The Roan Antelope Copper Mines Ltd. are situated in the north central part of Northern Rhodesia, at an altitude of 4000 ft. and 13" south of the Equator. The town site (Luanshya) is well situated and enjoys among other things a really temperate climate for 10 months of the year. The two spring and summer months, October and November, while hot and humid, do not bring any great discomforts as compared with many other mining camps. Strictly modern brick homes, with electric lights, purified water, telephone and water-borne sewage, add to the comfort of the employees. A rainfall of approximately 60 in. per year furnishes ample water for both industrial and domestic purposes. The rainy season generally begins in October and lasts through until March. As much as 3 to 4 in. is recorded in 24 hr., but this offers no difficulties because the runoff is very rapid. The property is connected by a 24-mile branch line from Ndola with the main line of the Beira-Mashonaland and Rhodesia Railways Ltd. Practically all supplies from overseas are transported over this line from Beira, 1743 miles distant on the east coast in Portuguese East Africa. The mine output also leaves Africa from this port. Passenger service is principally via Cape Town or Durban, a distance of about 2100 miles to either port. The Imperial Airways maintain a service from Cape Town to Croydon, taking 9 days for the trip. Connections can be made with this service at Broken Hill, 150 miles south of Luanshya, by either rail or automobile. Thus, after several days of travel through virgin bush, a visitor arrives at a typically modern town site in the heart of Africa. Every development in mining, milling and smelting practice is used to advantage. A rigorous study was made of the behavior of reservoirs composed of horizontal layers, unconnected except at the well and filled with a compressible fluid. The report is presented in two parts. Part I deals with the practical implications of the results obtained; Part 11 contains the mathematical derivation of the solution. The main portion of Part I is concerned with application of the results to reservoirs composed of two layers. Relative rates of depletion of the layers are studied, and it is shown that differential depletion between layers exists in the transient stage of the reservoir, which generally is of an order of magnitude longer than the transient stage in a single-layer reservoir. In the transient stage, the more permeable layer is depleted faster than the less permeable. However, the reservoir approaches a steady-state situation where both layers contribute equally to production. Theoretical build-up curves from such reservoirs are presented, and the influence of a skin effect and flow into casing and tubing are also evaluated. The build-up curves are predicted to have, first, the familiar logarithmic straight-line section and, subsequently, a rising and flattened section. The results found are compared with an extension of an approximate theory, and it is found that this simplified theory is applicable over most of the life of the reservoir. Extensions to reservoirs containing more than two layers are indicated, and examples of the performance and build-up curves for three-layered reservoirs are presented. The theoretical results on build-up curves were applied to field examples of such reservoirs, and satisfactory results were obtained. From the build-up curve, the pemeability-thickness product, the wellbore damage and the static pressure are obtained. However, it apparently is not possible to determine the properties of the individual layers from the combined build-up curve. A large number of reservoirs have been found where the producing formation is composed of two or more layers of differing physical characteristics, such as permeability and porosity, and where also the thicknesses of the layers differ. Since in general a differential depletion should exist between the layers of such reservoirs, it would be advantageous to know the amount of the differential depletion under a given production history. It also would be valuable to know the pressure behavior, because it could be undesirable to produce a reservoir in such a manner that the pressure in one of the layers would have fallen below the bubble point of the oil at a time when another layer might still be virtually undepleted. The determination of static pressures in shut-in wells with slow build-up is another feature of importance in layered reservoirs. If the behavior of the reservoir differs appreciably from the predicted behavior of a single-layer reservoir, the type of analysis for build-up curves suggested for single-layer reservoirs is not applicable. Several authors have treated the problem of finding the pressure and production characteristics of multilayer reservoirs. Horner treated the problem of n layers in an infinite field, the layers being connected only at the well. Tempelaar-Lietz2 has presented an approximate treatment of the characteristics of a bounded reservoir composed of two layers of different permeabilities and equal thicknesses. Homer gave no information on differential depletion between layers, and the treatment of Tempelaar-Lietz was not applicable for prediction of pressure build-up behavior. In addition, it was thought that a more rigorous treatment than the one by Tempelaar-Lietz would be valuable in determining the range of validity of this solution. THE so-called Kick law' is generally accepted to . mean that for each reduction to one-half in particle diameter, in a unit weight, the same amount of work is required. In crushing-efficiency calculations on crushing tests it is customary, when basing the calculation on Kick's law, to assign ordinal numbers to each standard sieve size. These ordinal numbers increase by a constant difference with each successive sieve aperture, because standard sieve apertures are in constant ratio. Minus 200-mesh is generally assumed as equivalent to 37 microns in size. By definition, the ordinal number multiplied by the per cent material of any size is equal to the energy units in the material of that size in a unit weight of sample. The sum of all energy units is the energy units content of a unit weight of sample, whether it be crusher feed or product. The difference between the energy units in the product and that in the feed is the tangible result of the work input per unit weight of feed. From this the amount of work necessary for one energy unit may be calculated. This has been done for a quartz crushing-test made at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, in which the net work going to crushing was carefully measured. The results of this crushing test are given in Table 1.'

