AS these annual occasions in honor of Henry Marion Howe continue through the years: there is progressively less likelihood that the lecturer will have had personal knowledge of Dr. Howe. The present speaker is one of those who unfortunately had no opportunity to come under the inspiring presence of this great metallurgist. A review of Howe's work shows it to cover a comprehensive range of interests and to evidence an impressive richness of detail. Not only was Howe at home in the laboratory, but he was familiar with the processes of iron and steel making and had a real understanding of them. His writings include much that is descriptive of processes with a wealth of material that is becoming of increasing historical value. He recorded his studies of the theoretical aspects of processes and published at least two process classifications, one in 1890 that was lengthy and somewhat theoretical, and a second in 1906 that was more of a practical listing. Wide as Howe's field of interest was, it is significant of the circumstances of his time that he gave- little consideration to raw materials or to their effect on iron and steel making processes. In 1933, Waterhouse, Howe lecturer for that year, presented a descriptive summary of the major steel making processes, and in 1946 Joseph discussed the blast furnace process. Otherwise Howe lectures have not dealt with processes as major subjects. In today's lecture, with no effort to describe the mechanical arrangements of iron and steel making facilities, it is proposed to examine the essential technological elements of the processes, to explore the inter-relation of these elements, and particularly to seek recognition and understanding of those factors which determine why certain processes are or are not used. The discussion of this lecture will deal with the major well-known large tonnage processes, with only such attention to processes of minor tonnage and special character as may be warranted for explanation by contrast. Subject to the errors of generalization and the shortcomings of condensation involved in presentation limited to a single hour, it is proposed to examine broadly but intensively those operations which convert raw materials into steel. It is an innovation for a Howe lecturer to discuss the raw materials of the iron and steel industry, but the changing circumstances of passing years intensify the influence of raw materials on processes and require the metallurgist to be alert for the process adjustments that may become advisable or mandatory. For a half century the metallurgical processing of iron and steel has followed a surprisingly straight path, but this does not necessarily mean that there are no curves in the road ahead. The expression "unit process " comes up with increasing frequency in discussions among metallurgists and mineral engineers, especially among those concerned with training the next generation. The unit process approach characterizes a significant advance along the road from metallurgy as an empirical art to metallurgy as a branch of engineering. The purposes of this paper are to define and list the unit processes in specific terms, to indicate the scientific and engineering principles basic to all the unit processes, and finally to show how these ideas have been applied to a reorganization of instruction in chemical metallurgy. Unit Operations and Unit Processes Metals are extracted from ores and other raw materials by stepwise procedures. In general, each metallic element is extracted by a different procedure. For many of the metals there is a choice of several flowsheets. However, the procedures all have steps in common. In fact, the many different flowsheets are all made up of a relatively small number of steps which are combined in different groups and sequences. For example, crushing, screening, roasting, sintering, melting, and gaseous reduction are steps which each appear in the Bowsheets for extracting the majority of the metals. The individual steps or flowsheet units can be designated as unit operations or unit processes. These terms are well established in the field of chemical engineering, as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' definition of chemical engineering shows: " Chemical engineering is that branch of engineering concerned with the development and application of manufacturing processes in which chemical or certain physical changes of materials are involved. These processes may usually be resolved into a coordinated series of unit physical operations and unit chemical processes. The work of the chemical engineer is concerned primarily with the design, construction, and operation of equipment and plants in which these unit operations and processes are applied. Chemistry, physics, and mathematics are the underlying sciences of chemical engineering, and economics its guide in practice."'1a In this definition, the distinction between unit operations and unit processes is that the unit operations are physical while the unit processes are chemical. Table I gives a list of the principal unit operations and unit processes of chemical engineering, taken from Shreve.1b Table 2 lists the principal unit operations and unit processes used for metal extraction. The division between unit operations and unit processes is similar to the chemical engineers' distinction and also correspollds approximately to the division of labor bctween mineral dressing and chemical metallurgy which has been customary in the past. Furthermore, it will be noted that in the proposed classification the unit processes primarily involve chemical reactions and/or changes in state of aggregation; the unit operations primarily do not involve either bulk

