IT is not often that bore hole surveys can be checked by actual civil engineering methods. A recent Arizona survey was checked by normal surveying methods and the comparison of the results should be of value to both oil and mining men. During the summer of 1948 the Phelps-Dodge Corporation, at its Copper Queen property near Bisbee, Ariz., drilled a 1245 ft, 8 in. diam, churn drill- hole in a mineralized area and cased part of it, intending to use it to transfer mill tailings for stope fill. The hole, as frequently occurs, was not straight, and, in endeavoring to locate the bottom in- the underground workings, they found no evidence of the hole at the underground coordinates directly below the surface location. The noise of the drilling tools was reasonably clear, but the direction of sound was uncertain. Preliminary tests with available equipment were not successful in locating the bottom of the hole. Be- cause of the mineralized character of the area and the fact there was some casing in the hole, any magnetic method of well surveying would give results ' of doubtful value.

The potential iron ores of Michigan can be classified from the stand-point of the predominant impurities into siliceous, sulphurous and phos-pllorous ores. Research on the flotation of each of these classes of ore was carried out in the following manner. The flotative properties of the valuable minerals of iron and of the worthless and deleterious ones were first determined under carefully controlled conditions. This information was then applied to synthetic mixtures of these minerals, which simulated the potential ores. Finally, data obtained during the two foregoing stages of the investigation were used in the flotation beneficiation of samples of the potential ores. Hematite is the most important mineral of iron in each of the above classes of iron ores. This paper deals with a study of that mineral in the very nearly pure state. There are two varieties of the mineral—specular hematite and massive hematite. The latter is the principal variety, but the former is an impor-tant' mineral of iron in some of the potential ores. Because of this condition, flotation research was performed with both varieties. This research consisted essentially of: (I) a survey of the literature on hematite flotation, (2) the preparation of pure massive hematite, (3) the preparation of pure specular hematite, (4) the development of a laboratory procedure and (5) flotation experimentation. For the purpose of this discussion, the results of previous work on the flotative properties of hematite can be summarized as follows: Specular hematite has been readily floated with terpineol and sodium oleate or heptylic acid1. Further, hematite has been likewise floated with a proprietary frother and oleic acid or other soluble oils2. METALLURGISTS are properly interested in papers dealing with subjects ranging from the theories of the metallic state to very practical details on the use of metals. A review of theoretical metallurgy naturally excludes papers concerned with the usefulness of metals and limits itself to those concerned purely with the science of metals. Even in this more limited field the reviewer is confronted with thousands of papers dealing with facts and theories of metallic behavior, from which he can select only a few hundred. The selection is necessarily highly arbitrary. Certain classes of papers definitely fall within the scope of this review. Thus, papers on the deformation of metals, on the structure of alloys, on recrystallization, to select only a few, are fully represented. Other subjects, which verge on what is generally accepted as the science of metals, such as the magnetic properties of metals, the less familiar electrical properties and theories, adsorption of gases by metal surfaces, and the like, are treated scantily. Particular attention is given to reviews of subjects that fall with in the groups chosen; in a summary such as this, which is largely in the nature of a progress report, capably written reviews are of importance, particularly since the monograph and text book literature is so meager in this field.

