There were present twelve- Directors, the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and fifteen guests. A committee of three was appointed to draft a suitable resolution of memorial of the services of Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr. The committee consists of Joseph W. Richards, Chairman, J. V. N. Dorr and Allen H. Rogers. William R. Walker was elected a Director in place of J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Edwin Ludlow was elected a member of the Executive Committee in his stead. George C. Stone was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Membership in place of Mr. Johnson. The following resolutions were then adopted: RESOLVED, That a special business meeting of the Institute be and the same hereby is appointed to be, held at the office of the Institute, No. 29 West 39th Street, Borough of Manhattan, City of New York, on the 27th day of June, 1919, it 8.30 o'clock in the P. M. to consider and take action upon the proposal to change the name of the Institute to "American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Incor-porated," and the further proposal to extend the corporate purposes of the Institute so that it shall, in addition to its other powers, be empowered to promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of, those employed in these industries, by all lawful means.

THE completion of the excavation of the tunnels through Bergen Hill for the extension of the Pennsylvania Railroad into New York City, together with the fact that the excavation for the rest of the tunnel-line has been practically completed for some time past, arouses sufficient interest to justify a description of the engineering- and contracting-work, and the organization by which it has been accomplished. The finishing of the excavation is a long step towards the completion of the entire tunnel-project. It will be interesting to the members of the Institute, who last spring were taken through a great part of this work, to know that by the excavation now completed it is possible to walk by tunnel from a, point near Sunnyside yard, Long Island, east of the 34th Street ferry, to the central passenger station site in the City of New York, and thence by tunnel to the Hackensack meadows, and by an embankment constructed across these meadows to Newark, N. J. This New York tunnel extension is being constructed as a part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system by the Pennsylvania Tunnel & Terminal R. R. Co., a corporation of the States of New Jersey and New York. It extends from a point near Newark, N. J., to the Sunnyside yard, Long Island, as indicated on the accompanying plan.

§ 1 Introduction.—This paper gives the results of our micro-graphic determinations of the position of Ae3 in a series of 14 hypo-eutectoid steels of varying carbon content, one of them very rich in phosphorus, and of SEe for one hyper-eutectoid steel. We have proceeded chiefly by noting the temperature at which the reabsorption of the pro-eutectoid element is found to be complete after a 30-min. holding, but in part also by noting the temperature at which its precipitation begins. Observations on these same steels by Messrs. Burgess, Crowe, and Rawdon, of the United States Bureau of Standards, are given in a paper1 issued simultaneously with this, while in a third paper2 one of us compares these data with those of earlier observers. These three papers are treated as one whole by numbering their sections, tables, and illustrations continuously, and by setting the folding plates of micrographs at the end of the last paper. The Composition of the Steels Experimented On is given in Table I. § 2. Notalion and Definitions.—Following Osmond's development of Tschernoff's notation, in which " Ac3 " is the upper limit of the hypo-eutectoid part of the transformation range as observed in heating up, and " Ar3 " is that same limit as observed in cooling down, and following the usual custom of calling the upper limit of the hyper-eutectoid part of that range " SE," we may go farther and call this latter limit " SEc" when observed in heating up and " SEr " when observed in cooling down. To modern civilization the platinum metals are of inestimable value. Their distinctive properties, both physical and chemical, render them indispensable in an age in which the processes of the laboratory are becoming an essential part of the daily life of the world. Generally, their function, though vital to particular processes, is not spectacular, and so remains unknown to all except the operators. Early Methods of Manufacture The properties of platinum were recognized as of prime importance for scientific work at a very early date, probably between 1750 and 1760. The difficulty of making articles from it seemed almost insurmountable, because no means of attaining the temperature necessary to melt it were known at that time. It is true that solid platinum could be obtained by fusing the metal with a more volatile metal such as arsenic, which was subsequently driven off by baking, but such a method, at its best, would give only a very brittle product, which was totally unsuitable for the purposes for which it was intended. Little, if any, progress could be made until it was discovered that platinum sponge, heated to white heat and hammered in an iron or clay mold, would metallize and retain the shape of the mold. This was a process that could not be wholly satisfactory but from it developed the method of pressing the sponge in a mold and forging it at white heat into wire or sheet. At present a somewhat similar process must be used for fabricating articles of tungsten, molybdenum and other metals of high fusing point, as with these metals we face today the same problems that the scientists of the eighteenth century encountered with platinum, but possibly the next significant advance in the metallurgy of these metals will be the devising of means to melt and cast them. TO some extent this method of preparing platinum has survived, particularly in Europe. There are one or two objections to it, but they are not serious, as they can be surmounted with proper precautions. In the first place, the material is spongy and its millions of cavities contain entrapped air. Unless this is removed by thorough forging above 1000" C. the resultant sheet shows blisters. It was thought that even though much was to be desired regarding the amount and accuracy of the information on the old Trenton field, it was too important to be left out. We trust that we are not perpetuating any of the inaccuracies that are to be found in the data for Indiana.

