Soft sensors offer several practical advantages for the process control of comminution circuits by combining multiple conventional sensors and other data sources with real-time analysis using mechanistic, phenomenological or machine learning models. While there has been a growth in the use of machine learning techniques for developing soft sensors in minerals processing applications, this paper describes advantages and challenges of using soft sensor models developed on the basis of process knowledge. Recent experience with three new soft sensor technologies developed by the authors are discussed. The Mill Filling Inference Tool which has been implemented at several mine sites, compares SAG mill load cell and power draw measurements with outputs of a semi-mechanistic power model to estimate the mill ball and total filling in real time. The progressive wear of the mill liners is modelled, allowing the model to correct the load mass due to the mass loss automatically and to estimate the charge trajectory. This information enables the mill to be operated more confidently near its limits. A coarse-ore stockpile soft sensor as been recently developed using a 3D cellular automata-based model to track ore size throughout the pile, and estimating the live capacity and size at each stockpile feeder to the primary mills. Finally, a hydrocyclone soft sensor is being developed to monitor performance using available hydrocyclone models to estimate the size and flow balance around the cyclone in real time. The model-based soft-sensor approach aims to synthesise and analyse existing data and provide operators and engineers with process- and model-relevant information that can facilitate making better process decisions. Maintenance data has proven useful for model development as it allows soft sensors to automatically adjust and compensate for the effect of progressive wear, for example for mill liners, thus helping the models to maintain calibration throughout the equipment life.

Currently, many commercial sinter plants are exploring the potential addition of high-grade iron ore concentrates to improve the sinter grade. A better understanding of the ore blend, granule behaviour and green bed properties is critical to making this change and maintaining productivity in the sinter plant. This study compared the performance of a laboratory scale granulation drum to a commercial scale unit. The blend used was an Asia-Pacific style sinter blend containing iron ore concentrates. The operating conditions of the two granulation drums (laboratory and commercial scale) were fixed at the same Froude Number (0.00337), space factor (15 per cent) and residence time (4.5 mins). The granules were characterised by measuring their mean size, size distribution and green bed voidage. It was found that the laboratory scale granules were representative of commercial sinter plant granules at similar moisture content. When the moisture was fixed at ~6.9 per cent, granulation time had no significant effect. A further fundamental investigation was undertaken to measure the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity of the individual ores used in this study. The kinetics of water absorption were measured which showed that water absorbs quickly into the ore particles within the first 60 seconds, slowing down until final saturation was attained after six hours. A linear relationship between the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity was noted for different ore particle sizes. The results of this study provide a baseline understanding of the current commercial sinter blend and encourage exploring the specific effect of increasing the proportion of ultrafine concentrates in sintering in a future study.

The Olympic Dam deposit is truly a world-class IOCG-Ag deposit, the world’s fourth largest deposit of copper and the world’s largest known single uranium deposit. Traditional and non-traditional methods have been used to accurately model the geology and mineralisation of the Olympic Dam deposit. Conditional simulation models have long been used as the most robust method for estimating risk and uncertainty in mine planning decisions at other mines around Australia and the world. There are many challenges associated with simulating the Olympic Dam deposit at a selective mining unit size sufficient for underground mine planning purposes. These include the size of the deposit, resulting in hundreds of millions of grid blocks; the disseminated nature of the zoned sulfide mineralisation. And lastly the direct relationship of the relative abundances of the sulfide mineral species that are crucial to the Olympic Dam smelter performance. Several geostatistical techniques have been utilised in the workflow for the Olympic Dam Conditional Simulation model to address these challenges. The key techniques are: • Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform to de-correlate the main elements before simulation. • Pluri-Gaussian implicit boundary simulation method to simulate the mineralisation domains. • Spectral simulation method of de-trended and de-correlated attributes with account of local varying variance. The resulting conditional simulation models have been validated against histograms, grade-tonnage curves, cross-plots and assessed for variogram reproduction. This paper presents how the final conditional simulation models compare to benchmarking models created using alternate estimation techniques of ordinary kriging and local uniform conditioning. It also presents a validation process using historical samples to test final estimate accuracy of the simulation models.