At a time when all those interested in the iron trade are carefully scanning the horizon for new sources of the raw material, a few words concerning a field, which though not new, has not been hitherto fruitful of statistical information, may be deemed appropriate at this meeting. The district alluded to is the belt of the Middle James River, or in other words, that portion of the ferriferous belts of Virginia lying between Josua Falls and the little settlement of Norwood, in the counties of Amherst and Nelson, and on the left bank of the James River. This region shows unmistakable signs of developing a very considerable market for iron ores and for iron in the future, as well as a tempting appearance of possible productiveness in the former. It, is extremely hazardous to deal in generalizations as to the productiveness or non-productiveness of these measures without a more thorough development than has yet been attained. It is true that they probably constitute an horizon whence comes a part of the marvellous mineral wealth of the northern peninsula of Michigan. But

INVESTIGATION of the methods of analyses for magnetite and ilmenite in the Otanmaki iron-titanium ore and respective mill products has resulted in certain improvements in the methods conventionally employed. The outcome of the investigations is summarized as follows: 1—Development of a diamond-drill core analyser for the determination of magnetic susceptibility of drill cores containing magnetic minerals. 2—Development of a magnetite-ilmenite analyser for pulverized products. 3—Development of a potentiometric method of chemical analysis for the determination of iron, vanadium, and titanium in succeeding steps from one test sample. 4—Proposal for a continuous and automatic magnetite assay method. Diamond-Drill Core Analyser The conventional method of assaying diamond-drill cores consists of splitting the cores, pulverizing them and running chemical analyses on representative samples. The physical properties of magnetic minerals, however, offer an entirely different approach to obtain similar final result by the measurement of respective magnetic susceptibilities in a properly designed instrument. This instrument is shown in Fig. 1. Essentially it consists of a magnetic unit, A, and of a meter unit, B. On top of A is a slot where a piece of diamond-drill core C is visible. The magnitude of disturbance in the original magnetic field caused by the magnetic minerals in the drill core can be observed from the microammeter. This reading is a function of the combined susceptibilities of all magnetic grains in the magnetic field. The magnetic unit is built of E-sheets of a shell transformer, as shown in Fig. 2. The primary coil and two identical secondary coils are wound around the central leg and end legs, respectively. The drill core under examination is placed into one of the air gaps as shown in Fig. 2. The number of ampere-turns of primary coil excited by 50 or 60-cycle ac give a maximum induction of about 600 gauss in the air gaps. The secondary coils are connected in series in the opposite direction. Thus their voltages compensate each other if no drill core exists in the air gap or if the susceptibility of the drill core is equal to zero. As soon as the susceptibility becomes greater than zero, the balance of the magnetic circuit is disturbed, resulting in increased voltage in the terminals of coil 1 and in a respective decrease of voltage in the terminals of coil 2. The voltage difference thus produced is a function of the effective susceptibility of the drill core. If the magnetic grains in the drill core are unevenly distributed, the voltage difference varies as the core is rotated around its own axis. The voltage difference is measured with a Bren-tan0 tube voltmeter. If extreme sensitiveness is desired, the established symmetry of the magnetic circuit does not allow reduction of the 0-voltage difference far enough. Pearlite morphology in three commercially produced, low-carbon steels has been studied using optical and electron microscopy. A reduction in the cooling rate from 600° to 6°C per hr increased the interlamellar spacing but had little effect on pearlite content. The form of the lamellae was also assessed in terms of a new parameter, the ratio of lamellae length to interhmellar spacing. The variation of this parameter with cooling rate depended on steel composition. For each steel, it would appear that an optimum cooling rate exists at which lamellar pearlite can be produced to the greatest extent, though not necessarily the same extent in different steels. PeARLITE morphology depends principally on steel composition, prior austenite grain size, and either cooling rate or isothermal transformation temperature. Alloying with manganese,'" fine grain size,374 and slow cooling rates reduce the likelihood that a well-developed lamellar structure will be produced. Instead, imperfect structures usually consisting of partly globular carbides are formed in a ferrite matrix. Such structures have been described as granular.1,2,5 degenerate,6 or semi4-pearlite. Manganese additions also progressively lower the eutectoid temperature and the carbon concentration at the eutectoid so so that, for a given carbon content. the pearlite fraction is increased as manganese is added. While the effects of manganese are understood in a general way, quantitative studies of pearlite morphology have been carried out mainly on steels