"Production from Canada's first diamond mine is planned for the last quarter of 1998. The climatic conditions and the variation in kimberlite types to be treated have lead to the development of a compact and flexible processing plant.High kimberlite moisture contents and winter temperatures below -40°C have dictated a process flowsheet with limited in-circuit storage to reduce materials handling difficulties. The latest developments in High Pressure Grinding Roll technology will be used to liberate the valuable diamond, reduce diamond breakage, and increase fines production to reduce the amount of material for down stream processing in the Heavy Medium Separation section.A varying heavy mineral concentrate yield has lead to the development of a final Recovery section that will incorporate Attrition Milling and Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation for concentrate reduction. The latest developments in diamond X-ray sorting will be used to produce a final diamond concentrate for mechanical sizing, weighing and packing.Fine tailings thickening will utilise Deep Bed Compression type thickeners. This relatively new technology can produce;i) high underflow densities at low flocculant dosage rates, andii) clear overflowswith a smaller thickening area than conventional high-rate thickeners."

In the last four years, Compañia Minera Doña Ines de Collahuasi has been working in the application of advanced multivariate statistical techniques for the improvement of the metallurgical processes. In this paper the main conclusions for the application of multivariable analysis to the EW process are presented; including the identification of (target) process patterns according to throughput and quality criteria. Based on the process patterns, process variables hierarchies were identified by selecting the most influential ones, as well as to identify and isolate the root causes of pattern deviations and sub-standard operating conditions, cause-effect relationships were established, leading to the definition of process policies and controls to give early corrections to potential failures. The analysis was focused on cathode quality, specifically in its sulfur content, using an empirical model based on those variables that from a phenomenological and statistical stand point appeared to be the most influencing ones.

"Analyses of production logs of multiply fractured horizontal wells in unconventional plays show that only a small percent (~30%) of perforation clusters contribute to production. We present in this paper one possible approach to mitigating this problem, based on use of a fully 3-D numerical model of fracture propagation through a heterogeneous medium, by studying the influence both of spacing and of perforation friction on the initiation and propagation of simultaneous hydraulic fractures from a horizontal wellbore. The results indicate that while limited-entry perforating can help to equalize the lengths of fractures simultaneously growing from multiple clusters, it cannot equalize their widths. Both fracture width and fracture length can be equilibrated by combining non-even cluster spacing with limited-entry perforating. This has obvious benefits as it allows equalized placement of proppant across the entire series of perforation clusters, resulting in similar fracture widths and conductivities which enhances the likelihood that all clusters will contribute equally to production.INTRODUCTIONThere is substantial evidence from production logs and other information that during the hydraulic stimulation of horizontal wells, not all perforation clusters within a given stage will produce. One possible cause is the interaction between the hydraulic fractures emanating from each perforation cluster. Typically fractures created at the outer perforation clusters create “stress shadows”, i.e. increases in compressive stress in the minimum principal stress direction, which limit the growth of fractures growing from interior clusters; this is confirmed by modelling [1, 2, 3]. An example of this can be seen in Figure 1 which shows the final configuration of simultaneously propagating fractures from multiple, evenly spaced clusters when there is no perforation friction. The inner fractures are substantially shorter, reproducing the results by Bunger and Peirce [3]. The inner fractures also have substantially smaller widths.One approach to equalize the growth of simultaneously propagating fractures from a horizontal wellbore is by using limited-entry perforating as a method to equilibrate the flow rates into each of the different perforation clusters. Perforation friction is caused by the finite diameter of the entry points into the formation, and leads to a pressure drop across each perforation which is proportional to the flow rate squared. Fractures that take more fluid have a higher fluid velocity through the perforations than fractures receiving less fluid. This causes a larger pressure drop between the wellbore and more rapidly growing fractures, compared to the same pressure drop between the wellbore and the fractures that grow more slowly. Because pressure within the wellbore is approximately the same at each entry point, the larger pressure drop leads to less pressure being delivered to rapidly growing fractures, thereby decreasing their ability to propagate and reducing the amount of fluid they are able to receive. Because the mass rate of injection into the wellbore is constant, this forces more fluid into the fractures that were propagating more slowly, increasing their growth rate. It also increases the pressure required to drive fluid injection. The balance of these effects makes the system largely self-regulating and delivers more balanced fracture growth. While this effect is well known, it is often neglected in current numerical models."

