ALTHOUGH most persons will agree that an individual or a nation can profit from the experience of other individuals or nations, there is always room for debate over the degree of similarity of their past and present conditions and of their future problems. Noting the increasing interest that Americans are showing in our mineral problems, I have felt that we could profit from reviews of the experiences in mineral exploitation acquired by the industrial nations of Europe. Whether we can learn much from Europe's experience in exploiting such minerals as petroleum may be debatable, but certainly, with a record of metal production extending back nearly 3000 years, Europe should hold much of value for America. A trip to Europe in 1926 permitted me to visit 28 mining districts, of which about half are now or have been in times past outstanding sources of several metals. The districts range from England to Greece and from Spain to Poland. To summarize briefly my impressions of these mining districts, as well as such reactions to the thought and life of Europe as so short a visit permits, I shall only venture the opinion that Americans can review with great profit the ideas and actions of Europeans, with regard not only to the production of metals but to many expressions of life. I believe that America has made and is making new contributions to the art of living, as well as to the arts of mining and metallurgy, but in so far as Europe is and has been a laboratory of economic, social and political experiments, the results she has attained deserve the thoughtful attention of America. I have come to believe that many of the problems that harass Europe lie in our path not far ahead. I have therefore hoped that a review of metal production in Europe in the light of its geologic, economic and political background may -serve to clear our vision with regard to our own metal production.

The motivation for the art of dredging for placer mining can be compared in a slight degree to the spread of civilization which started in the Near East and spread both east and west. Dredging started with the "bag and spoon" dredge in the lowlands of Europe reportedly about 1565, went southeast to New Zealand where designs were developed for a bucket-line mining dredge known as the New Zealand type, and westward to the eastern United States where a dredge was developed and used exclusively for excavating. Then it moved to Montana, where it was first used for mining in 1895. The New Zealand-type dredge was imported into California in 1898 (Fig. 1) and was followed shortly by the Montana design. As today, these early dredges were equipped with continuous bucket- line chains, a treatment plant, and a means of waste disposal mounted on a wooden hull. Both types of dredges are complete mining units: they dig the formation, transport the dug materials, and concentrate the valuable ore. After sizing, the fines containing the ore are passed by gravity to the treatment unit, while the barren materials are discharged overboard. By digging the materials to be treated at the bow and depositing all the waste, at the stern, the dredges automatically advance to new reserves without presenting any transportation problems. The main differences between the two types are in the method of holding the dredge in the digging position and in the disposal of the tailings to the rear. The New Zealand type (Fig. 2) uses the headline system with a bow anchor for holding the dredge in the digging position and long tailing flumes or short stackers off the stern for disposal of the barren materials. The California type (Fig. 3) uses box girder spuds projecting into the ground in a vertical position at the stern of the

In making gold alloys possessing certain physical properties, such i~nportant factors as corrosion resistance, color, hardness and melting points must be considered. All of these requirements depend directly upon the composition. It is possible to obtain the same colored gold alloy by using different compositions, but in doing so one may bring in some undesirable property. Other investigations have been carried on in this field by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise12 and L. Sterner-Rainer2 To make a complete study of the effect of composition upon these properties, a systematic investigation was carried on involving a range of copper content from 85 to 65 per cent. Elements such as zinc, silver and nickel were used to replace in part the copper content. The gold content in all the alloys remained constant. Only 10-karat gold alloys of those containing 41.6 per cent gold will be considered. All of the alloys were made in an induction furnace. Each alloy was cast in a 3 by 1/4 by 3/4-in. ingot. The method of obtaining the melting points and making color determinations was described in a previots paper.4 The Rockwell B scale with the 1/16-in. ball and 100-kg. weight was used for all hardness determinations. The submersion of test pieces in concentrated nitric acid is one of the standard corrosion tests used in the optical trade. A test piece in the 50 per cent cold-worked condition, % by 2 by 0.045 in., is blanked from a skip using a die, and the weight loss per square inch of surface is taken as a means of comparison. The time for this test is 2 1/2 hr. of actual submersion of the test picce in the acid. This standard test was applied to all of the 10-karat gold alloys discussed in this paper. The tensile tests were made upon strips of the dimensions shown in Fig. 1. The test pieces after blanking were annealed at 1300" F. for 20 min. and cooled in air. Thc "drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point, as there was a very marked "drop" when the yield point was reached.

