SILICIDE coatings on refractory metals are often applied by transporting a silicon halide vapor to a hot metal surface where dissociation or hydrogen reduction occurs. The subsequent chemical reaction to produce the coating requires diffusion of silicon or the refractory metal through the in situ silicide layer. This solid-state diffusion process step is often slower than the vapor-transport step and, therefore, rate controlling. This situation is analogous to the parabolic oxidation of metals in which the oxidation rate is controlled by diffusion through the oxide layer. The purposes of this study were to 1) measure the rate of formation of MoSiz and MoSi2 coatings under conditions such that the silicide diffusion process is rate controlling and lower silicide compounds are not formed and 2) determine by a marker experiment whether silicon or the respective refractory metals are the principal diffusing species in the disilicides.

A technique is described which simplifies the standard procedure for measuring the Bond work index of a specific ore and illustrates how to overcome the strict requirements regarding feed size distribution normally encountered in operating plants. Actual results obtained from various process streams in a copper concentrator are presented and the grindability data are discussed in relation to the observed plant performance. This type of information can be used to gain a better understanding of plant behavior and to assist in the evaluation of plant modifications and process control studies.

IN presenting the medalist, Scott Turner, director of 'the Bureau of Mines, said in part: "Mr. Blaylock is a Canadian by birth, training, ex-perience and preference. He was born in the Province of Quebec, graduated from McGill University in 1899, and immediately thereafter became an employee of the company for which he is now general manager. His outstanding achievements have been the acquisition for his company of the Sullivan mine, and the organization of a metallurgical staff, which, under his leadership and personal direction, solved the difficult problems pre-sented by the extraordinarily complex lead-zinc-silver ores of the Sullivan mine. "By title only, I will suggest to you the high lights of his career: (1) Development, of the great mine at Kimberley, and a huge plant at Trail. (2) Discovery and application of a successful differential flotation process for Sullivan ore which had previously not re-sponded to any process. (3) Improvements in lead-blast-furnace and refinery practice. (4) Development of an electrolytic process for treatment of zinc concen-trates. (5) Development of an electric-furnace-smelt-ing-method for zinc-plant residues. Besides this, we recognize his great organizing ability, his gift of leader-ship, and the cooperative spirit he always displayed.

I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to two deep vertical shafts, which are now being sunk in Schuylkill County, Pennsyl¬vania, about 1 1/2 miles north of Pottsville. These shafts are of interest to the mining engineer, not only on account of the novelty of the method of sinking adopted, which promises to produce a revolution in that branch of mining engineering, but also as examples of the manner in which such work should be undertaken. GEOLOGICAL SKETCH OF THE TERRITORY TO BE WORKED BY THE SHAFTS AND REASON FOR SINKING THEM. The Mammoth or E Vein of the anthracite coal-measures in that part of the Schuylkill region near and north of the town of Pottsville lies at a great depth below the surface, and has, in consequence, never been worked in that locality.

Since I have had the pleasure of watching the development of this process very closely, I feel that I ought to say a few words on the subject, although I cannot add much to what Mr. Roe has already said. I wish, however, to bear witness to the hard work, persistence and skill which have been exercised during the past two years, and which have so well deserved the success attained. Those of us who remember the history of the past efforts in this line, such as the rotary puddlers, in which also some of us had a part, can easily appreciate the problems involved, and may well be skeptical as to the outcome. Such, at least, was my frame of mind when the process first came under my notice. Now, after having seen every heat, but three, of the many made, it really seems to me that a process and plant for the mechanical puddling of iron has at last been developed which is practical, economical and successful. Of course I do not mean by this that either the process or the machines are developed to their highest point, technically or economically, but that, in my opinion, these goals are in plain view, and that the difficulties which remain are such as will be overcome by developing the skill of the operator through practice ;

Flux-Pinning by w precipitates is responsible for the high critical transport currents that were ob- ThE ability of a type II superconductor to sustain a zero-resistance transport current (Jc) in an external magnetic field (H) is due to the presence of micro-structural features which can impede the motion of magnetic flux penetrating the superconductor under the influence of a Lorentz force. Such features are referred to as pinning sites. The pinning strength is tained. A sample cooled from 800°C and annealed 1 hr at 450°C carried a critical tramport current of 10 amp per sq cm at 30 kG. Variations in the current-carrying ability of this alloy are due to changes in its pinning strength which is a function of precipitate density and composition and of the composition of the matrix. the reaction of the bulk superconductor to the Lorentz force and depends on the efficiency of the individual pinning sites and on their volume density. The super -current density increases with pinning strength, other things being equal. The above concepts are discussed in detail in a comprehensive review by Livingston and Schadler.' In Ti-Nb alloys, as in other binary titanium alloys, the metastable hexagonal w phase usually forms below the p/a + p phase boundary near the titanium side of the phase diagram. Hydraulic fracturing in rock masses involves complex and coupled processes of fractures propagating in discontinuous media and of fluid flow in discrete channels. The Unconventional Gas Program at LLNL is actively developing numerical models to gain insight in the physics of these coupled processes. This paper describes the current status of the FEFFLAP code, which models fluid-driven discrete fracture propagation in jointed media. We also discuss the results of a preliminary series of physical tests in which hydrofractures were driven across slanted interfaces between dissimilar materials, in blocks loaded in biaxial compression.