"The Nechalacho deposit, located in the Northwest Territories, Canada, is a heavy rare earth element (REE) deposit. The main REE-bearing minerals in the deposit are zircon, allanite, bastnäsite, synchysite, columbite (Fe) and fergusonite. Previous work investigated the use of gravity and magnetic separation in the processing of this ore and showed that coarse particles following grinding were enriched in zircon, suggesting the potential for selective comminution. The current work investigates the possibility to selectively comminute gangue minerals and concentrate REE-bearing zircon into coarser size fractions. The ore was ground wet in a laboratory rod mill for various lengths of time (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 min). The resultant products were analyzed using ICP-MS, to determine the distribution of zirconium and REEs in the different size fractions produced after grinding, and QEMSCAN, to identify mineral phases, mineral liberation and the distribution of minerals. Optimum grind sizes for the upgrading of zircon due to selective comminution were then proposed, and dense medium separation was investigated as a means to further concentrate zircon.It is important to note that this process is not representative of the currently selected process design or recovery for the Nechalacho deposit. Any application of this process to this deposit would require optimization in order to ensure appropriate grade and recovery targets are met.INTRODUCTIONThe rare earth elements (REEs) are the fifteen elements in the lanthanide series of the Periodic Table, as well as yttrium (scandium is excluded in this work). Traditionally, REEs are categorized into two groups: the cerium sub-group of “light” rare earth elements (LREEs); and the yttrium sub-group of “heavy” rare earth elements (HREEs) (Golev et al., 2014). The LREEs comprise the first six lanthanides (lanthanum through samarium) and the HREEs comprise the remaining nine lanthanide elements (europium through lutetium) coupled with yttrium (Golev et al., 2014). HREEs are much less abundant in the earth’s crust and on average are more expensive than LREEs (Seredin, 2010). Of the fifteen REEs, the production of neodymium, europium, terbium, dysprosium and yttrium has been determined to be most critical due to their scarcity, high demand and criticality in many high-technology and clean energy applications, such as in illuminated screens for electronic devices and permanent magnets in wind turbines (Seredin, 2010; U.S. Department of Energy, 2011). These five elements are classified as critical rare earth elements (CREEs) (U.S. Department of Energy, 2011)."

METAL PRICES RISE WITHIN the past nine months, the mining industry of the world has been revivified by a spectacular price advance for the metals. ln fact, practically all geological raw materials have been marked up during this period. Reviving industry started the price rise, but the armaments race among the nations has intensified it. These factors, coupled with our decided building shortage, which must be made up, will probably maintain metal prices at decidedly favourable levels over the next two or three years, or longer. OUR MINERAL CIVILIZATION It is interesting to recall that in the past hundred years, while the white population of the world increased some three ta three and a half fold, the consumption of minerals increased seventy-five fold. In other words, ours is a mineral civilization. If we disregard short slumps, which we will occasionally experience, it seems certain that the bread upward trend in mineral consumption will be maintained for many decades into the future. Nations without reasonably abundant and diverse mineral deposits will eventually become nations without much power. Canada is blessed with a splendid store of minerals. Its mineral industry is now facing an exceptionally rosy future. What of the mineral industry of Nova Scotia? GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH ALLOWED TO LAG RN NOVA SCONA Many years ago, when geological science was in? its infancy, much geological study was carried on in Nova Scotia. In 1827, Francis Alger began work on the iron ores in the Bay of Fundy region. In 1886, E. R. Faribault began his series of remarkable papers on Nova Scotia geology. Between these dates, many others published papers on the geology of the Province. The most outstanding of this early group of geologists was Sir William Dawson, whose published works on Nova Scotian geology extended over the period from 1845 to 1891.

A four-year study was carried out to determine the ability of coniferous trees to aid in the reclamation of uranium tailings at Elliot Lake. Five species were planted: white cedar, white spruce, jack pine, scotch pine and red pine. More than 570 bare-root, two-year-old seedlings were planted on bare tailings and in areas of established grasses. A further division was made between areas of coarse and fine tailings. Over-all survival and growth of the trees has been far below expectations based on previous experience with several varieties of grasses. The criteria for assessment have been per cent survival and yearly growth as determined by plant height. Pine was superior, with 68% survival when planted in bare coarse tailings, 45% for vegetated coarse tailings and 34% for vegetated fine tailings. Cedar had the worst survival rates at 49%, 14% and 7% respectively. No species survived on bare fine tailings. The survival and growth of the coniferous trees have been related to species, environmental conditions and tailings properties.

