THE scope of this paper will be limited to finished materials that contain a large preponderance (around 80 per cent or more) of magnesium oxide. The large and commercially important production of refractory dolomite and modified dolomites is not discussed here, and the production of magnesium basic carbonate for use as a heat insulator is barely mentioned. The discussion is confined mainly to magnesias produced in comparatively great quantity by direct processing of naturally occurring raw materials and hence excludes secondary or highly purified products such as pharmaceutical products or U.S.P. light and heavy calcined magnesias of commerce. NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature of the magnesia products that will be discussed is somewhat confusing, in that it is customary in the trade to designate as "calcined magnesite" the materials that result from the calcining of magnesite to temperatures that remove the contained carbon dioxide. The finished product, therefore, is not magnesite at all but simply a more or less pure magnesium oxide or magnesia. Furthermore, partly for statistical and partly for commercial reasons, it has been customary, during recent years, to classify as "calcined magnesite" products that result from the heat-treatment of magnesium hydroxide precipitated from magnesium-containing brines; products that, obviously, have no relationship whatever to magnesite. In the listing of magnesia-containing materials, tonnages of which are regularly reported by the Bureau of Mines, reports ordinarily are made under two headings: "caustic calcined" magnesite, in which all of the varieties of products treated at relatively low temperatures are lumped; and "dead-burned" magnesite, in which are included both high-purity and low-purity, and particularly both high-iron and low-iron, materials that have been so heat-treated that the magnesium oxide occurs predominantly as crystalline periclase-materials used almost entirely for refractory purposes. In 1940 the apparent domestic consumption of "caustic calcined" magnesite was approximately 17,000 tons, about 95 per cent of which was produced in this country. The apparent consumption of "dead-burned" magnesite was approximately 172,000 tons, some 82 per cent of which was domestically produced. In both total quantity and percentage of material produced within the United States, these figures are record highs for many years past. UTILIZATION As indicated by these figures, the major tonnage outlet for magnesia is the refractories industry, in which magnesia is employed principally in three ways: (I) as dead-burned grain magnesite for the construction and maintenance of the hearths or bottoms of basic open-hearth furnaces; (2) in the form of refractory magnesite bricks and shapes; and (3) as a chemical

It is often desirable to obtain one or more accurate horizontal sections of a blast furnace after blowing out. Wishing to do this, last April, in the case of No. 4 furnace at Glendon, which had worn in a very remarkable manner, the method described below was employed, with very good results. A scaffold was fixed in the furnace, and on it was placed a drawingboard, covered with paper, the top of which was made level at exactly the height at which the section was to he taken. (Fig. 8.) The centre of the furnace (which had previously been found, and marked on a plank across the top) was laid off on it by dropping a plumb-bob from above, and a strong needle was driven into the board in the centre. I have in a previous communication called the attention of the Institute to the geognostical relations of the crystalline iron ores belonging to the Eozoic racks of North America, at which time I noticed (1) those associated with the gneisses of the Laurentian series, (2) those of the crystalline schists of the Huronian, as seen in Northern Michigan and in many localities along the Appalachians; (3) those of Southeastern Missouri associated with petrosilex porphyries and schistose rocks, and presumed to be nearly of the same age with those of the Huronian schists; and (4) the highly titaniferous ores of the Norian or Labradorian series from Essex County, N. Y., and from various parts of Canada. It may here be remarked that, although the presence of titanium is most marked in the Norian ores, this objectionable element is sometimes found in the schistose ores of the Huronian, and to a lesser extent in certain Laurentian magnetites. The ores of each of these geological divisions have their individual peculiarities, which serve to distinguish them to such a degree that the magnetites and specular ores of the Laurentian are as dissimilar to those of the Huronian as are the crystalline silicated rocks of the two series. As it happens that these mineralogical dissimilarities correspond to diflerences in composition and in adaptability to different processes of manufacture, which, in the present condition of the iron industry, are objects of special consideration to metallurgists, it will be seen that these geognostical distinctions become of great practical importance. During the past year I was desired by the Geological Commissioners of Pennsylvania to devote a few weeks to certain geological studies in the eastern part of the State, in the course of which I was enabled to make, with regard to its crystalline iron ores, some observations to which I desire to call the attention of the Institute. I may mention, in passing, that the great South Mountain belt, from the Schuylkill to the Delaware, is composed of Laurentian rocks, in which are found the characteristic ores of the series like those of the Highlands of New Jersey and New York, and of the Adiron-

