HukkiÆs law is an empirical law, which does not take into account several events of energy loss during the fragmentation processes. Since experimental results are very difficult to obtain, for a large range of fragment sizes, the verification of the law is very difficult. The relation between fractures and fragmentation processes with fractal geometry was proposed some decades ago. Empirical laws known in this context show basic features of fractal geometry, mainly self-affinity and power law behaviour. Thus, in this work a model was developed to simulate the fragmentation process and to check the relation between energy consumption and fragment sizes. The model is represented on a regular lattice. Links can represent pathways for fracture processes. The events of fragmentation have energy given by a probability distribution function. In the model there is no mass loss. Propagation of fractures occurs as self-avoiding random walks on the regular lattice.

"The focus of this paper is on measuring the composition to improve mill feed quality to minimise the processing of waste, optimise process performance, reduce processing costs and minimise the generation of tailings.Technologies used since the 1990s in the cement and coal industries for measuring conveyed materials have been operationally proven and effectively derisked. Despite this the acceptance by the minerals industry has been very slow except in iron ore. Real-time penetrative full stream measurement using prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) for multielemental analysis and microwave transmission for real-time moisture analysis provide representative, tonnage weighted dry weight per cent results on a minute by minute basis. Analysis is unaffected by particle size, dust, layering/segregation, mineralogy and belt speed. The technologies are explained and performance examples given. The benefits derived from real-time compositional analysis are predicated upon a good understanding of deposit geology, mineralogical associations, waste to ore interfaces, amenability to mining, metallurgical processes and downstream customer requirements. Processing may include basic preparation in the case of direct shipping ores, minor beneficiation using simple upgrading methods, or concentration using more complex processing systems such as flotation, leaching or many others. The value of real-time data from primary crushed conveyed flows, using analysis of increments smaller than a single haul truck’s load, is very beneficial in process plants aiming to reduce waste processing, increasing feed grades and increasing metal recoveries. Grade variability can be utilised to divert conveyed increments of waste, direct shipping ore (DSO) quality material bypassing beneficiation, and subeconomic material amenable to upgrading diverted for further preconcentration by particle separation (sorting, heavy medium etc). Paybacks of a few months have been commonly achieved where the real-time technologies have been applied in the minerals sector. "The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. This is evidenced by a decline in the number of skilled teams, who are now centred in fewer locations. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.Trends amongst service providers will be put forward as well as developing options and alternatives. These embrace a whole gamut of agile alternatives in the areas of partnering, alliances, commercial and shared risk models and mutual innovations. These will be discussed with some case studies and suggested approaches.Particular emphasis will be upon brownfield expansions and upgrades which have emerged recently as a preferred lower capital and focused way to achieve best practical outcome at lowest cost. There are a number of specific features of such brownfields projects including the requirement for very close cooperation between the execution team, operators, maintenance and suppliers and a maximum usage of site resources and ingenuity. Often, required investment hurdle rates are high, downtime allowed is minimal and site resources usage is maximised. This requires mutual trust, good planning and high health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) standards and practice. In many ways the practices and skills needed are the exact opposite of the historical ‘big greenfields’ project with which the industry has been geared for more recently.Another developing area has been with innovative commercial models and practices. These have been as a direct result of the more challenging investment criteria being adopted and the relative hunger of service providers. It has become more common to look at these commercial/costing alternatives very early in the project cycle as an essential project tool and not just as a possible option. These commercial solutions cover such alternatives as leasing and rental, deferred payments, build–own–operate–transfer (BOOT) and build–own–operate (BOO), whole-of-mine preferred spares and maintenance terms, and aggressive performance targets with real assurance penalties. Holla has given a good background to the various methods of subsidence control in the coalfields around Sydney.The present writer notes that in many cases, especially with wide longwall panels, there is not the flexibility to alter the mine layout as there is to some degree with the various pillar extraction methods. For this reason it may not be possible to plan the workings to minimise subsidence and some damage to structures may occur. The cost of repair or the cost of subsidence provisions to minimise damage may be small in relation to the tonnages of coal which would otherwise have to be sterilised. One method of subsidence control which has been in use in the Newcastle area since 1970 is the panel and pillar layout (partial extraction layouts with stable pillars). An extracted panel width of 0.6 times the depth of cover resulted in a maximum subsidence of 115 mm for an extracted seam thickness of 2.2 m.As Holla points out, the extracted panel widths in relation to th depth of cover depend on the particular geological setting. His Fig. 3 shows that the subsidence over a panel width of 0.3 times the cover depth in the Southern Coalfield is the same as over a panel width of 0.55 to 0.6 times the cover depth in the Northern Coalfield.Selective pillar extraction and longwall mining can both be used in the panel and pillar layout. Holla's Figs 2 and 3 are used to estimate the maximum subsidence over an extracted panel of known geometry. Maximum subsidence is related to seam thickness. What provision is made for a reduction in subsidence due to the coal which remains behind in a pillar extraction panel if the pillar recovery is poor? The writer suggests that an effective seam height could be used, based on the actual mining height reduced by a factor to account for the percentage recovery of coal from an extracted panel.

