(Washington Meeting, May, 1965.) THE remarks of Dr. Rathbun in his address of welcome render it unnecessary that I dwell either upon the history or aims of the National Museum, and enable me to proceed at once with a brief descriptive outline of the Department for which I am responsible, and this with particular reference to that division devoted to applied geology. The amount of geological material brought together prior to 1876, under the various Congressional acts quoted, was, though valuable, comparatively small. It consisted mainly of the collections made by Professor J. D. Dana and his assistants during the Wilkes Exploring Expedition; by the various geologists accompanying the surveys of the Pacific railroads in 1854-55; the Surveys West of the 100th Meridian under the direction of the Engineering Corps of the Army; the United States geological surveys under direction of Dr. F. V. Hayden ; and the various Land Office surveys. Prior to 1873 there were no paid assistants to care for these collections. They were studied, if studied at all, by " collabrators," so-called, several of whom had offices and even sleeping apartments in the Smithsonian Institution. In the list of these collaborators are found such names as Conrad, Cope, Gabb, Leidy, Lesquereux, Meek, and Newberry. The building now occupied by the National Museum was designed primarily to make room for the great mass of material secured in 1876 at the close of the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. As completed in 1880, it afforded opportunity for expansion and incidental organization on much more practical basis than had previously existed. This found expression in the creation of numerous departments with salaried officials to take charge of the various collections. With the appointment of Dr. George W. What attracts young engineering graduates into the coal industry? What do these young men expect of a career in coal mining? These questions are often asked and debated by mining men throughout the country. In order to present a comprehensive answer to them, an opinion survey was conducted at West Virginia University's School of Mines among the junior and senior classes and part of the sophomore class. The tabulation of the answers showed that the present-day mining engineering student is an older, more mature individual as compared with former years and as compared with other present-day college students. The average age of the country's record-breaking 150,000 college graduates is 24 years. Among this year's mining graduates at West Virginia University, 78% are of this age or older. Over half (54%) of those polled in the survey are married. This is com- pared to 30% as a national figure. Of those married, 38% have one child and over 6% have two children. The entire senior group covered by this survey has averaged almost three years in the armed forces. An article entitled "The Class of '49" in the June issue of Fortune magazine states that this year's class is the oldest, most mature class in history. Our survey indicates that the mining engineering students at West Virginia University are well above the average in this respect.

Mica is an orchid among minerals. It is formed in pegmatites, one of the most bizarre of igneous formations, and is exceeded by few other minerals in the perfection it may attain as to size, color, and cleavage. First used for window glazing, as an ornament and article of trade, it has become one of the most essential insulators of electricity, heat, and shock. Most internal combustion engines use mica condensers or capacitors and such machines of war as planes, tanks, and submarines are immobile without it. The original manuscript of this guide was written in April 1943 at the peak of war emergency. It was not used because shortly thereafter a decision was made to buy on a one price basis eliminating differentials for both quality and size. This is now presented with the thought that from the standpoint of preparedness we can only consider another war imminent and every effort should be made to set up in usable form the experience gained during the Second Morld War. Colonial Mica Corp. was set up by Metals Reserve Co. as a wholly owned government agency to encourage production of domestic mica and to purchase it. It soon became the exclusive buyimg agency for such mica. The writer as Southern Manager called on all the private agencies buying mica to assist in formulating buying policies, methods, and prices. A meeting was held for that purpose in Asheville, N. C., July 20, 1942. In the general discussion the first two hours of the meeting it was decided that the following factors should be considered in pricing strategic mica: clearness, flatness, trimming, color, classification (size and quality), free splitting, hardness, and air inclusions. Most of the mica miners have been buying strategic mica, according to the mine, as No. 1, No. 2, or Nos. 1 and 2 combined. In addition to these grades of strategic mica they have been buying three lower grades of mica, electric (vegetable-stained), black-spotted and black-stained. A number of mines were named one by one and the buyers present gave their opinions as to the basis they would use in buying the sheet mica from each. It was suggested that in addition to the prices already