BeTa brass (consisting of approximately equal atomic proportions of copper and zinc) exists as a random solid solution at high temperatures, hut at low temperature< an ordered structure is stable, with the copper and zinc atoms occupying alternate sites on the body-centered-cubic lattice. On cooling, ordering commences at a temperature of 450° to 470°C., depending on the composition. The degree of ordering progressively increases at lower temperatures until it becomes virtually complete at about 100°C. The electrical resistivity of the alloy illustrates the changes clearly (Fig. I). This type of reaction has been a favored subject for study by physicists. The present paper is a continuation of the work on the relationship between the magnetic and the phase transformations in carbon steels during quenching. An account was given by the author in a previous paperl† of an investigation of this relationship during a continuous quench. The experimental difficulties then encountered prevented a conclusive proof of the existence or absence of such a relationship. The conclusions of the previous paper were derived indirectly. The present paper deals with the same problem, but the method of attack is modified. The technique developed by Davenport and Bain2 in their well-known study of austenite transformation at subcritical temperature was adopted in the present investigation. They have shown that the austenite to martensite transformation can be caused to proceed at a relatively slow rate by quenching steels into a hot metal bath. Slowing down of the rate of transformation, together with an observation by Lewis3 that a eutectoid steel can be preserved in the nonmagnetic state by such quenching, pointed out a possibility of a study of both transformations under more favorable conditions than previously described. The preliminary steps were connected with the technique of the hot bath quench. To study this phase of the present work a modification of the apparatus previously described&apos; was used. The modification consisted in the use of a hot quenching bath instead of brine, and in fixing the secondary and the primary coils of the apparatus in a stationary position in and around the bath. Tubular specimens, as in the previous investigation, were heated in a suitable furnace to a temperature in the austenitic range for the given steel and then were dropped into the quenching apparatus. The quenching bath was heated to a series of temperatures within the probable range at which the austenite to martensite transformation was expected to proceed at the slowest rate. Observations

The valuable mineral content of the current feed to the Miami concentrator is as follows: copper, 0.7 pct total; molybdenum, 0.01. Flotation of this ore yields a sulphide concentrate containing: chalcocite, 44 pct; molybdenite, 0.5; pyrite, 50.0; insol, 5.5. A combination of potassium ethyl xanthate and pentasol amyl xanthate as collectors, and pine oil as frother, are used in this flotation. Rejection of pyrite is encouraged by holding the amount of collectors used to the minimum consistent with copper recovery and by operating at high alkalinity (equivalent to 0.35-0.40 lb CaO per ton solution of pH 11.0).