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. Introduction I N THE fall months of l 961. the system of feeding the lead blast furnaces at the Trail, B.C., smelter of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited was altered from the tradition-al narrow-gauge railway and V-car method to one employing mono-rail carriers. Sindesar Khurd Mine is situated in Rajasthan, India, and operated by Hindustan Zinc Ltd, under Vedanta Group. The base metal mine is high in reserves of Lead, Zinc and silver and has been producing since 2007 with initial production of 0.3 mtpa. Recently the mine has gained prominence as a base metal underground mine in introduction of latest mining techniques and achieving high production at lowest costs. The promising Lead-Zinc reserves of Sindesar Khurd Mine (SKM) and high-tech exploration adopted by Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), (Vedanta Group), raising the reserves and resources from a meager 9 Mt (1997) to 81 Mt (2012), has prompted HZL management to ramp up the mine production from 0.3 mtpa (2006-07) to 2 mtpa by 2013-14 with ambitious plans to reach 3.5mtpa subsequently (presently largest underground metal mine in India). The complete trackless system underground mine, recently equipped with latest leaky feeder communication system (unique in India), utilize modern drilling, mucking and hauling equipment aided with various utility/service vehicles. Excavation optimization and quality recovery maximization from the open and post filled stoping methods, continual expert analysis and feedback from International consultants like AMC (Australia) and SRK (UK), and involvement of renowned bodies in management excellence, have lead the mine towards highest productivity and lowest mine operating cost, earning the mine a prominent place in the global base metal industry. The paper deals with how the various challenges in mine planning and designing, mine development, operator skill, equipment introduction and maintenance, expertise availability, provide training and exposure to officials, prompt and effective communication/service, control of ground vibrations, maintain ventilation standards etc are faced in attaining high operational excellence and thus attain a record mine output/man shift (OMS) of 14 ton/man shift with targets to reach 20 ton/man /shift. Scientific designing using 2D/3D numerical mine-modeling techniques, faster stope sequencing with introduction of paste filling ( first time in India),latest leaky feeder communication system, control ground vibration to stringent standards using electronic delay system, faster raising techniques using raise borers to enhance development and ventilation, cavity scanners to monitor large stope voids, fast shaft sinking at 100 m/month(Chinese expertise) and maintaining adequate ventilation with close software monitoring are some of the highlights discussed in the paper towards achieving the targets.

During 1955, Cominco commenced an exploration pro-gram in northern New Brunswick; in the following year, what is now the Wedge mine was discovered. The mineralization is mainly pyrite, with associated chalcopyrite and minor amounts of sphalerite and galena. The property was brought into production at 750 tons per day in early 1962. The ore is trucked 10 miles to the Heath Steele concentrator, where a copper concentrate grading about 19.5 per cent is produced and shipped to the Japanese markets through the port of Dalhousie, New Brunswick. Introduction THE Wedge mine, owned by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited (Cominco), is located in the Newcastle-Bathurst area of New Brunswick. It is 42 miles by road northwest of Newcastle and 37 miles southwest of Bathurst (Figure 1). The mine is located on the north side of the Nipisiquit river in one of the more mountainous areas of the Province, the local relief rising to 1,500 feet above sea level. There is an almost complete forest cover of mixed hardwoods and conifers -the val-leys and hillsides being covered by balsam, spruce and pine, the swamps by cedars and black spruce and the highlands by mixed hardwoods.