published, prices be posted up to 10 pct higher for special quality and preparation and prices be posted 25 pct lower than the published prices for the lowest acceptable grades of strategic mica, giving the buyers authority to make intermediate prices according to the quality and preparation. It was thought desirable at the same time to announce prices for nonstra-tegic mica where such quality is being obtained in mines producing strategic mica and where it would be necessary to take the output in order to get the strategic mica. It was also suggested that the price of electric and black-spotted mica be 50 pct below the price of the lowest grade of strategic mica and the price of black-stained mica be 60 pct below the price of lowest grade strategic mica. The few experienced buyers available were employed but they were inadequate for the job and others had to be trained. All needed a guide or primer of some kind to attain systematic procedure and consistent prices in their respective buying areas. The Mica Buyers Guide was formulated for that purpose based on experience gained in the first six months of buying. The Preface to the original guide was as follows: The purpose of this guide is to serve as a text in training beginners and as a handbook for experienced buyers of the instructions which have been issued up to this time. At the meeting of prospective buyers last summer, it developed that the first essential to attain uniformity must be some kind of check sheet. Our "Mica Buyers Report" was developed for this purpose and forms the backbone of this guide. Price is determined according to size, quality and preparation. Size can be measured, but no system of measurement or machine has been devised which can be substituted for the trained eye of the buyer to deterrnine quality and preparation. Although the "One Price" system was instituted and the "Guide" not used, the buyers were required to continue making out a "Mica Buyers Report" (Fig1) with each lot of mica purchased. RECENT interest in thermoelectric devices has been directed toward studies of the properties of thermoelectric materials of semiconducting solid compounds with little attention given to ionic and semiconducting liquids such as aqueous solutions, fused salts, and mattes. One type of thermoelectric system is the thermocell: a nonisothermal galvanic cell with two identical electrodes at different temperatures connected by an electrolyte bridge. An electromotive force, v, is generated which is a function of the electrode reactions and the properties of the electrolyte according to the Eastman' equation: where S* is the entropy change of the system arising from the electrode reactions and by heat transferred by ion migration and by thermal conduction. The quantity nF is the product of equivalents passed and Faraday's constant. A value of S* of 23.06 cal per "C is equivalent to 1 mv-Faraday per "C. The symbol, a, is used for dV/dT in analog to the See-beck coefficient of solid-state thermoelements. de Bethune2 has calculated the temperature coefficients of the electromotive force of a large number of nonisothermal aqueous cells from measurements on the nonisothermal temperature coefficients of the standard hydrogen electrode, combined with data on the isothermal temperature coefficients of half-cells tabulated in the literature. Values of these coefficients (a) in de Bethune's compilation ranged up to 3 mv per C. In particular he reported a value of +2.059 mv per "C at 25'C for the cell: Fe (aqueous, unit activity) (aqueous, unit activity) written for the hot-electrode reaction. The positive sign indicates that the hot electrode is positive (an "n-type thermocell"). In analog to a solid-state p-n system, it would be possible to couple two thermocells together to form a system in which the figure of merit could be calculated by adding the temperature coefficients according to the relationship described by offee:' where a is the Seebeck coefficient in volts per "C, p is the specific resistivity in ohm-cm, and K is the thermal conductivity in watts per cm "C. Even though ionic systems have rather high electrical resistivities compared with semiconducting and metallic systems, it was felt that a preliminary study of one ionic system should be made to establish some basis for evaluating the possibility of a p-n thermocell for energy conversion. Accordingly the Fe", Fe"' system was studied as a possible component for a p-n system. A glass system was constructed consisting of two vertical water-jacketed tubes connected by a horizontal tube, Fig. 1. Platinum-black electrodes 1 cm by 1 cm in dimension were inserted in each vertical tube with thermometers to register the electrode-compartment temperatures. The temperature of the electrode compartments was controlled by circulating water from thermostatted baths around the electrode compartments. The electromotive force of the cell was then read by a potentiometer for zero current as a function of the temperature of the hotter electrode. Current output of the cell for varying external loads was also measured. The cell resistance was measured by means of a bridge circuit with 10,000 cps signal and oscilloscope. Resistance measurements were converted to specific resistivity by calibrating the cell with a solution of known conductivity.

