The Sangdong Tungsten/Molybdenum Deposit is located in the Republic of Korea and was discovered in 1916. At this time Korea was a colony of Japan. It was mined for two years after discovery closing in 1918. Full production recommenced in 1933, and from that point until 1945, it was the major source of tungsten for armour plate for the Japanese military. After World War 2 the US government ran the mine until late 1946. The mine operation then passed to Korean ownership but production ceased during the Korean War and did not recommence until late 1953. The mine ceased operation in 1992 due to low metal prices. From the late 1960s to the time of closure, Sangdong was the largest tungsten mine in the world (Kim, 2002). An understanding of changing mining methods over time has been critical in assessing the potential of redeveloping the Sangdong Deposit.

The production of copper by the Outokumpu direct blister process commenced in July 1988. The problems and incidents encountered in commissioning the main smelter equipment are outlined. Early difficulties were encountered in process control, hot metal handling, dust buildup in the off gas handling equipment, waste heat boiler tube failures, foam over of hot metal into the waste heat boiler and failure of ancilliary equipment.

Australia has historically been a world leader in mining innovations. This trend is reflected in the international patent records, which show that in recent years there has been some recovery in the number of patent filings arising from Australian research. These innovations occur across a wide cross-section of mining technologies and derive from both public and private sector research. Australian mining innovations are largely dominated by new processes and equipment, principally in the areas of rock drilling and coring, strata stabilisation, cutting tools, blasting, mine design and oil field exploitation. They include improvements in drill bits, rock bolts and accessories and wellbore systems. Another area that has received significant research attention has been the in situ thermal processing of coal deposits. High profile examples of Australian mining innovations include the æSORDMinerÆ, a remote-controlled mining machine for use in mining collapsing wet environments, and CSIROÆs SMART*CUT rock cutting pick that dramatically increases the rate of cutting hard rock. This paper will provide an overview of recent innovations in Australian mining, as reflected in the international patent records, including the organisations and individuals active in the field, and the technological nature of specific innovations.

The bureaucracy in Victoria has worked against exploration and mining development. There is no doubt that the new Mineral Resources development Act has simplified matters on the mining side of the system. However, WMC's Bendigo and Deep Lead experiences demonstrate that other parts of the bureaucracy can cause serious delays. The mining industry continues to view the approval process causal of excessive costs and delays compared with other States (and countries) and prohibitive to investment in Victoria.

The basic principles of mineral valuation were recognised and propounded at the beginning of this century and have remained virtually unchanged since then. Valuation is seen as a two part process commencing with a technical examination of the mineral property followed by a manipulation of the results of the technical examination in order to determine the monetary value of the project. A thorough and competent technical examination was seen then and remains now as the essential but not sufficient foundation for reliable valuation. All authors stressed the need to maintain the integrity of the data base and to ensure adequate coverage of all relevant aspects. The monetary valuation process through most of the first half of this century was mainly based on the Hoskold two rate method, derived from the formulae for valuing annuities but modified to provide explicitly for recovery of capital. Though the basic principles of valuation have not changed significantly, the means of implementing the components of the technical examination, the styles of deposits being evaluated and the mechanisms of monetary valuation have changed dramatically. A process for eliminating nickel from electrolytic zinc plant solutions by precipita- tion with dimethylglyoxime (DMG) was developed to enable the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) to treat nickel-bearing zinc dust precipitates. These precipitates are leached to recover their Cd and Zn content. The final Zn bearing solutions contain relatively high Ni concentra- tions (20-100 mg/1) and are treated with DMG and then neutralized to pH 4.6-4.8. The pre- cipitate is filtered off and the solution returned to circuit. DMG consumption is about 200% of theo- retical requirement, and Ni removal is 80% complete overall.