F many years it has been suspected that a correlation existed between pits produced by etching and the density of dislocations in crystals. In 1953, the interest in this correlation was greatly stimulated when Vogel et al' demonstrated a 1:l correlation between etch pits and dislocations in low angle grain boundaries of germanium. About two years ago, the author began attempts to produce etch pits at dislocation sites in zinc mono-crystals. These attempts met with success a year or so ago,' and since that time a survey has been made of the etch pit patterns that are associated with various modes of deformation in zinc monocrystals. Unfortunately, the etching technique that will be described is too delicate for use as an accurate quantitative tool. Nevertheless, it has been of considerable assistance in clarifying the structure of plastically deformed crystals. Technique Many attempts were made to produce etch pits in high purity zinc crystals. It was found that several techniques would produce surface grooves at grain boundaries that had misorientation angles greater than about l°, but no technique was successful for boundaries with smaller angles. Among the things that were tried were: electrolytic CrO, (both etching and polishing concentrations), HNO, in various water and alcohol solutions, dilute HC1, many 0-0,-Na,SO, solutions, Cr0,-HC1 solutions, picral, electrolytic Na,S,O,, and electrolytic NaOH and KOH. A few attempts to use cathodic sputtering and thermal etching were also made.

Bond type simulated closed-circuit grindability tests and batch grindability tests were run on six pure minerals plus a limestone and a taconite ore. The simulated closed-circuit tests were made at five different meshes of grind. The minerals tested varied widely in hardness and breakage pattern. For all simulated closed-circuit tests both Bond and Holmes work indices were calculated and compared. The Bond grindability testlm6 has been widely and quite successfully used for predictions of such items as ball mill power requirements and as an aid in plant comminution equipment selection. The test is interesting in that although run as a series of batch tests it is over-all a simulated closed-circuit test with a circulating load of 250%. The simulated closed-circuit feature is probably the primary reason for the notable success of the test. Perhaps the major criticism that can be brought against the test is that it is time consuming, since it normally takes a trained technician about an eight-hour shift to perform it.4 For many purposes this is an acceptable time requirement. However, if a grindability test is to be used for mill control purposes it should be performed in as short a time interval as possible, preferably under an hour. Sometimes in industry strictly batch tumbling mill tests are run and an attempt is made to correlate such batch tests with plant mill operation. Then an attempt is made to adjust operating tumbling mills based on data from the tests. The tests, however, frequently do not correlate well with operating data. The purpose of the present work was to explore some of the similarities and differences between a simulated closed-circui.t grindability test and a batch type test. Six different minerals plus a limestone and a taconite ore were tested in the experimentation. These materials varied widely in hardness, breakage characteristics, etc. Standard dry Bond grindability tests were mn on all materials at 48, 65, 100, 150 and 200 meshes of grind. Feed material was prepared by stage cmshing to -6 mesh. Initial feed volume was 700 cc. Care was taken to maintain the standard constant weight (about 20125 gm) and number of balls (283) during all the tests. Rotational speed was 70 rpm. Table I lists the materials studied along with pertinent data regarding the materials and Bond grindabilities obtained. In addition, dry batch tests were performed on all materials. These tests were made in the same mill as was used for the Bond tests. An identical ball charge and an identical feed volume were used. After rotating the mill for a predetermined number of revolutions at the same rotational speed as for the Bond test, the material was removed and separated from the ball charge. A screen analysis was performed on this product. Knowing the original size distribution of the feed and the size distribution of the product, it was possible to calculate the grindability or grams of a particular mesh produced per revolution of the mill. After the screen analysis of the product, the various fractions were recombined and placed back in the mill for further grinding. After grinding for additional revolutions of the mill the procedure was repeated. Thus, it was possible to obtain grindabilities for each material at a number of meshes of grind and for various revolutions of the mill. Grind-abilities obtained from batch tests are shown in Table 11. COMPARISON OF BOND AND BATCH GRINDABILITIES Figs. 1A through 1D show relationships between batch and Bond grindabilities. Figs. lA, lB, 1C and 1D show respectively graphs indicating the relationships for batch tests run for 100, 300, 500 and 700 revolutions of the mill. For a particular material on each graph, points are shown for 200, 150, 100, 65, and 48 meshes of grind except for several missing coarse meshes of grind for galena which did not fall conveniently on the figures. For each material and graph the point nearest the origin is for 200 mesh, the next for 150 mesh, the next for 100 mesh, etc. Considering Fig. lA, it is interesting to note that all relationships shown are essentially straight lines. UNTIL very recently the development of high temperature alloys has been strictly empirical. It is, in fact, a great tribute to the intuition, perseverance, and industry of the practicing metallurgists of this country and abroad that the amazing increases in gas turbine service temperature over the past 15 years have been achieved with so little fundamental knowledge. The result of this development has been the realization of successful but highly complex alloys possessing five, six, or more alloying elements and correspondingly complex microstructures. Within the last few years, considerable effort has been devoted to the identification of the secondary phases in these alloys and to the correlation of the presence or absence of such phases with alloy properties. Little attention, however, has been given the problem of identification of the mechanism (s) by which such phases enhance the properties of the alloy and especially to the assessment of the particular properties of the secondary phase (either in- trinsic or relative to the matrix phase) which are basically responsible for the improvement. Conceivable mechanisms which might apply include dispersion hardening and precipitation hardening. There are two factors which are important in the development of automatic control systems for mineral preparation and concentrating processes. They are the availability of accurate and reliable on-line measuring instruments and an understanding of the effects of important variables on process behaviour. The state of automatic control for the different processes depends on the progress which has been made in these areas and this varies considerably. This is illustrated by discussion of four processes, wet ball milling and hydraulic classification, wet autogenous milling, sulphide flotation and dense medium separation in coal preparation plants. In each case the process characteristics, current control practice and future developments are discussed. Particular problems which have delayed progress are discussed.