WHEN Spain established colonies on the North American continent, some of her land grants, in what is now the United States, reserved to the Crown deposits of gold, silver, and mercury. Later mineral rights were reserved under some of the English Crown charters involving land in the eastern part of North America, with provisions for the payment of royalties thereon to the Crown. Reservation of mineral deposits to the United States Government was instituted by an ordinance of Congress on May 20, 1785, which applied to such deposits in the Northwest Territory, then north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi River, and provided that there should be reserved "one third of all gold, silver, lead, and copper mines, to be sold or otherwise disposed of as Congress shall hereafter direct." Little was known then of the mineral resources of the country; the Great Lakes copper region had just come into the possession of the United States by treaty and much of the western mineral land still belonged to France and Spain. The policy of leasing mineral deposits was enacted by Congress under the act of March 3, 1807, which provided that "the President of the United States shall be, and is hereby, authorized to lease any lead mine which has been or may hereafter be discovered in the Indiana Territory, for a term not exceeding five years," and in the same year the Government reserved 345,600 acres of land in northern Illinois, valuable for lead. In 1816 Congress provided that in all cases where a tract of public land containing a lead mine or salt spring was applied for by settlers on the public domain, no permission to work the mine or spring would be granted without the approbation of the President of the United States. By the act of March 1, 1847 (9 Stat. 146), the control of mineral lands was transferred, with all records, from the War Department to the Treasury Department, and by the act of March 3, 1849 (9 Stat. 395), supervisory powers over lead and other mines of the United States were transferred to the Secretary of the Interior. Following the discovery of gold in California in 1848, President Polk advocated the leasing of mineral lands acquired from Mexico under the treaty of 1848. However, owing to the lack of communication and transportation facilities and the consequent difficulty of checking on production and operations, leasing was found impracticable. Mining was permitted to be carried on in each district under rules made by the miners themselves and patterned after the Mexican mining system. To meet the situation, Congress enacted mining laws in 1866, 1870, and 1872, which provided for possession by location and for private ownership, after discovery, by patent of essentially all mineral deposits belonging to the United States, except coal. Many other acts were passed by Congress applying to specific regions and states, reserving salt, lead, or other minerals, some of which provided for the leasing of such deposits. However, very few if any leases were issued thereunder. Not until 1901 (31 Stat. 745) were the mining laws extended to include salt, and in 1910 they were revised to specify salines and associated products. At the turn of the century, it became more and more evident that the mining laws developed for metallic minerals were not practical for the development and conservation of oil and gas, coal, potash, phosphate, or oil shale. Following withdrawals by the Secretary of the Interior as authorized by the act of June 25, 1910, the Department of the Interior recommended leasing legislation; however, it was not until February 25, 1920, that the Mineral Leasing Act was passed by Congress. This act authorized leasing all public lands potentially valuable for oil, gas, coal, phosphate, sodium, or oil shale. The Organic Act, creating the Geological Survey in 1879, imposed upon its director the duty of classifying the public lands.' The early years of the Survey were devoted largely to the accumulation of fundamental data and, with only minor exceptions, land classification was not seriously undertaken until 1906. Since that year, it has been actively pursued with respect particularly to leasable minerals and water power values. On March 3, 1873 (17 Stat. 607) Congress authorized the sale of coal lands of limited acreage to individuals at $10 to $20 an acre, depending on the distance from a railroad, and in 1907 a new scale of prices was adopted by the Secretary of the Interior, based, more logically, on the quality and thickness of the coal deposits, their depth below the earth's surface, and their accessibility. At that time it was much cheaper and easier to obtain incidental title to coal rights under the homestead laws at $1.25 an acre. On March 3, 1909, the first separation act (35 Stat. 844) became a law. It authorized patents, with a reservation of the coal and mining rights involved to the United States, to persons who in good faith had entered public lands under the non-mineral land laws prior to withdrawal, classification, claim, or report that such lands were valuable for coal. It solved the problem only partially, and the practice thereupon adopted by the department of making coal withdrawals "from all forms of entry" instead of "from coal entry" expedited the more complete solution effected by later acts. By the act of June 22, 1910 (36.Stat. 583) withdrawn and classified coal lands were declared subject to entry under the homestead, desert land, and Carey acts, provided a waiver of the coal rights accompanied the application, and by the act of April 30, 1912 (37 Stat. 105) the same privilege was extended to State selections and isolated tracts. The act of August 24, 1912 (37 Stat. 496) extended the separation policy to lands withdrawn for oil and gas in Utah, and finally the act of July 17, 1914 (38 Stat. 509) extended it to all nonmineral filings on public lands theretofore or thereafter

INTRODUCTION The western USA contains significant coal reserves in seams 10 feet or more in thickness which lie too deep for surface mining. As part of a demonstration of the use of two legged shield supports in the United States, Kaiser Steel Corporation, under contract to the US government used the longwall method to mine a ten foot thick coal seam in New Mexico. Caliper type shield supports and double drum shearers were used in three longwall panels. During the test, technical, production, and safety data were collected to objectively evaluate the performance of the shields in mining the thick coal seam. This paper presents discussions of practical operating experience and summary statistics to aid the mining industry in planning longwall mines in similar conditions.