of eutectoid composition;9 little quantitative data is available for low-carbon steels. Certain anomalies exist in the behavior of steels containing -1.5 pct Mn, however. The pearlite morphology in niobium-treated steel differs from that which is generally accepted as typical of low-carbon/manganese steels in that a reasonably well developed lamellar structure is sometimes observed. In the present work, the effects of changes in cooling rate from 600° to 6°C per hr on the pearlite morphology in three commercially produced, low-carbon steels have been studied by both optical and electron microscopy. I) MATERIALS The steels were of the following types: 1) 0.1 pct C, 0.4 pct Mn steel (En 2, a composition similar to specification SAE 1010); 2) niobium-treated, 0.2 pct C, 1 1/2 pct Mn steel (BS 968:1962); 3) silicon-killed 0.2 pct C, 1 1/2 pct Mn steel (En 144, a composition similar to SAE 1320). The chemical analysis for each steel is given in Table I. To facilitate the comparison of pearlite morphology in the three steels, steels 1 and 3 (which were obtained as 1/2-in. plate and 1-in.-diam bar, respectively) were hot-rolled in the laboratory to $ in. thickness, finishing at around 850°C. The BS 968:1962 was received as 1/8-in. plate finished at 885°C and was not further worked. Specimens from each steel were heat-treated in vacuo at 950°C for 1 hr and cooled at rates of 600°, 60°, and 6°C per hr. 11) EXPERIMENTAL Pearlite contents were determined by point counting (500 points) on longitudinal sections mechanically polished and etched in 2 pct nital. Pearlite morphology is usually considered in terms of interlamellar spacing. For pearlite colonies randomly distributed in space and having a true, constant interlamellar spacing So Pellissier et al.9 determined the distribution curve for the apparent spacings of the lamellae on a random section plane. About thirty miles north of the city of Belleville (which is situated on a branch of Lake Ontario), and in the township of Marmora, Ontario, there is found a belt of gold-bearing quartz veins, which present geological mineralogical, and economic features of great interest to the profession. The district in which these veins are found is characterized as a rolling country, with low rounded hills of syenitic granite, overlain on the flanks of the hills by Silurian limestones, which lie in nearly horizontal beds, and in some places are so fine in texture as to afford lithographic stone of a fair quality. The gold-bearing veins run north and south through this belt of syenitic granite, and are quartz-filled true fissures, with micaceous or talcoid slates forming the walfs of and horses in the veins. EXTENSIVE and diversified resources justify large populations and great industries. To carry on the business of commerce and meet the demands of large populations, the utilization of tunnels in some form for transportation purposes constitutes an important link in modern civilization. The driving of tunnels has been appropriated by the tunneling branch of the heavy-construction industry, and the progressive steps taken by modern tunnel builders were not even dreamed of 50 years ago. Great strides have been made toward more rapid progress in tunneling in the United States during the past 10 years. Tunneling consists of a definite cycle of operations developed from ideas that are crystallized and translated into action programs through various engineering phases that begin with the first preliminary survey and do not end until the job is completed. Once the line of the bore is established and a time set for the completion of the work, the face must advance according to estimates prepared before the work commences. This schedule must be followed in regular sequence from the moment the drills start against a new face of rock until they are ready again to drill the succeeding face, constituting a round.1 Mining is largely tunneling carried on under conditions often more inherently hazardous than actual tunnel construction, but for various reasons1 tunneling is more hazardous than mining in any branch of the mineral industry, On the other hand, obstacles are sometimes encountered in heavy-construction tunneling projects that when met in mining enterprises do not offer comparable tasks to avoid or overcome them. One of these is the existence of water under high pressures. In mining enterprises, various alternatives offer a solution in driving a tunnel, even to the extent of its discontinuance or the abandonment of the mine, but a "construction" tunnel usually must go forward because some important project depends largely if not entirely upon it. This paper describes an unusual method of driving a water-supply tunnel through rock carrying water under pressures and conditions that did not permit the use of ordinary tunneling methods. THE DELAWARE AQUEDUCT The new Delaware aqueduct is a Manhattan project of some magnitude; when completed, it will contain what probably will be, for some time to come, the longest tunnel in the world. Various features in its construction are currently described in the trade journals of the construction industry, and informative engineering details are given in the Delaware Water Supply News, published twice a month by the Board of Water Supply of the City of New York. Work was begun on this project on March 24, 1937. The tunnel will convey water from reservoirs at the headwaters of the Delaware River to the City of New York.

