NOW continuing with the preparation of the moulds I say that it is necessary to give the greatest attention to the differences of the clays as well as to the differences of those things that you wish to mould; and to know that every concavity in the mould produces a convexity and every convexity a hollow following the shape of the original pattern that you have. The pattern should be a body of a harder mated than the thing [78] you wish to mould with and of a substance that is not swollen or disintegrated by moisture. Its archetype may be of marble, bronze, lead, or any other metal, or also of wood, wax, tallow, gypsum, sulphur, or other plaster compositions-in short, of whatever you may have or whatever succeeds best for you, depending on whether the works are large or small and easy or &cult to mould. If you wish to cast them in bronze, you must mould them with loam, covering them with it and then drying it. There are some things in which it is enough to form only one part, such as half- or bas-reliefs. These are easy if they have no undercuts. Some other patterns that are easily handled are formed in two halves, or in three or four pieces, if they are of a hard material. There are also moulds for large statues, which, if one desires to make them of bronze, are first made of wax according to the ordinary procedure. I have in mind to describe every one of these processes in their own place. There are like- wise some moulds that are difficult to make, like scenes on a plane to which figures in full relief are attached, or twisted ornaments or other detached things that cannot be withdrawn from the mould without break-

Adsorption isotherms for dodecyl sulfonate on alumina were determined at 45°C and 25°C and the data was used for calculating the partial molar heat and entropy of adsorbed ions under various concentrations. Changes in OH and AS observed at certain concentrations agree with the postulate of interaction of surfactant ions to form two-dimensional aggregates at the solid-liquid interface. Values of the total OH and AS for the aggregation process calculated using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation is used to interpret the interactions of surfactant ions with each other as well as with the solvent molecules.

Sputtered aluminum thin films were prepared in each of two conventional bell-jar vacuum systems. One system utilized an inner "getter sputtering" enclosure; the second system was a standard diode sputterirlg arrangement. Consistent and repeatable film properties were obtained in both systems provided sufficient cleanup and presputter time was allowed. The various problems associated with aluminum sputtering are discussed, with pavticular attention to the vzinimization of film contamination by outgassing and oxidation. The growth and structure of the aluminum thin films were studied with the aid of electron wzicroscopy and related to deposition rate, substrate temperature, and film thickness. The resistivity of the films was correlated to film structure and surface roughness. Resistiuities as low as 3.5 microhm-cm (2.3 x bulk resistiuity) were measured for relatively thick films (20,000). THIS investigation was undertaken to explore the problems and film characteristics associated with the sputtering of aluminum. Earlier work reported on aluminum sputtering has stressed the contamination of both the cathode and film as well as abnormally low deposition rates.' Data on sputtering yields,3 however, indicate that aluminum sputtering could be practical. Recently, it was shown by Theuerer and Hauser3 that aluminum sputtering was feasible in a conventional oil-diffusion pumped vacuum system provided an inner "getter sputtering" enclosure was employed to minimize gaseous contamination. This technique employs the getter action of aluminum to produce extremely low reactive gas partial pressures in the deposition zone. Aluminum films have already found use in solid-state electronic devices such as transistors and integrated microcircuits. To the present time, most aluminum films have been prepared by evaporation due to the ease with which this metal can be evaporated. Controlled sputtering of aluminum offers a number of advantages over evaporation, however, such as 1) manufacturing compatibility with other metals which must be sputtered, 2) better control of process variables resulting in more repeatable and uniform films, 3) generally better adhesion resulting from higher-energy metal atoms, 4) built-in material supply for continuous operation, and 5) the ability to deposit alloys. The data presented in this paper are the result of two separate studies. One study utilized a small "getter sputtering" enclosure (System A) and was concerned with the structure and properties of thin aluminum films up to about 1600A thick. In this thickness range, study of the film structure was possible with transmission electron microscopy. The second study was conducted with a conventional diode sputtering apparatus (System B) and covered $ much wider range of film thickness up to about 34,000A. Emphasis was placed on developing techniques which would extend aluminum sputtering to an existing in-line continuous