A computer program was written to predict the phase behavior generated by the enriched-gas-drive process. This program is based, in part, on a new concept of convergence pressme, which is then used to select vapor - liquid equilibrium ratios (K-factors) for performing a series of flash calculations. The results of these calculations are the equilibrium vapor and liquid phase compositions which define the phase envelopes. The program was used to predict phase envelopes for 11 different hydrocarbon systems on which published experimental data were available. The predicted and experimental results compare favorably. INTRODUCTION The reservoir engineer is frequently faced with the problem of predicting what will happen if gas is injected into a reservoir. One aspect of this, general problem is predicting the phase changes that will occur when a non-equilibrium gas displaces a reservoir fluid. In particular, a "dry" gas, upon displacing a volatile oil, will pick up intermediate components from the oil. On the other hand, a "wet" gas, containing a high concentration of intermediates, will lose some of these components to a relatively low-gravity, non-eouilibrium1- crude. It is this latter Drocess. occurring in the enriched-gas displacement, which is treated in this paper. In the past, these phase changes have been determined experimentally and the results incorporated into various modifications of the Buckley-Leverett analysis.112 Such experimental work is time consuming, and the results are sensitive to numerous experimental errors. With the wide availability of high-speed digital computing equipment and numerous correlations pertaining to the vapor-liquid equilibria of hydrocarbon systems, it is now practical to calculate such phase behavior. This paper describes a computer program for performing these calculations. THE ENRICHED GAS DISPLACEMENT PROCESS Experimental results have shown that oil recovery can be significantly increased by enriching the displacing gas with intermediate hydrocarbon c0m~onents.3 The essential features of the phase behavior generated by this enriched-gas-drive process are commonly illustrated with ternary diagrams such as Fig. 1.4 In this figure, Gas D, which contains a high concentration of intermediate hydrocarbons with respect to the undersaturated Crude A, is injected into the reservoir. When D contacts A, gas goes into solution until the oil becomes saturated (Point. B). Further contacting of Gas D and saturated Oil B results in a Mixture C which separates into Vapor Y(c) and Liquid X(c). Liquid X(c) is contacted by additional Gas O, resulting in Mixture E which separates into Vapor Y(e) and Liquid X(e). Repeated contacts of the liquid by the injected gas will eventually result in Liquid X(4 of maximum enrichment existing in equilibrium with Gas Y(d). The equilibrium tie-line X(4 Y(4, when extended, passes through the Point D representing the enriched injection gas. For systems of more than three components, the predicted equilibrium states are dependent upon not only reservoir temperature and pressure, but also the compositions of the crude oil and injected gas. If the gas is sufficiently enriched, a miscible displacement is generated. Line If is tangent to the phas,e envelope at the critical point (Point Z) and represents the limiting slope of the tie-lines as the critical state is approached. Point 1 therefore represents the minimum enrichment of injection gas required to generate a miscible displacement. Point G represents the minimum enrichment required for initial miscibility of the injection gas with Crude A. SUPPLEMENTING surveys of the engineering profession regarding salaries and advancement, based upon data from individual engineers, a survey through a questionnaire to employers of engineers has recently been made by a subcommittee of the Engineers Joint Council's Committee on the Economic Status of the Engineer. Its object was to learn directly from employers their attitudes and policies pertaining to the selection, training, placement, advancement, guidance, and professional activities of engineering graduate employes. The questionnaire was sent in May 1946 to 174 employers of engineers, including colleges. Replies were received from 104 employers in nineteen fields of industry, who employ about 2,000,000 persons, about 40,000 of whom are engineers. The following general observations are based on the questionnaires returned. Who Are Hired? Of the co-operators 96 per cent employ cadet engineers directly upon graduation from engineering schools, but only 4 per cent recruit their engineering staffs exclusively from the new graduates. About 43 per cent hire more than half of their new engineer employes after one or more years' experience with other employers. This is evidently a matter of necessity or expediency rather than preference, because more than sixty per cent of those reporting indicate that they prefer to hire the new graduate.