Gas cycling is generally considered a much less efficient oil recovery mechanism than water flooding. HOWever, recoveries from some fields have been exceptionally high as a result of gas cycling. Recovery from the Pick-ton field, for example, was calculated to be 73.5 perceni of the stock-tank oil originally in place. In evaluating pressure maintenance projects, determining how much of the recovery is due to displacement by gas and determining how much is due to vaporization of the imrnohile oil in the flow path of the cycled gas is very difficrilt. Even though most of the oil is recovered by displacetr~ent, the success of a project may depend on the amount of oil vaporized. A limited number of experiments have heen performed with a rotating model oil reservoir that simulates gas cycling operations and allows a separation of the oil from, tile free gas flowing into the laboratory wellbore at reservoir conditions, thus revealing which is displaced oil and which is vaporized oil. It Iras been determined that the amount of varporizatio'n is .significant if proper conditions exist These experiments show that oil vaporization depends on pressure, temperature, volatility of the oil and amount of gas cycled. Increases in each of these conditions increase the volume of oil vaporized. Data from six experiments affecting vaporization are presented to illustrate reservoir condition that range from favorable to unfavorable. 111 these eaperitnenis recovery by vaporization ranged from 73.6 to 15.3 percent of /he immobile oil (oil not produced by gas displacerrlt). INTRODUCTION Between 1930 and 1950, gas cycling was a popular. oil recovery practice. especially for the deeper reservoirs. Later, with many case history-type studies published for both gas cycling and waterflooding, it was generally believed that waterflooding was far superior to gas cycling, even when gas cycling was conducted as a primary production procedure by complete pressure maintenance. A good example illustrating the advantage of water-flooding over gas cycling is given in a paper by Matthews' on the South Burbank unit where gas injection was followed by waterflooding. The author concluded in part that "Early application of water injection, without the intervening period of gas injection, would have recovered as much total oil as ultimately will be recovered by waterflooding following the gas injection, and total operating life would have been shortened". This appears to be a logical conclusion. However, it should not be applied to all fields. Pressure maintenance with gas in the Pickton field, as reported by McGraw and Lohec;' will result in a much larger percentage of oil recovery than was obtained in the South Burbank unit. The great success in the Pickton field resulted partly from vaporization of the immobile oil in the flow path of the cycled gas. The amount of vaporization is related to the following conditions: volatility of the oil as reflected by the APT gravity of the stock-tank oil; reservoir temperature; reservoir pressure during gas cycling; and the amount of gas cycled. Therefore, the U. S. Bureau of Mines is investigating these effects on vaporization in a research project using a model oil reservoir. Three different stock-tank oils having 22, 35 and 45" API gravities are being used as base stock to synthesize reservoir oils. Experiments are being performcd to determine vaporization at 100, 175 and 250F and at 1,100, 2,600 and 4,100 psia. This is a progress report showing the results from six experiments. Other Bureau of Mines reports"- concerning vaporization are listed. LABORATORY EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES The equipment ' consists of an internally chromium-plated steel tube packed with finely sifted Wilcox sand. The tube is approximately 44 in. long and has an ID of 13/4 in. The sand section contains approximately 570 ml of voids, has a porosity of 32 percent, and a permeability to air of 4.3 darcies. A unique feature of the laboratory reservoir (Fig. 1) permits the tube part to rotate at 1 rpm while the outlet and inlet heads are held stationary. The outlet end contains diametrically opposed windows to permit observatlon of the flowing fluids, and two valves, one on the top and the other at the bottom. Oil and free gas. when being produced simultaneously, can be separated by manipulating the two valves to keep a gas-oil interface in view through the windows. Thus, only gas is produced through the top valve and only oil flows through the bottom valve. The laboratory equipment was designed to study vaporization. Therefore, a uniform reservoir was made using dry sifted sand as opposcd to using a consolidated sand core with interstitial water. Furthermore. the reservoir was tilted to minimize fingering of gas. More than 90 per cent of the ore produced by stoping at McIntyre is mined by horizontal cut-and-fill methods. The remainder is mined by square set and fill. In the stopes on the upper levels, mill holes are spaced 80 ft. apart