deposition process.4 I) EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE System A. Fig. 1 shows a schematic of the "getter sputtering" inner chamber used and Fig. 2 is a photograph of this chamber mounted on an 18-in. access ring of a standard liquid-nitrogen trapped bell-jar vacuum system. This chamber was designed after a similar system used by Theuerer and auser.3 The configuration allowed the glow to emanate in all directions from the cathode. Argon (99.99') was allowed to enter only at the top of the chamber such that most of the reactive gases entering with the argon were reacted with the aluminum vapor and deposited on the chilled walls of the chamber before reaching the deposition zone. Provision was also made as shown, Fig. 1, for heating and cooling the substrate from about 20" to 400°C. Laboratory investigations have been made to study the effect of variations in fluid characteristics, gas saturation, water saturation, and water injection rate on oil recovery by water flooding. Three synthetic gas-saturated crude oils having bubble points of 860, 1,540 and 1,885 psi were used as reservoir fluids. Repeated tests were made in which a and pack, saturated with water and synthetic oil, was produced by solution gas drive followed by water flooding at various pressure levels. Oil recovery by solution gas drive and subsequent water injection is shown to vary with the pressure and rate at which the water flood is conducted. The pressure at which optimum flooding conditions exist is shown to be a functiotl of the physical characteristics of the reservoir fluid. For the systems studied, increases in oil recoveries of near 10 per cent were obtained by flooding at the most desirable conditions. Va- riations in initial water saturations gave results similar to those in the literature. INTRODUCTION Most of the waterflooding studies investigating means of improving present exploitation processes have been conducted at low pressures with little effort to simulate reservoir conditions. Holmgren and Morse' performed a waterflooding study at 300 to 500 psi wherein the gas saturation was created by injecting gas, letting dissolved gas evolve from the oil, and then flushing the core with "live" oil until the desired gas saturation was obtained. Their results show increasing oil recoveries with increasing gas saturations. Data presented by Guerrero' and Kennedy, et al, indicate that in some instances water flooding at approximately 500 psi below the original bubble point results in a lower residual oil saturation than is obtained when water flooding above the bubble point. In their work gas saturations were created by primary depletion. By correcting low pressure flooding data for fluid shrinkage, Dyes found that a maximum oil recovery may be obtained by flooding with initial gas saturations of from 7 to 12 per cent. The purpose of this work was to determine the variations in oil recovery caused by initiating a waterflooding program at various stages of primary depletion of a core. This is a part of a more comprehensive study of obtaining criteria for determining when to initiate a pressure maintenance program and what fluids to in-ject. Fox the past 20 years it has been generally accepted that the flotation process is made possible as a result of the action of certain chemical substances on the surface of the mineral particles. In fact, it has been suspected, but never demonstrated, that this action produces on the mineral particles a layer of chemosorbed ions that is of the order of magnitude of a monolayer; that is, of a layer one ion deep. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain initial results on the relationship of mineral surface area and collecting-agent requirements. Up to about eight years ago, all considerations involving the surface area of finely divided solids were-limited by the fact that there was not in existence any general method for determining the extent of such surfaces, especially on mixed materials. However, the method invented by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller1 has changed the situation by providing a general procedure (BET method). This procedure has already been applied to mineral dressing problems2 -4 and has now received confirmation as to accuracy by an entirely independent method.5 This confirmatory or "absolute" method uses a very tedious calorimetric procedure and is not suitable for routine determinations; but still another method6 now is available to relate the results obtained by the BET method to those obtained calorimetrically. This Harkins-Jura method has the advantage that it does not require an assumption concerning the parking area per molecule of adsorbate (nitrogen). In the original work by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller the parking area per nitrogen molecule was calculated to be either 13.8Å2. or 16.2Å2. according as the nitrogen was assumed to be closely packed as in crystalline nitrogen or loosely packed as in liquid nitrogen. The initial experimental work from this laboratory2 supported the 13.8Å2. figure; that work was done on glass spheres of measurable geometric area and it was based on the assumption that the glass spheres were truly smooth; any deviation from this assumption would, of course, have made the calculated parking area higher. Harkins and Jura's results suggest that the parking area is not the same for all substrata; furthermore, the average of the 87 measurements cited indicates a "preferred" parking area for the nitrogen molecule of about 15.2Å2., with extreme values at 13.7 and 16.9Å2. The average of 21 determinations made in connection with this study' gave a parking area of 14.3 ± 0.27Å2. In view of this result and of the Harkins and Jura

