THE past twenty-five years has been a period of unparalleled improvement in all lines of mining and metallurgical equipment, but probably none has undergone greater refinement and development than the vacuum filter. Beginning a quarter of a century ago, there has been steady advancement in the art of vacu-um filtration until today its use has become virtually standard practice for dewatering throughout the entire metallurgical industry as well as in important parts of the chemical and industrial processing fields. The credit for the first successful application of vacuum filtration 'at the Consolidated Mercury mines in Utah in 1902 undoubtedly belongs to George Moore. There, it is said, his filter reduced the loss of gold in the slime and sand from $1.25 to 40c. per ton. Successful applications were subsequently made by Mr. Moore at the Liberty Bell mines, Telluride, Colo., the Lundberg, Dorr &Wilson mill at Terry, S. D., and elsewhere. E. L. Oliver is generally credited with, having done the most to work out the necessary continuity of op-eration exemplified in the well-known continuous vacu-um filter which bears his name. Others made improve-ments also, but in my opinion all the new ideas advanced in recent years are modifications of the fundamental principles originated by the two pioneers, Moore and Oliver. Considerable interest has been shown recently in the new type of continuous internal-type vacuum filter which is associated with my own name1. In response to frequent inquiries regarding it and the steps which led up to its invention, I am giving herewith a brief account of the early history of this development and some of the more important installations which have been made during the last year or so. A. M. Nicholas (now deceased), an Australian engi-neer, conceived the idea, several years ago, of manu-facturing a continuous vacuum filter with the filter medium applied upon the inside of the drum, as con-trasted with existing drum filters in which the medium is applied externally. Nicholas recognized that a ma-chine of this type would be simpler than one with a tank and would overcome some of the difficulties en-countered with tank filters on certain classes of pulps, and he appreciated the value of having filtration take place in the same direction as the gravitational settle-ment of the solid particles in the pulp, the pulp being retained within the drum instead of being held against the outside surface. The ease of starting up after a shut down was likewise realized by Nicholas. It was tried in the United States, but was not entirely success-ful primarily due to mechanical defects.

INTRODUCTION In September 1974 the Resource Appraisal Group of the Branch of Oil and Gas Resources, U. S. Geological Survey, was asked to aid the Federal Energy Administration (FEA) in its legal responsibility to generate by June 1975 an independent appraisal of the undiscovered oil and gas resources of the United States, both onshore and offshore. As a result, the Resource Appraisal Group accelerated its ongoing efforts to develop sound appraisal methods and procedures that would permit the systematic collection and evaluation of basic data from petroleum provinces throughout the Nation. The results of this independent appraisal of the Nation's conventional oil and natural gas resources were published by the U. S. Geological Survey as Circular 725, June 1975 (1). The estimates in this report of undiscovered recoverable oil and gas resources for the United States were made: (1) by carefully re- viewing a large amount of geological and geophysical information gathered on more than 100 different provinces by over 70 geologists within the Survey; (2) by applying a variety of resource appraisal techniques to each potential petroleum province; and (3) by application of subjective probability procedures to group appraisals for each petroleum province. These methods provide a range of estimates which are summarized in terms of low, high and mean values for the various provinces and groups of provinces, or regions. The basic data and procedures used are documented and are being incorporated into a dynamic, data- intensive system that can be upgraded, updated and reevaluated periodically. These data are open to public inspection. In this study, the primary emphasis was placed on conventional crude oil and natural gas in the onshore provinces and the provinces on the continental shelf out to water depths of 200 metres; estimates

