like all important discoveries, it altered the course of history. It was in the 14th century that black powder was first used to break rock in a very crude way: there were no drills and the powder was simply poured into cracks and exploded by setting it afire. Because its energy value was pretty low, the need for something more powerful was felt when the industrial revolution arrived.

Although wildcatting was hampered by the general overproduction and low price of crude, several developments, worthy of note in the history of the petroleum industry in the Rocky Mountain region, were made in 1927. This district records production from six new fields, two of these having been heretofore productive of gas. Deeper pay horizons were found in two other oil fields. In order to facilitate transportation from fields, six new oil pipe lines were completed or in the course of construction at the end of the year, and one line is proposed for 1928. Four gas lines were completed, one was under construction, and one was proposed for 1928. The total production in 1927 in the Rocky Mountain district was 29,591,379 bbl.,' a decrease of 7,771,991 bbl., or 21 per cent., fro111 the previous year. This was occasioned by natural decline and the general curtailment of production and drilling. A review of the development by states follows. Colorado Production from horizons in the Morrison and Sundance at Craig and at Ilrs Dome, and the bringing in of the deepest producing well in the Rocky Mountain district on North McCalluin anticline (Waltlrn) in Jackson County are the outstanding developments for the year in Colorado. In March the Midwest Refining Co.'s Parkinson 21 SD, SW SE, Sec. 22 T p. 4 N R 92 W, Iles Domr, Moffat County Colorado, found gas in sands in the Morrison estimated at 15,000,000 cu. ft., and at 3242 ft. an oil sand was encountered in the Sundance. Initial production from this horizon was 2575 bbl. in this well. This structure previously was only productive of water in the sands of the Dakota group but has been producing shale oil from horizons in the Benton. The second well completed by the Midwest Refining Co., No. 18 SD in Sec. 23 was also productive of gas in the Morrison and made an initial of 300 bbl. from sands in the Sundance. This Committee, formerly known as the Membership Committee, had its title changed as above by the new Constitution which was adopted February, 1928. During the year 1928, 607 applications for membership were submitted to the Committee for its action; and after careful consideration 601 were recommended to the Board of Directors for election to the various grades. Of this number 597 accepted election and became members during 1928. The changes in the membership resulting therefrom are set forth in tabular form on the following page. The Atlanta Mine is located in east central Nevada, in Lincoln County, 116 km (72 miles) south of Ely and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the old mining town of Pioche. From this famous district, high-grade copper ore was mined and shipped to a smelter in Wales in the 1850s; an early day lead blast furnace was also in operation. The Standard Slag Company began operations in May 1975 on the well known Atlanta Mine, which was operated by Roy Hardy in the 1930s. The mill is currently processing 450 mtpd (500 stpd) of gold-silver bearing ore. Mining by open pit is in a brecciated zone occurring between limestone-dolomites on the foot wall and tertiary rhyolites on the hanging wall. The quartz breccia is considered among the most abrasive in the world - shovel teeth must be replaced every week. Stripping ratio is 3.9 to 1.0. Because of the hard abrasive ore, the crushing plant consists of four units: two jaw crushers in series, one Hydrocone, and one Gyradisc. Mine feed to the primary crusher is limited to 610 mm (24 in.) in size. The remaining crushers work in closed circuit with screens to produce a mill feed of 6 to 13 mm (0.25 and 0.50 in.). Hardness of the ore is demonstrated by the fact that the reversible liners of the primary jaw crusher had to be replaced in early 1978 after handling only 39,000 mt (44,000 st) at a cost of $0.095 per mt ($0.086 per st). Another example of the extreme abrasiveness of the breccia ore was the total cost per ton in 1977 for all wear parts in the comminution circuit, including screens and grinding media. This amounted to $2.84 per mt ($2.58 per st). The Atlanta grinding plant consists of three ball mills to grind the 7 mm (1 /4 in.) crushing plant product to 85 to 90% minus 150 microns (100 mesh). Feed rate to the primary Tricone mill is determined by maintaining a cyclone overflow at 28 to 38% solids, which controls the grind mentioned above. A mixture of 90 and 65 mm (3.5 and 2.5 in. ) balls are charged to this primary mill. Both the secondary mills are charged with 50 mm (2 in ) balls. Total ball consumption is 2 kg per mt (4 lb per st). All three ball mills use rubber liners. Primary mill cyclone underflows are fed to the secondary mills close circuited with the same cyclones.

