There hare been made at one or two places in Ohio, during the last year or two, some irons of rather unusual phosphorus-percentages. The first of these which I had occasion to examine came from Moxahala Furnace, in Perry county. The furnace was built originally to smelt an ore found in large deposits near its furnace in the " black band" horizon. The deposit was easily exposed by simple stripping;" it was from six to eight feet thick, being a blne carbonate ore, very free from silica. This ore yielded, on analysis, from two to 3 per cent. of phosphorus, when carefully sampled. The furnace company had trusted entirely to old analyses made on "outcrop" ore, well weathered, and received all other results with indifference. The result of the first run of the furnace was an iron in large whitish-gray crystals, and so brittle that it could be pulverized in a mortar. This iron contained 4.90 per cent. phosphorus. A limited quantity only was made, which was gradually disposed of as a great ('softener" to foundries. The Moxahala Furnace was subsequently run on Lake Superior ore mainly. The second case of such iron occurred last summer at Mt. Vernon Furnace. A deposit of what was locally known as "Hallelujah" ore, was opened for the furnace. This ore was a blue carbonate, similar to the first-described. The iron made was pure tin-white in color, and showed large crystals without a trace of the grain of ordinary pig-iron. The sulphuretted ores of Carroll and Grayson Counties, Va., Ore Knob, Ashe County, N. C., and Ducktown, Tenn., in their general position, are in the prolongation of the same massive deposits. The existence of the extensive ore-bodies has been well-established, not only in a practical way, but by the careful research of a number of men of science, including Dr. T. S. Hunt, Professor Kerr, Dr. Genth, Rogers, Safford, Professor Egleston, Dr. H. E. Colton, the writer, and others, and described in one or more of the volumes of our Transactions, as well as in other publications. The greater quantity of' these ores being pyrrhotite, although much of them carry nonmagnetic disulphide, their reduction on the gronnd will probably lead to better results than an attempt to mine and ship them to distant places; and their use as sulphuric acid producers, to be employed in the cheap manufacture of valuable fertilizers, will be chiefly the subject of this paper. The great deposits of Carroll County, Va., are now nearer to railway transportation than any of the others, being six to eight miles from the Cripple Creek extension of the Norfolk and Western Railway, now being constructed, the grading of which is in an advanced state of completion. I am not able to state what are the present prospects of an early completion of the contemplated line of railway to Ducktown. For a long while, during the time those deposits were mined and reduced for their copper, the works were forty miles from any railway ; and the same may be said of Ore Knob, N. C. The deposits in Carroll and Grayson Counties, Va., being now the most accessible to cheap transportation, will naturally claim the greater part of our attention ; though it may be pertinent to remark, just here, that the ores of Ducktown, like those of Carroll and Grayson, Va., exist in the undecomposed levels as iron and copper sulphurets, much of which is a non-magnetic disulphide, as stated, with occasional exhibits of sulphides, such as covellite, erubescite, etc. There are, now and then, small quantities of silver, lead, and zinc,

I. L. Dillamore (University of Birmingham)—The different textures developed in various fcc metals have long awaited satisfactory explanation and it has now become clear that these differences are related to parallel differences in the deformation characteristics of the metals. Liu is correct, therefore, in seeking to account for the observed textures in terms of the flow mechanisms but I believe, for the reasons outlined below, that the particular interpretation of flow mechanisms proposed by Liu is open to substantial objections. By considering the forty-eight possible designations of the twelve octahedral slip systems found in fcc metals as distinct and separate deformation modes, Liu has fallen into the error of assuming that only positive glide dislocations associated with each system are present. In fact both positive and negative dislocations will be present and the only difference between for instance the systems B4 and B4' (in Liu's notation) is that under a stress of given sign the direction of motion of a dislocation is reversed on changing from B4 to B4'. For both orientations positive and negative dislocations will be present. In considering possible dislocation interactions it is, therefore, inadmissible to differentiate between R4 and R4' as Liu does. Liu considers those dislocation interactions which give the biggest reduction in energy to be the most favorable and neglects, on the grounds that they will form strong barriers to slip, interactions between dislocations with perpendicular Burgers vectors. Setting aside interactions between positive and negative dislocations of the same slip system, which must occur regardless of the combination of slip systems chosen, the biggest reduction in energy occurs for the Lomer-Cottrell interaction and it is Lomer-Cottrell barriers which are thought to provide