and usually it is feasible to mine the breast for the full distance between the mill holes in one operation and to break, clean out and fill without any support for the roof or walls, other than the odd crown bar or sprag. The ore is scraped to the mill holes by small (10 to 15 hp.) air-operated slusher hoists. No grizzlies are used over the chutes and care is taken to break up the big pieces beforehand. Fill usually is spread by tramming sand or waste in a one-ton car from the fill raise. Fill raises are driven parallel to the strike of the vein and are inclined at approximately 48°. In long stopes, where more than one fill raise is necessary, they are spaced about 300 ft. apart. It is sometimes necessary to stand square sets for a short distance each way under the brow of the fill raise. support needed increases and on the lower levels and in some wide stopes where closer support of the back is necessary, it has become standard practice to timber the stope with 12 by 12-in. timber. Rough timber sets consisting. of caps, tightly blocked to the back and supported on posts 7 ft. high, are placed at about 5 ft. intervals. These sets are generally salvaged from the lower breast before blasting and are used again on the upper slice after the fill has been placed. In general, two or three breasts may be broken down before mucking out and filling and the ground stands long enough to enable this to be done safely. On the lower levels and in certain wide stopes and in heavy ground, a more intermittent method must be used. Only one breast or even part of a breast can be blasted and the back must be timbered before the ore can be removed. In these cases, sill timbers 16 ft. long, supported at one end on posts from the fill and at the other end on pins inserted in holes drilled in the face, are used. Timber cribs 5 by 9 ft. built from the fill to the roof and tightly blocked to the back are used throughout the mine to reinforce both the timber sets and the square sets.

Trends in slag composition in acid open hearth practice, particularly the variation in iron and manganese oxides during refining, are reviewed. A procedure which is currently being used to control the refining reactions is described and partially explained through slag phase diagram considerations. In addition, the ionic nature of these slags is considered and it is proposed that silica combines with the oxide ion and forms a series of complex silicate ions. The effect of basic oxides such as FeO, MnO, and CaO is apparently additive in furnishing the oxide ion for this purpose. IT is now possible to control192 the refining of steel in an acid open hearth furnace to a surprising degree. This control has been brought about through the knowledge and use of several facts and tests. These are: 1—A planned charge analysis based on a knowledge of the type of fuel, the bath depth, etc. 2—Knowledge and control of rate of fuel input as well as its method of atomization, if any. 3—Determination of the slag fluidity. 4—Bath temperatures (use of the Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouple). 5—Periodic determination of carbon content (use of the Carb-analyzer or Carbometer). Through the use of these control methods, a heat may be made to "melt-in" with or without residual manganese and silicon. The rate of refining or carbon elimination may be controlled accurately, and the desired tapping (or "go-ahead") carbon may be approached at a rapid or slow rate according to preference and type of steel being made. Thus operating time may be predetermined and greatly reduced. Further, all of the refining can be done without any ore or other oxidizing additions, and the heat may be brought to the desired tapping temperature simultaneously with the attainment of the desired carbon analysis. This control procedure is being used in most acid plants in the United States today and has been de- scribed.', ' Although the slag metal relations are sufficiently well known to control the heat as stated, yet it is possible to account for only about two-thirds' of the 0, which must have been used for the elimination of the carbon and other metalloids. Phase diagram studies' of the slags, slag weights, the metal particle theory,' ore additions, limestone additions, etc., may all be taken into consideration; yet, the mechanism of oxidation and source of all the oxygen remain to be explained. This paper reviews some of the principles upon which the control methods were based and proposes other possibilities regarding the unexplained phenomena. Old and New Acid Open Hearth Practice Some of the recent statements in the literature regarding acid open hearth operation are based on old heat data which are not typical of modern American practice. These old heat logs have been responsible for many misconceptions regarding the acid hearth practice and represent heats which do not coincide with modern methods. In recent years, American practice has been altered materially and these changes will be briefly