INTRODUCTION Before discussing the use of the free piston; it may be well to explain briefly the type of gas lift valves with which the loo] is designed to function. The gas lift valve ii nothing more or less than a small back pressure regulator. It; construction consists of an outer hous ing covering a seamless metallic bellows in such a way as in form a sealed pressure vessel or pressure dome. To the bellow* in attached a stem and to this stem is attached a .rating member. When the valve is run into the hole, a pre-delermined pressure charge is placed in the pressure dome. As shown in Fig. 1. the valve is furnished in four different major assem-blies. to accomplish good results in different types of wells. The valve is mounted on a pup joint (Fig. 2a) : the eoin-plele assembly is entered into the tubing siring at the desired location. Each valve is furnished with a revere flow check valve (Fig. 2-b) to eliminate any back wash through the mechanism. Valve action is as follows: At any time the casing pressure is allowed to exceed the pressure forces within the pressure dome of the valve, the valve simply opens and passes gas from the rasing annulus into the tubing. When the casing pressure forces arc allowed to bleed to a force less than the pressure force within the dome, of the valve. the valve closes. With this type of construction. it is possible to open and close the valve or valves at will from the surface, the medium of the gas pressure in the rasing annnlus. The cycle of operation is governed by a tine cycle motor valve, commonly referred to as a gas lift interutitter or gas life surfacr controller (Fig. 3). In actual practice. after the well is unloaded only one valve is in operation . . . all other valve.: remain in the closed position. On pre-determined time cycles, it is possible to open and close this operating valve at will, and to pass the desired amount of gas through this valve wheneler needed. This method of gas lift is widelv used and has been found In be very efficient. However, it has long been known that even greater efficiency would be obtained if it were possible to place Piston between the injected gas and the fluid head. The free piston which will be discussed here was designed to accomplish this end and has been found to do so with very satisfactory results. DESIGN AND OPERATION OF THE FREE PISTON Basically. the free piston consist- of a telescoping assembly in which are incorporated the various control and operating parts (Fig. A set of sleeve valves which are opened and closed by movement of the telescoping section is contained in the. tool. A cross section of the free piston is shown in Fig. 4-11, 'rile main body cotain- a seamless monel bellows of the same type as that generally used in pressure charged gas lift valves (Fig. 4-c), and a valve core to permit placing a pressure charge in the bellows before the free piston is placed in service. The bellows is the main control unit of the free piston and performs two function: 1. It governs the opening and closing of the sleeve valves. a.: dictated by the producing activities of the well in which the piston is operating. 2. In its normal position, it holds a rubber packer in an elongated position to permit passage of fluid between the packer and the tubing walls. The death of Louis Janin, which took place Mar. 6, 1914, at Santa Barbara, terminated the earthly career of almost the last survivor, and one of the most illustrious members, of that group of American mining engineers and metallurgists who, in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, directed the development of the mineral resources of the Pacific slope. From the measurement of internal-oxidation band widths in Ag-In and Cu-A1 alloys, products for the solubility No and the diffusivity Do of oxygen in silver and apparent NODo products in copper have been obtained over a range of temperature. The NODO products for silver are in agreement with the product of the individually determined No and Do values of Eichenauer and Müller. Although interstitial diffusion of oxygen in silver is expected, the temperature-independent factor Do of the diffusion coefficient does not agree well with the theory of Wert and Zener. For Cu-A1 alloys internal oxidation does not follow the expression derived for ideal kinetics, since the apparent NODo product calculated from internal-oxidation measurements is a function of the alloy content in the specimen. Thus, unequivocal values for No or DO or even the product NODO in copper are not available from the literature. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility NO and diffusivity DO of oxygen in fcc metals are lacking and difficult to determine, partially because internal-friction measurements are not applicable. Permeability experiments and Sieverts7-type adsorption -desorption methods3 have met with difficulty; however, Eichenauer and Müller4 have recently reported on the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in silver as determined by the latter technique . Rhines, Johnson, and Anderson,5 and independently Meijering and Druyvesteyn,' introduced the possibility of deriving values for the product NODO in a metal from measurements of the widths of internal-oxidation zones (subscales) formed during the internal oxidation of alloys. In addition to these authors, several other investigators7-9 have made such measurements in various silver and copper alloys at