Nowadays, one of the main problems in current flotation plants and new projects is the significant decrease in feed grades and changes in the mineral composition, which has an important effect on the mineral liberation and associations. Additionally, flotation plants usually operate with feed throughput higher than the original design, which has a significant impact on the feed particle size. All these conditions affect metallurgical performance, and must be evaluated and addressed, by improving control strategies for banks optimisation. For this purpose, the flotation of valuable minerals along the circuits requires better understanding, considering the compromise between performance and selectivity in flotation circuits. This paper presents a characterisation of the different minerals recovered along industrial flotation circuits. Plant sampling campaigns, performed in a copper industrial concentrator in Chile, provided the data for the study. Two rougher flotation banks consisting of cells of 130 m3 and 300 m3 were analysed. All the samples from the industrial surveys were analysed by screening and mineralogy, and the mineral recovery along the circuits was evaluated per particle size class, liberation class, type of associations, and others. Additionally, operating data on froth depth profiles complemented the evaluation of the mineral composition of concentrate streams, along the circuit. The results allowed for identifying and quantifying the main factors that affect the copper recovery and concentrate grade along the flotation banks. It was found that minerals with liberation lower than 50 per cent have a significant impact on the recovery. On the other hand, the decrease in the Cu grade in concentrates along the flotation circuits is mainly due to the relative increase of middling minerals (less liberated), non-valuable floatable minerals, such as free pyrite, and gangue entrainment. The characterisation of the gangue entrainment flow rate along the flotation banks showed a strong relationship with froth depth, which becomes more critical towards the last cells of the banks.

Mining activities can result in the transfer of harmful elements, including arsenic and lead, into the environment. In Australia, one of the potential future uses of rehabilitated mine land is to stock grazing animals. Elemental uptake is dependent on bioavailable fraction for adsorption upon exposure. Bioavailability data are generally lacking in order to provide realistic health risk assessments relating to harmful elements from mine tailings in Australian conditions. Another key component of risk assessment is the ability to estimate a realistic exposure, or dose rate, of the tailings to the grazing cattle over a set period of time. Hence, we aimed to conduct grazing trials directly on rehabilitated tailings facilities in order to provide valuable in situ information on heavy metal dose rates and associated accumulation. For the laboratory-based evaluation of comparative bioavailability, groups of cattle were fed five days a week on a normal diet spiked with mine tailings or soluble pure salts of target elements (eg sodium arsenate, sodium arsenite and lead acetate) for about eight months. For the field validation, cattle were allowed to graze directly on rehabilitated tailings facilities over a similar length of time. Blood and a biopsy of the muscle and liver were periodically collected to monitor arsenic accumulation. At necropsy, blood, muscle, liver, kidney and other saleable tissues were measured for arsenic concentrations. Although this study was focused on arsenic, lead and other metals were also measured. Predictive models for arsenic and other metals have been established to calculate the maximum grazing duration without the risk of exceeding specific food safety guidelines. In 2009, Peter Munro and Peter Tilyard examined the “human capital” in the mineral processing sector in a paper entitled Back to the Future (Munro and Tilyard, 2009). One of their major concerns was a general decline in technical skills and process knowledge, exacerbated by lack of appreciation of the impact this can have on process plant performance and, ultimately, profitability or sustainability of the industry. There are many reasons for this decline, not least of which are the work schedules of today’s metallurgists which have a very different balance between technical and non-technical responsibility than those in the past. However, a shift towards a more technical focus has potential to deliver a range of benefits for industry at large and for the individuals in it This paper discusses some options for development of core metallurgical and process engineering skills that can be used by graduates, employers and training providers.Key skills are identified and mapped against available opportunities for development, such as existing graduate programs, on-the job training and external courses. The authors also review a number of past and present high-quality graduate development programs, including the graduate development program in place at Mount Isa Mines in the 1980s and the Anglo Platinum Graduate Development Program (AGDP) currently operating in South Africa.