ROLE OF GASES IN FERROUS -METALLURGICAL PROCESSES IN every process for making steel there are one or more stages where the metal is exposed to gas of one kind or another. Thus, in the open-hearth furnace, the carbon dioxide and water vapor in the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the ferrous and manganous oxides in the slag, tending to convert these to higher oxides; the higher oxides then oxidize the steel, so that indirectly the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the steel. In the Bessemer process, there is direct contact of air and steel; also, the water vapor in the air blown into the converter is continually decomposed by the molten steel, yielding hydrogen and ferrous oxide, both of which are in part taken up by the metal. In the electric-furnace processes, there is always more or less air in contact with the slag covering the metal, and this air and the gaseous reaction products from it are dissolved in the slag to some extent and thus transmitted in part to the steel. In the crucible processes, there is always entrapped air in the charges and the crucibles are more or less permeable to the gaseous products of combustion from the furnace. In all the processes of manufacture, the molten metal is exposed to air while tapping into ladles and ingot molds and has an opportunity to saturate itself with air or with gaseous or solid products generated by chemical reactions between air and steel. Sieverts1 has shown that molten metals require but a few seconds to saturate themselves with a surrounding gas. No one familiar with the operations at a steel plant needs to be reminded of the important role that gases play at all stages. The familiar "boil" of open-hearth furnaces, due to evolution of carbon monoxide when iron ore is added to the molten steel; the spectacular operation of the Bessemer converter brought about entirely by a gaseous reagent; the almost magic effect of small quantities of silicon manganese or

High-field critical transport current density (J) measurements at 4.2 °K as a Junction of applied magnetic field (H) were made on samples of cold-rolled and annealed columbium with H parallel to J. Microscopic examination of the samples revealed a well-defined planar fiber structure produced by the cold rolling. J was found to he lower when fibers are parallel to the direction of magnetic field penetration than when they are perpendicular. This effect may he a consequence of the interaction of flux movement with fiber boundaries. THE severe changes in microstructure brought about by cold working superconductors leads to profound changes in their superconducting behavior. In particular, the ability of a superconductor to carry a transport current with zero resistance (the maximum value of this current density will be called "J" in the presence of large external magnetic fields (to be referred to as "H") is greatly influenced by the microstructure. In the case of columbium, LeBlanc and Little1 and Autler et a1.2 have observed an increase in J due to cold work. LeBlanc and Little also observed an anisotropy in J in cold-rolled columbium strips, which Hake et al.3-6 have shown to depend upon the angle between H (H ? J) and the rolling plane. An increase in J due to cold work has been found in a variety of high-field superconducting alloys3'4'7-9 as has the anisotropy effect.10 First explanations of why cold work raised J invoked the idea that dislocations carried the high-field supercurrents,8,11 since cold working drastically increases the dislocation density and presumably the number of supercurrent paths. However, recent ideas on the nature of high-field superconductivity together with new experimental evidence reveal that the bulk of certain superconductors can remain superconducting in high fields while carrying high transport currents. These later developments have been discussed by Berlin-court and Hake12 and a comprehensive review has been prepared by Berlincourt.13 According to the ideas of Gorter14 and Anderson,15 one would expect that the influence of microstructure on high-field supercurrent density will depend on tine interaction between microstructure and penetrating flux and on the direction of the Lorentz