various temperatures, mostly using me- chanically polished specimen surfaces. The purpose of this investigation was to determine over a range of temperature the calculated products NODO in silver and copper from systematic measurements of the widths of internally oxidized zones in Ag-In and Cu-A1 alloys, using specimens with electro-etched surfaces. Consider the internal oxidation of a dilute solid-solution alloy in which the base metal is not oxidized. If diffusion of oxygen is the rate-controlling step, then the depth 5 of the internal-oxidation zone is given by where y is a dimensionless parameter and t the oxidation time. Based on the solution of the diffusion equation, wagnerl0 has shown that under certain conditions several mathematical simplifications may be used in the evaluation of y, so that Eq. [I] may be expressed for the case that y « 1, and y(Do/DB) 1, where N(so)the is the equilibrium solubility (mole fraction) of oxygen in the solvent metal for the given oxidizing atmosphere, is the mole fraction of the solute metal in the bulk alloy, 4 is the diffusivity of the solute in the base metal, and v is the ratio of oxygen atoms to solute atoms in the precipitated oxide BO,. Rearranging Eq. [2] Maak' has derived an expression analogous to Eq. [3] for the case that an external-oxide scale, in addition to an internal-oxidation zone, is formed. THE geophysical scene shifts and alters, the emphasis changes, and new possibilities loom, but the tendency is always towards widening the field and deepening the analytical penetration. Seismic methods have had their heyday, the torsion balance is being displaced by the gravimeter, electrical methods are showing deeper penetration, soil analysis is the newest tool, and gamma-ray logging appears on the horizon. One of the striking features of re- cent geophysical work in the oil fields has been the marked decrease in the number of seismic crews employed. Although the percentage of company crews is believed to have increased appreciably. the sum total has fallen sharply, as shown by the figures for the Gulf Coast area. About two years ago probably over 100 seismic parties were operating there, whereas now there are only about 35. This decrease may be partly due to the low prices of petroleum with a consequent reluctance to spend money to increase crude-oil re- serves but more probably to the fact that reflection and refraction shooting have been carried on so extensively that they have been applied to a large pro- portion of the areas in which they may reasonably be expected to succeed. Some of the earlier enthusiasm, particularly over reflection prospecting, may have erred on the side of over- optimism; some of the present curtailment may be due to over pessimism; but in the opinion of various observers seismic work at the present rate seems to be at it- optimum. It nevertheless remains pre-eminent as a technique for detailing structures in areas where good reflections can be obtained and is the only method that will give accurate depth to definite beds. Results may be poor in certain areas but many regions still remain wherein it can be applied, so that plenty of structural mapping remains to be done by the reflection seismic method.

It has long been known that mud properties affect drilling rate and that drilling with water is as much as six to .seven times faster than with mud. However, it is not known why drilling rates with mud are lower. Recent studies show what fluid properties govern microbit drilling rate and also provide a quantitative correlation of these fluid properties and hydraulics with microbit drilling rate. All the microbit tests reported in this paper were made with a low permeability (about 10 md) limestone. They were conducted at constant bit weight and rotary speed with varying fluid properties, flow rate Q and nozzle dinnteter d. The tests showed that (1) drilling rate in a given system with constant circulating rate and nozzle velocity is a function of the kinematic viscosity [viscosity /density, (cp)/ p (density)] of the drilling fluid measured at near bit nozzle shear rates; (2) the combined effect of fluid properties and hydraulics on microbit drilling rate is defined by a Reynolds number function (kQp/dp); (3) for the same kinematic viscosity, drilling rate is independent of solids content; and (4) for the same kinematic viscosity, drilling rate is independent of fluid loss. INTRODUCTION The fact that mudding up reduces rate of penetration is well known, but the reduction varies from well to well. The rate with mud may be 80 percent of the water rate or it may be as low as 15 percent. Since this reduction of up to seven-fold takes place under conditions of constant bit weight, rotary speed and mud circulating rate in a uniform formation, it can only be a result of the change in fluid properties. Previous work1-" both in field tests and in laboratory microbit tests) showed that drilling rate with mud is lower than with water (Figs. 1 and 2). Microbit tests also confirm, at least qualitatively, the field observation that drilling rate slows with increased pressure differential from borehole to formation (Fig. 3). The qualitative effect of drilling rate of bit weight, rotary speed and rate of mud circulation are also the same for the field and microbit rig. For these reasons, the industry generally accepts microbit results as being qualitatively meaningful in terms of field application.