Relative permeability and relative electrical resistivity curves are obtained for networks of tubes with a tube radius distribution by means of a network of resistors used as an analog model. These curves are similar to those obtained from real porous media. The effects of pore size distribution and network structure on relative permeability and resistivity are demonstrated. INTRODUCTION Study of the dynamic properties of networks of single size tubes in paper IT' of this series has shown that the network model has flow properties similar to those observed on real porous media. The comparison of properties of single size tube networks with those of real porous media cannot be carried far because very few porous media have uniform size pores. The capillary pressure curve from most porous materials such as soil, sandstone, and sintered glass indicate that these materials have pore size distribution similar to those shown in Figs. 5-1, 9-1, and 10-I.† To properly test the network model, it is therefore necessary to compare the dynamic properties of real porous media with those of networks of tubes in which the tube radii are distributed accord- ing to the distributions in the aforementioned figures. A network in which the tube sizes are distributed cannot be treated in the same manner as a network of single size tubes. In the single size tube network, the relation between tube geometry, flow resistance, and tube volume did not have to be known if the assumption was made that whatever relation did exist was the same for all tubes in a particular network. In a network of distributed tube size, the relation between tube geometry and flow resistance must be known or assumed in order to replace the tubes by equivalent electrical resistors. Relation of Tube Geometry to Flow Resistance The interchangeability of tubes and electrical resistors in the network model is possible because of the analogy between Poiseuille's law and Ohm's law. Poiseuille's law for a cylinder is q= pr4/8µl ?P.........(1) where q is the volumetric rate of flow, µ is the viscosity, ?P is the pressure gradient, r is the tube radius, and 1 is the tube length. Ohm's law is I=1/R?E..........(2) where I is the flux and is equivalent to the volumetric rate in Poiseuille's law, R is the resistance, and ?E is the voltage gradient. Both laws give the flux as a function of the potential drop and the resistance of the medium. By analogy then, 1/R=pr4/8µl ?P...........(3)

RESULTS presented in a previous paper1 have shown that the strength of fired pellets made from eastern Mesabi magnetite concentrates containing 8 to 9 pct Si02 as quartz and silicates is due to several processes which occur during firing. These are: l-recrystallization and cementation of the fragmented magnetite grains; 2-formation of slag from reaction between the quartz, silicates, and available ferrous iron, followed by slag-bonding of the magnetite grains; and 3-oxidation of the magnetite to hematite and subsequent recrystallization and grain growth of this constituent. Microscopic examination of all magnetite pellets fired in one operation in small and large-scale pilot plant furnaces and possessing normal strengths shows that the processes 1,2, and 3 have taken place; where strengths are low and the pellets are otherwise sub- normal, one or more of the processes has not occurred. For example, soft and friable red pellets may contain a central core of slag-bonded recrystallized magnetite which is strong enough in itself, but the shell contains only slightly recrystallized hematite, indicating that the maximum temperature reached was too low. Processes 1 and 2 can occur only under reducing conditions, as for example, when coal is intention- ally added to the original pellets; under neutral conditions, when pellets are fired in an inert atmosphere; or when pellets are brought so rapidly to temperature in an oxidizing atmosphere that oxygen diffusion to the core lags behind the recrystallization and slagging effects. This paper presents the results of an investigation made in the metallurgical laboratory of Columbia University, New York City. The object of the investigation was to determine how the tensile strength, the elastic limit, and the size of the grain, of a pure medium-carbon steel are affected by heating to successive temperatures between 500° and 1300° C., with slow cooling therefrom. Since Dr. Sorby's first investigations into the microstructure of steel, the study of the subject has been continued by Professor Martens, Mr. F. Osmond, Professor Arnold, Professor Howe, Mr. A. Sauveur, Mr. J. E. Stead, and many others. Among many valuable and interesting papers I mention the following as having a special bearing upon this investigation.* " Microstructure of Steel," by Albert Sauveur, Trans., xxii., 546 (1893); Microscopic Metallography," by F. The physical and chemical properties for the metalliferrous feed materials to the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace are defined and the means of achieving these properties by the sintering or briquetting routes discussed. Modern sinter plant performance data is included with a plant flow sheet showing draughting patterns. The necessity for ensuring an adequate SO2 content in sinter machine gases when roasting sulphide materials to enable conversion to sulphuric acid in a contact acid plant is described. The ability of the process to consume limited quantities of oxide materials, residues from other processes and other secondary sources is discussed. The argument for a briquetting route is developed out of this limitation and the merits of cold and hot briquetting examined. Development work on the hot briquetting route for this purpose is briefly described and several flow sheets outlining possible applications for hot briquetting to different raw material situations including the preparation of low lead charges for the furnace are presented.