A number of experimental rnethods—X-ray powder diffractometry, Laue photography, X-ray small-angle scattering, and transmission electron microscopy and dijfraction—have been utilized to examine the morphology associated with precipitation from the terminal, g, solid solution of a Zn-1 pct Cu alloy. A significant age hardening was observed in a 1 pct Cu alloy. X-ray and electron diffraction results showed that the structural inhomogeneities associated with the hardening were isotructural with the matrix. The average size and shape of the inhomogeneities were deduced from the electron microscopy and X-ray small-angle scattering. The preprecipitates are hexagonal platelets some 300? in diam. and some twelve unit cells thick. The orientation of the platelets was deduced from Laue photographs and electron diffraction. The platelet plane is (0001). When a large amount of pre-precipitation is present in a localized volume the new lattice is often disoriented by a rotation about (0001) of of the matrix. WhILE dilute Zn-Cu alloys have been commercially important for some 50 years, relatively very little is known metallographically about this material. The "Zilloys", zinc with about 1 wt pct Cu and sometimes a small addition of magnesium, are used to produce rolled zinc which is harder and stronger than that produced by other rollable zinc alloys.' According to the phase diagrams of the zinc-rich side of the Cu-Zn system, such dilute Zn-Cu alloys should age-harden;2-5 the solubility of copper in zinc, g-phase, at 424°C is 2.68 pct, while at 0°C it is only to 0.3 pct. However, the published literature on the aging of this system appears to be limited to a documentation of the contraction of 1, 2, and 3 pct Cu alloys aging at 95°c,6 and an attempt to measure changes in lattice parameters during aging.' In the latter work, no lattice parameter changes were detected, although a broadening of the highest-angle lines was detected and considerable diffuse scattering was observed. Micro-structural investigations have been limited to the latest stage of aging, wherein Widmanstatten precipitates are formed.3,47 These alloys are of interest for still another reason. The two most zinc-rich phases in the Cu-Zn system, 77 and E, are both hcp. Moreover, the change in a, between 17 and t for a 1 wt pct Cu alloy is onlv 3.64 -,~ct: the change in Co is 12.0 ict. It would be anticipated that precipitation in such a material might occur through metastable phases or G.P. zones with epitaxy along mutual 0001 planes. The goals of the present work are aimed at partially filling the void of knowledge concerning the early stages of precipitation from the g phase. In particular, we have attempted to document the magnitude of the age hardening of this system and to determine the size, shape, and orientation within the matrix of the elements of precipitation in an early stage of condensation. EXPERIMENTAL A) Specimen Preparation. Specimens were prepared In two somewhat different ways, one method being used for X-ray Laue and diffractometer measurements, optical microscopy, and Rockwell hardness measurements and the other used for electron microscopy and X-ray small-angle scattering. In the first case zinc and copper in the proper proportions to yield a 1 wt pct Cu alloy were melted together in a closed graphite crucible. Castings so made were free of apparent segregation or oxidation. The castings were then solution-annealed at 400°C for several days and then quenched in water to room temperature. Filings of portions of the specimens were made for use as X-ray powder diffractometry specimens. The electron microscope material was made as follows. Castings were made under vacuum with copper powder placed inside a hollow zinc cylinder to insure good contact of the materials. These 1 wt pct Cu pieces were then rolled to 0.1 mm with an intermediate anneal in vacuo. The rolled sheets so formed were then annealed for about 6 hr at 225°C. Finally the specimens were electropolished slowly until thin enough for transmission electron microscopy. The polishing is discussed in greater detail in the Results section. B) Measurements. X-ray measurements of three types were performed. A G.E. XRD-5 diffractometer was used to examine powders of the alloy for identification of second-phase material. A Kratky small-angle camera, also operating from a G.E. tube, was used to investigate the sizes of small precipitate particles. In both cases, nickel-filtered copper radiation was utilized. Finally, individual grains of the large-grained castings were examined in the back-reflection Laue geometry. Electron microscope studies were carried out with a J.E.O.L. Model 6A instrument. RESULTS A) Hardness Measurements. Hardness measurements performed at room temperature on the large-grained polycrystalline specimens showed a hardening which was essentially complete in 3 hr. Fig. 1 shows a typical plot of hardness vs aging time. The relative magnitude of the ultimate hardening varied from run to run between 150 and 200 pct of the value for the material immediately after quenching from the solution anneal. Most probably the variations reflect small changes in the time taken to remove the specimen from the vacuum furnace after the solution anneal.

As the complexity of hydrometallurgical systems increases, it offers new opportunity for applications of solvent extraction. However, the high capital cost of mixer-settlers for large flow rates is a drawback to wide application in base metal recovery. This paper presents information on the use of cyclone separators in place of settlers with attendant significant reduction in capital cost. Various flowsheet possibilities for this development are discussed.