The district of Patricia, in the province of Ontario, lies northwest of the Albany River and extends northward to Hudson Bay. Formerly this was the unorganized district of Keewatin, the southern part of which was divided in 1912 between the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. The interprovincial boundary now runs north from Lake of the Woods for 275 miles and thence northeast 375 miles to Hudson Bay. This district is comparable in size to all the older part of Ontario south of the Canadian Pacific Railway east of Lake Huron—thus it is roughly one-third of the whole of the present provincial area. The central part of this great triangle is one of the least accessible parts of Canada. From it streams flow southward to the English River, southeastward to the Albany, northward to Hudson Bay and the Hayes River, and westward to Lake Winnipeg. None of the streams is large and canoe travel is not easy. The only industry it has ever had is the trade in furs. Until the development of the airplane on a commercial basis, the only means of travel was by canoe or dog-train. There is not a mile of railway in the whole district. The two areas to be dealt with lie in the southwestern part of Patricia. Red Lake is 50 miles east of the Manitoba boundary and 75 miles north of the transcontinental railway from Cochrane to Winnipeg. Woman Lake is 50 miles farther east and slightly farther north. The late Dr. D. B. Dowling, of the Geological Survey of Canada, visited Red Lake and spent some time there during his exploration survey from Lac Seul to Berens River in 1893. He also visited the Woman Lake basin during the same journey, but his examination of it was much less detailed, the great area covered by him during the one field season making it impossible to make more than a hurried reconnaissance. Some prospecting in the Red Lake district followed Dowling's exploration, but the distance from railway was too great for any systematic work to be done. In 1922, following the usual plan, the Ontario Department of Mines made a geological reconnaissance of the English River, following :in instrumental survey of that river and its lakes by the Department of Lands. Forecasting demand is an art as well as a science, and much personal judgment is required. National forecasts made for sand and gravel, crushed stone, and/or aggregate may be misleading or unhelpful locally. This is because of significant variation in demand within different geographic and/or political areas in the US, and/or the use of an inadequate data base and forecasting methodology. The best forecasts may be made for local or regional market areas, irrespective of geographic or political boundaries, provided a proper data base is available.1 The Bureau of Mines compiles detailed statistics on commodities sold or used in the construction industries and, therefore, is in an advantageous position to make national aggregate demand forecasts. Definitions of some terms used in this presentation are necessary before proceeding.

A method is presented for the accurate calculation of the cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressures of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures of known composition. The mixtures may contain six and quite possibly any number of components including paraffins, isoparaffins, olefins, acetylenes, naphthenes and aromatics. The approach is similur to that used for calculating critical pressures and cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures. The critical pressure, the normal boiling point and the approximate vapor pressure behavior of each component are all that art required. A stepwise culculation procedure is necessary for mixtures containing more than two components. From an analysis of 22 binary systems and 118 mixtures, the average deviation of calculated cricondentherm pressures from reported values is 2.4 per cent. For nine multicomponent mixtures the average deviation is 1 per cent. Considering 19 binary systems and 108 mixtures, the average deviation of calculated cricondenbar pressures from reported values is 1.7 per cent. For 15 multi-component mixtures, the average deviation is 2.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION A knowledge of the phase behavior in the critical region of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures is of value both in industrial processing operations and for the optimum operation of gas condensate reservoirs. Accurate methods of calculating the critical temperatures and critical pressures4,6,7,8,9,23 and cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures6p10 of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures are available in the literature. If the cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressures could be calculated with equal accuracy, the entire phase diagram of a multicomponent hydrocarbon mixture could be well approximated. The work of Etter and Kay6 is limited to systems containing the normal paraffins and has not been tested on systems containing a heavier component than heptane. In addition, the development of their multicomponent equations is based upon a limited number of mixtures containing from three to six components. Silverman and Thodos have considered systems containing both paraffinic and non-paraffinic hydrocarbons, but their correlation is limited to binary systems and is highly inaccurate for methane systems. Eilerts has done extensive work on the cricondenbar pressure; he has produced an excellent correlation for binary systems. However, his procedure for multicomponent mixtures is chiefly useful for highly complex mixtures requiring a knowledge of the vapor-liquid equilibrium behavior of the mixtures; he has not considered the cricondentherm pressure. The objective of this study was the development of an accurate and rapid method for the calculation