described. Modern American Practice: A typical log of a modern American acid open hearth heat' is shown in Fig. 1 which indicates that the refining time was only two hours, during which the carbon was eliminated rapidly and the bath temperature increased at a fast rate. The manganese and silicon contents of the metal were essentially eliminated and their oxides had become constituent parts of the slag at the "melt-down" period. Underground operations of the United States Potash Co. at its mine near Carlsbad, N.M., have been continuous since the property was opened about five years ago. Approximately one million tons of potash has been mined and two shafts have been sunk, each to a depth of about 1000 ft. Outstanding in the company's operations is the fact that not a single blasting accident has occurred during the aforesaid period. The purpose of this paper is to describe the blasting practice that has made possible the achievement of this accident-prevention record. The mining method employed in extracting the thick horizontal bed of potash may be described as a double-entry room-and-pillar system. Mine development is kept well in advance of extraction operations, and a three years' supply of ore, at least, is always available. Limits of the orebody have not been determined, and in the present system of mining headings are advanced by a "shortwall" method. This was the first potash ore bed developed in the United States. The nature of the deposit, therefore, was unknown, and it was deemed expedient to outline a conservative mining policy. Later, when more is known about the deposit and certain control ascertained, a "longwall" panel retreating method may be found advisable. The necessity for a domestic supply of potash became a national issue previous to and during the World War. The United States Government came to realize that this country should not be dependent upon foreign sources of potash, and began extensive explorations in many parts of the country, seeking an orebody that would meet the exacting requirements of the domestic market. The Department of Interior, through the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines, made every effort to determine the location of potash deposits and encouraged their exploitation by private capital. Through the combined efforts of the Department of Interior and private industry, the deposit now being worked by the United States Potash Co. was discovered and brought into production.

The new 4800-ton fine-grinding plant at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines property at Timmins, in the Porcupine district of northern Ontario, went into operation in November 1937, and represents the culmination of an experimental program. The plant is a moderately low rectangular building of hollow tile on a steel frame, large enough to house four 7 by 15-ft. ball mills, with a 12 by 27-ft. classifier beside each mill. At one end is space for the addition of another mill and classifier or a mill and classifier for the regrinding of table concentrates. This regrinding is now done in the old grinding department of the main mill building. Also within the new building are the four 6-in. sand pumps for lifting the product from the low-dis-charge ball mills up to the classifier feed launders and the containers and appurtenances of a complete dust-collecting system. Together with the usual overhead crane, these constitute the major units of equipment within the new plant. The location is at the lower end of the main mill buildings toward the old tailings pond, now so neatly leveled off and sodded to rival the very best of our own W.P.A. projects. Close by the new grinding plant is a large dome-shaped structure—the new fine-ore bin designed and built by Mr. Longmore and the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs. There are four separate automatically loaded inclined belt conveyors leading up from the bottom of the bin to the grinding plant. Each belt is equipped with a recording weightometer, in the grinding building. The whole structure and the machinery within it give the impression of permanence and a carefully integrated design with close attention to details, giving the operators every advantage for consistently good work. The many ideas and opinions behind this achievement were all ably organized and executed by the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs, and not a few were directly initiated by them. Results are reported of a study of surface dendrilic structure of an Al- Cu alloy solidified against a chill wall. Most primary and secondary "arms " in the surface dendritic structure are arranged orthogonally, giving the impression of strong preferred orientalion on the surface. However, no such preferred orientation exists and it is therefore evident the arms do not represent (100) directions. The primary arms are shown to be interseclions of a (100) plane wilh the chill plane, or, equally often. the projeclion of a (100) direction on the chill plane. Secondary