FoR the convenience of those who do not care to enter into the details of this long essay, I begin with a summary of the most important results it presents. The extraction of silver by the lixiviation-process from ores which have been subjected to a chloridizing-roasting, is based upon the fact that silver chloride is easily soluble in solutions of sodium or calcium hyposulphite, and that silver is precipitated from such solutions by an alkaline sulphide, with regeneration of the hyposulphite salts. In case the ore contains lead a large portion of the latter is and dissolved, lead sulphate being soluble in hyposulphite solutions. If, at the same time, copper is present, the sulphides precipitated from the solution, contain silver, copper, and lead, a combination of metals not desirable for subsequent treatment. Mr. E. H. Russell, of Park City, Utah, is the inventor and the patentee in the United States and several foreign countries of a new lixiviation-process, based upon the chemical facts discussed in this paper. Mr. Russell has discovered that lead can be completely separated from a sodium hyposulphite solution, as lead carbonate, by sodium carbonate or purified soda-ash, without precipitating any copper or silver. After decanting the solution from the lead carbonate, silver and copper are obtained from it in the usual way. This method of separating lead prohibits the use of calcium poly-sulphide as a precipitant for the sulphides, because any calcium entering the regenerated lixiviationsolution would also be precipitated as a carbonate with the lead by soda-ash. Hence, a sodium sulphide must be employed. A full investigation has demonstrated that this is by no means detrimental. Sodium sulphide and hyposulphite are more advantageously used in the lixiviation-process than the corresponding calcium-salts. The use of industrial minerals by the chemical industry as raw materials for manufacturing and in processing spans a wide assortment of minerals. This chapter aims to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Its objective, to describe the uses of industrial minerals in the manufacture of chemicals, is attained by considering minerals used by the chemical industry in terms of the chemical element required and by giving particular emphasis to market factors. The mineral aspect, which is covered in the commodity chapters, is subordinated and attention is focused on the chemical and market aspects. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. The elements derived from petroleum, hydrogen and carbon, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potash, and nitrogen for fertilizers and titanium dioxide for pigments. After eliminating on this basis, our definition leaves six elements of major importance: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry as shown in Table 1 "Salt Brine Derivatives" (Anon., 1967), which charts the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake type brines which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland type brines from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake type yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak type produced mainly for lithium. Table 2 (Jones, 1973) affords an overview of the chief industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products.

The deposition of calcium carbonate scale on surface and subsurface production equipment creates an operation problem in many oil fields. The formation water in which the carbonate-scale-forming components are initially dissolved becomes supersaturated with calcium carbonate as a result of the drop in pressure during production. The continuous flow of a supersaturated solution through the production equipment results in the growth of a dense layer of calcium-carbonate crystals. For a scale layer to be built up, the supersaturated formation water should contact the walls of the production equipment. The tendency for scale to be deposited, therefore, will be low, if the crude has a low water cut and if the water is finely dispersed in the oil. A scale problem will occur, if at a high water cut part of the water is present as free water. The rate of scale deposition will then be approximately proportional to the rate of free water production. Depending upon where the formation water becomes supersaturated, scale may be deposited in the flow line only, in both flow line and tubing, and in some cases even in the perforations and in the formation near the wellbore. In the South Sumatran fields (Indonesia) the main difficulties encountered due to the deposition of calcium-carbonate scale have been restriction of flow through tubings and flow lines, wear and abrasion of plungers and liners, and stuck plungers or wellhead valves. So far, the only methods of combating the *Presently associated with Brunei Shell Petroleum Co., Ltd.. Seria. scale problem have been routine acidizing and additional well pulling. As for the pumping wells, it was estimated that some 50 percent of the total