Single crystals of aluminurn were reduced 90 pct in diameter by extrusion at 296" and 77°K. The resultant double fiber texture had a strong (111) component with a weak (001) component. The relative anzounts of these components varied with starting orientation. Decreasing the Lemperatuve of defovtnation increased the amount of (001) texture component in crystals with inilia1 orientations near (111). The starting orientation and temperature of deformation strongly affected the morphology of the (001) component. The effects of orientation and Lemperatuve upon the distribution of the (001 ) texture component in extruded aluminum single crystals were rationalized on the basis of deformation band formation and interaction. MANY papers since the early 1920s have discussed the occurrence of the double fiber texture (111) + (001) in wires and rods of deformed fcc metals. Aside from the reporting of experimental results for the various metals under a variety of fabrication conditions, emphasis has been placed on two related problems. One problem deals with the prediction of ideal end orientations based on the glide systems and flow directions. The other problem seeks the reason why different amounts of each component may be produced by the same fabrication schedule for metals apparently having the same deformation systems. Some of the difficulties in developing a satisfactory explanation have their origin in the experiments themselves. One mistake has often been the assumption of an initially randomly oriented specimen or complete ignorance of effects of starting orientation. Recent studies by Grewen and Wassermann,1 Cullity and co-workers,2' and McHargue4 have shown that the initial orientation may be the most important factor in determining the final orientation. Hence only limited comparisons of data from different studies can be made unless all conditions of the initial material are specified. Another question has been the nature of the (001) component. Hibbards suggested that any (001) present was the result of re crystallization during fabrication. Although Fleischer6 found no (001) texture in aluminum swaged at room temperature, and Dayal 7 found that component to disappear at very high reductions, a double fiber texture has usually been reported for aluminum. Vandermeer and McHargue showed that, while some (001) in aluminum may be the result of recrystallization, much of this component has its origin in the deformation process. Ahlborn and Wassermanng found the (001) component in silver deformed at low temperature not to be the product of recrystallization.

