The Jameson Cell is a high intensity flotation device, which utilises induced air from the atmosphere. It was developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines and Professor Graeme Jameson of the University of Newcastle in the 1980s. It is proven to generate fine bubbles, in the order of 300 to 500 ¦m, in a high intensity, high shear and compact zone contained in the downcomer. This aerated mixture exits the downcomer into the pulp zone, which is the quiescent mineral and gangue separation zone. A number of Australian base metal flotation circuits feature a reverse flotation stage at the head of the circuit. Testwork and plant operating data has shown that the use of a Jameson Cell in the prefloat cleaner application has further improved prefloat gangue recovery and selectivity. Operation of a Jameson Cell in a carbonaceous/pyrite prefloat cleaner duty at the Mt Isa copper concentrator increased copper recovery and reduced pyrite in the copper concentrate. Testwork at Zinifex Century Zinc Mine showed a decrease in zinc losses by the utilisation of Jameson Cell prefloat cleaner. Appraisal of a Jameson Cell in a scalping role within the Mt Isa Copper Concentrator indicated significant benefits could be achieved.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Traditional models employed to genetically link associated chromite and platinum-group elements have favoured crustal contamination as the primary process for inducing sulfide and oxide saturation. The association of chromite ores with crustal contamination is well established in the literature. However, in the 1970s (cf Irvine, 1973, 1975), Irvine demonstrated that crustal contamination was in fact problematic as a tool for inducing chromite precipitation in mafic to ultramafic magmas. His results are re-examined here, along with some attempts to reconcile them with the effects of adding Fe to the models. It is concluded that crustal contamination is indeed problematic based on phase relationships alone. However, the role of fluids as a compensating agent is evaluated, which may explain why crustal contamination may indeed facilitate oxide and sulfide precipitation.CITATION:Prevec, S A, 2015. Combining ultramafic mine tailings and acidic mine drainage via mineral carbonation to sequester carbon dioxide, presents an opportunity to minimise waste on mine sites. Low pH mine water with trace element concentrations can be effectively treated by high magnesium mine tailings, a useful source of finely ground reactive matrix. By using milled tailings for mineral carbonation, there are negligible energy requirements for communition of ore rocks to reduce particle size. This study aimed to assess the technical applicability of reacting ultramafic tailings and acidic mine water through mineral carbonation technology in the mining industry. Dissolution has been identified as the rate limiting stage in mineral carbonation; hence the study focused on identifying optimal dissolution conditions. Ultramafic tailings (particle size <100 µm) derived from serpentinite ore, were reacted with a typical mine water that was synthesised in the laboratory. Through variances in the solid to liquid ratios and temperature of dissolution, a maximum five per cent magnesium dissolution efficiency was reached at 50 g/L and 100°C. The acidic mine water was neutralised (from pH <2 to pH ~6) and iron, copper and zinc ion concentrations reduced significantly during the formation of solid precipitates. Carbonation was undertaken by injecting carbon dioxide into the magnesium-rich solution to form stable carbonates. The experimental work demonstrated proof of concept; however, dissolution efficiency and carbon dioxide sequestration was low, indicating that further research would be required before larger scale implementation.CITATION:Malli, H, Bouzalakos, S and Timms, W, 2015. The A J Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy has recently been established by a major grant from the Australian Commonwealth Government. The participating institutions in this centre are the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, Curtin University of Technology, Murdoch University and the Chemistry Centre (WA). The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association is also a partner. Information is presented about the research activities of the Parker Centre, which are focussed on the solid/solution interface. Three research programs have been established in the areas of leaching, precipitation and surface processes (adsorption). The initial projects within these three programs are described. Details are also given of the Centre's education program which include honours degree training, masters and doctoral degrees by research, a masters degree by course work and workshops. The importance of collaboration with industry to the successful operation of the centre is stressed.