The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the fundamental sampling error (FSE), the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) and the segregation fractionalised analysis (SFA) are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody is calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results are compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to a power of 3. Gy’s formula is a theoretical formula applicable in the case when fragments are randomly collected one by one, which is obviously never the case. This is because the fragment shape factor (f) and the granulometric factor (g) were introduced to take care of this anomaly. More recent formulae, such as those suggested by François-Bongarçon and Lyman, are empirically based formula. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power ? (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of ? (alpha) for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of alpha in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for alpha is found to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry preference for 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold bearing ores, the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the combined FSE plus the grouping and segregation error, now referred to as the short-term component of the quality fluctuation error (QFE1), greatly simplifies the characterisation of gold ores, which now only requires the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications for the heterogeneity test from the generalised equation are that provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.CITATION:Minnitt, R C A, 2017. Due to highly competitive international coal markets, Stockton mine is bound to produce very high quality coals consistently if it is to maintain and expand its market share. The nature of the deposit is such that coals from various source pits are blended in differing proportions to meet the various coal quality specifications of the customer. The complexity arises due to quality variation within the seam both horizontally and vertically and the fact that up to six different products with completely different quality specifications may have to be produced. With increasing demand for this rare product and with CoalCorp eager to meet this demand comes the requirement for computer methods to handle this highly complex problem of both modelling and scheduling.

Mining is nothing but an art - besides being a science - of extracting valuable minerals from the womb of the mother earth. In this gigantic task, a large number of machinery and equipment are employed judiciously. Wire ropes play a vital role in lifting or hoisting men and materials under hostile/adverse working conditions and constitute a major item of investment on machinery/equipment. The economy of using a wire rope is a concern for engineers, users and the planners. The economic use of wire ropes for mining purposes largely depends on the following factors;Mechanical design considerations - which include tensile strength of wires, elasticity, resistance to abrasion and crushing, fatigue values, static and dynamic loads on wire ropes, factor of safety, fleet angle, etc. Metallurgical consideration - Composition and heat treatment of wire materials, defects like inclusions and voids, surface quality factor, lubrications, micro structural parameters. Operational consideration - Seizing and cutting of rope, storage, care and maintenance, cutting back, etc. Environmental consideration - Temperature and humidity, pit condition, dust, corrosive atmosphere, etc. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to suggest steps for achieving optimum economy while using the wire ropes for extraction of precious minerals and coal keeping in view the points noted earlier. Once technical viability is established, economy is the ultimate consideration for an industry for safe hoisting of men and material.

Many organisations struggle to yield meaningful outcomes from incident investigations. This paper will demonstrate that we can discover systemic issues by rethinking the ‘Why’ and ‘How’ of investigations, fostering genuine risk reduction. Key points: 1. Shift from ‘prevent recurrence’ to ‘learn and reduce risk’: conventional investigations focus narrowly on recurrence prevention, resulting in narrowly focused investigations with limited ability to identify and reduce organisational risk. Redirecting our objective to learning and improvement opens avenues for broader risk mitigation. 2. Understanding daily work for risk insights: recognise that work is not always completed in full compliance with procedures. Workers will adapt how they complete tasks influenced by the conditions and management systems that exist every day. Understanding the conditions and systems affecting everyday work is vital for uncovering systemic risks. 3. Unearth systemic issues through in-depth exploration: many investigations address surface concerns such as lack of training, incorrect procedures, equipment not being maintained, and missing overarching organisational risks. Systemic, organisation-wide risks are not identified. To discover these systemic issues and create shared learnings, investigators must question management systems, including resourcing, planning and risk management. 4. Design actions for safe failure: common actions like discipline and training fall short and do not reduce risk. Resilience emerges from well-designed controls. Incorporate planning, better resources, interlocks, and guarding to bridge the gap between task execution and risk. 5. Investigation Reports as a Business Case: Investigation reports should not simply state historical information regarding an incident. They are to facilitate decision-making and be presented as a business case to drive change. Organisations can move beyond localised risk and ineffective administrative actions by changing investigation objectives and methods. They can facilitate learning, understand daily work intricacies, identify systemic issues, and enhance the capacity for safety, driving lasting risk reduction.

