A study was made of the effects of small quantities of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of colum-bium. Tensile specimens, hydrogenated to concentrations of 20 to 200 ppm, were tested at temperatures of 300°, 191°, and 77°K. Although hydrogen was found to have little effect on the strength of columbium, the ductility of Cb-H alloys was found to be quite sensitive to both hydrogen concentration and temperature. At 300°K, an abrupt loss in ductility occurred at a critical hydrogen concentration, although some ductility was observed beyond the tolerance limit. A similar result was found at a lower hydrogen concentration at 191°K. At 77°K, however, a more gradual loss in ductility with increasing hydrogen concentration was observed. Hydrogenated columbium was thus observed to undergo a ductile-brittle-ductile transition. Metallographic examination of fractured specimens revealed extensive porosity at both 77° and300°K which was a distinct function of hydrogen content. At 191°K, although some secondary cracking was noted, the amount of observed porosity was minimal. These observations are interpreted in terms of hydrogen solubility and mobility as a function of temperature and in the role of hydrogen in promoting growth of microcracks. lHE effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of the refractory metals is not, at present, completely understood. A number of studies have shown these materials to be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Roberts and Rogers1 have found that vanadium can be embrittled by hydrogen. It was further demonstrated that fracture undergoes a ductile-brittle-ductile transition as the temperature is lowered from 150° to -196°C; i.e., there is a ductility minimum observed at a certain temperature. The ductility is increased by either raising or lowering the temperature from this point. A more complete study by Eustice and Carlson2 on vanadium containing 10 to 800 ppm placed the ductility minimum at about -100°C with variations reportedly due to hydrogen content and strain rate. Ductility minima have also been found at certain temperatures for tantalum containing 7 ppm H3 and 140 ppm H.4 At hydrogen concentrations above 270 ppm, however, the ductility return at low temperatures was considerably reduced.4 In the case of columbium, some disagreement exists in the literature. Eustice and Carlson,5 Wilcox et al.,6 and Imgram et al.4 failed to find a ductility minimum although a composition-dependent ductile-brittle transition was observed. Hydrogen concentrations in these investigations were 20 ppm,5 1 to 30 ppm,6 and 200 to 390 ppm.4 However, Wood and Daniels7 observed a rather pronounced ductility minimum at hydrogen contents ranging from 19 to 252 ppm. Those theories of hydrogen embrittlement involving the precipitation of diatomic hydrogen which have been applies to ferrous metals8-12 do not seem to be applicable to the case of columbium and other exothermic occluders. Such theories propose that extensive crack formation and propagation occurs by the precipitation and expansion of diatomic hydrogen at internal voids and microcracks. However, photomicrographs of hydrogenated columbium do not show any evidence of damage introduced by the sorption and precipitation of diatomic hydrogen; rather, at high hydrogen concentrations, a hydrogen-rich second phase is precipitated.13'14 In addition, a number of these theories require the development of high hydrogen pressures at voids in the structure.8'10'12 This does not appear to be feasible in the concentration ranges discussed in the aforementioned paragraphs. The possible interaction of atomic hydrogen with microcracks resulting from dislocation pile-ups15,16 remains in doubt since pile-ups have not been observed in bcc metals17 including columbium.18 Wood and Daniels7 have put forth the possibility that a hydride precipitation could be responsible for crack nucleation in columbium. Work by Longson19 has shown that hydrogen embrittlement of columbium parallels the bulk solubility limit; i.e., as the solubility increases, for instance with temperature, the amount of hydrogen necessary to cause embrittlement also increases. Although a hydride precipitation appears attractive as a means of nucleating microcracks in columbium, what require more intensive study are the low-temperature anomalies which have been observed, i.e., the ductile-brittle-d'ictile transition characteristics. Also, the hydrogen concentrations where embrittlement occurs are often below the bulk solubility limits determined by Albrecht et al.13,14 and Walter and Chandler.20 This work is an attempt to determine more definitively the effects of concentration and temperature on the mechanical properties of dilute Cb-H alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ultrahigh-purity columbium rods, obtained from the Wah Chang Corp., were cold-reduced by rotary swaging. A chemical analysis is given in Table I. The material was cut into cylindrical blanks 1.50 ±0.005 in. long. Individual specimens were either given a stress relief anneal at 750°C or recrystal-lized at 1200°C. Resulting microstructures were either a "bamboo" structure characteristic of a wrought material or a recrystallized structure with a grain diameter of approximately 100 n. All heat treatments were carried out in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr or less.

