Systems for the routine on-line determination of ash content of process streams in coal preparation plants and handling systems have been in use in Australia for over four years. More recently, monitors for on-line moisture measurement have been developed to complement the ash measurement function. The technology for these systems is reviewed briefly. The development of reliable ash and moisture monitors has made the implementation of automatic systems of coal quality control practical. The emerging philosophies of automatic control in Australian preparation plants are examined with particular emphasis on systems involving dense medium circuit regulation. Related developments in flotation control and coal sorting are noted to complete this overview.

At the last MassMin Conference in Sudbury, Caterpillar’s vision of a continuous mining concept for block caving operations was presented on the background of global raw material demand and its continuous increase. By analysing today’s structure of mining processes in block caving, the paper (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012) highlighted the main bottlenecks in the process chain and identified conceptual solutions by help of a case study. The main focus was the paradigm shift from discontinuous batch type operation to a continuous mining process of the blocks.In 2016, the strategic vision has taken major strides forwards and remote continuous operation has become a reality. Caterpillar’s continuous operation system – the Rock Flow system – was successfully installed in Codelco’s Andina mine and start of operation is scheduled in the first half of 2016.Based on continuous product developments, this paper sets the focus on two main aspects of continuous mining. First, field experiences of the Rock Flow system will be shared, highlighting the Andina project course from system installation, to commissioning and successful system start. The second aspect concentrates on the system and mine layout as discussed in the case study scenario in MassMin 2012 (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012).Based on Caterpillar`s continuous product development, the Rock Flow system set-up and panel design were modified for a general roadway design and drawpoint layout. The new design allows an optimised use in block preparation phase (spreading) and full production phase (reaping), operating a fleet of load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and Rock Flow systems. The combined use of the two technologies optimises the mining process in every stage of block life and significantly increases the performance of the continuous block caving operation in the production panel to pave the road for the next generation of super caves.CITATION:Frenzel, M, 2016. Comminution Kinetics equations are developed to take into account difference of grindability of mineral components. The equations describing both batch and closed circuit grinding or crushing processes are given. These equations are applied to industrial data to derive comminution kinetic and classification characteristics of the component minerals in a multi-mineral ore. Control strategy based on these concepts is presented.

Lower transportation costs, improved handling and better utilization efficiency are some of the reasons that make low moisture coal product desirable. There has been considerable interest in the development of effective coal dewatering techniques to achieve this result. One avenue of considerable merit for enhancing dewatering processes is by modification of the surface chemistry of the coalwater slurry system by chemical means, resulting in better performance of existing equipment. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the utility of surface active agents in the enhancement of fine coal dewatering. A large variety of proprietary dewatering agents have been studied in relation to their efficiency in enhancing the dewatering of a number of Australian coals. Properties of particular coals that make them amenable to improved dewatering by particular chemical agents have been identified. Surface studies, including surface tension and zeta potential measurements as a function of surfactant concentration, as well as dewatering assessments, were used. Particular attention was paid to filtration, but the results could be applied to other dewatering systems.

Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill control is complex and depends on many dynamic process variables. Good control strategies ensure that a mill is operating as close to optimal as possible, resulting in significant economic benefits to an operation. Pueblo Viejo, a gold mine in the Dominican Republic, has been actively improving their control strategies since start-up in 2012, and one of these initiatives was to install an acoustic monitoring system on the SAG mill. The data from the system is used to optimise the mill’s performance by limiting the time the mill is either running too quiet or too loud. The lower limit is an indication that the charge in the mill is too high for efficient breakage or that the mill speed is too low and grinding media are not striking the toe of the charge. Conversely, when the acoustic emissions from the mill are too high, this can indicate that the balls are striking above the toe of the charge, resulting in inefficient grinding and excessive liner and lifter wear. Adjusting mill operating conditions to keep acoustic emissions in the ‘sweet spot’ between these limits results in more efficient grinding.Pueblo Viejo installed a Metso SmartEar™ to monitor the acoustic emissions of their SAG mill in January 2013. This system has been installed on many mills around the world and is specifically designed for optimising SAG mill control. One system output is the impact counter which measures steel-on-steel impacts on the mill shell. The impact counter uses both frequency and time domain analysis to approximate the number of ball impacts per minute. This method of analysis excludes parts of the sound signal not associated with steel-on-steel impacts and gives an accurate measure of this critical control parameter. After the acoustic system was installed, Pueblo Viejo collected data to determine the upper and lower limits for the impact count variable. The live data is available to the mill operators and it is used as one of the key operating variables to control the mill.Through continuous improvement and the use of advanced technologies like SmartEar™, Pueblo Viejo are improving the control and operation of their SAG mill, resulting in reduced liner wear, more efficient mill performance and optimised energy consumption. The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

