Mineral raw materials, because they are essential to our industrial prosperity and military strength, must be made available in substantial quantities regardless of cost. Variations in the cost of procuring minerals, as compared with the cost of obtaining other commodities, and changes in the cost of production of different minerals relative to one another, will naturally influence the quantities of a given mineral item that can be marketed readily. However, in the last analysis, the cost of winning minerals from the ground usually constitutes only a small fraction of the value of the end-use products and services derived from them. The miner's share of the cost of a typewriter, telephone circuit, or even a modem office building, is almost insignificant. Far more important to the ultimate consumer, therefore, than any minor saving in cost is the assurance of ample supplies of the minerals needed to aliment our expanding economy. To create a successful metal mining operation involves (1 ) the discovery and systematic development of a mineral deposit, (2) extraction of the ore, (3) the mechanical and metallurgical processing to eliminate worthless or harmful impurities, and (4) the profitable disposal of the product. The fist step of the technological process belongs chiefly in the realm of the geologist, the second is a mining engineer's job, the third is mainly up to the millmen and extractive metallurgists; whereas the fourth and equally important step poses a commercial problem that has aspects in common with the marketing of other products. Ore finding is far from being an exact science. There is no mathematical criterion for evaluating the efficiency of prospecting and exploration. Lady Luck shares the honors or assumes part of the blame along with the prospector and geologist. Marketing like- wise involves factors that seemingly defy engineering analysis. ON Saturday evening, Sept. 9, a small party of Institute members, their wives and friends, left New York to attend the Fall Meeting of the Institute at San Francisco. In this party there were: President and Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight; Mr. and Mrs. George D. Barron; Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Stehli; N. S. Spencer and Miss Spencer; the Secretary and Mrs. F. F. Sharpless. They were joined at Chicago by E. F. Eurich, and by Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Baldwin and daughter. Our party was met at Chicago by Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Rice, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Terrell and W. F. Boericke, who constituted themselves an impromptu entertainment committee and proceeded to carry out a delightful little program. We were taken to the Lake Shore drive, where a stiff wind off the lake refreshed us after a sultry day on the train, and on our return to the city saw Chicago illuminated with all its brilliance of electricity. We were entertained at dinner at the Drake Hotel. In spite of being two hours late getting into Omaha, we were right on the dot at Denver on Tuesday morn-ing. Horace F. Lunt came to the hotel soon after breakfast, and told us that a trip to the mountains had been planned. Having learned the number in the party, he began to gather up his automobiles for a 10 o'clock start.

THE theme of this paper is that one of the greatest retarding factors in progress of geologic science is the inadequate training given to students of geology in schools and universities. Students of geology are still taught as though geology were an independent, sovereign domain of science. Consequently, only in exceptional cases do geology students acquire more than the most elementary introductory college courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry, and frequently not even so much. Furthermore, students with such training receive Ph. D. degrees in geology, and often they become professors of geology in our universities. The phenomena of geology are also phenomena of physics, of astron-omy, of chemistry, and to a lesser extent, of biology; and to properly deal with them a knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry considerably beyond the elementary level is necessary. Already many of the physical and chemical problems of the earth, such as earthquakes, gravity, hydrology, meteorology, and the physical chemistry of rocks and minerals, are being attacked with considerable success by the employment of the methods of physics and chemistry, and being written almost exclusively in the language of advanced mathematical physics and chemistry. Geophysics is not just a "borderland field" between two sciences; on the contrary, it is the process whereby the knowledge and techniques of the more fundamental science, physics, are borrowed and employed in solving the problems of the more dependent science-geology. Geo-physics therefore embraces a large part of the two sciences taken together. The institution of work in geophysics, in its true sense, in depart-ments of geology would go far toward correcting the present inadequate training of students of geology and bringing the members of that profes-sion more uniformly abreast of the advances being made in earth science by people whose training has been primarily in the fundamental sciences of physics and chemistry rather than in geology. If something of this sort is not done, the geological profession may contemplate being left farther and farther behind as the scientific procession moves onward.

Commercial production of heavy minerals from plant tailing streams is undergoing study by Syncrude Canada Ltd. When tar sand from an open pit mine is processed and upgraded to synthetic crude oil, heavy minerals can be recovered from the extraction circuit and can be upgraded to provide concentrates of zircon and titanium minerals. The titanium minerals concentrate, consisting of a mixture of ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile, can be utilized as recovered or can be upgraded to synthetic rutile. With the construction of further synthetic crude oil plants in Western Canada a large reserve of heavy minerals will become available for production.