THE importance of the pressing operation in the forming of articles by powder metallurgy depends to a great extent on the type of product to be made. While in some few cases the pressing is merely a means of compacting loose powder particles into a solid mass preliminary to a sintering treatment in most applications it constitutes a molding operation with the purpose of shaping the raw material in powder form into a certain predetermined, accurately defined part not altered in shape by sub- sequent sintering. In still other cases, no pressing at all but sintering in molds gives useful articles. A limited number of products are made by the simultaneous application of pressure and heat. The factors that control the product of the pressing operation are raw material, lubricant, type, size and shape of die and compact, magnitude and time of application of pressure, as well as temperature of pressing. All such factors need to be con- trolled; yet, depending on the function of the pressing operation, greater emphasis may be placed on processing factors other than the pressing operation. In any complete discussion of pressing, subsequent sintering cannot be disregarded. For the sake of brevity, the present paper has been limited to the mechanics of pressing and only occasionally refers to sintering. For the same reason, hot-pressing has been omitted as beyond the scope of this paper. In any survey of the literature on the pressing of metal powders, the 1938 paper of Balshin1 on the theory of the process of pressing deserves mention. The first attempts at an interpretation of pressing phenomena were made by Balshin1 and Rakovski.2 The experimental results of both are of great interest. Since the experimental results are not described, the work was repeated, using our own interpretation of the possible techniques, and is reported in the following pages. The basic theory of Balshin,1 based on a hydro- dynamic analogy, however, leads to but another way of plotting density and pres- sure against height of a pressed compact. Since it does not give any new insight into the phenomena, nor account for the influence of side-wall friction, a discussion of the theory has been omitted from this paper. DENSITY GRADIENTS IN COMPACTS The process of pressing metal powders in a die (disregarding for this consideration the powder filling and ejection operations) may be divided into three phases: (I) packing, (2) elastic and plastic deformation, (3) cold-working with or without fragmentation. Tensile properties of Aluminum Powder Metallurgy (APM) products at 600°, 800°, and 1000°F were lowered by cold reductions of as little as 10 or 20 pct. The detrimental effect of cold work on yield strength at elevated temperatures increased with temperature. Heating cold-worked products at 850° to 1150°F removed the structural effects of cold work through the process of recovery and restored, at least partially, the strength at 600°F to the level of hot-worked material. Material containing 5 pct A1203 was recrystallized by cold reductions of 97 pct or more followed by annealing at 1100°F. Recrystallization lowered sharply the strength at room temperature, but raised the strength at 600°and 800°F relative to that of the cold-worked state The high strength of Aluminum Powder Metallurgy (APM) products at elevated temperatures'-4 is well-known. In this paper, some conditions of processing that can affect this important characteristic are presented. The following nomenclature will be used to identify different alloys: All of the above alloys are of the aluminum-aluminum oxide type made from milled powders of commercially pure aluminum with the exception of M486, which is fabricated from atomized A1-Fe alloy powder. The products made from milled powders are hardened by a dispersion of aluminum oxide par- ticles in the aluminum matrix, while the intermetal-lic compound FeAL is the dispersion hardening agent in M 486.' The process used for making all APM products involves the application of heat and pressure to form a compact from powder which is fabricated into an extrusion, sheet, strip, or wire by standard techniques. Probably the most common cold-worked APM product is sheet. Cremens, Bryan, and rant' determined the room-temperature tensile properties and the 600°F stress-rupture properties of XAPOOl and XAPOO3 sheet and reported that there was little difference between the as-extruded, cold-worked, and annealed at 1200°F conditions. On the other hand, Emmons6" found that the tensile and stress-rupture properties of XAPOOl and XAPOO3 sheet at 600" and 800°F were lower than those of extrusions. The tensile properties of XAPOO3 sheet were also determined at elevated temperatures by Doyle' and ~ayward.' According to Friske" and Kendal et a1.," cold working by swaging, rolling, and tube drawing reduced the tensile and creep-rupture strength of XAP 001 Recrystallized aluminum powder metallurgy products are rare because the dispersion