Canadian mining research has recently been reinvigorated through a pan-Canadian research strategy driven by the industry, the research community and government departments. These organisations have come together to form the Canada Mining Innovation Council, whose role is to focus and increase mining research in the country. One of the major themes of the organisation is environment; including major research initiatives on energy, tailings and environmental stewardship. Other major initiatives on exploration, mineral extraction and mineral processing will also consider environmental benefits in the research projects they undertake. All the initiatives have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. Membership to date includes most of the major mining companies operating in Canada and almost all of the mining-related universities. The sustainability of mining projects is linked to informed investment decisions based on public reporting of exploration and mineral resource estimation results. In Australia, public reporting guidelines are established by the Joint Ore Reserves Committee reporting code through the JORC Code (2012). Although the assessment of uncertainty in the results reported is a requirement, this is often communicated qualitatively and evaluated subjectively. This can become a liability particularly in the early stages of mining projects when spatial domains of geological interpretation and mineralisation envelopes inform resource estimations’ reliability. A recent review of JORC reports found no reports used quantitative assessments of the geological interpretation or mineral resource estimation envelopes, and 27 per cent of reports did not address the question of quality of geological interpretation. Reports that did address the quality used 19 different terms to communicate quality. This work presents methodologies for quantitative uncertainty assessment and communication and explores how they could be applied in public reporting practice. Quantitative uncertainty reporting would benefit mine planning and financial modelling as they normally assume the geology is 100 per cent right (since no error is reported or only a single deterministic model is provided). The complexity, cost, and additional work of doing a quantitative assessment could hinder a straightforward implementation. This could be overcome if mining companies budget for quantitative uncertainty assessment and associated professional development. A compulsory requirement for the inclusion of uncertainty assessments in public reporting or adopting standardised subjective language would improve industry practice.

While the new Minister of Economic Development sends his apologies at being unable to speak at this Conference, I am delighted to present on his behalf. The Ministry of Economic Development is not only responsible for managing the Crown mineral estate, but also for developing initiatives and policies to promote regional economic development and for managing the GovernmentÆs broader economic development strategy. IÆd like to talk to you today about the critical links that need to exist between these three areas.   I am going to start with a question for all of you. What do these towns have in common? +        Waiuku, +        Thames, +        New Plymouth, +        Nelson, +        Greymouth, +        Arrowtown, +        Reefton, +        Palmerston, and +        Dunedin.   The answer is minerals. These towns were nearly all founded on the back of minerals and mining. In the case of Greymouth it was gold that brought the people to the mouth of the Grey River and it is coal that sustains the town.   In 1870 the town of Shortland had 20 000 people, 90 hotels and was twice the size of Auckland. We now know Shortland as Thames, and of course Auckland is considerably larger. One wonders whether the good folk of Shortland suffered from ætraffic jamsÆ with 90 pubs to navigate between. Gold mining in the Aorere River near Collingwood led early entrepreneurs to develop the land surrounding Nelson as a food basket to sustain the mining population. Nelson is still thriving on this legacy today. The town of Palmerston was founded in 1862 as a stopping point for gold miners heading into central Otago. The gold rush made Dunedin New ZealandÆs first highly industrialised city. Reefton on the West Coast was the first town in New Zealand to have electric lights and in the recent past we were wondering whoÆd be left to turn them off. New Plymouth, and Waiuku are still known as energy and mining centres.   By contrast once thriving towns like Capleston, Canvastown and Blackball are just names on a map now, and at the extreme you have places like Waiuta which has been reclaimed by the West Coast forest. Queenstown was built off the back of the gold rush, but by 1900 with the gold gone, only 190 people lived there yet Queenstown has managed to rebuild itself thanks to some other stunning natural assets. These examples help illustrate three key points that I am sure will each be extensively linked with our minerals and mining industries. First, NZÆs development and that of its regions has been, and continues to be, inextricably linked with our minerals and mining industries.   Second, things change. Sectors, regions and countries must continually adapt and improve if the are to avoid the fate of the Waiutas of this world. And third, the development challenges faced by NZ and its mining industry in the 21st century are vastly more complex than in the past. Governments and industry alike must balance and respond to a range of domestic and international environmental, cultural, economic and other interests and considerations. If you thought of your industry as æjust digging holes in the groundÆ then you may as well simply stick your head in one!