MOST mineral products are used in the finely divided state, but some are sold in larger sizes. Coal, gravel, metallurgical fluorspar, phosphate rock, hematite, chromite, and other products are sold in sizes coarser than can be treated by many mineral-dressing methods. Gravity separation of coarser sizes by log washing and jigging is probably as ancient as any process now in use. The performance of jigs on a feed with sufficient difference in density of the minerals is excellent, but many families of minerals are too similar in density to be separated effectively by this method. The use of heavy suspensions of fine solids to separate coarse coal from bone and slate has been in use for some years. This separation by sink-and-float was limited until recently to light minerals. Development of galena and ferrosilicon as suspension media, by Minerals Beneficiation, Inc., at Mascot, Tenn., Pitcher, Okla., and Crosby, Minn., under patents granted during and since 1938, has permitted excellent results to be obtained on minerals of very similar densities up to 3.3. This process has been put in the hands of American Cyanamid Co. for exploitation, and further research now in progress may increase the density of suspension obtainable so that separations at a density of 4.0 may be practicable before this is published. The Huntington-Heberlein dense-medium process, developed in England, is also being commercialized in the United States by Sink and Float Corporation. Du Pont has developed a sink-and-float separation using halogenated hydrocarbons as parting liquids; at this writing, the method is used commercially only on coal but has been successful in the pilot plant on many other minerals using tetrabromethane at densities up to 2.95. While these processes were being developed to extend the range of separation by difference in density to the coarser sizes, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in developing a process that will extend the range of separation by difference in wettability up to 2-in. size. War work has pushed aside its further development indefinitely. The results are published here with the hope that some use may be suggested that will justify post-war development, and so that readers that may be able to make immediate use of the scheme may have the information. The purpose of the following research, as originally planned, was to investigate the influence of temperature upon the plate-amalgamation process. In order to consider the amalgamation process intelligently, it was first necessary to learn the nature of an amalgam. In the performance of this task it was found necessary to consult a large volume of literature and to perform experimental investigations. The conceptions of the nature of amalgams thus obtained have so important a bearing on the amalgamation-process as a whole, as well as upon the possible influences of temperature, that it was advisable to include them in the treatment of the subject. The broader title is therefore used, even though some features of the amalgamation process have been treated very briefly and others entirely omitted, there being nothing new to present regarding them and their development not required for a clear presentation of the matter in hand. I. Historical Introduction. Gold was one of the earliest metals known to man. Occurring in the metallic state, it could be picked up in nuggets or mashed, as gold dust, from the sand and gravel of streams. Interestiag descriptions of the processes employed in early times for the recovery of gold may be found in Pliny's Natural History and in the treatise by Agricola on ores and minerals. But little progress in the treatment of the ores of gold mas possible until efficient crushing machines were devised. The effect of transition element binary solid-solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of vanadium has been investigated. Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo, Ru, Rh, Os, and IY lower the recrystallization temperature, while Ti, Mn, Zr, Cb, Pd, Hf, Ta, W, Re, and Pt raise it. The majority of elements have their greatest effect in less than 0.15 at. pet. Both the rate of change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute and the limit of initial linearity are found to Correlate with the free atom grozdnd state outer electron configuration of the sollte element. THE work of Abrahamson and Grant1 and Abraham-son and Blakeney2 has shown that the solute's elec- tron configuration appears to be a prime determinant of both brittle-to-ductile transition and recrystallization temperature in dilute binary alloys. It has also been shown by Abrahamson3 that the limit of linearity, i.e., the limit of initial linear change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute, is also a function of the electron configuration of the solute in iron base alloys. Because of the systematic nature of the solute electron configuration correlation, it is to be expected that some systematic variation might be observed upon changing the solvent. Thus, this study of recrystallization in vanadium base alloys is the first of a series aimed at defining the role played by the electron configuration of solute in determining the recrystallization characteristics of dilute transitional alloys. The existence of natural gas-springs in Pennsylvania and the adjoining States west of the crest of the Allegheny Mountains was known to the earliest settlers. Possibly the first gas obtained from a well was at Fredonia, Chautauqua County, N. Y., where a well was sunk on the bank of Canadaway Creek, near the Main Street bridge, in 1821, and sufficient gas obtained for 30 burners, the inn having been illuminated by the gas when General Lafayette passed through the village about 1821. In 1858 another well was drilled, which supplied 200 burners. A still larger one was drilled to a depth of 1200 feet in 1871. According to Mr. E. J. It is deMonstrated that quenching from an elevated temperataupe accelerates the grain boundary relaxation in two solid solutions (aAg-Zn and a Cu-Al). This result is consistent with the proposal that, in solid solutions, grain boundary relaxation occurs by a mechanism of' self diffusion. Nevertheless, an alternative possibilitg, that quenching introduces vacancies into the boundary itself, must also be considered. THE phcnomenon of grain boundary relaxation has been well known for many years,1,2 yet the mechanism of this process is very poorly understood. One of the most interesting suggestions which relates to the mechanism of grain boundary relaxation was that of Ke,3 who claimed that the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation and for lattice self diffusion were essentially the same. The implication is therefore that the elementary step in the two processes is the same. This suggestion is particularly startling in view of the fact that activation energy for self diffusion along a grain boundary is very significantly lower than that for volume self-diffusion. Later evidence5-7 showed that there really are two grain boundary peaks, one which appears in high-purity metals, and the other (which develops at a higher temperature than the first) which appears in solid solutions beginning at solute concentrations in the range of 0.1 pct. Data for silver6 show that Kg's hypothesis is surely incorrect for the grain boundary peak in the high-purity metal, since it has an activation energy of only 22 kcal per mole, but that the hypothesis may still be correct for the grain boundary peak in various silver solid solutions, for which activation energies in the range 40 to 50 kcal per mole are observed. If the elementary step in the grain boundary relaxation process were the same as that for self-diffusion, it would be expected that the relaxation process could be hastened by quenching, 2.c. by introducing a non-equilibrium excess of lattice vacancies. Such a quenching effect has already been demonstrated in the case of another anelastic relaxation process, viz., the Zener relaxation effect. The Zener effect, which occurs in essentially all solid solutions, may be attributed to the reorientation of pairs of solute atoms in the presence of an applied shear stress,' and therefore must take place by means of a volume diffusion mechanism. The hastening of this process through quenching9 has been one way of demonstrating that atom movements in the lattice take place through a defect mechanism, presumably single vacancies. In order to see if the grain boundary relaxation is affected by quenching, it is particularly convenient to compare the grain boundary relaxation with the Zener effect, by choosing a specimen for which both relaxation effects appear. Specifically, a fine-grained sample of a solid solution shows in the curve of internal friction vs temperature, first a peak due to the Zener effect, then a second rise (and eventually a peak at substantially higher temperatures) due to the grain boundary relaxation. The same phenomena are also observable in static anelastic measurements, such as creep at very low stress levels. Thus, for the same fine-grained solid solution, the creepstrain, when plotted against log time, falls on a sigmodial curve with a sharp inflection point, due to the Zener effect, which is followed by a second rise and inflection resulting from the grain boundary relaxation. To look for a quenching effect, static measurements are preferable to the dynamic internal friction measurements, due to the fact that quenching effects tend to anneal out too rapidly at the temperatures at which the internal friction is measured.9 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Creep experiments in torsion were carried out in an apparatus similar to that described by Ke1, whereby a wire is held under constant torque and its angular displacement is observed as a function of time. The alloy Ag-30 at. pct Znwas selected because of the large Zener relaxation that it displays. The two samples used were a "coarse grained" wire with a mean grain size about twice the diameter of the wire (diam = 0.032 in.), and a "fine-grained" wire which had several grains across the diameter. In Fig. 1 a comparison is made of the creep curves at 160°C of these two samples after they had been cooled slowly from 400°C. Curve A, which represents the coarsegrained sample, shows a unique relaxation process due to the Zener relaxation, with a relaxation time, T , in the vicinity of 100 sec. Curve B, which represents the behavior of the fine-grained sample, on the other hand, shows first the same relaxation process as that in A, followed by a turning up of the curve which corresponds to the onset of a second overlap-