The Iron Bridge magnetite mine and infrastructure project is currently in development as a joint venture between Fortescue Metals Group, Formosa and Baosteel. It is supported by an extensive database of reverse circulation drill hole samples analysed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), with a large subset tested for concentrate mass recovery, concentrate and tail grades by Davis tube recovery (DTR) testing. A limited number of rock physical testing results, including unconfined/uniaxial compressive strength and crushing work index, completes the database.By combining all available information – assays, DTR results, geology, stratigraphy, mineralogy and rock physical results – and using multivariate statistical analysis techniques, the impact of the critical factors that control concentrate quality, mass recovery and grindability characteristics have been outlined. A set of geochemical groups was created by using a cluster analysis technique from the combined XRF-DTR data. These groups allow optimal separation of material with consistently high concentrate Fe grades and mass recovery. This approach is superior to domaining based on stratigraphic logging or mass recovery as it is commonly used in standard magnetite estimation models. Using the results of a normative mineralogy study, the main geochemical groups were given a mineralogical profile fitting their geochemical characteristics. These findings further refined the understanding of the link between the process characteristics of the samples and their geochemical signature and mineralogy.The geochemical grouping defined on head grades and DTR concentrate mass recovery was generalised into a ‘geomet’ code based solely on the routinely assayed head grades, thus bypassing the need for systematic DTR testing. The geomet code identifies spatial domains with homogeneous geochemistry, mineralogy and process characteristics in both oxide and fresh material that form the basis of the current Iron Bridge resource model. The allocation of geometallurgical characteristics in terms of concentration amenability and concentrate characteristics on a block-by-block basis over the whole project allows for an optimum mine schedule and plant feed. This ensures that the desired concentrate characteristics and mass recovery can be better predicted over the life-of-mine, thereby improving the mine’s economics and stability by derisking the mine schedule and optimising the performance of the concentrators. A key benefit of the geomet code devised for the Iron Bridge mine is that it can be attributed in an automated manner to all samples analysed for a routine XRF analytical suite, from exploration to blasthole drilling. This allows each sample to be allocated to a geometallurgical material type with predictable process response in terms of concentrate mass recovery and concentrate quality without the need to complete systematic DTR testing.A standard multivariate analysis coupled with a cluster analysis has allowed the linking of interdisciplinary results between geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, process and metallurgy to better understand, predict and ultimately mine and process the Iron Bridge deposits. The Telfer Underground sublevel cave (SLC) Operation is located approximately 850 m below surface. The cave was designed to propagate through an old decline which was initially used to monitor the cave. There was a requirement to install air blast plugs at two locations in the old decline in order to isolate any potential air-blasts from the active workings in the event of the rock mass collapsing into the cavity. There was a further requirement for an air-blast plug in another section of the mine where there was a risk of the cave intersecting an old workshop and providing an air-blast pathway through an abandoned incline. The design criteria for the plugs was that they should withstand the design air blast loading, be free draining, cost effective and easily constructed with the mining expertise available on site. A plug consisting of grouted mullock was considered robust and least challenging to construct. For the purpose of estimation of maximum air pressure on plugs, it is supposed as a worst case that the rock above a cave falls as an airtight piston onto the top of a muck pile, forcing air into it and also mine workings intersected by the cave. Airflow through the muck pile is governed by Ergun's equation for turbulent flow. In a time-stepping integration scheme, transient air pressures and velocities are calculated according to equations of thermodynamics, in the cave and at intervals along intersected drives by means of a finite difference spatial discretisation. The ability of plugs to withstand computed pressures is assessed by finite element elastoplastic analysis. This paper outlines the rationale for potential air blast loading, calculation of transient air pressures, plug design and analysis of plug behaviour. The plug construction method is also discussed.