"The measurement and evaluation of the noise emanating from an ST4A scooptram in an underground stope under a simulated work cycle, and under three conditions of after-treatment systems is covered.These include scooptram without muffler or filler (bare engine), an in-line small filter, compared to a larger-filter, and the larger filter with an in-line muffler in series with fume diluter, which were tested under three engine operating conditions-IDLE, wide open throttle (W. 0. T.), and working condition. This is load, short haul and dump operation.The results showed an attenuation of the scooptram at work of 8 to 15 dBA, 16 cm from the exhaust pipe of the machine, to 4.8 dBA at the operator's ear. Recommendations are made to increase the attenuation at the operator 's ear by additional improvement in design of the fume diluter.IntroductionIn current mining operations, the diesel engine provides a safe, efficient and highly mobile source of power. In the major underground mine s in Canada the most common types of diesel equipment are load-haul-dump (LHD) machines and ore trucks. In general, there is a tendency to use high horsepower, diesel LHD machines in mines to achieve maximum productivity. The increased use of diesel-powered equipment in underground mines has shown no cause pressure levels were measured at the exhaust and outlet pipe. Also, while measuring the octave band and A-weighted sound pressure levels, the operator's position was also measured."

"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. A similar shift is observed in the transition from rocks to stream sediments and to lake sediments in the Beaverlodge district.Results of a Rn-Ra-U survey of lake bottoms in the Key Lake district show that anomalous hydromorphic U from U mineralization is parallelled by anomalous Rn, even though there is much less Ra in the lake-bottom sediments than one would expect from the amount of U present. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb. This mobilized U is adsorbed on sediments in streams and lakes, or enters groundwaters, where it is eventually precipitated under reducing conditions, occasionally in oregrade concentrations. "The Powell mine is in western Quebec about 2 miles northwest of the adjoining towns of Noranda and Rouyn. It is the original discovery of the area, its gold-bearing quartz vein having been discovered in 1922. Considerable work was done on this vein by several companies and discontinued because the grade, when gold was $20 an ounce, was too low for profitable extraction. Between 1922 and 1924 an inclined shaft was sunk to 225 feet and drifts were driven 240 feet on the 100-foot level.In 1929, due to the discovery and development of the Horne mine at Noranda, interest was revived in the property. Sulphide deposits of the disseminated and vein types were explored on the Powell claims. On the B copper 'showing', a vertical shaft, now known as the 'old copper shaft', was sunk to ·a depth of 167 feet and 300 feet of lateral work was carried out on the 150-foot level. As no orebody was discovered this work was discontinued.In 1933 the present company, Powell Rouyn Gold Mines, Limited, was formed and the gold-bearing quartz veins were again tested by drilling and trenching. In 1936, the price of gold having risen to $35 an ounce, operations were resumed. Since then the inclined shaft (No. 1) has been deepened to 500 feet, a second shaft (No. 2, vertical) on the main quartz vein has been sunk to 2,630 feet, and ll; shallow vertical shaft (No. 3) on the same vein but in the south claim has been sunk to 500 feet.Lateral work now approximates 9 miles, and to November 15th, 1946, 1,685,674 tons of ore, which averaged 0.129 oz. gold per ton and 73.6 per cent. Foreword: It is not my purpose, in this address, to write the history of the Geological Survey of Canada, which has from time to time been reviewed by the officers of the Survey itself, and by men more competent than myself to handle so large a subject, but rather to set out some of the reasons for the regard in which the Survey is held by our Institute, the body best qualified to speak for the mining men of Canada. And, a further purpose is to publish the desire of our Institute that the work of the Survey shall be maintained at the highest pitch of efficiency the resources of our country. will permit, because to scrimp expenses on the Survey is 'to save at the spigot and lose at the bunghole." A historical examination of the grounds on which it may be asserted the Geological Survey has been, and still is, of fundamental economic value to our country, discloses a prescience on the part of the forefathers of Canada, calling for our admiring gratitude, and reveals a unanimity among the real leaders of Canadian thought, on the value of geological knowledge, that is impressive in its continuance dawn to this date. There seems always to have been before our people the realisation that large stretches of Canada are unfitted for agricultural settlement, and that our glaciated areas, the barrens and tundra of the North, and our extensive mountain ranges, had promise of compensating mineral content which the geologist and the prospector, labouring together through the years, would disclose. The Geological Survey is one of Canada's oldest public services, distinguished by an unimpaired tradition of honourable and useful labour. Founded in 1843, under William Edmond Logan, not yet 'Sir William', one year after the Act of Union, it was directed by him until 1869, or into the early years of Confederation, so that the early years .of the Survey were also, politically, the formative years of Canada, as we know her today.

