Electrorefining of low-grade copper alloys containing various amounts of nickel, lead, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, selenium, silver, and gold in sulfamic acid media was demonstrated. The copper concentration of the alloys used as an anode was 70–90 wt%. The electrolyte contained 100 g L-1 of free sulfamic acid and 40 g L-1 of cupric ion. Galvanostatic electrolysis was conducted at 200–300 A m-2 in the electrolyte using a low-grade copper alloy anode and a stainless steel cathode at 25C. The terminal voltage was approximately 0.8 V at the start of the electrolysis, although it increased periodically to approximately 2.0 V and then shortly returned to its initial value. Nickel, lead, and arsenic from the anode dissolved in the electrolyte and were removed. Antimony, bismuth, selenium, and silver were removed as solids. Consequently, a dense copper cathode was obtained, and the concentration of copper was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry to be 99.82–99.99 wt%. INTRODUCTION Electrorefining of copper is conventionally carried out in a sulfuric acid electrolyte using crude copper assaying at 99.5 wt% Cu as the anode (Biswas & Davenport, 1994). Elements more noble than copper do not react anodically, and consequently, they are distributed in anode slimes. Elements less noble than copper dissolve from the anode. Nickel and arsenic are stabilized as aqueous species. Lead, antimony, and bismuth react with water, sulfuric acid, or arsenic acid to form barely soluble compounds; thus, they are distributed in anode slimes. An emerging issue in the electrolytic refining of copper is an increase of impurities in crude copper used as the anode (Moats et al., 2013). This is due to an increase in the content of impurities in copper concentrates as well as an increase in the types of secondary copper feedstocks (e.g., E-Scraps, automotive shredder residues, and smelting residues) treated in the copper pyrometallurgical process. An extreme case is a copper smelter that does not use copper concentrates as feedstocks. In such a process, copper-bearing feedstocks are smelted in a top submerged lance furnace to prepare low-grade copper alloys assaying at 80– 90 wt% Cu (Sekimoto et al., 2013). Such low-grade copper is not acceptable as an anode in the conventional copper electrolytic refining process because it is easily passivated during electrolysis. Consequently, electrolytic copper is produced by leaching the atomized low-grade copper in a sulfuric acid solution with oxygen, followed by electrowinning. However, electrowinning should be avoided whenever possible because the electrical energy consumed in electrowinning is 5–10 times higher than that consumed in electrorefining. Copper occurs invisibly in a geo-logical environment characterized by swampy conditions and an accumulation of forest peat. This swamp, located in southeastern New Brunswick, contains up to ten per cent cop-per (dry weight), in the organic sediments. This occurrence appears unique in that the metal is apparently organically combined in a chelate compound. Unlike the acidic nature of most peat bogs, the pH of the cup-riferous peat is nearly neutral. Analyses of the peat and associated soils have indicated that the bulk of the copper is contained in the organic sediments. It appears that the cop-per distribution is affected by capillarity, evaporation and the growth of frost crystals, and that the copper fixation is effected by organic sequestration resulting in the metal being bound to the nitrogen or oxygen components of the forest peat. While such a fixation mechanism is not definitely established as responsible for the immobilization of the metal, the facts at hand are compatible with

Acid rock drainage (ARD) is one of the most serious and potentially enduring environmental problems of the mining industry. High liability costs carried by many mining companies to cover potential obligations of ARD are a clear indication of the gravity of the problem. Unchecked, ARD can result in water quality impacts that could well be the industry's most significant financial and credibility risk. Effectively preventing acid drainage is a formidable challenge that requires the total commitment of the mining industry throughout the entire life-cycle of a mine. To achieve this commitment a strong business case for ARD prevention must be developed. This paper will address the elements of acid prevention and discuss their importance not only to the company but the entire industry as well. The International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) is an industry-led group created to help meet this challenge. In 2009, INAP published the GARD Guide (www.gardguide.com), a web-base best practices guide for the prevention of ARD [1]. In this paper, the GARD Guide will be used to identify preventative actions for all mining industry stakeholders. It will, in turn, be used to estimate ARD management and mitigation value accrued to the company from ARD prevention, which will be used in developing a business case for acid prevention.

In 2004, Rio Tinto started a major project to implement Mine Monitoring and Control (MMC) systems worldwide. A detailed selection processes was undertaken and migration to a standard system was started. Today systems are operating around the world and serve as the core of to many business processes. Implementations include highly union areas, large mines, centrally managed mines, and remote areas. Each implementation has unique challenges but all are working towards the common goal with common systems. This paper reviews two projects that Rio Tinto has deployed in diverse conditions. The projects are the Rossing Uranium upgrade from the original Wenco system to the common standard and Iron Ore of Canada?s general technology upgrade. Also discussed is the future of mining at Rio Tinto, specifically the drill automation projects, and how it is utilizing the common standard MMC systems.

