In the study of reactions occurring in liquid iron, alone or in contact with a liquid oxide or slag phase, it has been found that the experimental data over a limited range of concentration can in some cases be represented satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression where (P) denotes the concentration of a product and (R) the concentration of a reactant in the reaction r1R1 + r2R2 + • • • D P lP1 + P 2P2 + • • • Some of the reactions for which it holds are listed in Table 1. For others, however, the simple equation apparently does not hold. This has been attributed to an improper method of expressing concentration (for instance, weight per cent instead of mol fraction); or it has been supposed that the solutions are not ideal in the sense that the activity of a component is not proportional to its true mol fraction. But it may be that the problem has been oversimplified by neglecting some molecular species actually present; that is, by considering only the ostensible simple components and thus leaving out of account possible compound formation. It is the purpose of the present paper to point out how, in a group of related cases, a reasonable consistent assumption relative to the presence of a compound makes it possible to express the experimental data satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression when this compound is taken into account, and to bring into harmony data referring to different reactions in liquid iron. There are several a priori reasons for believing that solutions in liquid iron should not deviate far from ideality, provided that the concentration of solute is not too great and is expressed in proper terms. The factors that commonly lead to nonideality in systems at ordinary temperature— as ionization or the occurrence of polar and nonpolar molecules—are presumably less effective in inetal and in slag systems at high temperature. MESSRS. BURT and Shockley and others have been for three years urging upon the Institute the matter of simplified spelling. The Institute endeavors to be progressive in the matter of spelling and. is in cooperation with the national body which has this in hand and which has its principal office in New York. Our spellings are changed as fast as-good usage will permit (so it seems to the Board of Directors) and the national body, which is the real representative of the simplified spelling interests, deems that the Institute is making real progress, although not quite as fast as extremists would wish. In January, 1919, Mr. Shockley sent out letter ballots which created a misconception in the minds of many members, who received the impression that the communications came from the Institute instead of from a small group of members. As a result of this propaganda 163 proposal-ballots were sent in to the Institute divided as follows: Yes ?114 No ?20 Negative letters ?9 Split ballots ?20 Total ?163 The total membership at this time was about 7200. The disgusted members would not vote.

THE Mabuki process, a Japanese hearth process for the treatment of matte, uses the same princi-ple as the Bessemer steel process. The only difference between the two is that in the Mabuki proc-ess a hearth furnace, not a converter, is used. To construct the hearth, an excavation, 6 ft. in each dimension, is made in the ground and a drainage channel is dug at the bottom. The principle that conventional schemes for taxing petroleum or mineral resources are "inefficient" is illustrated using simulation calculations tested against an "ideal" system. Inefficiency is defined as the relative success in maximizing expected government revenues from the resources. Most systems fail because: 1) they leave oil in limbo, i.e. unproduced because of excessive fiscal burden; or 2) they unnecessarily increase the variance in the explorationist'c, rate of return by undertaxing large fields and overtaxing smaller but infra-marginal fields. This increases his discount rate and reduces taxable surplus. An "ideal" tax system is specified which maximizes government revenues while minimizing risk to the operator. Two criteria are developed: 1) the tax falls to zero on fields which yield only the minimum necessary rate of return ("marginal" fields); and 2) the after-tax present value of all fields is the same for all fields above a threshhold size. In particular, marginal fields, while contrib- uting little to expected values, do contribute to reducing variance and hence risk praemia by distributing the exploration costs over a higher probability of successful outcomes.

Y.).-It may be n matter of some interest that sodium cyanide is now being made commercially by melting together in an electric furnace calcium cyanide with a common salt, which produces calcium chloride and sodium cyanide. It seems to me entirely possible that you have here about the same results that would be obtained by melting calcium chloride and ordinary cyanide together, only you obtain it a good deal cheaper. There is no doubt about that reaction once it is being carried on on a large industrial scale for the manufacture of cyanide for other uses. I think probably the same, thing takes place here, with the possible exception of lowering the melting point due to the presence of the calcium chloride.