Magnetic Measurements on Auriferous Veins in Brazil. BY MARK C MA¬LAMPHY (Contribution 72-Preprint; also Trans, vol 110 4900 words) One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul Recently the Companhia Estrada de Ferro e Minas Sao Jeronymo has been making a detailed survey of the area, and the author of this paper was requested to study the possibility of applying geophysical methods. The present paper gives a few details of the work and the results obtained The problem was difficult and the results not particularly brilliant, according to the author, but the data are believed to represent another advance in the application of the magnetic method of prospecting The instrument used was a Schmidt-Lloyd vertical magnetic field balance made by Askania Werke It did not prove of value for the discovery of auriferous veins of the type there found It is believed, however, that fair results may be expected when studying the continuation of veins that disappear under alluvial covering The data thus obtained should be of exceptional value in directing the excavational work of prospecting A short appendix to the paper gives the results of magnetic observations in the Sao Jeronymo coal mine

In the past, other authors.1, 2 have studied the influence of a skin effect on the productivity of a well. This skin effect, expressed by the skin factor S, is considered to be caused by a thin layer of impaired permeability immediately around the wellbore and extending vertically over the whole productive interval penetrated by the well. The skin factor S is defined as follows. Based on this, the impairment in productivity caused by a skin can be expressed by the fractional loss in productivity I, which is the loss in productivity divided by the total unimpaired productivity. For compressible flow in a stabilized well which drains a circular area of radius re, 1 is given by The present paper deals with a different kind of productivity impairment. Consider a well in which part of the productive formation is blocked off completely, either by incomplete penetration or by exclusion of parts of the productive zone by blank casing. In Fig. 1 (A, B and C), three examples are shown. Fig. 1(A) shows the situation where a well only partially penetrates the formation. This often is done to combat the actual or imagined danger of bottom-water coning. Fig. 1(B) shows a well producing from only the central portion of a productive interval. This type of completion is sometimes used where both water and gas coning are a problem. Although the case of a well producing through perforated casing cannot be treated in a manner similar to the previous two cases (where radial flow in the horizontal plane is assumed), Fig. 1(C) shows several intervals open to production and qualitatively describes this case (as will be discussed later). To study the loss in productivity in all these cases, two parameters are introduced which fully determine the impairment. The first is the penetration ratio "b," i.e., the total interval open to fluid entry divided by the total thickness of the productive zone. The second is the ratio hlrw. In this ratio, rw is the wellbore radius. The definition of h is more cumbersome. In Fig. 1(A), h is the thickness of the total productive interval. The streamline configuration for this case of partial penetration is basic to the other two cases considered (Views B and C of Fig. 1). It will be obvious from Fig. i (A) that the flow lines in the uppermost portion of the formation will be essentially horizontal, while those in the lower portion will curve upward toward the well. In Fig. 1(B), with only the middle portion of the zone open to production, the streamline configuration. of the upper half will be an exact mirror image of that in the lower half of the zone. Hence, for the case illustrated in Fig. 1(B), h is defined as one-half the total sand thickness. It follows, then, that in Fig. 1(C) h is one-half the distance between corresponding points in adjacent intervals. (In gun-perforated casing, h would be one-half the distance between perforations.) In a paper by Nisle4 and a paper given by the present authors5, the mathematical theory was developed for the cases under consideration. In the present publication, the emphasis is put on the results of these studies; consequently, the equations derived in Refs. 4 and 5 will be omitted, for the most part. The pressure drop p in a well producing from only a portion of the total formation thickness can, in analogy with Eq. 1, be expressed by Numerical solution of Eq. 5 by use of the IBM 650 leads to the following important conclusions. The Chief Consolidated properties are situated in the Tintic mining district of Utah, being included in Juab and Utah Counties, about 70 miles south of Salt Lake City. The drilling referred to in this paper has been carried on in the Chief Consolidated No. Pmine, the Gemini mine, and