"Introduction1N THE FALL of 1951, Peace River Allied Fort St. John No. 1 well was drilled in Lsd. 1, Section 9 Township 83, Range 18, West of the 6th Meridian, on the flats of the north side of Peace river, six miles southeast of the village of Fort St. John, B.C. During this operation, non-commercial shows gas in three zones and of oil in one zone were obtained during the drill-stem tests. Further geological study indicated that this well was on the southeastern edge of the Fort St. St. John structure.Pacific Fort St. John No. 4, drilled shortly afterwards, obtained possible commercial gas flows on drill-stem test in five zones and thus encouraged development of what has become Canada's largest multizone gas field.In general, the productive horizons in this area possess fair per-meabilities and high porosities, a combination which provides for high reserves and moderate productivities. Development to date has therefore stressed experimental techniques in drilling and completion practice to provide high deliverability wells.Data and information of a specific nature apply, in all cases, to the pools in the Fort St. John structure."

When underground extractions occur beneath or in close proximity to valleys and other forms of irregular surface topographic features, the observed vertical subsidence at the base of the valley is less than that would be expected in flat terrain, while the valley sides are observed to move inwards towards the centre of the valley. The reduction in subsidence at the bottom of the valley is referred to as upsidence and the convergence of two sides of the valley is termed valley closure. Research coupled with mining experience over the past few decades in Australia has identified valley closure subsidence as being very real and quite significant part of non-conventional subsidence effects, which always have adverse effects on natural features, with risks to water flow and aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, we describe a threedimensional numerical modelling approach to investigate the geomechanical mechanisms which cause the valley closure subsidence behaviour, using distinct element computer package 3DEC. The calibrated models can accurately predict subsidence and horizontal displacements, and they are subsequently extended to specifically study the effect of a series of mining geological and topographical factors on valley closure subsidence phenomenon, by developing a range of hypothetical scenarios. Previous analyses carried out using a two-dimensional numerical modelling technique have identified the potential parameters that affect the valley closure subsidence, which mainly include longwall position, horizontal stresses, valley sloping angle, and valley shape. Further three-dimensional analyses regarding the relationships between the major factors and valley closure subsidence are discussed in this paper. The results have significant implications with regard to both the underlying mechanisms that lead to this nonconventional subsidence behaviour, and how these should be incorporated in future valley closure subsidence prediction and mitigation of its impacts on natural features.

Aluminum sheet use has been steadily increasing in the automotive industry to achieve mass reduction and improve fuel economy. One significant manufacturing challenge for aluminum sheet implementation is the reduced formability compared to the steel alloys it replaces. This paper includes friction results from the draw bead simulator (DBS), twist compression (TCT) and strip draw (SDT) tests, for two oil based lubricants and four hot melt lubricants. Formability testing was done with the same lubricants and materials, testing in pure stretch with a hemispherical punch, and in draw with a breadpan shaped die.

The paper industry in the Pacific Northwest is a potentially large market for industrial clays. Current trends within the paper industry towards higher quality newsprint, filled and coated papers, offers an incentive for exploration in the region since the current supply of kaolin is mainly from Georgia in the southeastern U.S. Freight rates commonly exceed US$100 per tonne. The kaolin resources of the Pacific Northwest require expensive processing technologies to meet the industry specifications and it is doubtful that any large development of the local resources can be supported at the present time. Competition from high-quality regional resources of carbonates is another factor weighing against the development of local kaolin resources while there is a potential threat from shipments ofAsian and Brazilian kaolin in the early part of the 21st century.

