With the societal desire and drive towards low carbon energy sources, there is a growing awareness of the important role that minerals and metals will play with renewable energy technologies. Copper is an essential metal for technologies that generate energy from renewable sources, in particular for wind and solar photovoltaic energy systems. A recent report (Arrobas et al., 2017) estimated that the median increase in copper demand through to 2050 for wind technologies and for solar photovoltaics would need to be 250% and 300% respectively to meet the goal of a 2°C global temperature increase scenario compared with a 6°C global increase, which is largely an extension of current trends (IEA, 2018). The aim of this extended abstract is to demonstrate with the necessary increase in copper production for renewable energy technologies that sound sustainability performance across the global copper value chain is to the benefit of government, society and industry.CITATION:Corder, G D and Bangerter, P J, 2018. The objective of this paper is to assess the accuracy and applicability of recent state-of-art methods such as the machine learning algorithms (MLA) for mineral resource estimation. Conventional methods such as geostatistics have been predominantly used in the mining industry for this purpose with varying success. Recent advances in the use of MLA have provided a fresh approach to obtain improved accuracy in the estimation of mineral resources. Two MLA methods: the neural network (NN) and the support vector machine (SVM) have been used to estimate a polymetallic ore deposit in Alaska.The general characteristic of SVM and NN emphasises the fact that they can approximate any multivariate non-linear relation among variables. Although neural network models are able to capture the nonlinear spatial relationships that may be present in the data, they are usually difficult to optimise under sparse data settings. Of the various NN alternatives, despite their effectiveness, the model selection and estimation process is typically difficult as it involves solving complex integration and optimisation of parameters. In support vector modelling (SVM), estimating of parameters involves optimisation of a convex cost function. The working principle of SVM makes it robust against noisy and extreme value data. At the same time, it can capture the spatial distribution of ore grade more effectively with careful modelling and selection of SVM parameters.The outcome of the MLA methods were compared to those of the geostatistical ordinary kriging (OK) application to study their generalisation ability. The comparison was made using the following goodness of fit criteria: mean-squared error; mean absolute error; mean error; and coefficient of determination. The results indicated that the MLA methods may improve the predictability of ore deposits and thereby reduce the inherent risk in mineral resource estimation.

"With an ever-increasing dynamic business environment, successful stakeholder engagement is becoming more fundamental to achieving desired outcomes in today’s mineral resource industries. It is imperative to be proactive in correctly identifying all stakeholders and initiating early contact. This builds trust relationships, which are essential to ensure future decision-making processes are streamlined.Often neglected is a company’s obligation to select the correct team to represent its values and mission. The company requires representation that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to its operations and people, the safety and health of the community and environment, and most importantly, represents the decision makers. Stakeholders need to believe that the engagement process is genuine and that the company representatives are aligned towards targeted outcomes that will benefit all stakeholders in some way.Among others, stakeholders include shareholders, staff, families, community, service and supply providers, regulators, land managers and the political/financial framework. Depending upon the mineral product, stakeholders may include ports, international offtake clients and those along the route. New stakeholders continually evolve during mine life, and the engagement process requires an investor–community–public relations (IR/CR/PR) team to anticipate change and actively scan perception and chatter.Successful communication is more than delivering a message; it is about engaging stakeholders and confirming the feedback loop to ensure the correct message is communicated and the relationship is strengthened.The nature of the mining company’s branding and the public’s perception of company intentions will dictate whether there is willingness to allow the company to follow its desired path. This in turn controls the company’s most scarce resource – time. Underground fractured aquifers in the Ernest Henry deposit are to a large extent controlled by deposit scale brittle structures. The underground mine has been subdivided into nine water zones based on hydrogeological characteristics, including conductivity and connectivity, within the mining areas bound by these structures. The nine water zones and the hydrological characteristics of the associated structures are utilised for risk assessing mine development and for targeting diamond drilling dewatering activities. Wireline and conventional underground diamond drilling techniques have been used throughout the network of underground aquifers with the aim of dewatering areas within the mining footprint. These dewatering drilling campaigns have historically been highly successful at lowering aquifer water levels throughout the underground workings. As part of recent mine expansion activities, diamond drilling has intersected high pressure (>507 psi), high temperature (>50°C) and high flow water (>3 L/sec) in as yet unconstrained underground aquifers. Groundwater is typically conducted through rubble and clay rich faults, further hampering progression of drilling. Drilling through fractured aquifers at depth presents both mine planning as well as safety challenges. Recent drill holes have been delayed or abandoned when aquifers hosting this high pressure, high flow water have been intersected, risking mine planning deadlines. Recent technological innovation developed to control groundwater outflows from the diamond drill hole whilst drilling has been trialled at the Ernest Henry Mine. This case study focuses on the utilisation of alternative drill methodologies to allow the current drilling campaign to continue without delay, whilst also improving safety conditions encountered on the drill site.