IK the dry-crushing of ores, either by stamps, rolls, or other machinery, it is essential that the material should be free from moisture. Hence a contrivance which effects this with economy, and is of durable and compact construction, is a great desideratum. It is claimed for the below-described shelf dry-kiln, that it possesses these qualifications in a high degree. The construction of the shelf dry-kiln is based on the Hasenclever principle. That is to say, a number of inclined shelves are arranged zig-zag above each other in a vertical shaft, having openings or slits where they meet, on which the ore rests in a stratum, the thickness of which is governed by the width of the slits and the inclination of the shelves. If a portion of the charge is removed at the end of the bottom shelf, a sliding motion of the ore takes place on all shelves above, and the top shelf is replenished from a hopper set over it. It will be seen that the shaft is divided by the shelves into a number of triangular prismatic spaces. Through these the hot gases from a fireplace are made to circulate, each space communicating with the next one by a flue arranged in the sidewall of the shaft. These flues being located on alternate sides of the shaft, a continuous passage is formed through the whole structure. After thus stating the principle of the construction, its details will be easily understood by reference to the drawings, Fig. 1 to Fig. 5. The drawings, Fig. 1 to Fig. 4, represent two kilns united into one structure. The cast iron shelves(a) are 2 feet 4 inches wide and 5 feet long, with sides and a back 4 inches high, and are cast a full halfinch thick. How they rest on the brackets(d), and interlock each other, is shown in Fig. 5. Three such shelves, with an inclination of 38') are placed in one row in a brick shaft 7 feet 1/2 inch wide and 4 feet deep. The ore hoppers(g) rest on the iron bems(f). At the end of the bottom shelves are the discharge-doors(b), with shoots projecting beyond the front wall. A swinging apron(e) keeps the ore in place. C. G. McLACHLAN*-I have read this paper with considerable interest and wish to congratulate the authors on the care with which they carried out their experiments and for the detailed sizing data they have presented. 011 the other hand I do not feel that these data establish their contention that "with other factors the same, the work accomplished in a fine crushing rod mill is directly proportional to the rotating speed." My reason for making this statement is that their conclusion is based on the percentage of minus 65 mesh material produced at each of the speeds at which their tests were run. The rod mill is, however, not a fine grinding machine and therefore figures based on minus 65 mesh production are figures outside the range at which it operates to best advantage. Further, if rod mill performance is to be judged on the production of such material it should have been established that a rod mill will produce it as effectively as a ball mill. To check this last point I have gone over some of the rod and ball mill grind-ing figures for our Waite-Atnulet operation and find that the ball mill at that property produces more minus 65 mesh material per horsepower than the rod mill. Moreover, this comparison is even more favorable to the ball mill if it is limited to minus 100 mesh production. It therefore seems to me that the most satisfactory basis on which to try to com-pare the performance of the rod mill in the present case is by taking a weighted average of all the new surface produced per horsepower. W. H. Coghill3 has published data which can be applied to the sizing figures presented by the authors, and if this is done the units of new surface per horsepower produced in the Tennessee tests are as follows: Admittedly the increment of increase in new surface per horsepower shown in the foregoing figures is not great, but its trend is nevertheless definitely in favor of slower speed operation, for the conditions under which these particular tests were run. I also feel that some information regarding liner contour should have been given as I think it will be found that a mill which is equipped with liners which lift the rod load can be run at a slower speed than a mill in which the liners are comparatively smooth. J. F. MYERS and F. M. LEWIS (authors' reply)—The position taken by Mr. McLachlan is to be respected even though we are all aware of the faults of surface considerations. As he points out. the increment of increase is very small. It is so small in fact that for all practical purposes it does not conflict with the conclusions of the paper. The authors appreciate Mr. McLachlan's comprehensive study of the data.

The rapidity of oxygen steelmaking has created renewed interesl in the mechanisms and kinetics of the various processes involved. These studies can now be approached with increased confidence because of the more adequate thermodynamics, physical chernislry, and relevant engineering infornzation available. These combine to offer promise of useful control and automation if the details of each specific problem can be sufficiently well-defined. The hot filament microscope provides new insig-hi into many of these problems by direct observation at temperature, allowing the appraisal of the relative importance of thermal gradients, convection, and intermediate phases. All of these have a direct bearing on the overall rates and control of most pyrometallurgical processes. It is one of the special privileges of the Howe Lecturer to become better acquainted