AT the annual meeting of this Institute held two years ago a new method, of estimating the grindability of coal was described, based on experimental work carried on by the Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment Station. Since that time, several organizations concerned with the testing or utilization of coal as pulverized fuel have adopted and used the method in determining the grindability of several hundred samples of coal. In addition, a series of comparative tests of this method and three others has been carried out in five laboratories under the auspices of Committee D-5 of the American Society for Testing Materials. As a result the Committee has recommended that the Bureau of Mines method, designated as the "ball-mill method," and the Hardgrove method2, previously advanced, be accepted as tentative standards3. Since the ball-mill method was originally developed and published, an opportunity has been presented to apply it to a larger number of coals and to study intensively some of the principles upon which the method is based. This paper presents a resume of these further studies and includes a comparison with the Hardgrove-machine method. Trial runs were also made with another procedure recently proposed-the C.I.T. roll-test method4.

THE problem of handling the large quantities of water encountered in the Old Dominion mine presents many features of interest. In the present paper are discussed the probable sources of water, the pumping equipment, the increased flow into the mine in the early part of 1915, culminating in the flooding of the 18th and 16th levels in March of that year, and the difficulties that were met with during the high-water period. I. PRELIMINARY The Old Dominion mine, situated 1 mile north of the town of Globe, Ariz., has long been one of the prominent copper producers of the State, and until the opening up of the copper schist deposits in the neighboring mines of Miami, was responsible for the greater part of the copper output from the Globe district. As the gradual exhaustion of its orebodies near the surface led to the downward development of the mine, more water was encountered in the western portions directly underlying the dacite formation until the drainage problem became a serious factor in the operation of the mine and in the economical extraction of the ore. A heavy inrush of water on the 10th level of the mine in 1906, preceded by still earlier water difficulties, rendered imperative the immediate installation of a pumping equipment capable of handling large flows of water. While the Old Dominion has been recognized as a wet mine since its early clays and one in which the complete control of the water situation was of paramount importance in the development of the lower levels, it is chiefly in the last nine years, since the installation of the increased pumping equipment, that the mine has developed and handled large quantities of water.

Several simplifications have been accepted in filtration theory during the past fifty years in an effort to avoid apparently intractable mathematical problems. In effect, these simplifications ignored the variation in average cake porosity and average filtration resistance with variation in pressure drop or with time. This study examines the traditional approach and shows that, in many cases, it cannot give correct design guidance. Using a set of dimensionless parameters because of the large number of significant variables, a revised theory is developed which does not require that porosity and resistance values be set constant. Graphs developed in the traditional approach (e.g., dt/dv versus v or t/v versus V) have substantial curvature near the ordinate; but this curvature is frequently ignored in theory and is easily missed in experiments. The revised theory allows more accurate design calculations, especially for compressible cakes.