A study was conducted to determine the influence of the surface on the yield point of fcc metals and high-purity iron. For the high-purity fcc metals, the yield Point produced by restraining a specimen may be eliminated by removing a sufficient amount of the layer. A yield point similar to that in fcc metals was found when iron specimens were pre-strained after a prior deformation. This yield point is not due to an aging effect but is associated with the surface layer. The yield points in age-hardenable aluminum alloy and those connected with "work softening" are not affected by a surface-removal treatment and are, therefore, caused by bulk-type dislocation reactions. The yield point which appears in previously strained fcc metals has been the subject of numerous studies. Several theories have been advanced to explain this "unloading-reloading" yield point. Cottrell and stokes,' from their study on the effect of temperature on plastic properties of high-purity aluminum, considered that it was the result of an avalanche "breakdown" of Lomer-Cottrell sessile dislocations. Haasen and Kelly2 extended this concept of dislocation-dislocation interaction to account for the yield point when unloading and reloading was carried out at the same temperature. On the other hand, strain aging was found to be responsible for the yield point in A1-Mg alloy by Westwood and Broom,3 and in aluminum alloys containing various amounts of alloying elements by Smallman, Williamson, and Ardley.4 In these cases, the yield point is considered to be associated with the locking of dislocations by impurity atoms. Birn-baum and filer5,6 and Takamura and muira7 reported that, when a high-purity copper specimen was prestrained, then held at a lower stress, and finally reloaded at the prestrain temperature, a larger yield point was observed. Such an increase was attributed to the locking of dislocations by point defects. In addition, Bolling8 suggested that both mechanisms, i.e., dislocation-dislocation interaction and strain aging, are responsible for the yield phenomenon, at least in a brass. Thus, there appears to be experimental evidence for both the strain aging and dislocation-dislocation interaction theories to explain the yield point in the fcc metals and alloys. In a previous article,9 one of the authors observed that, if sufficient amounts of metal were electrolti-cally removed after deformation of a high-purity aluminum single crystal, the yield point did not appear upon reloading. Continued pursuit in this area revealed that the effect of the surface on the yield-point phenomenon is not limited to one metal but affects a variety of metals of different lattice structures. Nor is the effect limited to the yield points produced by simple unloading-reloading at constant temperature; the surface exerts an important role on the yield point even when the temperature is changed at some stage during the test. It is the intent of the present article to give additional information regarding the effect of the surface on the yield-point phenomenon and to show the association between the yield point in both fcc and bcc metals and the existence of a heavy concentration of dislocation in the region near the surface of a deformed specimen.10 EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The single crystals used in this study had a nominal cross section of 0.125 by 0.125 in. and a 3-in. gage length and were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique. The initial purity for the metals was 99.997, 99.999, and 99.999 pct for aluminum, copper, and gold, respectively. Bar stock of these same materials was used in the preparation of the polycrystalline specimens of aluminum and copper. The iron specimens were machined from rods of "ferrovac", reported to have a purity of 99.98 pct. In addition, a precipitation-hardening aluminum alloy, containing 1.5 pct Cu, 2.5 pct Mg, and 5.5 pct Zn, was used. It was observed that chromized coatings on low carbon steel could be embrittled by cooling slowly through the 475°C range. A higher chromium coating was more susceptible to embrittlement than a lower chromium coating. Coating structure and composition could be correlated with the chromizing process and prior carbon content of the steel. IT was recently observed that during the fabrication of rectangular tubings made with chromized thin gage 1010 steel, a high percentage of these parts were fractured readily in a brittle manner under the light impact-forming load employed. Ensuing investigation indicated the cause for such brittle failures to be the so-called 475°C embrittlement of the chromized coatings. The experimental work and results are briefly reported. Rectangular tube sections of normalized AISI C1010 steel, which had a cross-section of 0.5x1.5 in. and a wall thickness of 0.030 in., were chromized to yield coatings having several ranges of thickness, varying from 0.0005 to 0.002 in. Essentially, the chromizing process is similar to that described by Samuel and Lockington,' which consists of heating the parts in a sealed container at about 955°C for 4 hr in intimate contact with a chromizing mixture* samples in a hydraulic press, and the other employed a simple beam bending test of the flat sides of the tubing walls. Neither, however, was able to differentiate the relative brittleness of samples known to include both the brittle and tough types, since the impact-brittle samples were found to deform readily in a manner similar to the