THE etched microstructures of cold-worked alpha brasses, after reduc-tions in excess of about 20 per cent, exhibit dark lines or markings, which have been termed "deformation bands," "etch bands," and "strain markings." The terms will be used synonomously in this report. The markings are similar in their general appearance to etch figures found in cold-worked iron, aluminum and other cubic metals but in certain respects may differ noticeably. At reductions of from about 20 to 50 per cent in brass, they appear as straight dark lines of irregular spacing and at random directions in different grains, but apparently intimately associated with definite crystallographic planes, usually {111}, in each crystal. At higher reductions, the markings on the rolling plane tend to appear in a direction transverse to the rolling direction in all crystals but may bend away at considerable angles, particularly near grain boundaries. Samans,1 on the basis of X-ray and micrographic studies of two single crystals of brass, rolled to a 50 per cent reduction, showed that the lines of deformation were the edges of thin mechanical twins parallel to octahedral planes. Barrett and Levenson2-4 have made comprehensive studies of the deformation of iron and of aluminum. They show that in these two metals the deformation markings originate by division of the original homogeneous crystal into banded areas differing in orientation by an amount that increases with the degree of deformation. The markings thus cannot be twin bands, and Barrett, in a review of this subject,2 attributed Samans' results on brass to an accidental choice of deformation that left the bands in approximately a twinned relationship. On the other hand, Mathewson5 has suggested that in some cases mechanical twinning offers a better rationalization of the coverage of some (111) pole figures of worked brass than the assumption of band rotation into sym-metry positions. Considering next a deformed and annealed alpha brass, the most striking aspect of its microstructure is the multiplicity of twin bands.

The total estimated production of coal in the United States during the first century and a quarter of mining is shown in Table 20. This is the total of the production of the various states already shown in the various tables, and is believed to be the first statement of this sort made. No such table prepared from limited data can be accurate, but it is the writer's opinion that the totals shown are less than those actually produced. It was thought that this study would enable a reasonably accurate account of the movement of coal down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to be written. The searches made have shown that at this time the data do not exist from which such a study can be made, but some of the facts collected may be useful to future students.

THE absence of a convenient glossary of terns connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copp, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction ; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place' individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who hays favored me with ' assistance and advice. As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines-sponsored project on the utilization of "stiff" backfill to minimize potential rock burst hazards, a finite element study was undertaken to predict stresses and displacements around a stope mined up from the 5400 level of the Sunshine mine, Kellogg, Idaho. This stope was to be backfilled using a high-modulus fill. In preparation for that configuration, certain instrumentation was installed near the 5400 level to monitor stress changes. Due to untenable economics, only 2 cuts of the stope were ever made. This paper presents the results of the instrument readings taken during the first cut and compares them with the numerical predictions, as well as presents the modeling results of closure and fill stresses in the stope if it had been mined.

I. INTRODUCTION VOLCANIC origin. was among the first of the theories advanced to account for the occurrence of the salt domes of the Gulf coastal plain, northern Louisiana., and eastern Texas, and it is still being re-stated in various forms by the most recent contributors to our knowledge of the geology of such deposits. Argument has been largely by analogy and attention has repeatedly been called to the Mexican oil fields, particularly those of the Tampico-Tuxpam region, because of the occurrence of oil in close proximity to volcanic plugs in those fields, an occurrence supposed to have some resemblance to the common occurrence of oil in the salt domes of the United States. The author, having spent several months of the past year in a general study of salt domes and in a detailed study of certain domes in the United States, and having been acquainted for some time with the exploration of similar domes in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, Mexico, and with the general geology of the Tampico-Tuxpam region, Mexico, has reviewed the various theories of volcanic origin for salt domes which have been advanced to the present time. The purpose of this paper is to present such review and to discuss the supposed Mexican analogy.