THE filter-press, which has done so much for the successful-treatment of the sulpho-telluride ores of Kalgoorlie, has a serious rival in the vacuum process, and this paper is written with a view to arousing more interest in the cheaper working of the press, it being doubtful whether its efficiency in extraction can be improved upon. Before proceeding with the actual working of the press, it may be as well to make brief mention of the character of the ore treated at the Associated Northern Blocks, where these notes were compiled. "The availability of real-time data in any process control system is critical for effective management of that system. At MMG LXML Sepon Copper Operation in Lao PDR, controlling the copper grade of the feed to the leaching circuit is paramount for maximising both productivity and copper recovery. Since 2008, real-time analysis data has been available to the process engineers from the Geoscan on-belt analyser installed on the Copper Mill feed conveyor, and highly accurate results on copper grade have allowed the process engineers to strictly control blending to overcome the variability in plant feed grade. The availability of real-time analysis data is crucial, as effective sampling of this stream is both difficult and error-prone, being only a snapshot in time of highly variable ore stockpiles, as well as having significant laboratory turnaround delays. Periodic sampling is used to verify the Geoscan data as accurate. Since its installation, the copper result has been the most critical output of the Geoscan. In recent times, the process engineers have sought to utilise other results from the Geoscan to further improve and control the process. One measurement of particular interest involves the real-time measurement of calcium and magnesium as a gauge of ore feed gangue acid consumption. To satisfy this end, accurate measurement of calcium and magnesium is becoming increasingly more important and has been the subject of ongoing collaboration between Sepon and Scantech, the manufacturer of the Geoscan. Despite an increasing focus by media, communities and activists driving an elevated regulatory focus in Australia and indeed some other mining jurisdictions, the mining industry globally has had limited successful mine lease relinquishments and transfers to support a next land use.Critique from anti-mining lobbyists frequently uses the large estimates from historically abandoned mine sites to influence risk-averse regulatory reforms to improve environmental performance. The mine rehabilitation regulatory processes in Australia, and specifically in the State of Queensland, are thus largely in place to prevent mining operators from abandoning their obligations.Regulatory responses to the lack of mine rehabilitation and closure performance in the last five to ten years have primarily focussed on compliance and enforcement of rehabilitation conditions in environmental approvals. Additionally, financial assurance measures have been tightened to protect against abandonment of rehabilitation obligations by the Industry, including the Chain of Responsibility legislation (Queensland Government, 2016b) in April 2016, to hold to account those who have benefitted from mining and processing/refining projects, and then avoid their environmental obligations.CITATION:Swart, P B and Erskine, P D, 2018. Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) commissioned The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to undertake a study into how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. This report builds on a previous study prepared by BCG in the early 1990s for the Industry Taskforce on Leadership and Management Skills (Karpin Committee), which provided a snapshot of the Senior Manager in 2010. Aberfoyle has been applying computer methods to mine geology in small to medium-sized underground mines since the early 1980's. Recently, the installation of DATAMINE software at the Hellyer Mine in Tasmania has allowed development of computerised applications which assist both mine geologists and mine planning engineers on a daily basis.Comprehensive data is entered into a database prior to survey coordinating to produce a processed database which can be accessed for construction of a variety of plots. The folded and faulted nature of the orebody contacts at Hellyer has necessitated the use of the structure contour method to provide a complete 3-D spatial interpretation. Computer-generated contact intersection points are hand-contoured before digitising and wireframing as a digital terrain model. This wireframe model can be sectioned in any plane for mine planning.

