Coal is a vital energy source and source of carbon for metallurgical applications, contributing significantly to the world economy. Coal mining and processing involve multiple processes that generate Respirable Coal Mine Dust (RCMD), one of the primary sources of health hazards for coal workers. Since 2000, the rate of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP) has continually increased in the U.S, with severity of the cases also worsening. Increasing evidence shows that exposure to RCMD in coal workers is a high-risk factor for lung cancer, which causes more deaths than the following three major cancers combined in the US Recent observations show an increased incidenceof CWP or other lung diseases, particularly among young miners in the Appalachian basin. The CWP prevalence in Appalachia is four times higher than the national average. Although various regulations are in place, the resurgence of such disease among coalminers demands additional efforts to better understand all the possible facets of coal dust toxicity, taking insights from current interdisciplinaryresearch efforts. One such important field is the interaction of coal dust with moisture in underground mines. Although moisture is prevalent and dynamic in an underground mining environment, it has never been evaluated for its impact on modifying the toxicity of coal dust and transport or flow behaviour. However, research conducted in atmospheric sciences in the past decade makes it clear that moisture in the atmosphere can significantly alter the behaviour of mineral dust. This paper is a part of research aimed at understanding how moisture interacts and alters the characteristics of coal dust. Such insight is crucial in understanding the potential toxicity of coal dust and developing mitigation technologies.

The Golden Cross is the first large precious metals mine to be both commissioned and closed in the æmodernÆ era in New Zealand. This paper discusses the life cycle of the Golden Cross mine, with emphasis on the closure process and post closure management.   The closure process has generally been very well managed, and successful, but in spite of that some on-going issues remain unresolved. Nearly nine years after the end of mining the mine owners are still actively managing the site, with no immediate end to that in sight.   The site has been described as atypical, due to the identification of a deep seated landslide below the tailings and waste rock storage facilities. However that should not be given too much emphasis when addressing the overall closure and post-closure management issues, which could well apply to other existing and future mine sites in New Zealand.   The Golden Cross can provide valuable lessons for other miners, and the issues arising at this site should be watched closely by the industry as a whole.

This paper describes the application of the Total Productive Management (TPM) technique as a performance improvement initiative for a coal mining operation. It discusses the objectives of TPM, with the driver for improved production performance being the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of the equipment or process, and with the development of "ownership" as the behavioral approach to equipment management and continuous improvement through cross-functional and area-based teams. It illustrates the concept of equipment management as defects management.The scope for application of TPM to the coal mining industry is immense. The harshness of the operating environment can be a major generator of equipment defects, and a current paradigm in the industry accepts these defects as an unavoidable outcome defining maintenance costs in this environment. However recent benchmarking studies have highlighted that maintenance costs per operating hour in some mining operations are more than double the vendor's estimate of "best practice". The paper refers to these studies which also compare maintenance costs of fixed and mobile plant and equipment to "best practice" outcomes in comparable process industries.

An image analysis system has been built which automatically digitizes camera input of rock fragments, analyses the digitised data to determine the sizes and shapes of the rock fragments, and outputs the analysed data to a printer in the form of a histogram or a scatter chart. The high speed of such a system allows for direct collection of data from material thrown into the air by blasting, material travelling on a conveyor belt, and material free-falling on to a stock-pile or into or out of a rock-crusher. Data on the blasted, un-crushed material provides information on changes in the lithology and structure of the rock face as it is quarried or mined: flatter fragments may represent approach to a brittle, unstable shear zone, or a change from sandstone to shale; so that the informa- tion reflects the effect on the sizes and shapes of the fragments by the blasting process and/or by the rock structure. The size and shape distributions of rock fragments produced during blasting and during processing may now be continuously monitored. Such detailed analysis of the results of fragmentation is labour-intensive and expensive when the size and shape distributions are obtained manually, but is cheap and efficient when using this image analysis system. Such a system will enable the results of blasting, quarrying, mining and crushing to be cheaply analysed and correlated with current and changing indus- trial practice so leading the way to increased productivity.

During underground mining operations, rock masses are highly subjected to dynamic disturbance caused by blasting, mechanical drilling and earthquakes resulting in strain burst, slabbing and spalling. The dynamic fracture is a significant manifestation of rock failure in deep underground engineering, and it is of great importance to assess the dynamic fracture behaviour of the rock mass under elevated temperature conditions. The correlation between temperature – and loading rate-dependent dynamic fracture mechanism of strain burst is yet to be established. A good understanding of the dynamic fracture behaviour of brittle rock subjected to high-temperature under dynamic loading is required for the prediction of the damage extent during strain burst, and proper design as well as control of the underground rock structures. In this study, dynamic mode I fracture toughness tests are carried out on cracked chevron notched semicircular (CCNSCB) granite specimens to reveal the dynamic fracture characteristics of the brittle rock. For this purpose, a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus is utilised to conduct the dynamic tests with various striker velocities on thermally degraded granite. The dynamic mechanical behaviour of granite after high-temperature treatment is examined and discussed. The dynamic fracture toughness is determined and compared for the specimens exposed to different temperatures at various dynamic impacts. The fracturing processes are recorded by a high-speed camera (HSC), and the crack propagation speeds are estimated by HSC image analysis. In addition, the dynamic fracture process and the coupled effects of temperature and loading rate on the dynamic fracture modes are identified by HSC image analysis. Energy partition characteristics in dynamic fracture of granite are quantitatively investigated.