Some statements have already been made to the Institute in reference to the cost of other departments of the above-named works, and some details have been given in tabular form.* For the purpose of the present paper it may be sufficient to say that this converting works is made up of three buildings, a cupolahouse, an engine-house, and a converting-house. The machinery and fixtures comprise two blowing-engines, two pressure-pumps, two five-ton converters, five hydraulic cranes, three pig-iron cupolas, four spiegel cupolas, two lifts for the cupolas, together with the usual arrangements of smaller parts. Every effort was made in the construction to combine efficiency of operation with durability, and the general course of the operation of the works during two and a half years seems to warrant the belief that the large outlay has been fully justified. * In the accompanying tabular statement all items on vouchers less than ten dollars, and all freight items have been omitted.

DIFFERENTIAL thermal analysis measurements have been used to determine the ZnTe-In2Te3 pseudo-binary phase diagram. Since ZnTe and In2Te3 are both semiconductors, any intermediate compounds formed in this system should also be semiconductors according to the rules delineated by Mooser and pearson.1 The compound ZnIn2Te4 was first reported by Hahn et a1.2 and it has subsequently been prepared and characterized electrically by several workers. A brief summary of this work has been presented by Mason and O'Kane3 who also report that the compound appeared to melt peritec-tically. The Zn-Te phase diagram has been investigated by Kulwicki4 who found that ZnTe has a melting point of 1290° + 2°C. The In-Te diagram published in Hansen' contains significant errors, and has been redetermined by Grochowski et al.6 However, both sources agree that the melting point of In2Te3 is 667°C, with the latter authors reporting the previously observed solid-solid transformation occurring at about 550°C. One aspect of ocean mining that is frequently overlooked in discussions is the problem of establishing some form of legal control over the seas. Much of the discussion centers on mining in territorial waters, which are controlled by the various countries according to the Geneva Convention on the Continental Shelf, and perhaps by political subdivisions of countries such as the individual states of the U.S. But as technology improves and the mining of deeper waters becomes feasible, the problem of rights outside the continental shelf and territorial waters becomes a significant factor for anyone expending the time and capital for development. Several schemes are possible for regulating ocean mining but as yet none have been instituted, except what might be termed the "wait and see" approach. Even some of the coastal states in the U.S. have no regulations governing mining in the territorial waters under their jurisdiction. Until some regulation is formulated, there may well be little development in ocean mining due to the high risk of capital involved, both with respect to companies wishing to invest their own funds and financial institutions funding a venture to develop offshore mineral deposits.

The successful production of zinc white or oxide on a commercial scale in this country dates from the issue of the patent of Samuel Wetherill, for the preparation of the material (November, 1855), and

mean to say that these explosions are mechanical, but that the ejectment of the stock, throwing out of tops, etc., are mechanical. I see no reason at present, although I have had almost no experience in the use of large quantities of Mesabi ore, to change my ideas on the subject. That these explosions should follow irregular working or slipping in the furnace, I think can be explained. I have noticed that immediately following slips there is little or no settling of the stock on top, although there is no lessening of the volume of gas passing into the stoves and boilers. Supposing that, after a slip of 3 or 4 feet, the filling continues, but for some distance from the 'top the stock fails to move: there would be a much better chance for the deposited carbon to clog interstices in the stock, and for the additional effect in the same direction of the fine ore in the charge, than if the stock were properly settling. Under such conditions it is easily supposable that the openings would be entirely closed, or closed so tightly that the pressure below the obstruction would be raised to a point approaching the blast-pressure, or to a point high enough to force a passage or an enlargement of the small passages which may remain. When this occurs, gas from below under pressure carries with it large quantities of deposited carbon and fine ore; if the case is aggravated, coke, stone, bell, etc. As soon as the red-hot deposited carbon meets the air there are perfect conditions for a dust explosion, which naturally follows, the same as in a coal-mine or flour-mill.