DURING 1943, supplies of lead, like those of most base metals, moved from a position of scarcity to one of ample supply for all possible war requirements. The principal worry in the market, as 1944 began, was that surplus stocks might increase too rapidly to maintain price stability. The problem of postwar stockpiling had definitely entered the picture. The end of the year finds the lead industry having met all use demands, but not without depleting stocks to a critical low in spite of heavy importations. The principal reason for this dangerously reduced stock position is lack of adequate man power, which, without question, has become the lead industry's number one problem. This condition became obvious about the middle of the year, after Selective Service placed in effect orders that no deferments would be given employees under 26 years of age, and to a complacent attitude toward the industry assumed by the War Manpower Commission. It has become progressively worse since then. The WPB continued its policy, started during 1943, of easing restrictions on materials to be used for maintenance, repairs, and operating supplies. The policy of premium payments established by the Metals Reserve Co. was continued and, in spite of expressions to the contrary, has proved quite satisfactory. In short, the Government continued its program of stimulating the lead industry in practically all

INTRODUCTION Hitachi Refinery of Nippon Mining Co., Ltd. was constructed in 1911. The refinery began early to recover by-product metals and to manufacture copper products. Today, the refinery recovers gold, silver, selenium, platinum and palladium as by-products of the copper refining process and manufactures copper powder, copper foil, wire bars and chemicals for plating. In 1969, the capacity of the Hitachi Refinery reached 6,000 tons/month. (T/M). Because, at that time, the forecast was for the demand for copper in Japan to increase, planning for the expansion of the Hitachi and Saganoseki refineries was begun. A new 10,000 T/M capacity tank house, a new electrolyte purification plant and a enlarged anode slime treatment plant were planned for the Hitachi Refinery. Construction at the Hitachi Refinery began in December, 1970, and was completed in April, 1974. The development of new machines and processes has resulted in an efficient refinery with a production capacity of 16,000 TIM. This paper is a report on the new anode slime treatment plant at the Hitachi Refinery, and especially on the copper removal process in that plant, the Ferric Leaching Process.

THE-Institute of Metals Division opened on Tuesday afternoon with Wheeler P. Davey as chairman and G. E. Edmunds as vice-chairman. Four papers were on the program, two being of a fundamental character. A paper on "Internal Surface in Minerals and Metals," by R. S. Dean and J. Roster, was presented by the latter; C. H. Gottschalk discussed coercive forces in powders. In answer to a question by the chairman. The author stated that he had not investigated [he temperature coefficient of resistance. A paper on "Recrystallization and Grain Growth in Cold Worked Polycrystalline Metals," by L. W. Eastwood, Arthur E. Bousu, 'and C. T. Eddy, was presented by Mr. Eastwood. A. great many quantitative data were given, with little reference to the theory. Theoretical considerations were discussed by Dr. Gottschalk, and C. A. Edwards of the University College of Wales, contributed very interesting comment on the relationship of size and critical strain. Dr. Edwards discussed the necessity of considering strain with time and temperature.

The ammonium sulphate process for recovering alumina from clays was proposed by Rinman, Buchner, and others many years ago, and more recently various modifications have been investigated both here arid abroad.l-Is The process, as it is being investigated by the Bureau of Mines, involves the following essential steps: (I) sulphating the alumina in the clay by baking with ammonium sulphate at approximately 4m°C., (2) leaching with water to extract aluminum sulphate and ammonium sulphate, (3) crystallization of ammonium alum, (4) conversion of the alum to aluminum hydroxide by the ammonia gases given off during the baking, and (5) calcining the aluminum hydroxide to alumina. The over-all reaction between kaolinite (the most important alumina mineral in most clays) and ammonium sulphate during the baking step may be expressed as follows: Al2O8.2SiO2.2H2O + 4(NH4)2SO4 = (NH4)2SO4.A12(SO4)3 + 6NH3(g) + SH2O(g) + 2SiO2 [i] There is definite evidence. as is shown later. that the aluminum occurs in the baked product as anhydrous ammonium alum rather than as aluminum sulphate, provided the baking temperature is not much above 4o0°C. It is probable that the reaction takes place in the following steps: (NH4)2SO4 = NH3 -(- NH4HSO4 [2] Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O + ;}NH4HSO4 = A12(SO4)3 + 3NH3 + 5H2O + 2SiO2 [3] A12(SO4)3 + (NH4)2SO4 = (NH4)2SO4.A12(SO4)3 [4] In onc modification of the process, the ammonium sulphate is first decomposed according