tough ones. Both the tough and brittle samples were studied by reflection microscopy. Observation showed that the microstructures of the steel cores were similar in content and distribution of inclusions as well as in the ferritic grain size. Results of Filar micrometer measurements showed that coating thicknesses+ of the brittle samples averaged 0.0007 in., whereas those of the tough samples averaged 0.0016 in. The micrographs of Fig. 2 illustrate the structural differences between coatings of both types of samples. By dissolving the steel cores in nitric acid, coatings of both the brittle and tough samples were isolated. Simple bending tests showed that coatings of the brittle samples cracked readily at about 90" bend, whereas those of the tough samples could be bent nearly 180° without cracking. The basic density equation originally dericed ' to predict the increase in density of a compact of spherical particles with the progressive deformation at the points of contact has been further modified to include the yield strength of the material. This has been done by assuming that the contact areas grow to stable sizes under a fixed stress which is equal to three times the yield strength. The final equation has the form: where Do and D me the initial and final bulk densities of the compact, u is the applied pressure, and Y is the yield strength of the material. This equation was tested with the data obtained on spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The calculated yield strength t~alues for lead and sapphire are within the range of values reported in the literature. A few of the earliest hot pressing models proposed to explain the mechanism by Murray, Livey, and williams2 and then by McClelland3 are based on a plastic flow mechanism. However, more recent investigations suggest that the overall densification process is a combination of several mechanisms, such as particle rearrangement, fragmentation, plastic flow, and stress-enhanced diffusional creep. While fragmentation and particle rearrangement are considered to be responsible for the densification in the early stages,"475 it has been concluded that the final stages of hot pressing are controlled by stress-enhanced diffusional creep.516 The manner in which the densification takes place, i.e., by fragmentation, particle rearrangement, plastic flow, or stress-enhanced diffusional creep, would depend upon the type of material, the temperature, and the stress level used during the hot-pressing experiments. Metal compacts can be expected to have a much greater contribution from plastic flow than ceramic oxides. Also, plastic flow would be a significant contributing factor to densification at high temperatures and high stresses. Most of these works, directed towards elucidation of densification mechanism, have dealt with kinetics of the process. The results of most of the authors vary from one another and they have proposed either new empirical or semiempirical equations to fit their data. The densification rate was found to vary with the type of the powder, shape and size of the powder, initial packing density of the compact, and a few other factors such as rate of heating, pressure, and so forth. Beyond the initial stages, the densification process has been considered to be as time-dependent flow, controlled by a diffusional process, e.g., Nabarro-Herring creep. Palm our, Bradley, and johnson' have attempted to use modified creep rate equations to interpret the data of densification under hot-pressing conditions. Beyond the initial stages, however, the densification would be controlled by a process depending upon the temperature, pressure, and size of the powders. It is the authors' belief that such densification cannot be exclusively controlled by a single process and so attempts should be made to study some observable phenomenon like microstructure, yield strength, and so forth. The emphasis of this work has been toward studying the densification problem from a more fundamental point of view. Some of the principal variables, like initial packing density, mode of packing, and size of the powders, have been controlled to a great extent. The total strain produced on pressure application (instantaneous) in such a case can be considered to be due to plastic and elastic deformation. The elastic component of the strain can be determined by decreasing the load to the initial value. The strain remaining then can be correlated with the contact areas produced by deformation and the corresponding applied load. In a previous paper,' the possible deformation behavior of spheres in a compact has been theoretically analyzed and experimentally tested. The change in contact area radius a relative to the particle radius R was related to the bulk density and the bulk strain for simple and systematic modes of packing. Tt was found that a density equation relating the above parameters can be represented by: where D and Do are the bulk densities of the compact at any value of a/R and a/R = 0, respectively. This basic equation should hold for any material as it was derived from geometrical considerations alone. An attempt has been made in this work to include the yield strength in the above density equation, so that a knowledge of the properties of any material can be used in predicting the densification behavior during the hot-pressing process. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATTONS The deformation of two spheres in contact under a static load can be compared to the deformation occurring between a hard spherical indentor and the flat face of a softer metal. Tt has been shown theoretically by both ~encky~ and lshlinskyg and experimentally by ~abor" that, for a material incapable of appreciable work hardening, the mean pressure required to produce plastic yielding (for deformation occurring between flat face and a hemispherical indentor) is approximately equal to three times the elastic limit, Y, of the material (in tension or compression experiments). Tabor has further observed that the same relationship is valid in the case of work-hardening materials, if the elastic limit at the edge of the indenta-