This paper describes the application of amine flotation to a specific problem—that of increasing the grade of magnetite concentrates derived from an iron ore requiring extremely fine grinding for mineral liberation. Experiments conducted on an iron ore from Wisconsin had shown that concentrates containing 60 to 62 per cent iron and 12 to 14 per cent silica could be produced by magnetic separation. The residual silica occurred as quartz and hornblende, either entrained or locked with magnetite. Most advantageous utilization of the concentrate, however, necessitated that the silica content be reduced to about 5 per cent, equivalent to an iron content of 67.5 per cent. It had been demonstrated that tabling of the magnetic concentrate removed sufficient quartz and hornblende to yield an acceptable concentrate, but disadvantages inherent in tabling dictated that flotation be investigated as a substitute. The goals set for the flotation investigation were: (I) the production of concentrates of about 68 per cent iron content from the magnetic concentrate; (2) an iron recovery of about 85 per cent of that in the feed to flotation; and (3) minimum reagent cost. Both batch and continuous flotation tests were employed; the former, to establish the procedure and the latter to verify it. Although the data were obtained on a specific ore, and with a commercial application in view, it is believed that they have a bearing on other problems where amine flotation is being used or is anticipated. Samples Two samples, designated "(minus 100-mesh magnetic concentrate" and "minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate," were used for the batch experimental work. They differed only in the degree to which the crude ore was ground prior to magnetic separation. They were stored moist in steel drums in quantities sufficient for all the experimental work reported. This procedure had the advantage of allowing all tests to be made on common samples, but had the disadvantage that the individual flotation samples, because of the difference in storage time, were subject to various stages of surface alteration. Previous work had indicated that common samples were desirable for the batch studies, and it was decided that if these data appeared sufficiently promising the effect of surface alteration could be checked best by continuous tests. The size distributions and the assays of the samples are given in Table I. The minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate, on which most of the flotation tests were made, assayed 60.9 per cent iron, 13.3 per cent silica, and 0.016 per cent phosphorus. THE figures on enrollment in the engineering schools of the United States and Canada indicate that the total number of students in these schools for the current year, 1949-50, is about 10% less than it was a year ago. This year, 226 - 533 undergraduates and graduate students are studying engineering in the United States and Canada as compared with. 249,913 students last year. The paper describes a cyclic method for processing manganese ores using sodium sulphate as the basic reagent. Sodium sulphate is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell to give an anolyte sodium sulphate acid and a catholyte containing caustic soda, a part of which is carbonated in a cyclic manner to Form ash. and reduced ore is leached with the anolyte to dissolve the manganese and the impurities are precipitated by addition of catholyte. Manganese in the pregnant solution is precipitated as synthetic rhodochrosite with a carbonated catholyte, and sodium sulphate is regenerated. Calcining the manganese carbonate site a high-grade product and the carbon dioxide is returned to the carbonation step. the results of laboratory tests using cells equipped with synthetic fiber diaphragms and permselective membranes which permit transfer of using or cations during electrolysis are described. The 1963 Jackling Award lecturer describes the founding of Banner Mining Co. and its trials and tribulations before becoming an established firm. Such aspects as geological description of Banner mining areas, history of exploration and production, areas of present interest to the company and research work conducted by the company are included. Several years ago a wealthy Chinese business friend of mine purchased an interest in a proposed oil well to be drilled a great distance from his home. A few months later it came in as a producer and proved to be a huge success and materially added to his resources. I asked him why a man of his wealth should be so lucky in a venture outside his sphere of knowledge when most people of modest means never seemed to get ahead. His answer was, "Fat Hoy takes a chance." Even though this was his answer, I knew from my association with him that there were other tempering considerations which Mr. Hoy applied before making up his mind to enter any transaction. First, he was a cautious individual. He was also a great believer in details and insisted on knowing everything possible about a situation, and finally, he was what we call a very solid individual with good basic instincts and judgment. This philosophy of Mr. Hoy may be applied to most any business but especially to those engaged in a search for natural resources such as mining where great risks are involved. This article concerns events in the history and growth of Banner Mining Co., with which I have been associated for 27 years in capacities from mine surveyor to vice president. Mr. Hoy's philosophy has played a significant role in the exploration projects of this company over the years, but what is more important, the officers, directors, and controlling interests in Banner have been aggressive in their search for ore reserves. THE BIRTH OF BANNER Banner Mining Company was incorporated in September 1935 by a group of Oklahoma and Texas oil men for the purpose of exploring and developing the Bonney-Manilla mines at Lordsburg, N.M. These properties had a history of intermittent production since the first ore discoveries as far back as 1870. Most of the production from the district has come from four mines, namely, the Eighty-Five, the Atwood, the Bonney-Manilla, and the Misers Chest. The last two are now owned by Banner Mining. The Eighty-Five mine operated between 1885 and 1931, and production totalled 1,494,287 tons averaging 0.11 oz of gold per ton, 1.23 oz of silver per ton, and 2.80% copper. The vein extended for a distance of about 3000 ft northeast and was mined to a depth of 1650 ft. The Atwood mine, adjoining the Eighty-Five mine, to date has been of lesser importance as a producer, but it has been operating for several years producing high silica flux ores for a smelter. Production totalled 352,828 tons up to January 1, 1962 From the Bonney-Manilla and Misers Chest mines, owned by Banner, production through 1961 totalled 2,006,343 tons with an average grade as mined of 0.0192 oz of gold per ton, 0.760 oz of silver per ton and 2.63% copper. Banner built a 150-tpd flotation mill in 1936 after almost a year of development on the 600 level of the Bonney mine. After less than one year's operation, it became apparent that the 150-tpd rate was not sufficient to make a reasonable profit due to the marginal grade ores. The low tenor of the ore, mainly chalco-pyrite in a highly siliceous gangue, made mandatory the close control of costs in order to make ends meet. A 300-tpd unit was added to the mill in 1937, and it is still the operating unit today. The clean sulfides presented no problems in milling. A metallurgist doing research on it at the time stated that the copper minerals seemed to have a built-in desire to float. Mill recovery of copper throughout the 27 years of operation has averaged 96.23%. A PERIOD OF FORCED GROWTH World War II brought many hardships to Banner. Labor and supply shortages caused drastic curtailment in development work. Rapidly rising costs far outdistanced any relief from pegged prices which we received from Government agencies. THE increasing use of aluminum and its alloys in commercial fields has demanded a better understanding of their machining properties. This fact is exemplified by problems that have arisen in the automotive and airplane industries, but many in other fields might be cited. As pure aluminum and its alloys in their various commercial conditions show appreciable differences in their machining properties, it is not surprising that quite divergent solutions have been offered for the machining problems encountered. However, if the fundamental requirements of the most suitable cutting tools for these metals are understood, these machining problems lend themselves more readily to satisfactory solutions. Since the machining of free cutting brass and mild steel is understood by most persons accustomed to working these metals, it may serve our purpose better to first make a general comparison of the tools more commonly used in machining these metals with the tools most suitable for machining aluminum, then proceed to a more specific discussion of the individual stools.