The Whitwell firebrick hot-blast stove, for furnace use, may be seen in its three main stages of development in the accompnying drawings. Fig. 1 is the stove of 1869, the year in which it was thoroughly tested at the Consett furnaces, England; Fig. 2, the stove of 1876 and 1877, in which it was intended to reduce the cost by increasing the height; Fig. 3, the stove of 1880. Many modifications were made from time to time, generally in the direction of improvement, but the drawings illustrake the main features of progress. In the stove of 1869 the plan was to introduce the gas at A, and pass it up and down between each alternate wall, the air in the reverse direction, passing in at B. The friction in this stove was so great, owing to the restricted area of the passages and the many revervals of the gaseous current, that it was deemed imprudent to build the stoves higher than 28&apos; 6". Another reason mas that the great importance of cleaning was carefully kept in view, and it was very difficult to operate any hand scraper even to this depth. For these reasons the 22&apos; X 28½&apos; stove held the field for several yearn. A slight change made from this was to the 18&apos; X 40&apos; stove, where the height was increased, but the dumber of walls diminished. In this stove the friction was somewhat reduced, but so was the heating surface, and although it cost a little lea it was not any better. The next important change, seen in Fig. 2, was by increasing the height to GO feet and keeping the full number of walls in the stove. The heating surface and mass were much increased in proportion to the cost, and the friction decremed by alterllating over and under two or more walls, instead of one, as formerly. This stove gave admirable satisfactiou, but, although the proper doors were provided, it was very difticult to clean, owing to the long (distance the scrapers lid to traverse. The constantly increasing consumption of Portland cement in the State makes the above subject of particular interest at this time. The increasing demand is due to the rapid settling of the country and the fact that new uses are being found frequently for the above named commercial article. The industry is one that is bound to grow as the population increases, and this being the case it may be well at this time to consider briefly the matter of the chemical and physical composition of proper raw materials. A cement mixture is one that contains approximately 75 per cent, carbonate of lime, 15 per cent. silica, and 5 to 7 per cent. alumina and iron oxides; the other elements being magnesium carbonate and mall quantities of the rarer elements generally associated with limestone deposits. It can be readily seen from the above composition that it is possible to build up this mixture from a number of different materials. First.—A rock high in carbonate of lime can be mixed with clay or shale in such proportions as to bring about the desired composition ; the chief difficulty in the building up of such a mixture is that it is hard to find a clay or shale in which the silica-alumina ratio lies between 4 to 1 and 3 to 1 and at the same time shows physical characteristics which will make certain its adaptability to the practical manufacture of Portland cement. Very often clays or shales are found which are right chemically but contain large quantities of grit or free silica. Such clays or shale must be ground to extreme fineness in the mixture in order to make the silica and alumina combine with the lime when the mixture is burned. On the other hand, clays or hales are often found that have the proper physical characteristics but in which the amount of alumina is too great. THE CHAIRMAN (A. F. Lucas, Washington, D. C.).-Mr. Matteson has stated that the drilling of certain deep wells has proved a failure because they were abandoned too soon. He advises drilling more wells around salt domes, in the hope of finding additional oil sands. I have had some experience on the domes and believe that by drilling shallow wells, one loses time and money. I have advanced the opinion -that by drilling central wells in the -most likely location of a dome, showing is certain weakness, a better result could be obtained. I have in mind one locality where Mr. Knapp drilled a well through the salt¬the only location that I know of on the Gulf Coast where oil was found underneath the salt. Mr. Knapp found a great deal of gas in it. The salt itself was impregnated with oil and gas; and my opinion is that in such instances, instead of drilling so many wells around a dome, if you will attack at a weak point to as great a depth as a drill will go, the results will he much better. At present we have instances where drills have penetrated to 7300 or 7400 ft. in depth. Why couldn&apos;t the rich companies that are operating around the Gulf Coast arrange to get some special drilling apparatus and drill with the rotary first for, say, 3000 to 4000 ft., always in the likely location, and then proceed with the cable? I think we need just such work. In Mr. Matteson&apos;s paper lie quotes from an author whose writings in the Federal Bulletin and in the Louisiana Bulletins have been quite extensive. He states that oil and asphalt have originally been found on the surface of those domes. I have been over and examined nearly all of those domes (not all of them, because many have been developed in the last few years) and found no such occurrence at the time; and in the old well-known humps or big hills, as they generally called them; I have never found either salines or asphalt or petroleum. In only&apos; one instance it looked as though asphalt night have exuded out of the ground, and that was in the Sour Lake, but right in that neighborhood years previous to that a company had operated commercially-they had a little refinery there-and had found it so unprofitable that they pulled up stakes and quit.

IN 1915, the State of California passed a law of great scope and importance. This law has been in successful operation for., year and may be briefly described as an act "establishing and creating a department of. the State Mining Bureau for the protection of the natural resources of petroleum and gas from waste and destruction through improper operations in production; providing for the inspection of petroleum and gas wells; requiring all persons operating petroleum and gas wells to make certain reports" and providing the necessary officers and assessments-to carry out the provisions of the act. The statute provides for a separate department of the State Mining Bureau, under the general supervision of the State mineralogist, with a staff composed of a "state oil and gas supervisor" and four deputies. It rules that all petroleum and natural gas wells shall be drilled, operated or abandoned under the supervision of the State supervisor, who shall order such tests or remedial work as seems to him necessary to protect the interests of property owners and the general public. It also provides for a board of arbitration to consider orders given by the supervisor which are not acceptable to the well owner. Section 18 of the, act, which is the provision that is directly related to, this paper, requires "the owner of any well referred to in this act to keep a careful and accurate log of the drilling of such well;" and further requires that this log shall show the character and depth of the formations passed through or encountered in the drilling, particularly the location and depth of the water-bearing strata; the character of the water encountered (so far as ascertained); whether the water was shut off, and, if so, at what point; that it shall show completely the amounts, kinds and size of casing used; the depth at which oil-bearing strata are encountered; the depth and character of the strata, and whether all water was successfully and permanently shut off so as to prevent percolation or penetration into the oil-bearing strata. -