in the aluminum matrix is usually too fine, uniform, and concentrated to permit recrystallization. However, Lenel12 was able to recrystallize wires made from aluminum powders containing about 1.75 and 3.0 pct oxide and found that the tensile properties at room temperature remained higher than those of annealed commercially pure aluminum because of the dispersed oxide particles. Westerman and Lenel13 found the kinetics of recrystallization of the powder products were very different from those of cold-drawn commercially pure aluminum wire. The alloy containing 3.0 pct oxide recrystallized to a very coarse grain size was more creep-resistant at 400" to 600°C (752" to 1112°F) than in the as-extruded, fine-grained condition, according to Ansell and weertman.14 Ansell and aenel" further studied creep at 500" to 620°C (932" to 1148°F) of recrystallized 1.75 pct oxide wire and confirmed the creep model of Ansell and Weertman. Drilling tests with a 11/4-in. diameter roller bit were performed on Berea and Bandera sandstones and Leuders limestone using water and two conventional drilling muds as circulating fluids to evaluate the influence of dynamic filtration on penetration rate. The muds possessed widely differing API fluid-loss properties. Mud filtrate was constrained to flow beneath the bit; no filtrate flowed radially through the borehole wall. Rock pore pressure at three different locations ahead of the bit, cumulative filtrate volume, borehole pressure and bit location were monitored during drilling. The rock samples, cored in three orientations with respect to bedding planes, possessed a wide range of liquid permeabilities. and were drilled at borehole-to-formation pressure differentials of 0, 250, 500 and 1,000 psig. The effect on penetration rate of API fluid loss, borehole pressure and rock permeability was studied. Rock permeability damage and pore pressure gradients beneath the bit were evaluated. The importance of borehole-to-formation pressure differential was illustrated for each drilling fluid and rock permeability combination. Penetration rates decreased with increased borehole pressure and reduced fluid loss. The observed penetration rate reduction due to changing fluid Ioss was attributed to decreased filtrate flow and improved mud cake plastering hy the low fluid-loss mud. The reduction in filtrate flow could not be related to spurt-loss phenomena. Rock permeability influences penetration rate through particle invasion ahead of the hit, which damage leads to high pressure gradients. Penetration rate variance with sample orientation was evident for water-drZled samples but less obvious for mud-drilled rocks. Permeability damage beneath the bit ranged from 1 to 3 cm. Maximum damage occurred in the first 0.1 cm. Pressure gradients varied with API fluid 10.s.s and could be correlated with penetration rate. The pressure gradient was found to influence penetration rare in rocks of all permeabilities tested. INTRODUCTION Early microbit and small-scale drilling experiments proved to be invaluable contributions to understanding the mechanics of drilling at depth. For example, the effect of borehole-to-pore pressure differential on drilling rate was demonstrated conclusively by Murray and Cunningham', Eckel' and others .' However, the effects of various drilling fluid properties on drilling rate, particularly filtration, have not been studied extensively on a laboratory basis. Microbit correlations of penetration rate with different viscosity and API fluid-loss muds led EckelV o conclude that viscosity and density. more than API fluid loss, were the most important fluid properties in controlling drill bit penetration rates. Ferguson and Klotz6 studied filtration beneath the bit and stated that the maximum amount of filtrate which could conceivably flow beneath a drilling bit could be described by a potential function associated with flow from a moving disc source. and be characterized by a depth-of-filtrate invasion. Invasion depth is a function of penetration rate, formation porosity and permeability, flooding efficiency, pressure difference between borehole and formation and borehole radius, assuming that no filtrate flows through the borehole walls. Electric analog and experimental measurements were obtained, assuming no plugging of the formation pores. Theoretically, filtrate invasion was predicted to extend from 1- to 15-hole radii beneath the cutting surface; experimental results indicated that the extent of invasion was only Y2 in. Comparing these data with results of core-plugging experiments by Norwak and Krueger' led Ferguson and Klotz to state that the drilling operation apparently contributes to higher filtration rates than are observed in nondrilling core filtration tests in which the core face is jetted and scraped. Glenn and Slusser: in describing a linear filtering system in which a rotating bit continuously scraped mud cake from the surface but did not penetrate Alundum