When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

Importance of Strain to Fragment Strength in Blasting Induced Pre-Conditioning When a rock is blasted, cracks propagate through the rock causing the rock to fracture. This paper focuses on applying the results from a series of small scale blasting tests were designed to show the effect that varying blast variables such as explosive type and explosive energy have on the resulting strength of the post blast fragments. It was shown that the velocity of detonation of the explosive product affects the reduction of fragment strength. This has important implications for the downstream comminution process. The observations from these tests are then explained with reference to the principles of fracture mechanics. A simple but effective prediction of blast induced preconditioning is shown.

The flow function of an iron ore material governs its flowability characteristics in material handling chains within the resource industry. A uniaxial compression test is able to obtain a flow function more rapidly comparing to the Jenike direct shear test; nevertheless, the results often exhibit lower rankings using the former method. This study aims to investigate the fundamental stress states within the test specimen that lead to this phenomenon, and to introduce a new uniform density specimen preparation method for a uniaxial compression test, in order to achieve comparative flow functions as for a Jenike direct shear test. The minimisation of the wall friction effect and achievement of the critical state when preparing a uniaxial specimen are explicitly discussed. Experimental investigations on flow functions of a suite of Australian iron ore samples were conducted using both the uniform density uniaxial compression test and the Jenike direct shear test. Results from both methods were found to be comparable, providing the specimen exhibits cohesive flow behaviours. THE flotation plant at Mount Lyell was erected, primarily, for the treatment of ore from the Lyell Comstock mine. These workings are situated over a mile in a direct line north of the North Mount Lyell mine, and are connected with the Reduction Work at Queenstown by a 2-ft. gauge steel tramway via the Queen River valley a distance of 7 miles. The property was purchased from the Mount Lyell Comstock Copper Co. After the disastrous fire in the North Mount Lyell mine in October, 1912, steps were immediately taken to make Lyell Comstock ore available for treatment, in order to relieve distress caused by any prolonged stoppage of work, and subsequently 13,032 tons of ore, averaging 3.38 %copper, 0.28 oz. silver, and 0.034 oz. gold; were smelted. When operations were resumed at the North Mount Lyell mine, it was evident that there was no economic advantage in smelting Lyell Comstock ore as compared with the higher value North Mount Lyell ore, which was also a better flux for the Mount Lyell pyrites, and that the future of the Lyell Comstock ore depended upon cheap mining and successful concentration of the ore. Therefore, extensive trenching and diamond-drilling was carried out, and a sufficiently large quantity of ore proved available for cheap extraction by open-cut methods. At the same time bulk tests by flotation were carried out at the Minerals Separation testing plant in Melbourne on different classes of ore from the Mount Lyell Comstock mine proper, followed by laboratory tests at Queenstown on all classes of ore available. Henderson Operation’s underground molybdenum mine has been in production since 1976. Since that historic date, more than one billion pounds of moly has been produced, and over 120 Mt of ore extracted from three different levels and many different panels. The safe and successful operation of Henderson has been, and will continue to be, dependent on utilising an increasingly sophisticated fleet of equipment, advanced designs, innovative mining techniques, best practices in maintenance processes, improvements in crushing and conveying systems, and most importantly, the training and mentoring of the underground staff. Conventional flotation technology has historically failed to achieve high recoveries when treating <15 µm particles (Lynch et al, 1981). The new StackCell™ flotation technology was developed to specifically target this particle size range, and was tested at pilot plant scale at Mt Keith Nickel Concentrator. The streams tested, Slimes Rougher Tailings and Fines/Slimes Cleaner Tailings, represent 21% and 11% of the total nickel lost to tailings in the plant. Laboratory scale test work indicated that an economically significant fraction of these losses was consistently available to be recovered by additional flotation. The pilot plant experimental scope included over 50 tests. A grade recovery curve for each stream was developed, as well as information on the effect of ore type, feed rate, wash water, air flow, collector and frother on the performance of the cell. The single StackCell was able to achieve nickel recoveries of 16.8% and 16.5% on the Rougher Tailings and Cleaner Tailings, respectively, at grades consistent with these blocks. Additional test work of the StackCell in a cleaner scalper duty yielded final quality concentrate with a maximum nickel recovery of 59.5% for the single stage StackCell. Laboratory scale simulation of the downstream impacts of the StackCell operating as a cleaner scalper indicated a net recovery benefit of up to 2.0% for this cleaner block.Tests were completed to compare residence time requirements of the StackCell, as compared to conventional flotation. In 55 seconds, the pilot plant StackCell achieved 50% of the recovery of a 960 second laboratory scale conventional flotation on the same feed material. The apparent improvement in flotation kinetics is attributed to the novel high intensity aeration system, which provides efficient bubble-particle contact thereby shortening the residence time required to achieve high recoveries. The smaller footprint and lower energy costs of such a cell are also benefits of this technology, which is being considered for industrial scale installation as a result of this test work. This paper presents recent advancements in the MillMapper software technology, developed and used for thickness gauging of liners of cylindrical grinding mills used for mineral comminution. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces with millimetre accuracy. The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and its numerous advantages over existing techniques and the value it adds to operations are presented. These are followed by discussion of recently-implemented innovations, including improved visualisation and inspection tools, automatic ball charge volume measurement and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement. Results from its application at several sites in Australia are presented throughout.