The major coalfields of Australia are almost unique in the occurrence in some areas of CO partly or almost completely replacing CH4,t1e normal seam gas from metamorphism of coal due to time and depth of burial. This CO2 situation has some benefits but mostly it introduces particular safety problems result- ing from the high density of CO2 relative to air, magnifying problems of gas dilution in ventilation, and the greater affinity which coal has for CO2 than for CH4 increasing proneness to gas-dynamic phenomena. The occurrence of most CO2 seam gas can be directly related to igneous intrusion and to its associated pneumatolytic injections. Whilst intrusions locally increase the rank of coal by their contact metamorphic effect, normal coal metamorphism due to time and depth of burial continues after intrusion and injection together with the ongoing metamorph- ic production of CH . This new CH slowly displaces any CO to leave some present-day intruded coals with seam gas with reduced CO2 or even without any significant CO2 associat- ions. The seam gas maps of the Bowen and Sydney Basins and more detailed maps of specific areas exemplify these situations. Mining progress, plus more searching studies of igneous-coal relationships provide improved understanding of the factors involved.

In 1953, Dr N Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of The Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H H Dunkin, Associate Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor); E A Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide; J D Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer, to consider the report on this subject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its frrst report to the Council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposals. A large number of replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report, in part as follows:From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the frrst report of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all of the following grounds:a. number of categoriesb. defmition of categoriesc. nomenclature.It is also apparent that all alternatives suggested in the various replies would likewise be unacceptable to the majority of those replying.As a result, we have come to the conclusion that neither this Committee nor any other could at present and in the present state of opinion on the subject make recommendations regarding classification and nomenclature of ore reserves which would be acceptable to a sufficiently large proportion of members.It seems to us now that the objective of a widely applicable and acceptable system of classification and nomenclature, one that could be endorsed by The Institute and ultimately become standard practice in the industry, requires more than compromise between present conflicting views... it requires first a foundation of substantial agreement on the essential facts, implications and range of ore reserve estimation. This does not yet exist and it is evident that much additional analysis of present practice and opinion must be undertaken before any further systhesis is attempted.

Renison Goldfields is one of Australia's largest mining companies with annual sales revenue over $600 million. It has ten operating mines and processing plants, with operations in most States of Australia and in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the United States. The exploration division is active in,other parts of the world, including Europe and South America. RGC produces gold, copper, tin, coal and mineral sands. RGC is typical of companies in the mining industry in that by contrast to the typical pattern in other industries, it is necessary to have systems to handle a variety of different types of operations, a range of size of operations, and operations in remote locations.

Magmatism is of first order significance in the extension process. Continental extension is terminated when sea-floor spreading commences, but sea-floor spreading will not commence if magmas do not begin to arrive in sufficient volumes. In the oceanic lithosphere, the rate of magma supply may determine whether sea-floor spreading takes place, or lithospheric extension as the result of normal fault arrays. In continental crust thickened as the result of previous compressional orogeny, the availability of magma may determine a completely different process. The author has examined metamorphic core complexes in a number of tectonic environments, in the North American Cordillera, in the Aegean Sea, Greece, and in the Solomon Sea, Papua and New Guinea. What these terrains have in common is a major collisional orogeny predating a major extensional event. The "roll back" of the lithospheric flexure associated with subduction can be seen as the "driving force" for extension in two of these cases. Metamorphic core complexes in these environments are characterized by domal exposures of crustal scale ductile shear zones, underneath which massive plutonic complexes have been formed. Emplacement of these plutons is associated with anatexis of the surrounding rocks. Migmatite complexes are well developed in the Aegean and Solomon Sea core complexes, and in some core complexes in the Basin and Range. Chains of core complexes can be explained as the result of basaltic and andesitic magmas derived from a linear belt of relatively hot rising asthenosphere, in a zone of attempted continental "break up". It is argued that core complexes are the results of magmas derived from relatively short lived mantle "hot spots" impingeing on extending continental crust which has been overthickened during previous compressional orogeny.

Traditional methods of resource modelling and mine planning rely upon geostatistical methods applied to exploration drill core data to derive a three dimensional model of the distribution of metal grades, quantised into rectangular prisms or blocks. The resulting block model is a primary input into short, medium and long term mine planning. However, block attributes are averaged or interpolated over a complete block, meaning that information at smaller scales is lost to the mine planning process. Grade engineering for new mining methods, such as the development of more accurately controlled blast designs, continuous miners for hard rock and sensors for rock properties that can be distributed along the operations process and value chain, allows excavation to be much more selective than traditional blasting, and provides data for driving earlier separation of waste from ore. This selectivity can be optimised if the resolution of resource models can match or exceed the spatial resolution of selective mining technologies. Opportunities for selective mining increase as a deposit becomes more heterogeneous. This leads to an interest in methods for estimating the distribution and characteristics of mineral heterogeneity within the ore-body. A highly effective binder for iron ore pellet making is obtainable from bituminous materials produced in the high temperature cracking of crude oils. This paper deals with production process and basic properties of this binder as well as new applic- ations in the field of iron ore pelletizing.