On the basis of liquidus measurements in the system COO-Mg0-Al2O3-Sio, and previously published data, diagrams have been constructed at 5 pct Al2O3, intervals from 5 to 35 pct Al2O3,. Liquidus temperatures and primary phase fields are shown. The optimum composition of a blast furnace slag for a given alumina content is indicated. At the optimum point, ordinary slags will be entirely liquid and will have maximum desulphurization potential and minimum viscosity. The relation of optimum composition of slags to the "plateau region" of the liquidus surface, and the application of these data on synthetic quaternary slags to actual slag compositions are discussed. Index of refraction of glasses is given as well as composition, temperature, and phase data for each mixture. THE usual blast furnace slag, as a first approximation, can be considered a mixture of the four oxides, CaO, MgO, Also,, and SiO,. Systematic, extensive data for the quaternary system, CaO-MgO-A1,0,-SiO, is therefore required for the understanding of the properties of such a slag as a function of composition and temperature. With sufficient data, it should be possible to fix unequivocably the relative amounts of lime, magnesia, and silica required for a given alumina content to result in a slag composition having optimum properties. Other constituents, such as FeO, MnO, Ti02, and S, have an effect on the properties of a slag, but as long as they are present in small and approximately constant amounts they produce only a second-order effect superimposed upon the major changes in properties of slags determined by the relative amounts of the four major components. Viscosity and desulphurization data have been reported for mixtures approaching blast furnace slags in composition, but systematic liquidus data have not been obtained. Inasmuch as a slag must be all liquid in order to be most effective as well as practicable, clearly the temperature above which a mixture is all liquid (liquidus temperature) is a type of data needed. Such data have been obtained through the study of 446 compositions and are pre- sented in this paper along with a discussion of their bearing on the optimum composition of blast furnace slags. For an orderly presentation of the data, the quaternary system is viewed as a tetrahedron with one component at each apex. Fig. 1 shows a tetrahedron representing the system Ca0-Mg0-A1,0,-Si0,. During the past several years, the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture, and the ductility values can often be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging. The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Several types of abnormal loss of duetility can be distinguished, of which those caused by excessive amounts of inclusions of undesirable type and those caused by unsuitable grain size and inget structure are well known. The particular type of abnormal lowered ductility currently under consideration may be distinguished by the fact that the low-temperature aging treatment necessary for its relief is insufficient to cause any visible change in the micro-structure as ordinarily observed. As this aging will in fact eventually occur at room temperature, the phenomenon of present interest may be given the symptomatic definition, ''Temporary Abnormal Low Ductility." Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established, beyond reasonable doubt, that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary abnormal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, The Steel Founders' Society of America has, since Nov. 1, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-duetility effects and porosity. The interest of this investigation thus extends to permanent abnormal losses of ductility, such as are caused by the inclusions which sometimes result from special deoxidizing practices and possibly from metallic nitrides, but as these can he distinguished from the temporary effect of hydrogen, they have been excluded from the work reported here except when they

THE accuracy of the silver-assay depends in great measure upon a careful regulation of the heat of the muffle during the process of cupellation. At the beginning of the operation, a relatively high temperature is required to " open " the lead buttons, that is, to clear off the black film of oxide that covers the surface of the metal button immediately after fusion has taken place. The muffle is usually closed up until the buttons are uncovered. As soon as a clear, free surface of molten metal is exposed to the oxidizing action of the air, the temperature should immediately be lowered to the minimum temperature at which the formation and absorption of litharge can progress freely, and the buttons still be kept from " freezing." The process, under satisfactory conditions, will be characterized by the formation of rings of litharge crystals (" feathers," as they are styled), on the cupel, about the oxidizing globule; and the nearer these rings of litharge crystals call be made to approach the central oxidizing globule without interfering with the freedom of oxidation and absorption, the smaller will be the volatilization of silver, and consequeiltly the greater the degree of accuracy attained. This minimum heat must be maintained uniformly during the oxidation of the lead; and just as the last of the lead is disappearing, and the button is preparing to l blick," the temperature of the muffle should be allowed to rise so that the last traces of lead will be driven off. This regulation of the heat calls into play all the skill of the assayer, and requires a vigilant eye, able to distirlguish between the slightest variations of temperature of the muffle, assisted by a nice adjustment of fuel and draft. With a few cupels in the muffle at one time, the proper heat for each cupel can be maintained by roughly approximating the proper temperature, and then moving the cupels backward and forward in the muffle; but this is gene-