In the winter of 1902, while occupying the position of mining and examining engineer for the Mountain Copper Co., Ltd., of Keswick, Cal., I had .occasion to discuss with the General Manager, among other things, the question of the enormous waste of sulphur in smelting cupriferous pyrite ore, and to cast about for means to utilize this waste or to render the fumes innocuous to vegetation. The decreasing rate of production of California farms, the consequent need of fertilizers, and the opportunity thus offered to utilize large quantities of sulphuric acid in the manufacture of superphosphates naturally brought the subject to the practical and commercial side of phosphates. I was informed that the company had made efforts to find phosphates in the West, without success. I advised as a start placing inquiries for phosphate deposits on the Pacific coast in the current mining journals. This was done, with the result that in January, 1903, from an advertisement in the Mining and Scientific Press we got track of a deposit in Rich county, Utah, through T. J. Wilson, of the Southern Pacific railroad in San Francisco. As soon as snow in the mountains would permit, in May, 1903, I undertook an examination of the property, with the result of recognizing the importance of the find, in spite of its lack of facilities for transportation at a commercial figure. On June 15, 1903, I concluded my report by saying, "This may be one of the world's deposits of phosphates." On Nov. 17, 1903, I concluded my report for the season in the following words : " I have now no hesitation in saying that I believe the Carboniferous formation so largely developed in the Wasatch mountains of Utah and the mountains of the Great Basin will prove to be one of the greatest storehouses of phosphoric acid in the world." Freeport Indonesia, Incorporated produces 180,000 tons per year (200,000 STPY) of 32% copper concentrate. A 111 kilometer (69 mile) pipeline transports the concentrate slurry to the sea coast. Rheology characteristics of the concentrate slurry must be monitored continuously to assure that the pipeline does not plug and that mini- mum degradation of the pipeline occurs. Factors affecting the rheobgy include particle size, percent solids, pH, and reagent additions. This paper includes a general pipeline description, slurry rheology factors affecting operations, and the problems encountered and their subsequent resolution. Six years successful operation of the worlds longest copper concentrate slurry pipeline has provided a unique insight into slurry behavior.

INTRODUCTION THE present war in Europe seems to have stimulated the demand for quicksilver. In July last, the price ranged around $35 per flask of 75 lb., while to-day it seems to fluctuate between $47.50 and $50. The use of quicksilver in the form of fulminate, containing 70 per cent., and as corrosive sublimate, containing 73.8 per cent., must be extensive and a further market advance may be expected. With such an advance, some revival in quicksilver mining maybe looked for, particularly in California, where many abandoned properties exist. What can be done with low-grade quicksilver ores under favorable conditions, particularly with low mining cost, may be seen from the following description of the Oceanic mine, near. San Luis Obispo, Cal. Its operations date back to 1876, when rich sand ores were discovered. In three years 7,400 flasks of quick-silver were produced, but since then the deposit has been only sporadically worked. Until two years ago various attempts had been made by the Oceanic Quicksilver Co. to mine the more refractory "mud rock," which was encountered lying beyond the "sand rock." Mud and sand rock in varying quantities were treated together with poor results, but operations were successful with sand rock of fair percentage. About two years ago,, when all the sand rock had been exhausted, Murray Innes purchased the Oceanic mine. He found large quantities of low-grade mud rock, varying from 6 to 8 lb. of quicksilver per ton, which at the prevailing low price of quick-silver demanded very cheap mining costs, in conjunction with high but cheap metallurgical extraction. At that time the extraction of quicksilver from mud rock ranged between 40 and 50 per cent., as far as I am able to, learn.

The fatigue behauior of irradiated copper single crystals is compared to that of unirradiated crystals. Proton or electron irradiation did not substantially change the fatigue-lzj.e, fatigue-hardening-, or slip-line characteristics, while neutron irradiation did appear to alter these parameters. Postfatigue transrrzission electron microscopy did not reveal any marked structural differazces between irradiated and unirradiated specimens. Possible dislocatio~a mechanisnzs to explain the observed behavior are discussed. A LTHOUGH considerable work has been done to ascertain the effects of radiation on the tensile properties of metals (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2), little work of a basic nature has been reported on the effect of radiation on fatigue properties. Since it is known that fatigue properties are sensitive to conditions at the surface of the metal, it was felt that charged particle irradiation, whose penetration into metals is very small, might influence the fatigue behavior. To investigate this surface effect, irradiations with 10 mev protons and 1.5 mev electrons were conducted. The range of 10 mev protons in copper is about 0.236 mm; which is very small compared with the thickness of the specimens used (1.53 mm). The range of 1.5 mev electrons is somewhat larger, on the order of 0.665 mm.4 On the other hand, irradiation with reactor neutrons produces damage throughout the entire specimen, so neutron irradiation can be used to study the effects of bulk damage. The damage introduced by proton and neutron irradiation is expected to con!ist of large interstitial dislocation loops,5 tiny (<25A) vacancy loops," and/or various vacancy-rich regions called depleted zones.&apos; In the case of electron irradiation at about -173°C the damage is expected to consist of isolated Frenkel pairs.&apos; The effect of radiation damage on the fatigue properties of some engineering materials has been reported,g,10 but the results are not clear-cut or consistent. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Zone-refined copper was used to grow single crystals by a modified Bridgeman technique in an inert helium atmosphere. Using a seeding method, single crystals were obtained as bars about 6 in. long with a cross section of 3 by $ in. Immediately upon removal from the split-mold graphite boat in which they were grown, the very soft bars were embedded in a room-temperature setting plastic. They could then be cut into specimen lengths without introducing any long-range damage. Generally, four or five specimens plus one seed were obtained from each bar. The plastic material was dissolved away in acetone and the orientation of each sample was checked by the standard Laue X-ray