of the cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressures of multicomponent mixtures containing all types of hydrocarbons and having a wide volatility range. The approach that was adopted is similar to that used by Grieves and Thodos for cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperaturesl0 and for critical pressures.9 However, methane systems had to be considered separately and a modified stepwise calculation procedure was utilized for the cricondertherm pressure. The correlations were developed in a manner similar to those for critical pressures and cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures. Based upon binary data reported in the literature it was observed that the ratios of cricondentherm and cricondenbar pressure to the pseudocritical pressure (molar average), pt/ppc and pp/ppc, respectively, in two-component systems depended upon the mole fraction of the low-boiling component and upon the diversity in properties of the two components. A dimensionless boiling-point parameter Tb,/Tb was chosen to represent the diversity in properties of the components. For a binary system, Ti,'is the molar average of the normal boiling points of the two components involved. Blasting to prepare orebodies for in situ leaching usually involves extraordinary conditions which sometimes require special and innovative techniques. To date several unusually large blasts have been made for leaching with results that are very encouraging. Among the factors considered when designing these large blasts are orebody shape and depth, rock properties, vibration and damage potential, loading logistics, and safety. All of these factors, and others, are discussed with an effort made to put each of them into its proper perspective.

Basic procedures in the mining industry have changed only slightly over the centuries since metals and fossil fuels became an essential part of man's economic and cultural life. Mining techniques of the 20th century bear a close resemblance to those of the ancients: exploration, ore breakage and removal, hoisting, and processing. The great advances, however, have been in equipment and machinery of greater size and speed which allow greater efficiency in each of these operations, with a corresponding reduction in manpower requirements. Yesteryear production was measured in pounds per man-day; today a giant and complex, but highly efficient, continuous mining machine can remove as much as eight tons of material a minute from the coal face. If our energy and metal demands of the future are to be met, and at this time it can be assumed that coal will continue to supply a significant part of the energy demand, other dramatic and spectacular technologic advances must be accomplished. Along with mechanization, however, public policy will require the industry to place greater emphasis on health and safety protection, as has been well demonstrated by recent actions of Congress. Together, fossil fuels and metals formed the basis for the industrial revolution-coal to develop power and metals to transform power into useful energy. Strangely enough, however, the mining industry the world over has lagged behind the continuous social changes brought on by the industrial revolution, such as preventive health and industrial hygiene services, and other programs directed to the well-being of the worker. In some countries this resistance, to change may have led in part to the nationalization of the coal industry. Whether this disinclination to social change in the industry of the United States reflects managerial attitudes, inept labor leadership, government neglect, or economic relationship would be the subject of an interesting study. Doubtless the mores of miners and their resistance to change, as well as their geographic isolation from other industrial groups, may have had a strong influence on these factors. In every major coal mining country the accident rate in the coal industry is substantially higher than other industrial groups, and the cost of pneumoconiosis compensation in some countries is greater than the combined costs for all other occupational diseases from all other industries. The high social cost of occupational accidents and diseases may have been a factor in the closing of the industry in at least two countries. Despite diminishing manpower needs, the industry is faced with critical manpower shortages. Miners once reared their sons to be miners; now it appears that the opposite is true. The development of engineering rock classification systems has received considerable at tent ion during the past few years. The purpose, application and method of assigning an index of rock quality, vary considerably between these systems. Several of them are directed toward the assessment of stability and support potential of an excavation whereas other systems are estimating a particular response of the rock, i.e. blastability or ripability. In the most widely accepted engineering rock classification systems, rock quality is expressed either in terms of meaningful descriptions or by a quantitative evaluation of a geomechanical property or properties. The application of sonic wave parameters in the engineering classification of rock mass and rock material has been the subject of considerable interest amongst investigators. The advantages of utilizing such techniques include minimal sample preparation, capabilities for large scale testing and the ability to perform non- destructive as well as reproducible tests. The purpose of the research presented in this paper was to determine the most appropriate sonic wave parameters for engineering rock classification purposes, to utilize these findings in developing new or modifying existing classification systems and, finally, to apply this information in the prediction and analysis of blasting wave characteristics.