The Jetter and borie' teclznique of determining textures using a spherical specimen has been applied to tlze study of compression-rolled beryllium sheet. Snzall spheres the order of 1 mm in diam cut from the beryllium sheet were autotnatically rotated about tz41o axes using the G.E. single-crystal goniometer. Quantitative pole figures were obtained without tke need to apply absorption corrections. Compression-rolled beryllium exhibited peak intensities ,for (0002) planes of positions tilted 10 deg to the rolling plane and a near random distribution of (1010) planes about the nornal to the rolling plane. TECHNIQUES for determining textures of rolled sheet material are amply described in the literature. The techniques are found to be variations of two basic methods. One due to Decker, Asp, and arker, referred to as the transmission method, utilizes a thin-sheet specimen in which the X-ray beam enters the specimen from one side and the intensity of the beam which emerges from the opposite side is measured. The second method due to chulz,3 referred to as the reflection method, utilizes a thick specimen and the intensity of the beam emerging from the same side is measured. The two rotations of the specimen in the beam are designated a and 8. In order to completely determine the texture of sheet material, it is generally necessary to use a combination of the two methods. The calculations involved in correcting the raw X-ray data for absorption effects and the combining of the data obtained by the two methods are very laborious and time consuming. To avoid the intensity corrections which arise as a result of the changing diffraction volume and path length within the sample other methods have been proposed. The Norton method utilizes a cylindrically shaped specimen cut from the sheet material. Since the rods have rotational symmetry, the absorption correction is constant for rotations about the sheet texture. Jetter and Borie' employed a spherical specimen to analyze the fiber texture of extruded aluminum rods. The spheres were rotated rapidly about the fiber axis to include a large number of grains in the X-ray beam and changes in intensity with respect to tilts of the fiber axis were measured. The absorption correction was constant for all angles and was neglected. The Jetter and Borie' technique finds excellent ap- plication to very fine-grained low-absorbing metals in which the entire sphere volume can contribute to the diffraction volume. In the case of low-absorbing metals, however, serious limitations on specimen thickness occur as demonstrated by Braggs due to de-focussing effects. Peak shifts may occur which negate the assumption that integrated intensities are proportional to peak intensities. These limitations in sphere size to the order of 0.5 to 1 mm for beryllium require that the grain size be sufficiently small to include a large enough statistical sample. The present paper describes the application of spherical specimens less than 1 mm in diam to the quantitative determination of pole figures for compression-rolled beryllium sheet having a grain size the order of 10 p. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Specimen Preparation. Two techniques for spark-machining beryllium spheres were tried. One involved the use of a hollow cylinder as a cutting tool. The tool was fed into the rotating cylindrical specimen as shown in Fig. l(a). The hollow cylinder was carefully aligned such that the axis of the cylinder and the axis of the specimen lay in the same plane and were 90 deg to each other. As the hollow cylinder was fed into the rotating cylindrical specimen, a spherical shape was formed as shown in Fig. 1. Alignment was very critical. Slight misalignment resulted in the formation of a barrel-shaped specimen instead of a sphere. A second technique involved the use of a cutting wheel shaped as shown in Fig. 2 with a groove of the desired radius. A section of the sheet specimen was first turned into a cylinder on the left part of the cutting wheel. It was then shifted to the right and a spherical specimen was turned as shown in Fig. 2. The axis of the cylinder lay in the plane of the sheet. Flats corresponding to the rolling plane of the sheet were used to grip the specimen during the machining operation and these served to identify the rolling plane of the sphere. 2) Rotation of Spec=. The spherical specimen is shown mounted on the G.E. single-crystal goniometer in Fig. 3. The knob A of the goniometer shown in Fig. 3 rotates the specimen about the pedestal axis. These angles have been designated as @ angles. The knob B rotates the specimen about an axis perpendicular to the pedestal axis. These angles have been designated as p angles. A device was made to automatically drive the single-crystal goniometer by means of two flexible shafts connected to the A and B knobs as shown in Fig. 3. The motor system was designed to rotate the knob A, thus rotating the specimen through angles of $I while the B knob remained stationary. After one complete