The Bendigo Goldfield is AustraliaÆs second largest goldfield, having produced 22 million ounces of gold between 1851 and 1954. Development of the modern decline mine, initially for underground exploration and bulk sampling, commenced in 1998. The project is targeting new reefs below and along from historic workings beneath the city of Bendigo. The major technical challenge for the project is the inability to solely use drill core gold assays to estimate the grade of reefs, due to the coarsegrained nature of gold mineralisation, known as the nugget effect. In 2002, a program of bulk sampling commenced, resulting in the development of factors for converting drill hole grades to in situ reef grades. In mid 2006 commercial production commenced following the construction of a 600 000 t/yr processing plant adjacent to the Kangaroo Flat Mine portal, with plant feed being derived from four reefs in the Sheepshead and Deborah lines of reef. In early 2007 it became clear that the initial ore reserves had been overestimated, leading to an immediate change of strategy from production to exploration. A cash conservation program was also put in place. Exploration refocused onto the more historically productive Garden Gully and New Chum lines of reef, whilst a new grade estimation tool based primarily on the visual assessment of drill core was implemented. Immediate exploration success occurred with the discovery of four reefs in the Garden Gully line in early 2007. Successful step-out drilling during the year led to the decision to undertake trial mining in Gill reef. Trial production commenced in June 2008 and includes the processing of discrete ore blocks and the introduction of selective mining techniques. This paper examines the steps that have been taken to refocus exploration and to gain confidence in new exploration results, particularly through the visual grade estimation technique and assessment of trial mining Gill reef on the Garden Gully line. In addition, project factors relating to human skills, community relationships and financial management in a dynamic external environment are also addressed.

Oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfides is accelerated by the activity of acidophilic iron- and sulfur-oxidising microorganisms. The ideal biocide for controlling biocatalysed acid rock drainage (ARD) would be inexpensive, inhibitory toward sulfide-oxidising bacteria at low concentrations, relatively non-toxic toward non-target organisms, degradable in the environment outside the zone of application, stable and long-lived in the impacted environment, sufficiently mobile to penetrate into piles of waste rock or tailings, and effective regardless of the metal sulfides present. A potent agent for combating ARD that fits these criteria is the thiocyanate anion (SCN-). The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of thiocyanate in controlling or preventing ARD within several types of sulfidic waste rock and tailings. Results were evaluated within a context encompassing process water and solids management strategies employed at different precious and base metal mines. Sulfidic rock was treated with solutions of potassium thiocyanate and subjected to accelerated weathering tests in lab-scale humidity cells, trays, and columns. Certain tests also utilised solid phase copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) to evaluate a ærelease on demandÆ strategy. Leach solutions were analysed for parameters indicative of ARD including pH, redox potential, conductivity, acidity, sulfate, iron, and certain heavy metals. Two larger scale field tests were also initiated by personnel at separate mines using, in the first case, ore containing a pyritic component in large columns and, in the second case, waste rock containing base metal sulfides in lined pits. Humidity cell tests showed low concentrations of thiocyanate solution applied to pyritic waste rock could reduce ARD formation by 90 per cent or more compared to untreated controls, with the residual release of ARD components (eg sulfate, Fe, acidity) probably reflective of strictly chemical oxidation of the sulfides by molecular oxygen. Thiocyanate applied at a concentration of 22 mg/kg to waste rock from a base metal mining operation in large laboratory scale columns reduced acidity and sulfate release by 75 per cent to 80 per cent compared to untreated controls. This extent of reduction in ARD may not meet discharge water quality criteria, but has the potential to significantly reduce lime consumption and sludge production in a conventional neutralisation facility. The use of a solid-phase metal thiocyanate compound (CuSCN) at a dosage of 194 mg/kg pyritic ore resulted in the following per cent reductions in leach solution parameters in comparison to controls: sulfate (78 per cent), acidity (93 per cent), dissolved Fe (99.4 per cent), and dissolved arsenic (99.9 per cent). This compound has the further advantage of being relatively stable until needed, dissolving only in the presence of an acidic and oxidising ARD solution. If this line of investigation progresses favorably, it offers the possibility of an ARD prevention technique that may be applicable in some settings. Mine-site pilot scale tests with pyritic ore resulted in reductions in sulfate (56 per cent) and Fe, As (66 - 68 per cent). In sum, thiocyanate at relatively low concentrations dramatically reduced ARD from sulfidic rock in a simulated heap. The pilot test using waste rock containing base metal sulfides has begun only recently. A preliminary process design and cost estimate was made for fullscale application of thiocyanate to waste rock at a hypothetical gold mining operation producing 5000 tpd of ore and 10 000 tpd of sulfide containing waste rock. The combined capital and operating costs for the full-scale thiocyanate application facility were about $US 0.25/tonne of waste rock and $US 0.50/tonne of ore. Although thiocyanate is readily available commercially, it also occurs in process solutions associated with certain types of mining processes. Such solutions after selective treatment might be recycled to sulfidic waste rock or tailings, rather than being treated for thiocyanate degradation.