with this distinguished man. All of us interested in the metallurgy of iron and steel have developed some sense of his widespread influence by the annual reference to his work in these Memorial Lectures. Each lecturer since 1923 has been able to identify his personal specialty with the broad interests of Professor Howe. This has become even more rewarding with the background information from Professor Gensamer's monograph, "Henry Marion Howe's Contributions to Metallurgy, which brings out his happy combination of intellectual and professional activities. Beyond this, I found my personal bond with Professor Howe in his book on The Metallurgy of Sleel first published in 1891.' After a detailed discussion of the dephosphorizing action of slags, he relates the mineral species identified in the frozen sample to the chemistry of the fused slag with the question, "Is it not most philosophic to hold that these independent entities were wholly integrated in the initial magma; that their presence in it was wholly

The possible solution of some of the problems raised in H. L. Hartman's article "Determining Ventilation Requirements for Continuous Miners," which appeared in the March 1962 issue of MINING ENGINEERING, is offered by recent investigative work done at the Safety in Mines Research Establishment, Ministry of Power, Sheffield, England. Highlights of this research are outlined here. Accumulations and layers of methane form in a mine roadway because it is difficult to mix methane with air beneath it by turbulent diffusion. Such mixing involves work contrary to buoyancy forces. In specifying requirements for good ventilation it is not, therefore, sufficient to state that the airflow must be turbulent in the absence of methane. Fundamental work at SMRE on the behavior of methane roof layers has led to the formulation of rules for controlling methane roof layers which specify the ventilation velocity needed to ensure adequate mixing in terms of the rate of flow of methane into the layer (V = cu ft per min) and the airway width (D = ft). A "layering number" for methane and air has been defined by [U37/V/D] where U is the mean ventilation velocity in ft/min in the upper half of the airway. In a horizontal airway there is no mixing by turbulent diffusion for values of the layering number less than about 2, resulting in extensive roof layers. But with a layering number of 5, the layer is "brought under control"-i.e., a further increase in the layering number will shorten the length of the layer only slightly, and a small decrease in the layering number will cause only a small increase in the length of the layer. In a sloping roadway with uphill ventilation, higher values of the layering number are needed to achieve this "controlled" condition; the values range from about 5 at small slopes to about 8 at a slope of 1: 10. In downhill ventilation it is possible for layers to "back" against the ventilation, i.e., to flow uphill. The critical condition for preventing backing can also be expressed in terms of the layering number. Backing will be prevented if layering numbers are about 3 for small slopes and about 4.5 for large slopes; these values for downhill ventilation also give good control of the layer.

RECRYSTALLIZATION of cold-worked metals has long been known to proceed by a process of nucleation and growth.1 When a cold-worked metal is heated to a temperature at which recrystallization will ensue, nuclei of new grains, essentially strain-free, appear and grow. As the process proceeds, nuclei continue to appear and to grow, until the cold-worked matrix has been entirely consumed and recrystallization has been completed (Fig. I). Conducted isothermally, a measurement of the fraction of the matrix recrystallized plotted against time, yields an isothermal recrystallization curve, showing the time course of the recrystallization process (Fig. 2).2 Evidently, then, the rate of recrystallization is determined by the rate at which nuclei form and the rate at which they grow. The rate of nucleation N is the number of nuclei that form in unit time in unit volume of the unrecrystallized matrix, and the rate of growth G is the increase in radius of the recrystallized grain per unit time. In recent years attempts have been made to determine N and G as these vary with the well-recognized variables affecting recrystallization: time, temperature, degree of deformation, etc.' Such studies yield information that is more fundamental than that conveyed by the conventional recrystallization diagram,' since the rate of recrystallization is thus analyzed into its two component rates.2 Methods are now available by which N and G can be measured, and analytical expressions have been developed for the interrelationships among N, G, the isothermal recrystallization curve, and the final grain size, which greatly facilitate analysis.2-4 The application of these methods has been demonstrated recently for the recrystallization of silicon ferrite.2 Data on N and G in dependence upon the recognized recrystallization variables are, however, very fragmentary;* values of N and G have been determined for some metals, but the effect of temperature, which would yield the fundamentally important activation energies, has been too little studied. Thus far there has been no detailed study of the recrystallization of any one metal in terms of N and G over appreciable ranges of the variables time, temperature, degree of deformation, and original grain size. It is the purpose of the present paper to provide such a study, employing aluminum.