A HUNDRED years have passed since Wöhler made the first few particles of aluminum by decompos-ing aluminum chloride with potassium. In 1854 Deville used sodium to decompose the double chloride of aluminum and sodium, but even various subsequent improvements of the process, especially by Castner, did not sufficiently decrease the cost of the metal to bring it into general use. In 1862 Monckton proposed to reduce Al O? with carbon by the aid of the electric current, but the efforts of the Cowles brothers to do so were not successful and in 1884 they turned to making aluminum alloys by electrolysis. At about the same time Hall in America and Heroult in France success-fully worked out the technology of dissolving A12O3 in fused cryolite and electrolyzing the bath. It is hard to realize that forty years ago the annual production of aluminum was only 30 to 40 tons per year and the price of the metal thirty times what it is today. Great strides in decreasing the cost of production, improving the quality of the metal, and increasing the output have been made in the lifetime of middle-aged men. The large consumption of electrical energy in the form of direct current makes it necessary to locate aluminum-producing plants near waterfalls, to avoid transmission losses. Norway with its abundant water-falls is therefore a logical place for the development of aluminum production, even though it is necessary to import the bauxite, which is the raw material of the process. It was foreigners who first started the aluminum in-dustry of Norway and the first two plants were built by the British Aluminium Co. in 1906 to 1908; one at Vigeland near Kristiansand, and the other at Stavan-gerfjord in Nordfjord. These two plants are still oper-ating and producing over 3000 tons a year. When the plant at Vigeland is enlarged the production of the company will be more than 4000 tons a year.

The interactions between oil drops and mineral surfaces have been examined for the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-quartz and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-hematite systems. The results have been interpreted using a electrical double layer interaction model, a "sweeping-penetration" model based on steric interactions and a free energy of adhesion model. The adsorption of long-chain ions at the mineral interface was also studied and found to follow a Fuerstenau-Modi model of combined Coulombic and chain-chain interaction forces. The basis of the emulsion flotation process and the feature which makes it differ from conventional flotation is: encounter, followed by adhesion, between oil drops and mineral particles which are suspended in an aqueous environment. The manner in which the adhesion between these two phases contributes to the flotation process may be through the formation of min-eral-oil drop-mineral linkages, mineral-oil drop-air bubble linkages, or a combination of both. Possible flotation mechanisms derived from these adhesion processes are shown schematically in Fig. 2 while Fig. 1 shows an example of the first mechanism for quartz particles which have been floated using a cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB)-Nujol emulsion as collector. In Fig. 2 the three phases, mineral, oil, and air, for convenience have been shown as having approximately equal size. This would not always be the case in an actual emulsion flotation operation. For the flotation of sand-sized particles of approximately 0.5 mm diam, the mineral particles would be at least ten times the size of the largest emulsion drops present in the system, while in the flotation of —10u slime particles, the mineral phase may be of the same order of size as the oil phase. The air bubbles in a flotation cell are normally about 1 to 2 mm in diam and therefore, in general, would be larger than the oil drops. Although the relative size of the three phases does not alter the basic adhesion processes between oil drops, mineral particles, and air bubbles, which depend on the physical and chemical properties of the interfaces involved rather than on the extent of these interfaces, it does alter the degree of deformation of the oil drops and air bubbles which will occur on adhesion. For mechanisms 1 and 2 to take place, the oil-water and mineral-water interfaces must be partially replaced by a mineral-oil interface while in mechanism 2 there is the additional requirement that the oil-water and air-water interfaces must be replaced by an oil-air interface. In view of the importance of the oil drop-mineral particle encounter and subsequent adhesion stages to both of the emulsion flotation mechanisms discussed, a study has been made of some physicochemical factors which control these processes for Nujol-cetytri-methylammonium bromide (CTAB)-quartz and Nujol-sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) -hematite systems. Experimental Electrokinetic Measurements.—The zeta potential of mineral particles was measured using a streaming potential technique similar to that described by Fuerste-nau.1 The streaming potential was measured using a multirange electrometer while the plug conductivity was measured using a 50 cycle sec1 bridge. Measurements were made on 28 x 65 mesh particles. Contact Angle Measurements.