The mining industry needs to attract and recruit young talented people. An important task is, therefore, to create an attractive mining workplace that engages with, and motivates youngsters who are not particularly interested in working in the industry. This paper aims to illustrate a way forward for the mining industry to form healthy and safe workplaces honouring key components such as knowledge, skill, co-operation, continual development and acceptance of diversity. This is a way to create a vision of healthy and safe mining work. The mining industry must work towards zero vision; a future without accidents and hazardous environments. In this paper the authors discuss different aspects of an ‘attractive workplace’ and summarises lessons learnt in 26 statements dealing with safety, both physical and social work environments, and social responsibility. The authors hope these recommendations will provide some guidance for how attractive workplaces should be designed for future deep mining.The paper is based on lessons from two large European projects, a Swedish-Polish project: The Smart Mine of the Future; and a European Union project: Sustainable Intelligent Mining Systems (SIMS). Marcobre SAC (Marcobre) is developing the Mina Justa copper mine project, located in the Ica region of Peru. The Mina Justa IOCG orebody comprises of a sulfide mass overlain by an oxide cap with a sharp transitional zone between the sulfide and oxide masses. The primary target metal is copper, but there are minor amounts of gold and silver. The oxide will be treated by HPGR, crushing and vat leaching, whereas the sulfide will be treated by HPGR, milling and froth flotation. The processing selections are due to some unusual ore characteristics which have required relatively unconventional solutions.Vat leaching was chosen over heap leaching and other processes after detailed trade-off studies found it to be the most attractive, primarily due to the high acid consumption of the ore. The sulfide flotation produces a wide range of concentrate grades due to the complex nature of the mineralogy. The selection of HPGR circuits for both the oxide and sulfide ore is due to the extremely hard and competent nature of the deposit. A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the three types of sample grinders routinely used in the mining industry for the sample preparation of gold ores with particular emphasis placed on testing their capacity to produce a representative assay sample of coarse gold ores. The grinders used in this study are the Labtechnics LM5, the Mixermill 4010 ringmill and the Keegor vertical spindle pulveriser, commonly called a Keegormill. The study was based on the preparation of samples from two sources of known coarse gold ore, the Union Reefs Gold Mine and the Brocks Creek Gold Mine in the Pine Creek region of the Northern Territory of Australia, and a fine gold ore which was from the Macraes Gold Mine in New Zealand. The Union Reefs Mine contains visible coarse gold with 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the gold in the plus 75 μm fraction of milled ore. Discreet particles up to 5 mm have been recorded, Hellsten (1994). Union Reefs Gold Mine recovers 40 per cent of its bullion production through a gravity circuit, Riches (1997). Brocks Creek ore contains visible coarse gold with gravity bullion production fluctuating between 50 per cent and 65 per cent, depending on the mill feed. Average gravity bullion production from the Brocks Creek Mine is 55 per cent, Wilke (1997). The average gold grain size of Macraes Mine ore is 20 μm with 40 per cent of the gold in sub 10 μm particles. No gravity bullion is produced from the Macraes Mine, O'Keefe (1997). The testwork demonstrated conclusively that it is possible to prepare a representative sample for assay, of a coarse gold ore, when a Keegormill is used to pulverise the sample to a nominal 100 μm particle size (90 per cent passing a 100 μm screen by wet sieving). Both the Mixermill and the Labtechnics LM5 failed to prepare a representative sample, even when ground to a nominal 75 μm particle size.