OXYGEN has frequently been considered responsible for phenomena in the metallurgy of cast iron which are not sufficiently explained by the presence of other elements. Oxygen and oxides have been regarded as critical factors, particularly for the solidification process, and specifically in the formation of graphite. However, the evidence for an influence of oxygen has mostly only been indirect or qualitative. Furthermore, quantitative data on the oxygen content of cast iron presented in the literature have often been less conclusive as being apparently determined with insufficient regard for the difficulties associated with the sampling and analysis. These problems, experimental and theoretical, have been studied in this investigation. An attempt is made to bring the views on the soluble amount of oxygen in cast iron on a level with the present understanding of the thermodynamics of these types of alloys. Although there are no experimental data on the complete multicomponent cast-iron alloys some conclusions have been drawn from investigations on simpler systems. The order of magnitude of the solubility of oxygen in cast iron is considered in the first part of the paper. The second part deals with the oxygen content actually present under practical conditions. First the possible sources of errors in sampling and analyzing methods are examined. Finally some observations on the oxygen and oxide content of malleable iron during the production process are made. THERMODYNAMICS OF OXYGEN SOLUBILITY When cast iron is saturated with oxygen the saturation phase is essentially carbon monoxide or silicon dioxide depending upon the composition of the iron, the temperature, and the rates of formation of the oxides.* The latter occurs accordiw to the O + C = CO, Kc0 - a COa J 20 + Si = SiO2, Activities are used here instead of weight pct concentrations, since activities are believed to show more sensitively the effects of the interaction of all the alloying elements. Calculations involving activities are, however, seriously hampered by lack of experimental data on the interactions between the components encountered in the multi component cast-iron system Fe-O-C-Si-Mn-P-S- and so on. Late in 1944 a group of petroleum and coal technologists was organized in Washington under the sponsorship of the Petroleum Administration for War and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This group, known as the Technical Oil Mission, was placed under the authority of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which was then promoting the organization of other missions to be sent to Germany to obtain technical information regarding various industries in that country. The objective of the Tehnical oil Mission was to obtain technical data on German production of synthetic oil from coal and all other commercial practices and research projects connected with the oil industry. The primary purpose was to obtain such data as were immediately essential to assist the war against Germany and Japan, with secondary emphasis on technical information that would assist American industry after the end of the war. since oil-production facilities in Germany and the occupied countries controlled by Germany were the top targets for strategic bombing, the Technical Oil Mission was the first group under the Technical Induslrial Intelligence Com,mittee to enter Germany. A few members of the group flew to London in February 1945 and the majority of the remainder followed in March. In London they were joined by an equal number of British investigators and the combined mission was then sent into Germany under the authority of the Combined Intelligence Objectives Subcommittee (CIOS). A summary of the more important information gained by this combined British and American mission is presented below. German Oil Production The oil available to Germany, both natural and synthetic, and including production from occupied countries, reached a peak in late 1943 and early 1944 Production at this time was at the rate of 1,200,000 metric tons Per month, equivalent to 100,000,000 bbl. per year, or about 7 per cent of the wartime production in the United States. Of this production, jo per cent was crude oil from Romania and Hungary, 12 Per cent was crude oil from Germany itself, including Austria, 9 per cent cumprised coal-carbonization products, that is, tar and light oil, and only the remaining 29 per cent was synthetic liquid fuel made from coal or tar. Synthetic liquid fuel made in Germany was equivalent therefore to less than 2 per cent of wartime production of crude oil in the United States. The success of the strategic bombing campaign against German oil-production facilities is demonstrated by the fact that by September 1944 the Ploesti fields of Romania and much of the syrlthetic oil production had been eliminated, so that the amount of oil available to the German war machine was only 25 per Cent of the peak qualltity mentioned above. FOR the use of workmen and employees, the company should establish a dispensary and a -hospital where workmen who suffer accidents or professional diseases may be taken care of; and at suitable places in the mine or metallurgical plant it should install first-aid stations. Workmen have a right to receive 75 per cent of their wages while they are unable to perform their work as result of a professional disease; but some companies pay full wages and in the case of natural disease, with the exception of venereal, alcoholism, injuries from fights, and chronic illnesses, 50 per cent of their wages up to a period of two months. The number of diseases the Law considers as professional is large and increases almost daily. Among the professional diseases, the one which has caused greatest harm to the miners and expense to the companies is silicosis. To avoid its propagation, companies should take every possible precaution that the working atmosphere is free from dust, abating this by frequent sprinkling of the workings using, wet drills and furnishing the workmen adequate protective apparatus such as respirators.