This paper presents results of an experimental study dealing with the plastic stress-strain relations of aluminum alloy 14s-T6 subjected to combined biaxial tension and compression stresses. Plastic stress-strain relations for both constant and various types of variable stress ratios were determined and a comparison made with the simple flow theory of plasticity. THIS investigation was undertaken for two main purposes: 1—to obtain plastic stress-strain relations for Alcoa 14s-T6 when subjected to various combinations of biaxial stresses, and 2—to determine the validity of the flow theory in predicting plastic stress-strain relations for combined stresses. The biaxial stresses used were tension combined with compression. These stresses were produced by subjecting a thin-walled tube to axial tension and torsion. Various types of combined stress conditions were investigated. To provide control test data and information on the influence of biaxial stresses on the strength, the usual constant stress ratio type tests were made. These tests showed that the biaxial yield strength agrees approximately with the distortion energy theory. However, the Prager semi-empirical theory agrees best with the test results. For these constant stress ratio tests the plastic stress-strain relations were found to agree approximately with the flow theory. (For constant stress ratio the flow and deformation type theories are identical.) In view of the fact that the constant stress ratio tests cannot distinguish between the flow and deformation theories, a number of variable and special biaxial stress tests were made. These tests showed that the flow theory is inadequate, since large differences exist between the experimental and theoretical results. Special tests were also conducted to check the validity of the isotropic yielding assumption. This assumption is made in the linear-type flow theory. In these tests specimens were loaded in tension to predetermined values beyond the proportional limit stress. The tension load was removed from the specimen and the specimen was subsequently loaded in torsion to fracture. Other tests were applied with the order of torque and tension loading reversed. The nominal stress-strain curves for these two tests approximately coincide indicating that the assumption of isotropic yielding is valid. In addition, these tests verified the requirement by the slip theory of plasticity that prestraining below 140 pct of the proportioned limit stress in either torsion or tension did not influence the subsequent plastic stress-strain relations in tension or torsion. Another type of test was conducted to check the assumption that the axes of principal stress and strain coincide during plastic flow and variable stress conditions. These tests were conducted by applying combinations of axial tension, internal pressure, and torsional loads such that the axes of maximum principal stress could be rotated through 90" during the loading path. The results of those tests showed that the angle between the axes of principal stress and strain varied greatly and that the assumption of coincidence between axes of principal stress and strain is not valid. Introduction In various metal processes including forming of sheets, rolling of bars, and extrusion of rods, metals are subjected to stresses beyond the yield strength of the material. Often these stresses are not simple stresses acting in one direction, but are combined stresses acting in more than one direction. Structural and machine members are often subjected to combined stresses. To adequately determine the factors of safety for these members, it is necessary to know the plastic stress-strain relations of the material used for various combined stress conditions. Various theories have been proposed for predicting the plastic stress-strain relations for combined stress in terms of the simple tension plastic stress-strain relation for the material. To determine which theory might be adequate, test results must be obtained for various combined stress conditions, in order to compare the actual with the assumed theoretical behavior. Although there is considerable test data available for combined stress conditions in which the principal stress ratios are constant, relatively little test information is available for vari-