In 2012, in response to an increasing potential unfunded liability, the Western Australian Government passed the Mining Rehabilitation Fund Act 2012. The intent of this Act was to introduce an annual levy on tenements covered under the Mining Act 1978 based on the area of disturbed land. The fund generated from these levies could then be used to rehabilitate mining sites where all other options to ensure rehabilitation had been exhausted. The fund could also be used to rehabilitate abandoned sites or features which, in Western Australia, number over 10 000.The Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF) was implemented on 1 July 2013 for an initial voluntary year. It becomes compulsory on 1 July 2014. By the end of March 2014, nine months into the voluntary period, over $6.5 million had been paid into the fund. The incentive for tenement holders to voluntarily enter the fund was the opportunity to have unconditional performance bonds held against their tenements retired. While there will be circumstances where bonds will continue to be applied, it is the State Government’s intention to retire most of the bonds.The MRF has received mostly accolades from industry and companies that have entered. Most have found the system easy to use. The MRF was also cited as a reason for Western Australia’s improved position in the Fraser Institute’s annual survey of mining jurisdictions. Work is now starting on processes to select priority abandoned mines for rehabilitation.This paper explains the background to the MRF and its development, and reviews its implementation during the first, voluntary, year. It also discusses how the fund will be managed into the future and what this will mean for both abandoned mine features across Western Australia and any future abandoned mine sites.CITATION:Leybourne, M L, 2014. Most world-class high-grade (60 - 67 wt per cent Fe) hematite iron ore deposits are the product of enrichment of Precambrian iron-formations but processes responsible for enrichment are still unclear. Different models, ranging from syngenetic and diagenetic (King, 1989), deep-seated hydrothermal (Powell et al, 1999; Barley et al, 1999; Taylor et al, 2001; Gutzmer et al, 2002) and ancient supergene (Morris, 1980; 1985; Van Schalkwyk and Beukes, 1986) to modern supergene (MacLeod, 1966) have been suggested. The high-grade hematite deposits stand in contrast to martiteûgoethite ores which are generally accepted to be the result of supergene enrichment of iron-formation because they are found along Cretaceous to Tertiary lateritic weathering profiles (Morris, 1980; Harmsworth et al, 1990). Uncertainties about the origin of the high-grade hematite ores appear largely due to the monomineralic composition of the ores. They are almost exclusively composed of hematite (as microcrystalline hematite and martite), a mineral with wide stability field and very simple chemical composition that reveals little about its origin. Second, many of the deposits have been overprinted by later deformation and chemical weathering obscuring primary ore characteristics and zonation (Taylor et al, 2001). Third, surprisingly few detailed geological studies have been undertaken on the deposits with the aim of unraveling ore genesis. Most studies focus on the present-day structure of orebodies and their general physical-chemical composition for mining and beneficiation purposes. A more thorough understanding of the origin of high-grade hematite iron ore deposits may be gained by combining available mining-orientated data with systematic petrographic-geochemical analyses of different ore generations and hematite phases. This paper presents a first summary of results of an ongoing study, started some two years ago, of high-grade iron ore deposits in South Africa, India and Brazil, including a comparison with the rather well studied deposits of the Hamersley Province in Australia.