The present discussion focuses on the developmental directions of eco-restoration of acid mine waste rock dump, by using acid mine waste rock of Shuilong Mountain as an example. Based on the analysis of site factors, the current slope ecological restoration technologies of domestic and international and local practices have been integrated into the eco-restoration of acid mine waste rock in Shuilong Mountain. A set of suitable slope Eco-restoration technologies have been formulated locally for acid mine waste rock of Shuilong Mountain, which include establishing green barrier, implementing ecology buffer zones, selecting suitable plant species and combined seeding and tube-stock planting. Environmental legislation is changing rapidly throughout Australia at the present time, and with that change comes additional responsibilities for the mining and petroleum industries. Among the many changes that are being made are increased penalties for both criminal and accidental environmental impairment. The defences for criminal offences are limited and for other offences the laws may impose strict liability - in effect the offender is guilty until proven innocent. Mines may be included under contaminated land legislation, creating additional liabilities for clean-up, rehabilitation and long-term management. It is not unknown in Australia for the value of a mortgaged property to be less than the amount of the environmental liability acquired by a mortgagor in possession due to contamination of the site. An essential part of the management program for resource projects is now the regular conduct of an environmental audit, the results of which assist in the management of the legal and financial liabilities facing company directors and managers. The audit can also assist with negotiations with government agencies, staff, unions, insurers, Aboriginal and other community groups. An environmental audit may also help to ensure that companies are claiming the maximum allowable deductions for environmental works under the tax laws, and provide evidence in support of such claims. Environmental legislation affecting resource industries Environmental legislation in Australia is changing rapidly and can impose massive constraints, substantial administrative costs, and considerable liability on directors, managers and the corporation. Pollution control legislation Every State and Territory of Australia has a range of pollution control legislation contained in either individual acts relating to air, water, noise and land, or embodied in a single environment protection act. Pollution control legislation provides a critical management baseline for resource industries throughout Australia, often requiring the full-time attention of an environmental manager or an environmental department. In general, it is an offence to discharge effluents into water, or emit gases into the atmosphere above prescribed limits, cause noise above a regulated level, or contaminate land without a licence. A licence determines how much of a substance can be discharged, the location, the receiving environment, the quality, and the time at which discharges can be made or noise can be caused. Planning legislation Planning legislation controls where a project is located, how it will be constructed and operated, how large it is allowed to be, and what will happen once the project is completed. Development consents or approvals will generally contain a range of conditions controlling the preparation of the site, the construction of the facility and the way it is operated throughout its expected life time. Resource projects may be regarded under legislation as scheduled or designated developments requiring special treatment during the decision-making process. Under planning legislation, it is usual for resource projects to be subject to an environmental impact assessment process. Resource legislation Resource legislation specifically covering mining and petroleum in Australia, also contains requirements regarding protection of the environment during exploration for and extraction of minerals and oil. A mining or petroleum production lease usually contains numerous conditions regarding protection of the environment and rehabilitation of the site during and after the life of the extractive process.

Pajingo gold mine produces over 240 000 oz Au per year from underground mining using longitudinal bench stoping methods with a 15 m sublevel interval. Average mine head grade is around 12 g/t Au, contained within quartz veins between 0.5 to 16 m wide. The veins dip steeply (>60¦) and exhibit strike variations which lead to many curved and meandering drive/stope geometries. Unplanned dilution at Pajingo is predominantly controlled by fault planes that subparallel the vein and commonly lead to slabbing failure from the stope walls. Initial efforts at determining maximum spans were based on using the Stability Graph method of stope stability. However the method had a number of shortcomings that did not address mine site observations, including previous mining, interaction of different joint sets and the presence of discrete shears which resulted in poor prediction of stability. A method was developed to rate the risk of dilution for a stope based on observations made in the ore drives. The method utilises profile mapping of the ore drive, structural features observed and the orebody itself, on 10 m spaced sections along the ore drive. A matrix of factors determines the dilution risk for stoping at the time of mapping and the rating is transferred to longsection plots in the office. The dilution risk rating is used to determine the position and density of cable bolt support aimed at lessening the risk, and can be used to review blasthole designs prior to finalisation. The method has been used for more than two years and has proven to be a good indicator of potential unplanned dilution (ie waste outside of ring design). A recent review of the dilution risk mapping process has indicated it is assisting in reducing the impact of dilution at the operation and has the scope to be utilised further in the design process.