"The Weyburn Oil Field, located 80 miles southeast of Regina, Saskatchewan, was discovered by Central-Del Rio Oils Limited, in January, 1955. As of January 1st, 1959, the field had 357 wells capable of producing an estimated total of 45,100 barrels of oil per day.Highly portable, economical, drilling rigs are used to penetrate the pay at a depth of 4,400 to 5,100 feet. Presently, the complete drilling operation for an average field well, including drilling, coring, testing, and running casing, requires 12 days. Drilling procedures are conventional for a field of this depth and no serious problems exist. Central-Del Rio core the productive section of all their wells, which provides valuable information for well completions and reservoir studies. Production casing procedure is to set through the zone and perforate the productive inter-val. This was found advisable due to the lensing nature of the porosity and permeability throughout the reservoir, and to the high connate water saturation encountered in the tighter sections of the reservoir in the north and northeast areas of the field.Although a few wells in the field have produced naturally by flowing or pumping without acid treatment, it has generally been necessary to acidize the wells to make them commercial producers. To date, acid treatments appear to effect better stimulation of the limestone reservoir than fracturing treatments. Perforation sealing balls have been used as an aid in selectively treating all of the perforated interval.The majority of the field is on pump, producing at a low gas-oil ratio. The main part of the field has water-free production, with most of the water being produced in the north and northeastern area. Salt-water disposal is now available in the field through two disposal wells completed in the Basal Blairmore sand.The Midale Beds ""Marly"" and ""Vuggy"" zones form the principal reservoir, which is a stratigraphic trap, with the north and northeast edges terminated by a porosity and permeability pinch-out and the south-west and west edges bounded by water-laden porosity. There is no evidence to date of a gas cap. The reservoir apparently is producing on a fluid-expansion-type mechanism. The increasing water production in wells on the southwest and west edges of the field indicated water encroachment from these directions, and suggests some recovery energy may be available from this source.The total probable ultimate remaining recoverable reserves have been estimated at° 332,469,000 barrels of oil. Markets have not been able to keep up with the rate of development of the medium crude re-serves. However, it is felt strongly that substantial additional markets for Weyburn medium crude will be developed by the producers in the near future at realistic wellhead prices."

This paper describes the progress accomplished at the Noranda Technology Centre in the field of three-dimensional computer-aided underground blast design. Traditional methods of laying out underground blasts are reviewed, and the new computer-aided approach is described. Time savings achieved through the use of BLASTCAD can be advantageously used to better engineer blasts, using models and blast vibration analysis. Future work involving the attachment of blast models directly to the system is also addressed.

Introduction The principal primary iron and steel producing capacity of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation is at the Dominion Iron and Steel, Limited, plant at Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The main raw materials are Cape Breton coal, Wabana (Newfoundland) iron ore, and Port-au-Port (Newfoundland) limestone. This plant, which was established at the turn of the century has gradually expanded its production facilities so that today its ingot producing capacity is over 720,000 tons annually. Principal operating units of the plant at present are three batteries of 173 Koppers by-product coke ovens with conventional by-product recovery equipment, three blast furnaces .of 15 ft. 6 in., 18 ft. 3 in., and 19 ft. 3 in. hearth diameter (inside the brick), one 700-ton hot metal mixer, ten open hearth furnaces (two of 175-ton capacity, three 12 5-ton, five 60-ton), one 10-ton electric furnace, a 40-inch blooming mill, a billet mill, a rail mill, a tie plate mill, rod and bar mills, and a wire and nail mill. Extensive machine shops and an iron and brass foundry are also available for plant maintenance and repairs. This paper will describe developments during the past five years and those now in process. It will also briefly discuss research being done and indicate the direction of future development.

During 1958, prospecting parties working for the Mackenzie Syndicate in the Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories, identified tungsten mineralization and located the property now being developed by the Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. Scheelite mineralization, associated with pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite, occurs in lime silicate skarn replacement zones within a limestone-chert-argillite series intruded by granitic dykes originating from the ? main batholithic mass underlying the sedimentary beds. The results of surface outcrop sampling and 15,000 feet of grid-pattern diamond drilling have been combined to outline an orebody estimated to contain 1.32 million tons, grading 2.51 per cent WO after applying a 10 per cent dilution factor for mining purposes. T HE property of Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. is located in the upper Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories. Skarn-type replacement deposits containing scheelite mineralization are .situated between elevations of 4,500 and 5,500 feet above sea level along the east flank of the mountain range forming the boundary between the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories. The nearest supply center for the area is Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, located at Milepost 635 on the Alaska Highway.