NO physical impairment can be more serious than the partial or complete loss of sight. With reasonably good eyesight, a person is equipped to care for life and I limb, provided a rational measure of t caution is manifested. When the sight of one eye is lost or badly impaired, one-half of this God-given asset is gone, and extreme care must be taken to prevent the tragedy of total darkness that closes out the beauty of sky, field and mountain, the faces of relatives and friends, and either removes entirely or in part one's capacity to produce and earn. During 1933, The Union Pacific Coal Co., operating ten coal mines in Wyoming, decided to undertake a visual survey of all of its mine operating officials and employees. Although the cost of workmen's compensation paid because of eye injuries was material, the management was more deeply concerned with the social loss and the suffering resulting from the many eye injuries. As every element of coal production cost must be scrutinized, accurate data on all accidents, with the workmen's compensation paid therefor, are carried forward monthly. The number of accidents to eyesight and the resultant compensation paid are shown in Table 1 for nine calendar years:

Emphasis on publications related to coal mining subsidence and damages is appropriate at present in view of the energy crisis and increased coal production and public alertness. I have worked in Harrisburg with the state government Public Utilities Commission on energy-fuel matters and issues (Parate, 1978-80). I have participated in the communication on subsidence/ damage reviews and status with the Bureau of Mines Liasion Office (Kebblish, 1978-79). I have done research (Parate, 1965) and published papers (Parate, 1972; Parate, 1967) in Britain on coal mining subsidence and damages around Sheffield-Nottinghamshire coal fields. I have a few comments on the recent paper titled, "Pennsylvania Subsidence Control Guidelines," by C.J. Bise. 1) What is the basis of the empirical formula or guideline, LD _ (0.27 x D) ± 4.6, defining the support area? 2) The particular structure may not be damaged due to vertical uniform displacement caused by mining beneath unless the displacement is differential (King, 1964). 3) The author mentions the limited subsidence research in the US, and quite rightly so. But he fails to quote any work reference by continental investigators except the British or review work by the US. What are the reasons? 4) The author has not mentioned the importance and role of angle of draw for Pennsylvania, Kentucky, or Illinois coal fields. Is there any current research investigation on the relationship between subsidence research investigation, damage, and transference of strains to structures? There have been a number of newspaper reports on subsidence damage in Wilkesbarre and other areas in Pennsylvania. Is the author aware of such instances and traditional attitudes to such issues? Many times government agencies--due to lack of funds, technical expertise, and public policies--are unable or do not find it interesting to keep updates on these issues, as per the author's knowledge and experience with state governments. 5) What is the net effect and role of the D.E.R. Insurance Office on the monitoring, reducing, or controlling subsidence damage, particularly in Pennsylvania?

THE growing dependence of our vast industrial civilization (:n mineral products demands today, as never before, the highest technical skill in those who produce these product-;. That the duty of training the engineers, whose responsibility it is to produce these mineral products efficiently and in sufficient amount, falls directly on the schools of mining is beginning to be more fully recognized. The Institute, realizing this fact and that its future membership depends largely on the annual accretion of young men, is showing a keen interest in the problems of the mining schools and in the work of its Committee on Engineering Education. The Committee has, during the past several years, considered the problems connected with the training of men for the mineral industry, whether these have been problems of college training, or placement of the young engineer in the industry, or personnel training after he enters the industry. The field of interest and discussion has been as broad and varied as the mineral industry itself. Coal mining, metal mining and metallurgy have been discussed and the papers on these subjects have been outstanding contributions to the literature on mineral education.