the stronger dislocation obstacles. On the other hand the intersection of dislocations with perpendicular Burgers vectors is thought to be a low-energy process which contributes only a fairly small temperature-dependent part of the total work hardening. On this basis it seems doubtful whether the reduction in energy through possible dislocation interactions provides a reasonable criterion for choosing the operative slip systems. From the point of view of texture development it is unsatisfactory to ignore the slip rotations leading to an end position and to neglect to consider the stability of the chosen end point. It is also unsatisfactory to treat the two stress axes as interchangeable since, if the stress system is idealized as biaxial, one stress is compressive and the other is tensile. For the same reason the rotations of the two stress axes are not made compatible simply by assuming that the same slip directions are responsible for the rotations of the two stress axes. It is, in short, essential to treat the two stress axes as acting together on the same slip systems. Turning to the question of the difference between the copper-type and the brass-type texture, there now remains little doubt that the difference is attributable to differences in stacking-fault energy (y), as noted by Liu, but it is doubtful whether the temperature dependence of the texture in copper and in silver is due to increasing stacking-fault energy with increasing temperature. The results of Swann and Nutting42 cited by Liu were obtained in Cu-A1 alloys and the apparent increase in stacking-fault energy on raising the temperature may be influenced by short-range ordering. In pure metals such effects are absent and the only data available on the variation of y with temperature are those of Buhler et a1.43 for silver. They report a minimum at 200°C which does not fit the hypothesis put forward by Liu. It is much more likely that thermal activation of cross slip is important in determining which texture develops, as proposed by Dillamore and tors. These workers have proposed an explanation for the differences in observed texture among the fcc metals and the pole figures predicted consist of an orientation spread which is in better agreement with observation than the limited number of discrete orientations suggested by Liu. The theory of Dillamore and Roberts is also able to account for the differences between aluminum and copper which Liu still leaves unexplained. Y. C. A SPRING meeting is to be held at Cleveland this month under the joint auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee and the Ohio Section with the cooperation of the neighboring sections in Pennsyl-vania, Illinois, and the other States of the Great Lakes region. The discussions will be focused on just one subject, that of manganese, but will cover that thor- oughly as is indicated by the following list of papers. Nearly 14 pounds of manganese is needed for every ton of steel made. Estimates indicate that the total reserves of ore in this country suitable for making ferro would hardly supply domestic requirements for ten years, even if it could all be mined in that time. The grade of ore called for by present practice must come from abroad. The present tariff policy of this country is stated to cost industry $8,000,000 in order to force production of manganese ore to the extent of $600,000. What is the wise thing to do? Should a stock be accumulated? If so, how? Is it feasible to change practice and use low-grade ore or to beneficiate the ores of this grade and meet our requirements? What progress is being made in this direction? ,These and similar questions are raised in the various papers that have been submitted and will be open for dis-cussion.

Open pit mining, always a demanding task, faces two relatively new problems today: (1) availability of equipment and (2) environmental restrictions. The modern dredge offers relief in both problem areas. Delivery on a major dredge might run 18 to 24 months rather than 60 months; and lowering of the water table is precluded, thus minimizing environmental objections. In addition, a lower first cost and potentially increased efficiency may offer real advantages to the miner who is forced away from his traditional mining methods. What are the objections to the use of a dredge in open pit mining? Perhaps first and foremost is the natural reluctance to change from a successful operation. Who can blame the miner who has developed expertise in the use of the dragline if he is reluctant to change to a new mining technique that requires new and different skills? A part of the same problem is the miners' desire to control the excavation visually in order to delineate sharply between overburden and matrix. This problem can be alleviated significantly by utilizing good boring data and a positive acquisition cutter. In the final analysis, however, if the miner is prohibited from dewatering the area, either he mines the deposit by dredge or not at all. There is little doubt that when the decision is made to remove overburden and/or matrix by dredge, the problems of delineating between overburden and matrix, creation of slimes, and development of mining plans to minimize double handling etc., will be addressed and solved. There are two broad categories of dredges: mechanical and hydraulic.

