The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. Associated chloritic veining is indicative of single phase neutral-chloride fluids upwelling in relatively low fracture controlled nenneahility

Chrysotile asbestos is a valuable resource. Used as a reinforcement in asbestos cement, products are obtained which are cheap, are not attacked by vermin, do not rot or support growth of fungi and are unaffected by water or humid conditions. Such products are of great value in the developing countries where inexpensive and durable building materials and pressure pipe are very important to development, housing and water supplies. Concern over the adverse effects of inhaling asbestos has led to the introduction of increasingly stringent controls world wide on the quantities of airborne asbestos per- missible in the occupational situation. Wet processing has the potential for virtually eliminating the environmental concerns with asbestos dust both in fibre production and in the materials handling section of the manufac- ture of asbestos cement products. In addition, high efficiencies associated with wet process- ing mean that better yields are obtained and that the tailings which are dumped have a lower residual asbestos content. Since early 1977, ICI Australia and Woodsreef Mines have been engaged in a programme of research to develop and evaluate a wet mill- ingprocess to produce, from ore and existing tailings, high grade fibre suitable for use in asbestos cement products. The process has been developed through microscopic studies, labora- tory bench scale experiments, work in a small scale semi-continuous plant and product evalua- tion on experimental size Hatschek asbestos cement machines. A prototype mill with a normal feed rate of 1z tonnes per hour and capable of producing pipe grade asbestos from Woodsreef ore has been constructed and was operational from January, 1982 to July, 1983. A range of asbestos cement products have been made successfully on full scale Hatschek machines using fibre from ore and tailings milled in the prototype mill. Economic evaluations indicate that a wet process mill would be cheaper to build, operate and maintain than an equivalent dry process plant. A commercial plant has been designed 1. A part of the results of dissection survey of Chiba No.1 blast furnace, Kawasaki Steel Corporat- ion, is presented. Distributions of coke size and of slag and metal holdup are shown in the region of the dropping zone. A similar relation to the irri- gated packed bed is obtained. The distribution of coke size, coke temperature and liquid holdup are measured in and around the raceway. The shape of raceway in the horizontal and vertical sections indicates that each raceway worked individually. Liquid flow in the dropping zone and around the raceway on the basis of holdup measurements is Discussed.

The latest addition to the grinding circuit at Bougainville Copper Limited is another 5.5m by 7.3m primary mill (No.13). The mill can operate in a primary or secondary mode. Its distinguishing feature is its capability for speed variation, by means of a cycloconverter-fed synchronous ring motor. The engineering and metallurgical reasons for selecting such a drive system are described together with aspects of the installation and commissioning. Results of investigations into the relationship between mill speed and grinding efficiency are presented. It is concluded that mill speed variation within the range 70 to 80% of critical speed has very little effect on grinding performance. Beyond this range, grinding performance deteriorates. The same conclusions were reached when mill speed was varied at reduced ball charge levels.

Sample sizing in the iron ore industry requires significant manual effort to collect, transport, and sieve the samples as well as record, process and report the data. Efforts have been made to automate this process, which essentially emulate the manual process, except that a person is replaced by a robot. Even in these cells, the sieving and sizing operation consumes a significant proportion of robot time. The proposed doubling of production from AustraliaÆs iron ore mines over the next five years will place increasing pressure on sample sizing and interest is increasing in alternative automated methods. One such method is the adaptation of computer vision technology which has been successfully introduced into the mining industry in a range of applications including feed size distribution to SAG mills and oversize detection from screening stations. The limitation of this technology is that only the top surface is visible and this is used as an indicator of total size distribution. Obviously in a sample plant, where 100 per cent of the sample must be measured for acceptable quality assurance, this approach is unacceptable. In order to capture 100 per cent of the sample using computer vision technology a monolayer must be formed either by spreading the sample across a moving surface, such as a conveyor or vibrating platform, and passing this under a camera. This will become a æsurgingÆ load which presents specific problems for some types of computer vision systems, namely those relying on a 2D approach. In this paper a 3D computer vision technology will be described which overcomes the problems associated with measuring particle size in a monolayer and experimental results will be presented which demonstrate its effectiveness for lump and fine iron ore sample size measurement.