While engaged in experimenting with the usual methods for estimating phosphorus in iron and steel, it occurred to me that potassium chlorate might be used to oxidize the carbon, and thus avoid the tedious and vexatious evaporations necessary for successfully carrying out the usual methods. After many trials, the following plan was adopted : Take, for analysis, of Bessemer or other low-carbon steels, from 3 to 5 grammes; of crucible steel, 10 grammes; of pig-iron, 1 to 5 grammes, according to the percentage of phosphorus supposed to be present. Of iron, high in phosphorus (1 per cent.), take 1 gramme. Place in a No. 4 evaporating dish the amount of iron or steel decided upon, cover with a funnel which will just fit inside the dish, and then add gradually HNO3, (1.20 specific gravity), using 12 C.C. of acid for each gramme of steel or iron taken. (A larger quantity of acid will be required for small samples.) When the full amount of acid has been added, and the violent action has ceased, place the evaporating dish on a sand-bath, add 10 C.C. HNO3, (1.40 specific gravity), and boil till the bulk of the solution is reduced about onehalf. Then add 10 C.C. HNO3, (1.40 specific gravity), continue the boiling, and add from time to time, during the next 15 minutes, small portions of pulverized KCIO3, till about 2 grammes have been added. (If the solution shows signs of going dry, more strong acid must be added.) This will precipitate the manganese, with some iron. Sometimes it happens that the manganese does not come down readily, and more KCIO3, or further concentration, or both, will be required. The process is not complete till the manganese is precipitated, which may be known by the appearance of a dark, mirror-like deposit on the dish, at the edge of the solution. Boil the solution 5 minutes after the last addition of KCIO3, and then add cautiously (to prevent sudden explosions) 5 C.C. strong HCl. This will dissolve the precipitated manganese and iron. Various methods have been proposed in the literature to calculate the pressure losses in drill-pipe and bit-nozzles, i.e., those parts of the mud-circuit where the largest pressure-losses occur. Very few data, however, are available to check the validity of these proposals. Presented in this paper are the results of pumping experiments with clay-water drilling fluids of different specific gravities and different laminar flow-properties (differential viscosity and Bingham yield value), using pipes of different diameters. In addition, a series of measurements on bit-nozzles is discussed. Two main conclusions may be drawn from this work for the flow through pipes. 1. In the laminar flow region pressure losses can be calculated from the differential viscosity and Bingham yield value of the mud. 2. In the turbulent flow region pressure losses can be calculated with good approximation from a viscosity term which is determined by the volume fraction of the dispersed phase. Calculations making use of laminar flow properties may lead to erroneous results. The effect of temperature on the pressure losses in the case of turbulent flow can be calculated from the change in viscosity of the dispersing medium, i.e., water. The main conclusions determined for the flow through bit-nozzles are that for flow conditions prevailing in the field, the pressure-drops in bit-nozzles are independent of the laminar flow properties of the mud. They are solely determined by the density of the mud and the geometry of the nozzle. INTRODUCTION The last decades have witnessed a steady increase in the depth of oil wells. This is illustrated by the increase in the drilling depth record in the USA from 8,046 ft in 1927 to 21,482 ft in 1953. This increasing depth, together with the experience that high rates of mud circulation and high fluid velocities in the bit-nozzles enhance the rate of drilling, has emphasized the importance of selecting suitable mud-pumps when starting the drilling of a deep borehole. For such a selection it is necessary to be able to calculate the pumping pressures necessary to obtain the required circulation rates. The main part of the pressure-losses in the mud circuit occur in the drill pipe and the bit-nozzles. Various methods have been proposed in the literature to calculate the pressure-losses in the drill pipe1,2,3,4. These methods do not all lead to the same results, and at the time this investigation was started insufficient basic data were available to check their validity. Moreover, to our knowledge, no data are available at all on the effect, if any, of the flow-properties of the mud on the pressure-losses in bit-nozzles.