to Eq. z, and the clay is treated with the resultant ammonium acid sulphate. Reaction I is highly endothermic. On the basis of the best available data, the following values have been estimated for the changes in heat content and free energy in calories per mol: -AH = 331,040 - 34T -AF = 331~040 - 78.3T log T - 671.8T The heat required' at 25OC is 320,900 cal. per mol, or 5650 B.t.u. per pound of alumina. The theoretical equilibcium pressure of NHa, based on the free-energy equation given above, increases very rapidly as the temperature rises above 3o0°C., and reaches one atmosphere at 43s°C. Ammonium alum solutions are almost ideal for crystallization. A saturated solution of ammonium alum contains 126. grams of AlzOa per 1000 grams of water at 90°C. and only 16.5 at 20 C. AT the December Board meeting, the report of the William Lawrence Saunders Medal Committee, recommending the award of the medal to John Hays Hammond, was received and unanimously approved. The citation is: "For his notable work as an engineer and developer of mines at home and abroad, his industrial leadership and his public services." The medal will be presented as usual during the meeting in February, presumably at the annual dinner at the Waldorf, on Feb. 20. The other medals to be given on the same occasion are the James Douglas, which goes to Paul D. Merica, and the Robert W. Hunt, which is awarded this year to Edgar C. Bain, as already announced. This will be the third award made of the Saunders Medal for "Achievement in Mining," previous recipients having been David W. Brunton in 1927, and Herbert Hoover in 1928. The list is a distinguished one and Mr. Hammond's name is appropriately included. His career is so widely known that it is not necessary to repeat the account, published in MINING AND METALLURGY last April.

In considering so complex a process as the smelting of iron in the blast furnace, there is obviously no single method of calculating efficiency that gives a complete appraisal of the performance of the furnace in all its several functions; such a comprehensive view as is required to evaluate producing ability and manufacturing costs for a given furnace is obtained only by considering a group of efficiencies, each of which measures the performance of the furnace from a specific point of view. For instance, there is the rate of consumption of coke per ton of iron produced, which is probably the most frequently considered, and is certainly one of the most important of the group; there is the efficiency of recovery of iron charged; and there is the efficiency of utilization of energy, both chemical and thermal, in some respects related to the former two yet in other ways independent of either. In each of these cases, the calculation can be made on the basis of the actual input of material or energy, or it may be based upon a comparison with the minimum amount of material or energy that would be required by a "perfect" furnace; that is, an imaginary ideal furnace analogous to the perfect steam engine used in thermodynamic calculations, when this furnace is operating under optimum conditions. Moreover, the furnace itself can be considered either as an apparatus for smelting iron or, taking a somewhat less common point of view, as a gas producer yielding iron and slag as by-products. Some of these efficiencies are more useful than others, yet all are instructive; for a knowledge of them not only leads to good engineering practice from the standpoint of control but also discloses limits to possible improvement in performance and indicates the lines along which improvement is most likely to be profitable. Estimates of some of these efficiencies have appeared from time to time in the literature, but many of them are open to objection because they are based on data of uncertain accuracy or because they have been caleulated without due regard to the thermodynamic principles involved. Moreover, so far as the author is aware. no general survey of the blast furnace comparing its performance in all the aspects mentioned has been made.

WITH the exception of lead sulphate, all common metallic sulphates are completely decomposed upon heating into metallic oxide, sulphur trioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Some give up their trioxide readily at a low temperature, others require considerable heat and much time to be completely freed from sulphur. Kerl in 1881 arranged the principal metallic sulphates as they are decomposed by a rising temperature in the following order: silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese and lead, lead sulphate being decomposed only slightly at a white heat. The researches of Bradford, published in 1903, show, however, that ferrous sulphate is decom¬posed at 590° C., cupric sulphate at G53° C. and argentic sulphate at 1,095° C. By the present investigation it will be seen that zinc sulphate is decomposed at 739° C. As far then as our present knowledge goes, the order in which the decomposition of the leading metallic sulphates takes place is the one given in Table I.