The Charters Towers locality has been a historically renowned gold producing region and discovery of new ore deposits during the past decade have renewed exploration interests in the area. Further mineral exploration with conventional techniques is hindered by the presence of Cainozoic sedimentary deposits and volcanic flows overlying a major portion of the basement geology. Mineral exploration thus warrants new, innovative and cost-effective methods to probe beneath the Cainozoic cover in an attempt to discover new orebodies. There is growing awareness of the role of weathering as an agent of chemical dispersion into the cover sediments as well as a producer of supergene deposits in tectonically stable cratons (Butt and Zeegers, 1992). Consequently, landscape evolution coupled with regolith geochemistry is one of the methods increasingly being used to identify relevant sampling media to explore beneath weathered cover sediments and deeply weathered bedrock terrain (Anand, 1993). The aim of this paper is to describe and elucidate the regolith - landscape features of the region and combine geochemistry to assess the pertinence of the same on mineral exploration strategies in the Charters Towers area.

The need for ventilation around mine workings derives from the various gases found in mine atmospheres and CH4, the principal diluent is in quantity depending upon several factors. Several of these are seam thickness, depth of cover and working method and the French Regulations typify controls on coal mine ventilation. There are many factors affecting production of CH4, in addition to coal production, such as the geological setting of the working seam, the geometry of workings and the rates of advance. The possibilities of spontaneous combustion should not be overlooked. The complexity of high production modern colliery layouts is such that sometimes there maybe 200 airway branches. There are specific differences in ventilation networks between the mining methods of rooms and pillars, shortwalls and longwalls as affecting resistance losses, as well as necessary airflows and ventilating

Tokyo Metropolitan Government designs the stormwater storage plans in underground, as a measure of flood control in completed urban district and improvement of combined sewarage system. This time, introducing those plans, we report about IKEJIRI and SIN-KOMAZAWA STORAGE TRUNK LINEs design and construction. They are located in Meguro river basin of the Morigasaki drainage area. Both storage trunk lines have capacity to store 15O,000m3 of stormwater. They are in use for countermeasure of flood till Meguro river's strengthening (intensity 50 mm/h) is ended. And after the strengthening, they will be in use for improvement of river water quality, through the storage of combined sewage and first runoff, which, otherwise overflows weirs and flows to river in a rainy day. These storage trunk line's full length is about 5700m. Boring diameter 66140 mm (f = 2672m) and 47800 mm (I = 2866m) of these tunnels are constructed by Mechanical Shield tunnelling method. And boring diameter 3600 mm x 4000 mm (R = 180m) is constructed by NATM tunnelling method. We began works in 1983, and have a mind to complete in 1987.

Stratiform lead-zinc mineralization in the Soldiers Cap Group and Kuridala Formation of the Mount Isa Inlier is closely associated with iron-rich sedimentary units or "iron formation", and has many similarities to the Broken Hill deposit in New South Wales. Both the Soldiers Cap Group and the Kuridala Formation have been intensively explored for deposits of this type since the early nineteen- seventies. A mineralized belt of at least eight significant prospects has been identified, of which the Pegmont deposit is the largest and best known example. In most cases the mineralized horizons contain banded galena and sphalerite within a gangue of predominantly quartz-garnet- pyroxene-amphibole rock, sometimes containing a variety of other metamorphic silicates, and apatite. Chemically, the mineralized horizons are distinguished by higher than usual levels of one or more of total Fe, MnO, CaO and P205. Interpretation of patterns of mineral- ization within the belt is based on the Pegmont deposit, where a model of base metal sulphide deposition within restricted basins of iron-rich chemical sediment has been developed (Stanton and Vaughan, 1979). Broadly, the model envisages the deposition of higher grade lead-rich mineralization in the basin centre position, lower grade zinc- rich mineralization in a basin intermediate position, and much weaker copper-rich mineralization in a basin edge position. These three positions reflect a laterally continuous arrangement of silicate microfacies within the original iron-rich sediment.