brittlement or notch sensitivity progressively increases. Further, in contrast to results obtained with the impact test, the notch strength for the large specimens does not reveal a 500°F embrittlement range. The notch sensitivity as determined with the 0.3-in. specimen of 4340 steel given the stepped austenitizing treatment has been discussed elsewhere. This quantity as measured for the 1.1-in.- diam notch tensile test and given in Fig. 3, is taken to signify that reduced notch sensitivity is encountered in the 600" to 800°F tempering range for specimens given the stepped austenitizing treatment. The stepped austenitizing treatment may, there- fore, be of use in promoting deeper hardenability for a 4340 steel while at the same time giving reduced notch sensitivity in the high-strength range in which this steel is now being used. WHEN I was honored by being invited to give the Howe Memorial Lecture, I decided to read Howe's book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," published in 1916-that is, about 25 years ago-in search of a text. I found the book written in fine, clear, attractive, yet precise style, as I expected, knowing that his father ¬Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, his mother-Julia Ward Howe, and all of his four brothers and sisters had lived in a New England literary atmosphere and had written books. This leads me to suggest that many authors of metallurgical papers and books could well study Howe's writings with a view to the improvement of their own. I failed to find a specific text, but did find a subject, for in reading his book I was struck by the few instances in which time is considered explicitly as a factor in the phenomena examined, and by the fact that many of the hottest arguments would have been settled had time been taken properly into account. Indeed, Howe hardly mentions time except in a rather incidental way, as in a few references to lag; for instance: The lowering of temperature at which the transformation occurs by rapid cooling . . . is a phenomenon of undercooling or lag. It is in part explained by the fact that the transformation itself is a time-consuming reaction which, setting in during a rapid fall of temperature. is naturally protracted till the temperature has sunk far below that at which it is due. He does discuss, quite fully, the iron-carbon equilibrium diagram, as known at that time, introducing it by stating: As he is a reasonable man who is not deterred from using a hand truck for moving his trunk by the consideration that he has thus to move a trunk plus a truck, so am I reasonable in putting into your hands this useful, indeed indispensable, tool for mastering the ABC of iron metallurgy. Somewhat later, in introducing a discussion of the phase rule, which "it would be hardly proper to pass . . . by without an attempt to outline its meaning," for "a clear exposition of its applicability or jurisdiction is needed to restrain the half-initiated from misusing it and the uninitiated from being misled by these misuses," he writes-and I quote his statement because we cannot properly discuss the influence of time on a process until we know the state of equilibrium which would ultimately be reached by the system under consideration It is a most remarkable and valuable generalization, its conceptions help greatly toward getting a broad outlook on metallography, but its misconception has brought out a flood of obscuring writings. It tells us about the constitution towards which alloys tend, that which they reach when equilibrium is complete, when all tendencies have corrected themselves and have been complied with completely. Its application, in absence of true equilibrium, is like determining density with a telescope or even with a tuning fork; it is like the mad tea party at which the butter put into the works "f the watch was the best butter. Primarily, this report presents the results of direct efficiency tests which were conducted on the 200-hp Coal-Pak, hot water generator, No. 3 unit, at the Otterbein College heating plant in Westerville, Ohio. Also included is a comparison of fuel consumption of the old plant with that of the new plant, a comparison of efficiencies obtained by the indirect method on a 300-hp Coal-Pak, and the cost of gas vs coal to show the savings effected by the latter. Tests were conducted with ten different bituminous coals selected by Mr. S. A. Frye, business manager at Otterbein College. The coals, of ten different suppliers, from four different states and eight different seams, represented competitive products economically available to the heating plant. The tests were conducted by the usual plant personnel which consisted of the plant superintendent and two assistants. No outside supervision of any kind was given during the tests. The tests were made from Dec. 13, 1960, through Mar. 4, 1961. During this period, 300.03 tons of coal were burned in the No. 3 unit. This tonnage