cores, stated that mud-solids invasion and permeability damage of the cores were most severe in the first 2 to 3 cm. The filtrate flow rate through the core was found to stabilize after sufficient time had elapsed for the formation of an internal mud cake whose effective permeability was estimated to be 50 to 300 times as high as that of bulk filter cake. Krueger and Vogel reported core permeability damage depths up to 12 in. during a 5-day exposure period in which filter cake buildup was prevented. Havenaar pointed out that the discrepancy between reported and calculated values of filtrate volume obtained in the experiments of Ferguson and Klotz was due, among other things, to failure of the reported API fluid loss to truly represent filtration beneath the bit. In the early part of 1893, I had occasion to make for the owners a professional examination of the Rich Patch tract; and, with their permission, I present in this paper, omitting the commercial portions of my report, those portions which may be valuable to future students of that region. Location, Topography And Geology. The Rich Patch tract comprises about 9000 acres, located about 3 miles west of Low Moor, on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, in Alleghany county, Va., and immediately adjoining the Low Moor property. In shape the tract is roughly quadrangular, being about 3 miles broad in a northerly and southerly direction, by about 6 miles long from east to West. Potts creek and Jackson river run along its northern boundary. It is drained by Hayes Gap run, Mill branch and Laurel creek, which flour north into Potts creek, and by Karnes creek, which flows northeasterly through the Low Moor property into Jackson river. The topography of the tract is shown by the accompanying map (Fig. I), and need not be described here. The valleys are cut down from 1000 to 1500 feet below the mountain summits, which generally reach an altitude of about 3000 feet above tide. The geological structure of the district is indicated by the geological cross-sections shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These sections show that the formations underlying the property extend from the Lower Silurian lin~estones up to the Devonian slates, including the numbers of the Paleozoic system of rocks as defined by the geological surveys of Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York, from No. 11. to No. VIII. • No. IX. For more than 25 years modern mining has been carried on in the Island of Cyprus, Mediterranean Sea, by the Cyprus Mines Corp. of Los Angeles, Calif. The general features of these operations have been described.' From 1935 to June 30, 1940, top slicing in the Mavrovouni mine produced in excess of 2,000,000 long tons. The rate for the last part of this period was approximately 50,000 tons per month. Description of Ore Bodies The shape Of the Ore body now being top sliced in the Mavrovouni mine is an inclined irregular pyritic pipe or chimney of large dimensions) extending from unknown depths below the bottom level at elevation 250 ft below sea level) to the highest level at elevation 400 ft above sea level. The present surface above the ore body lies between 550 and 650 ft elevation. Undoubtedly the Ore body extended to surface and was Mined by the ancients by opencast and underground methods. The old pits were gradually filled up by erosion until now they show as slight depressions in the topography. The largest area of the Ore body is at elevation 170 ft below sea level, where the horizontal section is almost elliptical, with a width of 600 ft and a length of 1000 ft. Below this elevation the shape of the ore body continues to be elliptical but with reduced dimensions. Above this elevation it rises flatly towards the south with a substantial depression in the upper-side of the chimney and irregular ridges or wings rising on each side. It gradually grows smaller as it rises. The ore body is a pyritic replacement of andesitic extrusives which occur as flows and pillow lavas. With the exception of the upper portions of one or two small offshoots rising from the main ore body, all ore is completely surrounded by andesite. Most of the andesite lying above the ore body is covered by marl and Clay sedimentaries of Miocene and later age, The Miocene is presumed to be older than the ore mineralization. That portion of the andesites which lies between the sedimentaries and the ore body has been broken by slumpage, and weathered, and iron-Stained by the descending meteoric waters, It is a mass of crushed material that caves and follows downward readily as the top-slice stopes retreat. The main ore body is a heavy cupreous pyrites mass assaying on the average about 4.0 pet Cu; 48.0, S; and 42.0, Fe. In places the copper drops below 1.0 pet. on the borders of this heavy sulphide ore body lie disseminated cupreous pyrites ore deposits of large dimensions. some portions of these appear to be closely related to the heavy sulphide ore, as the ratio of copper to pyrite is about the same. The greater part of the disseminated ore, most of which lies immediately to the east of the main Ore body, contains less than 0.10 pct Cu and about 25.0 to 30.0 pct S. 'This probably can