THE world was not quite ready for Hal Marsh when he emerged from the California Institute of Technology in 1922 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, so, finding no promising job, he went back on a fellowship for another year. He wound up his responsibilities to it on a Saturday in June, 1923, went to work for the General Petroleum Corp. of California the next Monday morning, and has been there ever since. His present position is that of "production engineer." As such, his duties are miscellaneous and vague, but may mostly be described as investigation of equipment and methods pertaining to drilling and the production of oil, with occasionally a bit of design. THIS paper will attempt to show how a metallurgical problem at one California quicksilver mine was solved, and how the solution was applied successfully at another mine. The pronouns "we" and "our," as used below, refer to the Bradley Mining Co. of San Francisco. The term "concurrent firing" for the purpose of this paper can be defined as feeding and firing a rotary kiln at the same end-that is, of course, the upper end. This is as opposed to "counter-current firing," the orthodox method, in which a kiln is fed at the upper and fired at the lower end. The terms "quicksilver" and "mercury" are used interchangeably. EARLY REFERENCES The earliest work on nonferrous metallurgy, we believe, was The Pirotechnia of Vannocio Biringuccio,1 its first edition having been printed in Italy in 1540. Quoting from its chapter entitled "Concerning Quicksilver and Its Ore": Quicksilver . . . is one of the gods and has divine strength in itself, and also, to the annoyance of the alchemists, it is winged. Hence, when it sees that it is in gravest danger, it loosens itself from . . . every bond . . . and flies away into the heavens, escaping from the hands of those who crucify it. Almost laughing, it leaves all its adversaries mocked and scorned, with their phials and filters empty . . . How thorough a job, under certain conditions, it can do of mocking its adversaries and leaving their phials and filters empty, was found out four centuries later at the Sulphur Bank mine, on the east shore of Clear Lake, in Lake County, California. The other mine mentioned in the title is the Reed, in Yolo County, California, 35 miles by road southeast of Sulphur Bank. Reed and Sulphur Bank ranked respectively fifth and seventh in U. S. production in 1943. The earliest direct reference we can find to furnacing troubles at these mines was by Thomas Egleston in 1890.2 Speaking of Sulphur Bank, Egleston says: Sometimes there is more sulphur than cinnabar in the ore, which is a detriment to both . . . making the sulphur impure, and rendering the cinnabar difficult to work on account of the soot. In some of the early . . . furnaces the accumulation of soot from the excess of sulphur has been known to penetrate as far as the fan blower at the end of the . . . condensers, and completely prevent its revolution. In order to get rid of the inconvenience of this accumulation . . . , as well as to get a commercial value from the sulphur, it (the sulphur) is now separated by steam and sold. It is claimed that the sulphur alone pays all the expenses of . . . the mine. The mine was first worked for sulphur, and the cinnabar it contained was considered to be an inconvenience, and was carefully picked out and thrown away. as its richness and value were not