dendrite arms are usually within a few degrees of 90 deg to the primary arm, independent of grain orientalion. Prirary, secondary, and higher-order surface dendrite arms almost always represenl intersections of (100) platzes with the chill surace, or pvojections of (100) direclions. Growlh of secondary arms is favored on the side of the primary arm where a (100) direclion points toward the chill surfAce a1 a Lou, angle. Surface dendrile arms are often observed to be bent. In these cases, the crystal lallice changes orientation; bending is concave to the chill surface. In a previous paper,' a technique was discussed whereby large grains can be obtained at a chill surface. The technique used involves quickly drawing superheated liquid A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy into a thin copper mold, so that the mold is full well before solidification begins. The chill surfaces employed are polished copper blocks coated with amorphous carbon. Shrinkage during solidification between dendrite arms and grains delineates both, without the need for polishing or etching of the cast surface. The grain structure of the chill surface was discussed in a previous paper;' in this paper, the dendrite arms within each grain are examined. Previous work on surface dendrites includes that of Edmunds, who studied the development of preferred orientation in zinc, cadmium, and magnesium.' In zinc and cadmium, he found that the surface region has a (0001) texture (parallel to the chill surface). Walton and Chalmers reasoned that, since the fast growth (1010) directions are in the basal plane, nuclei which have this plane parallel to the mold wall would produce larger grains than nuclei with other orientations. Hence, the texture observed is as expected.3 The same authors, in measurements on aluminum ingots, found no preferred orientation at the mold wall. However, the X-ray technique they used measured the preferred orientation in terms of grain numbers, not grain areas; larger grains were weighted equally with small ones. No preferred orientation is expected on this basis at the chill surface. In a later paper,' Edmunds stated that experiments show a random grain orientation at the surface in die cast aluminum; his technique, also used in his earlier paper, takes account of grain area. Little work has been published on the dendritic structure of metal chill grains. Recent work of Biloni and Chalmers on "predendritic growth" shows the change in morphology from spherical to dendritic during the initial stages of freezing, 5 but this work did not include detailed examination of the fully developed dendrites. Other pertinent work includes that of Lin-denmeyer, who investigated the growth of ice dendrites. 6 When growth was on a substrate, the dendrite axes were bent. The bend corresponded to a change in orientation of the crystal lattice and occurred in such a way as to align the basal plane to the substrate. DENDRITE STRUCTURE Fig. 1 shows the chill surface of a typical casting poured above the critical temperature necessary to produce coarse grains. A cursory examination of these grains shows that the surface dendrite arms within most of the grains are oriented roughly perpendicular to each other. One is tempted to assume that these are (100) directions and that, therefore, marked preferred orientation exists at the chill face. This, however, is not the case. Each of the grains in the casting of Fig. 1 was separately identified, Fig. 2, and its orientation determined by the Laue back-reflect ion method. Results are given in Fig. 3 and it is seen there that no preferred orientation exists. Even when grain area is accounted for, there is no significant preferred orientation. The relationship between surface grain structure and crystal orientation was then obtained by assigning X and Y axes to the casting surface, Fig. 1, and assigning the same axes to the stereographic projections of each grain. Thus, the visible surface structure could be compared readily with grain orientation. This was done for fifty-five of the grains of Fig. 1. Results of this study on three typical grains are described below, and some general observations given subsequently. Fig. 4 shows the structure and stereographic projection of a grain which lies near the (100) zone (with respect to the casting surface). The X and Y directions are marked on the projection, and the photomicrograph mounted with the same orientation. Poles of the stereographic projection represent crys-tallographic directions in the grain which point out of the casting, toward the chill. Two (100) directions are shown in Fig. 4. A line joining the center of the projection and a pole represents the projection of the pole onto the X-Y plane (chill surface). Two such lines are shown in Fig. 4 (solid lines). A line joining the intersection of a great circle with the circumference of the projection gives the trace of a crystallo-graphic plane in the chill surface; two such traces are shown (dashed lines).