Hard-won experience in the operation of smelting plants has pointed the way to the most efficient design and economical operation of a baghouse system for recovery of metallurgical fumes. This paper treats of the principles governing bag filtration and the factors most directly affecting bag life. Methods for temperature conditioning of smoke previous to filtering are described and the evolution of bag shaking mechanisms is brought up to date. THE history of the bag filter process, as applied to the recovery of metallurgical fumes, goes back to 1876, when the Lone Elms Works of Joplin, Missouri, erected a two-section baghouse for filtering fumes from Scotch Hearth lead smelting furnaces. By modern standards this installation was crude, but the basic operating principles remain essentially the same today. Great progress, however, has been made in the mechanization of the process by the use of devices for mechanically and automatically cleaning bags of adhering fumes, in the use of instruments for recording and controlling the variables affecting baghouse operation, and in the conditioning of the smoke previous to filtering. The principles governing bag filtration of fumes were investigated in 1929 by A. J. Seitz of American Smelting and Refining Co., and he arrived at the following conclusions: 1. Pressure on Bags at Constant Volume: The rate at which the pressure builds up in a bag with constant volume is directly proportional to the time, with the same kind of smoke and dust burden (fig. 1). 2. Pressure on Bags for Change in Volume: With equivalent smoke and dust burden, the bag pressure increases with the square of the increase in volume. The rapid increase in pressure is due to (1) increase in volume, (2) increase in amount of dust on the bag, and (3) more intense packing of the dust at higher velocity (fig. 2). 3. Effect of Intensive Filtering on Pressure: Since the pressure builds up directly as the square of the volume, with the same smoke and dust burden, it is necessary to shake the bags in that increased ratio, and vigorously, to keep the pores of the bag open and pressure down. This increases the wear on the bags and the dust losses. 4. Effect of Shaking on Dust Losses: The losses are in direct proportion to the frequency of shaking because the loss takes place immediately after shaking, before the bag seals itself. Tests show that with hand shaking the last 20 pct of the removable dust requires seven times more shaking per unit weight of dust than the first 80 pct. 5. Effect of Fineness of Dust on Losses: The fineness of the dust particle increases the loss in two ways: (1) When the bag is clean a greater percentage of it will pass through before the bag seals itself; (2) fine material penetrates farther into the bag pores, building up pressure faster and necessitating more shaking, thereby increasing the loss. The physical principle of operation of the bag filter is simply the separation of solids from a gaseous carrier through a porous medium, and is analogous to the filtration of solids from liquid carriers. As a consequence the movement of industry and especially recreational industry, so important to the population of these areas as an alternative means of livelihood, is impeded. 2. It is instrumental in effecting a series of reactions, which bring about the degradation and ultimately result in the spontaneous combustion of bituminous coal in storage. 3. It contributes to the breaking and shattering of the coal structure and is one of the causes of roof falls and floor lifts in mines. 4. It is the primary cause of the many nuisances associated with gob piles and the refuse of cleaning plants. 5. Its proper control and application might possibly be employed in the preparation of coal to reduce the inorganic sulphur content. The research that has been conducted on the oxidation of the various forms of iron sulphides is extensive and the literature voluminous. Nevertheless, few efforts have been made to determine experimentally and with some precision the mechanism of the reaction under the conditions of its occurrence in bituminous coal mines. It has generally been accepted that the oxidation of pyritic sulphur proceeds according to the reaction 2FeS2 + 2H2O + 7O2 ? 2FeSO4 + 2H2SO4 [1] The ferrous sulphate in the drainage streams is further oxidized by air to produce ferric hydroxide and more acid. Yet the literature fails to disclose any pertinent investigation on the mechanism of this reaction. The present contribution is concerned primarily with this aspect of the problem and while the work to be reported is not yet complete, it has yielded results from which interesting and significant conclusions may be drawn.