ThE nickel and cobalt base superalloys employed in gas turbine engines under some conditions' oxidize at an accelerated rate when exposed at elevated temperatures to atmospheres containing minor quantities of sea salt. It is generally agreed by investigators in the field that the major steps comprising this phenomena of accelerated oxidation, also called hot corrosion or more commonly, sulfidation, are a) a slag composed primarily of Na2S04 is formed on turbine components, b) the protective oxide scale is rendered ineffectual, c) the slag reacts with. the substrate to form metal sulfides, and d) the substrate is rapidly oxidized. Sodium sulfate, a minor constituent of sea salt, is formed within the gas turbine engine from the reactions between NaC1, the major constituent of sea salt, and the oxides of sulfur.' Depending upon concentration, engine compression ratio, and temperature, the Na2S04 will be present in the gaseous or condensed state. It has been determined that in order for sulfi-dation to occur the Na2S04 must be present in the condensed state.' Although a number of sulfidation mechanisms have been postulated, there is no consistent explanation of oxide scale breakdown and subsequent catastrophic oxidation. Some investigators believe that after oxide scale breakdown, the Na2SO4 reacts with the substrate to form lower-valent sulfur compounds. The accelerated rate of oxidation is due to oxidation of a nickel-sulfide phase." Other investigators believe that sulfur from the fused salt reacts with chromium in the alloy to form chromium-rich sulfides; thereby depleting the alloy of an element which imparts oxidation resistance.3,4 This publication will demonstrate that the accelerated rate of oxidation associated with sul-fidation is due to interactions between Na20, a con-stituent of NazSO.,, ancl the substrate. The aim of this study was to separate and determine the effect of compounds of sulfur and sodium on the oxidation kinetics of various nickel-base superalloys, in order to elucidate the sulfidation mechanism. The work reported herein is sponsored in part by the Naval Ship and Development Center-Investigation of EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The nickel base alloys B-1900, U-700, and Waspaloy were chosen for this study. The nominal compositions are presented in Table I. The specimens, approximately 1 in. by 1 in. by 0.060 in. received in the "as cast" condition were polished with 600 grit emery, washed, and rinsed with acetone immediately prior to oxidation experiments. Sulfida-tion attack was duplicated in the laboratory by apply-ing a saturated aqueous solution of Na2S04 onto the al loy substrate and subsequently exposing the specimens in oxygen at elevated temperature. The method of Na2S04 application is described elsewhere in detail.6 In another set of experiments the affected substrate microstructure associated with sulfidation was reproduced free of the normal oxide scale, by reacting and diffusing elemental sulfur into the alloy. The experimental procedure is also described elsewhere in detail. All oxidation studies were performed using an Ainsworth thermobalance type RV-AU-1, which is readable to 0.01 mg and is reproducible to ±0.03 mg. The specimens, introduced into a heated furnace, were exposed in the temperature range 800" to 1000°C

Certain influences of oxygen on iron have been known for many years and it has always been considered one of the worst enemies of the iron and steel founders. Nobody had a good word for it, hence little was done to make use of this oxygen. In all the fields of foundry practice, the desideratum was "melt without oxidation of the metal." In the consideration of the influence of oxygen on cast iron, we must not confuse this condition with oxidized iron caused by poor melting conditions, due to a high bed, heavy charges, low coke ratio, excessive melting rate, high blast, or poor charging. It is admitted that oxygen absorbed by iron melted under these conditions has a deleterious effect on the properties of the iron. The writer has had experience both in the melting under such poor conditions and in remedying these bad conditions and considers the product far inferior to iron melted under normal conditions. As stated by Dr. Richard Moldenke,l such iron has a higher melting point and high combined carbon, is sluggish, and contains slags and oxides in solution in the liquid, causing slag inclusions and gas occlusions, 'thus producing defective castings. This oxidized condition cannot be counteracted or removed by any of the known deoxidizers; it can be remedied only by proper melting conditions. Such iron is redly burned, whereas the iron considered in this paper was melted under normal conditions with moderate blast, correct bed height, light charges of iron, and low coke consumption and is not in this category at all. In 1914, the late J. E. Johnson, Jr., startled the metallurgists of the . world when he published his results on the advantages of oxygen on cast iron.2 His work is so convincing and so logical, in spite of the common and well-established notions on the subject, that nobody has been able to refute a single argument. Such an eminent authority on iron and steel metallurgy as Prof. H. M. Howe has accepted the work in all its details in his latest book.3 The work of J. E. Johnson, Jr., has revolutionized the metallurgy of cast iron and it seems apparent that all future work must include an oxygen determination just as we include silicon, sul-

MEETING for the thirteenth time in New York as part of the five-ring circus known as the Annual Meeting A.I.M.E., the Coal Division experienced a wartime boom in attendance. Technical sessions were crowded and whereas 65 seats were set up for the annual luncheon meeting of the Division over 100 members showed up, many of whom had to be fed elsewhere. Possibly the Coal Division should adopt "13" as its lucky number. Discussions at technical sessions, formal and informal, were lively. Those papers containing material directly concerned with the war, or containing information that might be usable for war industries, were enthusiastically received. Some criticism was made in regard to the present method of handling discussions and it was suggested that better success would be had in getting discussions in the record by the use of hired reporters. This is being considered by the executive committee of the Coal Division.