Access to secure and reliable water resources is fundamental to the minerals industry. In recognition of that requirement, and cognisant of extensive contemporary public water debate and reform initiatives in Australia, the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) approached the Ministerial Council on Mineral and Petroleum Resources (MCMPR) proposing the establishment of a Joint Working Group to prepare a framework of strategic principles to ensure responsible water management at a site and corporate level, manage risks and identify opportunities. The Framework provides high-level guidance on issues that should be addressed in water decision making across Australia in relation to mining and associated processing operations. It identifies principles and objectives for adoption in four areas, viz: valuing water, strategic water planning, implementation, and engaging stakeholders. Given the high level nature of the Framework, and its national application, it does not seek to replicate detailed guidelines already widely available in each state and territory on operational water management practices and associated regulatory issues at mine sites. The Framework includes a series of case studies from across Australia that demonstrate where strategic thinking, wise water management and close consultation with stakeholders has delivered better water use, more profitable operations and excellent community/stakeholder relationships. The Framework was formally launched on behalf of MCMPR by the Western Australian Minister for Resources at the MCAÆs Sustainable Development Conference in Perth in October 2006. As the surrounding environment continues to change and evolve, mine managers face a changing climate of expectations. TodayÆs mine managers must juggle competing pressures to deliver sound social, environmental and economic results. Leadership is a fundamental tool for the effective mine manager. Whilst mine managers require solid technical and operational skills, importantly the manager must be able to engage a workforce, build and retain employees and seize opportunity for growth and development when presented. An important tool for engaging employees in the business at Rio Tinto Aluminium is the business improvement programme. At Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs Weipa mine, the business improvement methodology Six Sigma is used to deliver measurable, sustainable outcomes for the business. The next step in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs improvement journey is to implement Lean Manufacturing at all managed operations. The operating environment for mine managers continuously evolves and effective mine managers must be flexible and adaptive to meet challenges. Governance and regulation constantly change in an environment of commodity cycles and finite resources. This increases pressure on the economic return achieved by the operation. As such, effective mine managers must be aware of and manage the operating environment û the broader, issues-based environment not just the immediate day-to-day responsibility of mine managing. This includes delivering on safety, community and environmental priorities. At Rio Tinto Aluminium, part of managing the business is via investment in the area of social partnerships to engage employees and the broader community in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs commitment to sustainability. The Future Reef partnership entered with the Great Barrier Reef Research Foundation in 2005 forms an important part of Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs climate change strategy. This four-year, A$1 million investment funds programmes looking at the effect of ocean acidification on the Great Barrier Reef. The partnership is a unique example of industry and science working together on an area of mutual and national concern. Modern mine managers require a broad set of skills to effectively deliver outcomes. TodayÆs mine managers must make innovative and courageous responses to determine todayÆs strategy for tomorrowÆs future.

The concept of rigid or yielding bolts is discussed based upon support requirements for excavations of equivalent geomechanical behaviour. The concept of equivalent geomechanical behaviour is introduced for comparison purpose where the rock mass properties are varied for a given depth (stress) so that the deformation of the roof without any support remains constant = 300mm. A simple experimental theoretical analysis for a uniform stress field acting on an axi-symmetric excavation is conducted to establish roof bolt requirements under different conditions such as width of a given excavation, time of setting of support etc. Results are presented in graphical forms.

Magnesium International Limited (MIL) has broken new ground in their desire to integrate their mineral development activities in the Southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia in to the communities of the region, despite there being no statutory requirement to do so. In their efforts to define a magnesite resource adjacent to the proposed site for a magnesium metal processing facility, MIL opened their exploration program up for public consultation. In conjunction with the Port Pirie Regional Development Board (PPRDB), a community group was formed to review the impact of exploration and mining on the ecologically sensitive Southern Flinders region. This voluntary move towards full community consultation for mineral exploration was a first in South Australia and probably in Australia. The Community Focus Group (CFG) worked closely with MIL, Primary Industries and Resources of South Australia (PIRSA) and the Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) in the development of an exploration program and Declaration of Environmental Factors (DEF) acceptable to all stakeholders. Collaboratively, the community concerns were discussed and addressed, with the community gaining a very comprehensive understanding of the exploration process and possible future mine development. A balance of social, environmental and economic factors was developed that was accepted by all parties and encapsulated in the final DEF for approval by the regulatory authority. The consultation process was a new experience for all of the stakeholders, each of them effectively exploring new ground in addressing information dissemination, risk management and the social versus economic equation. MIL developed not only a viable and acceptable exploration program but also substantially reinforced its position as a responsible corporate citizen with the Southern Flinders communities.