At Waiuta near Reefton there is a remarkable vein of quartz <1 m thick which, apart from small offsets on late-stage faults, is a sheet like body essentially continuous down-dip and along-strike for> 1 km. The vein strikes NNE and dips steeply west (032/78¦W). From 1906-1951 the Blackwater mine produced 740,404 ounces of gold from the vein, called the æBirthday ReefÆ, which was one third of the total production from Reefton Goldfield and the fourth largest gold mine in New Zealand. Within the mine the vein is disrupted into a series of northeast-plunging shoots by late-stage faults. Similar faults, but with larger displacements, were thought in the past to truncate the vein at the northern and southern ends of the mine. The implication of this fault dissection model is that offset remnants of the vein await discovery. This study investigated the geometry of the vein and its relationship to host-rock structures and late-stage faults. A new model considers folding and lithological variation in the host-rocks to be fundamental in controlling the scale and geometry of veining, but does not rule out the possibility of some late-stage fault dissection. The Birthday Reef truncates 200-400 m wavelength folds in Greenland Group host-rocks at c.10¦ angle, that results in variation in the structural properties of host-rocks along strike every ~1350-2500 m. The spacing of fold hinges in the wall-rock veins is equivalent to the strike length of historic mining, implying that the Birthday Reef is probably hosted in a single limb of a fold. Similar relationships between mineralisation and host-rock folds appear to be present elsewhere in the Reefton Goldfield (e.g. Capleston and Murray Creek group of mines). Exploration targets are located one fold wavelength (c.1350-2500 m) further along strike from the Blackwater mine and relatively barren rock is expected in between the mine and target areas. Refining the location of folds and different host rock lithologies, using geophysical data and quality geological mapping, is the key to reducing exploration risks and discovering further resources.

The ACARP Landmark initiative has created the opportunity to advance the level of automation in the coal industry by first focusing on the core production area of longwall mining. A Landmark Longwall Automation project was commenced in July 2001. The major outcome of automation using on-face observation has been divided into ten outcome areas that have been fully scoped for a three-year initial project life. A major facilitating technology has been the implementation inertial navigation system (INS) technology that can map the shearer position in 3D. A focus of the project is to deliver a system that is at least as productive as the current most productive manually controlled longwall face.

The Australian mining industry, a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, is on a journey towards greater equity and inclusion. Th paper introduces a comprehensive exploration of how universal design principles, stemming from architectural roots, have evolved through automation and digital technology into the more encompassing frameworks of inclusive design and equitable design. The paper proposes a practical framework for those involved in work, facilities and equipment design in the mining industry to identify and assess for equity and inclusion. Universal Design emerged in the 1960s with a primary focus on architecture, aiming to create spaces accessible to people of all abilities. Its foundational principles sought to ensure equitable use, flexibility, simplicity, perceptibility, tolerance for error, low physical effort and optimal spatial considerations. Over time, these principles evolved and expanded beyond physical spaces, finding applications in various fields, including technology, education and transportation. In response to advancements in technology and a growing understanding of the multifaceted nature of diversity, Universal Design evolved into Inclusive Design. Inclusive Design goes further than mere accessibility, considering a broader spectrum of users with varying cognitive, sensory, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. It emphasises user centred design, customisation options, diverse user research and continuous iteration. Equitable Design emerged as a framework that addresses not only the diversity of needs but also systemic disparities. It emphasises fairness, justice and the elimination of structural inequities. Equitable Design encompasses accessibility and affordability, representation and diversity, ethical considerations and community engagement. This paper will explore the applications of these design principles through a series of case studies including village and on-site facilities, remote operations and office based work design and technology design. By applying these frameworks in a mining context, the paper proposes that mining companies and suppliers can improve diversity, equity and inclusion leading to safer, more engaged and productive workplaces.

The Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is low angle, duplex thrust system that has developed in a graphitic pelite schist within the Otago schist belt, New Zealand . At Round Hill lateral ramps have developed parallel to the movement direction between+ the footwall and hangingwall shears. These structures exhibit normal oblique-slip displacement which has been an important mechanism for creating space in an otherwise compressional system. Gold-bearing quartz veins were emplaced along the boundary shears and lateral ramps during thrusting. Gold within the lateral ramps is coarse (up to 300 microns) however hanging wall cataclasite development in the boundary shears after the gold was deposited has reduced the grainzise of most of the gold to less than one micron. This bimodal gold distribution has metallurgical implications with respect to the maximisation of gold recovery at Macraes.