represented 25.5 pct of the total coal requirements for the 1960-61 season. Operation during the period was typical for the comfort heat load which the plant supplies. Of the 78.12 operating days, the boiler was on bank or holdfire 14.31 days, or 18.32 pct of the time. The length of individual bank periods varied from 2 hr to three days. Run periods varied from about 2 hr to 7.26 days. DESCRIPTION OF PLANT AND HEATING EQUIPMENT The new Otterbein College heating plant, completed in the summer of 1957, is located in a 50x50 ft boiler room on the lower level of a combination maintenance building and heating plant. The building is situated away from the main college complex on a hillside, which allows for on-grade delivery of coal to the three bunkers. The bunkers are located directly above and connected with the individual stoker hoppers. Fig. 1 shows an in-plant view of the Coal-Pak installations. The No. 3, hot water, unit is at the extreme right. The heating plant consists of three 200-hp Coal-Paks. Unit No. 1 is operated at 4 psi and carries the steam heating load of 14,000 sq ft EDR (steam) installed in two buildings. Provision has been made to convert these buildings to hot water heating at some future date. Since the unit under maximum load conditions operates only at about 50 pct steaming capacity, a heat exchanger was installed to convert steam to hot water. Thus, during light loads in mild weather the unit can be employed more efficiently to supply both steam and hot water and eliminate the need for operating either of the two hot water units. Units No. 2 and No. 3 serve a hot water heating circuit for a large group of 21 buildings of the College. These boilers deliver hot water at temperatures up to 200°F to the various buildings through distribution lines in tunnels. The present calculated maximum heat loss for the College is 15.195 million Btu per hr. The Coal-Paks have individual design capacities of 6.700 million Btu per hr. Table I lists the design date for the Coal-Paks. The No. 3 unit was chosen as the test unit, primarily because of its bunker location at the far end of the delivery ramp. Because of this location any excess coal above bunker capacity could be conveniently stored and isolated from the adjoining bunkers. Each bunker has a capacity of 30 to 35 tons of coal. Cast X-40 alloy with the lowest nitrogen content studied had a 100-hr rupture stress at 1500°F about equal to the reported value for the commercial alloy. Increases in nitrogen content progressively decreased the rupture strength, and with about 0.1 to 0.2 pct N a minimum strength was reached, but there was no accompanying change in microstructure. Further increases in nitrogen resulted in the fomzation of progressively increasing amounts of a lamellar, pearlitic-type structure at the grain boundaries, with accompanying increases in rupture strength, and above about 0.25 to 0.33 pct N, the rupture strength exceeded the normally reported values. Two series of melts representing different melting stocks exhibited minimum rupture strengths at different nitrogen contents. This suggests that some unidentwed trace element not removed by vacuum melting has a strong influence on the response of this alloy to variations in nitrogen content. In a series of melts with manganese contents ranging from 0.6 to 3.2 pct, the material with the lowest manganese content had the highest 100-hr rupture strength at 1500°F. The manganese variations had no appreciable effect on the microstructure. CAST cobalt-base alloys such as X-40* exhibit high strengths at elevated temperatures (1500°F and above), but they also show considerable scatter in high-temperature properties. Since the design of parts for critical applications must be based on the minimum expected properties, this broad scatter appreciably lowers the design strength of the alloy. If the relatively poor properties exhibited by a few test parts from any given group could be improved, the spread in properties would be narrowed, and the design stress could more closely approach the average expected properties. The purpose of this research investigation was to learn what were the causes of these erratic properties and, if possible, to find methods for eliminating them. Earlier unpublished work showed that vacuum melting markedly influenced the high-temperature strength of cast X-40 alloy. There were indications that this behavior may have been the result of changes in the nitrogen or manganese content of the castings. Consequently, in the current investigation, the influence of variations in nitrogen and manganese content on the structure and high-temperature properties of cast X-40 alloy was studied. In this program, X-40 melting stock was vacuum melted to produce a base material that was very low in nitrogen content and in volatile trace elements. Additions were then made to this base material to produce alloys of the desired composition. The metal was cast into investment