Traditionally, stratigraphic deposits have been represented by a large number of gridded surface and product analytical models, related to each other by naming convention. This approach, though suitable for structurally simple stratigraphic deposits, does not lend itself well to addressing the complex style of stratigraphic deposits which are becoming more prevalent. In addition, the sheer number of individual gridded models involved makes it very difficult to keep a consistent audit trail of the overall deposit model. Recently, a new enhanced block model structure known as Horizon Adaptive Rectangular Prism (HARP) models was introduced to address these issues. An HARP model is specifically designed to allow stratigraphic units to be represented with virtually no loss of structural integrity, by allowing the tops and bases of the individual HARP blocks to ‘bend’ in concert with the input surfaces. By bringing together the best of grid modelling, triangulation modelling, block modelling and grade estimation, the HARP model opens up many exciting new opportunities for the stratigraphic geologist or engineer to take their model further than was previously possible. Examples of improvements in modelling methodology using a HARP model include: the ability to represent complex normal, reverse and thrust faulting; the ability to store thousands of additional analytical, geotechnical or calculated variables in each individual block; advanced visualisation, manipulation and plotting capabilities; and the ability to calculate volumes and resources against complex, three-dimensional (3D) solid pit designs. Finally, several ‘real world’ scenarios, illustrating how this advancement in modelling technology can benefit a wide range of mining professionals are detailed. These examples demonstrate how productivity gains can be made in both long-term resource modelling and short-term ‘week by week’ geological modelling as an adjunct to mine planning.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Further geochemical and mineralogical studies may help to target the potential underlying porphyry system.CITATION:Chan, J S-L, 2015. This paper deals with the evolution of Canadian shaft sinking technology over the last 15 years. Most, if not all, shaft excavation projects in Canada prior to 1990 were sunk using traditional benching methods with labour intensive equipment. In the late-1980s, J S Redpath Limited of North Bay, Ontario, Canada, were contracted to deepen the shaft at Atomic Energy of Canada LimitedÆs Underground Research Laboratory (URL) located in southern Manitoba. The laboratoryÆs role was underground hydrological and geomechanical research, so the project offered both time and opportunity to conduct additional experiments while sinking. The offshoot of the research program was the true birth of the Canadian version of full-face, long round shaft sinking technology. Throughout the 1990s, this sinking method has been further refined over a number of shafts. The results have been faster sinking rates, a safer work environment and an overall improvement in project economics.

Open pit mining commenced at Lihir Island in 1997 and is undertaken using a conventional drill, blast, load, haul methodology. Unique challenges at the operation include an active geothermal system, a well-developed advanced argillic blanket in the upper portions of the orebody and high rainfall. Grade control is effective utilising routine blast cone sampling. While this provides ‘just in time’ grade information for mill blending, there are opportunities to improve scheduling of mill feed, based on material classification of clay types and sulfur grades. The nature of the clay can impact on the handling properties while the sulfur grade is an important guide for autoclave blending, required for refractory gold. Drilling below the pit floor introduces hazards from the identified geothermal field. A trial Reverse Circulation (RC) program was implemented with the aim of defining four benches below the active mining bench. A comprehensive risk analysis, including the geothermal environment, was undertaken to design a drill collaring procedure with pressure diversion equipment. Operator exposure was minimised through ‘nil on foot’ principles with the driller located in an onboard cab, utilising remote rod handling. Sampling personnel operate in an elevated platform with access to protective covering. Samples from blastholes and the RC holes are processed at two site laboratories. One provides conventional Au fire assays with additional Infrared Combustion (Leco style) S analysis. The second laboratory collects material classification details from portable XRF (pXRF), near infra-red spectrometry (ASD) and Hardness Indicator Testing (HIT). An existing workflow was updated by the site to deal with the additional samples and ensure production ‘turn around times’ were retained for short-term planning. This required some changes to drying temperatures, compositing and screen sizing for the material classification. All results from the two laboratories are loaded into a centralised acQuire database for estimation into a single block model that informs the 13 week medium term planning (MTP) schedule. This paper describes some of the logistical issues faced when drilling in a geothermal area. It also discusses the selection and commissioning Quality Assurance of the sampling equipment and drill rig. Integration of the resulting assay data with existing resource models is also explained.

The outstanding environmental management initiatives undertaken by Novacoal at its Western Main Site near Lithgow in New South Wales over the past five years are detailed in this paper. These initiatives have been based on a combination of proven and innovative investigation and implementation techniques, close consultation with regulatory authorities and full support by colliery management. The results of these initiatives have enabled the colliery to exceed its pollution control obligations from a base well below industry standards. The initial poor condition of the mine was the result of over 50 years of traditional mining which paid little regard to environmental management. The transformation of the colliery within such a short period, with limited capital, is considered a model for the N.S.W. coal industry.