This paper examines the fire life systems implemented in two existing tunnels and discusses whether the standards used were appropriate. It focuses on the Terrace Tunnel as this upgrade and refurbishment is complete.The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) manages six tunnels on the State Highway network with two of these built in the last seven years. The Terrace Tunnel, opened in 1978, was refurbished with modern fire life safety systems in 2010–2012. An interim upgrade of the Mt Victoria Tunnel, opened in 1931, was also carried out at this time.In present times, few existing tunnels have undergone significant upgrades and refurbishments. The Terrace Tunnel required: new power supplies, control buildings, lighting, wall panels and jet fans, a deluge system, emergency exit lights and way-finding lights, a public address (PA) system, a radio rebroadcast system, lane control sign (LCS) and variable message sign (VMS), an over-height detection system (OHD) and a new tunnel management system.In the absence of suitable guidelines, various standards were used to carry out the refurbishment. The Austroad Guide to Road Tunnels and AS4825 Tunnel Fire Safety, although designed for new tunnels and not specifically intended for existing tunnels, provided a framework. A multi-criteria assessment of risk (MCAT) was carried out to determine the systems to be provided.The Terrace Tunnel has perhaps set a benchmark for refurbishing existing tunnels as few projects of this type have been completed recently. As more than a few mines gradually sink under the weight of emails, whiteboards, notice boards and ever more complex spreadsheets, the holy grail of effective short-term interval planning and control in underground mines is as far away as ever. Despite the mining industry investing ever greater amounts in planning and Enterprise Resource Planning systems, short-term plans become ever more complex and rigid. What the industry desperately needs are not more ‘disembodied voices down the speaking tubes’, but flexible and effective planning systems that encourage people to make reasonable commitments to each other so that everyone can work as a coordinated team to complete the work required each shift.One solution to the challenge has emerged. This paper describes the ‘Fewzion’ shift planning and short interval control system which has been developed at Anglo American’s Moranbah North and Glencore’s Oaky Creek coalmines in Central Queensland. Fewzion has drawn on management theory embodied in Management Operating Systems, Lean and Theory of Constraints approaches to continuous improvement to play a key role in both mines achieving record breaking tonnages.In addition to explaining the Fewzion approach, a case study is presented describing how Anglo American’s Moranbah North improved production by 39 per cent in 2014/2015 and won ‘Coalmine of the Year’ two out of the last four years and how Glencore’s Oaky Creek sustainably improved monthly development meters by 34 per cent within two months of implementing Fewzion.CITATION:Moynagh, P and Britton, G, 2017. Iron ore beneficiation plants are facing economic pressures to treat more challenging ore types, improve efficiency and improve product quality. Better control and stability of the plant process in the face of increasing feed ore variability has been a goal for many of the operations facing these challenges.Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) technology has proven to be a successful measurement technique within an iron ore beneficiation plant. PGNAA was first developed in the early 1980s for the measurement of the elemental composition of bulk materials. Today, PGNAA technology is applied for elemental analysis within the iron ore industry on both bulk materials and slurries.Traditional composite sampling throughout the wet iron ore beneficiation process provides a delayed measurement of average properties but does not capture the true variability of the process in real-time. As such this is a limiting factor towards stabilisation and optimisation of the process. A PGNAA analyser provides real-time slurry elemental analysis of feed, concentrate and tails streams within the processing plant. The analytical data from the analyser can be exploited with a control strategy to correct and stabilise the plant on a much shorter time scale, delivering significant economic benefits and greater operational flexibility. A procedure was required for the rapid determination of silicon in low-alloy irons and a suitable method used the formation and reduction of silicomolybdic acid at 50°C. The procedure gives results for elemental silicon and this enables the correct computation of oxidation requirements in basic oxygen steelmaking. The method could be useful in iron foundries which have not installed direct reading spectrometers.INTRODUCTIONOxygen steelmaking experiments required rapid determinations of 0,5-1,6 per cent silicon in iron (3-4 per cent C) within 10 min of sampling; a reproducibility better than ±0.03 per cent Si was desired. Only elemental silicon (Si°) is of interest as a fuel in basic oxygen steelmaking technology, and the proposed procedure determines exclusively this form of silicon. The method is described as it may prove useful to other workers although the interference study would be incomplete for some applications.The analysis of silicon in iron is frequently obtained using direct reading spectrometers, but for the proposed experiments the spectrometers could not be used because of the prohibitive distance from the furnace. It should be noted that spectrometers determine both the elemental silicon and that present as silicon dioxide in occluded slag and inclusions.The silicon content of iron and steel is determined in this laboratory by spectrophotometric measurement of a "molybdenum blue" colour.