DAVID COLE, EL PASO, TEXAS (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with great interest Dr. Gahl's painstaking paper giving us the details of development of flotation at Inspiration, and it seems to me that he has covered the ground so completely that there is little to discuss or criticize in connection with his subject. While it was in operation, the test mill in which the campaign was carried on was the Mecca of mill men and metallurgists. There was much to interest students of milling methods in addition to the flotation experiments, and readers of Dr. Gahl's paper will miss the information they hoped to get when the "pilot" mill results were. finally compiled, and I hope that the following remarks outlining from a distance some of the things that happened there will bring forth the rest of the story of the performances recorded in these important experiments. Prior to the use of flotation methods in concentration it had long been recognized that the "unavoidable" losses of sulphides were in the slime which is inevitably produced in the grinding operations required to free the minerals to be separated. Classifying the feed prior to its final stage of treatment had long been in style in milling. This assisted the sand-handling machines and resulted in lowering the tailings made by them, but at the expense of the slime-handling department; and while little was expected of the latter, the wisdom of complicating the process by hydraulic classification was being seriously questioned. It is quite conceivable that the question of using coal or an alternate fuel in the future by large industrial consumers may be decided on the basis of possible profitable utilization of flyash. Accordingly, the Coal Research Bureau at West Virginia University has been attempting to develop new uses for this waste material. This effort has resulted in the development of a process for producing flyash-based face brick and other structural materials which generally exceed published specifications for competitive clay-based materials. These structural materials, containing up to 97% waste coal ash, can be produced from flyash derived from most coals without regard to the physical or chemical properties of the coal ash. Preliminary production cost estimates indicate that face brick can be manufactured at a rate of 9000 brick per hr or more with a resultant gross profit of over $24.00 per thousand brick. Plant payout time for a plant of this size would be only about 1.2 years assuming a market price of approximately $55.00 per thousand, a well established figure for comparable clay brick. With flyash production expected to more than double in the next 15 years, there is an increasing need for a practical and Profitable method for the utilization of large tonnages of this material (see Table I listing total flyash production of utilities in each state of the U.S.). Present industrial and governmental physical and chemical restrictions, particularly for use as a lightweight filler or pozzolanic material, have limited the use of flyash considerably. For those ashes which have met the required standards, utilization is not always assured because of lack of promotion and poor public acceptance. Less than 6% of the total flyash production in the U.S. was sold in 1962. The remainder was dumped in disposal areas at costs as high as $2.42 per ton.' It is quite conceivable that in the near future the question of using coal or an alternate fuel by large industrial consumers may be decided on the basis of the possible utilization of flyash. THE relation of annealing temperature to conductivity of copper wire has been determined. Conductivity hard was 98.26 per cent. After a 10-min. heating at 200°C. it was 98.69. By annealing 10 min. at 300° C. a large increase, to 100.93, occurred. Maximum conductivity, 101.15, was attained after a 500° C. anneal; thereafter it decreased to 100.53 after a 950° C. anneal. If copper is gassed the decrease is much more than this. Materials and Methods The work was done on high grade electrolytic copper, 99.942 per cent. copper plus silver, silver 0.0008 per cent. It was hot-rolled to >/4 in., then cold drawn to 0.080 in. The wire was cut into 25 5-ft. lengths and numbered 1 to 25 as cut. Four samples were tested hard. The others were wound into 5-in. diameter coils. For the 100° C. heating a coil was put into water, the water brought to boiling, and the wire kept at this temperature for 10 min. For the higher temperatures the coils were placed in envelopes of sheet copper, a little water added, and the envelopes sealed by folding over the edges twice, and hammering them together. This kept the air out very well. The envelope and wire 'were brought to the desired temperature; this was maintained for 10 min., then the whole was water-quenched.