The effects of variations of carbon content on the constitution and properties of sintered WC-Co alloys were studied. The grain growth of tungsten carbide during sintering was measured and it was shown that it takes place mainly by solution and reprecipitation of the carbide in and from the binder at the sintering temperature. It was found that the decomposition of W3C03C by carburization during sintering is responsible for the formation of very large grains. THE properties of sintered WC-Co alloys are critically dependent upon their final composition and structure. Slight changes of cobalt and carbon contents and small variations of grain size result in marked changes of mechanical properties and performance of products. Previous investigators have studied the microstructure as a function of composition' and have dealt with the influence of cobalt upon properties.' The present work is concerned with the effect of carbon content upon constitution, microstructure, and grain growth during sintering, as well as upon the physical properties of sintered compacts. Phase Boundaries at the Sintering Temperature The WC-Co section through the ternary diagram W-Co-C has been studied by Wyman and Kelley,' Takeda,V andford and Trent," and Rautala and Norton." Two phases, namely WC and a cobalt-rich solid solution (P), appear in the sintered structure if the carbon composition corresponds very nearly to the theoretical carbon content of WC (6.12 pct C). But small deviations from the ideal carbon content will bring about the occurrence of either graphite or the double carbide W,Co3C (7) . The 7 phase was long believed to be metastable, this conclusion being based mainly on the work of Takeda. More recent studies have shown that it is a stable phase of the ternary system,"5 but the actual phase boundaries have not been established and there has been some discussion as to whether or not the 7 phase occurs at some stage of sintering in the fully carburized alloys." In view of this uncertainty it was thought advisable to undertake an investigation of the phases present during the sintering of WC-Co alloys. Commercially available tungsten, cobalt, and carbon powders were used in the present study. A typical analysis of impurities in a sintered compact is reported in Table I. The desired carbon compositions were attained by varying the amount of carbon added to the tungsten during carburization and controlling the composition during sintering by packing the compacts into beds of mixed alundum-carbon powders of suitably selected ratios. The alloys were sintered in a hydrogen tube furnace at 1400°C, then brought to equilibrium at the temperature under investigation and quenched in water. The high temperature phases were identified by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. The samples were etched with a 10 pct solution of alkaline potassium ferricyanide. The phase boundaries, established by metallo-graphic examination, are shown in Fig. 1, which is a vertical section through the ternary diagram at 16 pct Co. The temperatures of the invariant planes, at 1298" and 1357°C were established by Rautala and Norton. The vertical section shows that the three-phase field, WC + 7 + L, extends into the two-phase field, WC + L, but does not include the stoichiometric composition of WC. The authors present a general outline of the theory and development of heavy-liquid application to mineral processing. Patent literature and processes are reviewed with special emphasis on liquid recovery systems which have been employed or proposed. Advantages and disadvantages of the process are discussed together with the recent developments which have revived interest in this old concentration method. The most important single factor in this resurgence of interest is concluded to be the narrowing gulf between chemical engineering and mineral dressing which has opened the field for new concepts of mineral plant design. A partial summary of patents on heavy liquid separations is included. In spite of the fact that heavy-liquid separation with organic liquids has been used in the laboratory for over 50 years, this process has never graduated to large scale commercial use for any extended period. However, a variation of this process, the sink-float or heavy-media separation process has found wide acceptance and is used to separate minerals from diamonds to gravel. Materials used to increase the specific gravity of the pulps used as heavy media include sand, clay, barite, magnetite, galena, hematite, atomized lead and ferrosilicon. Because of the greater ease of recovery, the magnetic materials, magnetite and ferrosilicon, are the preferred media today. In the U. S. alone, heavy-media iron ore plants with a capacity of over 10 million tons of concentrate per year are in existence. Heavy-media separation involving use of solid, inorganic particles suspended in water rapidly found a wide range of commercial use with the introduction of magnetic media. The minerals engineer is experienced in working with suspensions and quickly learned to develop and control such media at a cost compatible to the type of separation desired. The natural superiority of a heavy liquid with uniform chemical and physical properties has never been questioned since its first use in laboratory mineral separatory procedures. It offers the only method for gravity separation of fine particles of relatively close specific gravity. The most important early attempt to make heavy liquid separations commercial were made by the DuPont Co. which began experimental work on Virginia limonite in 1904. The appended "Partial Summary of Patents" compiled by W.L. O'Connell of The Dow Chemical Co. demonstrates the quantity and sequence of this work. Both inorganic and organic parting liquids were investigated and numerous patents were issued on the use and recovery of these liquids. The work culminated in the heavy liquid plant of the Weston Coal Co. at Shenandoah, Pa. Chemical engineering design of this plant was the responsibility of Francis I. and Hubert I. DuPont. Heavy-liquid separation of coal almost achieved commercial status at this plant which actually processed over 20,000 tons of coal. The liquids used were tetrabromethane, pentachloroethane and trichlo-roethylene, with liquid losses ranging from 8.9 to 12.4 oz per ton of cleaned coal. The reasons for failure of this plant are not clear but probably involved toxicity problems as well as other problems in chemical engineering. Excellent economics were reported. A more recent pilot plant was built in 1954-55 by Norris Goodwin for the Inerto Co. to treat hectorite clay. This plant employed carbon tetrachloride in jigs with liquid recovery by evaporation. Although good separation was achieved, incomplete removal of the CCl, from the clay prevented commercial operation. The only present operations known to the authors employing heavy liquids for gravity separations are limited to the use of calcium chloride in certain coal washers and bromochloromethane in a small batch operation (one ton solids per day) for the separation of beryllium metal particles from slag materials. This is not strictly a minerals beneficiation problem but it has demonstrated the feasibility of such separations. When a dry ball-mill grinding circuit was in- stalled at the pellet plant of Hamersley Iron Pty. Ltd., it was something of a pioneering venture, since this was one of the first instances where such a circuit had been applied to iron ore on a major scale. The Hamersley pellet plant is located in Dampier on the coast of Western Australia. The feed for it consists of -8mm fines produced as a screened product at the Mt. Tom Price mine 186 miles inland from Dampier. It was these fines that encouraged the choice of a dry grinding facility for the plant. At the outset, tests had shown that the fines could not be filtered satisfactorily with a wet grinding system. At the pelletizing plant, the fines are stockpiled, reclaimed, dry ground in ball mills, formed into pellets on balling discs, hardened on an indurating line, and stockpiled for shipment overseas. These operations are shown in Fig. 1.