—A captive bubble technique was used to measure the contact angles for air bubbles and oil drops. The angles were measured on fracture faces of unmounted minerals which proved easier to clean than polished mounted specimens and should more closely represent a flotation system. The tin-deposits of Durango, Mexico, have been ably described by Mr. W. R. Ingalls in a paper published in our Transactions in 1895.* While the occurrellces of tin-ore in other parts of the Republic are similar in many resperts to those in Durango, there are noteworthy local differences which, it is hoped, ma? lend interest to the present paper. The deposits examined by me in May, 1895, are found in the Serrania de Chacuaco, Municipality of Sain Alto, District of Sombrerete. The workings are situated in a range of mountains having a general northwest to southeast trend between Sombrerete and Fresnillo; the most northerly claim (La Desparranlada) being about six leagues southeast of the former town. El Refugio lies about four leagues to the southwest, and El Calabrote eight leagues to the west, of Fresnillo. The claims are from about 8425 to 8775 feet above sea-level, and from 1500 to 1800 feet above Sain Alto, the position of which town is marked in the map printed in Mr. Ingalls's paper. In order to reach the claims, one uses the carriage-road from Sain Alto to the small tin-colony of Las Cuevas; from the latter place to the mines there is only a rough mule-track. The mountain range consists of a rugged, weathered, gray granite rock, remarkable for large grains of quartz, and is flanked by masses of rhyolite and rhyolite-tuff of upper Tertiary age. The whole formation is broken up by narrow and steep willding arroyos and deep barrancas, mainly the result of denudation, and it appears to be a southeasterlj extension of the tin-bearing belt of rocks north of Durango City. IT is well known that high residual stresses are created in tubing by the sinking process, in which no internal tool or mandrel is used.1-4 In this process, the wall thickness is usually slightly increased.4,5 In tube drawing with a plug, the residual stresses are gradually reduced with increasing reduction of wall, and, by the conventional approximation methods of stress measurement, no stress is detected in tubing in which the wall reduction is over 50 per cent of the total reduction in cross-sectional area.1-6, It has also been observed that higher stresses are set up by the use of wide-angle dies than by the use of acute dies.2 The actual stress distribution in drawn .tubing has been investigated by a few workers,7-9 but has not been related to the conditions of the drawing process: Some attempts have been made to correlate accelerated cracking tests for stresses in brass products with the magnitude of the circumferential stresses and the condition of the metal.1-10 MATERIALS AND PREPARATION The material used in this experiment was commercial cartridge-brass (70 per cent Cu, 30 per cent Zn) tubing in the straightened and annealed condition.‡ This tubing was of various outside diameters and had a wall thickness of 0.032 in. It was sunk to 1/2-in. outside diameter by means of an experimental 10,000-lb. hydraulic draw-bench, with a maximum drawing speed of 8 ft. per minute. All dies were of 1/2 -in. diameter. Various die materials and contours were used in order to study the effect of die design on residual stresses in the tubing; the specifications for the dies are given in Fig. I. Castor oil was used throughout as lubricant. Chattering occurred in sinking some of the tubing, particularly when dies having the more acute angles were used, but the tubes showing chatter marks did not differ markedly from those with a smooth surface regarding the magnitude of residual stress. The source of the chattering has not yet been revealed. The quenching technique has been used for- a study of phase velntiorzs within the composition triangle 2CaO.Fe2O3-FeO.Fe2O3 Fe2O3 of the system Ca-Fe-O. Desired total compositions of sanzples were attained by weighing of starting materials in required proportions and keeping them in sealed 80 pct Pt 20 pct Rh tubes during equilibration .runs. The liquidus surface has been delineated. the existence of two ternary compounds has been established, and seven ternary inwariant situations have been determined. ONE unit within the research program on refractory oxides in progress in our laboratories is the study of phase relations in the system Ca-Fe-Si-O. The present paper deals with the ternary system 2CaOFe2O3-FeO.Fe2O3-Fe2O3, which is only a small part of the enormously complex quaternary system. Many of the phases occurring in iron ore sinter products have compositions which can be closely approximated within this ternary system, and a knowledge of stability relations existing among these phases may be expected to be a useful guide for improving sintering operations. Two fundamentally different experimental approach es are commonly used in studies of systems containing iron oxides, both permitting control of the oxidation state of Fe. One method consists in keeping constant the oxygen partial pressure of the gas phase in equilibrium with condensed phases (liquid and crystalline). In the other method, which is the one used in the present investigation, the total composition of condensed phases is kept essentially constant by