well-pulling effort was directly attributable to scale deposition. The most promising alternative was to prevent the deposition of calcium carbonate scale by means of chemicals. Inorganic polyphosphates such as sodium hexametaphosphate and trisodium polyphosphate are known to retard the formation of scale by the "threshold action". They are adsorbed on specific faces of the crystal nuclei and thus prevent crystal growth, thereby stabilizing supersaturation. Polyphosphates are effective at very low concentrations ( a few ppm), and far less than stoichiometric quantities are required to keep the scaling ions in solution. Recent investigations on barium sulfate scale1 have confirmed this mechanism. The types of polyphosphate mentioned can be applied as concentrated aqueous solutions either squeezed into the formation, lubricated down the annulus or injected via macaroni string. Several squeeze jobs with polyphosphate solutions have been carried out in the South Sumatran fields, however, with disappointing results. Lubrication down the annulus and injection through a macaroni string were not considered attractive in this area because of the kind of equipment and the degree of supervision these techniques require. Polyphosphates are also available in a granular, glassy form, which, in contrast with the readily soluble types already mentioned, show an extremely low

The Telfer Project, Australia's newest, largest, and most remote gold mine treats 480 kt of ore grading 9.33 g/t derived from open pit mining operations. Coarse gold is recovered by gravity concentration with jigs and further upgraded wing a continuous strake launder table, and by amalgamation. Remaining gold is recovered in a cyanide circuit and incorporates flat bottom air agitators, counter current decantation (CCD) and stellar filters for clarification and precipitate removal. Overall recovery into a bullion averages 98%. The mill incorporates a number of design features that allow for maximum efficiency and security wing a minimum number of operation personnel.

A quantitative method for evaluating density of slime coatings has been developed and applied to formation of iron oxide slime coatings on quartz and on corundum. Slime coating density is related to flotation recovery and to properties of the electrical double layer at mineral surfaces. IN spite of considerable study, the nature of slime coatings in flotation is still not completely understood. However, phenomena that control floc-culation and dispersion of colloidal systems are now interpreted in terms of electrical double layers.",' Colloids will flocculate even though the particles carry the same charge, but when two dispersed colloids of opposite charge are mixed. flocculation ensues even more rapidly. Analogous phenomena seem responsible for slime coating on minerals in flotation systems. To shed new light on the issue it was considered desirable to devise a tool that would measure slime coatings. The usual method has been to examine photographs of presumably representative surfaces, after. an intervening washing in running water. But such an examination is non-quantitative, and the changes in chemical environment represented by the washing may have removed the slime coatings that existed during flotation. To provide the possibility for a correlation with electrical double layer phenomena, the experiments were made with quartz, corundum, and iron oxide, for which elec-trokinetic data are available.'-" Since the properties of the electrical double layers of these oxides depend on the pH of the solution, pH will be the most important variable. Furthermore, because the zero point of charge for silica, iron oxide, and alumina occurs at pH 3.7, 8, and 9.5, respectively, the relative charge on the slime and mineral can be changed over wide ranges. Because of its practical importance in quartz flotation, iron oxide powder was chosen as the slime. Also, its uniform composition, contrasting color, and ease of analysis make experimentation simple. In this investigation, correlation was sought between the effect on flotation recovery of slime addition and slime coating density. Materials and Methods Details are available in a thesis by Miaw." The quartz was selected from pure Brazilian crystalline quartz, crushed, sized (65/150 mesh) acid-cleaned, washed, and stored in conductivity water. The corundum (synthetic alumina of high purity prepared by Linde Co., Chicago) was crushed, sized (65/100 mesh) deslimed, boiled in nitric acid, washed, and stored in conductivity water. The iron oxide slime, reagent-grade ferric oxide (—400 mesh) from Allied Chemical & Dye Corp., was heated to 160°C, cooled, and stored in a vacuum desiccator. In the electron microscope the slime particles appeared to be about 0.3µ in size, but their large specific surface (87,900 cm per g, by gas-adsorption method, using krypton) suggests that the actual particles are smaller than 0.3r. Had they been perfect nonporous spheres, they would have had a diameter of 0.13µ.