"The tyndalloscope is used in Europe for dust-hazard assessments in both coal and metal mines. Dust-hazard conditions can be directly evaluated by the tyndalloscope in many underground working situations, once the basic standard table or tables have been prepared from representative mine-rock samples.The tyndalloscope is excellent, in many cases, for diagnostic dust sampling during a working shift, because individual readings can be taken to within three-minute intervals. The limitations of the tyndalloscope are also discussed.The author suggests that a combination of both the tyndalloscope and gravimetric sampling methods would be an ideal match for most mine dust-hazard assessments."

AREAS in which the surface de-posits consist of organic material -known in some parts of Canada as muskeg and in Europe, more generally, as peat lands -have long been some of the least rewarding of lands of the north temperature zone. Even in such countries as Great Britain, Holland, and Denmark where a good deal of incentive exists to develop all available land, the use of peat land has been negligible except as a source of fuel. Only recently have efforts shown promise in re-claiming these lands for farming or for forestry. Russia has large areas of peat and use is made of it for power generation. The Russian people have also ?developed a variety of machines for handling peat, which would indicate that they are well ahead of the Wes tern World in their technical and physical ability to solve some of the problems. Certainly in Canada, where there are over 500,000 square miles of muskeg, the economic aspects of this problem are important. This is especially true in considering the shifting emphasis to northern development. Not only is muskeg in possession of great stretches of terrain, thereby rendering it useless for agricultural purposes, but it is apparently moving into forested areas and reducing their productivity. In addition, it lies as a great barrier to movement in the search for and development of such natural resources as petroleum, natural gas and minerals generally. This situation has long been recognized in Canada but only recently have organized efforts been made to study the problems and search out ways of overcoming them.

THE most useful guide to the role of lime in flotation is the view that the chemistry of any flotation operation is primarily a pattern in relative solubilities. We have the coming together of a number of minerals, reagents, fortuitous salts, water, and oxygen, many of which have not been previously in contact with each other, and every one of which is free, at least to some extent, to abandon old alliances and to form new ones. Of one thing the operator may be sure, and that is that, when equilibrium has been reached, those new chemical combinations will have formed which are the least soluble combinations possible to the environment. The laws of solution govern the operation, which means that relative concentrations are always a factor, and temperature frequently is. What the operator is really doing when he chooses his reagents .in the first place (empirically or otherwise) and works out their? optimum amounts, is to provide an environment in which (1) the least soluble possible compound of the mineral he desires to float is one which is also non-wettable, while at the same time (2) the least soluble compounds possible to the minerals he desires to depress are wettable. Since all metathesis is reversible, perfection is impossible to achieve, and the operator is constantly striving to establish that combination of concentrations which will drive each and every particular reaction as far as possible in the direction he desires it to go, in accordance with the law of molar concentration.

"The hematite surface plays a vital role in several processes of industrial and technological importance, such as, in beneficiation of iron ores, catalysis, and geochemical processes. Therefore, it is imperative to have a clear description of the structure and composition of this surface, which forms the underlying basis for such a wide variety of complex phenomena. Particularly, from the perspective of beneficiation of Indian alumina-rich iron ore slimes and fines, a clear understanding of the surface structure and composition of hematite surface and its difference from the alumina surface will facilitate identification and/or design of selective reagents which can be used to separate the two minerals. In this work, the hydroxylated hematite (0001) surface was modeled using density functional theory (DFT). The computed planar relaxations are consistent with X-Ray crystal truncation rod diffraction results reported in the literature. It is demonstrated that only one type of surface, that is, the (OH)3-Fe-H3O3-R is stable under aqueous conditions, as the relaxations for the second type of termination: (OH)3-Fe-Fe-R do not match quantitatively with experiments suggesting that its coexistence with the (OH)3-Fe-H3O3-R surface is unlikely. A detailed analysis of this surface shows that two of the three (OH) groups are not connected to the Fe surface atom. Instead, they form H2O molecules by combining with the H-atoms on the O-layer beneath the Fe-terminated surface leaving the Fe surface-atom bonded to only one OH-group. This undercoordination of Fe-atoms on the surface explains its higher reactivity as compared to hydroxylated alumina.INTRODUCTIONThe hematite surface plays a vital role in several processes of industrial and technological importance. Therefore, it is imperative to have a clear description of the structure and composition of the hematite surface, which form the underlying basis for such a wide variety of complex phenomena. Particularly, from the perspective of beneficiation of Indian alumina-rich iron ore slimes and fines, this is an important problem, as a clear understanding of the surface structure and composition of hematite surface and its difference from the alumina surface will facilitate identification and/or design of selective reagents which can be used to separate the two minerals. Our current research focus is at employing molecular modeling techniques to come up with such selective reagents and then test their efficacy in the practical scenario through selective dispersion – flocculation labscale experiments and subsequently plant trials. Obviously, the correct structure and composition of the hydroxylated hematite surface is a fundamental prerequisite for such investigations."