A need for new supplies of fresh water exists today and in many specific areas that need is urgent. One solution lies in saline water conversion, a problem complicated by cost factors. The principles involved in saline water conversion, the status of development, and the estimated costs (present and future) of several processes are presented. Among the methods discussed are distillation, electrodialysis, and freezing. In general, the costs presented are based on a standardized procedure for estimating conversion costs, permitting a valid comparison among the various processes. The need for new supplies of fresh water and the potential benefits to be derived from an abundant supply of converted water are recognized by practically everyone concerned with water problems. The water supply problem exists today; it is urgent in many specific areas in this country and also in the world, and it will become more acute in the future. One answer to the growing problem of adequate water supplies is the development of new sources. Very significant quantities of brackish underground and surface waters exist in certain areas and an inexhaustible supply of ocean water is available. Thus in many areas water resources can be extended through saline water conversion. Congress recognized the need for new sources of fresh water in 1952 and passed the Saline Water Act, Public Law 448, amended it in 1955, and in September 1958, enacted Public Law 85-883, calling for the construction of at least five demonstration plants. The program is administered by the Dept. of Interior through the Office of Saline Water, and its primary objective is to reduce the cost of converted water produced, whether it be by development of new processes or improvement of known processes. This is a most difficult problem and one that will require several years of prodigious effort. It is difficult—not because of any intricate or new chemistry, engineering, or physics involved—but because of the difficulty in converting water at low cost. Whatever the sources of the saline water, the salts which are held tenaciously in solution must be removed before the water becomes suitable for industrial or domestic uses. Saline water is a relatively simple system of salts dissolved in water. It has certain chemical and physical properties that determine the various methods by which the salts may be separated from the water. The system, although not complex, in most instances, has had countless years in which to reach equilibrium and is, therefore, comparatively stable. Because of its stability, separation of saline solutions requires relatively large quantities of energy. The unique properties of water depend on the fact that its molecules are chemically active. The chemical and physical properties of water are associated with the type of bonding involved in the water molecule. Chemical changes such as hydrolysis, or rusting of iron, involve the breaking of chemical bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Physical changes, such as evaporation in a boiler, the melting of ice, or the viscous resistance to flow in a pipe, involve breaking of the hydrogen bonds. (The hydrogen nucleus is so small that it can attract two negative atoms.) Thus water molecules not only combine with molecules of other compounds but even with one another; e.g., each molecule may be bounded to four other molecules. Water molecules cling to the ions of dissolved salt to form water-encumbered hydrated ions and they cling to one another to form entangling networks through which hydrated ions can be propelled only by tearing the networks apart. That is one reason why considerable energy still needs to be expended in our simplest procedures for purifying water. If water molecules did not have this habit of clinging so tenaciously to other molecules, and to one another, it would be easy to push salt ions past the water molecule and get a separation. But the water would not then dissolve salt, so the problem would not exist.' Water when heated evaporates very slowly, relative to other liquids having simple molecules. Vaporization involves the separation of molecules from the liquid, and this means overcoming the attraction between molecules which is due to the hydrogen bonding. The heat of vaporization for water is high; consequently, the boiling point of water is also high. Water boils at 100" C; hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at -60" C; oxygen (02) at -183" C; nitrogen (N2) at -196" C; and methane (CH4) at-161°C, even though the latter has about the same molecular weight as water. Because of these peculiar properties of water, it exists as a liquid on earth instead of a gas such as hydrogen sulfide or nitrogen and oxygen.

In October 1942, the War Production Board requested the Tennessee Valley Authority to undertake investigations to determine the feasibility of producing alumina suitable for reduction in aluminum cells, from clays and other domestic materials, by a lime-sintering, soda-ash leaching process. The work was undertaken by the chemical engineering staff of the Authority under the general direction of the War Metallurgy Committee of the National Academy of Sciences. The investigation included small-scale tests to determine the most suitable conditions for the process, and construction and operation of a pilot plant to obtain data for evaluation of the process and for design of a plant. The results of this investigation are described in the present paper. Sources of Alumina Alumina for the commercial production of aluminum is obtained from bauxite by the Bayer process. The tremendous demand for aluminum for wartime uses is causing rapid exhaustion of the high-grade bauxite deposits in the United States. On the other hand, there is an abundance of aluminous materials such as clay and lower grades of bauxite, which are not suitable for treatment by the Bayer process because of their high silica content. The Tennessee Valley Authority has conducted research and pilot-plant work for more than 5 years on methods for the production of alumina from clay and low-grade bauxite. Particular attention has been given to the high-grade white kaolin found in Carroll County, Tennessee. Exploratory drilling has demonstrated that at least 4 1/2 million tons of kaolin containing in excess of 34 per cent AlzOI is available in this area by strip-mining methods. It has been estimated that hundreds of millions of tons of clay of similar quality occur in the Tennessee Valley region. The Process The process is illustrated in the flowsheet (Fig. I), and consists essentially of the following steps: I. Heating a mixture of clay and limestone to form a sinter containing calcium aluminate and dicalcium silicate. z. Leaching this sinter with a dilute sodium carbonate solution, to form a sodium aluminate solution and a calcium carbonate, calcium silicate residue, which is discarded. 