Some of US have been impressed with the need for a better understanding of the future place of the engineer in the petroleum industry. In academic work we are continually asked to advise students as to the opportunities in different directions, to guide them in their selection of professions, and it would be extremely helpful to those in academic lines of work to have the opinion of engineers from the industry relative to the need for petroleum engineers. IS the industry going to require a continually growing number of engineers in the future years, or have we perhaps reached equilibrium in that regard ? In anticipation of this meeting, I undertook to canvass opinion among a number of engineers of my acquaintance and I have been rather astonished to learn that the expenditure on engineering salaries in the producing branch of the oil industry is extremely low. I have figures from eight or 10 of the larger oil companies and it seems to be a fair statement on the basis of these figures to say that the average American oil company is devoting less than 2 per cent. of its gross expenditures in oil production to the payment of engineering salaries. A few examples will be of interest. I shall not mention names of individual companies, but one large Mid-Continent company is spending slightly less than 1 per cent. of its gross expenditure—that is, less than 1 per cent. of the total expenditure in the producing department—on engineering salaries and about as much on engineering research, which might properly be regarded as a phase of its engineering work. Another Mid-Continent company is spending about 11/4 per cent. on engineering salaries. A large California company is spending about l1/2 per cent. The largest figure that has come to my attention is that of an important Rocky Mountain and Mid-Continent company that is spending a little more than 6 per cent., but that is apparently an extreme case. THE work of, the Mining Methods Committee is now well under way. Following discussions previous to and during the February meeting, an Outline for Papers on Mining Methods was prepared, and over a thousand copies have now been distributed to committee men, to section secretaries and to members who have indicated any interest in the subject. The objective of the committee is to prepare a symposium on mining methods which will be of real practical value to the operator and engineer in the solution of every-day mining problems. It is planned to cover the entire field of mining in such a way that the different branches of mining, such as coal and ore (iron, copper, lead, zinc and precious metal) can benefit from the experience of the others at points where they have problems in common.. It is realized fully that each of these branches of mining possesses its own peculiar problems, but at the same time, there are prob-lems in connection with each, where the experience in others should be of value. The committee proposes to proceed along the following lines: 1. To present a general classification of mining methods, showing their inter-relationship, and at the same time .provide a common language for the discussion of mining methods and a nomenclature that will have the same meaning wherever used. A com-plete set of illustrations will accompany the classi-fication to make clear the terminology adopted and to show graphically the inter-relationship of methods. 2. To show the relationship between the physical characteristic of the deposit, the economic consider-ations and the. mining method., It is not proposed to treat this subject as a mere academic problem, but to secure reports from every mining company of impor-tance in this country, which will show what methods or modifications and combinations of methods have actually been applied and the physical conditions and economic considerations which have led to the adoption of these methods in each case. The Mining Methods Committee has drawn up an Outline for Papers on Mining Methods to be distributed among mining engineers and operators, giving in detail the information desired. This outline is the result of several months of careful thought and is a composite of the suggestions of many engineers and mining company officials from all parts of the United States.

IN the winter of 1902, while occupying the position of mining and examining engineer for the Mountain Copper Co., Ltd., of Keswick, Cal., I had occasion to discuss with the General Manager, among other things, the question of the enormous waste of sulphur in smelting cupriferous, pyrite ore, and to cast about for means to utilize this waste or to render the fumes innocuous to vegetation. The decreasing rate of production of California farms, the consequent need of fertilizers, and the opportunity thus offered to utilize large quantities of sulphuric acid in the manufacture of superphosphates naturally brought the subject to the practical and commercial side of phosphates. I was informed that the company had made efforts to find phosphates in the West, without success. I advised as a start placing inquiries for phosphate deposits on the Pacific coast in the current mining ,journals. This was done, with the result that in January, 1903, from an advertisement in the Mining and Scientific Press we got track of a deposit in Rich county, Utah, through T.J . Wilson, of the Southern Pacific railroad in San Francisco. As soon as snow in the mountains would permit, in May, 1903, I undertook an examination of the property, with the result of recognizing the importance of the find, in spite of its lack of facilities for transportation at a commercial figure. On June 15, 1903, I concluded my report by saying, "This may be one of the world's deposits of phosphates." On Nov. 17, 1903, I concluded my report for the season in the following words : " I have now no hesitation in saying that I believe the Carboniferous formation so largely developed in the Wasatch mountains of Utah and the mountains of the Great Basin will prove to be one of the greatest storehouses of phosphoric acid in the world."