TheSouthern Alps in the South Island of New Zealand are currently rising rapidly as a consequence of continental collision along the Pacific-Australian plate boundary. Rapid uplift has resulted in a major thermal anomaly in the shallow crust beneath the alps. Alpine topography and associated intense precipitation, coupled with the thermal anomaly are responsible for vigorous combined topographic/convective circulation of water through the shallow crust.   Uplift is greatest in a wedge-shaped region between the Alpine Fault and an associated second-order backthrust system, the Main Divide Fault Zone, approximately 20 km to the east. The Main Divide Fault Zone is segmented into NNE and NE striking faults, which are regionally sub-parallel to the Alpine Fault, but dip northwest in the opposite direction. Reverse oblique-slip on the Main Divide Fault is in an easterly direction, with a greater component of strike-slip movement on the NE trending faults. Elevated topography in the Mt Cook region is related to thrusting of a relatively homoclinal sequence of semi-schistose rocks on top of lower-grade greywacke, which controls the position of the Main Divide. Tectonically induced fluid flow resulted in only minor alteration and hydrothermal mineralisation of fault-rocks in Alpine and Main Divide Faults, and localised deposition of quartz and/or carbonate in the immediate hangingwall.   The wedge between the Alpine and Main Divide Faults is segmented by third-order structures north of the Mount Cook region. A series of right-lateral (-085/700S) and left-lateral (-150/600SW) faults, which are synthetic and antithetic to the Alpine Fault, respectively, developed as a conjugate set during uplift. Fluid-flow in the Southern Alps is controlled by these third-order fault/fracture systems. Cu-Au mineralisation, hydrothermal veins, and surface hot spring activity are localised by third-order fault/fractures and appears to be enhanced where conjugates intersect.

Obviously, the paramount advantages of contract mining have been recognised by mine developers throughout Australia, as evidenced by surface gold mining operations of significant output almost exclusively being performed under contract. These paramount advantages of using an experienced professionally managed contractor result from the mine developer being freed from financing the required relatively large capital expenditure at current relatively high interest rates or in a capital scarce stock market, and from the need to recruit and sustain a large operating work force in a competitive labour market.

To obtain the combustion process of a coal fire, a high-temperature programmed system is used to simulate the spontaneous combustion process of fresh and weathered coals. Both fresh coal and weathered coals from Liulingou, Inner Mongolia, China, were used to examine the gas releases from constant temperature to 650°C. Moreover, gas release rate was used to calculate the characteristic temperatures. The results showed the coal samples lasted to oxidise under high temperatures, and released plenty of heat to assist self-heating. The humic acid contained inside the weathered coal went through thermal decomposition as temperature rising and generated gases. This resulted in increasing concentrations of CO, CO2, CH4, C2H4, and C2H6. Changes of CH4, C2H4, and C2H6 gases were also similar. For weathered coal, concentrations of three gases were kept in balance under low temperatures, increased rapidly with the temperature rising. After the ignition temperature, the concentration of hydrocarbon was reduced. In addition, particle size affected coal spontaneous combustion. Coal samples with less than 0.9 mm in size produced much more CO than others. The suitability of char from Yallourn brown coal as a filler for carbon electrodes used in the aluminium smelting industry has been assessed on the basis of the specifications usually laid down by electrode manufacturers for petroleum coke fillers. The purity specifications can be met by a simple acid leaching of the coal before carbonization. The true density of char produced at 1200°C is within 5 per cent of the specification figure, but the bulk density of char obtained from as-mined coal is only half that specified for petroleum coke.Although this can be increased to three-quarters of the specified figure by briquetting the coal before carbonization, further increases would be very difficult to achieve, as the remaining shortfall in density is due to an extensive microporosity developed in the particles of char during carbonization.

Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

Blast exclusion zones are instrumental in protecting equipment and personnel. When there is no constraint in footprint, the exclusion zone can be enormous, practically eliminating the hazard of flyrock. Unfortunately, this may not always be the case and in many circumstances the blast design needs to be altered to suite such scenarios. When a conservative design approach is taken, it could completely eliminate any form of ejection, whether it is from the free face or the bench itself. The degree to which typical flyrock models describe fragment motion through air with ballistic flight equations are not justified when such a high level of control is applied. This paper examines the issues involved in the technical audit and valuation of exploration prospects. Certain methodologies are more appropriate to use depending upon whether the mineral property valuation is of an exploration area, a project under development, or an operating mine. Valuation approaches that are reviewed include the Multiple of Exploration Expenditure, Joint Venture Terms, Rules of Thumb, and particularly the Kilburn Rating Method. The DCF/NPV Financial Simulation Method, even modified by the use of Expected Values, is not considered appropriate for valuing exploration prospects. The choice of the most appropriate methodology and its successful application depends primarily upon the amount of reliable input data available and, more importantly, the experience and judgement of the valuer. It must be remembered that all valuations are time and circumstance specific and will be generally subject to revision as more data becomes available.

From time to time failures occur in structures made of lead, and the failure may be due to corrosion involving a definite thinning of the lead sheet, or it may be of such a nature that cracks develop and the lead appears to disintegrate. The idea of lead cracking will at once suggest something abnormal, for common experience shows that this metal is very ductile and will withstand considerable bending without showing any sign of fracture. Cracking, on the other hand, is usually associated with brittleness.Fig. 1 is a natural-size photograph of a cracked sheet of lead. Prior to photographing, the sheet was etched byimmersion in a solution of ammonium molybdate. Several characteristics of this crack will be evident. First of all it is distinctly a zigzag crack, and secondly it passes between, rather than through, certain well-defined areas which appear bright in the photograph. This is particularly noticeable at the lower end where the crack appears to terminate.

For more than 15 years after the Northparkes orebodies were first discovered in 1976, the project was delayed by the need to find an economic way of mining the low-grade E26 deposit. The decision to use a low-cost block caving method to mine the orebody was made in the early-1990s; but the project's future did not solidify until 1993 when a radical new approach was adopted which sought to integrate business imperatives with technology and organisation strategies. The approach led to the establishment of a strategic vision which tied together all the components that could have a major impact on the project, to provide a framework for guiding strategic choices. The strategic vision strived to break away from the old rules of how mines are organised and operated; and involved finding imaginative new ways to radically redesign mining processes to achieve quantum leaps in performance.

Thermo Fisher Scientific is the worldÆs leading supplier of analysers for laboratories and process industries. The companyÆs X-ray fluorescence (XRF)-based slurry immersion probes were originally developed by the acquired Amdel Instrumentation. These analysers have found limited application within wet beneficiation plants for measurement of iron. The recent trend of renewed efforts to maximise recovery from existing resources and lower costs has increased industry interest in online analysis. In the mid-1990s the company developed online analysers (the light element slurry analyser û LESA) for slurry applications using the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method. The company has successfully installed LESA for the direct measurement of lighter impurity elements in Brazilian plants using flotation for rejection of silica. A case study is presented. The PGNAA technique has the unique ability to provide elemental analysis of bulk materials on a conveyor belt. The company released its eighth generation cross belt Omni analyser using PGNAA in 2007. Results from a recent project with sinter are presented. The Niton range of hand-held XRF analysers is also supplied by Thermo Fisher Scientific. These handy devices are finding widespread use in the mining industry to provide quick and easy analyses in exploration settings. In contrast to PGNAA this is a surface technique. A prototype for light element analysis is being tested for iron ore.