The recovery properties of compression-deformed lithium fluoride single crystals were investigated as a function of prior strain, annealing time, and annealing temperature. The recovery process was studied by observation of etch pits and birefringence stress patterns. The recovery process involved first a redistribution of the dislocations and then a decrease in their number. Only by annealing at high temperatures after small strains (<0.02 in. per in.) was it possible to obtain complete recovery of mechanical properties. LITHIUM fluoride affords unusual opportunities to extend the knowledge of deformation mechanisms of nonmetallic crystalline compounds. Single crystals of high purity are readily available. These crystals deform by slip on the (110) <110> system.&apos; Unlike those of several other ionic crystals, the stress-strain curves of annealed lithium fluoride are reproducible.2 Dislocations generated in the crystals during deformation can be revealed by etch pits.3 This fact makes possible more detailed studies of mechanisms than is usually the case with metals. Also, because lithium fluoride is transparent, it is possible to follow the recovery process with birefringence stress patterns. It has been shown that with metals an increase in temperature increases the amount of recovery for a given time, and the amount of recovery increases with increasing time at the same temperature.4-6 The yield stress has also been shown to be dependent on the rate of cooling after annealing.&apos; Annealing germanium, a covalent-bond material, at high temperatures after deformation redistributes the dislocations and reduces their number. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the knowledge of recovery properties to an ionic crystal, lithium fluoride. The effect of strain, time, and temperature of recovery on the stress-strain curve was investigated. The recovery process was followed by observations of etch pits and birefringence stress patterns. THE problem of the equilibrium between iron, carbon, and oxygen was first carefully investigated by E. Baur and A. Glaessner,1 who determined the equilibrium conditions of the two reactions Fe304 + CO ? 3FeO + C02 (1) FeO + CO ? Fe + C02 (2) within the range of temperature of 350 to 900° C. The next series of investigations was made by R. Schenck and his co-workers,2 who sought to check the results of Baur and Glaessner&apos;s work within the range of 550° to 700° C. and to elucidate the conditions of formation of iron carbide. The equilibrium conditions at the higher temperatures, however, are generally understood to be much more complicated, owing chiefly to the formation of solid solutions between iron, its oxides, and carbide; nevertheless their determination is of much more practical importance than those at the lower temperatures. It is well known that each of the reactions is reversible; equilibrium is established when the partial pressure of oxygen in the gaseous phase has become equal to the dissociation pressure of magnetic oxide in equation 1 and that of ferrous oxide in equation 2. These equilibria are subsequently designated by "the Fe304-FeO equilibrium" and "the FeO-Fe equilibrium," respectively. As the Fe304-FeO equilibrium has three phases with three components, it must be bivariant. But the reaction involves no pressure change in the gaseous phase, hence the final composition of the latter is practically unaffected by pressure. To know, the equilibrium conditions, the compositions of the gaseous phase at different temperatures must be determined. At the higher temperature, however, iron and its oxides dissolve one another in various proportions forming solid solutions; in many cases the content of oxygen in the solid phase becomes a new independent variable.