keeping the samples in a gas-tight container. The details of this experimental procedure will be described in a later section. PREVIOUS WORK Extensive studies of phase relations in the bounding binary system FeOFe2O3-Fe2O3 have been reported by Greig, Posnjak, Merwin, and Sosman,' by Darken and Gurry,2, 3 and recently by Phillips and Muan.4 A diagram summarizing the results of these studies is shown in Fig. 1. The structural changes that result when a metal is "cold worked" lead to higher values of yield and tensile strength on subsequent deformation at room temperature. Further it has been shown that the beneficial effects of cold work are, to some extent, maintained even at elevated temperatures. The strength improvements from prior cold work decrease as the temperature is raised and are a function of grain size, amount of cold work, and strain rate (or time of test). If recrystallization occurs during test, the cold-worked material may even show weaker stress-rupture properties than the annealed material. A question that arises is whether there is a significant effect on the subsequent creep behavior if the prior deformation is performed under creep conditions at high temperatures not too different than the test temperature, but at significantly different strain rates and for various amounts of strain. An answer to this question was sought in the work described in the present paper. PROCEDURE Two materials were used in this work, high-purity aluminum and a solid-solution A1 2 pct Mg alloy. The compositions are shown in Table I. The grain size in the two materials was 0.2 to 0.3 mm. The deformation for both the prestraining and for the creep tests was at constant stress. The procedure adopted was to prestrain a specimen to the desired elongation, remove the load, and cool to room temperature rapidly by spraying. the test bar with cold water. The specimen was then placed in a creep machine, held at the test temperature for less than 5 min, and loaded. Less than 15 min was required to bring the specimen to temperature. The creep stress was based on the diameter resulting from the prior strain, and values of elongation at fracture listed in the tables do not include the respective elongations resulting from the prestrain. The choice of the stresses for the prestrain and for the creep tests was made so that the tests could be completed in relatively short times to maximize any effect of prestrain. The specimens had a gage length of 1 in., the pure aluminum specimens having a diameter of 0.150 in. and the alloy specimens a diameter of 0.125 in. For pure aluminum, prestrain was at 400' and 600°F with testing at 500°F; for the alloy, prestraining was at 700°F and testing at 600°F. RESULTS The prestrain conditions for the aluminum and the alloy specimens are shown in Tables I1 and IV. In addition to showing the time required to achieve the desired prestrain, the expected rupture Lives are given which would have resulted had the creep prestrain been continued to fracture. The prestrained and the annealed specimens were then tested in creep to fracture; the temperature and stress for the pure aliminum specimens being 500o F and 1800 psi and for the alloy, 600' F and 3400 psi. The creep curves for the prestrained and the annealed specimens of pure aluminum showed all three stages of creep; hence in addition to the effect of prestraining on the rupture life, it was also possible to determine the effect of prestraining on the minimum creep rate, and on the time and elongation at the end of each of the three creep stages. The results are shown in Fig. 1 and Table 111.

The selective action of oils for lustrous minerals was first disclosed by Haynes in 1860. In 1885, Miss Carrie Everson elaborated this idea and also disclosed the fact that acid increased the so-called selective action. Her patent called for oils, either animal, vegetal or mineral, also for an acid or salt. The process was tried out on a practical scale in Baker City and Leadville, in 1889, and failed: first, because, as has since been shown, of the unsuitability of the ore to flotation; and second, because the invention was too far in advance of the times. Then followed the Elmore brothers, first with their bulk oil processes and later with their vacuum method. The basic principles of oil flotation were undoubtedly covered by the above inventors, the work done since their time being merely a building up on ground work laid by them. Different kinds of oil, different quantities of oil, and all the varying degrees of agitation, were all exemplified and practiced by them in one phase or another, and the developments that have since been made are but elaborations of the fundamental principles laid down by Haynes, Everson, and the Elmore brothers. In 1902, the Potter-Delprat process was developed in Australia. In this process no oil was used, the mineral being raised by the generation of gas, brought about by the introduction of acid into the pulp. The mineral particles appeared on the surface of the separatory vessel, in the form of a scum or froth, buoyed up by minute gas bubbles attached to them. This no doubt first gave the suggestion of gaseous flotation. In 1902, also, Froment, an Italian, was granted a patent in which he combined violent agitation with oil and gaseous flotation, the gas being generated within the pulp, in much the same way as in the Potter-Delprat process.