The recent emphasis placed upon the use of molybdenum as a geochemical indicator has stimulated considerable inquiry into the behavior of molybdenum in the zone of oxidation. This paper represents a summary of recent and continuing experimental work and calculations in an investigation of a portion of the system Mo-Fe-S-H20 and treats the stability of various iron and molybdenum compounds with respect to oxidation potential and pH. Using experimentally determined free energy values for ferrimolybdite, diagrams of the stability fields of this mineral have been calculated with respect to ilsemannite (?), molybdenite, pyrite and limonite. This theoretical approach is the one utilized by Garrels3'4 in studies of the relationships of various minerals in the zone of oxidation. Use of this approach is particularly suited to the study of geochemistry in the zone of supergene processes because of the low temperatures, low pressures and other relatively easily determined and duplicated factors that exist in the near surface environment. Such a study of molybdenum, however, is complicated by several factors. One of these is the fact that the strong amphoteric behavior of molybdenum makes possible a wide variety of substances and complexes whose exact chemical natures are unknown. The second factor is the dearth of thermodynamic data for many of the simplest of the possible compounds and ions important to the study. For the purpose of this study, the problem of complexes has been approached through considering only the simpler possibilities realizing that the complexes and systems so treated may be gross oversimplifications. All the complexes considered, however, have been suggested in the chemical 2,7,9,12 or geologi-cal literature. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Studies of the behavior of molybdenum ions and ferrimolybdite have been carried out in aqueous sys- tems, and reactions have been followed by simultaneous measurement and recording of pH and oxidation potential. A major problem involved in this study was the long periods of time necessary for equilibrium to be established in some of the systems considered; in a few instances, these periods exceeded four weeks, that is, four weeks during which measured conditions changed continuously. Another problem, in some instances, was the indeterminate nature of the reactions that have taken place. Because of the tendency of molybdenum to complex, reactions which take place under some of the more extreme imposed conditions of oxidation and acidity or alkalinity are unknown. However, useful data for the present work were obtained from studies of the molybdate ion and ferrimolybdite between pH 2 and 8 and under only moderately oxidizing to nonoxidizing conditions. Instruments used in the experiments were a Hewlitt-Packard Model 412A VTVM, a modified Beckman Zeromatic pH Meter and two Varian model 11 recorders. pH was measured between glass and calomel electrodes and Eh was measured between calomel and platinum electrodes. Conditions of pH were varied with 1N H2SO4 and 1N NH4OH and 1N NaOH. Eh was varied with gaseous nitrogen, oxygen or aqueous H202. Ambient temperature was essentially uniform at 24ºC and was increased in the reaction vessel by the positioning of a magnetic stirrer whose temperature was sufficient to bring the temperature to 2S°C in the reaction. The temperatures of reaction did not vary more than 1/2ºfrom 25°C. Two reactions were investigated, the ferrimolybdite-limonite-water reaction and the reduction of molybdate ion. Studies of both reactions yielded useful data that were used in preparation of the Eh-pH diagrams. The traces of the reactions are shown on Fig. 1. Ferrimolybdite-Limonite- Water: Studies of this reaction involved analysis of the solution of ferrimolybdite and simultaneous formation of ferric hydroxide. The data are summarized on Fig. 1. In this reaction, equilibrium was attained at various pH's when coexistence of the two solid phases (ferrimolybdite and ferric hydroxide) was attained. At the proper pH, controlled by the amount of ferrimolybdite and thus the dissolved content of molybdate species, both phases were observed and reaction times to complete the transition were on the order of weeks. For many years hydrocyclones, commonly referred to as cyclones, have been extensively utilized in the classification of particles in comminution circuits. The practical range of classification for cyclones is 40 microns to 400 microns, with some remote applications as fine as 5 microns or as coarse as 1000 microns. Cyclones are used in both primary and secondary grinding circuits as well as regrind circuits. The information given in this chapter is intended to provide a method, at least for estimating purposes, of selecting the proper number and size of cyclones and to determine the proper level of operating variables. Generally, it