The subject of this paper will be treated as briefly as possible under the following heads : I. The latest designs of some of the machinery used at these collieries in the preparation of coal. 11. The means employed for elevating, conveying and transporting the coal and slate in and about the breaker. 111. The means employed for raising the coal from the mines to the top of the breaker. IV. The iron breaker as a structure. V. The preparation of the coal as effected in the iron breaker. A key to the plates and the letters and numbers designating different parts, will be found at the end of the paper. I. Preparing Coal. Anthracite coal as it comes from the mines is not marketable. The "run of mine" cannot, as in the case of bituminous coal, be sold. Anthracite, being very compact and practically free from volatile combustible matter, burns only at the surface, and it is, therefore, deemed important to have the lumps as nearly of a uniform size as possible, so that between them a large amount of surface will remain exposed to the action of the air without checking the draught too much, or allowing enough air to pass to cool the coal below the ignition-point, In other words, if the pieces of coal of the size of a chestnut and smaller are mixed with lumps of the size of an egg they fill the air-passages and prevent a free draught. It has long been recognized, therefore, that one of the most important points in preparation is to have a uniform sizing, and also to make as large a number of different sizes as can be produced without too

R. W. NEWCOMB,* New York, N. Y. (written discussiont).-On page 1638 mention is made of a new -instrument with an exceptionally high resistance that has been developed by Charles Engelhard. All friction and wear of moving parts of the moving system has been elimi-nated by replacing the hardened steel pivots and jeweled bearings, commonly used on other instruments, by a double metallic filament, one at the top and One at the bottom, under slight tension. Any pos-sible distortion of the moving coil, because of tension, has been eliminated by introducing a solid spindle as the axis of the coil between the points on the coil where the metallic filament is attached. The filaments serve not only as a support for the moving coil; but also to lead in the current from the binding posts to the moving coil, and as a source of counter-torque; instruments so constructed, do not require leveling, and are mechanically very robust. The clock of the recorder serves only to drive the chart at its specified rate and -to operate a small contact-making device; i.e., there is no other mechanical load on the clockworks. The contact-making de-vice is so constructed that there is a quick-make, a quick-break, and a wiping effect while the contact is being made. Contact surfaces on this switch are of platinum platinum-iridium. The operation of this contact, which occurs once each minute, sends a current, from a 6-volt supply; through a solenoid magnet, which operates the depressor bar mechanism in the case of the single-record instrument; in the case of the multiple-record instrument, it operates the automatic switch and color-changing features, as well as the depressor bar.