Magnetic susceptibility measurements provide rapid, non-destructive testing of drill core, but cannot directly map magnetite and/or hematite content. Combined magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements provide much more diagnostic information and, with sparse calibration constraints, are able to quantify magnetite and hematite concentrations and potentially map differences in grain size and texture. We have developed a travelling three-component vector magnetometer that can be run alongside core to map its external magnetic field. The logger has been designed to operate in core sheds and at remote drill sites. It is used to rapidly scan a length of core, with each core being scanned in different rotations. The magnetic field contributions from any remanent magnetisation rotates with the core and cause differences between successive measurements, while the field contributions from any induced magnetisations with isotropic magnetic susceptibility remain constant. Deconvolution of the magnetic field data with simultaneous three-channel inversions of the multirotation data separates remanent and induced components. Interpretation of this data provides estimates of the intensities of induced and remanent magnetisations, the orientation of the remanent magnetisations and the ratios of the induced and remanent magnetisation strengths. We expect these magnetisation parameters to correlate with stratigraphy through a banded-iron formation. Furthermore, we anticipate that we will be able to use this information to map zones of oxidation and other changes along the core. The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region (North West Province in South Africa) produced a substance called CRUD (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The CRUD was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the CRUD confirmed that exposed CRUD leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil.   Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, ie sulfuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels ie 0.001 M, 0.0001 M and 0.00001 M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulfuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling increased.   Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil's porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

This paper presents an empirical design methodology that is based on successful US roof support systems using both primary and secondary support in coal mining entries and intersections. The recent nationwide dramatic reduction of roof fall rates, especially in areas with weaker roof, can be directly correlated to the effectiveness of the roof support systems. A large database of roof fall histories at several mines is used to define the approximate boundaries of three modes of roof support with respect to roof strength as classified by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and in situ vertical stress as indicated by the depth of cover. These roof support classifications are: • Suspension, where roof bolts mainly provide skin control for strong roof. • Beam building or reinforcement, where a roof of moderate strength can be supported by roof bolts only. • Supplemental (secondary) support, where the primary support by roof bolts may be augmented by several secondary support systems, eg cable bolts, trusses, additional roof bolts or standing supports. The Primary Support Rating index (PSUP) captures the capacity of the primary roof bolt system as a function of the actually implemented roof control plan, ie roof bolt length, roof bolt density, and roof bolt capacity, while it does not consider the type of bolt. The actual PSUP value is compared against a suggested PSUP value derived from statistical analysis of US case histories. Where secondary support is indicated, the expected rock load determines the necessary capacity of the secondary support system. A new (free) software package, Analysis of Mine Roof Support (AMRS), implements the design methodology and also allows comparison with other international indices such as the Reinforcement Density Index (RDI), the PRSUP, etc.

Many open cut mines extend to depths well below the natural water table level with constant dewatering required to maintain operations. When mining activities cease the groundwater starts to fill the void and pit lakes form. The resultant pit lake is directly connected to the surrounding water table and understanding the hydrological and chemical evolution of these lakes is important for minimising environmental impacts. In Western Australia alone there are currently 1800 mine voids and more than 150 mines operating below the water table (Johnson and Wright, 2003). In conjunction with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, CSIRO has been undertaking research to measure and model rates of evaporation from pit lakes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Economically efficient mining processes can be significantly assisted by the implementation of sensor technologies for the detection of materials and boundary layers between materials inside the stratum. These sensors are meant to facilitate the machinery operator and illustrate furthermore the prerequisites in assisting tools towards fully automated mining equipment. Therefore, project æSensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the InterfacesÆ (SIMT) aims at the integration of ground penetrating radar (GPR) and geoelectric sensor technology by endowing with them a bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. For this reason, a sensor bucket was developed and tested in the Inden Mine of RWE Power AG. The feasibility of integration and deployment of such sensor technology has been proven effective for the conditions of open cast mining. The main focus of current research lies on developing algorithms to analyse the acquired measurement data from the sensors to automatically detect layers and materials. A computer network receives the GPR and geoelectric measurement data as well as the positioning data of the sensor bucket. The positioning data mainly consists of GPS and encoder information, which is merged with the sensor data by using the UTC time stamp. With the aid of consecutive processes the relevant information will be extracted and provided to the user. The aim of SIMT is to replace material identification, traditionally carried out by the operator, by implementing a continuous operating interpretation system in mining equipment based on GPR and geoelectric sensor technology, resulting in more detailed information regarding the working face during an excavation. This detailed information provides an opportunity for efficient planning and controlling of selective mining of natural deposits, such as the process of lignite mining.