A central aim of rehabilitation is to ensure that disturbed land is returned to a post-mine condition that is safe, stable and self-sustaining. This paper describes initial results from a grazing trial at the New Acland open-cut coal mine in southern Queensland (-27.27 lat, 151.72 long) that aims to assess the sustainability and viability of cattle production from rehabilitated mined land compared to production from surrounding unmined lands (Newsome 2014). The grazing trial was established in 2013 by the Acland Pastoral Company, a subsidiary of New Hope Coal, on lands previously used for dairying, beef and crops before open cut coal mining of the Walloon coal measures began in 2002. The area has a mean annual rainfall of 640 mm. The soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is one of the most essential soil properties in unsaturated soil mechanics. The water flow and storage characteristics of an unsaturated soil are closely related to the amount of water contained in the pores and the negative pore-water pressure in the soil. These are both in turn, related to the particle-size distribution and the plasticity of the soil. The SWCC is obtained by laboratory testing which is difficult to perform, costly and time consuming. There is a significant advantage in establishing typical SWCC envelopes for different soil types from a geotechnical design and analysis viewpoint. This paper presents some of the research work undertaken by UWA and NTU to develop SWCC envelopes for soil types classified in terms of the ASTM D2487 Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). This was done by establishing a large database of soils from across the world, classifying them according to ASTM D2487 and undertaking SWCC testing for each soil. The weathering profile, in arid terrains, is commonly capped by different kinds of hardened crust, whose formation is related to recent or former climates. One may distinguish silcretes, calcretes and the ferruginous (or ferro-aluminous) laterites. the present keynote address mostly deals with the lateritic regolith and, moreover, the influence it has on mineral exploration. The lateritic regolith, also called "cuirasse", is a result of a massive accumulation of Fe (and/or Al) oxides on top of weathering profiles developed during former, probably seasonal humid, climatic episodes, and whose preservation depends on the characteristics of later climates. The total thickness of such weathering profiles commonly exceeds 50 m, with an almost complete substitution of the rock forming minerals by secondary minerals as kaolinite and Fe-Al oxi- hydroxides (hematite, goethite, boehmite, gibbsite). Such an alteration of the primary minerals assemblage is of course accompanied by significant changes of the chemical composition, as concerns major and trace elements. The latter are distributed amongst the main secondary mineral phases or trapped in some primary resistant minerals, but may also be leached, totally or partially. Gold is also affected by lateritic weathering, as shown for instance by morphoscopic and geochemical studies of gold grains collected in the different horizons of the profile, which indicates some dissolution followed by reprecipitation.

Metals Refining Operations Pty. Ltd. (NMO), PNG's only gold and silver refinery is operated by Golden West Refining Corporation Ltd (GWR), a member of the Rothschilds group and has a strong PNG ownership link through statutory shareholders. Located in Waigani, MRO has been successful in substantially increasing production through toll refining for Porgera, Misima, Tolukuma, Wapolu and, more recently, at Lihir as well as treatment of alluvial gold from smaller operations. This increased throughput has resulted in the need to constantly upgrade equipment, techniques and practices, particularly to continue quality improvements and meet market demands. The evolution of these changes are documented and discussed and the probable future development plans are detailed.

BHP New Zealand Steel produces iron from titaniferous ironsand by a direct reduction process comprising multi- hearth furnaces/rotary kilns/electric iron melters. The electric iron melter is a six-in-line rectangular submerged-arc furnace which takes the partially reduced ironsand (80% metallization) from the rotary kiln and completes the reduction process to produce iron of nominally 3% carbon. As the melter operates at around 1500 ¦C and under very hostile conditions, it is near-impossible to obtain any basic operating parameters such as the velocity and temperature distribution in the slag and in the molten iron. As a first attempt to understand the operating conditions inside the melter, a scaled room-temperature model using wax and water to represent the slag and iron, was constructed. This paper will report on some of the preliminary model results on the temperature distribution.

In 1984, work was started to determine the viability of heap leaching silver-containing waste dumps from Cerro Rico near Potosi - Bolivia, at an elevation of 4300 meters (14 100 ft.). The result today is an unusual heap leach utilizing fine crushing, grinding, and agglomeration to process 1000 tonnes per day of ore containing 200 g/tonne silver. The unique metallurgi- cal, economic, and political factors will be discussed which led to the decision to build a heap leach rather than a conventional agitation leach plant. Capital and operating costs will be given along with some of the uncommon process design and equipment problems encountered while developing the operation.