Lihir operations of Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) are on Lihir Island (PNG) which is located approximately 900 km north-north-east of the national capital Port Moresby. The mine is located within the Luise Caldera of the Luise Volcano which is located on the east coast of the island. The caldera is an extinct volcanic crater that is geothermally active. Volcanic activity on Lihir Island is limited to remnant hydrothermal venting in the Luise Caldera in the form of hot springs and fumaroles. Steam and gas (including H2S) naturally discharge within the pit area and along the Kapit beach and near shore region. The hydrothermal reservoir temperatures can reach 100°C at the water table and exceed 200°C at depth. Newcrest maintains a Geo-hazard Management Plan to identify and manage the various geotechnical and geothermal hazards on-site. The major geothermal hazard to mining at Lihir is the occurrence of geothermal outbursts, which have occurred in the past with varying intensities and caused two ‘near misses’, production delays and material losses.

Coal washability data can be used for assessing coal quality. However, the techniques of using these data to solve quality problems differ from one mine to another and certain problems may never really be investigated due to limitations of the available techniques. One promising way to overcome these limitations is by correct application of geostatistics.A geostatistical study on coal washability data was undertaken based on a data set of closely spaced in-pit bore cores. These bore cores were analysed consistently over a relatively simple geological area. The average distance between the drill holes was about lOOm. There were 78 drill holes available for the area after deleting the erroneous bore cores. During the study, nine extra closely spaced drill holes were drilled within a single mining block.A procedure to construct two coal quality models, a kriging or cokriging model and a simulation model, was proposed. The modelling results for the data above are discussed and results of a mine scheduling exercise based on the models developed are included.

Geometallurgy is often a misunderstood and poorly defined concept. The first thing the paper will attempt is to provide a definition of geometallurgy. Ultimately this paper has been written to provide guidance to geologists, mining engineers and processing professionals as to what geometallurgy means in the crucial early phases of a potential mining project between the time of discovery and the time of commencing construction, should this occur. The paper covers the options available for conducting a geometallurgical study of a resource or orebody, appropriate to the level of definition required in the projectÆs development cycle. The paper will then describe how the geometallurgical information generated is subsequently used in calculations, planning and preparation of reports designed to inform and reassure stakeholders, such as the market. Ultimately in a successful project, appropriate options adopted in the development phase will form the basis of an ongoing geometallurgical program that links the major site disciplines for the good of the operation.CITATION:David, D, 2013. Geomembranes selected for various applications often start with considering target properties developed by industry organisations such as Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI), and test methods developed by ASTM and other Standards organisations The geomembrane types are typically, initially selected based on manufacturers recommendations and chemical resistance data from the manufacturer or industry knowledge. Geomembranes considered for this project included materials with material properties that exceeded the minimum target values of various test methods. The difficulty is in selecting which parameters are most important for a particular application and also what service life can be expected for the geomembrane under various chemical and environmental exposure conditions. Accelerated aging testing of candidate geomembranes in simulated exposure conditions can be useful to select the preferred geomembrane and predict the service life of the geomembrane under different exposure conditions. The exposure conditions of immersion in acidic tailings liquor, splash zone and freeboard zone were considered for evaporation ponds on a site with significant heat and UV radiation. Candidate geomembranes considered a range of different types of polyethylene liners. The results of the accelerated aging testing have allowed the selection of the geomembrane for the range of exposure conditions and evaluation of the expected service life of the geomembrane.