In this paper the economically significant minerals-chromite, meerschaum, and magnesite-of the Tastepe district are described. The cost data presented are believed by the author to be the first made public on Turkish chromite mining.

A full survey of the laboratory and blast furnace tests carried out on two types of acid pellets is given. From the lab tests it appears that type B has a better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A. The chemical composition and swelling indexes do not differ for both types. From the blast furnace test periods, carried out with a charge of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter, it follows that both types of pellets lead to the same pig-iron production, blast furnace permeability, and blast furnace dust production. It also can be concluded that type B pellets cause a significantly higher coke consumption.

Two samples of drilling mud from the Hastings oil field, Texas, were tested, and the solids in each were separated into small fractions of a limited range in particle size. The mineral composition of each fraction by X-ray analysis is reported, and the results are interpreted in relation to other measured quantities, such as the physical properties of the original samples and the density of the various fractions. It was found that only 7 to 8 per cent by weight of the solids was of colloidal dimensions and that neither of the samples contained montmorillonite but did contain illite. Considerable calcite was also found. These data should be useful to the geologist interested in the origin and history of sedimentary strata as well as to the petroleum engineer.

THE Russellton preparation plant of Republic Steel Corp., located north of Pittsburgh, Pa., prepares 395x0-in. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is 1/4xO-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed.

The layer growth method has been used to investigate the reaction kinetics of liquid titanium and hafnium with carbon and the [liq] - [liq + TiC] and [liq] - [liq + HfC] phase boundaries at temperatures above 1800°C. The equipment and experimental procedures used in this investigation are basically identical to those described in an earlier paper&apos; on the Zr-C reaction. Temperature control, however, was improved significantly by connecting a Latronics Colo-Ratio automatic pyrometer and a controller to the power source. The subsequent temperature variations were ±10°C; previously ±20°C was obtained using manual controls. The absolute accuracy of the pyrometer, however, must be considered to be only ±40°C.* The spectrographic analyses of the materials used in this study are listed in Table I. The isothermal reactions of titanium (1800° to 2700°C) and hafnium (2300" to 3000°C) with carbon (graphite crucibles) resulted in the formation of carbon-saturated liquid metal and layers of Tic and HfC, respectively. The thicknesses of the carbide layers, determined from metallographic measurements at 100 times, as a function of carburization time and temperature are given in Figs. 1 and 2. At each temperature, parabolic growth behavior for these reactions was observed and could be expressed as x2 =Kpt, where X is scale thickness (corrected for heating and coolingL), Kp the parabolic growth constant, and t the isothermal carburization time. Values of Kp as a function of temperature for the carbides are shown in Fig. 3 and listed in Table 11. The growth constants are expressible as: kpTiC = 0.2 exp(-61,800/RT) sq cm per sec for Tic and Kp HfC = 2.62 exp(-95,300/RT) sq cm per sec for HfC. The liquidus phase boundaries were determined from metal samples treated in graphite crucibles for different times ranging from 4 to 100 min at each of the temperatures indicated in Table 11. Metallographic examination revealed that the carbide precipitates were distributed uniformly throughout the frozen metal matrices. This is attributed to the rapid cooling rates (800°C per min) and the small difference in density between the precipitated carbide and the liquid metal.