The objective of the research is to determine whether solid-solution strengthening effects observed in dilute solutions of silver can be accounted for by the influence of the solute addition on the dislocation structure oj- the crystals. The additions of both tin and indium produced only small changes in the dislocation densities and arrangements in silver crystals. However, as found previously, small solute additions have large effects on the tensile properties; the inj-luence of the tin and indium additions on the temperature dependence of the flow stress and the easy-glide range is especially strong; It is concluded that the indirect strengthening effect of the solute due to variations in the dislocation density as proposed by Seeger is of minor importance and that solute atom-dislocation interactions are responsible for the observed strengthenirzg effects. The experimental results were combined with those of Rogausch to test the concenlvatiorz dependence of solute strengthening. Both the first and one-half power dependences of the critical resoleed shear stress on concentratiorz fail in very dilute solutions. THE objective of the research is to determine whether solid-solution strengthening effects observed in dilute solutions of silver can be accounted for, at least in part, by the influence of the solute addition on the dislocation structure of the crystals. It is recognized that the addition of solute atoms may influence the strength properties of a metal through both "direct" and "indirect" effects. The former refer to the strengthening mechanisms that result from the interaction of solute atoms with dislocations; in the latter case, the strengthening effects arise as a result of solute's influence on quantities such as dislocation density, dislocation arrangement, stacking-fault energy, diffusivities, the elastic constants, and so forth. It is clear that the correct interpretation of solid-solution strengthening phenomena cannot be given until the importance of indirect strengthening effects is properly evaluated. In the particular case of close-packed metal crystals, Seeger showed that solute strengthening effects in dilute solutions of copper and silver might be accounted for by an increase in dislocation density due to the addition of the solute. Seeger's argument was that the strengthening effects extrapolated from more concentrated solutions indicate that small concentrations of impurities raise the critical resolved shear stress much more than is predicted by a concentration-independent dislocation density. The above idea was a very reasonable one. The dislocation theories of work hardening of Taylor,2 Cot-trell, 3 Mott, 4 and seeger5 had already associated the increased flow stresses with increased dislocation densities in deformed metals; investigations of the dislocation structure of metal crystals had provided a logical basis for expecting an increased dislocation density in crystals containing impurities (see for example, Ref. 6). The numbers involved seem reasonable, too. It can be expected that the flow stress of the crystal would increase as the one-half power of the dislocation density.' Solute additions of 1 at. pct to metal crystals result in strength increases by factors in the range of three to ten. If one assumes that the strengths of the pure metal crystals are determined by their dislocation densities, then dislocation-density increases of one to two orders of magnitude as a result of solute addition would be required to account for the observed strengthening—not an unreasonable expectation. In addition to the effect of the solute addition on dislocation density, one might also anticipate important strengthening contributions to result from the solute's influence on the dislocation arrangement. Parker and washburns have reviewed a number of experimental evidences which show important strengthening effects due to the presence of subboundaries. Further, lattice strains due to impurity segregation would be expected to influence the distribution as well as the dislocation density of the as-grown crystal. As pointed out in the reviews of Chalmers,6 Elbaum,9 and winegard,lo micro segregation of impurities occurs at all interfaces of crystals in cellular growth; the impurity gradient results in lattice strains which can be reduced with the presence of dislocation arrays in the region of the impurity gradient. Hence, one would expect the presence of a solute to favor the formation of dislocation subgrain structures and that the subgrains would have an important influence on the strength of the crystal. The experimental observations that concern the possibility of an important strengthening contribution through the influence of the solute on the dislocation density or arrangement are not in agreement. Haasen has reviewed the observations of Meakin and Wils-dorf,12 Howie,13 and Bocek 36 and concluded that the solute's influence on dislocation density is not sufficient to account for strengthening effects in concentrated solutions but might, as seegerl suggested, make an important contribution in very dilute solutions. On the other hand, Hendrickson and Fine 14 concluded that changes in the dislocation density and dislocation width accounted for the solid-solution strengthening effects observed in silver-based aluminum solid solutions. Bethlehem, Pa.-In discussing the question personally with Mr. Matteson I have found that he simply proposed this as a suggestion and he recognizes, as well as a great many other oil geologists and oil operators, that to put into practice such a suggestion would mean the overcoming of many difficulties. Yet perhaps it may be possible to overcome the various objections that may be offered. Undoubtedly one of the most serious objections is that of incomplete and inaccurate well records. Faulty records are worse than no records at all. Perhaps, however, definite instructions and insistence on their observation may remedy this defect after a time. THE CHAIRMAN (M. L. REQUA, San Francisco, Cal.).