The Collie River catchment, located approximately 200 km south of Perth, covers an area of around 2830 km2 and is the source of run-off to the Wellington Dam, an important irrigation water resource for the Collie Irrigation District. The salinity of the Wellington Dam has increased due to historical clearing and irrigators currently use water with salinity levels approximately twice that of the Murray River in South Australia (Water and Rivers Commission, 2001). The Collie River Salinity Situation Statement (2001), released by the Water and Rivers Commission (now the Department of Water), identified realistic actions that could achieve the salinity reduction target. Subsequent benefit-cost analyses and prefeasibility studies recommended the diversion of the most saline flows in the Collie River away from the dam as an immediate intervention (URS, 2003). The East Branch of the Collie River above the locality of Buckingham (20 km east of Collie) contributes around half of the salt that flows into the Wellington Dam and the diversion and storage of the saltiest flows from the East Branch at Buckingham was identified as a viable option for reducing salinity in Wellington Dam. The proposal had one problem û the water could not be disposed of as quickly as it was diverted. However, in the vicinity of the diversion site were a number of coal mine voids and after preliminary discussions, the Government/Griffin Coal alliance was formed and from this the opportunities have continued. Diverted water would be stored temporarily in an adjacent mine void (Chicken Creek 4 void) and then disposed of to the sea. The disposal options included Western Power CorporationÆs saline discharge pipeline from Collie Power Station, or a new pipeline. The diverted water was also identified as a potential raw source for treatment and use in industry. This has opened up opportunities including desalination, water efficiencies in the power stations, increased reliability of water supply for the power stations, water for new industries, wastewater disposal options and extra water for PerthÆs water supply. In the process of solving the water storage problems the project introduced a range of mine water quality problems û heavy metals and pH û and the Department of Water (DoW) is now working with the mining industry and the Centre for Sustainable Mine Lakes (CSML) to develop treatment and management technologies. The project has received support and funding through the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) and it has been possible to accelerate and enhance this project as a result of NAP. The DoW has developed the proposal to an advanced stage and gained approvals for the capital diversion program to go ahead. The partnerships have expanded to include the second mining company, Premier Coal, the Water Corporation, Western Power and the Harvey Irrigation Cooperative. The proposal could feasibly result in a $90 million integrated water management initiative for Collie using the latest technology, mining operations and providing water for value adding industries in the local area. The DoW is not a mining company; however, our experience in managing water in times of shortage, environmental water quality criteria, competition for water and managing community expectations will have the same success factors:consultation and knowing your community and stakeholders, sharing issues and working in partnership can provide results far greater than the initial issue, even brackish water has value, every sector is in competition with each other and has to have a share of the water, an integrated approach can provide opportunities for development in areas of water shortage, and never think of water as wastewater.

In the mining industry, crusher-related incidents have led to 15 reported deaths in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA between 1998 and 2007 (NSW Government Resources Regulator, 2024). The majority of these fatalities occurred during routine crusher maintenance tasks. A survey of quarry and mine site maintenance staff was completed to ascertain what they thought of such safety device to understand if beneficial and if so reasons if unused. Overall, findings show, staff perceived risks differently, cost, familiarity, device awareness and not front of mind, influenced adoption. This underscores the importance of asking the right questions involving maintenance and safety staff to lead to more proactive risk assessment.

It is sometimes necessary to resort to extremes in order to call attention to something that is pertinent to safety in mining. When some of the experts in occupational safety talk about this topic, they usually refer to a 'regulation' established by the Romans which stated that, due to the health hazards, usually death, no Romans but only slaves should work in mining. Since the time of the Roman Empire, a lot of ground has been covered in the field of mine safety. Nowadays, it can be said that occupational safety is being seriously addressed, with the result that the number of mining accidents has reduced dramatically, fatalities in this industry are less frequent, and the rate of accidents compared with other activities, such as construction or fanning, is low. This achievement has been possible initially through government legislation and by procedures established by the mining companies themselves. However, the dilemma for government is whether to regulate and if so, how much. It is pleasing to observe that most companies are establishing working procedures which conform with new government legislation, placing strong emphasis on the duty of care for mine employees. There will always be some regulatory aspects of legislation, and perhaps the best example of this is in the use of mine hoists where there are no international or Australian standards, and the regulations applied are of an empirical nature that err on the side of safety.

Closure cost estimates may be generated at any stage of a mining operationÆs life; commencing with the initial prefeasibility studies and continuing through to the final decommissioning cost estimates. However, not all mine closure cost estimates are necessarily the same. Cost estimates will vary depending on the purpose for which they are prepared, the organisations requiring or undertaking the estimate and the stage of the mining operation. Different organisations can legitimately arrive at disparate cost estimates for closing the same mine because the organisations have different reasons for requiring the estimates. Another, equally valid, reason for potentially wide variations in cost estimates by different organisations on the same mine site is the different definitions of æclosure costsÆ used by different estimators. This paper considers the different approaches by different organisations including operating companies, government authorities and financial organisations and uses a hypothetical example based on practical experience to illustrate some of these differences in estimation methods.The paper suggest that a more consistent approach to closure cost estimating in the Australian mining industry would assist mining companies, governments, the accounting industry and the broader community to better understand this complex component of mine planning.