the Eureka Hill mine at Eureka, the Grand Central mine, above Mammoth, and the Apex Standard mine just south of Dividend. The occurrence of ore through the district is typically in lenses on bedding or breaks, and in connecting pipes, without accurate geometrical trend so that the ratio between the total length of development in drifts and crosscuts to the square feet of ore exposed is very high. A section of one of the western channels (Fig. 1) through the Tintic district, shows, roughly, the irregularities calling for excessive development work, so typical of the Tintic mines. This irregular trend of the ore constantly calls for excessive cutting up of the whole area for offshoots and the connecting links always present. In the planning of prospecting and development, no regular system may be laid out without overlooking some orebodies or segments of orebodies. It was with these facts in mind that Cecil Fitch, the general manager of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., decided that some method of drilling was the more feasible way of successfully cutting up and bringing about the discovery of ore believed to exist; yet this drilling had to compete with a great margin of cost over crosscutting, as a crosscut in the Tintic district, even though barren, brings out geologic facts that, in many cases, are worth the price of the working itself. Diamond drills met with the success that might be expected in a district that has a reputation for the Gear and loss of diamonds; after 6 or 8 months, this method was discarded on account of the high costs. Simultaneously, a small churn drill outfit was set up underground but a few shifts proved its inapplicability. At the same time, the ordinary hammer drill was used to drive prospect holes with jointed steel. Just what equipment to develop for this work with the hammer drill involved much experimenting, as nothing was found in the literature

Nickel and carbon form a metastable nickel-nickel carbide eutectic system which was ohsen)able by freezing latent-heat arvests at pressures 210 khars. The eutectic freezing temperature Is pressure had a slope of -0.9°Cper kbar. At 50 khars, the nickel-nickel carbide eutectic was at 1297° * 5°C and 0.34 mole fraction Ni3C. The composition of the eutectic increased at an initial rate of 0.004 mol fraction per kbar. The carbon content of the a phase also increased with pressure. Seveval illustrations of nickel carbide microstruc-tures are given and data on the lattice expansion of nickel in terms of carbon content are included. IRON, cobalt, and nickel form a variety of carbides with compositions varying between MeC and MC. Of the three, the carbides of iron are most easily recovered. The nickel carbides are so unstable at temperatures above 900°C that their occurrence in Ni-C alloys is unusual. Under sufficient pressure, however, the temperature range for the stability of the ferrous metal carbides is likely to be increased, or their decomposition suppressed (e.g., see Hilliard' on FesC), providing an opportunity to study the unstable carbides more closely. This was found to be true for nickel carbide which, under pressure, formed a eutectic with nickel. This paper describes the conditions of formation of nickel-nickel carbide eutectic compositions and their subsequent recovery. Despite the comparative instability of the nickel carbides, something is already known about them through various chemical reactions at temperatures not exceeding a few hundred degrees, and from their recovery by the very rapid quenching of molten Ni-C alloys from temperatures of about 1450°C or above. At least four carbides of nickel have been reported: A discussion of the state of knowledge about Ni3C is given by ansen.' The studies of Morrogh and williams7 who obtained Widmanstatten nickel carbide structures and of sidorenko8 who first obtained nickel carbide eutectic structures are also of interest. Sidorenko used short heating times for molten nickel in a graphite crucible followed by very rapid quenching to obtain the eutectic structures. Long heating times produced only the nickel-graphite eutectic probably due to the presence of graphite crystals in the melt which nucleated graphite crystallization. According to the early work summarized by anssen,' nickel carbide may form at temperatures far above the melting point and may be recovered by very rapid quenching. More recently, Giardini and Tydings, working on diamond synthesis, found evidence for "free nickel carbide'' in high-pressure reactions carried to temperatures far in excess of the limit for diamond growth, followed by rapid thermal quench. They stated that nickel carbide was not found in association with diamond growth. In the present work, observations were made on the melting and solidification temperatures of Ni-C alloys as a function of composition, temperature, and pressure. The nickel-nickel carbide eutectic was found at pressures above 10 kbar and its variation with pressure followed up to 60 kbar. Nickel-nickel carbide microstructures were recovered by quenching under pressure from temperatures of about 1400°C and higher. The formation of nickel carbide structures under ordinary diamond-growing conditions was usually observed but the role of carbide formation as an intermediate step in diamond growth needs more study. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The melting and solidification temperatures of various nickel-graphite compositions were observed by latent-heat arrests in the sample holder illustrated in Fig. 1. The samples were composed of mixtures of carbonyl nickel powder and National Carbon Co.'s SP-1 graphite packed to densities of about 6.4 g per cu cm. They were contained within

Recent work indicates that fluosilicate ions and or fluosilicate amine complex ions play important roles in fluoride activation of bery and feldspars in cationic flotation systems. In an attempt to further confirm conclusions reached in this earlier work, an infrared and X-ray diffraction study of the action of fluorides in cationic flotation of silicates was undertaken. It should be noted that in recent years considerable use has been made of infrared spectroscopy in studies of surface phenomena,2-4 and these studies have established the excellence of the technique. In the present study infrared spectra were obtained for various products of the reaction of HF and dode-cyclamine hydrochloride with quartz, microcline and beryl. These spectra were compared with one another and spectra of several inorganic and organic substances. In addition to infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns were run on many of the reaction products obtained. A model 137 B Perkin Elmer Infracord double beam spectrophotometer containing sodium chloride optics was used to obtain the spectra. Infrared samples, except for the dodecylamine sample, were prepared by thoroughly mixing the substance to be analyzed with purified KBr in steel vessels on a Wig-L-Bug amalgamator. One-half in. pellets weighing 100 mg were than pressed under vacuum. Details concerning percentage of the substance to be analyzed in the pellets are indicated on the spectra. In all cases except for dodecylamine a KBr pellet was placed in the reference beam of the spectrophotometer to cancel bands due to possible impurities in the KBr. The dodecylamine sample on which an infrared spectrum was obtained was prepared by placing pure dodecylamine between two salt plates. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained with a Norelco instrument, using a copper target tube, nickel filter and Geiger tube detector. The samples were ground into powders and either placed on glass slides with glue or placed into regular powder sample holders for diffraction studies. Goniometer scanning speed varied from 1°/min to 1/8°/min. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Infrared spectra of microcline, beryl and quartz were obtained first and are shown in Fig. 1. These spectra agree reasonably well with previously reported spectra.5,6 The microcline (Fig. 1 a) and beryl (Fig. 1 b) were from good Black Hills crystals. The quartz (Fig. 1 c) was from a large, clear Brazilian crystal. It is not clear whether absorption bands of minerals are due to molecular vibrations, lattice vibrations or both. Fig. 2 shows infrared spectra of dodecylamine (Fig. 2 a) and dodecylamine hydrochloride (Fig. 2 b). The dodecylamine spectrum checks quite closely with that reported in Sadtler.8 Little is known of the spectra of hydrochloride salts of amines,9 and a spectrum of dodecylamine hydrochloride could not be

The chemical action of molten anhydrous pyridinium chloride (pyridine hydrochloride) on oxy salts and ores of some Group IV and V metals are discussed-in particular zirconium, hafnium, niobium (columbium) , and tantalum. Laboratory-scale experiments are described whose results suggest that this reaction might provide a practicable means of converting ores of these metals to the anhydrous metal chlorides. Experimental results are given which provide some insight into the nature of the reactions and some of the compounds which could be present at intermediate stages. The treatment of ores of the more refractory metals is difficult and expensive and often demands the use of gaseous chlorine, hydrogen fluoride, or other reagents which are, if nothing else, expensive and dangerous to use. This situation is, of course, due to the strong metal-oxygen affinity resulting from the high charge and the small size of the metal ion which combine to produce such high lattice energy in the metal oxide as to defeat standard reduction methods. Thus, the characteristic of these metals which leads to one of their most important properties—corrosion resistance—is the main hurdle in obtaining the metal. Many common