3. Treating the sodium aluminate solution with carbon dioxide to precipitate aluminum trihydrate and regenerate the sodium carbonate solution, which is recycled. 4. Heating the aluminum trihydrate to produce alumina. COAL blending, in the preparation of coal before coke making, is so commonly practiced as to be almost universal. But the reasons underlying this practice, the benefits resulting from it, and the materials used in blending vary widely. This paper will outline the various phases of the subject and present information which may be correlated with work that has been done elsewhere. It will deal entirely with work done on the high-volatile coking coals of the western part of the United States, special emphasis being given to the coals of Colorado and Utah. A surveyL of the 86 coke plants in active operation in the United States during 1949 indicates that only 9 plants, or 10.5 pct of the total, charged one single rank of coal into their ovens, while the remaining 89.5 pcl made use of blending in some form. This report indicated that of these total plants 5 used straight high-volatile coal, 4 used straight medium-volatile coal, 47 used blends of high and low-vola-tile coals, 25 used blends of high, medium, and low-volatile coals, 2 used blends of high and medium-volatile coals, 3 used blends of medium and low-volatile coals. The fact that certain plants operated on a single kind of coal should not be interpreted to mean that no blending was practiced there, for invariably such plants secure their coal from more than one source and in the interest of uniformity do blend the coals as received. The general term coal blending covers two fields, the first of which is the mechanical mixing of a number of coals to secure uniformity. Often it is found necessary to secure coal for coke production from a number of different mines; these coals, though of the same general type or rank, may differ in their chemical composition or in the physical qualities they impart to coke made from them. Again, it is not unusual to find that coal from different sections of the same mine may show variations in quality. Under such conditions it may be necessary, in the interest of a uniform final product, to introduce a system of blending bins, a bedding yard, or other mechanical methods of securing a uniform mixture. Unfortunately this form of blending has received very little attention up to the present time; it has not received the consideration its value merits. The second type of blending, while also for the purpose of coke improvement, deals more particularly with the use of a blending agent differing in character from the base coal: it is this form of blending that will be discussed here. To consider only the western coals, for blending may be found necessary for other reasons with other coals, blending has been practiced experimentally or commercially under the following conditions: 1—When a single coal or mixture of coals of the same rank does not produce a satisfactory coke. For example, a high-volatile coal when used alone is likely to contract when coked so that a comparatively weak coke is formed. Or, if of very low rank, the coal may be deficient in the necessary bitumens required for good coke production. 2—When a product of some special quality is required, for example, when a plant ordinarily producing blast furnace coke must operate at slow coking rate to produce a high-grade foundry coke. Under this condition the reduced daily production of all products which accompanies slow coking time may be undesirable, and the use of some blending agent to increase the size of coke made at faster coking rates may be necessary. 3—When greater yield of coke or its coproducts is needed. Depending upon economic values of the products it may be found desirable to increase the yield of one or the other. 4—When supply of a particular coal must be used, either to protect reserves of high quality coking coal or to utilize a surplus or inferior product not otherwise usable. The oxidation behaviors of simple and complex chloride systems of copper, iron, nickel, cobalt, and manganese in a stream of oxygen were investigated using a thermogravimetric analysis technique. Their reaction mechanisms are discussed from stoichiometry, thermodynamic feasibility, and X-ray diffraction analysis of reaction products. The results are used to determine an optimum operating temperature of the selective oxidation step in a chlorination process for producing nonferrous metal chlorides, elemental sulfur, and ferric oxide from copper-nickel sulfide flotation concentrates.

President H. M. Howe, Boston, Mass. (communication to the Secretary): Le Chatelier's pyrometer is certainly a most convenient and accurate instrument for the laboratory, and one that may be used under some conditions in the mill. I have used it for several years and with great satisfaction. Like Prof. Roberts-Austen and unlike Herr Blass, I have always found that its indications remain constant over long periods. Like Prof. Roberts-Austen, also, I find it possible, in a quiet place, to read with extreme accuracy ; and, by the use of a telescope, I can read temperatures to within a degree, for some delicate determinations which I have in hand. Variations in the temperature of the room affect the readings of the instrument far less than one would expect. When the current is cut off, the mirror does not always return exactly to the same place; in other words, the zero shifts appreciably, and must be determined often, indeed every few hours if accuracy be desired. In some cases I have had it determined within a very few minutes of every important reading. To this end a switch should he introduced, so that the circuit may be broken readily. With this arrangement we can determine accurately the position of the zero within a very few seconds of the time of taking any especially important reading. The chief causes of the variation of the zero which I have noticed are as follows: a. The suspension may not be tight enough, so that the momentum of the galvanometer frame as it swings makes its supporting wires slip in their bearings. b. Changes in the position of neighboring iron objects may deflect the mirror. c. Changes in the temperature of the room may, perhaps, change the torsion of the suspension wires, and so shift the mirror. d.