I. INTRODUCTION. SINCE the discovery of silver at Cobalt, Ontario, in 1903 more than 100,000,000 oz. of silver have been produced b: the mines in the Nipissing district, and there is reason to believe that at least as much more will be produced in the next five years. The estimated value of the aggregate output o ore to the end of 1910 is $48,327,280. The ore yielded 93,977,833, oz. of silver and was mined at a net profit of about $26,000,000. For 1910 the production was 30,558,825 oz. valued at $15,436,894, and yielding a profit of about $9,000',000 The details of the production of the Cobalt district for the years 1904 to 1909, inclusive, are given in Table I. Mineral aggregates are those natural and manufactured industrial mineral and rock materials that provide bulk and strength in port- land cement concrete, bituminous concrete mixes, and plaster or stucco surfaces. They may also provide special characteristics such as thermal and acoustical insulation, weight, surface textures, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. Most aggregates are relatively inexpensive materials, but despite their low unit value, the tonnages consumed each year in the United States and throughout the world make mineral aggregates by far the leading industrial mineral and rock materials both in terms of volume (tonnage) produced and value consumed. The major use of mineral aggregates is in concrete. The low cost, high bulk aggregates tend to keep concrete construction costs at levels competitive with other building materials. Other major uses of aggregates include highway and railroad base or ballast materials, graded fill, and various industrial uses such as metallurgical and chemical fluxes and raw materials-these latter uses are often considered nonaggregate uses of mineral aggre- gate materials. The value of mineral aggregate materials at the production plant varies from less than a dollar per ton to several dollars per ton for most crushed stone and sand and gravel, $2 to $15 per ton for slag and expanded clay or shale aggregate, to as much as $60 to $100 per ton for expanded perlite or vermicu- lite. The more specialized the use, the higher the price-although there are naturally some exceptions to this rule of thumb. The first four parts of "Construction Materials" deal with the utilization of four major mineral aggregate types: Crushed Stone, Light- weight Aggregates, Sand and Gravel, and Slag. While the focus will be on the use of these industrial minerals and rocks there will also be some coverage of sources, mining and production, especially in those cases where they are

For the past several years, USBM has conducted laboratory and continuous process development work on the weathered mica pegmatites ores of Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. The research has resulted in the development of two processes for flotation of mica: 1) an acid-cationic method for recovery of coarse mica and 2) an alkaline-anionic-cationic method for recovery of fine mica. The research indicated that the two processes may be effectively utilized separately or in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatite ores. This report summarizes the process development work, and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial-grade concentrates with a high recovery of the contained mica. Mica mining in the United States is confined largely to pegmatites and schists in a few well-defined areas. The largest region extends from central Virginia southward through western North and South Carolina, northern Georgia, and east-central Alabama.'" Whereas in western North Carolina, these pegmatite dikes are weathered to only a shallow depth, they are deeply weathered in the Carolina Piedmont and in Georgia and Alabama. Particularly in Georgia and Alabama, mica is found in the decomposed slates and schists adjacent to the pegmatites, and in deeply weathered granites. Most flake mica is obtained as the major marketable product by crushing and milling pegmatites4 To a lesser extent, mica is produced as a byproduct of feldspar" and spodumene. Past research by U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed two methods for mica flotation. One method utilizes acid-cationic flotation for recovery of mica.' This method requires thorough desliming of the ore with consequent fine mica losses. The other utilizes an alkaline-anionic-cationic process for recovering fine-size mica from pegmatite ores after desliming sufficiently to remove clay materials but not so drastically as to remove the fine mica.8-18 The latter process has also been successfully applied to a micaceous schist ore from California.' This report summarizes the results of these research studies. Both of the flotation processes developed by USBM have been adopted by the mica industry and are being commercially utilized separately and in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatite ores. A new method is described for the production of cold-bonded pellets using a hydraulic binder, such as portland cement. Large-scale pilot-plant tests have proved that self-fluxing pellets of high reducibility and good handling strength can be made by the method. Blast-furnace trials have shown that the pellets are an acceptable burden material, comparable with self-fluxing sinter or heat-hardened pellets. Economic factors of commercial-scale production are discussed. The Grangcold Pellet Process—for which patents have been applied or already granted in a number of coun-tries—uses a hydraulic adhesive such as portland cement, slag cements, pozzolanic cements, etc., for the production of cold-bonded pellets. The idea of using a hydraulic binder for the agglomeration of iron-ore fines is not new. Portland cement was proposed as an adhesive for cold-bonded iron-ore briquettes in patents granted more than 50 years ago.' In a report on the briquetting of iron-ore fines, published in Stahl und Eisen in 1959; it is stated that briquettes bonded with portland cement are