With one shaft almost completed and another shaft being sunk, the scope of the Saskatchewan potash area is beginning to come into focus. Some 18 companies have reportedly leased more than four million acres to explore potash possibilities. PCA, farthest along, is located about 15 miles southeast of Saskatoon, and IMC has its project underway near Esterhazy in the eastern edge of the province. U. S. Borax and Chemical Corp. is also reported exploring the area. The field lies in the middle Devonian geological formation which was probed by oil companies along the 200-mile area across the province. Extensive examination began after World War II and deep drilling was started a few years later.

The propagation of pressurized fractures across a frictional interface is discussed, with emphasis on the case where an offset, or step, in the crack is produced. Theoretically, the steps can occur at regions of reduced shear strength along the interface. As a fracture is propagated toward a weak zone, extensional strain is concentrated at the edges of the zone where higher shear stresses can be sustained. Thus, when the fracture intersects the weak zone, it can be reinitiated at some small distance away on the opposite wall of the interface. The phenomenon has been studied through numerical modeling and laboratory experiments of the hydraulic fracturing process. Field observation of natural step cracks indicates that the mechanism is applicable to the genesis of jointing patterns in rock. Such features should not be confused, therefore, with steps caused by shear displacement of an interface.

The early work of Terzaghi1 showed that the true stress state of a rock can be expressed by the principle of effective stress. This principle states that effective stress is equal to total applied stress minus the pore pressure. Since the introduction of this principle, a great effort has been made to measure the pore pressure of rocks so that the true stress state can be determined. For clean, permeable sandstones, it is usually found that the effective stress principle can easily be applied. Direct measurement of the pore pressure is achieved with a hydraulic pressure device and the effective stress state thereby computed. However, for fine-grained rocks which contain large amounts of clay (referred to herein as shales), pore pressure measurements are usually quite difficult because of the adsorptive forces of the clay platelets, which produce negative internal pressures. No suitable device is known for measuring internal pressures of dry shales; the effective stress approach is therefore not feasible and data are usually presented in another form. As an example, data from compressive strength tests are presented as a function of rock wetness, rather than effective confining stress. The work of Belopoloskii2 and Colback and Wiid3 are examples of such data. It was pointed out by Lambe and Whitman4 that a better way must be found to express the effective stress of argillaceous rocks. The information presented herein is an attempt to fill that need. Various authors have been able to measure moderate negative pore pressures (0-240 psi) within rather wet, argillaceous rocks by means of various pore pressure devices. In 1961 Lambe5 resented information which shows that pore pressures in argillaceous rocks are indeed negative ; he presented values of suction pressure as low as - 14 psi. Likewise,