This paper reports a computational study using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in a mine ventilation system. Ambient air is injected to a rectangular mine drive through a circular duct. Moisture evaporates from shaft wall depending on flow properties of air in the drive-duct system. The physical process involves simultaneous momentum, heat and mass transfer. A species transport equation is employed to account for the moisture concentration in air. The momentum equation is solved using standard k- model, while energy and species transport equations are solved using standard expressions for moisture evaporation rate and heat flux from the drive wall. The aim of this paper is to investigate effectiveness of CFD simulation in relation to mine ventilation in a drive where a significant mass transfer phenomenon occurs. Results from simulation are compared with existing data from a site in Victoria.

ABSTRACT' The first references to gold in New Guinea were by the Portuguese in 1525. The first significant discovery and gold rush was on Sudest Island in 1888 and was a natural extension of the rush that surged up Australia's eastern coast and ended at cook- town. Prospectors made a series of minor discoveries in coastal regions before the first large discovery at Wau/Edie Creek/Bulolo in 1925. Major post war gold discoveries were made at Bougainville, Frieda River, Porgera and Ok Tedi. On Misima Island a large bulk low grade deposit has been recognised surrounding old gold workings. Gold exploration has increased drama- tically since the lifting of a 3 year moritorium on new exploration areas in Noverrber 1982. A new bulk low grade gold discovery has been made on Lihir Island, north of Bougainville and a number of other promising areas are being drilled. Gold production is also expanding dramatically from current levels of 600,000 ounces to an anticipated 1.3 million ounces in 1985 with the opening of Ok Tedi. Other potential developments are likely to increase output above 2 million ounces by 1990. Papua New Guinea's world ranking as a producer is likely to move from 9th to 7th in 1985 reflecting the favourable geological potential, stable political environment and attractive development terms offered by the Government.

Technology transfer is a vital requirement for increasing national capability of coal mine production in Indonesia. The term can cover the introduction of new equipment, facilities and processes and approaches to training and education. Constraints on technology transfer within the Indonesian coal mining industry are reviewed. The contributions that foreign companies working within the industry can make are discussed. It is concluded that the development of major Indonesian coal mines needs input of advanced foreign technology. The foreign mining companies are investing significant capital in operations and are permitted to import outside expertise due to some lack of national skills. Expatriate employees are expensive and have a direct effect on profitability. The success of any replacement program of foreign employees is dependent on technology transfer. There are statutory Indonesian Government directions to reduce dependency on foreign expertise over time.

Past experience has shown that the automation of the dragline swing motion requires real time monitoring of the bucket position. A current project at the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is aiming to achieve this using machine vision. The hardware platform is a Datacube MaxVideo 200 system. The images are obtained by a fixed camera installed on the dragline boom. The field of view is large enough to include the bucket in all possible configurations. Standard chain coding and run-length coding algorithms are used to process the video image. The three-dimensional bucket position is calculated by combining the output of the machine vision system with the rope length data obtained from transducers installed on drag and hoist drums. This information is then fed into a control computer which takes corrective action to suppress bucket oscillations before they reach dangerous levels.

Commercial pelletizing commenced in 1955 to agglomerate very fine concen- trates which could not be fed directly to the blast furnace. Extensive develop- ment has taken place and is continuing. There are now three main heat hardening processes in use. Plants are operating, or under construction, throughout the world capable of producing in excess of 125 million tons per year of pellets from concentrates or direct mined orefines. The Whyalla Pellet Plant, which commenced production in May 1968, is examined in detail to illustrate the general principles of pelletizing. This plant converts high grade iron ore fines into high quality pellets at a rate in excess of 2 million tons per year.

Because of the mineralogical complexity of nickeliferous laterites, most commercial and laboratory extractive processes require the ore to be blended to a feed of "constant" chemical composition. Even using the "constant" feed there are significant variations in processing behaviour within and between different feed lots. Chemical and mineralogical analyses of lumps of ore taken from the Yabulu stockpile of Queensland Nickel have highlighted the complex- ity of the ore making up the blended feed material. Each sample has been subjected to acid leaching and reduction/ammonia leaching tests and the results correlated with the mineralogical location of the nickel. The consequences of the variability in ease of leaching of the nickel are indicated.