methods' for treating ores of zirconium and niobium (columbium), for example, proceed as directly as possible to the preparation of anhydrous halides. These halides are purified by now standard processes of solvent extraction, fractional distillation, and so on. This paper reports on preliminary stages in the development of a method of treating these ores—particularly of niobium—so as to prepare the anhydrous, volatile halides by the use of chemical reagents which are much more easily handled than those used at present. CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES The solvent action of aminium halides has been referred to periodically in the literature over several decades. The chemistry of pyridinium chloride has been discussed particularly by Audreith2 and Starke.3 However, since this is not familiar chemistry in its nonaqueous setting, it is perhaps well to point out some general metallurgical principles and applications. One can use, as point of departure, the fact that HC1 dissolved in pyridine is an acid very much the same as aqueous HC1. It thus gives essentially all the reactions of the HC1 with which we are familiar. However, when the ratio of HC1:pyridine reaches 1:l (a ratio far higher than is possible with H2O) the solution becomes solid C5F5NHC1, pyridinium chloride.* Inter- estingly, the acidic properties of HC1 persist in this medium, although they are manifest only in the molten state of the compound. Some typical reactions of divalent metal compounds which we have carried out in our laboratories are the following: 2PyHCl + Zn — (ZnCl2) + H2 + 2Py 2PyHCl + MnO — (MnCl2) + H2O + 2Py 2PyHCl + CuS — (CuCl2) + H2S + 2Py 2PyHCl + CaCO3 — (CaCl2) + H2O + CO2 + 2Py In these equations, the parentheses indicate a solvated compound which in water would be predominantly a hydra ted cation but which in molten PyHCl will more likely be a complex chloro-anion of the type MC14-. Some important physical properties of pyridinium chloride (PyHCl) are given in Table I. One sees from the data in Table I that at the temperature of molten pyridinium chloride both water and pyridine will boil away. Thus the system will be kept anhydrous. For this reason the reaction 2NbCl5 + 5H2O— Nb2O5 + 10HC1 has no counterpart in molten PyHCl. Instead, the chloride is made even more stable by the formation of a hexachloro complex: Nb2O5 + 12PyHC1 — 2PyHNbC16 + 5H2O + 10Py One interesting property of these complexes is their thermal instability which for the case of niobium can be illustrated as PyHNbCl6 — PyHCl + NbCl5 With a view to possible use of this chemistry in ore treatment, we have attempted to dissolve Pyrochlore (essentially FeO - Nb2O5) and recover the NbC15 from it.

OWING to the large area included in the Yellow Pine mining district, and the-varied nature of its mineral deposits, a detailed geological description of the district could be covered only in an extensive monograph. This paper is intended as a description of the most prominent geologic features only with special reference to those of economic importance. The first mention of the district was in 1903 by J. E. Spurr,1 who briefly describes the structural geology of the Spring Mountain range. In 1906, H. F. Bain2 briefly described the Potosi mine. James J. Hill,3 of the United States Geological Survey, visited the district for a brief period in 1912, the result of which is an excellent reconnaissance report, covering the district in some detail but necessarily with brevity. Since that time, articles covering special features of the district have appeared in the technical press, including some by the writer, and a notable description of the Boss mine, by Adolph Knopf,4 appeared in 1915. Development of the district during the past few years has progressed so rapidly and with so many notable discoveries, particularly with reference to the rare metals, that a further description at this time may prove of interest. The writer's acquaintance with the district is based on 7 years' continuous residence in the vicinity, beginning with the spring of 1910.

Preliminary investigations based on the concept of cross-power indicate that quantitative volume percentages of minerals, including quartz, orthoclase, plagioclase, fluorite, and chalcopyrite can be obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis. Pulverized samples are scanned from 4° to 65°, 2e, using a Norelco diffractometer, with the output recorded on a punched tape at 40 intervals per degree, 29. Errors from crystal orientation are minimized by (1) gridded surface packing, (2) sample spinning, and (3) quantitative measurement of all major diffraction peaks. Computer programming enables rapid quantitative evaluation of X-ray diffraction data. Results to date indicate that most minerals analyses can be performed within an accuracy of ±2%. Metallurgical applications include analysis of various flotation concentrates and tailings.