Vapor pressure determinations were made on synthesized germanium sulfides. Germanium and cadmium were removed from sphalerite concentrates by fuming. The fume was retreated to separate some of the cadmium from the germanium and, at the same time, upgrade the germanium to more than 5 pet content. MANY sphalerite concentrates contain certain impurities which have economic value as byproducts. These may include the volatile sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead. This volume summarizes characteristics and the geological setting of porphyry copper deposits of the Western Hemisphere. Grouped by characteristics, porphyry copper deposits are described in six regions: Andean orogen, Appalachian orogen, Alaska, northern Cordilleran orogen, southern Cordilleran orogen, and the Caribbean. Each region has its own peculiarities of geologic setting, and those deposit characteristics that may be projected from one chapter to another will be used in reaching the conclusions from which to draw genetic models for porphyry copper deposits. The term porphyry in this volume denotes a type of ore deposit, rather than a rock classification. The classification of intrusive igneous rocks used in this volume is shown in Figs. 36a and 42 (pp. 103, 130). Some modern classifications suggest mineral-ratio definitions other than those used in this volume; however, most literature references cited are based on the classification shown in Figs. 36a and 42. The reader should be aware, therefore, that quartz monzonite in this volume contains from 35% to 65% potassuim feldspar and at least 10% quartz. A term used in this volume is defined where introduced within the context of a specific chapter. Distensional tectonic conditions are used in the sense of Cady (1972) in the Appalachian orogen, for example. Porphyry copper deposits are defined as large bodies of mineralized rock, usually including a porphyritic intrusive phase, that have copper sulfide minerals disseminated through them. The definition has no commercial connotation and is used strictly in a noneconomic sense to encompass the spectrum of copper mineralization associated with these deposits. Terms commonly accepted in the literature are not defined. Porphyry molybdenum and porphyry copper deposits commonly are distinguished by most economic geologists. The basis for the separation is summarized in one chapter of this volume. To permit the reader to more easily peruse the bibliography for any particular region, references will be found at the end of each chapter. The bibliography is not intended to be complete, but is designed to provide adequate minimum coverage for descriptions of deposits in the chapter concerned. Each entry is properly referenced in the text of that chapter to facilitate the reader&apos;s research into any particular topic. This volume is written from the point of view of the exploration geologist whose task it is to evaluate the structural, petrographic, mineralogic, and metallogenic characteristics of a porphyry copper deposit. The goal of the evaluation is to determine if, and where, concentrations of metals may exist in an igneous- hydrothermal system that includes the most complex set of geologic factors found in any of the many types of ore deposits. The successful porphyry copper geologist is simultaneously a petrographer, geochemist, structural geologist, and mineralogist. Some porphyry copper deposits have developed in volcanic arcs underlain by a Benioff seismic zone with a trench paralleling the arc. The most convincing example of a deposit known to have developed in an environment where subduction is an active process is the 3.3 m.y. (million years) old Dry Creek occurrence in the Aleutian arc (this volume). On the other hand, the younger deposits in the Cascades appear to have formed in a volcanic arc lacking both the Benioff zone and the offshore trench. Subduction is not widely accepted as an active mechanism for the period when the younger Cascade deposits formed. Subduction has also been questioned for deposits formed at a great distance from a plate boundary (e.g., Bingham). Regardless of the pros and cons regarding subduction, most deposits are associated with regional faults. Strike-slip

THE use of diamonds upon a large scale in drilling rocks, and the substitution to a certain degree of rotary diamond drills for the ordinary steel percussion drills, marks a new era in the art of mining. Since the invention by Leschot of the diamond drill, it has steadily advanced in its utility and range of application, and in the appreciation of miners and engineers. It must be claimed as one of the many gifts of science to the arts ; and it is, in particular, one of the fruits of the scientific education given at the Ecole Centrale, at Paris. Members are all, doubtless, more or less familiar with the construction of the drill and of the machinery by which it is applied in boring. It is, therefore, my present purpose only to direct your attention to some recent marked improvements, made by the American Diamond Drill Company, by which the economy and efficiency of the machines have been increased. Form of Bit. The annular or ring form of the drill-head or bit was, I believe, the earliest; and it is still in use, without essential modification, wherever it is desired to obtain a sample "core" or specimen of the rock traversed. But for mere drilling, regardless of the preservation of a test-core, a solid-head bit is preferred, except for very large holes. Until recently, these solid-head bits were made with a pointed cutting face shaped like an obtuse cone.