is recommended that cyclone suppliers be consulted for sizing confirmation. Sow cyclone suppliers employ digital computers to aid in the sizing and selection of cyclones. CYCLONE DESCRIPTION AND BASIC OPERATION Figure 1 shows a cutaway view of a typical cyclone. During operation, the feed slurry enters the cyclone under pressure through the feed pipe into the top of the cylindrical feed chamber. This tangential entrance is accomplished by two types of design, as shown in Figure 2. Since the majority of research has been done with the involuted type, the graphs and relationships shown may not be strictly applicable to other designs. As the feed enters the chamber, a rotation of the slurry inside of the cyclone begins, causing centrifugal forces to accelerate the movement of the particles towards the outer wall. The particles migrate downward in a spiral pattern through the cylindrical section and into the conical section. At this point the smaller mass particles migrate toward the center and spiral upward and out through the vortex finder, discharging through the overflow pipe. This product, which contains the finer particles and the majority of the water, is termed the overflow and should be discharged at or near atmospheric pressure. The higher mss particles remain in a downward spiral path along the walls of the conical section and gradually exit through the apex orifice. This product is termed the underflow and also should be discharged at or near atmospheric pressure.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory research to determine the applicability of heavy liquid separation to the evaluation of certain mica ores and plant products. After careful standardization of the particular mica ores and associated gangue, accurate analysis of muscovite content could be obtained from results of heavy liquid separation. Where applicable, the method should be particularly suited to the analysis of ores and control of plant operations wherein savings in time would be of considerable advantage. Specifically, there are many instances where a quick plant control method should enable the production of a more uniform grade of mica concentrate. The laboratory use of various heavy liquids for separating minerals of different specific gravities has been recognized for many years.1-8 Sink-float procedures have proven their utility as a rapid and moderately accurate means for determining the mineral content of ores, test products, and plant products in certain nonmetallic concentrating operations. A standard method of analysis for mica in ore samples has not been published or generally accepted by the mica industry. Recently, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated methods for analyzing mica by heavy liquid separation. This report has been prepared to make the methods available to others who may need simple, relatively rapid methods of determining the mica content of ores and plant products. The heavy liquid method of mica determination has recently been adopted by one of the major mica producers for evaluating exploration and mill control samples. DESCRIPTION OF THE ORES AND HEAVY LlQLllD The weathered mica pegmatite ores used in the investigation were obtained from commercial mica op erations in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. The major mineral constituents of the ores were muscovite, quartz, kaolin, and minerals of the feldspar group. The ores also contained minor quantities of biotite, limonite, and tourmaline. A comparison of the specific gravities of the major constituents of the ores (muscovite 2.76 +, quartz 2.65, kaolin 2.61, and feldspar 2.57), indicates that an effective separation of muscovite from the other minerals can be made in heavy liquids at a specific

THE law of supply and demand is, in general terms, that law which governs the price of any commodity in an unrestricted competitive market. There are several variables which, for the purpose of this discussion, will be defined only as they apply to the petroleum industry: Production: The volume of petroleum that is moved from leases. Stocks: The volume of petroleum that is in the hands of the tank farm and pipeline companies. Inventory: The value of the stocks at the market. Consumption: The indicated delivery of oil to others than those who hold stocks. Demand: The potential absorbing power of the consuming market. Demand is the expression of the needs of the consumer and may depend on the economic value of the oil to the consumer. In times of low prices, the demand is the same as the consumption but during periods of high, prices or deficiency in supply, the demand may be greater than consumption. Martensitic transformations were observed by optical metallography and electrical-resistivity measurements during cooling at cryogenic temperatures of the bcc pr-phase Au-Zn alloys. The com-position dependence