In experiments for the production of steel the principal problem has always been the introduction into, or removal from, the iron of a definite quantity of carbon. Although the solution of this problem had engaged a more or less blindly and empirically directed effort for a long time, it was only with the development of analytical chemistry that the rôle which carbon plays in the constitution of steel was disclosed in its full significance, and that many of the problems confronting the steel-maker were thereby more clearly defined than before. For a long time, and to a certain extent even to this day, the percentage of carbon in steel has been the controlling means of deter mining its quality and hardness. In many cases the percentage of carbon alone has been relied on for judging large consignments, such as the large deliveries of wire-billets and blooms to America during the past twenty years; and though to-day the influences of the other constituents are recognized and many other considerations are taken into account, and though, moreover, some special steels, such as the Hadfield manganese steel, apparently dispense to a certain extent with the assistance of the carbon, yet fix our Bessemer, Thomas, Siemens and crucible steel the carbon still remains one of the most important constituents, and I venture to say it is indispensable. In order to produce in the Bessemer converter a steel of a certain required percentage of carbon, two methods, as is well known, present themselves. By the one the decarburization process is stopped when the desired carbon limit in the bath has been reached ; by the other the bath is completely decarburizecl, and then a calculated amount of carbon added in the form of spiegel, ferro manganese, etc. In Germany the latter method only was adopted, and it was retained when the Thomas-Gilchrist process for the production of low-Phosphorus steel from high-phosphorus iron eame into use, since from the nature of the new process complete decarburization is neces-

THE COMMITTEE on Correlation of Research held two meetings in 1931. The first was a luncheon meeting on Feb. 19, at the Engineers Club, New York, attended by eight members and four guests-William H. Bassett, past-president of the Institute; Robert E. Tally, president; H. Foster Bain, secretary; and Alfred D. Flinn, director of the Engineering Foundation. Mr. Bassett gave a short resume of the circumstances leading to the formation of the Committee and expressed his opinion that the objectives as expressed by the Committee in its first annual report were in accordance with the ideas of the Institute officials. Mr. Tally stressed the great importance of research in the mining and metallurgical industries and stated that lie believed the Institute should encourage and promote research, and that this Committee could do a great deal to foster such work in the Institute. Mr. Bain pointed out that this Committee was appointed with a view to correlating and fostering research work. in the field of the Institute's activities. This could be done in various ways, as by encouraging the divisions and committees of the Institute to hold group meetings on research, by forming research subcommittees in the Institute divisions, and by bringing together research interest in. certain projects and the fund or organization that is equipped to carry out the project.