A test on Taylor's rule of mine life using published data on open pit porphyry copper mines confirmed that mine life is, on average proportional to the fourth root of reserve tonnage. Deviations from this rule-of-thumb occur to a large extent as variations between regions that are qualitatively explained in terms of differences in grade, infrastructural needs or special taxation effects.

Currently, Kanieri Gold Dredging Limited operates the only large scale gold dredging operation in New Zealand. It dredges a claim in the Taramakau River using the bucket dredge 'Kanieri'. This dredge, a 'Yuba' type, was designed and built in the 1930s. On the current claim it works about 12 hectares of ground a year. Because of its design, the tailings from the 'Kanieri' make land restoration difficult. This was unimportant until it commenced its new claim ML-32-310 in 1978. The conditions, attached to this licence required it to restore the land for afforestation, the designated use fur the Crown land being mined. With the company planning to work future claims on the Grey River, it decided to undertake restoration work on the Taramakau to demonstrate its capability of establishing pasture land on tailings, a more difficult task than restoring the land for afforestation. After two years and the restoration of two blocks totalling 22 hectares, reasonable pasture establishment has been achieved. Much has been learned to date and further refinement of the techniques used will take place over the next two years. The quality of the tailings produced has improved as a result of the limited modifications possible on the existing dredge. This has been significant in achieving better results. The knowledge gained will be taken into account in future dredge design. Both the Company and its Consultant are confident of achieving satisfactory restoration of dredge tailings for pasture land.

Establishing a robust geotechnical instrumentation and construction monitoring plan is one of the keys to the successful delivery of the world’s largest soft-ground bored tunnel in Seattle, Washington. The paper describes and provides a return of experience on current and best practice for monitoring tunnelling projects in urban areas. The owner’s contractual approach is discussed to highlight the flexibility of the design-built contract in achieving equal or better solutions by allowing for the use of innovative technics. Special attention is given to the management and involvement of third parties (building owners, utility owners), including the public, to overcome all challenges faced during the installation of the monitoring system in downtown Seattle for over 1000 instruments. Mining ‘as usual’, until the most recent decades has resulted in limited landform planning and a general lack of mine waste landform design. Material characterisation, mine planning and dedicated professionals undertaking these tasks were rarely available or in place at the majority of mines. This has led to landform instability, erosion, sediment and poor quality water emanating from mine landforms. In many cases rehabilitation and reclamation failed and these sites have ‘landform features’ that are difficult to relinquish or leave and have little or no apparent land use. In many cases mined landscapes around the world have resulted in a less functional and degraded environment, with deleterious impacts on surrounding ecosystems.This situation is now slowly being addressed, as global companies, academics and practitioners and their organisations have started to exploit the ideas from an integration of earth sciences and mining through the application of planning software dedicated to the design of landforms.This development has had its genesis primarily in the United States. We suggest that process has been driven, in recent decades, by the application of resources in response to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), (USA Congress 11 December 1980) and other mine reclamation legislation enacted by federal and states regulators in the USA. The combining impact has seen a huge transfer of capital back from the public purse and ‘potentially responsible parties’, into abandoned mines to affect control, remediation, and reclamation/rehabilitation of those mines.Given this investment in rehabilitation and reclamation, people engaging in the business of landform planning have had the opportunity to address landform reclamation of historic and active sites. The skills of engineers and scientists with improved technology, waste rock characterisation and modelling tools have been combined resulting in the evolution of landform design and in mine planning of active mines. This has delivered cost-effective, sustainable mine closure designs for over 30 years. Integration of mine design with an understanding of geomorphic principals and the natural landscape, coupled with waste and soil characterisation, yield a positive result. Recently work has been applied across large and small-scale projects by companies. As these processes develop, ideas and concepts are evolving that active mines, or mines in the early planning stages, could use to help reduce double handling, and in the long run reduce overall project and closure costs, more effectively attain the desired final land use, and enhance the industry’s reputation and licence to operate.CITATION:Leidich, T,?Lacy, H?and Van?Zyl,?M,?2014.