At the inception of the gold-mining industry at Kalgoorlie the small supply of firewood required for steaming purposes was naturally all drawn from the limited local areas, which promised soon to become denuded. With the advent of the railway toKalgoorlie came the ever increasing machinery and steam power, and the accompanying demand for firewood so increased that the fuel contractors began their operations, by following the timber belts along the Yilgarn railway line, and graduallygetting further westward, until at present we find them as far as Woolgangie, 63 miles from Kalgoorlie, and with the regular railway rates, I0. per ton per mile, this maybe considered the limit of payable timber at current rates. Although in the early days the reserve of timber along the railway line must have appeared as incalculable and inexhaustible as that of coal did in Europe a couple of centurys ago, the day is now near us when even this source will fail to meet the demands made upon it, for, although a good two years' supply is available or the areas under the axe, yet it is time to look ahead and find from whence the future supplies are to be drawn. Along the railways we find the zone of felling operations limited for want ofcommunication, and only such portions of the forests as are within six or seven miles of the railway come under the axe at present while virgin forests to the rear remain practically unexploited. It is only in the course of the past sixteen months that the firewood industry has developed...

A strategic mine plan is a fundamental part of any mining operation. It must provide a realistic and operative extraction and processing schedule, and yield the highest value for the business. For open pit mines, the problem can be modelled as a set of blocks representing the deposit, for each of which we need to decide if it is going to be mined, if so, when and where it will be sent (process, stock or dump).This problem can be proven to be of NP-Hard complexity. The traditional approach used by mining engineers to tackle this complexity is to separate the problem into more tractable components, solving each separately. The first step is to use the Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithm to obtain the final pit limit, as well as a set of optimised pit shells (nested pits), using different input prices. Then, using this input, operational phases are designed. Third, the set of phases can be used as an input for a phase-bench style optimisation, usually using a mathematical programming-based algorithm.There are, however, several problems with this approach. First, dividing the problem into simpler parts has the consequence that any compromises made at early stages limit the potential value left for the following steps. Second, LG is a static algorithm, with no concept of the time-value of money, capacity limits, opportunity costs, etc. Phase design is essentially a manual step, for which nested pits provide insufficient information in practice, and therefore the quality of the result in terms of potential net present value (NPV) depends strongly on the experience and expertise of the designer. This means that key input data such as commodity prices, different processes capacities and mine movement limits, are considered only at scheduling, when there is little room for optimisation. This sequential approach limits the potential value in each step, where a simplified problem is addressed, instead of addressing the real, and more complex problem, which is dynamic and should be solved as a whole.We present in this paper an algorithm, and its commercial software implementation, that addresses the dynamic problem as a whole, simultaneously and automatically creating a high-value strategic mine plan that adheres to basic operational constraints, determining dynamic cut-off grades and delivering a set of phases which can serve as a much stronger guide than nested pits for the final design. We discuss some of the key elements of the algorithm and propose a new methodology for strategic mine planning, where phase design dynamically responds to mining strategy definition. Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. It may therefore be of interest to members of our Australasian Institute, who are not members of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, if I give a synopsis of the discussion.My attention was drawn to the fact that my paper did not make clear the extent of the improvement in furnace operations, which followed the use of coke of high quality; this comment applied more particularly to the lead content of slag. The management and operation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are often neglected until the process plant has to shut down as a result of this negligence or as a result of a catastrophic failure as was the case during the recent TSF failure in North America.TSFs are often regarded as non-assets and do not receive the attention they deserve in terms of technical expertise and financial provision. A TSF is not a simple structure but a complex and dynamic structure that changes throughout its operational life. The operational life of a TSF is the period in which there is the greatest opportunity for risks to occur. The failure of a TSF is normally not as a result of a single event but as a result of a consequence of events. These events are often not recognised in time due to a number of factors.Process plants and slurry pumping systems are operated at suboptimal conditions in order to maintain throughput. At the same time, the tailings properties are compromised in terms of slurry density and particle size distribution amongst other things. Tailings deposition cycles and drying cycles are not well understood and the tailings management strategy is not well tuned in terms of maximising consolidation and improving in situ densities. Pond control is also neglected. These are aspects that form the keystone to the effective utilisation of available deposition area as well as the frequency and cost of future embankment raises.Apart from operational issues, forward planning in terms of budget requirements, increases in tailings throughput, embankment raises, pipe replacements, etc are normally put on the back burner. Available deposition space at the time seems to render this planning obsolete.The bottom line is that responsible tailings management and proper forward planning can limit liability and reduce the bottom line in terms of cents per ton if correctly implemented by suitably qualified tailings managers and engineers.The aspects that need to be considered as part of responsible tailings management are highlighted in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J, 2015.