When studying minerals degrees at university, all the emphasis is towards sending the graduates into the bush to work at a remote mine; however, that is not the only option available to new graduates. There are positions in equipment supply companies, commercial laboratories, research organisations, engineering companies and contractors of many types. The aim of this paper is to show metallurgy graduates that there are non-mine site based career options available to them that offer outstanding career development. This is illustrated by outlining the research being undertaken by Magotteaux Australia and by telling the story of a graduate metallurgist working in MagotteauxÆs small research group. Magotteaux is an international supplier of grinding media and wear resistant components for the mining industry. The Australian research group is focused on determining the effects that the choice of grinding media has on subsequent processing, for example flotation and leaching, by using newly developed tools and techniques.

The extraction of platinum and rhodium from scrapped honeycomb autocatalyst into hydrochloric acid/aluminum chloride/nitric acid solutions is described. Results are given for the effects of leachant composition, temperature and catalyst pre-reduction using hydrogen. Data are also presented for the recovery, by hydrogen reduction, of platinum and rhodium dissolved in the leach solution. Parameters studied include solution composition and temperature, hydrogen pressure, and platinum seed addition.

The Geita Gold Mine is located 80 km southwest of the town of Mwanza in the north-west of Tanzania and is 100 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Limited. Open pit mining commenced at Geita in 2000. In 2011, the operation produced 494 000 oz at a cash cost of US$536/oz. This is a significant improvement from 2008, when 264 000 oz were produced at a cash cost of US$742/oz.A period of relatively poor operating performance at Geita was recorded over the period from 2006 to 2009. A period known at Geita as æthe turnaroundÆ commenced in 2009, and has been remarkable to say the least. Over the last couple of years the mine has embarked on a journey, which saw various interventions and initiatives. Among the key initiatives were Project ONE (which focuses on business process framework, systems for people and safety transformation), asset integrity, fatigue management and contract mining of satellite pits.Since the commencement of the turnaround at Geita, gold production has matched market guidance. The mine has returned to positive cash flow on the basis of strong performance on cash management, improved production and increased gold price.This paper explains some of the details of the mine operationsÆ improvements, how they were implemented, their relative contributions to improved mining performance and the path ahead to best practice. Adsorption Behaviours of Humic Substances onto Iron Ore Particle Surface Humic substances extracted from lignite mainly consist of fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA), which have been successfully used as good composite binders for iron ore pellets in laboratory tests and industrial production. However, there exists a general lack of understanding of the interaction between humic substances and iron ore particles surfaces. In this research, by means of zeta potential measurements, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum, colorimetric method and Environmental Scanning Electron Micrograph (ESEM) imaging, the adsorption behaviours of FA and HA onto the surfaces of iron ore particles are investigated. The zeta potential results indicate that adsorption of FA on the iron ore particles can be characterised by specific and electrostatic interactions, while adsorption of HA is by electrostatic and chemical adsorption interactions. FTIR spectrum results show that adsorption force of FA on the iron ore particle surfaces is stronger than that of HA. From results of colorimetric method, compared with HA, adsorption amount and adsorption rate of FA is more and faster, respectively. FA molecule presents on the surface of magnetite in the shape of an araneose network structure according to the ESEM images, while HA molecule appears on the surface of magnetite in the form of small flocs or microclusters. Humic substances are effective to iron ore pelletisation. Comparsion of agglomeration results show that the different mechanisms of adsorption result in varied agglomeration behaviours. Theses findings above would be beneficial to the implications of composite binder for agglomeration.