ONLY in recent years has any practical headway been made in the application of aerial photography to geological problems, and up to the present time its principal value to the geologist and mining engineer has been in "areal geology;" i. e., the study of formations as revealed at the surface. The object of this paper is to set forth briefly the principal advantages that may be derived from aerial photographic data in geological work and to serve in a measure as a guide to those who may be con-templating its use. Geophysical prospecting has for object the locating of mineral under the surface. Inasmuch as the geologist's chief complaint in life is a dual one-inability to see under the surface and inability to visualize comprehensively what he does see on top of the ground-geophysical prospecting coupled with aerial photography should do much to lessen his burdens. To what extent aerial photography can be made a useful adjunct to geophysical prospecting remains to be proved, but the inference drawn here is that it holds many alluring possibilities. To avoid disappointments, it should be stated at the outset that to the :geologist or mining engineer an aerial photograph or mosaic is only a tool, the effecient use of which he must set out to master. Upon his skill and ingenuity in applying it to particular problems will depend largely the value of the results that he will obtain. Under the most favorable conditions an aerial mosaic or even a few loose photographs, because of the exceptionally comprehensive oversight which they afford of field data, such as dips and strike observations at isolated outcrops, local indications of faulting, mineral and fossil finds, greatly facilitate study and correlation, save much tedious foot work, and may repay their cost many times. Even so, types of country may be found where the most, skillful use of the best of pictures will produce results so meager as to render the cost of aerial photography entirely unwarranted.

Cast-iron, or pig-iron, is iron which contains all the carbon that it could absorb during its reduction in the blast-furnace. As is well-known to chemists, carbon exists in cast-iron in two distinct forms. In chemical union, as "combined" carbon, it cannot be discerned, except as it may increase the whiteness of the fracture, in so-called white iron, or carburetted iron (sp. gr. about 7.72). Carbon mechanically mixed with the iron as graphite is visible, varying in color from gray to black, while the fracture of the iron, according to the color and amount of graphite it contains, ranges from a light to a very dark gray. The specific gravity of graphitic iron is about 7.40. Silicon in cast-iron is evidently to some extent combined with the iron and the carbon ; but whether it exists also in a form corresponding with graphitic carbon, mechanically mixed with the remaining mass, is a question still in dispute, which we have not in this paper endeavored to answer. It has been the opinion of many writers on metallurgy, and many foundry men, that silicon is in every way injurious to cast-iron. Yet