"The property of Matachewan Consolidated Mines is in the Matachewan area on the west side of Montreal river. It lies in the western extension of the Kirkland Lake sedimentary belt. The first discovery of gold on the property was made by S. Otisse, in 1916. The property was taken over by Ventures, Limited, in 1933 and production commenced in late 1934. To date (December 31st, 1947) it has amounted to 2,308,800 tons, from which gold and silver to the value of $9,567,600 has been recovered. The mill is currently treating 650 tons of ore a day.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe deposits lie close to the south contact of a belt of sediments striking in a general east-west direction. The sediments, presumed to be of Timiskaming age, consist of light buff arkose and greywacke, containing small pebbles. The Keewatin volcanic rocks to the south are andesites or basalts with cuff and agglomerate bands developed especially near the contact with the sediments. The lavas and sediments are overlain by relatively flat-lying sediments of the Cobalt series to the south and west of the mine, but these later sediments are not involved in the mineralization under discussion. The Keewatin lavas and Timiskaming sediments are intruded by dykes and lenses of red syenite porphyry that have approximately the same strike and dip as the invaded rocks. Later diabase dykes, apparently post-ore, run in a north-south direction and cut all rocks except the Cobalt series.OREBODIESThe gold-bearing mineralization forms bodies of two different types: (1) Within the volcanic rocks irregular orebodies with limited vertical extent. These consist of a series of flat-dipping quartz stringers and adjacent lavas and /or cuffs fractured, bleached, and mineralized with pyrite and gold. They are higher grade than the second type (average about 0.16 oz. gold a ton) and formed the main source of ore for the first 5 years of production. They are described in more detail than can be given here in an article by C. H. Hopper (4). More recent work on deeper levels has failed so far to find orebodies of comparable grade, though low-grade mineralization of a similar type does occur on the projected rake of the main group of the 'basalt type' of orebodies."

"The Malartic Gold Fields mine is a good example of the association of ore deposits with a major fault zone. It also exemplifies the control exerted by the physical and chemical character of the host rocks on the localization of orebodies.The mine is in Fourniere and Dubuisson townships, Abitibi county. It is 6 miles east of the town of Malartic, 9n the main highway and railway from Noranda to Val d'Or.The discovery of the mine is due largely to the enterprise of the late J. P. Norrie, who organized the present Company in 1935. The ground is entirely covered by overburden, but Mr. Norrie believed that the extension of the Cadillac-Malartic 'break', the principal ore-bearing structure of the district, would be found on this group of claims. This belief was supported by the discovery of gold-bearing float in the area, and was confirmed by a dip-needle survey and a few pilot diamond drill holes that showed that the favourable Malartic greenstone band passes through the centre of the property.In this way the most favourable area for prospecting was narrowed to a zone 2 ½ miles long by ½ mile wide underlain' by greenstone. The remainder of the property is underlain by sedimentary rocks, which, from experience elsewhere in the camp, were not considered as promising. However, as the entire surface is covered by deep overburden, the location of orebodies even within this more or less restricted area could be accomplished only by a long campaign of diamond drilling. Systematic diamond drilling began in 1936.The contacts of the greenstone band were considered to be the most promising places to begin the work, and the early drilling was concentrated on the south contact, because the orebody of the East Malartic mine, 4 miles to the west, had been discovered on this structure and it was reasonable to hope for a repetition of these conditions. Although the south contact was very thoroughly explored, with a certain amount of encouragement, the work did not prove the existence of deposits of ore grade, and attention was shifted to the north contact zone of the greenstone band. In this locality much more promising results were obtained, and a number of good orebodies were outlined."