-This subject is a. very important one, but just how far the National Government can go in .taking action is a question: It involves, of course, the question of State rights. California, I .think, has done very well up to date and probably will do better in the future. The law that was passed at the session of the Legislature 2 years ago is working as satisfactorily as anything of that kind can work with so little experience to guide the framers of the statute. We recognize in California the vital necessity of conserving the oil of the State. We have come to the conclusion that there is not as much oil ,in California as we thought there was. In the month of December the State drew on its oil stocks to- the extent of 1,800,000 bbl. and I think that the January statistics will show probably as much more. There is more or less of a.: panic at the present time among the large marketing concerns regarding the question as to where they are going to get their oil for future requirements

W. C. MATTESON (communication to the Secretary*).-The criticism and question raised by Arthur Knapp regarding the standardization of nomenclature is most important. Faulty rock classification-is generally the result of carelessness or ignorance on the part of the driller. Two remedies might be suggested. In a field where several large companies are operating on an extensive scale, a geologist from each concern might be assigned to superintend the gathering of well-log data and the classification of samples. The geologists from the several operating companies might then combine their data, which would doubtless give valuable information to all interested parties. At present, coordination is not a big factor, unfortunately, but the time will come when conservation will demand such systematic coordination on the part of competing companies. The second remedy lies in instructing and educating the driller to a thorough understanding of the importance of an accurate log and correct classification of the various formations. The writer does not agree with the statement that "90 per cent. of the logs as taken today are absolutely worthless to any one but the one who has taken the log." While mistakes in nomenclature often occur, the driller is generally able to classify the important water-, oil-, and gas-bearing formations with a fair degree of accuracy. Such information is often sufficient to permit accurate correlation and also constitutes valuable data for projection purposes. It must be borne in mind that to attempt to use well-log data in a strict scientific sense of accuracy is impracticable and impossible. A broad interpretation and a comprehensive knowledge of the practical limits of such' information are essential in applying it successfully. Even experienced geologists do not always agree on rock classification. The question as to what constitutes correct nomenclature should receive the earnest and immediate attention of geologists, operators, and producers. Although standard textbooks on geology give correct definitions and descriptions of the general rock species, such textbooks fail to develop the subject in sufficient detail for the work under consideration. The Globe Mining District is in the southeast central part of Arizona, in Gila County. Globe, with a population of about 7000, is the terminus of the Arizona Eastern R.R., a branch line 130 miles long that connects with the Southern Pacific R.R. at Bowie. In 1874, prospectors crossing the Pinal Mountains from the west located what is generally known as the Old Dominion mine. For several years, it attracted little attention, because of the greater interest aroused by the discovery of high-grade silver ores in some of the foothills northeast of Globe. About six years later, the prospector turned his attention to the abundant copper ore revealed by surface workings along the Old Dominion vein, and, in 1884, the Old Dominion company erected two 30-ton furnaces. From 1888 to 1893, the Old Dominion company is said to have maintained an average annual production of about 8,000,000 Ib. of copper. Until Dec. 1, 1898, all supplies had to be freighted into Globe by wagons and the mines of the district operated intermittently because of high expenses, but with the advent of the railroad the Old Dominion company continued to be a large and steady producer. In the Globe district, the production of copper far exceeds in importance that of any other metal. There are four operating companies along the Old Dominion vein and the total annual product of these properties for 1923 was about 45,000,000 lb. of copper. The unit size of the mineral tracts in the district is the regulation mining claim, 600 ft. wide by 1500 ft. long, and all ownerships are held in fee. Globe is 3600 ft. above sea level, and lies between the Apache MOUntains to the east and the Pinal Mountains to the west. The principal drainage of the district is northward through Pinal creek into the Salt River. The general slope from the high point along the vein, where the Superior & Boston mine is, to Pinal creek, where the Old Dominion mines are, is about 250 ft. to the mile. Geology The oldest rocks in the district are pre-Cambrian crystalline schists known as the Pinal schist, which are the basement upon which all the later rocks were deposited. (communication to the Secretary*). -The author has failed to consider the point which in my mind is the most convincing in advocating some sort of a bureau for the collection of well logs. I venture to say that 90 per cent. of the logs as taken today are absolutely worthless to any one but the one who has taken the log. This is largely due to the careless use of nomenclature. The author says on page 289, "He must ascertain which of the many factors might account for the dry hole in question and often only careful examination of well logs will convey this information." I believe that even a most careful examination of the average log reveals nothing. I have at hand a book on petroleum, by a well-known author. This book has