At Hilton Mine, 18 kilometres north of Mount Isa, the silver-lead-zinc sulphide bodies have undergone strong deformation in the form of folding and later faulting and brecciation in the hangingwall region of the mine. Variation in grades and widths over compara- tively short distances causes problems regarding accurate sampling of orebody exposures in underground development, and in defining confidence limits for the extrapolation of ore intersections in ore reserve calculations. The paper gives a preliminary insight into the problem of obtaining representative samples for exposed orebodies and discusses the sampling techniques employed. Results gained from these sampling methods could not be verified due to lack of individual bulk samples for comparison but strong evidence for precision was provided. INTRODUCTION In a developing mine like Hilton, accurate grade information is of extreme importance. Original grade information for a potentially viable ore deposit is gained from surface drilling, and initial ore estimates are calculated from the resultant ore widths and grades. Unraveling geological complexity and understanding geological risk are critical components of the challenge that face any mining or exploration venture. This understanding is essential to the successful selection of mineralised domains on which grade estimation relies, so knowledge of the geological characteristics of the mineralised domains is vitally important. æNuggetyÆ mineralisation introduces a higher level of risk and geological observation and intuition may be the only option to ensure that opportunities are realised and ore/waste characterisation is undertaken successfully. Mineralisation at the world class Sunrise Dam gold mine contains a significant coarse gold component, which has necessitated the development of a systematic visual approach to decision making that enables geological staff to determine the potential gold grade in the absence of assay results, and in those instances when assay results appear implausible. The development of the Mineralisation (MZ) Code at Sunrise Dam has assisted in reducing the risk of misclassifying ore as waste and enabled geological control to prevail with confidence where complexity and ambiguity existed.

In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

Tahmoor Mine is located in the southern Sydney Basin 80km south-west of Sydney and produces 1.2 MT of Bulli Coal annually. Bord and pillar methods used to date will be supplemented by a longwall system. Difficult roof conditions have been experienced since mining began in 1979. A dominantly horizontal stressfield promotes shear failure in the thinly interbedded roof sequence of shales, laminites, siltstones and fine sandstones. General roof conditions and failure characteristics are related to the angle between the roadway direction and the principal horizontal stress direction. The apparent stressfield changes direction, magnitude and the ratio of principal horizontal components across the mine workings in response to both in situ and mining induced causes. Initial roof support of 5 x 2.1 m bolts per W-strap at in intervals, with mesh, was upgraded to include RSJ's in order to support areas of failed roof. This support system was inefficient and costly. A third system of support emphasizes roof reinforcement with full resin encapsulation of 2.1 m bolts in W-straps. The number of bolts per strap (6-8), extra butterfly straps and bolts, and W-strap spacing is determined for each area by expected roof and stress conditions. Intersections are pre-bolted and ribs are supported in some areas. Pillar dimensions, order of drivage and roadway width have each been altered to improve roof control. The intensity of roof deformation at the face varies from panel to panel and causes development rates to decrease to 30% of the maximum. 1. Manager, Tahmoor Mine, Tahmoor, N.S.W. 2. Roof conditions in each area of the mine are characterised and then projected to future development areas based on the relationship between stressfield orientation, relative roadway direction and face conditions. Planning information available includes expected development rates, roof support requirements and areas of changing conditions. Future improvements of strata control involve defining support design parameters for the range of mine conditions already seen at Tahmoor.

Modern mining and coal cleaning techniques lead to the generation of large quantities of fines which give rise to problems in their storage, handling, transportation and further processing. Pelletisation, a method of particle agglomeration, can alleviate such problems. This paper provides a brief overview of the principles of pelletisation and a survey of the coal pelletisation literature. Then it reports results from an experimental investigation of the effect of surface active reagents on coal pelletisation. Finally the paper is concluded with a few remarks on applying the results from the experimental study to practical coal agglomeration.

During the period 1981 - 1991, Esso Australia and their Joint Venture partners have discovered about 180 MB of liquids (crude and condensate), 60 MB natural gas liquids and 800 - 1000 GCF of gas. A total of 48 wildcat wells were drilled including 12 new pool discoveries drilled from platform facilities. Significant discoveries include the West Tuna, Kipper, Blackback and Terakihi fields. These four discoveries, contribute to 75 per cent of the total reserves discovered in the last decade and were all high-risk plays. The Kipper discovery, in the pre-Latrobe Golden Beach Group top sealed by volcanics, and the Blackback-Terakihi discoveries, located on the present day continental slope in water depths ranging from 300-700 metres are both the result of successful drilling outside the traditional exploration bounds for the basin. During the last decade, Esso and its partners have spent about A$400M on wildcat exploration activity. The exploration success rate, excluding platform based drilling, has been 50 per cent for wildcat wells. On a technical front, the last decade has heralded substantial improvements in seismic data quality. Peak frequency content in seismic data at the Latrobe Group target levels is now double that of the early 1980s. Significant advances have also been made in our understanding of sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry and geohistory of the basin.