With increased coal production and mechanization of coal mines many transportation problems arise. The main objective is to bring the coal to the tipple or dump it as quickly as possible. Larger and faster haulage locomotives or two locomotives connected in tandem have been adopted to solve the problem. Motor equipment, gears and control systems of locomotives to be placed on these hauls are carefully studied to meet these requirements, by an analysis of motor characteristic curves with the corresponding tractive effort curves, in order to determine the correct load for maximum efficiency and to determine the approximate schedule. Control equipment is usually considered to be the controller and resistance. Sometimes accelerating curves are calculated in order to obtain smooth starting in the least possible time without slipping the wheels. Train control is very important, but why limit this to acceleration ? Deceleratien-or-retardation of the locomotive is a part of the train control and should be given as much consideration as the control for acceleration. Types or Braking Common braking systems for mine locomotives utilize screw-type mechanical brakes, dynamic braking and the air brake. For gathering and haulage locomotives, the srrew-type mechanical brake is regarded as standard. A brake of this kind cannot be applied without much effort and lapse of time. Motormen, like other people, follow the path of least resistance, and therefore have their brakes ready for instant application—which means that the shoes are virtually dragging. Even then, a motorman bucks and plugs the motors to gain time and avoid as much physical effort as possible. "Bucking of motors" consists in turning the reverse cylinder of the controller to parallel position corresponding to the opposite direction of travel while the locomotive is in motion, without applying power from an external source. When this occurs, both motors tend to act as series generators, because the armatures are revolving and there is residual magnetism in the field circuit. Owing to slight differences in motor manufacture, one of these will generate a slightly higher potential and will overcome the generated voltage of the second and tend to drive it as a motor in the reverse Direction.-This action retards the locomotive but is very severe on the segments of the reverse cylinder and on the motor commutators. "Plugging motors" is the application of power to the motors corresponding to the opposite direction of travel. In order to "plug" the motors it is necessary first to "buck,, them (which reverses the connections to the motors) and then to apply power. Theoretically, this should be done only in an emergency, but locomotives in mine service are frequently thus treated., Dynamic braking is retardation of the locomotive by the motors acting as generators, which take no power from the line.

BASED on theories of ullins," the mechanisms of grain-boundary grooving have been determined for low-melting metals such as copper in an inert atmospheres or in liquid lead.4 The purpose of this investigation was to study grain-boundary grooving in the refractory Group VI-A metals, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, and the bcc solid-solution alloys, r-35e, 0-33e,= and -25e,' at 0.6 to 0.9 of included to see whether Mullins' theories were applicable to them as well. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The materials chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, Cr-35Re, Mo-33Re, and W-25Re were in the form of 0.050-cm-thick sheet assaying 99.98 pct or better. The nominal carbon level was generally 30 ppm. The oxygen + nitrogen + hydrogen content was -50 ppm. Mo-33Re and W-25Re were prepared by powder-metallurgy methods and supplied by Chase Brass and Copper Co. The remaining materials were arc-cast. Chromium and Cr-35Re were prepared at Battelle by arc melting, extruding, swaging, and rolling. Mo-0.003C was supplied by Climax Molybdenum Co., and Mo-0.02C and tungsten by Universal Cyclops Corp. As a source of liquid metals, tin and silver granules assaying 99.98 pct were used. Spectrographic analyses indicated the presence of -100 ppm each of iron and silicon. Vacuum melting reduced the combined gas content to c5 ppm (2.60,, 0.9N2, 0.4H2 in tin and l.602, 0.7N2, and c0.04H2 in silver). Specimens were prepared for grain-boundary grooving. Coupons 0.5 by 1.5 cm with a small hole in one end, or substrates 1.5 by 1.5 cm, were cut from sheet. The specimens were annealed in containers of the same material to provide a vapor-solid equilibrium as well as to protect them from gaseous impurities. Outgassing was done at 2 x 10"5 mm for 15 to 30 min at 1150°C for chromium and Cr-35Re, 1750°C for molybdenum and Mo-33Re, and 2600°C for tungsten and W-25Re. Then recrystallization to a stable grain size of about 0.5 mm was accomplished by annealing at least 1 hr at 1600°C for chromium, 1800°C for Cr-35Re, 2350°C for molybdenum, and 2300°C for Mo-33Re in a rhenium-element resistance furnace under 1 atm of static argon or helium. The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society, but the name has now been changed. to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees, of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which have equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. NOW that real progress is being made in building airplanes that can stand up under adverse conditions in isolated parts of the world, utilization of aviation by mining and petroleum companies is proceeding rapidly. This isolation, offering such handicaps to ordinary methods of transportation, also was the thorn in the flesh of aviation until the recent advances in plane and englue design. The accompanying illustration shows one of the six new planes just delivered to the U. S. Government for map making. The planes will be used in Department of Commerce, Coast and Geodetic Survey, Navy Hydrographic, and Insular work. There is a trap door in the bottom of the hull for a Fairchild camera which takes five pictures-vertical, N60°, E60°, S60°, and W60°-at regular intervals. It is manufactured by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp., Farmingdale, N. Y.