An apparatus for the determination of fluid-fluid interfacial tension by the pendant drop method has been constructed. The apparatus is refined beyond those previously described in that the samples are introduced into an evacuated windowed cell without contacting air or mercury. Interfacial tension data are reported for the water-methane system between 74 and 280°F and 15 and 15,000 psi. The variation of wettability of the stainless-steel dropper tip with pressure and temperature was observed incidentally to the measurements. INTRODUCTION The most refined previous apparatus --for the determination of fluid-fluid interfacial tension at reservoir conditions was built by Hauser and Michaels.' These authors used the pendant drop method, previously investigated by Andreas, Hauser, and Tucker.' Recently, Fordham3 has made the pendant drop method an absolute one by numerical integration of the differential equation of drop shape. It is necessary to know the difference in density of the two fluids and the acceleration due to gravity in order to evaluate the interfacial tension from measurements of drop dimensions. Contact angle is not involved in the measurements by this method. Some precise tests of the method have been made at atmospheric pressure and 77°F by Douglas," who found agreement with established values to within about 0.1 per cent for water and air, cyclohexane and air, benzene and air, and benzene and water. No values of interfacial tension from the recent pendant drop apparatusJ have been published by Hauser and Michaels. However, values for the water-benzene and water-decane systems are given in Michaels' thesis5 or Dressures from 15 .to 10,000 psi and temperatures from 73 to 268ºF. Some determinations on gas-oil and gas-water systems in the range of 15 to 4,000 psi and 78 to 178°F have been made by Hozott,' by the drop-volume method. The capillary rise method has been used to investigate the interfacial tension in gas-oil systems at 88°F to several thousand psi by Swartz.7 Other determinations in gas-oil systems at pressures under 1,000 psia have been made by Jones: and Beecher and Parkhurst.9 The scarcity of data for pressures above 5.000 psi is apparent. APPARATUS An assembly drawing of the working section of the interfacial tenqion apparatus is given in Fig. 2. 'The endanant drop (A) is housed in a pressure chamber having glass windows (B). An agitator (6) is provided. The metal parts of the apparatus coming into contact with the sample are made of AISI: Type 316 steel. Drain grooves are provided around the whdows so that the sample in contact with the O-rings is not returned to the working section when the pressure is reduced. A schematic arrangement of the apparatus is given in Fig. 3. The working section containing the pendant drop (A) is filled by samples from bombs (B) with the aid of the vacuum system (C). The O-ring sealed pistons (D) used to separate the sample from the hydraulic fluid are shown together with the pressure production and measurement system (E). A front view of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Most of the hydraulic system is at the top of the panel. The pump and displacement piston are at the lower right. The Variacs for the air bath heaters. the camera. and the vacuum gauge are a1so visible on the panel. The working section together with a window closure and a drop-forming tip closure are shown in Fig. 9. The carbon arc light source with filter is visible in the upper part of the picture. Two sides of the air bath with the impeller and a part of the convection shield can also be seen. The assembled air bath is shown in Fig. 10.