Industrial flotation plant design is a complex process involving many aspects, one of which is the use of pilot-scale plants to test industrial plant flow sheets. Once test work on a pilot-scale has been performed, scale-up of these results to the full-scale plant must be performed. This paper describes scale-up test work performed on the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR). The FCTR is a self-contained, highly instrumented mobile pilot plant designed to determine flotation model parameters and to develop and validate flotation plant modelling, scale-up and simulation methodologies.

Mine site rehabilitation generally includes the re-shaping of overburden to create a final landform, manipulation of substrates and subsequent revegetation. Due to the wide range of environmental variables that influence rehabilitation progression, having clearly-stated final land-use goals and ongoing significant contributions to the planning process, from prefeasibility through to mine closure, is essential for achieving stable landforms and sustainable rehabilitated communities. Two examples of rehabilitation processes in the phosphate rich region of North West Queensland are used to illustrate some of the possible benefits of early planning and communication of rehabilitation requirements.Approximately 160 km south of Mount Isa, Incitec Pivot Limited operates a 35 year old open cut mine at Phosphate Hill. Monitoring of rehabilitation areas and selected analogue sites is undertaken annually, but the initial landform design, substrate management and species selection has created a difficult environment for revegetated areas to successfully establish. Constant management input (such as weed management, erosion control, supplementary seeding, etc) will, therefore, be required over a long time frame.The second example uses exploratory drilling and historic costean pits at Legend International HoldingÆs Paradise South site, 135 km north of Mount Isa, to determine the success of natural vegetation colonisation on waste rock and compacted soils, and the effects of cattle grazing on recolonisation. This information can be used by planners of the mine life to inform possible end-land use decisions and proposed completion criteria.In a semi-arid environment such as North West Queensland, the creation of a post-mine landscape suitable for nature conservation and/or grazing can be an arduous task. The input from environmental personnel at all stages of the mining process will positively impact upon the quality of the resulting rehabilitation and ensure undesirable legacy issues are minimised.CITATION:Gillespie, M J and Erskine, P D, 2012. The cost of constantly extending a decline tunnel that plays a part in the actual extractive process is a revenue cost. The characteristics of such a decline tunnel are that it is dug in a series of relatively small excavations. It follows the ore body and is dug as close to the ore body as practicable. In addition, the decline allows for the extraction of ore in the immediate vicinity, with the ore being extracted in a relatively short period of time.

The great variability of mineral and energy prices has motivated some governments to incorporate a windfall profits tax into their mineral taxation regimes. Windfall profits taxes are a means for governments to capture additional mineral revenue when mineral prices are considered higher than some historic level. Governments need to be aware of the effects of such contingent taxes on the exploration, development and operating decisions of mining companies. Mining companies need to be able to calculate the full impact of windfall profits taxes on the economics of their projects. This paper examines the valuation of a multi-phase copper-gold project in the presence of a windfall profits tax. Real options Monte Carlo simulation is used to characterise the different exposures of the mine owner and of the government to the risky cash flow streams that they receive from the project. The results highlight that Monte Carlo simulation paired with the real option valuation method is able to account appropriately for the differing risk exposures, while the traditional discounted cash flow valuation model is not. Our key conclusion for governments and mining companies is that the impact of contingent tax and royalty terms can and should be assessed using advanced valuation techniques, and the results used to improve contract designs under the constraint of actual and perceived fiscal system stability.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy carries out research on behalf of, and in collaboration with, the Australian mining industry. As might be expected, much of its research is directed towards improving the efficiency of alumina and gold processing plants. However, the Centre also carries out research of relevance to base and other metal producers. A key element in its work is the successful transfer of its technology to the companies with which it is working. In general, this is achieved in the following five steps:definition of the problem through discussions with the company commissioning the research; execution of the research; assessment of the research findings; testing of the research findings by pilot plant or on-site trials; and implementation of the results on the full-scale. This pattern is exemplified by the work carried out by the Centre to improve the performance of gravity thickeners which are used throughout the minerals industry for solid-liquid separation. The research has focussed mainly on ways to optimise the use of flocculants (long chain polymers) to enhance thickener performance. It has been shown that the way the flocculant is mixed with the slurry is of profound importance. Computational fluid dynamics modelling of the feedwell region of thickeners and laboratory and plant flocculation studies have been used to determine better ways to contact the flocculant with the feed slurry. Implementation of these and other findings on the full-scale confirmed that improvements in thickener performance were indeed possible. As a result of this AMIRA funded thickener technology work, there have been considerable savings to a number of Australian mineral processing companies, through improved operation, higher throughputs and flocculant savings.