Phosphorus nitride has been used as a diffusant for introducing phosphorus into silicon under various conditions. It has a temperature -dependent rate of decomposition beginning in the 500°C range, increasing very rapidly above 1000 C, producing gas -eous phosphorus and nitrogen. Best control was obtained with a two-temperature arrangement, with silicon at the proper higher diffusion temperature. It is an easier compound to use than the usual P2O5 because it is nonhygroscopic and yields temperature-controlled surface concentrations together with excellent final surfaces. Surface doping nearly as high as that produced by phosphorus pentoxide has been observed for sources at 850" to 900°C. Reproducible high sheet resistances were obtained by using slow flow rates (1 linear in. per min) and staggered-baffle gas mixing with the nitride at 550°C. Both inert gas (argon, nitrogen) and oxidizing ambients have been examined. Oxygen reacts to produce anhydrous P2O5, consuming the source at a rapid rate. Nitrogen, except for short diffusion times, suppressed the dissociation reaction and sometimes produced inferior surfaces. Argon appears to be a more useful ambient. PHOSPHORUS is a common impurity atom which may be introduced into a semiconductor lattice to create a p-n junction or an nn contact region. Various investigators1-4 have described techniques which can be used with either elemental phosphorus or certain of its compounds. This paper discusses a newly available compound of phosphorus, phos- some processes silicon wafers are precoated with a phosphate glass which acts as the doping source. Although a nonoxidizing form like elemental phosphorus or a phosphine can be used, most diffusion methods usually involve the use of phosphorus pentoxide. Because of the rapid volatility of this compound, a two-step process is often used, combining a gaseous deposition to introduce a predetermined quantity of phosphorus into the silicon with a later redistribution to obtain the desired distribution and surface concentration. Such a process usually involves predepositing phosphorus at surface concentrations greater than 1020 cm-'. At such doping levels the phosphorus-diffusion coefficient appears to be strongly concentration-dependent.596 Distribution profiles5'9 for these high concentrations of phosphorus do not follow Fick's laws, having extended subsurface regions which appear electrically to be nearly uniformly doped with ionized impurity atoms. Radioactive-tracer experiments also show near-surface anomalies in the distribution profile. Additionally, it has been shown1' that the introduction of very high surface concentrations of impurity atoms into silicon (a step necessitated by the subsequent lowering of concentration during the redistribution) creates dislocations, even in material having no dislocations originally. For device fabrication the use of oxide masking introduces certain difficulties and limitations.7'8 The standard practice of using phosphorus pentoxide as an impurity source adds other problems to these because of the speed and ease with which this compound reacts with moisture present in any gas in contact with it. In fact, P2O5 is one of the fastest and most effective drying agents for gases. Because it is such an excellent desiccant, completely anhydrous phosphorus pentoxide is difficult to obtain and is even more difficult to keep dry. Adequately dry gloved boxes must be used for storage and transfer of the chemical. The presence of even traces of moisture will cause formation of phosphoric acids which, during the high-temperature diffusion, results in polyphosphoric acids of variable composition. produce attractive and consequently more salable products. It would seem, however, that if solder and babbitt were cast in closed molds, just as good practical results would be obtained by the user, without his being able to give preference to solders of unnecessarily higher grade on account of their appearance. It would be hopeless for any one. manufacturer of solder to undertake a change of this kind, but if all manufacturers of solder agreed upon it, they would be able, in my opinion, to get the users of solder to take, and to approve by their practical tests, metals containing less tin than they have been accustomed to. The same is true with regard to babbitt metals. An illustration of how, in the use of an alloy, appearance sometimes is deceptive, is to be found in the case of what may be called intermediate grades of babbitt. I am thoroughly convinced that high-tin or high-lead babbitts are better than those containing both lead and tin with relatively high percentages of each. A high-tin babbitt should not contain more than about 10 per cent. of lead, and a high-lead babbitt should not contain more than 10 per cent. of tin, unless the percentage of antimony can be correspondingly increased. The intermediate babbitts, such as those that contain from 30 to 70 per cent. of lead or tin, may give nice appearing castings that flow easily, but they have not the serviceability of the high-lead or high-tin babbitts. Their hardness diminishes very rapidly as the temperature rises, and they have a relatively low softening point due to the eutectic components present. The Cadmium Supply of the united States* C. E. Siebenthal, † Washington., D. C.—From being one of the most maligned of metals—a veritable bugaboo—cadmium has almost overnight become respectable, though its slender claim to respectability rests almost wholly on the possibility of its substitution for tin. Preliminary to any campaign for such substitution, particularly for enforced substitution, the possible supply of cadmium should be determined as closely as possible; for that reason the statistical inquiry of which this paper embodies the results was undertaken. Production Cadmium is marketed in two forms, as metallic cadmium, in sticks or bars, and as cadmium sulfide, the pigment. The metal has found its greatest field of use in this country as a component of an easily fusible alloy that is used in automatic fire extinguishers. BLEACHING clays have been used extensively in the oil-refining industries for a number of years. Their use in water purification is relatively recent and less extensive. They are frequently classified as (1) those naturally active and (2) those active after artificial activation with acid. Fuller's earths fall within the general group of bleaching clays and gradually the commercial term "fuller's earth" has been applied to natural clays originating, for the most part, in the south- eastern section of the United States. Bentonitic clays are usually classed as activable and are prevalent in the southwestern section of the United States. Bleaching clays vary considerably in chemical and physical properties throughout the country, or even in different parts of one deposit (Table 1).