Asteroids contain an abundance of valuable resources such as: nickel, cobalt, gold, platinum and rhodium. Whilst the consumption of mineral resources on Earth continues to deplete, meteoroids have the potential to become a significant source of minerals. Even though the minerals content of asteroids may be relatively high, the valuable minerals are more likely to be only a small portion of the total ore present in the main body. The ores must, therefore, be processed to extract the metals of interest from the waste. Existing terrestrial technologies rely on manipulating the physical and chemical properties of minerals. The application of these techniques to asteroids processing, however, is not straightforward due to the presence of different conditions such as zero gravity and lack of water in space. The Division of Minerals and Geochemistry in collaboration with three mineral exploration companies, Mawson Pacific Ltd, Ramsgate Resources Ltd and Tectonic Systems Pty Ltd commenced a two year research project to investigate the application of remote sensing techniques to exploration for mineral deposits in access of the Yilgarn Block in Western Australia. The project utilizes satellite data such as day and night imagery from the NOAA-AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) satellite. The recent research with the imagery in the Kalgoorlie, Southern Cross and Mt Magnet regions has highlighted the advantages of the mid infra-red and the two thermal response channels of NOAA-AVHRR for geological investigations. These three channels have the spectral resolution to distinguish stratigraphic units and younger intrusive bodies, and to delineate fracture zones and shear zones associated with Proterozoic dykes. But most important is the capacity to distinguish thermal signatures from geological structure, near-surface outcrop and palaeochannels which have been covered by unconsolidated sediments. The research project applies remote sensing methods including enhanced satellite imagery optimised to the Western Australian environment. It encompasses data from both space and airborne monitoring platforms that have obsreved a significant spectral response for the classification of alteration zone lithologies. It includes the collection of multiseasonal data from areas of interest which is essential both for the understanding of thermal characteristics of important lithologies and for the extrapolation from field work investigation to potential exploration areas. No comprehensive investigation of this type has been carried out within the Yilgarn goldfields.

The Middle Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup contain important metallic mineral deposits like the diagenetic sediment-hosted stratiform copper mineralization, including the Troy (Spar Lake) deposit and the epigenetic hydrothermal veins in the lower Belt and Ravalli Group in the Coeur d'Alene district. Magnetite (Fe3O4) is a common and widespread accessory mineral in these rocks and can have multiple origins including ore stage in deposits, mobilization stage in source rocks, metamorphism of red beds and alteration mineral in thin halos enveloping Ag-rich veins in the Coeur dÆAlene district. As shown in several classic studies, the composition of magnetite from igneous rocks varies significantly in response to controlling factors such as melt composition, temperature, silica activity, and oxygen and sulphur fugacity. Therefore, the distinctively different geologic settings within the Belt Supergroup strongly suggest that there may be differences in the magnetite compositions. However, initial microprobe analyses detected no variation in magnetite composition.   Three possibilities may give an adequate explanation for these initial results: 1.      the magnetite formed primarily as pure Fe3O4, 2.      one or more tectonothermal events led to regional scale re-equilibration that affected all rocks in the field area, and 3.      the variations in the composition are below the detection limit of the microprobe.

Gravity concentration of gold is an important facet of gold processing technology in Western Australia. While great interest has been directed at gold leaching technology and considerable developments achieved, gravity concentration has received much less attention and this paper provides an update on the current practice and developments that have been achieved in recent years.A survey of 72 gold processing plants in Western Australia was conducted in 1991 and some 31 questionnaires were returned for analysis. Of these, 19 plants were using gravity concentration and this paper highlights some of the features of these operations.

This project evaluated the performance of nine passive treatment methods by studying 137 treatment units in eight eastern states. Performance was normalised according to construction cost, projected service life and kilograms of acid load treated. Results were dimensioned as $/kg of acid load treated/year. These costs were then compared to those of chemical treatment. Sites that achieved acid load reductions at costs below those of chemical treatment were considered successful. In addition to evaluating the performance of the treatment methods, this paper describes the various passive treatment systems, their applications and performance data for individual treatment units.