The Delta two-degree quadrangle is located in west-central Utah, in the eastern Basin and Range physiographic province but near the intersection of the Basin and Range, Rocky Mountain, and Colorado Plateau provinces (Fig. 1). The quadrangle lies in the region of interior drainage that includes western Utah and most of Nevada, and, like the rest of that province, it has an arid climate. This work is part of the United States Geological Survey's ongoing CUSMAP (Conterminous United States Mineral Assessment Program) project in the Delta quadrangle. Trace-element geochemical data presented here includes information from approximately 600 heavy- mineral-concentrate and 2500 rock sample sites from throughout the Delta quadrangle.

The Kwinana Nickel Refinery began operations in 1970 processing sulphide concentrates from Kambalda using the Sherritt Gordon pressure leach and hydrogen reduction process to produce nickel metal as powder and briquette. Over the years a number of changes have seen the refinery capacity increased from the original design capacity of 15 000 tpa nickel on an all concentrate feed to its current design capacity of 42 000 tpa nickel on an all matte feed. This paper outlines the changes in plant equipment and process for the most recent refinery expansion from 35 000 tpa to 42 000 tpa which have been implemented since 1992.

The impact computers are having in geoscience is distinctly mixed. In the petroleum industry where much of the data are based on geophysics, computers have become an integral part of exploration and reservoir evaluation and simulation. In the minerals industry, the trend to computerisation is more advanced in some disciplines than others. Geophysical and remote sensing data are routinely processed and imaged using state of the art computer techniques. Mine surveying, planning, design and resource and ore reserve estimation are now all predominantly reliant on computers. However senior management of many companies, particularly in the mineral exploration industry, are still reticent to fully embrace the technology. 3D computer modelling of geology and orebody delineation is still largely in its infancy. Two current and significant drawbacks to the routine use of computer modelling of geology in both mining and exploration are the tedious and time consuming modelling process and the lack of seamless interaction between 3D computer-aided drafting (CAD) software and geographical information systems (GIS) which are largely 2D in their data treatment. There is an urgent need for a 3D spatial information system (eg 3D GIS) with intelligent and rapid modelling functionality. One of the keys to the successful building of 3D geological computer models begins with data base structure and design to ensure that there is no loss of data fidelity through data capture, storage, manipulation and modelling. Once a model is constructed, the latest generations of visualisation software provide sophisticated environments over a range of hardware platforms for visualisation in both mono and stereo viewing. The purpose of the Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnel project is to relocate the overhead power lines circuits, which currently cross the proposed site for the 2012 London Olympics in East London. This was the first contract to be awarded as an Olympic project and is on the critical path for the proposed Olympic Park as the construction of the Olympic village, stadium and other venues cannot begin until the tunnels are complete, the cables installed and the overhead power lines removed. The tunnelling works for the scheme include two parallel tunnels between Hackney and West Ham. Each tunnel is approximately 6 km in length. One tunnel is 4.15 m ID and connects the National Grid substations. The other is 2.82 m ID and connects the EDF Energy substations. The tunnels were constructed through mixed ground using four earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines. These were driven simultaneously from two drive shafts within a single site. The 12 km of main tunnels were constructed within a year from start to finish, with completion in June 2007. The shafts range between 6 m and 15 m ID. These were constructed using a combination of caisson sinking and underpinning techniques. Dewatering was adopted to suit the groundwater conditions.Other works include the design and construction of the head house buildings, cable and ventilation culverts, mechanical and electrical (M&E) installations and all associated works. In addition to the above, a further 1 km of tunnel and two shafts were added to the project scope connecting the EDF Energy tunnel to the substation at Bow. These additional works provided further challenges to the project to ensure that these works were constructed within the program constraints for the 2012 London Olympics. This involved refurbishing one of the tunnel boring machines from the main EDF Energy tunnel drives and relaunching the machine to construct the Bow tunnel. The Bow tunnel was constructed within two and a half months, with the tunnel boring machine breaking through in August, ahead of schedule. The main challenge presented by this project is the program constraints. This project outlines the requirement for team work between the client, stakeholders, contractor and designer in order to provide program certainty. A close working relationship between the contractor and the designer is required to provide value engineered, time-saving solutions to mitigate the risks associated with the design and construction program.