of the MS, MF, AS , and AF temperatures have been determined. It is concluded that the martensitic platelets which grow mainly in the lengthwise direction and which are associated with a very small temperature hysteresis are "thermoelastic" martensite. In some cases the observed structure seems to have no definite crys-tallographic habit or consists of a mixture of- plates and broad transformed areas. THE majority of the bcc /3-phase alloys in systems of copper, silver, and gold with zinc and cadmium are unstable at low temperatures and undergo a transformation upon further cooling into another structure. A large number of such transformations are martensitic. The composition dependence of the Ms temperatures has been determined and reported for CU-~n,' Ag-Cd,' and AU-C~~ alloys. The 50 at. pct ordered Au-Zn p' alloy has been reported by Jan and pearson4 to transform martensitically at 58°K in connection with their study of the de Haas-van Alphen effect The p' phase in the Au-Zn system has the ordered CsC1-type structure. The phase field is shown in Fig. 1: it has the typical V shape which is characteristic of all copper-, silver-, and gold-based binary /3-phase alloys. There appears to be no a priori reason why the transformation should be limited to the equiatomic composition and the availability of a cryogenic stage for optical metallography5 has permitted studies down to the liquid-helium temperature of a series of alloys in this system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Predetermined weights of 99.999 pct pure gold and zinc were melted and cast under a partial atmosphere of helium in sealed quartz capsules. Thorough mixing of the molten metals was achieved by vigorous shaking, followed by a rapid quench into a brine solution. All ingots were homogenized at 640°C for 4 days. WHEN Georgius Agricola, in 155o, dedicated his now famous De re Metallica to the rulers of Saxony, Thuringia, Meissen, and other, smaller principalities, he included in his review of previous works on similar subjects reference to two books written in German: one, an "anonymous, rather disorganized account of assaying for metallic content and of metals," which must be the Probierbüchlein, the other, "dealing - with veins, written by Calbus of Freiberg, a well-known physician."* Calbus is mentioned a second time-and cited-at the end of the Third Book of De re Metallica. Comparison of the citation with the Bergbüchlein leaves no doubt that Agricola considered Calbus of Freiberg the author of the latter work, although all the editions of the Bergbüchlein known now were published anonymously. It is generally accepted by those who have dealt with the bibliography of the Bergbüchleint that Calbus was Ulrich Rülein von Kalbe, who served the City of Freiberg, in Meissen, as health officer in 1497, as member of the City Council in 1509, and as mayor in 1514 and 1519. He died at Leipzig in 1523. In connection with the very garbled description of the mining compass toward the end of Chapter 3 of the Bergbüchlein it is of interest that von Kalbe is supposed to have been not only a physician of repute but a mathematician, astronomer, mine sur-

According to Tammann,' the explanation of the effect of mechanical deformation in producing changes in the properties of metals is one of the most important problems of physical metallurgy, taking rank with the study of the constitution of alloy systems; and this problem has long attracted the attention of practitioner and scientist alike. Its solution was not advanced materially until Tammann2 set up his translation hypothesis with its crystallographic basis, while other hypotheses, such as the amorphous metal hypothesis of Beilby3 and Rosenhain,4 have been shown by more intensive studies to be less and less satisfactory. The principles of the Tammann translation hypothesis have proved to be useful even up to today and in spite of all of the recent accumulation of experimental data, while the differences of opinion which have arisen relate to the extent to which the hypothesis accounts for the observed changes Ïn properties and to what extent further assumptions are necessary. Stimulated by the proposals of Tammann, there soon developed a lively experimental activity which aimed at the elucidation of the structural or crystallographic changes produced by the mechanical deformation of metals. Parallel movements of crystal "blocks" along definite crystal slip planes had already been observed by Ewing and Rosenhain5 in 1900, in metals which had been moderately deformed but without shedding light on the crystallographic nature of the processes accompanying more severe deformation. The solution of this important problem was not advanced until a much later date, or until the methods of X-ray crystal analysis had become available. The town of Goldfield, Nevada, with the exception of six stone