used on a small scale at an ironwork in Germany. According to the report, the briquettes showed excellent strength in the blast furnace although their general use was made impossible because they required a long hardening time, during which they are sticky, soft, and difficult to store and handle. The Grangcold Pellet Process has overcome this particular disadvantage by mixing the balls with a suitable amount of the balling concentrate before storing them. The pellets are embedded in the concentrated during storing in such a way that they are isolated from each other and thus prevented from sticking together to form clusters. Thanks to the embedding concentrate, the pellets are subjected to a more or less uniform pressure from all sides which does not deform them. Thus, the mixture can be stored in a stockpile or in a bin until the pellets have hardened sufficiently. The concentrate is separated from the pellets by means of screening. The concentrate is returned to the balling operation and the pellets are either shipped to the blast furnace or stored for final hardening. The binder preferred for the Grangcold Pellett Process is portland-cement clinker, ground without the admixture of gypsum in order to avoid sulfur in the pellets as far as possible. Usually a 10% binder content is used. Two-thirds of the portland-cement clinker consist of lime and the rest is silica, alumina, and ferric oxide. Thus, self-fluxing or overbasic pellets are produced with this binder if the amount of silica in the concentrate used does not exceed 4%. The Grangcold Pellet Process was developed by the mineral Processing Laboratory of the Granges Co. Work started in 1963 with batch-scale tests. In 1966, a small pilot plant was put into operation in which 1800 tons of pellets were produced using 10% of rapid-hardening portland cement as a binder. Favorable results from a blast-furnace test with this batch led to the decision to erect a larger pilot plant which went into production in the summer of 1967. Since then, approximately 100,000 tons of cold-bonded pellets have been produced, mostly with 10% gypsum-free portland cement as a binder. Several full-scale blast-furnace trials have been performed with the pellets. The results of the trials indicate that the Grangcold pellets constitute a satisfactory blast-furnace feed. An industrial plant for the production of Grangcold pellets with a rated capacity of 1.5 million tpy is now under construction at the Granges Co.'s mine at Grangesberg. The plant will come into operation in the summer of 1970. Results from Laboratory Work Pellets made from iron-ore concentrate bonded with portland cement harden slowly and their handling is very critical until they have hardened enough to loose their stickiness. It is therefore especially important to study the progress of the hardening action and the factors influencing it. This is best achieved by investigating the relationship between the compressive strength of the cement-bonded pellets and the curing time under varied conditions. These prior studies are quite complete and cover virtually the entire field of oil production and recovery.' One of the most important measurements in production studies is that of the bottom-hole pressure at various rates of production.2 It is the purpose of this paper to outline the technique and economics of fluid-level measurements as applied to pumping wells and to review briefly other methods for obtaining bottom-hole data. The applications of bottom-hole pressure or fluid-level measurements are based on simple hydrodynamic principles. ON THE QUESTION of postwar controls there are today three schools of though ; some advocate state control of everything the socialists ; second are those who advocate the removal of all governmental control over industry - the freedom of enterprise ideal ; and third are those who advocate a middle course - sufficient control to stabilize economic and industrial life, and to prevent violent fluctuations such as we saw in the interwar years. I advocate this third course. I firmly believe un free enterprise, but not in freedom of enterprise, or laissez faire, and there is a great and significant difference between these two.

We have not yet begun. to realize the possibilities of automatic machinery, in part because we have not developed the designing brains, and in part because we have not sufficiently simplified industry to make possible the economical use of such machinery. The principle of the Jacquard loom, has scarcely been utilized except in weaving silk and in the player piano. It is the principle of bringing into action the various parts of a machine in accordance with a pattern traced on a steel card by perforations or as on the paper roll of a player piano. This principle gives us a control which can be applied to any kind of machine. It is a' great reserve principle for the future. But even now, with the machinery that we have at command, anyone can cut the number of employees in two, at the same time doubling his output, by installing semi-automatic or automatic machinery. And no one knows how far this process can go on. Cutting down the number of men is not just putting some poor fellows out of a job. It is increasing the number of good jobs by increasing the production per capita to a point where really satisfactory wages can be paid out of it, and this in turn- increases the amount of work required to be done and creates new jobs. Thus, cheapening in- creases the demand.