Earlier work1-4 has shown that commercial mild steels under static loading at the lowest natural operating temperatures fracture in a brittle manner only when damaged by a suitable history of straining. Notched and then compressed plates have fractured in subsequent tension at loads as low as 10 pct of the limit load and precompressed smooth bars at a subsequent extensional strain as low as 0.01. The comparison of the average net fracture stress with the flow limit stress was shown to be an excellent criterion of brittle or ductile behavior of mild steel structures when only loads and general stress levels are known. The present investigation shows that the deformation at fracture is a far more sensitive measure of brittleness than the fracture stress. Both criteria, deformation and stress, are used to determine the amount of uniform precompression of two mild steels, ABS-B and Project E-steel, resulting in brittle fracture under the strong constraint of a subsequently machined severe circumferential groove. The fracture stress equaled or exceeded the theoretical flow limit Ól = 2.680., ('based on the elevated yield stress at each prestrain) up to prestrains of about 0.20 and then fell off to about 1 at prestrains of 0.60. Yet a prestrain of only 0.05 reduced the elongation at the shoulders by a factor of about 4. The total plastic elongation of a region surrounding a sharp notch in prestrained steel deternines whether or not fracture will be initiated in large structures, hence is a direct and realistic measure of the remaining ductility and provides an excellent test of the material's resistance to embrittlement. ALMOST all engineering structures of mild steel which failed in service in a so-called "brittle" manner exhibited appreciable local plastic deformation (more than 1 pct) and a mixture of "cleavage" and "shear" fracture surfaces. Furthermore, the peak local stress in an advancing crack is always high. Such simple criteria as pure cleavage, absence of plasticity, or fracture stress, so useful in other fields, are insufficient to characterize brittleness in engineering structures at ordnary temperatures. The "brittle)' behavior of engineering structures is caused by the limited ductility at cracks or notch regions, as shown by recent work at Brown University summarized and extended in Refs. 1 to 4. It was also shown that the local ductility of mild steel may be catastrophically reduced by a suitable strain and temperature history similar to those which may occur in real structures. Localized yielding begins at the notch roots at low loads but is contained by surrounding elastic regions. The plastic strains are hence small. They increase slowly with the load up to the flow limit or limit load for an ideally plastic material. Unrestricted plastic flow then occurs. At such strains the real material locally st rain-hardens and fractures. With work-hardening materials no flow limit exists, and the transition from low to high plastic strains is gradual but increases more rapidly at loads close to the flow limit of an equivalent perfectly plastic material. When the available ductility is sufficient for reaching the limit load, the behavior is normal or "ductile". With insufficient ductility, fracture will occur at a low load and will be defined as "brittle". Accordingly the sufficiency or not of the ductility at a notch is reflected in the magnitude of the fracture load or average net stress as compared with the limit load or flow limit. The application of this criterion gave surprising results. Service failures under semistatic loading occurred mostly below the limit load, hence were "brittle". On the contrary all static tests with undamaged commercial mild steels reached the limit load in spite of the deepest notches and temperatures below Charpy impact transition (say about -30°F or higher). Notched bars showed no brittleness even under fully dynamic axial loading up to 1.5 x107 psi per sec at -23°F and about 2.5 x l06 psi per sec at -ll0°F, but broke in a brittle manner at -200°F and l03 psi per sec.' To propagate a fracture at low load, experimenters had to trigger it by superimposing a strong dynamic impact at a notch cooled by liquid nitrogen as in the Robertson5 or Esso tests.' Once started the cracks would run through warmer regions of smaller stress. Obviously the ductility of the apparently undamaged commercial steels was "sufficient" in the laboratory tests but not in the service fracture, where it must have been reduced by some embrittling procedure of fabrication or service. These conclusions were confirmed by the achievement of low static stress (brittle) fracture initiation in unwelded steel after a local reduction of ductility by simple prestraining. Symmetrically notched plates of undamaged mild steel cooled below the Charpy V-notch transition range were tested in central static tension: Undamaged plates withstood loads of limit intensity, but when subjected to prior in-plane com-pressive prestraining perpendicular to the notch axis and to accelerated aging, the plates fractured completely or partially at very low static loads, as low as one-tenth of the flow limit.2-4 However, damage could not be easily related to the strongly variable prestrain around a sharp notch. KIRKLAND LAKE and Porcupine in 1931 accounted for more than $41,625,000 of Ontario's total gold production of $43,117,688. For the first time, the younger camp surpassed the older in gold output, producing $21,734,000 against $19,891,000 for Porcupine. Present output of both camps is increasing, and should pass the record figures of 1931 before the year is out. In May of this year, Porcupine mines milled 285,759 tons, with a bullion value of $1,810,009; the corresponding figures for Kirkland mines are 149,188 tons and $2,104,757. A much higher average value per ton for Kirkland ore, $14.10 against $6.33 average for Porcupine accounts for the difference. The two fields are about 100 miles apart by rail, and there are important differences in the character of the ores, which accounts largely for the difference in milling costs and in final tailing values, despite excellent metallurgical work in both the fields.