buildings, was burned to the ground to-day. One man is dead from causes attributed to the fire. A woman is missing and is believed to have perished and several persons were treated for burns as the result of the conflagration believed to have been of incendiary origin which started in the old Tenderloin District. The water supply was not sufficient and dynamite only scattered the frame structures and added kindling to the flames which were fanned by a forty-mile wind. Newspaper Dispatch, July 6. No former Goldfield resident could read that dispatch with unmixed feelings. About two o'clock one morning the crowded train from San Francisco landed me in Goldfield no more hours late than it habitually was. The desert air was clear and crisp and bracing but the pandemonium of cab and bus drivers did not drown out the sounds of music and merriment which floated from the blaze of light which was Goldfield about three-quarters of a mile from the station. As I stood in the ferry house, at the foot of Market Street, awaiting the Oakland Ferry, an old friend of mine, down to see who was departing for the greatest boom town of this generation, informed me that if I had made no reservation for quarters in Goldfield, I would be unable to obtain any, even chairs in the hotel lobbies were renting for $4 per night, and volun-teered the use of his room there for my convenience until his return. He described the house and location, which I identified without difficulty, but found no one to direct me to the room. I peered through a glass door into a room which seemed to be unoccupied and timorously entered and turned on the electric light., I found mail on the dresser addressed to my friend,

It was obviously not written by an assayer who wished to give a coherent description of his craft for the instruction of others; this was left for Biringuccio first to do. It is easy to believe that originally the Probierbücblein was a random collection from various sources of information useful to an assayer, probably gathered by one of the profession for his own use. It must remain a matter of speculation whether this was shown to a printer, who recognized the opportunity to turn an honest penny and made an inept attempt to give the manuscript the appearance of a coherent account by writing a preface and arranging the various items in somewhat logical sequence, or whether the assayer him- self started this job and was prevented from finishing it. That some sections of the book, especially near the be ginning, present an almost continuous story, while others are chaotic in their arrangement; that several paragraphs are printed more than once in different places; that there are paragraph headings, for which the text was never written, or lost, followed by irrelevant information-all this seems evidence of a job unfinished and points to a publisher's offering for the public's quick money. The demand must have been brisk, for metal working was a profitable profession, and the jeweler who was working with metals but did not care to become completely trained in assay methods would jump at the chance of acquiring easy knowledge. Even the great Agricola has whole sections obviously plagiarized from the Probierbücblein. Neither Biringuccio nor Ercker shows any direct influence, though they and all subsequent metallurgists will in some degree be affected by

Evaluation of Ellenburger reservoirs in West Texas has been an uncertain matker at best because of the lack of cores and suitable core-analysis method. Large amounts of oil arc produced from sections from which sample cuttings are obtained that contain litile porosity and no oil saturation. It has long been realized that the formation in some areas contained numerous fractures and solulion cavities that probably contained the major part of the oil present but the magnitude of the porous system conltaining oil has been unknown. Diamond coring cquipmene, used in the mining industry lor many years, has been developed for oil-field use to obtain high core recovery in fractured dolomite that is not possible with conventional coring equipment. A 36ft section of the core recovered from a fractured Ellenburger reseivoir waS analyzed by a unique but simple method to obtain the first defmite evaluation of one section of the producing formation. The cores and the method of analysis used are described and the results arc discussed in some detail. Discussion The first successful known analyses of cores recovered from the Ellenburger formation in the Permian Basin area were made on cores recovered with the use of diamond core heads. Conventionul coring methods previously used have had lour core recovery and standard methods of analysis have proved to be inadequate for evaluation of those cores that were recovered. Core Descriplion The Ellenburger formation to be dis cussed was cored using diamond core heads and