molds producing coupons which were machined into stress-rupture bars. These bars were subjected to stress-rupture tests and me-tallographic study to determine the influence of changes in analyses (nitrogen and manganese content) on the structure and properties. Material—The melting stock used for these experi-ments was in the form of shot from two master heats of commercial X-40 alloy. Only one master heat was used in a given series of melts. Thus, any differences in structure or properties that showed up in the specimens from a given series would be the result only of the intended variations in composition. I DESIRE to communicate to the Institute the results of a few analyses which bear on the condition of carbon in gray and white iron. These analyses were made in the course of an investigation, now in progress, of the chemical composition of "chilling" irons. It will be remembered that Bell says he found no material difference in the amount and condition of carbon in gray and white pig iron made at the Clarence furnace, in England, and he therefore refers the difference in color and appearance in these two varieties of iron to the size of the particles of graphite. I quote from his "Chemical Phenomena of Iron Smelting:" "The inference I would draw from the information afforded by these analyses is, that the condition of iron in respect to its so-called `richness' is, within certain limits, entirely independent of its chemical constitution... . In the fluid state, I conceive the carbon, so taken up, confers upon the iron the property of fusion much below the temperature at which the pure metal melts, and the carbon itself may be regarded as dissolved in the iron. If, during the process of manufacture, the pig metal has been formed at a low temperature, consolidation, I imagine, takes place under such circumstances that the crystals are so minute, and the carbon which is separated assumes the uncombined or graphitic form in particles so minute as to be invisible, and, in consequence, the iron is white. If, on the other hand, the furnace is working at a very high temperature, the intensely heated iron crystallizes with large facets, upon which the extruded carbon assumes the condition of distinct plates or flakes. Should the temperature be less intense, these crystals are of smaller dimensions, and the separated carbon is less conspicuous, and, as the temperature of the furnace declines, the crystals decrease in size, as do the flakes of carbon, until both disappear in white iron. . . . Returning, then, to temperature as the cause of differences in quality of pig iron, the `chilling' of gray metal, and its conversion into white, may be regarded as the effect of preventing, by rapid cooling, the formation

WHEN the copper smelters were built, in Montana, all of the refractory products which were used in their construction were shipped in from Eastern factories. It was apparent that if a material suitable for the manufacture of these products could be found within the State, a saving of freight could be effected and a new industry built up. Prospecting for such materials was started and experiments were made with samples from numerous deposits. Considerable effort and funds were expended in an attempt to manufacture silica brick from Dillon quartz, a light colored sandstone that is found near Dillon, Mont., on the Oregon Shortline railroad. As a brick material the Dillon quartz was a failure, but it has proved very satisfactory as a silica cement. It is now being used in laying silica brick and for reverberatory furnace bottoms. A bed of quartzite that is particularly suited to the manufacture of high-grade silica brick -was finally discovered at Browns Spur, 6 miles west of Anaconda. The material from this deposit is now being used in the manufacture of the Anaconda silica brick, which have gained a wide reputation for heat-resisting and lasting qualities. The analysis of all average sample of this quartz is: SiO2,, 96.7; Fe203, 0.3; Al203, 2.5; CaO, 0.3 per cent. The very low percentage of fluxing ingredients makes this a most refractory material. All of the Anaconda silica brick are hand molded. Various types of brick machines have been tried, but the hand-mold process proved the best suited to the manufacture of silica brick from this material. The silica is first put through a jaw crusher and is then clumped into wet pans, where 4 per cent. of lime paste is added, to produce a bond. Without the lime the. material would not be plastic enough to mold. After a few minutes' grinding in the wet pans the material is conveyed to the molder, who forces it into the molds by hand. The brick are then dumped on pallets and placed in the drier, where they are left until dry enough to be set in the kilns. Some of the brick are re-pressed before being dried. They are burned about five days, in round down-draft kilns. It is not necessary to have as much heat in the kilns as the brick will be subjected