Magneto flotation is a recently developed method aimed at simultaneous utilisation of the magnetic and flotation properties of minerals in separation processes. In this method, magnetic minerals are prevented from reporting to the froth product while non-magnetic minerals are being floated. With suitable ores, this makes it possible to reduce or entirely eliminate the cleaning and scavenging operations that are otherwise necessary in conventional flotation and magnetic separation systems. This paper describes the testing of magneto flotation on a Canadian magnetite ore. The ore sample used in the experimental work contained a total of 32.89 per cent Fe of which 87.60 per cent was magnetic in the form of magnetite. Magnetoflotation yielded, in a single step, a final concentrate assaying 69.10 per cent Fe and with an overall recovery of 84.84 per cent representing a magnetic iron recovery of 96.39 per cent. Comprehensive comparisons were made with conventional magnetic separation and flotation, and it was found that with these methods at least four processing steps were required to achieve results similar to those obtained with single-stage Magnetoflotation.

Stringent environmental benchmarks imposed by governments and successful legal challenges in the country of origin have changed the risk profile for all mining companies over recent years. In developing countries, however, where high government standards may not always be in place, direct community action has often made worthless substantial investments in otherwise viable mining operations. Real limitations are therefore imposed from these risks on all areas of mining activity, wherever they may be. Thus, the bar has been raised for all companies developing or operating mines. This paper argues real financial and global industry reputation benefits accrue when all known environmental risks, where practical, are managed. In response, among major international mining companies, as the industry moves towards greater global consolidation, senior management teams have increasingly adopted corporate governance standards including æTriple Bottom LineÆ (shareholder/government/community) sustainability reporting. Sustainability reporting is encouraged by improved international stockholder and financial investor perceptions by contributing to lowered social, community and geopolitical risk which lowers the cost of access to funds as well as improving staff morale and productivity. New mines must not only be primarily financially viable but must operate throughout in a sustainable way. Case studies of some recent mining operations, who have not foreseen or proactively managed major environmental risks, demonstrate the dire financial and personal implications for managers, directors and shareholders from not identifying and managing these environmental risks. Merely having a corporate policy statement on environmental standards or high level Government approvals process for a mining activity does not preclude mining operations from the risk of direct action by local populations or future adverse legal implications from risks which were perhaps identified but not mitigated effectively. Methods and processes for the identification and active management of environmental risks in the global arena are discussed to add a practical element to sustainability, based on the authors recent strategy development processes with governments and major mining houses such as BHPBillition, Rio and Xstrata. Emphasis is placed on proactive, innovative yet practical solutions which, where possible, show positive contributions firstly to the financial bottom line but also the community at large.

This paper examines the methods and people required for the evaluation of project or corporate acquisitions. Experience over the past five years has shown that some growth can be achieved by carefully evaluated acquisition of gold projects within regions where the acquiring company has gold processing facilities. Many Western Australian companies have participated in this process and the trend seems likely to continue with a diminishing number of larger producing companies controlling through joint venture or direct purchase of widely spaced ore deposits. In some cases the acquisition may include ore processing facilities, however an increasing number of smaller project acquisitions, involving small open pit gold deposits, which are within trucking distance of the acquiring company's mill. Whilst gold prices remain at the current depressed level we can expect to see this trend continue.

The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100,000 m3 of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity in New Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.

The process started in the WA gold and nickel mines and has since spread around the nation to iron ore, base metals and coal mines.The mine contracting industry has progressed from tentative beginnings in the 80s to the current situation where it is now providing high standards of professional management, safety and workmanship with competent people and high quality plant and equipment.