"Although there have been great steps forward to integrate corrosion engineering into operations, there is still an underlying tendency for maintenance tasks to be performed in a reactive manner. This is especially true when strategies focus on lagging indicators such as visual inspections, RCA (root-cause analysis), and FMECA (failure mode, effects and criticality analysis). This trend to “reactive maintenance” can be avoided by utilizing more inspection and monitoring methods to identify leading indicators of failures. Prevention is generally less costly than repairs; moreover, when paired with appropriate monitoring techniques, intervention of corrosion protection can be more effectively timed and based on more accurate data. Hatch asset reliability studies show nearly 80% of defects are introduced through operations and maintenance. Therefore, proactive corrosion management can provide the necessary feedback to optimize operations and maintenance strategies preventing costly corrosion losses. Understanding corrosion risks gives a clear picture of the benefits of a proactive approach to asset performance. Monitoring techniques (Non-Destructive Testing, field testing, sampling, etc.) by nature are a more effective means of improving maintenance efforts and preventing corrosion losses than other methods (RCA, FMECA). This paper will outline the importance of proactive corrosion management and demonstrate its benefits through industry examples.INTRODUCTION Over the past few decades, with the growth of technology and awareness of sustainable development many studies have shown the benefits of a proactive approach to maintenance strategies. "In the presence of sulfidic refractory ores, increasing the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration can positively affect the gold leaching rate. To identify the role of DO in gold cyanidation, electrochemical behavior was studied in the presence of 3 different ores. Sample 1 was a low sulfide pyrite ore, contained 5.14% pyrite, 0.19% galena and 3.09% S. Sample 2 was a pyriticore as well, contained more sulfide as 8.35% S, and 12.4% of pyrite. Sample 3 was a tailing of silicate gold ore, still containing75 g/tAu, 0.13% Pb and 0.18% S. Gold cyanidation kinetics were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry tests. With sample 1, the gold oxidation peak current density from CV curve was increased to 1.38mA/cm2under oxygen injection, while it was only 0.66 mA/cm2with air injection. From chronoamperometry test, the reaction rate was also faster under oxygen injection. Sample 2 showed similar behavior with sample 1, but the gold oxidation peaks higher than sample 1, i.e. 1.75 and 2.27 mA/cm2, under air and oxygen injection, respectively. However, it seemed that the gold oxidation was impeded by sulfide ions for a longer period. In the presence of sample 3, the gold oxidation peak was the highest among three ores –2.75mA/cm2under oxygen injection, because of its lowest sulfide content. However, from chronoamperometry test, it was also shown that the gold oxidation was impeded because of a significant amount of Pb in the ore sample.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that gold is leached under oxidative condition (Marsden &House, 2006). Through the most representative and oldest gold leaching technique, cyanidation, more than 90% of gold can be selectively leached from an ore. According to Elsner’s equation, gold is leached in cyanide solution by forming cyanide complex [Au (CN)2–], and oxygen is consumed as an oxidant(Eq. 1)."

Introduction Some interest is being shown in Canada in underground gasification of coal and, as developments have now taken place in several countries of the world, it is thought that a review of progress, particularly from the viewpoint of a mining engineer, may be of interest. The literature on the subject, and notably that of Russian origin, is already very voluminous. The various methods of underground gasification of coal have evolved from initial attempts to employ underground workings as gasifiers of previously fragmented coal or to use some method that involves little or no preparatory work underground. The 'stream' method, shown schematically in Figure 1, has been the only one used in tests to date in countries outside the U.S.S.R. Other methods, involving preparatory work underground prior to gasification, are the early 'chamber' method, where fragmented coal was gasified in rooms between inlet and outlet entries, and the underground borehole' method, illustrated in Figure 2, where gasification is developed in a succession of boreholes which are temporarily sealed and then abandoned in turn after gasification. The stream method appears. to be particularly suitable for pitching seems as it is claimed that the pitch prevents ash accumulation or serious blockage from roof falls, and it also aids the circulation of the stream. As a considerable proportion of Canadian medium and high-rank coal seams are inclined, it would seem that, at least at the outset, the stream method or a modification thereof would be the one most applicable to all but the Saskatchewan lignite fields and the flat domestic-coal fields of Alberta.

Environmentally assisted cracks in linepipe steels are initiated either as a result of stresses in combination with environmental effects, as in stress corrosion cracking (SCC), or as a result of trapped hydrogen in the steel, as in hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). To understand better the mechanism of the crack initiation process, key metallurgical and environmental elements that can affect the cracking phenomena were investigated and are reviewed in this paper. The complexity of both cracking phenomena results from the dependence of SCC and HIC on multiple metallurgical, mechanical, and environmental parameters that may all influence both crack initiation and propagation; e.g., composition, microstructure and non-metallic inclusions in the steel, applied stress, water chemistry in the field, and ionic concentrations in the groundwater near the pipe surface to name a few for SCC. In addition, for HIC phenomena, one can add the concentration of H2S in the fluids transported in the pipe as well as concentration of CO2, pH, etc. In this paper, cracking of linepipe steels is analyzed critically, with particular attention to the crack initiation process. The paper is divided into two parts: The first part covers SCC and the second covers HIC.