To the members of the A. I. M. E., who have given much and risked all to fight "Over There" with pick, or gun, or brain, and to the members who have chosen the sometimes more self-denying duty of remaining at home to help produce metals for fighters: Your experience in foreign lands has bred in you that spirit of internationalism which will soon be infused into every corner of our country by virile lads thrilling from a great experience in an old, yet new, land over the seas. To them the East will not seem as far from the West as it was, nor the North from the South. Sectional jealousies will seen despicable to one who has fought for a great ideal shoulder to shoulder with real men of other nations. And they who have willingly sacrificed much on the altar of service will have little patience with an egotist, be he laborer, tradesman, capitalist or engineer. The problems which peace brings to us are more difficult than those of war and their solution requires not only cool heads, tolerance, and wise judgment, but the "getting together" of sections and classes and individuals. The triumph of justice over individualism, represented by the draft law, must be repeated, for there are "slackers" in peace Is well as in war, and the spirit of self-denial expressed in response to Liberty Loans, Red Cross, and Welfare drives and Food Administration appeals must live. We have only just begun to learn how to serve. It is often claimed by our members that the engineer is not given, in the community at large, the recognition which his training should merit; that his reward is not as great nor his service as welcome as it should be. The electro-magnetic separator of Mr. G. Conkling, Glens Falls, N. Y., described by Mr. Birkinbine* in a paper at the New York meeting of the Institute, in February, 1889, has been in successful operation at the Tilly Foster &apos;mine for a considerable period, under the disadvantages which seem to be the inevitable attendants of pioneer enterprises in new technical fields. The results of a run of several months, which the Superintendent, Mr. S. P. Tomkins, has taken pains to collate, are here presented by his courteous permission, and that of Mr. E. S. Moffat, the energetic and skilful General Manager of the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company, to whom our profession is already indebted for examples of bold and ingenious practice in mine-engineering. It is believed that these figures will assist those who are planning similar operations to decide intelligently what they may, and, more important still, what they may not, expect to accomplish. The local difficulties in the way of this experiment at the Tilly Foster mine were many and great. Only about two-thirds of the waste-dump, resulting from the assorting of previous years, is ore; and this varies in content of iron from 20 to 28 per cent. The remainder is rock, some (from horses in the vein) showing particles of adhering mineral, some (from the foot- and hanging-walls) entirely barren. The expense of overhauling the dump and removing this rock is by no means the least of the numerous items which must be charged against the concentration. Joseph E. Thropp, Jr., Indiana Harbor, Ind.:—To what do you attribute the fact that in some localities the by-product coke sells at a premium over the ordinary bee-hive coke for foundry use ? If the cell-structure is preferably soft and rather thick in coke for foundry use, as I understand it, do you mean that by-product coke has soft and thick cell-walls ? William H. Blauvelt, Syracuse, N. Y.:—As I say in one of the paragraphs of my paper, the tendency seems to be towards the manufacture of foundry- and furnace-coke under somewhat different conditions. The development of the best cell-structure in coke, of course, has not reached perfection, but we are making progress, and we are inclined to believe that under ordinary conditions the best furnace-coke, that is, coke with the hard cell-wall and the well-developed cell, is produced at fast coking-time and high heats, whereas the best foundry-coke seems to be produced at somewhat lower heats. In one of our plants we are making furnace-coke in 16-hr. coking-time, and foundry-coke in 20-hr. time. Foundry-men want the strong, tough coke. I think the furnace-men present will agree that the best furnace-practice requires a hard coke, with a well-developed cell-structure. Replying to the question as to the reason for higher prices being realized for by-product foundry-coke than for bee-hive coke, of course, the immediate reason is that it suits the foundry-men better. Perhaps one cause may be that we are able, by the selection of coals, which is not usually practicable at bee-hive plants, to get a quality and analysis best suited to foundry-work, with high carbon-content, and with cell-structure and physical strength especially suited to the foundry-men&apos;s ideas.