Prior to 1934, published information covering expenditures by oil companies for properties, plant, and equipment and the residual investments in the various segments of the petroleum industry was not readily available. This paper presents an analysis of the funds invested by a selected group of oil companies during the years 1934 through 1942, based on an extensive study of the individual records of 30 oil companies. The sources, disposition, and characteristics of the capital employed by this group of companies are traced through a series of combined statements and appropriate charts, covering financial and operating data. The analysis of these statements not only constitutes a record useful for comparative purposes but also serves as a basis for a number of broad conclusions, as follows: 1. The petroleum industry generates the capital needed for its expansion almost entirely from its own operations and is therefore a singularly self-contained economic unit. 2. The long-term debt contained in the financial structure of the industry is small relative to the total capital employed, is less than the net working capital, and has increased but slightly during the period under review. 3. The capital expenditures of the group of 30 oil companies for 9 years amounted to 6.1 billion dollars, 58.3 per cent of which went into crude-oil producing facilities. The trend of this segment of expenditures has been downward since 1937. In 1942, expenditures for refining facilities increased sharply and for marketing facilities declined drastically. 4. The net working capital of the group increased 380 million dollars over the period, and the industry is in a favorable position of liquidity. The ratio of combined current assets to current liabilities was 3.21 at the close of the period. 5. The net income of the group displayed an upward trend for the period but with rather sharp cyclical fluctuations. 6. In 1942, Government funds entered the industry for the first time in substantial amounts and were utilized for the provision of war facilities needed for emergency use. 7. The group has paid out a relatively low percentage of net income in the form of dividends. For the period the average was 55 per cent of net income. 8. The rate of return on invested capital for the group averaged 6.4 per cent for the

The present day success of gravel packs to prevent or retard the migration of unconsolidated sands into the well bore is due to: (I) the use of a saline or non-aqueous, nonsolids drill fluid, (2) proper preparation of the well bore prior to gravel packing, and (3) pressure placement of the gravel. The experience gained from the "pressure pack" method of gravel packing indicates that sand-free fluid production can be maintained for a length of time sufficient to make the operation economically attractive. Data pertaining to the first 15 wells so completed by Gulf indicate that for each dollar spent to effect the completion, there will be a return of more than $2.92. The pressure pack technique of gravel packing is essentially the placing of gravel in and adjacent to the producing formations. This is done with fluid pressure and by the use of a drill fluid that will permit partial or complete loss of returns to the formation during placement. This technique was first intentionally used by Gulf in May, 1950, and since that time has been applied in more than 90 wells. Other advantages claimed for this type of completion are that the pressure placement of the gravel has a scouring effect on the casing perforations, that additional drainage channels to the well bore are created, and that the possibility of shifting of the formations adjacent to the casing is minimized and possibly prevented. During the past few years, the use of gravel to prevent or retard the migration of unconsolidated sands into the well bore has met with a favorable degree of success. Numerous methods and techniques of "gravel packing" have been used, each having its own relative merits, and with varying results. M. L. Cashion1 in 1939 ably reviewed the history of gravel packing to that time. As stated in his paper, ". .. the idea of gravel packing wells is not new." During the period 1939 to 1949, very little if any progress or change in technique in this type of completion was made. However, it was noted in some cases that during the placement of gravel, if there was a loss of drill fluid to the formation, there was a corresponding loss of gravel to the formation. Also, it was noted that in those gravel-packed completions (opposite casing perforations) that "sanded up," there was found to be an absence of gravel in the annular space between the liner and casing, although gravel had previously been placed in this space and no gravel had been removed from the well at the surface. These findings resulted in the placement of gravel with fluid pressure and by the use of a drill fluid that would permit partial or complete loss of returns to the formation during placement. Pressure placement of gravel became an accepted practice in late 1949 and early 1950. Another fact brought to light that has contributed to the current success of gravel pack completions is that drilling fluids containing solids will to some extent cause plugging of the screening medium or blocking of the producing section. In many areas surrounding the orebodies in mining districts rocks have been bleached and altered by the ore-forming solutions and have been oxidized during later weathering processes. A number of the rock-forming silicates have been broken down to clay, sericitic micas and chlorites have been developed, and pyrite may be found hundreds of feet outside the economic limits of the orebody. These halos of altered ground are prime targets used by geologists in many districts to delineate promising sites for drilling. Both in the field and in the laboratory it is often difficult to map these mineralogical changes in the halos in detail without numerous petrologic examinations. The secondary minerals are generally fine-grained, and since conversion of one mineral to another is often progressive, many alteration processes have not proceeded to completion (feldspars to clay to sericite mica). Qualitative detection of these minerals is difficult; quantitative determination is frequently impossible.