The term. "high-yield-strength," used in the title of Dr. Gillett&apos;s paper (p. 40) is obviously relative. His discussion is limited to improved steels intended to compete with the low-cost, low-carbon, hot-rolled, sheet and plate steels of commerce made and used on a tonnage basis, without heat-treatment. In his list of about three dozen steels, only three have a yield strength of 70,000 lb. per sq. in., or over. Double such values are not uncommon in aircraft steels. Dr. Jeffries (p. 21) refers to "light-weight metals," obviously meaning strong alloys of low specific gravity; namely, aluminum alloys of the duralumin type and certain magnesium alloys. In a structural material, "lightness" is determined by two factors, strength and specific gravity. They must always be considered jointly. The basis of comparison is a strength-weight ratio, obtained by dividing the desired strength value, such as tensile strength, yield strength, or endurance limit, by weight per unit of volume, such as specific gravity or pounds per cubic inch1. For example, aluminum is a heavy metal, structurally, unless alloyed and heat-treated to give it high strength. When the strength of a structural metal is raised by heat-treatment or by cold-work, its specific gravity is not appreciably changed, but it is made lighter in direct proportion to the increase in strength because less of it will be required to carry the load. The lightness of the finished structure of adequate strength is the real point of interest. This structure must not only carry designed load, but "stand the gaff" of service, which includes the effects of accidental overload, fatigue, corrosion, loosening of joints, and so forth. Neither Dr. Gillett nor Dr. Jeffries mentions the true "lightest material of construction," which is alloy steel, tubular in form (Fig. 1), assembled by welding and heat-treated to a yield strength in excess of 150,000 lb. per sq. inch.

IT is customary to ascribe two general modes of occurrence to natural gas, namely shale. gas which, as the name indicates, is found in&apos; shale, and reservoir gas, which occurs ill sandstone, conglomerate and dolomitic limestone. Both of these types are found in the Cleveland district. The shale gas has been produced on a small scale for a long period of years, probably dating back as far as 1883. Shale gas is a low-pressure gas, small in volume with variable pressure, and is limited to no definite horizon. It is generally independent of oil, may last for a long time, and is not dependent to any great extent on the structure of the rocks. There are many such wells in the district which range from 400 to 1,840 ft. in depth, although most have been completed at about 800 ft. This indicates that the wells pass through the Cleveland and Chagrin shales into the Huron or Portage shale of the Upper Devonian. During the last 2 years great interest has developed in a deeper-seated reservoir gas. What is commonly called reservoir gas is generally a high-pressure gas occurring in large volume at a definite horizon. Oil may, or may not, be associated with the gas, and in most regions in which reservoir gas is found, the geological structure is of great importance. This type of gas occurs in all large fields such as those of West Virginia which have been supplying Cleveland until the recent discovery of local gas at great depths in commercial amounts.

THE mines of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation are at Kimberly, in the Robinson mining district, White Pine County, Nevada. [ ] The blanket-like ore body is a disseminated copper deposit occurring in monzonite porphyry and, in general, is thoroughly fractured, altered, and soft. Contained in the porphyry ores of the extreme westerly end of the ore body are pendants of hard garnetized limestone. A younger monzonite porphyry underlies the ore-bearing porphyry, which in turn rests on limestone and shale. Block caving is the standard method of mining. Because of the undulating top and bottom contours of the ore body, the main haulage level was selected and driven at an elevation calculated to be the most economic depth below the major tonnage sections of ore. Fig. I shows a general section of the Emma Nevada ore body taken through its long axis, which lies roughly in an east-west direction. Mine openings in either type of porphyry require heavy timbering and constant maintenance and repair, particularly in horizons at or near the ore body contact. Where the ore lies close to the haulage level, slusher hoists and scrapers are used to transport horizontally the ore to the main haulage drift (Fig. 2). For the extraction of high-lying ores, a system of branch raises is used; and the ore is mined by gravity. Slushing methods are used also on the high-lying ore-body fringes. Slusher drifts are often driven from the fringe branch raises that have already served their purpose, in order to minimize the cost of the preparatory work in mining the thinner portions of the ore body (Figs. 3 and 4). When a block of ore is developed and undercut, it is economical to mine it as rapidly as the ore will cave efficiently; and this procedure often presents safety problems because of men with equipment working in a relatively congested area. The single-track main haulage drift is about 1 ½ miles long, and lateral haulage drifts are driven under the ore body at intervals determined by the height of the ore body above the haulage level.