a number of logs from fields all over the world, from which I shall illustrate. In a well log from Kansas I find "Soft gray shale" and in one from Humble I find "Hard blue shale." The East Texas field is in Smith, Rusk, Gregg, Upshur and Cherokee counties, Texas. The discovery well was completed Sept. 8, 1930, near the eastern limit of the field. Within less than one year the new field became the dominant factor in the world production of crude oil. On Aug. 16, 1931, eleven months after completion of the discovery well, there were 1644 wells in the field, and the average daily production was 584,475 bbl. Since that time the number of wells has increased to 8195 on Oct. 1, 1933, and the field has produced 385,979,691 bbl. of oil. The geology of the East Texas field has been discussed by Lahee,1 Levorsen,2 Minor and Hanna3 and others, and it will not be discussed in detail here. The field is a structure of the monocline type on the westward dipping homocline between the Sabine uplift and the East Texas geosyncline. Production is obtained from the Woodbine group, which has been truncated and then sealed by the Austin chalk, which rests unconformably upon it. The oil-saturated part of the sand lies bettween a sub-sea depth of 3050 ft. on the east side of the field, where the Woodbine sand stops and the Austin chalk rests directly upon older formations, and a sub-sea depth of 3320 ft., which was the average depth of the water table in the sand at the time the field was discovered. The field is about 40 miles long and has an average width of approximately 4 1/2 miles. The area within the proven limits of the field is close to 116,580 acres and the normal Woodbine water underlies nearly 62,000 acres on the western side of the field at the present time. The field is unusual in several respects: (1) the tremendous size of the reservoir system and the quantity of oil in place; (2) the large area of the oil and water contact, which makes water movement possible into the oil-bearing part of the structure; (3) the absence of free gas within the main producing sand of the field. THE key to maximum production of ingots for the war effort is maximum production of pig iron. For any given furnace and ore, the most important single influence on blast-furnace production is the quality of the furnace coke. It is generally recognized that undoubtedly deterioration of Pittsburgh coking coals will be accelerated by the depletion of some of the better grades' of coal; the extension of mine mechanization, with attendant degradation of coal quality; and the opening of new coal fields, some of which are known to be fairly high in sulphur. All of these factors, contributing as they do to higher ash and sulphur, and not infrequently to inferior quality of coke, made it desirable that an extensive study be undertaken to determine the effect of washing some coals that closely approximate the average chemical composition of coking coals to be expected in the future by the subsidiaries of the United States Steel Corporation in the Pittsburgh district. It was deemed advisable to study the improvement obtained by washing such coals and to determine the need for supplementing the existing coal washery at Clairton to assure continued maximum production of pig iron from presently available furnace stacks. The existence of the coal washer at Clairton made it possible to conduct tests on coals used in raw form and on similar coals after washing. This study covers an investigation of the quality of furnace coke as affected by washing coking coals, and is confined to the use of 100 per cent high-volatile Pittsburgh seam coals from Fayette and Greene Counties in the manufacture of furnace coke. It covers the improvement in chemical and physical properties as well as the degree of uniformity in coke obtained by washing these coals, and includes the effect on blast-furnace production and practice. The test period involved is four months; the plants, Clairton by-product coke plant, and the Carrie No. I and No. 2 blast furnaces at Rankin, Pa., Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation. CLAIRTON BY-PRODUCT COKE PLANT AND COAL WASHER The Clairton by-product coke plant carbonizes 30,800 net tons of coal daily in 22 batteries containing 1482 ovens. Three oven sizes are used, commonly known as wide, medium, and narrow types, recognizing the difference in oven width. These ovens also differ in height and length. The present coal washer has a daily capacity of- approximately 14,000 tons, leaving 16,800 tons to be carbonized in raw form. Washed coal is used on all the narrow ovens and on three of the six batteries with ovens of medium width, raw coals being used on all the remaining ovens. The customary arrangement is

Infrared spectroscopy, employing the internal reflection method in conjunction with solvent extraction techniques, was used to study surface reactions between aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate and both sphalerite and precipitated zinc sulfide, each activated with aqueous copper sulfate. It was determined that reactions occurring on the sphalerite and zinc sulfide surfaces produce the reaction products ethyl dixanthogen and cuprous ethyl xanthate, some of which are adsorbed on the mineral surfaces. As the pH of the xanthate solution increased from 5.6 to 11.0, the amount of cuprous ethyl xanthate on powdered sphalerite surfaces decreased and the amount of ethyl dixanthogen first increased and then decreased. It is generally accepted that the collector potassium ethyl xanthate will not float the mineral sphalerite (ZnS). However, Gaudin1 showed that sphalerite readily floats if activated with certain metal cations before exposure to the xanthate. Copper sulfate (CuSO4) was found to be the best activator for sphalerite. The over-all flotation reagent reaction, as given by Gaudin,3 is as follows: While this is the over-all reaction, the exact mechanism of the reaction and the intermediate compounds that may be formed are not yet known with certainty.