(written discussion?).-Regarding the statement of Mr. Ordoñez, on page 1007, concerning the synclinal curving of sedimentary beds caused by the extrusion of volcanic necks, that "this phenomenon might occur, but it is not fully proved in our fields," I beg to reply that the funnel and anticlinal-ring structure is actually associated with igneous intrusions in the Mexican oil fields, as we were able to ascertain by plotting an underground contour map and making a structural model of the oil-bearing beds of the Ebano field. (written discussion?).-The paper under discussion is not only of interest in connection with its subject but it is a contribution of considerable importance to our knowledge of the possible effect of igneous rocks upon the accumulation of petroleum in the Mexican fields.

H. R. BIANCO*—I should like to ask Mr. Collins if that statement he made about the addition of drosses to the blast furnace slowing down the blast furnace is a result of his own experience or a result of the experience of some older metallurgists; and perhaps I should ask him to define the type of drosses that he means. A. A. COLLINS (author's reply)— That has been my own personal experience with dross. On various occasions at Chihuahua we attempted to incorporate the dross in our regular blast furnace charge and to shut down the dross re-verberatory to try to save some money. As expected, we had very poor results. I think that Ed Fleming will well remember on one occasion, that was back about 1933, when we attempted the first experiment along this line, and as a result of the sulphur addition to the blast furnace to matte out the copper we ended up with hanging furnaces and mushy slags and abandoned the dross experiment, once again turning to the use of the reverbera-tory for handling dross. H. R. BIANCO—Is that dross you refer to from the drossing kettle ? A. A. COLLINS—Yes, the dross that I am referring to came from drossing kettles. Furthermore, to back up my previous assertion, I had occasion in 1943, while up at Leadville, to once again experience the routing of dross through the blast furnace with its sulphur addition, since they had no dross re-verberatory, and to observe that once thf dross was removed, the furnace was speeded up almost 100 tons a day. All of these are personal experiences and I think that Mr. Feddersen also has had a little experience along this line —in fact, I believe all of us have had some experience. H. R. BIANCO—I know at Trail they recirculate considerable dross through the blast furnaces and we also recirculate dross at Herculaneuin and I am not aware that it has done much towards slowing down the blast furnace. A. A. COLLINS—We have always had very poor results. In the first place you have got to add a sulphur addition to pick up that copper and once you do that, that sulphur is apt to combine with some of the zinc and you are going to form a little mush; before you know it you have furnace hangs and a poor working furnace. Now of course that depends on the amount of zinc you have on charge. But in 1943, Leadville had roughly about 7 pet zinc in their slag and it worked very poorly. Previously when they had 4 or 5 pet zinc in their slag it did not matter. B. L. SACKETT* At Tooele we had a great deal of experience with copper. We have always been able to keep a lead well, however, in spite of the fact we have run as much as 5 pet copper and only 15 pet lead on the charge. But regarding the handling of dross, our dross reverberatory furnace is only 7 or 8 years old. Before that we recirculated the dross through the furnace and thought we were doing a pretty nice job. Of course these things are all more or less relative—in other words you establish a certain condition much better than one of a few years ago and possibly as good as any other of which you know and you think you have pretty good results. When we first took the dross off of the blast furnace and put it through the dross reverberatory furnace we immediately found out that we had gained something very real in furnace speed. Since that time there have been occasions when, because of the dross reverberatory being down, we have had to use dross again through the blast furnace and that has checked our original experience in slowing down the furnace very definitely. So we feel that a dross reverberatory is a very valuable asset at the Tooele Plant. A. A. CENTER*—Mr. Sackett's being here reminds me of trying to run with a minimum of lead concentrates the maximum of dross producing electrolytic zinc plant residue. He came up from International Smelting Co. to help us get started on that. We took an old copper blast furnace at Great Falls, Montana, and made a lead furnace out of it by putting a lead well on the other long side which of course is a very unorthodox lead blast furnace. Our aim was to treat the residue from the electrolytic zinc plant, as I said, with a minimum of lead concentrates. That meant a maximum amount of dross. At that time selective flotation was not general practice, so our zinc concentrates ran relatively high in copper and other dross-producing elements; and of course these were largely in the zinc plant residue. I think we might call it muscle metallurgy, but we had an interesting, successful experience there and we ran for over a year thanks to Mr. Sackett's helping us get started. I have the details, but time does not permit. We did well enough so that the A. S. and R. Co. at East Helena kept boosting up the offer to us for the electrolytic zinc plant residue and there was not enough lead concentrate to supply two lead smelters there in Montana, so the matter finally finished up by the A. S. and R. Co. taking all of the residue under long term contracts.