Direct chill (DC) cast ingot plates of 2xxx alloys have been increasingly used for large mold applications in the plastics and automotive industries. A novel heat treatment practice for Al-3%Cu-1%Mg DC cast ingot plates has been developed, involving solution treatment, furnace cooling to the desired aging temperature and holding for appropriate time at the aging temperature. The mechanical properties of the plates were studied for different combinations of aging temperature and time, using hardness measurements and tensile testing. The evolution of the strengthening precipitates was investigated under different cooling rates corresponding to cold water quenching, still-air cooling and furnace cooling, using electrical conductivity measurements. The results showed that by applying the novel heat treatment, the cast ingot plates could provide a wide range of combinations of strength and ductility satisfying the design specifications of large molds. This, in turn, offers a practical solution for the fabrication of extremely large DC cast plates combining between good mechanical properties and low levels of residual stress using the shortest possible heat treating cycle.

"Survival in today's business climate requires participation of all employees in a Total Quality Management Program encompassing everything - ""safety, quality of products, quality ofet1ch and every job done, and of course production "". We all know what needs to be accomplished, but struggle with how to do it, especially in an industry which has not always experienced management/union cooperation, and mistrust is still present.This paper describes a process to improve team work and employee involvement in Inco's nickel carbonyl refinery at Copper Cliff The process involves facilitatorship training for all employees, and a system for reinforcing and accomplishing the required behavioural change. The system is described in detail and a number of examples are presented. At the refinery, the staff is starting to understand as Max DePree recently wrote ""Without Quality Behaviour, you cannot have Quality Product"". IntroductionThe Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery (CCNR) is Inco's largest and most modern nickel refinery, which celebrated its twentieth year of successful operation in April 1993.The heart of the refinery is the Inco pressure carbonyl (IPq plant which produces high purity nickel pellets and specialty powders by refining an approximate 80% nickel granule feed. The carbonyl plant is a modem chemical plant with very special and demanding requirements for safety and environmental protection due to the toxic nature of the refining gas.Since 1987, there has been an emphasis at CCNR on a comprehensive Total Quality Improvement (TQI) Program which was designed based on recognizing customers' needs for improved systems for quality management. This program is customer oriented and comprises such elements as team organizational concepts, customer audits, process assessment and internal quality auditing.A detailed review of progress was made in early 1991 and it became apparent that the ""ownership"" of the TQI program was not broad based. In fact, the program was very much a staff driven effort and fell far short of total employee involvement and relentless continuous improvement that are now considered essential to remain competitive and stay in business.Inco staff has now come to regard that early phase of our TQI program as ""the technical aspects of total quality improvement"".The safety experience was also puzzling. Even though the safety statistics were good with an average lost time frequency of 1.6 for the last five years, the perfonnance improvement had plateaued and remained pretty much the same. Clearly a new approach was required if significant progress and continuous improvement was to be made."

"To obtain large-sized billets with fine grains and homogeneous elements distribution, uniform direct chill (UDC) casting process, based on annular electromagnetic stirring coupling with intercooling, was employed to produce 7055 alloy billets with a size of F584 mm in this study. The results indicated that there were the coupled effects of annular electromagnetic stirring and intercooling on grain refinement and element homogenization, and also the billets produced by the UDC casting process showed excellent hot workability in comparison to the normal direct chill casting process.INTRODUCTION The high solute 7055 aluminium alloy has a wonderful combination of high specific strength and hardness, good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and high fracture toughness, which is very useful in aerospace application (Yan et al., 2013; Mondal & Mukhopadhyay, 2005). The production of large-sized 7055 alloy billets with high quality is the basic condition for the subsequent application of 7055 alloy to the aircraft. Inhomogeneous microstructures and performances of 7055 billets result from the high alloying element content and the inhomogeneous cooling condition in different regions of billets during the conventional direct chill casting (Paramatmuni et al., 2004; Lalpoor et al., 2011), which will bring bad influence to processing property, functional performance and utilization rate of materials. To alleviate segregation and obtain fine and uniform grains, some effective treatment methods were proposed including electromagnetic stirring (EMS) (Vives, 1989), ultrasonic vibrating (Zhang et al., 2011) and melt conditioning (Fan et al., 2013), on the melt to obtain fine and uniform grains. However, these methods could not effectively decrease the large temperature difference between central and periphery parts of the billet, because the solidification mainly depends on outside cooling including mould cooling and water spraying cooling. To change the heat extraction pattern of the billet functioned solely from the outer surface, based on annular electromagnetic stirring (A-EMS) invented by Xu et al. (2010), Luo et al. (2017) proposed uniform direct chill (UDC) casting coupling A-EMS with intercooling in the direct chill (DC) casting process. An in-mold cooler was inserted to the melt sump, and thus the alloy melt temperature and concentration at solidification front become more uniform."