The main techniques for removing phosphorus as an impurity element in iron ores are physical separation (eg magnetic separation, flotation) and chemical separation (acid leaching, alkaline leaching and bioleaching) processes. When phosphorus occurs in iron ores as phosphate minerals (eg apatite), physical separation techniques are available to remove the gangue minerals from iron ores. On the other hand, chemical separation techniques are suitable for reducing phosphorus levels when phosphorus is associated with iron oxides and hydroxide minerals (eg hematite and goethite) in iron ores. In this study, the dephosphorisation behaviour of high‐phosphorus iron ore was investigated using a combined alkaline roasting and water washing route. Roasting experiments were conducted in a laboratory electric muffle furnace using various concentrations of sodium hydroxide (0–50 g/kg-ore) at different temperatures (100–800°C), varying prolonged roasting times (0–2 h), and different particle size fractions (-45 – -250 μm) of iron ore. Subsequent water washing experiments were employed at various pulp densities (30–1000 g/L) and different times (30 s – 60 min) at ambient temperature. Hematite and goethite were the main minerals in the high-phosphorus iron ore identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The iron ore assaying 63.40 mass % Fe (total), 0.240 mass % P, 4.53 mass % SiO2, and 4.87 mass % Al2O3 were determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The results showed that the dephosphorisation rate of the iron ore was reached 40 per cent under roasting with 50 g/kg-ore NaOH at 300°C for 2 hours followed by water washing for 30 s with a pulp density of 300 g/L, reducing phosphorus level from 0.240 mass % to 0.142 mass %. At the same time, the iron grade was reduced from 63.4 per cent to 59.5 per cent, caused by an iron loss. Results suggest that the phase transformation of goethite induces the dephosphorisation of high-phosphorus iron ore under alkaline roasting conditions

Poorly judged or under-appreciated change plays a role in many major accidents. In particular, operational changes related to continuous improvement, maintenance and introduction of new technology can lead to unintended safety (and other) consequences. This paper provides an overview of the role of management of change in preventing unwanted impacts on safety, community relationships and the environment. It draws on a range of incidents covering mining, minerals processing, refining and smelting where inadequately assessed or ineffectively implemented change led to significant safety, environmental or community consequences. The paper will also highlight cases of well-managed complex change and the underlying model of decision-making in place to make those decisions. All these examples are drawn from Atturra’s experience in response to accidents or working with sites to improve their management systems. The paper will report on the challenges of applying conventional risk assessment approaches to complex or technically significant change. These typically result in either onerous and lengthy change procedures that are prone to workarounds or poor implementation. Conversely, ‘light touch’ or efficiency driven change processes present the risk of intended consequences by failing to bring appropriate expertise to bear in decision-making. Such balances can be resolved by considering the designation of ‘technical authority’ with appropriate expertise to consider the change and deconflict any production, cost or schedule trade-offs. Finally, the paper will reflect on the key components of management of change systems in the context of major accidents, highlighting good practice in how they are implemented. This will consider the integration of existing corporate processes, risk management and organisational structures into management of change systems, not just the content of change forms and procedures.

The development of a process for the extraction of antimony from materials produced by Greenbushes Tin Limited has been carried out based on theoretical and laboratory studies. The materials treated have included concentrates of tantalite and cassiterite containing antimony at levels ranging from 0.3% to 2%. Roasting under controlled atmospheres is required to stabilise Sb203 rather than the low vapour pressure metal or higher oxide. Sulphidising additives such as pyrite, pyrrhotite or sulphur give enhanced antimony removal from tantalite and cassiterite at roasting temperatures of 900¦ to 1100¦C. Substantial elimination of antimony to levels of 0.1% or less was Achieved.

Newcrest Mining LimitedÆs Telfer Mine is a world-class gold and copper producer, situated in the Great Sandy Desert, in the north west of Western Australia. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics such as being one of AustraliaÆs most remote mine sites, being within 270 km of the hottest town in the southern hemisphere (Marble Bar) and having been shut down and reopened after a two-year feasibility study. The construction of a new plant and reopening of the mine gave Newcrest the opportunity to review their mining practices and systems including the opportunity to incorporate reconciliation as a core process. Telfer is now well on the way to being one of the largest gold and copper concentrate producers in Australia. When the mine reopened in June 2003, Telfer implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate reconciliation of geological models, production data and plant measurements. The system was implemented on site in June 2004, as a web-based information management system, integrating other existing mining and plant software packages. It continues to provide an auditable process and consistency of data, providing ease of analysis with standard and customised reporting. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Telfer. It outlines the consolidation of a number of management systems into one centralised system that can be used to compare and reconcile the tonnes and grades from the mine through to the mill. The authors outline the key estimates and measures that are used for reconciliation at Telfer, detailing the characteristics of the system used to capture the information and the benefits that have been gained through the use of a rigorous reconciliation process on a complex orebody.

Major problems overcome include obtaining reliable pH measurements at 100¦C, prevention of scale build up in spent electrolyte heaters, blinding of jarosite filter cloths and the deposition of gypsum in filter presses.