oil-base drilling fluid. Of the total 103 ft cored to a depth of 8893 ft in the Ellenburger, 99 ft or 96 pct was recovered. The dolomite cores were described as gray to white, crystalline to coarscIy crystalline, with chert and calcite inclusions. Occasional shale partings ? to ¼ in. in width were noted. A small amount of green clay was found in some of the coarsely crystalline material. So intergranular porosity was found by inspection in any of the cores. The core urns highly fractured over most of its length with not more than two continuous feet that failed to contain fractures. The fractures Were nearly vertical and varied in width from those harely visible to as much as one millimeter. IN my original paper, Piping and Segregation in Steel Ingots, I pointed out1 among other things that, in view of the slighter stretching (virtual expansion) of the crust, and greater opportunity for sagging, there should be less piping in broad than in narrow ingots, and less in slowly-cooled ingots, e.g., those cast in pre-heated sand molds, than in those which cool quickly, e.g., those cast in iron molds. A. A. Stevenson2 said that neither of these predictions agreed with his own experience. In particular, in a picture which he showed of a wide and of a narrow ingot cast from the same ladleful of steel,, the wide ingot had certainly piped much more deeply than the narrow one. At the time I did not see the explanation of these discrepancies, but further reflection makes it evident. One of the most important elements in determining the depth of the pipe is the degree of " top-lag," that is, the degree to which the solidification of the top of the ingot lags behind that of the bottom. 'Through this lagging the steel of the upper part of the ingot is able to run down and fill the pipe below as fast as it forms. To the importance of this lagging I called attention in my original paper.' Sand vs. Iron Molds.-If we compare two like ingots, one cast in an iron and the other in a sand mold, we see that the top-lag' is much greater in the former than in the latter, be¬cause in the former the lower part of the ingot is cooling off fast while the metal is running into the upper part. After 30 rears of development and after an output of $350,000,000 in value of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper, there has not been published a satisfactory explanation of the origin of the immense deposits of the Leadville district. The original examination and survey of Leadville by members of the U. S. Geological Survey was a 'most magnificent piece of work, but their attempt to explain the origin of the ores was based upon the then-accepted theory of lateral secretion, originated by Sandberger, which theory was afterwards disproved in many cases by further development in numerous districts. This theory contended that the ore in the veins had been leached by surface-waters from the eruptive rocks in the immediate vicinity, and it had its origin in the fact that the neighboring eruptive rocks all contained, to an appreciable degree, the several metals found in the ore-deposits. But the practical miner, reasoning in a simple manner from the condition of things as he found them underground, soon discovered the fallacy of this proposition. He reasoned that, in the case of the Leadville deposits, this theory could not be true, because, if the ores were leached from the overlying eruptive rocks by surface-waters, they would as a matter of necessity be controlled by the action of gravity, and the main bodies

IT is indeed an honor to have been asked to participate in the program which celebrates the seventy-fifth birthday of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. This great organization has occupied an important place in the professional and industrial life of this country-of the world. Its members have explored the far reaches of our globe and have played a great part in the discovery, extraction and utilization of the mineral resources upon which our civilization so largely depends. These engineers, together with the restless prospectors, on the one hand, and the scientists, on the other, have literally been the advance scouts of our modern way of life. As such, we owe them a deep and lasting debt of gratitude. May I, therefore, wish many happy returns to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and express the hope that it may long continue to be of great service, as it has been in the past. The subject assigned to me-Iron Ore and the Steel Industry-is, indeed, important, as one considers the future of our world. I shall give as few figures as possible. Pertinent statistical data are included in the tables in this chapter, which, I think, will prove interesting. Many studies of iron-ore reserves have been -published and are available; hence I shall limit myself mainly to an interpretation of these figures.