The Ti-Al system certainly merits the investigative attention it has been receiving and this latest contribution by Blackburn is therefore to be welcomed. The titanium-rich end of the phase diagram shown here, as well as the diagram by crossley,17 Clark et a1.,18 and Tsujimoto and Adachi,29 reveal no other intermediate phase than Ti3A1, although a previous work by Ence and Margolin20 had reported an additional intermediate phase. Since then, Buerger Precession pictures of single crystals of 10.5, 11.5, and 12.5 wt pct A1 were made at New York university21 and the extinctions were found to be typical of a D6h a Ti structure. Some superlat-tice spots and/or streaks suggesting the presence of an Mg3Cd structure, i.e., Ti3Al, were also found. Since these specimens had been quenched from the y region20 and had revealed a Ti, it was concludedz1 that y does not exist and the structures interpreted as m + y could not be so considered. The absence of normal two-phase behavior in these structures had been indicated in the paper. Accordingly, the two-phase region y + 6 becomes a + Ti3Al and there is some agreement between the results of Blackburn and of Ence and Margolin20 as to both shape and existence above 900°C of an a + Ti3Al field. Crossley 17 proposed that Ti3Al is a line compound which decomposes congruently at 900°C. It is difficult to discount entirely the fact that clear two-phase structures, varying in amount with position in the two-phase field, could be detected above 900°C by Ence and Margolin.20 Precipitation during quenching could not have been so regular and the twin-phase syndrome17 does not apply. The heat treatment and quenching technique was essentially the same as was used by Crossley, whereas Blackburn, who used a rapid quenching procedure, also showed a two-phase a + Ti3A1 field above 900°C. If the two-phase field exists above 900° C, it is easy to picture a two-phase field which could account for the data of Crossley below 900°C without invoking a line compound existence of Ti3A1. All that would be necessary would be an 0 + Ti3Al/Ti3Al boundary which curved sharply to higher aluminum contents below 900° C. It is clear that the controversy must be solved by techniques which obtain data at elevated temperatures without quenching. It is conceivable that the difference in width of the a + Ti3N fields reported by Blackburn and by Ence and Margolin is due to the longer annealing times used by the latter investigators. FROM the first to the last meeting of t h e Rocky Mountain Club John Hays Hammond served as president. He guided its deliberations when there were any, but that always y o u n g organization was never particularly deliberate. Youth never is. And the Club was the embodiment of the youthful spirit of the West, which considers any- thing can be done if there be but the will to do it. Ham- mond and the others came out of the West, but they, brought the West with them P and in all the far countries in which he has served his profession and in all the honorable offices in which he has served his country, he lived true to the ideals under which he was raised. A Californian, born in San Francisco in 1855, the son of an army officer, Major Richard Pindell Hammond, educated in the public schools of his native city, at Yale, and at Freiburg, he turned early and quickly to mining. He served his apprenticeship as all successful mining men do, as assayer, surveyor, as assistant in ex-aminations and later as principal, and finally as mine manager. Even in those days of beginnings, his future world-wide career was foreshadowed in that Mexico as well as California served as his training school. His first major step up the ladder was in connection with the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mine, where he served in various positions finishing as president and considerable owner. It was from this great lead mine that he was called to South Africa, where he remained a number of years and was the technical expert who guided the great enterprises of Barnato Brothers and Cecil Rhodes. The story of his activity in developing the "deeps" of the Rand and in opening Rhodesia has been often told but is always an alluring one of adventure and accomplish-ment. After his famous escape from death at Johannes-burg as a member of the Reform Committee, he went first to London and later returned to the United States representing both British and American capital in the purchase and development of great mines in all parts of the world. For some years he was general man-ager, consulting engineer, and director of the Guggen-heim Exploration Co., but of recent years he has oper-ated entirely on his own account and with marked success.