Data are presented which indicate that the saturation exponent, n, in the equation, R. = R100S-11, relating core resistivity, I:,. to the resistivity at 100 per cent saturation. R100. and to the saturation, S. may vary appreciably from the value of two which is usually assumed for this exponent when interpret ing well logs. Values ranging from one to two and one-half have been found on (.ore sample investigated to date. Attempts to correlate this saturation exponent with porosity or permeability of the core have not been successful. The saturation exponent is apparently not a function of the interfacial tension between the brine and the displacing fluid. Some evidence is given indicating that the resistance of the core is not a unique function of the saturation but depends upon the manner in which this saturation was achieved. Equipment and technique are discussed for measurement of resistivities in core plugs in which water saturation can be varied. lNTRODUCTION A number of investigations of the resistivity-saturation relationship for un-c~~nsolidated sands and consolidated (.ore samples have been reported in the literature. According to most of these: R. = R¹ººS², where R² = the resistivity of a formation at saturation S, and R¹ºº= the resistivity of the formation at 100 per cent water saturation. Much of this work was (lone on unconsolidated sands desaturated by gas or oil. Hen-clerson and Ynster worked exclusively with dynamic systems, flowing oil or gas through consolidated cores. There is some doubt as to how well this reproduces static reservoir conditions. Jakosky and Hopper³ onsidered also the case of consolidated core plugs, but the oil-water distribution in the emulsions which they used to saturate their cores is almost certainly different from that occurring in reservoirs. Recently Guyod quotes the results of some Russian work which indicates that n may vary from 1.7 to 4.3. No experimental details of this work are available. In connection with electric log interpretation it is important to know the value of the saturation exponent. For example, if in a given reservoir it is found that the resistivity is three time.; the resistivity observed when the reservoir is 100 pel. cent 'saturated with water, this fact would be interpreted as indicating a water saturation of 33 per cent if the saturation exponent were 1 and a water saturation of 6-1 per cent if the saturation exponent were 2.5. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD In the work to be described it was assumed that reservoir conditions are most nearly obtained when core plugs are desaturated by the capillary pressure technique referred to in numerous places in the literature, as for example. in Bruce and Welge's paper.' In this technique the core. saturated 100 per cent with brine, is placed in contact with a ceramic disc permeable to brine but not to the displacing medium for the displacement pressures used. Pres-ure is then applied to the displacing medium and brine forced out of the core through the ceramic disc. Fig. 1 shows the core plug in place in the cell in which resistivity and saturation measurements are made. Fig. 2 shows the schematic electrical diagram wed to make resistivity measurements on the core plug. A four-electrode type circuit is used, employing a Hewlett-Packard model 400A. AC vacnum tube voltmeter. The 60-cycle AC current througli the core is adjusted to 1 milliampere and measured by noting the voltage drop across the calibrated 100-ohm resistor. The vo1tages appearing at probes 1, 2, 3, and 4 are then successively measured. Voltage drops across the top, center, and bottom portions of the core are obtained by sublracting the voltages appearing at successive probes. This technique avoids any polarization or other high contact resistance phenomena which may develop at the current input electrodes. Resistances which may develop between the core and the probes, and which are small compared to the 1-megoam input impedance 01' the vacuum tube voltmeter will (obviously not affect the measurements allpreciably. Any very appreciable resistallces which may develop at any of the probe wires are detected and allowed for by inserting a 1-megohm resistor in series with the voltage measuring probe. If the probe resistance is actually zero, the new voltage measured after insertion of the I-megolim resistor will be approximately one-half of that previously measured. since the input impedance of the vacuum tube voltmeter is itself 1 megohm. If an! appreciable probe resistance has developed, the new voltage is found to be appreciably greater than one-half of the previously measured voltage. Such probe resistance; have been found to develop only occasionally and usually can be traced to poor connections betwern the core

MUCH has been said and written about deep mine shafts and deep drill holes as man in his search for mineral wealth digs deeper into the earth's crust. Each year some new extra depth is heralded as a record, but with unlimited possibilities of going still deeper. In contrast to "digging deep," "mining high" is limited by the height of the mountains (Mt. Everest being the maximum with its 29,000-ft. elevation) and also by the extent of human endurance. An ex- ample of what might be called near- stratosphere mining in what is probably the highest mine worked by compressed air in the world is seen in a recent project in the Andes mountains of southwestern Bolivia.
